Let's talk about the movies which had an emotional impact on your life..
1) Karnan - purely for the Characteristics of Karna such as bravery, charisma, generosity , Loyalty and friendship and the awesome , mind blowing performance by none other than the greatest actor that India had ever produced Dr. Shivaji Ganeshan :notworthy:
2) 6 il irunthu 60 varai - Excellent, realistic story, with stunning, yet natural performance by the Indian Film Industry's super* :notworthy:
3) Thalapathy - similar to Karna's character, beautifully executed by SS and Mamooty
4) Sirpikuzh muthu - the 'great' kamal's master piece :notworthy:
5) Salangai Oli - again another world class show by veteran actor Kamalhassan , awesome songs by Dr.IR and the greatest singer that India had ever produced Dr.SPB :notworthy:
6) Nayagan - wow is the word for Kamalhassan's talents, no word to describe it

Hey! Ram - One of Kamal's Acers! Excellent Sets, Beautiful Screenplay, thought proving dialogues and symbols.
Kuruthi Punal
Nayagan
Aalavanthaan (I know most ppl hate this movie, but it's one of my favs)
Pithamagan
Virumaandi - The presentation of the title song is just Mythical!! 8-) The movie is a masterpiece in so m any ways as far as Tamil Cinema....actually Indian Cinema is concerned. It really brought the 'Mann Vaasanai' to the Theaters in some scenes. :)
will add more later...

I know, these movies did have an impact on My Life with varying importance. :P
The Theme of Hey! Ram was something I was very passionate about at one point. The movie had a huge impact on my mind.
Kuruthi Punal was just some hard hitting shit, I saw it when I was in 5th on VHS. The Movie was just
Nayagan and Pithamagan are kind of self xplanatory.
Virumaandi really sparked an interest for me in South Indian Culture, Dravidian Origin etc.
So yeah....:P

Uravai Kaaththa Kili - Made the most emotional impact on me. I cried so much for my mistake after watching the movie. I took a solomon oath on that day that I will never watch TR movie again.
The same kind of impact I had for Ramarajan's movie " Ooru vittu ooru vandhu"
These movies left indelible marks in my movie seeing career.

Nammavar- the scene in which Nagesh was seen dancing alone after his daughter's death had an emotional impact on me.
A very close friend of mine died in a tragic road accident a few years ago. His parents, especially his father was totally inconsolable throughout the funeral. A few days after the funeral, I decided to pay them a visit. The moment my friend'a father saw me, he said, "Vaa pa, enna rombe naala kaanum? Vicky (his son who passed away) room-le than irukan," And he proceeded to chat away, all the while having the impression that his son is still alive.
The scene with Nagesh in Nammavar often remind me of the way my friend's father was during those period.

Adaptation
I suppose I do have one unembarrassed passion. I want to know what it feels like to care about something passionately.
You and I share the same DNA. Is there anything more lonely than that?
I'd be the screenwriter who speaks Chinese and plays the oboe
Yeah but it's easier for plants. I mean they have no memory. They just move on to whatever's next. With a person though, adapting almost shameful. It's like running away.
By simply doing what they're designed to do, something large and magnificent happens.
Caring passionately about something, whittles the world down to a more manageable size.
Nothing happens in the real world ? Are you out of your %$&^%^ mind ?
...one like an onion, one looks like an octopus. One looks...... like a school teacher, one looks like a country beauty queen, one looks like a intellectual with whom you'd do the Sunday Times crossword puzzle in bed. One has eyes that dance. One has eyes that contain the sadness of the world.
I want to be new. I WANT TO BE NEW
Done with fish.

In Malaysia we have many Indian citizens (Tamils) who are employed in similar circumstances - Barbers, Car-wash assistants, Restaurant helpers, etc
Every one of them I have spoken to, have mentioned being over-worked and irregularly/insufficiently paid. I don't imagine thier plight to be any different from what was shown in Angaadi Theru.

