It is time to have a thread for last year's finalists, who look good enough to repeat that feat, although they might find it difficult to put it past Deccan this year, too, in the finals.

an achievement indeed for a team labelled as test specialists n the irony is the very players who were called "test specialists" turning out to be the matchwinners many a time for the team! talks a lot about the mental strength of the unit, not a surprising quality when u see that kumble, dravid, kallis form the core group of the team who epitomized the underlined word throughout their playing careers! no doubt, kicking out of saaru sarma too wud've helped!
notable mensons: ross taylor, robin uthappa, manish pandey, praveen kumar.
definitely amongst my favotite teams of ipl.
1. MI - coz GOD plays for MI!
2. CSK - MSD, MSD, n MSD! am getting fond of M Vijay too this season!
3. BRC - Dravid, Kumble, Kallis n one of my favorite cities in India (nostalgia)!

jinju, indeed. It is sad that Rahul Dravid, who was criticised and laughed at in 2008 for selecting the squad he did, isnt given the credit today - for it is his picks who are propelling RCB, barring an odd Uthappa, who was Mallya's personal pick in the second year.

Bangalore have an intimidating Batting line-up. Compare with Mumbai who look formidable - but only when Sachin fires. Take Sachin's wicket and the batsman perform KathakaLi. Mumbai's strengths hang on too thin a thread. Bangalore are 80-20 favourites, if not 90-10, the 10% chance only being Sachin's prowess

CF, I am kind of mixed on this team. It is like:
Hey look at that Mallya, how can I like this team?
You see Dravid and Kumble, and feel, well, how can I not like this team
Then you see Kohli, and go "heck, I cant support a team with Kohli"
Pandey comes into view then, and softens you up.
Then it is Karnataka and the alleged, and fairly well understood, ill treatment of tamils(kalyasi had first hand experience this year in the match) - you rebel against support
But it is a southern team so support against north indies.
So, I am never sure where I am w.r.t RCB however what I am sure of is they are an awesome team and squad, more so than Mumbai Indians, and the only way MI can beat them is by "Mere pAs Sachin Tendulkar hai". But that is too much burden on one man so I expect RCB to nail this one

Enmity between Karnataka and TN is well known.Don't know what happened to kalyasi but when I was in Chennai for 5 years, have faced abusive comments, cold stares, sarcastic potshots quite a few times.
Had the maturity to understand that this was the work of a few lumpen elements and ignored it.Would not have come to this hub if I had taken it to heart.
Isn't it a fact that Bangalore is the most cosmopolitan city where kannada speaking people are actually in a minority. It's the only city where you can get by without learning a word of kannada and not have any problems.
Mallya-liquor baron, isn't a legal business??what diff does the team owner make. That way, is Mukesh and his way of conducting business clean. Is that being held against the MI's.
Kohli-what about him?????????????

Hatred is irrational, but not my silly aversion towards RCB. My best friends support RCB, and I enjoy taking potshots at 'em. No politics involved etc. Perhaps a slight bit of "siege mentality" that we developed to North Indies, as a result of being targeted and prejudiced. In general terms, it's taking the mickey out of 'em.

Feeyaar, clearly, I am not very comfortable with the notion of supporting clubs - which manifests easily in football - but here in IPL, a few inherent factors have kicked in. I am glad because I am able to hook on to a few theories now first-hand, unlike with football where I unsuccesfully attempted to get feedback from patrons in this forum some time back. The stated confusion is reflected in a post in the other thread.
Some random observations:
1. Despite your constant cautioning about the inequivalence of CSK and TN, and despite the aversion I have for the said club owners(assuming I buy into the club concept), my liking for CSK primarily stems from the inherent passion for my region(TN). And Joe supporting CSK sort of reinforces that, in my view. Whatever you protest, I can come round to understand why you can associate a club with your regional pride, although how it will pan out if one more club represented Chennai is an experiment waiting to be performed. Maybe, South Chennai Cosmopolitans vs Perambur Sons-of-Soil will have its own politics underneath)
2. Player loyalty primarily seems to be fuelling club loyalty as of now. If Sachin moves to Pune, I see a large population moving away from support for MI, even in Mumbai. Speaking for myself, I hate franchises captained by players I hate and containing more of them, and vice versa. That I am still undecided on CSK vs MI is an indicator of this.
3. Atleast part of my hate for Rajasthan and Punjab is racially motivated . I can feel that in my veins.
4. Augmenting 2 & 3, that I dont hate Punjab as much as #3 implies is a function of #2.

