McGrath takes charge of MRF Pace Foundation

Glenn McGrath has been appointed director of the MRF Pace Foundation in Chennai, replacing Dennis Lillee, who has held the post since its inception in 1987. McGrath, currently in India, has called it a "great honour."

"I know it won't be possible to replace someone like Dennis Lillee," McGrath said. "His legacy will be hard to live up to, but I will try my best in my role as the director at the foundation.

"The academy's contribution to world cricket is immense. I have trained there under Lillee and have experienced the facilities on offer."

The foundation has played a role in shaping the careers of several of the world's best fast bowlers, including Brett Lee and Zaheer Khan. Lillee, who spent 25 years with the organisation, hoped the foundation would continue its good work under McGrath's leadership.

"McGrath is the perfect choice to carry the vision of the Foundation forward," Lillee said. "I am happy for him and wish him all the best in his new role. I am certain that the MRF Pace Foundation will produce many more international fast bowlers under his guidance."

Lillee expressed satisfaction with the results of his association with the foundation and said that the decision to leave was not easy. "It has been a long journey. We had to begin from scratch, building facilities and slowly developing into a world-class academy. Our efforts and hard work have paid off and it pleases me to see bowlers trained at the foundation leading the Indian attack."

The Australian tour of India in 2000-01 - before the Australians left home Steve Waugh said, "This is the last frontier, this is the one we need to conquer." He must have thought that he was well on the way to conquering India.

They won the first Test match, in Mumbai, convincingly. Second Test match, in Kolkata, Australia enforced the follow-on, 270 odd ahead. So Steve Waugh must have almost been able to feel that Border-Gavaskar Trophy in his hands.

The smart move that India made in that match… I always thought that VVS Laxman, to me, is the perfect No. 3. He is a good player of fast bowling, he has got that ability to see off the challenge if an early wicket falls but he can dictate terms, and he is also such a good player of spin bowling.

He had been batting down the order. I think No. 6 in that series up to that point. He was not out in the first innings [he was the last man out]. When everybody else fell around him, he was well and truly on top, but he just didn't get any support in the first innings. I don't know who made the move, but it was a very smart move - they bumped him up to No. 3 in the second innings.

He came in, and as I say, India was in dire straits. For the circumstances in the match, I don't think I have ever seen a better innings played. I mean, you are 274 behind - that is a hell of a deficit to face. He erased the deficit on his own; he got 281.

The thing about that innings that will always stick in my mind is the way he came down the pitch to Shane Warne. I mean, here is the best legspinner in the world at the time, spinning the ball a lot… and to me, the toughest shot, even on a good pitch, the toughest shot to play is an on-drive to a legspinner. You think about it: the ball is spinning that way and you are trying to drive the ball [the other] way. You've got to be absolutely precise with the way you play that shot. And here was Laxman, coming down three paces, probably three metres out the crease, getting to the ball and then just driving it wide of mid-on, off Shane Warne. I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw it. It was a magnificent innings.

I remember talking to Shane Warne at the end of the series, and I said to him, "Mate, how do you think you bowled?" And he said, "Well, actually I didn't think that I bowled that badly." And I said, "You didn't, you just came up against the player who… I think that's the best playing of spin bowling that I have seen."

When you've got a player who can come out three metres, and then you go a little bit higher, and a little bit shorter with the next one trying to strand him, and the guy goes back on his stumps and pulls you through midwicket for four, that's not bad bowling, that's just damn good batting, excellent use of the feet.

You are never ever going to see a better example of good footwork than VVS Laxman when he got his 281 at Kolkata. It was magnificent.

There is a marked preference among the people who are interested in cricket on my twitter time line for clearly stated laws. There is an allergy towards any view which examines the account a player gives of himself.

All modes of dismissal are not created equal in cricket. It is a simple game, but nevertheless a very human game. The mechanical clarity of unambiguous rules is only a part of game, not all of it.

If you think that there is the written law, and thats all there is to it - that there is no right, no wrong, and no account of oneself to be given by a sportsman beyond the strict letter of the law, then you and I watch a different game. The game you watch is a boring, humorless one in which everyone must behave the same way - in which the optimal action for each player is measurable and any player who does not perform to this standard is a sub-standard fool.

