ippa Pak team ku yaaru captain vice captain ? Its like a post apocalyptic situation now and everything has to start from scratch..

and yet our Raimsai Raja says he wants to have Afridi as test captain..

Ra-imsai (http://www.cricinfo.com/talk/content/current/multimedia/451413.html)

It also means that the PCB will announce a new captain. Some are fighting for Shahid Afridi's cause and some are looking at Abdul Razzaq because I think he is tailor-made for Twenty20 cricket. He has proven himself over a period of time and we have seen that he brings energy and enthusiasm to the dressing room. So I hope Afridi is made the captain. He has paid the price for ball-tampering - he has been heavily criticised and heavily fined. But it remains to be seen whether he concentrate on the job and deliver for Pakistan because he has been under lot of stress and pressure of late

Team news
Bangladesh's plans were hit a severe blow when Raqibul Hasan stunned the team by announcing his retirement after practice on Wednesday. His place in the squad has gone to Jahurul Islam, who scored 117 and 59 in the final of their domestic competition last week, but Aftab Ahmed will take over at No. 4 in the final XI. Mahmudullah, who impressed with a series of fine performances at No. 8 in New Zealand last month, moves up to No. 5, with Shadahat Hossain replacing Shafiul Islam as Rubel Hossain's new-ball partner. With four spinners to rotate, however, neither man is likely to do much more than take the shine off the ball.

Bangladesh 1 Tamim Iqbal, 2 Imrul Kayes, 3 Junaid Siddique, 4 Aftab Ahmed, Mahmudullah, 6 Shakib Al Hasan (capt), 7 Mushfiqur Rahim (wk), 8 Naeem Islam, 9 Abdur Razzak, 10 Rubel Hossain, 11 Shadahat Hossain

Six batsman, four bowlers? Five batsmen, five bowlers? Two seamers, two spinners? Three quicks, two spinners? Or just one spinner? There are plenty of permutations for England to consider, but Cook hinted towards the first and a duel spin attack. That would mean debuts for Carberry and Tredwell, but it would be a huge gamble to have just two frontline seamers if one of those is Broad who recently suffered back spasms. His recent nets sessions have been encouraging, however, and England seem set to take the gamble.

England (probable) 1 Alastair Cook (capt), 2 Michael Carberry, 3 Jonathan Trott, 4 Kevin Pietersen, 5 Paul Collingwood, 6 Ian Bell, 7 Matt Prior (wk), 8 Stuart Broad, 9 Tim Bresnan, 10 Graeme Swann, 11 James Tredwell

A good article by Roebuck on Swann (http://www.cricinfo.com/magazine/content/story/453218.html)

Ten years ago anyone prepared to toss the ball into the air was dismissed as a doomed romantic. Heavy bats, short boundaries and shorter matches had sent slow bowlers to the knacker's yard. Cricket had become a power game. Only freakish spinners could survive. Before that, pace was supposed to be the supreme ruler.

Perhaps it is cyclical. Somewhere along the way batsmen forgot about footwork and reading from the hand. Maybe, too, they forgot about stroking the ball into gaps or dropping it at their toes. Whatever the reason, batsmen became less confident against flighted deliveries. Swann and company have been able to exploit this weakness.

another thing is, short balls are effective only when you have pace.. at least 140 KM/H.... if you are bowling medium pace, you can be hit out of the ground...

Few players come to my mind who can play well against short balls...

Aravinda De Silva

Ricky Ponting - bit hesitant in adding him in this list... earlier, he was deadly against short balls... but later (2008/2009)... he himself made that tougher...

Rahul Dravid - no one can play short balls like this guy... another beauty is, he will still play that along the ground...

Lara / Sachin - it is just another shot for them....

Aravinda De Silva is just an amazing player to watch against short-pitched deliveries. I still remember when young Wasim Akram bowled to him in the end overs, Aravinda already halfway down the crease and hooking him for a six at Sharjah. (around 1986, I think.)

Adam Gilchrist is just another Roy Fredericks of WI. I have not seen nobody in the modern game played so well against the short-pitched deliveries than Gilchrist. Gilly just awesome.