I get what you say. You answered out of turn though :lol2: neenga uLLa irundhukittE veLiyilErndhu pArkkuravar :-)
I remember the annoucement of IPL1.When they said KKD is going to play for Delhi and someone with the first name Manvinder is going to play for Chennai I was baffled. Then I realized that this was some - regionalism defeating bhai-bhai ploy of the capitalist Indian state.
And btw don't yield to self-labeling this as racism and xenophobia. It's not necessarily that. You don't at all feel troubled by Kripal Singh or Badani, do you ? Heck, for ages the mainstay of the TN team was Trinidadian !
There are certain behavioral traits that we are bound to dislike that seem disproportionately present in members of certain regions/nationalities: eg. Aussies are sledgers who think the spirit of the game is the post-match pint.
So it is not the foreign-ness itself that bothers as much as the 'unnecessary' imports within India. Rayapuram aaLai wanted-A kootti vandhu VisAlAtchi thOttathula viLayAda solradhu dhaan konjam pablo nerudal.

It's definitely proportional to the experience and knowledge of the club (and not just the "game") that contributes to this love/passion, that there is no looking back. It has become a part of your life (the matchdays a procession more-like). It might have been less when it first started, but it's definitely grown to a stage where one is possessed. The history of watching the club, and growing in love to it, so to speak. And of course, the hate you develop towards opposition ( this is far more intense in football, because it's a contact sport - lot of diving, cheating, conniving referees, unfair advantage due to decisions, and a lot more drama/passion in the game) It's sort of life itself. Love and hate in human experience. Less of a social construct, but more of experiences of going through highs and lows of the team. Less "natural"/"inherent" than it would seem in racial/regional/geographical factors. But I've grown so much to be an Arsenal supporter (and not just a "fan"), I can't see myself supporting any other club. OTOH, I'd find it relatively easy to switch/support other IPL teams to CSK.
In short, It's not impossible to mute "anything", only the level differs.

Fair enough.
It's just that I don't hate anybody for reasons like "moonji pudikala" :D
Of course there are strong likes and dislikes and sometimes everything cannot be explained.maybe moonji pudikkala is an assumption and there is something else.AFAIAC,
1)I still don't know why I want Chelsea to win when till date I have never ever watched a single match of EPL and have no idea which 11 is playing on the field.
2)Saw 1 interview of R.Ashwin(when he took those 3 wickets against KKR)and immediately felt a dislike for him.
3)Was very impressed by M.Vijay as a player but his reactions in IPL 3 everytime he has taken a catch or scored a boundary or six makes my blood boil.
4)Feel Hayden was right when he called harbhajan a weed and the hate I felt towards him then has vanished now
and so on and so forth........

As regards Ashwin, I sort of liked him AFTER his interview
1. The Set Max Parminder started off with addressing him as S.Ashwin, and Ashwin cut through very rudely, "The name's R.Ashwin". That led to a typical, voluble nonsense from K Srikkanth (http://forumhub.mayyam.com/hub/viewtopic.php?p=2093315#2093315)
2. The assesment as to "I deserved to be dropped"
3. I think he came across as very down-to-earth and at the same time I could sense a cool aversion to politeness, a deadly combination I think.

Plum,
If you are genuinely feeling sorry, don't ,it's ok.RCB lost momemtum the day they tinkered with the team to accomodate Kevin,Ross and White.
I myself had no expectations or hope that they will win considering that they scraped through to the S/F on NRR and on the back of just 3 wins in 9 games.
19th May,
IMO,Dravid opening was not the problem but the reason mentioned above-no momemtum, basically struggling.
Today's match is difficult to predict:50-50 chances for both teams.

