Aah kg :). I assume you started watching cricket with keen interest from IPL-08 and very less of Test cricket. These three (Sach, Bhajji and Symo) have an unpleasant incident in their and lives thanks to destiny Sachin had to be in the middle of that.

Mumbai, BKC, March 27: Rohit Sharma is a limited overs specialist. His incredible feats in the field, both with the bat and the ball, earned him the under-23 Player of the Tournament award in Season-2 of the IPL.

Having tasted success with the Deccan Chargers, Sharma is now back to where he belongs - Mumbai. MumbaiIndians.com caught up with him for an exclusive chat on the eve of the IPL Season-4. Here are a few excerpts from the interview:

How excited are you on coming back to your city Mumbai and representing MI…
I am indeed very happy to be back to Mumbai and playing for the Mumbai Indians. This was the only thing missing from my cricketing portfolio, being a true Mumbaikar. Finally, I will get a chance to play for my city and I am very much looking forward to it.

You had a great time with both the bat and the ball in the previous seasons. How are you planning to sustain the same level of intensity?
All three years have been very good for me. I really had a great time with Deccan chargers. But things keep changing; I am now a part of the Mumbai Indians set-up, the atmosphere will be different. But I want to keep getting better with both the bat and the ball and contribute regularly.

Since coming into the Mumbai Indians scheme of things, how are you preparing yourself for the tournament?
I am very determined, very much eager to perform. Leading into the tournament, you need to be doing what you need to do. We talk about preparing well for the tournament. I am not wasting any time and I am straightaway getting into the thick of the action. We have got good coaches, fantastic facilities. So, we have to make sure we make full use of that.

How do you see yourself going with the willow? And is there any particular position you are comfortable batting at?
I am keen on scoring consistently for the team. Wherever I go, my job is to get runs and see my team through. I have batted in almost all the positions in my career so far, so I am comfortable batting anywhere in the order. Probably, as the tournament progresses, we will know where I would be batting. But I do not think I will be batting at any fixed slot, as the format demands innovation. I think everybody in the team should be flexible. One has to remember that it is a team game and be prepared for that. Ultimately, it depends on the coach and the captain.

You have been criticized for not finishing the matches. Does that haunt you in anyway? Can you express your views on the same?
I have won close games for my previous teams and on some occasions I have also been unable to see the side through. It was disappointing, but it does not haunt me. Sometimes it does enter the mind, but one cannot afford to get disturbed with that. You need to carry on; these things will keep coming up. All you need to do is look back at your mistakes, and then analyze and rectify them. So that the next time you get into a similar situation you are able to handle it better.

Your impression on the MI squad…
Our team looks very formidable; there is no doubt about it. Having a nice blend of youth and experience in the squad will help our cause. There are some explosive hitters and at the same time there are batsmen who can hold the innings together. Our bowling has very good depth. It is a well balanced unit and everybody is charged up. The key will be to prepare ourselves well before we enter the tournament.

Mumbai, Wankhede Stadium, April 7: The Mumbai Indians played their last practice match before they left for Delhi to play their first game in the IPL…

It was a full Twenty20 match between sides captained by Rohit Sharma and Ambati Rayudu at the Wankhede Stadium on April 7. Batting first, Rayudu XI got off to a cautious but solid start, thanks to their opening pair of Sarul Kanwar and Davey Jacobs who put up a 47-run stand before Kanwar departed for 23 off 18. Soon, Jacobs was also sent back to the hut for 19 off 20 by Ali Murtuza who managed to sneak through his defenses.

Skipper Rayudu and Kiwi all-rounder James Franklin then steadied the innings. Both stuck to their task and added 58 runs for the 3rd wicket partnership with some intelligent batting. Rayudu soon departed for a well made 35 off 28. Franklin and S K Yadav thereafter built fresh momentum to get to a competitive total of 180 in their allotted 20 overs. Towards the end, Yadav played a hurricane knock to score 35 off 19, while Franklin remained not out on 37 off 27.

At the innings break, Mumbai Indians captain Sachin Tendulkar, who was cheering the boys from the dressing room, came down to address the media who were anxiously waiting to hear from the master on Team India’s recent World Cup triumph. After a brief question-answer session, the match resumed again.

Skipper Sharma took the onus on himself to lead the chase along with Aiden Blizzard. A misunderstanding between the two openers led to Blizzard getting run-out for no score. Wicket-keeper Aditya Tare then joined Sharma to steady the innings. The innings slowly gained momentum, as both Sharma and Tare maneuvered the ball into the gaps. Their 72-run partnership came to an end after Sharma was dismissed for 41 off 32.