Empire Of Cricket - India Documentary Part 6 of 6

Cricket is the de facto national sport of India. Though cricket is indubitably the most popular sport in India, it is not the nation's official national sport (a distinction held by field hockey).

Cricket in India

International cricket in India generally does not follow a fixed pattern. For example, the English schedule under which the nation tours other countries during winter and plays at home during the summer. Generally, there has recently been a tendency to play more one-day matches than Test matches. Cricket in India is managed by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), the richest cricket board in the cricket world. Indian International Cricketing Squad has also provided some of the greatest players to the world. Indian cricket has a rich history.

The Indian cricket team is currently ranked first (as of 21 March 2010) by the ICC in Tests and second (as of 21 March 2010) in ODIs. As of March 2010, the Indian team has played 437 Test matches, winning 104, losing 137 and drawing 195 of its games, with 1 match ending in a tie. India has a relatively better record in One Day Internationals, winning over 50% of matches played. Currently, Gary Kirsten is the head coach while Mahendra Singh Dhoni is the captain in all forms of the game. Under the leadership of Dhoni, the Indian team has set a national record for most back-to-back ODI wins (9 straight wins) and has emerged as one of the most formidable teams in international cricket.

Although cricket was introduced to India by European merchant sailors in the 18th-century and the first cricket club in India was established in Calcutta in 1792, India's national cricket team didn't play their first Test match until 25 June 1932 at Lord's. They became the sixth team to be granted Test cricket status. In their first fifty years of international cricket, India proved weaker than Australia and England, winning only 35 of the 196 test matches. The team, however, gained strength near the end of the 1970s with the emergence of players such as Sunil Gavaskar, Kapil Dev, Mohammed Azharuddin and the Indian spin quartet. Traditionally much stronger at home than abroad, the Indian team has improved its overseas form since the start of the 21st century. It won the Cricket World Cup in 1983 and was runners-up in 2003. It also won the inaugural World Twenty20 in 2007. The current team contains many of the world's leading players, including Sachin Tendulkar and Rahul Dravid who hold numerous cricketing world records

The Indian Premier League (often abbreviated as IPL), is a Twenty20 cricket competition initiated by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) headquartered in Mumbai and supervised by BCCI Vice President Chirayu Amin, chairman & commissioner for IPL, and CEO, Sundar Raman. It presently includes 8 teams (franchises) consisting of players from different countries. It was started after an altercation between the BCCI and the Indian Cricket League.

In 2010, IPL became the first sporting event ever to be broadcast live on the popular video sharing website YouTube. It's brand value was estimated to be around $4.13 billion (over Rs 18,000 crore) the same year. According to global sports salaries review, IPL is the second highest-paid league, based on first-team salaries on a pro rata basis, second only to the NBA. It is estimated that the average salary of an IPL player over a year would be £2.5 million.

Mike Atherton is one of those English Cricketers whose background enables them to get marked as Future England Captain before they play a first class match, and need just a few knocks here and there to be proclaimed great.
I remember when England toured India in 1993, he hadnt even made his test debut, and was shown on TV watching the action from high on the Chidambaram Stadium roof, and the English commentator goes "There's a FEC blah blah".

Fast bowlers

Lean, mean pace machines

West Indies' fast-bowling reservoir was so deep, they could have had an XI full of quick men and still have to leave some out

Tony Becca

July 12, 2010

Roberts, Holding, Croft and Garner: striking fear in the hearts of batsmen through the 70s and 80s © Getty Images

West Indies cricket and fast bowling go together like a horse and a carriage. Like their exciting middle-order batsmen, West Indies fast bowlers - and definitely so up to 20 or so years ago - seemed to pop up day after day. Most were fast enough to make batsmen tremble in their boots, and the majority of them are numbered among the best of their time - a few among the best of all time.

From the days of Learie Constantine, George Francis and Herman Griffith, through the likes of Manny Martindale, Leslie Hylton, Hines Johnson, Roy Gilchrist, Wes Hall and Charlie Griffith, to the fearsome quartet of Andy Roberts, Michael Holding, Joel Garner and Colin Croft, and later on to the likes of Malcolm Marshall, Courtney Walsh and Curtly Ambrose, fast bowlers have been the bread and butter of West Indies cricket.

