There are quite a number of Raaja's songs which I love and just about recently, I got the opportunity to watch them on screen. What a waste of good songs :? Can't remember much now but one of them is definitely Aanantha Raagam from Panner Pushpangal. And I agree with PR on the Madai Thiranthe song...Chandrasekhar and his red clown suit are a definite eye-sore!

I don't think people should simply pass comments on "videos" of BR songs just by seeing youteeb stuff.

One has to see the whole movie to appreciate how each of them so nicely fit into the narration. Simple example - the most celebrated 16 vayadhinilE!

That doesn't mean that "stand alone" videos were always unimpressive for BR. There are tons of great samples - sigappu rOjAkkaL, tik-tik-tik are a couple of quick recalls!

Personally I'm not a fan of picturisation of nizhalkaL songs - those that I musically regard as among the best ever in TFM! However, more than BR, it were those artists who couldn't perform, IMO. Had it been even 25% of what KH-RK could generally do, they would have turned out to be great numbers.

Personally I'm not a fan of picturisation of nizhalkaL songs - those that I musically regard as among the best ever in TFM! However, more than BR, it were those artists who couldn't perform, IMO. Had it been even 25% of what KH-RK could generally do, they would have turned out to be great numbers.
In BR films, if the actors *act*, it is in spite of BR and definitely not because of BR.

Please don't get me started about BR songs - Extreme close-up montages of actors grinning, gubeer gubeer nu thalaya thookaradhu, ladies starring wide-eyed and dumb, with angels and paraphernalia to boot!

MM - Yeah the songs were woven into the narrative and of course, it had Nadigar Thilagam :)

At the minimum, BR had done four movies with Kamalahasan (out of which two had Sridevi) that had above average, decent picturizations and one with Sivaji which is quite exemplary. Add kadalOrakkavidhaigaL that had songs that are powerful on-screen.

He had Niwas for the first 5 movies who had done some brilliant camera work for the time period. ninaivO oru paravai / indha minmiNikku were way advanced for the time period they appeared. (I'm not allowing my personal grAmaththu bias here, B(K) :-) )

30 years after sendhoorappoovE, I still feel the on-screen things endearing (while I can't endure many acclaimed ones of current big names even a couple of times). Even the poovarasam poo has a ton of nice things going on, if you look for innovations for the time period.

So, my indignation was against unjust flogging of an innovator in TF and such ones are rare in its history! It was not BR's fault that IR's standards were way beyond what TF could ever match with (technological and other limitations). That way, 'ninnukkOri' is a comedy piece on screen!

Another thing, how many TF directors had EVER had the courage to make lead actors out of Sudhakar, Pandiyan, Sathyaraj and the likes and made silver jubilee stuff? (People had to come to theater to watch songs those days and there were any number of repeat viewers, songs like the alaigaL Oyvathillai ones which people can easily trash today as funnily picturized ones were the rage of youngsters when released who made it to the theater just to watch Ayiram thAmarai and kAdhal Oviyam).

I repeat, youteeb is NOT the way to measure the picturization of a TF song! There are few directors in TF ever who could conceptualize a song like 'vizhiyil vizhundhu' for the first time!

3. Kaadhal Oviyam - Nothing wrong with the picturisation, but when hearing the audio alone we can feel the tune is much richer than the picturisation.. Infact this is what I feel with most of BR songs........

4. One duet song in neengal kettavai with Archana and the second hero in that movie... Arumaiyana song and your mood about that song vanishes into dark once u see Archana and that guy in a paarkave kan koosum oru costume

5. Thenmozhi from Solla Thudikuthu manasu - Super melodic song only to be wasted by the director ...... Infact all the songs in this movie were amazing..but other than the poove semboove nothing else remains in ur memory only bcoz of the picturisation of those songs...

I think the "better" TF directors have an inner conflict all the time - whether to accommodate a song (unavoidable in the IFM scenario even in 2010, due to the culture this and that) as a "realistic" one or a total fantasy.

In addition, TF music had some phenomenal talents disproportionate to their project managers :-)

R Sundarrajan (a start-up, first film youngster with some good ideas but a lot of limitations - financially, technologically and creativity-wise) v/s the firmly grounded genius Ilayaraja. I'm glad that RS at least thought of presenting the song in the "as it happened in real-life" mode, rather than risking to get into a fantasy mode :-)

OTOH, that he could more than do justice to the 'yEh AththA' in fantasy mode speaks for his capabilities as a director!

I think the director (Balu M I guess, so I wont blame him) and so the choreographer should be blamed for O Vasantha Raaja.

Raaja has used mirudhangam in the pallavi and first charanam with different thaalams and have transformed into western in the second charanam.

So until, first charanam (including the interlude), you will see the bharathanaatiyam costume from Archana and a little less costume from Bhanu Chander. Archana tries her best to do a bit of bharathanaatiyam and we end up seeing a bit of both BS (ting) and Archana (violin) in the end of the prelude.

when the second interlude starts, Raaja transforms into western and so is the costume of Archana (note: Bhanu Chander stays topless) into a pant and bottom-knot shirt and doing a bit of lazyy dancing in the beach.

Summary is that the choreographer has gone by books to use bharathanaatiyam (costume) for mirudhangam and western (costume) for drums.. Idhuku poi avara thittalaama :lol2:

IMO it will be fair to say that in the late 70's and early 80's IR gave songs that wud have been best for a seperate music album and show cased his skills and free flowing creativity...... and not to forget VM who was at his lyrical best and free from other aspirations (Money + Fame)....So antha time la many songs were just too much for a particular situation or a movie..... Stalwarts like Mahendran or BR or MR had handled that adroitly but first time directors were not too adept in handling that........

Also I feel, Late 80's and 90's la IR gave many songs that are more apt for the movie and situations..... so the visual medium complemented the music and vice versa.....

his Bass guitar prominence kinda faded out in late 90s. Till 1995 there was bass guitar with all the gusto - checkout Raasave unnai vidamaaten from Aranmanai kili which has very good picturisation for 65% of the song - remaining 35% the lady in the picture spoils it.
Off late Bass guitar is back with full prominence and eminence - listen to chal chalein, paa, kannukkuLLe and madhiya chennai songs.
Chal chalein has one of the worst picturiasations ever possibile and madhiya chennai takes the cake for thamizh films.

I agree. :-) However, with the exception of a few artists, most show ignorance when handling musical instruments illeengaLA?

For a naive movie-goer (most were / are) , Mohan was so adorable in that movie that ran for a silver jubilee - and the success was powered by Raja's name & songs. (The loud arrival of Gounder was enjoyed by many as well at that time).

Any negative opinion on the "songs on screen" would have killed the movie then :-)

Though "popular opinion" should not be a criteria for the hub, though the picturization didn't measure up to the greatness of the song in every respect, I find it difficult to classify as a bad / worst case as well.

The song situation - of an affluent girl writing a poem that slips through the window, falls in a poor neighborhood "store" houses and getting composed into a song was so enjoyable to me personally. I felt very real, going by any average TN town neighborhood - Chennai is no exception.

We don't get such nice "situations" that often in our movies:-)
