View Full Version : Dialogue

After watching Yes, Minister last night, I was trying to think of movies that are great because of their dialogue.

There are movies famous for their speeches, like Parashakthi or Kattabomman, but that's not quite the same thing.

There are movies which are famous for their jokes. Something like Thai Maman has similar ambitions to Yes, Minister, but the execution is not nearly anywhere as good.

The last time I rewound to listen to dialogue again, it was a comedy track with MS Bhaskar as a poetry-quoting bachelor. (How often does anyone not Bharatiar get quoted?)

good thread - i wanted to start it for a long time....we can start a poll for greatest dialogue writers too...

my candidates:
maniratnam (short circuiting long sequences style)
k.bagayraj (for tangential yet hard-hitting style)
sujata (because he is sujata)

I meant to mention Crazy Mohan myself -- funny but narrow in range.

What powerful dialogues did Saamy have? It's been a while since I saw it but I remember it as a long advertisement for Vikram's physique rather than a movie notable for dialogue.

Visu in his self-directed films, the early days, when not self indulgent.

Also, Visu the scriptwriter for Tillu Mullu, Netrikann, Mr. Bharath & Nallavanukku Nallavan.

Did Manivannan write Thai Maman? Muthal Vasantham was another Manivannan/Satyaraj movie with better than average dialogues.

Seems like kind of a sad list so far, though...

Not for 'nAyagan.' But I agree with your general point that Mani Ratnam is right up there when it comes to dialogue whether he writes it or hires someone else to do it.

One reason could be the tradition in parts of TN to give this name to the 6th child (I had a friend with this name and he was the 6th child with 5 elder sisters).

When it comes to dialogue, I have always liked the ones from:

K Baghyaraj
Manivannan
Sujatha ----> too technical / informative.. recently started liking his work
Visu ---> great in Thillu Mullu.... those who had watched Hindi can confirm whether its a translation work or not

Maniratnam & Crazy Mohan --> depends on the film .. 50~50

Kamal ---> now a days I feel all his films are written & directed by Kamal... I like the dialogues from his serious films more than in his time pass comedies..

Mu Ka is definitely a good writer in B&W era.... not sure about Paasa Paravaigal, Paalaivana Rojakkal etc.

& last but not the least...

I don't want to know who the writer is, I like it because the scene has...
Puratchi kalaignar
Annan Anja Singam

&

Nakkals from Sathyaraj

From this week's Ananda Vikatan..

Seeman was the writer for PASUMPONN

As far as Dialogues are concerned no one can come near to NT sivaji ganesan becos he was extremely talented and also he mostly belonged to B/W,historic,periob subject era where dialogues played a very vitol role.

After when the cinema industyr moved to next gen i.e social subjects, I liked the way VISU handled dialogues for family subjects.
How can one forget that famous dialogue conversation between VISU and RAGUVARAN in AVM's SAMSARAM ATHU MINSARAM.
The whole sequence would be Initiated by Visu's wife in that movie.
Raguvaran would give the monthly share to his mom and say,This month I ve decreased my share because my wife has gone to maternity period to her native.
His mom will say u cant be so calculative 4 everything in this world and say that Every Mother should carry her baby in stomach for 10 months. This is a general calculative period,But u were 10 months 11 days.Did I drop u 11 days since the period was over?
Then that famous confrontation between VISU and raguvaran takes place.
EVERGREEN SCENE

Looks like the dialogs of 'kanagavEl kAkka' are interesting (by writer pA Raghavan)