Kumble bowling no-ball and giving so many runs in last over.
All the bowlers were expensive. You can't win cups with Vinay kumar and Praveen kumar. They give runs. Even Steyn turned out to be expensive. When KP is the most economical bowler, you know how bad it is..
Kallis, on the way down after his initial surge of form.
Ross Taylor hasn't fired at all. Uthappa could be hit or miss, it's a high risk game.
Manish pandey was underwhelming this year .

The most surprising thing for me was Steyn.. I never expected Steyn to bowl such full length and full tosses (ofcourse he was trying yorker all such times).. but irundhaalum 4 overs 43 runs - too much from a top class bowler.. SA WC team will be worried about this performance ..

idhula ennanga surprising. while it can b argued that having an out n out pace bowler is good in any form of the game, the risk u take is higher in t20 by having one such and one shud be braced for occasional failures from such bowlers in this format.
that it happened for steyn in the crucial match was RCB's bad luck! more examples r brett lee, shaun tait, shane bond, etc. thats where lasith malinga stands out, he uses his variations cleverly in this format than he does in ODIs. now that i've told this, i hope he doesnt come undone in a crucial game!

exactly.. Mike Procter was fighting with himself about the number of times Malinga has bowled the batsmen out of his 33 wickets in all of IPL.. 17.. 18.. 17 .. 18..
I'm a great fan of Steyn's bowling and his attitude towards bowling.. adhaan indha soga kadhai.. For me, he is next to Alan Donald in the SA cricket.. Waiting for the SA series in West Indies. Hopefully no more dead pitches there..
But comparing Malinga and Steyn.. Malinga is a top notch ODI and T20 bowler but Steyn is an out and out test bowler .. ITV4 comes for free here and I had a glimpse of Malinga's bowling at the office with a white man.. He was like "thats not even a proper bowling action".. Thats debatable...
kid-glove
22nd April 2010, 06:03 PM
Yeah, for some reason or other, Malinga's talent is prolific but still way too unorthodox and difficult to accept in some quarters.
For example, I'd never consider him a better bowler than Waqar even if he breaks the latter's record. But when I think about it, it's near impossible to be this accurate with yorkers with that bowling action.
Plum
22nd April 2010, 06:05 PM
Yeah, the debate over bowling action almost invariably misses the advantage factor. How exactly is the action helping him bowl better than if the action was otherwise. Except in the case of bowling faster, I have never understood how throwing can enhance your bowling. Ironically, the faster bowlers called for chucking were never hounder as much as the spinner(s).

Yes.. being unorthodox.. I still remember the ODI between India and L in Australia, where Malinga was bowling to Bhajji and Bhajji asked the umpirie to remove his white hat, as he couldnt see the ball due to the fact the ball and his hat were white in color.. So you could see where his release of ball is coming from.. Ravi Shastri was having a gala of a time in his commentary box after seeing the umpire's bald head .. not sure who the umpire was though.

Bowling action does make huge difference when it comes to variation in bowling.. For eg. Courtney Walsh, Venkatesh Prasad had almost the same kind of "delivering the ball" action where their arms brushes the ear .. this was easier for them to always try with the leg cutter and the slower balls.. Still remember that wonderful moment during WI series of England.. Graham Thorpe came into the crease, Walsh was bowling a slow leg cuttering yorker.. Thorpe was plum in front and he couldnt believe his face..
Srinath tried the same with his bowling action but failed terribly as he couldnt get his leg cutter right with his bowling action..
Azhar Mahmood, on the other hand, has a off spinner kind of action, where before delivering the ball, the arm is off some distance from his ears.. He was very good at his off cutters.
But Malinga's action is quite tricky.. even a fielder who throws the ball at the keeper, will use the side arm to have the throw accurate with good velocity. adhae matter thaan ivankitaiyum.. to generate pace, he uses the side arm bowling to generate more pace but at the same time, he is very good with his off cutters.. mind you he never uses leg cutters, which will be next to impossible with his bowling action.
The thing we need to appreciate Malinga is that how come he delivers the bouncers, yorkers, good length balls with his slower deliveries.. That will always be a wonder and gives us more exciting hope that we might have many entertaining bowlers especially from Sri Lanka to keep us busy..
