Don't know much about Naganandhini. But nice to hear K.Jamunarani sing a nice love duet. If she had had the opportunity to sing more such songs she could have added more color to TFM of the time. But, in accordance with the bylaws of Tamil film industry (specifically KPC Section 1705.24-tc, amended 1955), the film industry had to go typecast her as a comedy singer and ruin it for all of us. These bylaws are strictly followed to this day. Just look around.

For those who are not familiar with Tamil film industry bylaws... KPC stands for Kodampakkam Paithiyakkaara Code. tc stands for typecasting of course. :lol: For a moment you thought I was serious, right? :)

A nice melody by G.Ramanathan, one of the pioneers of light music in TFM.

nERRu pUnthaLir by VJ-SPB is from Raja Nee Vaazhga. Apparently starred Prabhu, Viji and Ambika. Music by K.Ravi or someone. Never heard of him before.

pArvaiyO unnidam is a lovely song from a really obscure film Nijangal Nilaikkinrana. A duet by VJ and an unknown singer. Could be T.L.Thiyagarajan or Prabhakar or Raj Seetharaman. Someone I have heard before but can't quite name him. Music sounds like Shankar-Ganesh. Could be Chandrabose too. How is that for narrowing down? :)

Today's pick is a nice lullaby by R.Balasaraswathi. An under-utilized singer with a soothing voice. Her rendition has a quality of maturity, confidence, ease and it offers a sense of comfort. No wonder she was typecast as the mother's voice and often sang lullabies. Child or adult, in time of need who doesn't long for the comfort only a mother can offer? So, in this case I don't blame the adults of Kodampakkam for typecasting. :)

As much as I like the songs from the 60s, 70s and 80s, those three decades of TFM was dominated by very few composers (who can be counted with one hand) and by very few singers (who can be counted with no more than two hands). But I try to bring the obscure to the surface.

Post 1990, the variety did return but quality... not quite! Most singers sound alike, and the composers churn out I don't know what, and the lyricists... I won't even go there.

But, when you venture into the decades before 1960 you really find a great variety of composers and singers (I know rajraj will attest this statement). It is a pleasant surprise everytime you discover a beautiful song, like today's pick, that proves the variety, and the quality, of music that was available in the 50s and 40s. It brings me so much pleasure to share that richness with y'all (thanks for the opportunity RR).

In the nicely contrasting voices of P.B.Srinivas and S.Varalakshmi, sangathis and brighas galore, comes today's pick, a nice love song. Just forgive the Telugu tint in the thogaiyaRA.

Sathyavan Savithiri (1957) directed by K.B.Nagabhushanam starred A.Nageswara Rao, S.Varalakshmi, V.Nagaiah, Relanki, Suryakala and others. More than ninety percent of the artistes and technicians involved in the film were Telugus and leads me to believe that this was a bilingual production. Probably produced by S.Varalakshmi herself.

The other day one of our fellow posters wrote to me and said that L.R.Eswari's voice being used for nightclub songs was simply inexcusable, because LRE's voice is naturally filled with compassion. The poster asked me to listen to one of LRE's songs whenever I was feeling let down. That is a different song, not today's pick.

Over the years I had written so much about LRE's versatility but had never picked up on this specific quality of her voice at the level the poster did. And then I started thinking (yeah, I do that sometimes :lol: ) and doing some research. I realized how true the poster was. I would have gone all my life not having realized that if not for that poster. Songs like today's pick are very few when you consider LRE's entire body of work. But if you take the time to research similar songs by her you will probably come to the same conclusion.

So, thank you poster! If you are reading this and listening to today's pick, I know your eyes will not be dry.

Thanks and I completely agree with you about the melancholy. Have you noticed another special quality? Vulnerability. Not just sad, but vulnerable. You can feel that she is wounded, broken and in need of a big old hug(kAthOduthAn nAn pAduvEn). Even when she is belting out she can sound so vulnerable(pattaththu rANi, Ananda thANdavamO). Despite the fact that she is dancing in a nightclub or getting high on drugs/alcohol she is innocent, pure, and hurting, and you can feel it.
And there is the vulnerable in need of some loving(ammammA kELadi thOzhi).

Sporting a shotgun she valiantly protects her children and the entire village from the bad guys who go around pludering one village after another and killing people. Today's pick is when Savithiri tells her boys the story of their father.

The film directed by M.Karnan(no surprise) starred Jaisankar(no surprise), Manorama, Usha, Halam and others. Manorama plays an adAvadi character who owns and operates a pub in the village. And there is actually a native American character in the film wearing feathers and loin cloth. :huh:

This is M.S.Sheela's debut in TFM and it was proudly announced in the opening credits. And then what happened to her? I don't know.