Constantine, it is written, was as fast as any bowler of his time; Herman Griffith, the man who became a household name in the Caribbean after bowling Don Bradman for 0 in the fifth Test of 1930-31, was all quality. The Indians of the 1958-59 series will confirm that Gilchrist was undoubtedly one of the fastest of his time. The pair of Hall and Charlie Griffith was one of the great ones in the history of the game, and no batsman who had the misfortune of facing them in the 1970s going into the 80s, doubted the quality, the skill and the class of Roberts, Holding, Garner and Croft. They were four big men, all standing over six feet, one at 6ft 7in, and another at 6ft 8in. They were all fast but brought different skills to the combination, and batting against them was a nightmare.

So rich is the history of fast bowling in West Indies cricket that selecting the three quicks on the all-time West Indies team is no easy task. In fact, even if the job was to select an all-time West Indies team of fast bowlers, batting from No. 1 to No. 11, there would still be some great ones left behind.

The contenders

Wes Hall
A big man with an intimidating approach and follow-through, Hall was the first of the modern West Indies fast bowlers. He formed a deadly duo, first with Roy Gilchrist and then with Charlie Griffith; he and Griffith are numbered among the world's greatest fast-bowling pairs. In 48 Test matches, Hall took 192 wickets at an average of 26.38.

Charlie Griffith
The same height but much bigger than Hall, Griffith was accurate and deadly, especially so with his yorkers, which usually knocked over stumps, and his bouncers, which normally knocked down batsmen. In 28 Test matches, Griffith took 94 wickets at an average of 28.54.

Andy Roberts
If Hall was the first of the modern West Indies fast bowlers, Roberts was certainly the big brother of the breed that conquered the world - the set that included Holding, Croft and Garner. Known for his well-disguised bouncer, Roberts took 202 wickets in 47 Test matches at an average of 25.61.

Michael Holding
The Rolls Royce of fast bowlers, Holding was smooth from run-up to delivery. He was fast - as fast if not faster than any of his colleagues - he was fiery, and yet he had the look of a choir boy, even at The Oval in 1976 while destroying England with 14 wickets for 149 runs. In 60 Test matches, Holding took 249 wickets at an average of 23.68.

Colin Croft
One of the most underrated fast bowlers of his time, Croft was a perfect match for the other three members of the quartet that propelled West Indies to the top of world cricket. Roberts was the wise one, Holding the quiet destroyer who delivered some nasty yorkers, Garner the man who got the ball to jump off a fairly good length, and Croft, with his awkward action that so often got the ball to leave right-hand batsmen when it should have been coming in to them, moved the ball off the seam prodigiously. In 27 Test matches, he took 125 wickets at an average of 23.30.

Joel Garner
Standing at 6ft 8in, Garner was a batsman's nightmare. At the point of delivery, as Geoffrey Boycott once said, the ball seemed to be coming out of the sky, and it was almost impossible to pick its length. Because of that, batsmen the world over spent most of their time trying to survive rather than to score runs. In 58 Test matches, Garner took 259 wickets at the amazing average of 20.97.

Malcolm Marshall
Unlike the other great West Indies fast bowlers, Marshall was a little man. In fact, to look at, he seemed more a batsman or a slow bowler. But he was fast, moved the ball both ways, in and out, and possessed a nasty bouncer. In 81 Test matches, Marshall took 376 wickets at an average of 20.94.

Courtney Walsh
A gentle giant, Walsh was Mr Consistency. He generally bowled just short of a good length. He was dependable, was the "work horse" of the great West Indies team of his time, and astonishingly, in terms of wickets taken he seemed to have gotten better the older he got. In 132 Test matches, he took 519 wickets at an average of 24.44.

