madhu, the CD I have says that kAlam enakkoru is from a film titled "Pournami". But I couldn't find any information on a film with that title. So, I left it as a :?: rather than post an unconfirmed data. May be someone somewhere knows about Pournami.

Kaalam Enakkoru Paattezudhum song is from the film Pournami (as Neil Sir already said). I have heard it many times in Ceylon Radio but am not able to recollect other details.

Sila Nerangalil Sila Manidargalai - this song is from the film Kadhanayagan (Jai Shankar Hero). Music by R. Govardhan and I dont remember the lyricist's name. But a very beautiful song. This film has a melodious duet sung by TMS and P Susila.

AVM's sakthivel was directed by K.S.Ravikumar. It had Selva(he was much better than his brother Rajashekar), Kanaka, vijayakumar,ygmahendran,charlie and others.

the movie did average

surprisingly kanaga acted well in this movie and the main plus was Illayaraja's score.

Malligai mottu is a very nice song and picturised well too

Neel D, Thank you you, sir. YOu know "THULIR VIDUM KAALAM" song seems like composed by IR in a different dimension. The core of IR and all surrounding the core comes out perfectly in this one song. Of course IR has more incredible songs, but this song brings out some strange soft feelings like Ilam Pani Thulir vizhum kaalam or SG's Paniyum Naane. It makes SJanaki seem like an angel, whose shrieky voice scares the hell out of me most of the time. This is a rare song nobody would've heard of at all, like this I hope we can discover more and more

'oru kAdhal dEvathai' is one of my fav..

sometimes a character of a stoy makes u think that its real. Kalki's sivakAmi is one such character. adhai vachu niRaiya songs vandhAchu.. Some think that she was real - lived and loved narasimha pallavan :P

another lovely solo "KaNnan enna sonnAn" is also from this film.

Though Sridevi is the heroine, this duet is for Meera I think ( Just like 'en kaNmaNi' from chittukuruvi) .

The story was published in mAlaimadhi monthly novel and was filmed later I think.

Like madhu says, based on a Magarishi "maadha" novel. Sri Devi reprised the same-ish character (make-up illaamal) in Moondraam Pirai. The latter was also a better film experience.

Nothing stopped the love for music and entertainment that Indian people had regardless of language or genre.

Being the fusion music it is, Tamil/Indian film music has borrowed or taken inspiration from music world over, especially heavily from American music from Jazz, Rock, Pop to Hip Hop. Today we will pay tribute to Michael Jackson for all the joy he brought to us over the years. We have two songs of the same tune, heavily inspired by MJ's Billie Jean.

IR paid direct tribute to MJ, the song "Lovely Leela" is greatly inspired by one of the fastest MJ songs, really just simply superb song, Smooth Criminal. I think IR derived most of the rapid staccato like rhythms from MJ without a doubt.

Dear Neel and Madhu Sirs,
A very good selection. Actually the songs of Oppandham were played as early as in 1979 when Pudhiya Vaarppugal, Naan Vaazha Vaippen records were doing rounds. I heard this song in a Juke Box in Triplicane and repeatedly for twice or thrice. It's almost 30 years. But the film was delayed due to many reasons. This producer had another company, I think (Garuda Films) and produced films in that banner, if my memory goes right. Only 2 songs were featured in this film and the other one was a kuthu style song sung by Malaysia Vasudevan and Vani Jayaraman. It would start with the word Kalyanam and I don't remember it in full. But I heard it very long back. However, this song has remained evergreen.

Only very few have stayed till today. Some were made to stay. Many have disappeared as they should. Among some singers who have stayed solely based on their merit, originality, uniqueness of voice, clarity, impeccable pronunciation and a natural gift of sweetness of voice, Harish Raghavendra no doubt is among the top-listers.

In the commercial music scene where many singers play dirty politics even when they don't have the talent to back it up, Harish is an exception with his true love for the Tamil language, literature and poetry, music talent and above all his genuine personableness.

Today's pick is more like a poem recital than a conventional song. Who else would I rather listen to reciting poetry than HR in his sweet voice? Reminiscent of the classic "viziyil vizunthu ithayam nuzainthu", today's pick certainly deserves more attention than what so many kuththu songs undeservingly get.

Isaac Thomas provides pleasing instrumental music. Thank goodness there is no loud and looped synthetic drum beat that has become a staple in TFM since the early 90s. I certainly like the Mohiniyattam style music that is very subtly played in the beginning part of the song. The choir music style interlude by Nideesh adds some color to the song but reminds some of ARR's early songs where it was used quite often, or so it seems. Nice song lines. The songwriter writes a line about gravity and apple. Oh wait! His name is Newton. :)

Pillai Nila was famous for its script, direction and songs. Once you say Pillai Nila, Jayachandran comes to mind with the song, Raja Magal, Roja Malar, Vanil varum vennila, with beautiful picturisation. Manobala made his debut as a director in this film. And this song was even more melodious and when seen visually at the Devi Bala Theatre, it was a sure delight to watch. And the suspense was maintained till the end. A very good film, with bgm scores and songs competing each other, no wonder this film was a success.
And Meendum Oru Kadhal Kadhai was one of the best films of that year and got State award, too. Prathap Pothen and Radhika, gave their best performances. A tale of complicated characters presented perfectly with IR reigning supreme with the song, "Adhikalai Nerame) and another song with the kite (I don't remember the pallavi).