Cricket is far richer than that. It is a game which requires judgment to be exercised by its players and its adjudicators - judgments not merely about what is to ones maximal advantage, but judgments about what is right by one's opponents and by the game.

It is healthy for there to be discomfort with decisions made on the field. Regrets and reflection are signs of maturity and decency.

Brian Lara, Enid Bakewell to be inducted into ICC Cricket Hall of Fame

The International Cricket Council today announced that Brian Lara and Enid Bakewell will be inducted into the ICC Cricket Hall of Fame tomorrow evening at the LG ICC Awards 2012.

West Indies’ Lara becomes the 67th male member of the Hall of Fame, while England’s Bakewell becomes the third woman to be inducted.

Lara and Bakewell will attend the LG ICC Awards tomorrow evening at the Waters Edge in Colombo.

Two further inductees will be announced later in the year.

The duo of Bakewell and Lara attended a special Hall of Fame cocktail reception on Friday evening to celebrate their inductions. The reception was attended by a variety of Lara’s former team-mates as well as the current West Indies squad.

Also attending the reception were members of the Ireland squad, along with their coach and Lara’s former team-mate Phil Simmons, as well as bowling coach Craig McDermott.

Brian Lara was one of the West Indies most prolific batsmen having represented the country for 131 Tests and 299 ODIs in a career that spanned 17 years. He amassed some 11,953 runs at an average of 52.88.

He scored 34 Test centuries and 48 half-centuries while his best performance with the bat featured against England in Antigua in 2004 when he scored 400 not out and to this day that total still remains the highest by any Test batsmen in an individual innings.

In the 299 ODIs that Lara played he scored 10,405 runs at an average of 40.48 that included 19 centuries and 63 half-centuries and in 1994, when captaining the West Indies, he led the team to victory in the ICC Champions Trophy in England.

Lara’s First Class career began in 1987 and when it ended in 2008 he had scored 22,156 runs with his highest score coming in the English County Championship playing for Warwickshire against Durham when he hit an unbeaten 501 in 1994.

Lara said of the induction: “I think it’s a very humbling experience for me. First of all, to be considered and then to be selected is a great moment. To be named alongside some of the great cricketers not just from West Indies but from all around the world like Sir Garfield Sobers, the Three Ws, Sir Vivian Richards is a very special feeling.”

“I had quite a few special moments in my career. I think our 2-1 series win in Australia in 1993 under Richie Richardson was very special. Then obviously winning the ICC Champions Trophy in 2004 under my leadership was also a very special occasion,’’ added Lara.

Joining Lara in the Hall of Fame is one of England’s all time cricketing legends from the female game, Enid Bakewell.

Born in Nottinghamshire in 1940, Bakewell played the majority of her cricket for the East Midlands, Nottinghamshire Women and of course England Women.

One of England’s best all-rounders she made her Test debut in 1968 against Australia in Adelaide where she scored a century on debut while her ODI debut came in 1973 in Hove, Sussex. She scored 1,078 Test runs at an average of 59.88 while she claimed 50 Test wickets with her useful left-arm spin at an average of just 16.13.

In 1979, playing the West Indies, Bakewell became the first English player, male or female to score a century and take 10 wickets in a Test, which was also her last appearance for England. Only fellow Hall of Famers Ian Botham, Alan Davidson and Imran Khan have achieved the feat in the men’s game while alongside Bakewell, Australia’s Betty Wilson also holds the accolade.

A delighted Bakewell said: “I do feel very honoured. To be named after, Rachael Heyhoe Flint is a huge moment for me. Rachael was a huge inspiration for me. My induction into this elite panel is also a big statement for women’s cricket.”

Yeah having been sucked into Aussie and Ponting bashing for so long, yet it felt very sad when reading the news about Ponting's retirement @ cricinfo. Also read Clarke was in tears during the press conference. Tells a lot about the relationship both share. Ricky was almost like a big brother to Clarke, I suppose, with Clarke making his debut at such an young age.

Ponting with a French beard @1996 world cup is my earliest memory of his and his 156 on the final day of the 3rd Ashes test in 2005 is his best knock, IMO.

He knew he'd made the right decision to retire. In the WACA gym on Thursday, Ponting was asked how tough it was knowing he would not be part of next year's Ashes tour. Not at all, he replied, because he had made up his mind that he was not good enough to get there. A spectacular, match-winning hundred in Perth might have forced a rethink. Few people would have complained.