Curtly Ambrose
Standing at 6ft 7in, Ambrose was one of the tallest of the great West Indies fast bowlers, and it was only natural that he got the ball to bounce awkwardly from an almost perfect length. He dropped it on the same spot delivery after delivery and batsmen found it nearly impossible to play him, forget score against him, as was the case in Perth in the 1992-93 series, when he smashed Australia with seven wickets for one run in 32 deliveries. In 98 Test matches, Ambrose took 405 wickets at an average of 20.99.

Ian Bishop
If ever a bowler appeared destined for greatness, it was Bishop. Coming in off a lovely run-up, he had a beautiful side-on action, good pace, and got the ball to mostly leave the right-hander. However, after a promising start, injury cut him down on two occasions, and he was forced to change his action. Although he remained good enough to compete and deliver, he never achieved what he seemed destined to do. In 43 Test matches, Bishop took 161 wickets at an average of 24.27.

Ignore average players to build strong Test side, says Afridi:

Pakistan captain Shahid Afridi feels they need to ignore “average” cricketers to build a formidable Test side. The all-rounder said while Pakistan is on track in oneday and Twenty20 formats, it will take a mammoth effort from them to form a good Test team. “Our biggest challenge is to prepare a Test team that is capable of doing well in what I believe is by far the most difficult of all three formats,” Afridi was quoted as saying in The News on Wednesday.
“We haven’t done well in Test cricket in recent years because mostly we have tried to rely on average players.

Shahid Afridi to retire from Tests

Shahid Afridi made the decision that seemed inevitable from the day he took over as Test captain, by announcing his Test retirement immediately after leading his side to a 150-run loss against Australia at Lord's.

Afridi has been a reluctant Test player over the years and this Test was his first in four years. A poor personal performance, capped by a four-ball 2 on the last day - out slogging to deep midwicket - didn't help matters and the second Test against Australia at Headingley, starting on Wednesday, will now be his last. Afridi's participation at Headingley, however, will depend on whether he passes a fitness test for a side strain in the days leading up to the match.

Salman Butt, the vice-captain, is likely to take over the leadership for the England series though that is not set in stone until the PCB makes a final decision. Whoever does take over will be Pakistan's fifth Test captain since the start of 2009.

"With my temperament I can't play Test cricket," Afridi said. "It is better a youngster comes in my place, probably a genuine batsman or even a genuine bowler. I picked up a side injury during the Asia Cup and unless you are 100 percent fit you can't perform in Test cricket.

"I wasn't interested in playing Test cricket but the board asked me to go and take a look as they didn't have a choice. So I took up the responsibility. They asked me to take a chance and may be I would enjoy it. But I wasn't really enjoying Test cricket but I tried. I wasn't good enough. A captain should lead by example which I did not. And if I played the way I played in this match it is better to leave."

If Afridi's side injury rules him out of the second Test at Headingley his final shot in the five-day game will be the slog-sweep that picked out Mike Hussey and Afridi was honest enough to admit he just couldn't hold back. "You are right," he said. "I am coming back to Test cricket after four years and in the interim I'd played a lot of ODI and Twenty20 cricket so I came in with the same [attacking] temperament. I was in two minds. You can say I was not strong mentally."

Yawar Saeed, Pakistan's manager, confirmed Afridi's decision to Cricinfo, though he insisted he wouldn't call it a retirement. "Afridi had a side strain and felt that he shouldn't keep a specialist out of the side. Temperamentally he feels not comfortable with the format so Leeds will be his last Test," he said.

Saeed said that Butt is likely to take over, but that any decision would have to be made in consultation with the board. Ijaz Butt, chairman PCB, is in England currently. "Salman Butt was appointed vice-captain for the tour and he will take over unless the PCB meets and decides otherwise. But as per procedure, he will take over," Saeed said.

"Salman is the vice captain and he should ideally be the man," Afridi added. "The way he has shown the maturity he is good enough to carry forward the responsibility."

The development will bring into sharp focus the PCB's decision to appoint Afridi as Test captain in the first place. He had already retired from the format once before, in 2006, only to return, ironically, for the tour to England that summer. He played a couple of Tests before pulling himself out of the format again.

Since his appointment recently, his hesitancy towards the format has surfaced repeatedly. In an interview to The Wisden Cricketer before the series began, Afridi hinted he might not play Tests for long. "I'm confident I am fine fitness-wise," he said then. "But I came back to Tests because I am doing it for the team only. If I think I am fit to do it, I will continue playing Tests. Otherwise I will not burden the side."

In a more recent interview to Cricinfo, Afridi said, "If down the line I become aware that I am not a good captain, or not a successful one, and the team is unable to make any use of me as a captain, I will not chase it. If I don't have the ability then I will leave it on my own ... I did not ask anyone forcibly to give me the captaincy, nor will I forcibly captain the team. If I am good I will prove it through my performance. If I am not good I will say khuda hafeez [God be with you]."

Another new beginning for Pakistan - Butt takes over test captaincy

Oh Pakistan, what will you come up with next? After the tour of Australia, life bans were handed out and overturned before the team had even played its next Test, and now it has lost its new captain to retirement after one match. Admittedly, Shahid Afridi wasn't exactly in a Test-match state of mind, but it will be a huge challenge for Salman Butt to take over the reins for the first time as well as be Pakistan's most important batsman. Butt was described during that trip to Australia as "a little lazy runner" by the then leader Mohammad Yousuf, and we will soon find out whether he has the respect of the rest of his team-mates. His vice-captain is Kamran Akmal, who was dropped two Tests ago. Go figure.

For Australia things are considerably more stable. Since Pakistan last beat Australia in a Test, in November 1995, Australia have had four Test captains and Pakistan have had 12, soon to become 13. Still, Ricky Ponting is in charge of a side that had two debutants at Lord's and the team has handed out 17 baggy green caps since the start of 2008. By the standards of Australian cricket, that's Pakistan-like instability. However, things are coming together for Ponting six months out from another Ashes series and his men have won their last seven Tests.

There are some areas Australia will hope to improve at Headingley. In the first Test, Australia gathered 11 wickets via the bowling of their top six batsmen, thanks to Shane Watson and Marcus North. That means the strike bowlers have plenty of room to lift while some key batsmen, including Ponting himself, also struggled at Lord's.

I have this really, really churning feeling in my stomach that a big innings and a golden period is due for Ponting.
I mean, his career has definitely mirrored Sachin's in terms of success - in the sense that started slowly, then had a outstanding period, followed by a relative slump. But all through, except for that Indian tours, he never is in dumps for long. Within 3-4 tests, he scores big. So, I guess like Sachin, he will have a revival period(as Sachin has been having post 2007).

I mean the way it has been happening is that when Sachin during 2002-2003 was on top, he was the undisputed king, then a few successes for Ponting and relative failures for Sachin led vested interests to anoint Ponting as the best taking full advantage of Sachin's lean period. Today, the situation is reverse but given that everything that has happened to Sachin has happened to him at a broad level, I expect that Ponting has a revival period before he retires.

Long and short of it, in my books, Ponting is still the front runner for maximum centuries in Test Cricket and highest run aggregate in test cricket. And THAT IS NOT CHATTERJEE!!!

Ponting hoping to Win an Ashes Series in England in 2013 (http://www.cricinfo.com/pakistan-v-australia-2010/content/current/story/468897.html)

Whatever you say, one has to appreciate his confidence. I will not be surprised if he comes back in 2013 and wins an Ashes series in England. People are writing him off too early. He is just going through the "doubt in mid 30's" phase that every great batsman goes through. Obviously, in all such cases, a renaissance period follows where the batsman reasserts his greatness. I expect Ponting to go on until atleast 2013, which means he will retire with all the records in his name - top career aggregate of test runs, most test centuries. Ofcourse, a record as captain that will be unmatched, too. Especially if he manages to win the Ashes in England and remove the one blot in his captaincy record.
(Despite that statistical record as captain, one ofcourse will find it difficult to place him above Waugh, Taylor and Border in captaincy stakes)

[tscii:6069705a49]Ponting backs incumbents to find form again for India tour (http://www.smh.com.au/sport/cricket/ponting-backs-incumbents-to-find-form-again-for-india-tour-20100725-10qmf.html)

LEEDS: The prospect of changes to Australia's batting line-up in time for October's Test tour of India is remote, according to captain Ricky Ponting..

Only Simon Katich (46.75) and Michael Clarke (34.75), finished the two-Test series against Pakistan with a batting average above 30. The worst averages among the specialists were, ironically, for the only two Australian players to claim five-wicket hauls: Shane Watson (16) and Marcus North (nine).

The performance of Steve Smith at Headingley, scoring 77 from just 100 balls, fed speculation he could take over North's place in the team in India and also be a secondary spin option to Nathan Hauritz. But that possibility was discounted by Ponting.

''I don't think Smith will put pressure on North, no,'' the captain said. ''I thought the runs we got out of Smith … were pretty entertaining and very valuable as far as the game was concerned [but] I think you can look at all of our batsmen through this tour. We've faced some pretty challenging conditions at different times. Both innings at Lord's the ball got around a fair bit, certainly the first innings here [Headingley] were probably the most challenging conditions that any of us have batted in.

''We all analyse ourselves pretty closely and we all want to play well all the time but unfortunately that's not the way this game works. But if you're going to win Test matches you have to have five or six or seven of your guys playing well each game and we probably didn't have that in this particular Test match.''

Besides English county cricket, the only chance for Australian players to impress before the India tour will be at the Champions League in September. While Victorian Cameron White and South Australians Callum Ferguson and Michael Klinger are due to play in the tournament, Ponting dismissed the suggestion that strong Twenty20 form there could be enough to to secure a position on the tour of India. ''For those three guys … probably not, no,'' he said.

The India tour was initially scheduled to consist of seven 50-over matches, however, Cricket Australia agreed to the host's request to change that to two Tests and three one-dayers, in a bid to fortify India's No.1 ranking in Tests.

While those two Tests, in Mohali and Bangalore, are effectively a bonus for Australia in terms of preparation for the Ashes, Ponting lamented that pitch characteristics in India will be vastly different to those expected for the Ashes opener at the Gabba in late November.

''If you were trying to set down and map out your perfect preparation for an Ashes series or a home series it probably wouldn't be playing two Test matches in India,'' he said. ''But you don't live in an ideal world. We'll wait and see who we've got that's fit and ready to go for that tour and pick a squad of players we think can win a Test series over there, and then worry about the start of the Ashes after that.''

Ponting agreed his interest in tinkering with the bowling line-up could provide, injuries permitting, a prompt recall to the national squad for Peter Siddle and Ryan Harris.

''The beauty about our squad at the moment is the depth we've got, particularly in the fast bowling side of things. Siddle is on his way back and is in very good physical shape, Ryan has had knee surgery and is probably a little bit behind at the moment,'' he said.

Glad that Zulgarnain's batting should be good enough to keep Karmam out of the remaining two Tests and have him carry drinks. However, as Plum rightly pointed out during Fakistan's visit Down Under last summer, Karmam can still make the cut in their fragile batting lineup stritly as a batsman.

Pataudi & Ganguly make very good captains (especially the former) but I wouldn't include them in this league.

Watched Pakistan's second innings for a while yesterday, Swann for me is the best off-spinner around  He had all the batsman in trouble, if only Prior was slightly better keeper, I'm sure Swann would have wrapped up things earlier.

Was also amazed to see Umar Akmal's approach against Swann, first ball he faced he was down the track and Prior missed a chance :irked:

cricinfo seems to indicate a 3 member middle order.
Sachin - place fixed. In reality, competition is only for two middle order slots.
I would say Dravid also place fixed so basically, we just have one slot to fight over. I think cricinfo is going for Kapil Dev at #6 which will be a blunder I think. So, lets go for 4 middle order slots with Sachin and Dravid fixed at #4 and #3.

Lots of options but obviously, Viswanath, Laxman, Ganguly, Vengsarkar stand out. Apart from other things, Sehwag apart, they occupy the next 4 slots to Sachin, Dravid and Sunny in the all time aggregate list for India.

Amarnath had too brief and too unsustained spell of successes despite the bravery against pace;

Pataudi is more of "if only he wasnt handicapped, he might have been Bradman". Thanks. Maybe, but that is speculation. Hazare and earlier ones, I dont know much about;

Azhar - match fixing apart, his away record, which I got to know recently , is really poor except for a couple of innings here and there in Australia and South Africa. Check it out. You'll probably realise that his reputation far precedes his record - just as I did, for even I had an illusion that he had a great record away until I saw it!

Lax - has proved himself in a wide variety of conditions and situations and for that reason, I will put him above his idol Azhar.

Gangs - purely as a batsman, he'll probably not make it. His left-handedness adds variety, though

Vengsarkar - for a batsman with such reputation, his away record reads patchy and he seems stronger on paper than on actual record

Vishy - my choice, for my money. Havent seen him much but romantic tales of 70's and 80's writers on the beauty of his batting is what I grew up on so tough to shed that legacy in my mind.

Once you choose Vishy, I am in a dilemma whether to go for Lax or Amarnath/Ganguly - I am discounting Vengsarkar for Lax has done far more in a wider range of conditions. Both Amarnath and Ganguly add medium pace(rather, "slow fast", as in "Amarnath is a slow fast bowler") options. Lax is again a stylist in Vishy mould. Despite all that, I am inclined to go with Lax. Sehwag, Sachin should give us the extra bowling options. Besides, an all time best XI should be able to get 4 good bowlers, even if the team concerned is India!

Sehwag, Gavaskar, Rahul Dravid, Sachin, Vishy, Laxman, Kapil, Dhoni/Kirmani - that's a pretty handy #8. If Dhoni is in, Kapil goes to #8 and if Kirmani is in, Kapil goes to #7.

Kumble selects himself as a bowler. With two remaining slots, Bedi/Prasanna and Srinath/Zaheer take the remaining slot. So, roughly,
Sehwag, Gavaskar, Rahul Dravid, Sachin, Vishy, Laxman, Kapil, Dhoni/Kirmani, Kumble, Zaheer, Prasanna.

You can replace Kumble with Bedi/Chandra, too, and there wont be much difference.

Yeah, I guess I'll take Kamran as a batsman over Umar Amin, Shoaib Malik etc. Yousuf is a great batsman, but his influence on the team is always questionable - like Malik, he is a destabilizer. I think Pak has to take a decision and move away from the fratricide that Yousuf, Younis, Malik, Afridi are indulging in. In that sense I am ok with Amin, Azhar Ali etc. but there also, Kamran can play as a batsman at #5.

Besides this, I have a great opinion of Yasir Hameed, a promising opener a few moons ago but disappeared into the great black hole that is Pakistani Cricket. Good to see him back in the squad, and hope he makes it to the team.

Plum, the list is batting heavy (like all Indian teams). I have no doubt this team will do very well in sub-continental conditions. Batsmen pile up the runs, Zaheer/Kapil do initial damage and Kumble/Prasanna to finish it off. But what about outside the subcontinent? Since we have such a strong batting line-up, shouldn't we think of picking an extra bowler (pace) so that we can take wickets? IMO Kapil may not be an out and out strike bowler in that respect (contentious) and we would definitely need another fast bowler apart from Zaheer.

The purpose of selecting an all-rounder is to allow us to play the extra batsman or bowler. If the team has quality batsmen then we pick an extra bowler and vice versa. Looking at the list, I would say the bowling is relatively weak (compared to other countries' best XIs). So if Kapil is playing he should be playing No. 6 and Dhoni/Kirmani at No. 7. Then we can pick 4 bowlers (2 fast, 2 spin) so that the team can cope with all the different pitches and challenges and take 20 wickets.

Flintoff did the all-rounder's role beautifully in Ashes 2005 and England played 4 bowlers + Flintoff so they could attack, attack and attack some more. Personally I think that should be the sort of role to be given to Kapil.

puLi, you have a point. I guess we should select a 16 and say, the 11 depends on the conditions.