It was a big moment in the match, as big-man Kieron Pollard strolled to the wicket. An air of expectancy hung over the crowd who were witnessing the match. Pollard watchfully played his first delivery and then went for the second one straight over the bowler’s head for a boundary. It was a shot that seemed to suggest that the match would be over very quickly. However, wickets fell in a heap, as Tare and Pollard were both sent back to the hut for 37 & 25, respectively. The score was 129-4, with 52 more runs needed in 6 overs.

The responsibility to chase down the runs was now on R Satish’s shoulders along with Blizzard (who was allowed to come in for the second time, as per the rules of the practice match). Towards the end, it was their sparking partnership which stole the match in their favor. Satish hammered 26 off 15, while Blizzard blasted 29 in 15 to round up the match.

Malinga continues to grow in stature

Lasith Malinga has carved a niche for himself in world cricket for some time now and he continues to grow in stature by the dint of his extraordinary showing with the ball.

The Sri Lankan bowler, as famous for his locks as his unique slingshot action, swiftly overcame the disappointment of his country's loss to India in the World Cup final a week ago and produced a dazzling performance for Mumbai Indians in the Indian Premier League (IPL) encounter against Delhi Daredevils at the Ferozeshah Kotla here on Sunday.

Malinga, donning the Mumbai Indians' blue that strikingly resemble the Lankan colours, looked like continuing with his fine performance in the World Cup.

His figures of five for 13, the third best in IPL history, spoke volumes about his effectiveness.

Malinga's dominance was spell-binding. Be it his toe-crushing yorkers or sharp low full tosses which beat the batsmen with the pace or the well-concealed slower ones, the 27-year-old executed them with authority.

By ruthlessly castling the first four of his five victims, he not only sniffed life out of the Delhi batting line-up but also left the home team a demoralised lot.

“I always practise my yorkers as it is a wicket-taking ball,” said Malinga.

“I never mind what the wicket is like, I never mind who the batsman is. I think of what I have to do,” said the supremely confident pacer.

Accuracy has been the high point of Malinga's career. It is the sole reason behind Malinga's emergence as a potent weapon in the Twenty20 format over the years.

It also explains another part of his effort which often goes unnoticed — keeping the batsmen quiet (like bowling a maiden to Sehwag on Sunday).

“Viru is a good batsman. But I think I can do that and I try my best. I always try to bowl a good line and length,” he said.

Malinga's formula to handle reputed batsmen is simple. “They have some ability which they can do. I try to do my best,” he said.

Interestingly- Malinga, Pollard and Tendulkar all have history of (coincidentally) not performing in major finals. Remember the Inagural Champions League where Pollard sizzled all through but fizzled out in the Finals? Ofcourse, he did well in IPL finals last year but was not enough to take the team through.
Malinga - WC Final 2011(what about 2007?) - again took two wickets but could not make a break through match winning performance.

I dont remember Symonds making a major match winning performance in Finals either.

As poor as Bhajji is, lot of blame goes to selectors and team management(india and mumbai indians) for letting him hold on to the myth that firing at pads, scoring a few runs when the likes of new zealand bowl at him, and an occasional five-for make him the irrepleacable #1 spinner in the country. The day he is jettisoned with a clear message "you are a strike bowler. No wickets means even 3 centuries and economy rate of 4 cannot keep you in the team", that is when he will improve his bowling.

I think bringing a bowler in place of a batsman might help a little. But the major problem is that the team doesnt have any other wicket taking bowler apart from malinga who is gonna shortly leave for england. So it all depends on the batting to come good in most of the matches. It would help a little if harbhajan finds his wicket taking ways again (though very unlikely). Otherwise it is gonna be a very tough road ahead for the side....Very happy to see sachin get a t20 ton at last.....not his best though....but not his worst either

Dropping him just after 2 bad performances is not justified, IMO. We don't have a proper opener now and stop gap arrangements won't be successful. Also a regular keeper is much better than making someone like Rayudu to keep wickets.

James Franklin is a waste of space. Can't Symonds bowl? Does he have a niggle or something? Why do they need Franklin, that too by compromising with the Keeping position?

Think this is where Dhoni's strategy of "Dont drop until he proves utterly useless" seems a good one. Ok, that's the opposite extreme. This one's a too hasty one.
Also, a promotion for Rohit, Symonds and Pollard is in order to keep them well oiled for the later matches.
Heck, it is just the IPL - Why am I getting involved? :( :oops:

Not sure what Cricbuzz is up to. Malinga has practically retired from tests and Chris Gayle was dropped along with other seniors by their cricket board, but CB blames the players in both cases.