As it was, Ponting farewelled Test cricket with a brief innings at the WACA, the ground that launched his Test career 17 years ago. It was an emotional 40-minute stay that started with a guard of honour (http://www.espncricinfo.com/australia-v-south-africa-2012/content/image/594774.html) from the South African players and finished with a series ofhandshakes (http://www.espncricinfo.com/australia-v-south-africa-2012/content/image/594803.html), the last of which came from the man who had caught him, one of Ponting's few remaining contemporaries from the early stages of his international career, Jacques Kallis.

Then came the moment that will live on forever in the memories of the 7000-strong crowd. As he approached the boundary, Ponting turned around for one last look at Test cricket from the middle. In his right hand he raised his Kookaburra bat, in his left he held up his helmet. The South Africans continued to clap; the standing ovation from the spectators grew louder. Seventeen years of international cricket had come to an end.

But not without a couple of glimpses of vintage Ponting. He began his innings with a nimble jump across his stumps to leave a ball from Morne Morkel and in Morkel's next over got off the mark with a trademark Ricky Ponting pull (http://www.espncricinfo.com/australia-v-south-africa-2012/content/image/594780.html), forward of square for four. A crisp on-drive provided the rest of Ponting's runs, a boundary off Dale Steyn that beat Morkel at mid-on. Steyn asked some serious questions of Ponting and the batsman was up to every challenge.

With less than five minutes until lunch, Ponting sensed the chance to go to the break with some momentum. He rocked back to Robin Peterson and tried to crunch the ball through the off side. Ponting stood and stared for a moment, processing what had just happened. His Test career was over.

There was some modest celebration from the South Africans, but they appreciated the historical significance. As Ponting walked off, Graeme Smith ran to Ponting to shake his hand, as he had during the earlier guard of honour. Smith's team-mates flocked from all parts to follow his lead. It was fitting that Kallis, in the twilight of a grand career like Ponting, was last.

As Ponting walked off the WACA, his wife Rianna and two daughters, and his parents Graeme and Lorraine, watched on from the stands. He left the field with 13,378 Test runs to his name at an average of 51.85. In his final Test series, he scored 0, 4, 16, 4 and 8. He was content that he had made the right call.

Though never a showman, Ponting has entertained with his skill and his final raise of the bat was a poignant curtain call. It was about Ponting acknowledging what the game had given to him for the past 17 years. It was also about the game giving Ponting, unquestionably one of the modern greats, his due. As he walked off, the WACA scoreboard said it all. Two words, in huge letters, were all that were required. Tony Greig - one of the entertaining commentators ever, passes away due to lung cancer

Former England skipper and Channel Nine commentator, Tony Greig, has died of lung cancer at the age of 66, according to a statement released by the Nine network. Speaking to the Sydney Morning Herald, David Faktor, St. Vincent hospital spokesman, said, "He was rushed to St. Vincent hospital after he had suffered a heart attack. The staff at the emergency department worked on him but we could not save him."

Mr. Greig became aware of the problem during the ODI series between Pakistan and Australia in September 2012. Mr. Greig was earlier diagnosed with Bronchitis in May but the condition lingered on.

During the T20 WC 2012 World Cup in Sri Lanka in October, Greig had tests that revealed a small lesion at the bottom of his right lung. On returning to Australia, he had fluid removed from the right lung and in subsequent tests, he was diagnosed with lung cancer. During the recent Australia versus South Africa Test in Brisbane, Mr. Greig spoke candidly about the disease saying that, "It is not good. The truth is that I have got lung cancer and it's now a case of what they can do".

Tony Greig was born in Queenstown, South Africa in 1946. He trialled out for Sussex in 1965 as a teenager and within a period of seven years, he made his Test debut for England in 1972 against Australia in Manchester. He got off to a wonderful start by scoring fifties in both innings and picked up five wickets in the match as England won the match by 89 runs.

One of his greatest moments was during the 1976-77 tour to India. His captaincy and his all-round skills played a major part in England winning the five Test series 3-1. He scored a total of 342 runs in that series with an average of 42.7 and also picked up 10 wickets.

The Channel Nine statement added that Tony Greig is synonymous with Australian cricket. "From his playing days as the England skipper which we loved to hate, to his senior role in the revolution of World Series Cricket, his infamous car keys in the pitch report and more than three wonderful decades of colourful and expert commentary."