Ini Oru Suthanthiram was probably inspired by the award-winning Kannada film Thabarane Katha that released one year earlier. The story is supposed to be about a freedom fighter in his golden age and his continuing fight for a fair society and a respectable place in it for him.

The film was directed by Manivannan and had Sivakumar playing the freedom fighter. There were Chandrasekar, Nalini, Raja, Rekha, Pandian, Jeevitha, Sathyaraj, Janakaraj, Kovai Sarala and many more. Unfortunately, the film was marred by too many side stories, too much violence and just too much negativity and gloom. When you came out of the theater you felt hopeless and helpless. That is a few hours of my life I would like to forget.

Let us forget the film and enjoy the song. Today's pick is a nice rustic one.

If I remember correctly, the story is about the harmful effects of smoking. So, thanks for the good message the filmmakers were trying to convey to the society.

Today's pick is a nice tune. However, there seems to be something missing. That one component that would make the beauty of the song to burst out.

The first bit in the interlude after the first pallavi is so unmistakably L.Vaidyanathan. I have heard the same (or very similar) bit in at least two other songs by LV.

B.S.Saroja (not to be confused with B.Sarojadevi) was a lead actress at the time and has acted in quite a few Tamil and Malayalam films. She later married director T.R.Ramanna (brother of T.R.Rajakumari). B.S.Saroja was honored by Tamilnadu Government with MGR Award (for 2001, but the announcement came in 2004).

P.Leela made her playback debut when she was fifteen years old and in today's song she is only in her late teens.

According to a famous film statistician, lots of Sarojas those days. Baby Saroja in the 30s, another Saroja in the 40s, B.S.Saroja, E.V.Saroja, B.Sarojadevi, Saroja (Thangavelu) in the 50s-60s,...

B.S.Saroja produced a film titled Kizahkku Malai (1995) and launched her son Ganesh Ramanna as film director and music director. Came to know of this film only yesterday.

female lead of Madras to Pondicherry is kannada actress Kalpana. I think she has acted less in Tamil films like "kattilA thottilA" etc.

anyway "bakOdA khader" was popularised from this film.

other lovely songs like "my friend nenjathil enna", " payaNam enge - ( the hindi version is a super hit in Bombay to Goa") and of course my fav TMS solo "Stop listen proceed... malarai pOnRa paruvamE" :P are also tooo good to hear.

Thanks for the details. Kalpana must have been very young in this film. She played a twenty year old in Kattila Thottila which came seven years later. Oh yes, Pakoda Khader. :) Our comedians even had unforgettable names (kuLLamani, Loose Mohan, Usilai Mani, Kallapetti Singaram, Omakuchi Narasimhan, Thengai Srinivasan, Kavundamani, Oruviral Krishnarao, Thayirvadai Desigan, etc.)

Yes, the film is SSR, Vijayakumari(?), Jayalalitha starrer. Athavan uthiththa is when JJ or VK plots to kill SSR on a mountain, I think. Or, may be I am confusing with another film.

There are some songs which havent been played in radios. I am giving a few below:
1. One duet from Thulli Odum Pulli Man (sung by Jesudas and Susila)
2. Another duet by Jesudas L.R. Easwari from Namma veettu Lakshmi (not Alankaram kalaiyamal). This song was screened for a few days but removed later on.
3. Another song from Poi Solladhe (Ravichandran Rajshri).
I do not exactly remember either the words or tune, but the song will be catchy.

Kanna Nalama directed by K.Balachandar starred Gemini Ganesh and Jayanthi in the lead. Like many of KB's other films this film's story also was built around the heroine Jayanthi's character. She suffers, suffers and suffers. Then she gets married and then suffers, suffers and suffers again. Her only son is taken away by another woman who claims that the child is hers. Like in many other films by KB, all the men in this film also are either inefficient and can't really help the suffering heroine, or they are just vicious abusers. She suffers, suffers and suffers more and finally goes insane. She is then locked up, either in a mental asylum or a prison cell, I am not sure. In the end she becomes sane again and gets her child back... I think.

In a typical KB-Kannadasan fashion the song tells a part of the story. LRE brings her attitude, energy, and a touch of sarcasm to the song. Another good song from the film is the TMS solo peRReduththa uLLam.

Gemini and Jayanthi's son is really Major and Kumari Padmini's child. It was changed when there was a earthquake in trichy :shock:
