Johnson calls for more Australian domination
Cricinfo staff
February 27, 2010
Mitchell Johnson wants Australia to continue dominating New Zealand after their strong performance in the opening Twenty20 in Wellington on Friday. Johnson was Man of the Match in the crushing six-wicket win, which was set up by some extreme speed from Australia's fast bowlers.
New Zealand were dismissed for 118, with Johnson (3 for 19), Shaun Tait and Dirk Nannes combining for seven victims as they unleashed spells touching 150kph. "I just think we're in a good state of mind at the moment and we're looking forward to keeping, I guess, dominating," Johnson said after the match. "When we've got a few guys in our side who can bowl ... 150-plus, it probably does make a bit of a difference.
"You don't really get an easy run at it if first-change and second-change can bowl that quick pace as well. It makes it tougher for their guys. I'm pretty glad we're not facing us actually."
The Australians can wrap up a 2-0 result in the Twenty20s with a win in Christchurch on Sunday before the one-day international and Test series complete the tour. "Definitely guys were a little bit nervous coming over," Johnson said. "We knew that New Zealand love the shorter forms of the game and do pretty well at it. There was nerves in the dressing room. I definitely felt it."
James Franklin, who top scored for the hosts with 43, believes his team can fight back from the opening disappointment. "With Twenty20 it comes down to a few guys doing exceptionally well on the night and we just didn't have that," he told NZPA. "We know if we can turn up as a group then three or four of us really stand up and contribute."

24.5 Hopes to Taylor, SIX!!, And again, this time he goes even bigger and longer, carts it over mid wicket from a similar length to get himself a six! Lovely shot...
24.4 Hopes to Taylor, FOUR!!, Taylor comes on the frontfoot and gets under it nicely, slogs it across the line over mid wicket for four, wonderful timing and placement from Rossco there! He's an expert at playing that slog!

29.2 Hauritz to Taylor, FOUR!!, trifle short and trifle amount of room, that's enough for Rossco as he rocks back before slapping it past gully, that simply raced away off the bat and even a dive wasn't good enough in the end

New Zealand v Australia, 2nd ODI, Auckland
Series set to simmer in re-match
The Preview by Peter English
March 5, 2010
Match Facts
Ross Taylor's value has increased following his part-time promotion to captain and the injury to Jacob Oram
Saturday, March 6, Auckland
Start time 1200 (2300 GMT)
The Big Picture
It didn't take long for the New Zealand-Australia rivalry to turn fiery and an opening win for the hosts should lead to more animation from the visiting big brothers. Scott Styris led his team to a last over victory in Napier on Wednesday and his brutal innings included being on the receiving end of a nose-to-nose exchange with Mitchell Johnson.
Both teams expect more simmering over the remaining four games in the Chappell-Hadlee Series, which will give an indication of where the current Australians should be rated. Ricky Ponting's side is still No. 1, but its performances against West Indies are taking on new value now Chris Gayle's men are losing to Zimbabwe. New Zealand, the No. 4, are on a six-game winning streak after ending Australia's 12 ODI victories in a row.
The hosts are desperate for the return of Daniel Vettori in Auckland after he missed game one with a neck injury. Australia don't play Vettori well and he provides some crucial variety to an attack filled with medium pacers to follow the extreme pace of Shane Bond.
Form guide (most recent first)
New Zealand WWWWW
Australia LWNWW
Watch out for...
Ross Taylor was captain for the first match and showed he could deal with the extra responsibility with a game-high 70 in the successful chase. While Taylor will hope Vettori returns, New Zealand will be satisfied that their No.2 can juggle all the jobs. Australia will just want him out because he averages 40 against them in 18 ODIs.
Until Mitchell Johnson headbutted Styris' helmet it was Shane Watson who was the target of the local fans. That will change and it will be fascinating to see how Johnson, a usually shy personality, deals with the extra attention after he was fined 60% of his match fee. Johnson is Australia's most experienced one-day bowler, but New Zealand aren't one of his favourite teams. His 16 wickets against them have come at 39.25 and he goes at 5.36 an over. Both numbers are considerably higher than his career records.
Team news
Jacob Oram was helped off the ground at Napier after hurting his left knee and the result was a tear of the patella tendon, ruling him out for up to a month. A neck problem is still troubling Vettori, who didn't bat or bowl at training on Friday, and Nathan McCullum is on standby. If Vettori is cleared he can come into the spot left by Oram. Michael Mason, the Central Districts bowler, has joined the squad as bowling cover.
New Zealand (possible) 1 Brendon McCullum (wk), 2 Peter Ingram, 3 Martin Guptill, 4 Ross Taylor, 5 James Franklin, 6 Neil Broom, 7 Scott Styris, 8 Daniel Vettori (capt), 9 Daryl Tuffey, 10 Tim Southee, 11 Shane Bond.
Australia don't have much room to move in their 13-man squad, with Adam Voges and Clint McKay the only back-up options. They should keep faith in the same side but their batsmen are under orders not to waste their starts.
Australia (possible) 1 Shane Watson, 2 Brad Haddin (wk), 3 Ricky Ponting (capt), 4 Michael Clarke, 5 Cameron White, 6 Michael Hussey, 7 James Hopes, 8 Mitchell Johnson, 9 Nathan Hauritz, 10 Ryan Harris, 11 Doug Bollinger.
Pitch and conditions
Eden Park has a current capacity of 12,000 and the match will be a sell-out. It is another rugby ground, meaning some of the boundaries are tiny. The top temperature is expected to be 26C and there is a chance of an afternoon shower.
Stats and trivia
•New Zealand have a mixed record at Eden Park, with 28 wins and 29 losses, while Australia have nine successes and five failures
•Daniel Vettori sits fourth on the all-time wicket-takers at the ground. His 19 wickets in 22 games put him behind Chris Cairns, Chris Harris and Gavin Larsen.
•New Zealand's 340 for 5 is the biggest score at Eden Park, coming as they chased down Australia's 336 for 4 in 2007. Ross Taylor got 117 that day
Quotes
"We've got a little bit of work to do before the next game."
Ricky Ponting
''They're obviously going to come back twice as hard now and we're just going to have to step up again.''