Not sure if you remember, Ray Price dismissed Sachin three out of three times in this test series (http://www.espncricinfo.com/ci/engine/series/60723.html). In fact, Sachin was criticised a bit for getting out to SLA bowlers like Price, Panesar during that season.

SL Malinga on 49 wickets. Hope he takes his 50th tomorrow. He is 6th on the list of highest wicket takers in the IPL. But he has played only 3 seasons and he has taken it in just 32 matches. He averages 16.32 every wicket and his econ is the least at 6.54

Great potential but can be a careless stroke maker.. Sample this, his favorite shot is the sweep.

Levi's batting gets MI fans excited

Richard Levi has done his bit to bring curious Mumbai Indian supporters to the Wankhede Stadium on Friday.

By providing a booming start to the DLF-IPL V and a resounding win for Mumbai Indians in the one-sided skirmish against two-time champion Chennai Super Kings at the MAC Stadium on Wednesday, Levi has given confidence to his team of seeing brighter days ahead in the competition and also luring spectators for MI's eight home matches at the Wankhede Stadium.

MI, last year's finalist, did not waste time in showing off its prized possession and Levi promptly delivered. Levi will get another opportunity when MI takes on Pune Warriors India (PWI) at home on Friday.

Remarkable

Levi's IPL story is remarkable. When he put a reserve price of $50,000 on himself, not even the likes of Shaun Pollock and Jonty Rhodes could nudge their wealthy employer to bid for the anonymous cricketer at the auction in Bangalore.

However, no sooner had the South African 24-year-old clouted 13 sixes and five fours to make a 51-ball undefeated 117 against New Zealand at Hamilton in a Twenty20 international, MI — with Australian Andrew Symonds announcing retirement — snapped him up for $4,00,000.

The fastest century maker in Twenty20 is the odd man out of the three headline making South Africans — the others being seam bowlers Vernon Philander and Marshal de Lange. The 35-ball 50 and man of the match start in the IPL should keep attention riveted on him what with the ICC Twenty20 World Cup about six months away.

Right from the explosive opening pair in Sachin Tendulkar and Sanath Jayasuriya, MI has shown a definite tendency to pick and choose batsmen who like to be bold and brave.

But results have been disappointing barring a few big hitting undertakings from the likes of Shikhar Dhawan, Adrian Blizzard and Davy Jacobs. It appears Levi could turn out to be far more consistent.

While in the inaugural season MI lost its opening match (to Royal Challengers Bangalore), it has made winning starts against CSK (Cape Town, 2009), Rajasthan Royals (Brabourne, 2010) and Delhi Daredevils (2011, Delhi).

Only concern

The facile win against CSK with the likes of Levi, Lasith Malinga, Kieron Pollard, Pragyan Ojha, Ambati Rayudu and James Franklin playing their part augurs well for the team. The only concern though is the injury suffered by Sachin Tendulkar who left the scene taking a blow from left-arm seamer Doug Bollinger.

After a lot of disputes with the BCCI on a variety of matters there have been plenty of positive developments for PWI with the team owners Sahara India buying Australian captain Michael Clarke for the last six matches.

PWI will be missing Yuvraj Singh (recovering from a germ cell cancer treatment), Graeme Smith (ankle injury) for the entire season and Angelo Mathews for a couple of matches.

There's hope that former India captain Sourav Ganguly, who did not have great time with Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), will bring his wealth of experience and knowledge to turnaround the fortunes for PWI in its second season.

Aggressive players

He has some aggressive players like Jesse Ryder, Luke Wright, Marlon Samuels and Alfonso Thomas among the overseas players and Indians in Robin Uthappa, Manish Pandey, Rahul Sharma and Murli Karthik to bank upon.

Last year PWI lost seven matches in a row after two wins against Kings XI Punjab and Kochi Tuskers and more importantly it lost both the home and away matches to MI.

Its owners have planned an elaborate opening ceremony when it plays its first home match against Kings XI Punjab on Sunday at the Subrata Roy Sahara Stadium. A win against MI would make the celebrations at Pune more memorable.

It was 2007. We were at Trent Bridge. The veteran cricket photographer Patrick Eagar was covering his 300th Test. He was kind enough to spare a few minutes for a chat, a wide-ranging discussion on cricket photography. At the end of the interview I asked him to name a cricketer who was tough to shoot. He considered the question for a few seconds. Here’s his response:

“I find Tendulkar quite difficult to photograph. That’s probably because I’ve seen more of Lara in the one-day situation than Tendulkar. You have to admire some of the inventiveness in some of Lara’s shots. I’ve seen Tendulkar in a slightly more passive mould. I find it very difficult to take a picture of Tendulkar that has people saying, ‘What a good batsman!’ I don’t know why; need to work it out.’