Tamil, Anbe Sivam...taught me a few lessons about life in general...! Mahaanadhi, have been ran over by a couple of such 'friends' in life (tho not as damagingly as in the film!) but whenever i watch the late haneefa's n kamalji portions, it takes me back to those unpleasant memories...disturbing!
Malayalam, Tanmatra and Kaazhcha (2 Blessy films)...the former is very close to my life experience and the latter reaffirmed the lessons Anbe Sivam taught me! no matter how many repeat viewings i have (n i've had atleast 4 viewings of each), I fight to hold back tears each time!
Hindi, Satya by RGV...it hit me, like they say, like a bolt from the blue...there i was, sitting in the theater waiting for the movie to start, oh yeah directed by rgv of rangeela n daud and based on the mumbai underworld (yeah i've seen many!), and i was jolted well and truly! took me many days and multiple viewings of the same for the it to sink in...hadn't seen anything like that in Bolly cinema till then! remains my fav hindi film to date and Bhiku Maatre one of the top 5 perfos for me by any Indian actor of my generation! Years later, i watched black friday and woke up to 'anurag kashyap'...the signs were there!
English, Shawshank Redemption plainly for the fact that it provides me a lift whenever am in need of one...!

those scenes when his daughter runs away and marries Karthik made me :( , followed by th song Chittuku chella chituku made it even worse :(
6 il irunthu 60 vathu varai - simply was too emotional throughout the film, scnes like when SS's girlfriend dumps him saying he has no money :cry2: :curse:  and all the insult he gets from his Sister was just simply too much for me.. :curse: :angry2: :cry2:

[tscii:c17e576e54]Anjali was a definite heart-breaker for me. The scene where Raghuvaran tells Anu about Anjali being God’s special child and that they should look after her really well… And the scene where Anjali calls Revathy “Amma” for the first time…:cry2:
Til' date, I still can't watch this film with my family or when there's people around.
Salangai Oli- watched it recently on tv. The climax scene where Kamal was brought to the stage in the wheel chair and the audience clapping on seeing him. For someone who sacrificed everything for art but never got his due, it was totally overwhelming to finally see him getting the applause he rightly deserved. The way he signals the audience to continue the clapping with tears streaming down his cheeks…the whole scene was just too heartrending.
Abhiyum Naanum-I didn’t enjoy the film as a whole but there were a few scenes esp those involving Kumaravelu (Ravi Shashtri) which touched me a lot. The scene in the restaurant where Kumaravelu tells Prakashraj, “First time sar,” depicting that that was the first time he has ever been to a restaurant. And the way he looks at the young Abhi and tells Prakashraj “yengga amma sar,”… Man, that guy truly stole the scene there!

Actually i need to thank Groucho for introducing Gouravam to me. It was his review about the film that prompted me to watch this film in the first place! In fact, Gouravam was the first 60's (or was it 70's?) film which I sat and watched til the end :D Enjoyed every minute of it. Been watching more 60's films after that, but that's a different story...
Coming back to Gouravam, more than the climax, it was the scene where Kannan leaves the house that had me choked up. The elder Sivaji comes out of his room and asks his wife where Kannan was.."poitane avven?"
And the scene where Kannan comes back to take his uncle's robe... :notworthy: well, you just got to watch the film to feel it.

There are some movies where certain scenes had an emotional impact - but the movie overall didn't make an impact due to other reasons.
for example:
veyil - loved the tea kadai scene ... "naan un annada"
7g rainbow colony - loved the scene where hero apologises to the heroine in the bus stop
... more later

... and there are some movies where director tries to inject emotion by deliberately introducing struggling characters..
the trend was started in KB films.. For example here is an extract from Wikipedia for Aval Oru Thodarkathai
She works hard to support her widowed sister, unmarried sister, her blind younger brother, her mother, her drunkard brother and his family
I wonder why KB didn't add AIDS affected father, handicapped husband, and cat that has cancer to the mix.