Crowd antics spur on Johnson
Cricinfo staff
March 7, 2010
Ricky Ponting was impressed with the way Mitchell Johnson dealt with a hostile crowd to help Australia level the series in Auckland. Johnson became a target in New Zealand after his headbutt of Scott Styris in the opening game on Wednesday and he stepped up with 4 for 51 in Saturday's 12-run victory.
Johnson had two security guards escort him off the ground when he batted and the crowd booed him when he prepared to bowl. He kissed his Australian badge and looked to the stands before he ran in.
''If his by-play with the crowd affected the way he played I'd be worried, but it spurred him on, if anything,'' Ponting said after the game. ''Sometimes you've just got to try to have a bit of fun with the crowd. As much as they're giving it to you, you're the worst person in the world to them, but you've got to try to have fun with it otherwise it's going to be a long four or five weeks over here."
New Zealand were chasing 266 in 45 overs but Johnson made it difficult with the dismissals of Brendon McCullum and James Franklin before returning for Daryl Tuffey and Shane Bond. ''There were chants going around the ground but Mitch came back with wickets for us," Ponting said. "That was a good result for him and the team.''
Johnson had started by delivering a high bouncer to Styris, who was fined 15% of his match fee compared to the bowler's 60%, and the ball went for five wides. ''We might have talked about it being a bouncer, mightn't we? I'm not that unhappy if he bowls a bouncer when I've told him to," Ponting said.
''He was trying to make a statement and that's fine. He had a very good game of cricket for us. He was probably the difference. It wasn't a great performance by us by any stretch of the imagination, but we did enough to win.'' The third match of the five-game series is in Hamilton on Tuesday.

Australia 248/4 (47.2 ov)
Australia won by 6 wickets (with 16 balls remaining)
Australia win by the comfortable margin of six wickets with 16 balls to spare. Australia outplayed New Zealand in all departments today and will take a lot of momentum into the 4th ODI in Auckland on Thursday.
Haddin (110) and Ponting (69) added 151 for the second wicket and the match was over pretty early in that sense with both players looking in total control at the crease.

seems like good days are here again for pricky! at his peak, he used to benefit from such dropped catches, and blatant lbws not being given. In the past two years, this benefit was not happening. Now, it has started again for this luckiest cricketer.

Michael Clarke has spoken publicly for the first time since his sudden departure from Australia's tour and his subsequent break-up with Lara Bingle. Clarke fronted a packed media conference at Wellington's Westpac Stadium, where he mentioned the support he had received from Shane Warne and insisted the media frenzy following him and his former fiancée would not affect the focus on his cricket.

Good morning everyone and welcome to Cricinfo's coverage of the second and final Test between New Zealand and Australia at Seddon Park. The toss is just a short while away. The weather looks great for cricket, not sunny but not too cloudy either.
Toss: Ponting has won the toss and Australia will bat. Shane Watson is back and 'poor old' Phillip Hughes sits out, according to the captain.
Mathew Sinclair comes in for Peter Ingram, Tuffey sits out and Jeetan Patel comes in. The president of New Zealand Cricket presents a memento to Vettori for playing his 100th Test, only the second New Zealand player to do so, after Stephen Fleming.