I thought of Eagar’s statement yesterday when Mahesh (@cornerd) pointed me to a Tendulkar six off Albie Morkel in the opening match of the IPL. It was the third over of the run-chase. In my farewell post to Rahul Dravid I had complained about how future generations would find it hard to understand his essence. They could watch his clips on YouTube, I had said, but would never understand his waiting game, his immaculate construction of an innings that underscored his greatness.

In backyard parlance this shot – at least at this point – would be termed a slog. Tendulkar needs to reach for the ball. He’s too far away. He’s gone against the famous coaching maxim: get as close to the ball as possible. Now he needs to manufacture the shot rather than flow with it.

:09 – Front leg almost back on the ground, faces extra cover. Back leg rooted parallel to the ground. Bat reaching for the ball.

:09 – His body then lunges further to the right. The weight of the back leg is shifting to his toes. The head continues to be still.

:10 – The bat is way away from the body. The back foot weight is now on his toes. The front leg is rooted. The head continues to remain still.

At this particular freeze-frame, Tendulkar’s stroke is bordering on the ungainly. He has committed to a shot and has decided to finish it through. The effort in reaching for the ball is apparent.

:11 – The back leg is flat on the ground. The front foot has remained rooted. And the bat has got much closer to his body. His balance is back. By the end of the second, he looks as if he’s played a cover-drive.

In less than one second, Tendulkar has converted a potentially ugly shot into a luminous one. He has actually reversed the natural flow of the stroke – striking a six with a monstrous bat before commanding his whole system to change direction in less than a second.

The rest is an orgasm. As the weight transfers from his back foot to the front foot, you feel an electricity shoot through you. The bodily movement is so natural, so innately graceful. I realized that the final few seconds of the video had more of an effect on me than the six itself. It’s the follow-through that helps the intoxication set in.

One of my coaches once saw me play an ugly hoick and said: “I don’t care where the shot starts as long as it ends in a correct way”. Tendulkar started by charging down the track to a ball that was away from his body. He then struck the ball away from his body. He finished as if he had creamed a text-book perfect cover-drive. All in less than five seconds.

Gideon Haigh recently spoke about Tendulkar’s technique. He said Tendulkar was a batsman who seems to have not been taught how to bat but rather intuited his technique from first principles. I agree. No batsman can be taught to bat this way. No batsman can be made to look so beautiful even when he is actually doing something that’s against the textbook.

These are the kind of shots that make Tendulkar such a good batsman across all formats. He can be inventive and audacious, yet he eventually works around the basics. He is not a batsman flouting the fundamentals. His genius lies in the fact that he’s found a way to use the basics even when he’s going against the rules.

I'm not complaining but he could have completed that shot with a full follow through and finished with the typical Sachin-Nod(Watch 2000 Nairobi knock against Aus esp the down the track 4 off Mcgrath) of the head that he used to do in 90's would have been Awesome. But Still this is EPIC.

So far the Indian Premier League (IPL-V) has oscillated between the ordinary and spectacular.

A handful of batsmen have produced breathtaking displays, some noted fast and seam bowlers have made a bigger impact with lightning fast deliveries and plenty of variations in pace and the slow bowlers have shown cunning and craft on helpful surfaces.

Lately Albie Morkel, Jesse Ryder and Steve Smith have been in the forefront with stirring endeavours with the bat, but without doubt this has been an IPL in which the fast bowlers have dominated on all types of wickets and stolen the thunder from the batsmen.

Seen as an ‘IPL Derby Clash', the rival teams for Monday's match at the Wankhede Stadium — Mumbai Indians and Delhi Daredevils — will largely depend on their seam attack of Lasith Malinga, Munaf Patel and Kieron Pollard (MI) and Morne Morkel, Umesh Yadav, Doug Bracewell and Irfan Pathan (DD).

The MI trio has captured 28 wickets while the DD foursome has half of that tally.

Interesting match-up

A full house at the ‘D' Road venue would expect a contest of sorts between the Daredevils captain Virender Sehwag and Malinga.

A little over a year ago in the ICC World Cup final, Malinga bowled his first spell like a true tearaway and silenced the jam-packed stadium by winning a leg-before appeal against Sehwag.

His injury was the only disappointing news for MI after it beat CSK in the inaugural match on April 4. After ten days of medical attention, Tendulkar batted for almost an hour at the Wankhede on Saturday facing throw downs from video analyst Dhananjay.