The Catch of Unnaipol Oruvan was that it was completly a normal guy, unlike other Vigilante movies like Anniyan, Indian, and all the other "an"'s. He didn't have superpowers, he wasn't a robot, he wasn't a Police Officer, He wasn't a Super Skilled Retired War Veteran. He was just a normal dude, just another face in the crowd. So Normal that almost no importance was given to his identity, he's just a vague charecter, but he is there, hiding in the masses. :P That was a huge plus point for the film IMHO. 8-)

I havn't seen Shutter Island. But from what I have heard, it has a similar story to "Identity" (John Cussack movie). Is it true?
Martin Scorsese and Tim Burton are two directors I hate - hence I was avoiding this movie till now. I will go ahead and watch if someone convinces me :)

This isn't the typical MS movie at all. I was actually shocked when I read that MS was going to make a movie out of The Book. It's not really his area, but he did very well! Check out the post in the Indian Films section that i made abt the movie just now. Maybe that'l convince u. :) My advice: Watch It!!
I've seen identity, the storylines are completly different. Both movies deal with the Criminally Insane in their Plots, but Shutter Island is way different from Identity.
I LOVED Identity when I saw it back when I was 15, i thought it was just mindblowing. I saw it again a few months ago, didn't find it to be all that great as I remember. I guess I must've grown out :P

It's truely emotional movie, for many (Including me). If it's not appealing to someone, that doesn't mean what others are saying is exaggeration. We are discussing just about the movies which made emotional impact and why, not about which one is worth the hype, which is not etc.

Lots of ppl seem to have had similar expierences, that's why the movie is so sucessful!
I've heard from many that the line :: "Ethavathu Kovam Vandhuchunna, appadiya nadandhu poiduva. Ave moonja vida mudhuga thaane naan jaasthi paarthean" :: Brought back several memories.

Thulabaram. I saw it without knowing what it was about, the turns it took were unexpected and very moving.
Harischandra, especially Sivaji's speech near the end where he asks the gods what kind of vicious freaks they are. An underrated movie, imo.
Karagattakaran too, though the feeling is harder to describe.

My point is ..If you feel it is manipulative ,you shouldn't get emotional . IMO ,we all have pre-notions based on director, actor ,period of the movie etc .. I know that most people have pre-notion for Beemsingh movies as they should be manipulative ..keeping that in mind not to get emotional while watching ,still they get emotional :)

Got it. I think Kamal stunned everyone in tamilnadu in that movie. Before that people never thought he could be such a great actor. Even kamal mentioned it in one interview. Kamal's acting as a handicap man was awsome, :notworthy: he is tailor made for such roles :notworthy:
It is a dubbed movie, original is "Swathi Muthyam" (Telugu). KH was "total vaaipillaami" in that movie! :notworthy: For some reason, KH didn't dub his own voice in Thamizh. It was a bit awkward to hear SPB's voice for a Kamal role.

Kamal wanted to release this movie in Tamilnadu as is(Telugu version). K vishwanath did not agree for this and that was the reason for the problem. They did not make movie together for long time. They again got together in kuruthippunal I believe.

Actually, KH acted under K. Viswanath's "Subha Sankalpam" which was released sometime soon after Sathi Leelavathy. Kurudhipunal released 3-4 months after "Subha Sankalpam".
On a digressive note, '95 was really a comeback year for Kamal @ box office. All his 3 movies released that year were superhits completing a hatrick. It was so welcome after he had a dismal '93 and '94 at BO.

HR,
Yes "Paasa valai" is the dubbed one. SPB again.
Venki,
AFAIK, the movie was a hit in Telugu Desam. But yes "Pasasa Valai" was a flop in TN like most of the dubbed movies do.

Mano is a poor singer. Params might have his bias and reasons but Mano spoiled quite a few IR songs enbadhu marukka mudiyAdha uNmai. Not all his fault as Raja shouldnt have given him those songs - notably, Geethanjali, nI oru kaadhal sangitham etc

Going through all albums of ARR (for ASSJ purpose). Came across some great numbers of Mano ;
kaNNum kaNNum koLLai adithaal
aayirathil naan oruvan (vaaipillaamai'ku oru example)
puththam puthu boomi vEndum
aathankara maramE
oh oh kikku yERuthE
thillaana thillaana
thendralE thendralE
Mano has rendered only a few songs for ARR - but every song has got a different style and he has done complete justice.