Openers - Sehwag, Gavaskar, Gambhir/Sidhu(Reserve Opener)
Middle Order - Sachin, Dravid, Vishy, Lax
Wk - Kirmani, Dhoni
Spinners- Bedi, Kumble, Prasanna, Chandra/another medium pacer
Medium Pace - Kapil, Zaheer, Srinath, Another Medium pacer/Chandra

An alternative squad is to eliminate the reserve opener by selecting a keeper who can open. This gives an extra bowling option in the squad:
Openers - Sehwag, Gavaskar
Middle Order - Sachin, Dravid, Vishy, Lax
Wk - Kirmani, Engineer
Spinners- Bedi, Kumble, Prasanna, Chandra
Medium Pace - Kapil, Zaheer, Srinath, Another Medium pacer

:) Selecting 16 is the easier option, Plum. But Cricinfo selects 11, so I will give a shot at 11.

Sehwag, Gavaskar, Dravid, Sachin, Laxman (Vishy terribly unlucky to miss out), Kapil, Kirmani, Kumble, Bedi, Zaheer, Srinath.

Kirmani - WK's first job is to keep wickets. Agreed that the runs he scores can change a game (a la Gilchrist), but if his keeping is not upto scratch then the team is in trouble. Another point is that Dhoni is still relatively new to Test cricket. So maybe after he plays a lot more matches and scores a heap of runs then he can make a strong case for selection.

Bedi - This was close one as he had to contend with Prasanna and Chandra. Chandra got eliminated on the sole reason that Kumble is an automatic selection (they are very similar bowlers and we need someone who can actually spin the ball). Compared to Prasanna, Bedi has the numbers (Test and First class wickets and average).

Zaheer - Reflects the bare cupboard in the fast bowling department. Couldn't think of anybody else.

Vishy - I have read so much about him being a true artist and the joy he brings to spectators. His average is a bit lower than Laxman since he played at the age of mighty bowling attacks. But Laxman has also made runs against some very good bowling attacks and is very calm under pressure. And since we can select only 3, Vishy misses out.

England's Stuart Broad fined for throwing incident

Broad could be hit with a ban if he transgresses again
Stuart Broad has been fined 50% of his match fee for throwing the ball at Pakistan batsman Zulqarnain Haider during the second Test at Edgbaston.

England seamer Broad hit Haider on the shoulder as England struggled for wickets during the third day.

Haider had earlier survived a concerted caught-behind appeal by Broad and went on to hit 88 in Pakistan's 291-9.

The 24-year-old Broad had pleaded guilty to a charge of "throwing the ball inappropriately".

Broad's guilty plea meant there was no need for Sri Lankan match referee Ranjan Madugalle to hold a full hearing after stumps on Sunday.

"The actions of Stuart Broad were unacceptable," Madugalle said in an International Cricket Council statement issued on Monday.

606: DEBATE
Well done Pakistan. They might still lose but they haven't lost easily. They have outscored England and proven that they can get 250 plus

Solo443
"I understand the frustrations of a bowler in the heat of the moment but as an international sportsman one needs to control these emotions whatever may be the situation and always respect the opponent.

"Stuart, by pleading guilty, realised his mistake and I'm sure he will not repeat the same again."

England looked on course to wrap up an innings victory before tea when Pakistan lost their sixth wicket soon after lunch, but Haider's partnerships with Mohammad Amir and Saeed Ajmal gave them a surprise lead of 112 going into day four.

After his throw at Haider, Broad quickly held up his hand in a gesture of apology, but the Pakistan camp did not feel he had done enough.

Pakistan skipper Salman Butt stated: "Cricket is a gentleman's game but I think England got frustrated. The throw was just one thing. There were plenty of words as well, that everyone could see, and people kicking the bowling marks.

"It's just frustration when you have been bowling too long. It's not good to see people throwing balls intentionally at others and not even apologising properly."

England's Graeme Swann, who saw the gloss knocked off his Test-best 6-60 by Haider's runs and Broad's indiscipline, insisted there was "no malice" in the actions of his Nottinghamshire team-mate.

Swann said: "Broady apologised straight away. It was just a sign of the frustrations that were going on."

If Broad transgresses in such a way again, he could be slapped with a one-Test ban.