While MI's seam attack has delivered admirable results, skipper Harbhajan Singh has run up a poor average of one for 101, with Rajasthan Royals' Owais Shah's hefty shots doing much of the damage (none for 43) to his bowling figures.

It would be interesting to see if MI will bring in either Thisara Perera, Australian Clint Mckay or South African left-arm spinner Robin Peterson for the out-of-form James Franklin.

The Daredevils batting line-up received a big boost with Kevin Pietersen and Mahela Jayawardene playing their part in their team's big eight wicket win against CSK at the Kotla. And now New Zealand captain Ross Taylor too has made himself available.

MI has won five matches out of the eight against the Daredevils; in fact the last four, two times at the Kotla and one each at the Brabourne Stadium and Wankhede.

That has become the norm now. I could recall two other catches which were grassed but these days cricketers have become like footballers skilled at acting. I didn't want to raise that issue but that looked not out similar to Jonty's grassed catch in 97 SB Tri series 1st final.

WoW finally some sense, Kumble's effect?
I don't think that Sachin is a good choice, he struggles to make hard decisions and he should leave the team selection to Kumble.
Not a huge fan of MI, but cannot help it since Sachin is there.
I hope to see Harbhajan, Pollard dropped.
IMO, they should have gone for Botha and make him the Captain, he was a decent captain for the proteas.
Edit : Buy Botha in this auction! Ohja and Botha two good spinners.

May watch some matches but Not supporting it this year. Frankly there will be no joy even if the team wins it this year.

Indha rosham pona varushame vandhuchu after 8-0 but I thought we could win England test series @ home. But losing to england @ home and batting average dropping by 3 points must be addressed and cannot be covered up. I cannot bring myself to wish for the team to lose but I chose to distance myself. He generally had this thing against left armers(Vaas) bringing it in quicker to the pads. His aggressive instinct sometimes (like yesterday) gives his wicket away when he tries to whip the ball towards midwicket fence. However, Ponting & Tendulkar batting together is indeed a dream. I would drop Munaf permanently and bring in the Kid Bhumrah(???). DK @ 3, Pollard always at 4.

Rohit/Rayudu should movedown@ 5 &6. Mitchell Johnson & Ponting (bowler&capt) combo could be good but we have to wait and see in the long run. Bhajji ain't bad. I thought the ball was a 6 until this giant jumps out of nowhere and catches it in mid-air. I could see some good team spirit which was missing in 2011&12.

IMHO it was a marginal decision that could have gone bothways. Far from a plumb LBW. But that's no reason for his reaction. Remember him giving the same reaction against his decision in Perth last year whe he fell to Mitchell Starc. That was more closer.....

Dinesh Karthik, the Mumbai Indians wicketkeeper-batsman, is enjoying his time at No. 3. Batting up the order, Karthik said after setting up Mumbai's victory over Delhi Daredevils with an explosive 86, allowed him to take advantage of the Powerplay.

Karthik's half-century came after Mumbai were reduced to 1 for 2, with Sachin Tendulkar and Ricky Ponting dismissed within the first two overs of the match. It came after knocks of 37 (a steadying innings against Chennai Super Kings after another poor start for Mumbai) and 60 (against Royal Challengers Bangalore, in a game where Mumbai fell two runs short). The tournament's leading run-scorer so far, Karthik's runs have come at a strike-rate of 166, easily the best among the top 10 batsmen on the runs-aggregate chart.

"When I bat at No. 3, it gives me the opportunity to play in the Powerplay. It's a slot that I really like batting at," Karthik said after the Daredevils game. "It is important that when a team like Mumbai Indians gives you the opportunity up at the top, you have got to [repay] their faith, and show some effort and get some runs."

Karthik strung together a 131-run stand with Rohit Sharma at over 10 runs an over. Rohit provided him with ideal support, Karthik said: "Rohit and I put up a big partnership and the way he batted was just beautiful. He was giving me the strike when I required it and, towards the end, he hit the big shots after I got out."

Ponting and Tendulkar began this year's IPL with a half-century stand against Royal Challengers, albeit at a little over a run a ball, but have not been able to contribute much with the bat since. Ponting followed up his opening-game 28 with scores of 6 and 0. Despite his failures with the bat, Karthik said, Ponting was still having a big influence on the team.

"The intensity he brings on the field has been out of the world," he said. "Probably in terms of runs he has not had a great IPL thus far, but just the intensity he brings towards captaincy and trying to bring the unit together [is admirable]. He is a great captain."
