Very beautiful song and nice selection dear NeelD. Thank you so much and it is one of my favourite songs. This film was produced by one Mr. Thiruvai. Annamalai, who was an ADMK functionary during MGR period and resident of Ice House, Triplicane. He produced the film in his wife's name (I dont know her name). Kannadasan was the lyricist but this song if I remember correct was by Pulamai Pithan. There is also a vague rememberance that TMS appeared in this film as a singer. I saw this film during its first run but I dont know if it ever was released again.

Nayakkarin Magal directed by K.S.Gopalakrishnan was one of the last of it's kind. A non-bhakti historical film. There were Rajarishi and Ilangesvaran in the mid to late 80s. Rajarishi did average business, thanks to Sivaji Ganesan. Nayakkarin Magal and Ilangesvaran were not commercial successes. Cannot recall any historical films from the 90s. Recently there was Uliyin Osai which was also not a commercial success. Unfortunately, this genre of films seems to have fallen out of favor with Tamil film audience, unless it is a full length comedy like Imsai Arasan Irupathezham Pulikesi.

Nagaiah is supposed to have been a big hero in those days before he started playing the long suffering father type of roles. The songs he sings in Telugu films like 'Potana' and 'Tyagaraja' are lovely. He is supposed to have composed music for films in those days. Remember a Telugu song based on the raga Saranga which goes as 'adigadigo gagana seema', sung by two female voices. Excellent song.

Many of the Cochin Jews have relocated to Israel and because of that their music tradition almost disappeared. When it comes to keeping with the trend and technology T.Rajendar was always on top of things. One might say that it is an admirable quality. But, it came at a cost. He compromised heavily on melody and lyrical quality. His later songs are practically worthless garbage and a far cry from the beautiful melodies and quality lyrics of Oru Thalai Ragam, Rayil Payanangalil, Vasantha Azhaippugal, Nenjil Oru Ragam, Uyirullavarai Usha and Mythili Ennai Kathali . I wish T.Rajendar would retire from composing music while people still remember him for the songs from those old films.

November 11th is Veterans Day in the USA. A day dedicated to remember, honor and pay tribute to the war veterans. As I drive down my neighborhood, outside the police headquarters a sidewalk of three blocks is lined up with crosses, one every few feet. Each cross bears the name of a soldier and the war he/she died in. It is a humbling and at the same time a proud sight. Not to mention emotional. This decoration of the sidewalk is done twice every year. Once for Veterans Day and once for Memorial Day, a day to honor the soldiers who died in war.

Every decent and civilized nation has paid, and continues to pay, a huge price in terms of human lives and suffering for its freedom, democracy, peace, security and stability. The soldiers take the brunt of it. These are men and women who put themselves in the line of fire, take the bullets, grenades and IEDs for the rest of us, so that we can live in peace and quiet, sheltered from the brutality of the battlefield, and pursue our dreams.

Incidents that can be so shocking at the moment they happened can fade away in their intensity with time. But we never forget the sacrifices that others made for us. About a year ago several Indian commandos and other security personnel sacrificed their lives, sacrificed the future of their families, and many were injured or amputated, in their valiant effort to protect people whom they have never met - people from all walks of life, from all over the world, from many religions, languages and ethnic origins. Those selfless souls saved lives, restored peace, law and order.

If anything deserves the Nobel Peace Prize it is the courage and true sacrifice of the soldiers all over the world who are fighting for peace. Not some empty rhetoric.

To the brave, selfless and noble, I say "Thank You!".

Happy Thanksgiving!

Karpooram starred AVM.Rajan and Pushpalata in the lead. This is one of the four films D.B.Ramachandran composed music for. DBR was born in Bodinayakknur near Madurai. At a very young age he joined the famous theater group Boys Company run by Nawab Rajamanikkam Pillai where he trained in vocal music and harmonium. Later DBR started working in film industry in the orchestras of R.Sudarsanam and G.Ramanathan. DBR played the harmonium and the accordian and in rare occasions sang playback too.

DBR composed music for only four films. His lovely compositions went unappreciated and his talent went underutilized in the film industry. But he composed many devotional albums, some very popular in Seerkazhi Govindrajan's voice. DBR also worked as a musician in the dance schools of Renganayaki Jayaraman and Saroja Vaidyanathan.

Uravukku Kai Koduppom was the last film DBR composed music for. DBR's co-composer Venkatesh (not GKV) is a musician who worked for Shankar-Ganesh. In only four films DBR utilized a variety of voices (TMS, PBS, Seerkazhi, Dharapuram Sounderarajan, PS, LRE, VJ, S.Rajalakshmi, A.P.Komala, Madhuri, and T.K.Kala).

Uravukku Kai Koduppom starring Gemini Ganesh and Sowcar Janaki was directed by Y.G.Mahendran. Having already mastered the art of comedy acting YGM decided to plunge into direction. Story by Visu and direction supervision by K.S.Gopalakrishnan. The film was not a hit. Years later Visu remade the film as Samsaram Athu Minsaram which turned out to be a huge success.

nERRu pUnthaLir by VJ-SPB is from Raja Nee Vaazhga. Apparently starred Prabhu, Viji and Ambika. Music by K.Ravi or someone. Never heard of him before.

pArvaiyO unnidam is a lovely song from a really obscure film Nijangal Nilaikkinrana. A duet by VJ and an unknown singer. Could be T.L.Thiyagarajan or Prabhakar or Raj Seetharaman. Someone I have heard before but can't quite name him. Music sounds like Shankar-Ganesh. Could be Chandrabose too. How is that for narrowing down? :)