He went on to play 58 Tests for England, and led them in 14. His five year stint with England ended when he joined the Kerry Packer run World Series Cricket and he was one of the key players. Greig scored 3599 runs at an average of 40 and took 141 wickets at 32 apiece. His first-class career spanned for 11 years and he played 350 matches, scoring 16,660 runs and picking up 856 wickets. In 190 domestic one-day games, he scored 3899 runs and snapped up 244 wickets.

Kirsten quits SA job effective August


Gary Kirsten has decided not to renew his contract as South Africa coach, which ends in August, to be able to spend more time with his family. The Champions Trophy in England in June will be his last assignment with the South Africa side, which he led to to the top of the Test rankings.

Kirsten was appointed in August 2011 for a two-year period, with the option to renew it for a further two years. His contract required him to inform CSA by April 30 this year whether he wished to exercise that option.

"Gary has a young family and it is understandable that he wishes to spend more time at home," Chris Nenzani, the CSA president and chairman, said. "I would like to thank him for his tremendous contribution to the wellbeing of the Proteas over the past two years. It is obvious to all of us, whether we have been close to the Proteas or simply fans watching from the stands, the standard of excellence that he has brought to our national team and it will be wonderful if he can complete his tenure by bringing home the ICC Champions Trophy next month.

"With the team due to tour Sri Lanka in July and August and Pakistan in November and important home series coming up against India and Australia next season it is important that we move quickly to identify his successor."


Nenzani said CSA would try to utilise Kirsten's experience in some other capacity. "Gary certainly leaves the Proteas in good health and, although we are disappointed to lose him as head coach, he has put the foundations in place to carry us forward. We will certainly endeavour to retain his services in some capacity as his experience as player, coach and mentor is not something we want to lose in its entirety."


"I would like to thank Cricket South Africa for the confidence they showed in entrusting me with the fortunes of the national team," Kirsten said. "It has been a huge privilege to represent my country as player and coach and to have been given the responsibility of growing the team.

"I would particularly like to thank Cricket South Africa for allowing me the flexibility to combine my coaching job with my family life during my tenure.

"There have been many highlights over the past two years which have been well documented and I have every confidence that the Proteas will continue to go from strength to strength."

South Africa's bowling coach Allan Donald hoped Kirsten's tenure would end with a Champions Trophy title. "I spoke to Gary personally a couple of days ago and I respect his decision 100%," he told ESPNcricinfo. "At the moment we are very focused on the Champions Trophy and I'm sure that this team needs no motivation to go and win this tournament for Gary. As far as I'm concerned we just got to let this whole thing take its course and for me there is no decision to be made about my future with the Proteas."

Mark Boucher, the former South Africa wicketkeeper, tweeted: "Protea crickets loss today with Garys decision,but a life lesson in itself..always put family first! take a bow Gaz! Thanks for all ur work!"

And if they played into the day adding only about 50 runs, it was eminently possible for NZ to claw their way back into the match.
But England managed to fold - which worked out for the best.
The only surprise was the margin - there was no doubt about the result, particularly once Taylor was gone.

I feel for the Indian fast bowlers: Dale Steyn

Dale Steyn feels always looking up to spinners for wickets is not the right way to go about encouraging the crop of pacers in India.

“If you’re always going to look at the spinners to do the job for you, what’s the point of even having a fast bowler?” asked Steyn.

Aware of India’s “rich tradition” with spinners, Steyn gave an example from the recent India-Australia Test series to make his point.

“I watched the recent Test series between India and Australia and at one stage Ishant (Sharma) bowled his first over of the match with the second new ball! There’s not a lot of confidence your captain is giving you as a fast bowler when he gives you the ball only after 80 overs.

“I say this with due respect to M.S. Dhoni because they went on to win the Test series 4-0. But for a bowler like Ishant, it doesn’t say a lot to him. I’m sure he buys into the team’s plans and priorities and so he’s fine with it.

“But when questions are raised about Indian fast bowlers — which I think will always be raised — I think that’s your answer right there,” the South African was quoted as saying by the IPL website. :clap:

I don't understand why they didn't enforce follow-on. (Botham, Atherton, Hussain - all were unified in befuddlement). They had bowled only about 40 overs and Finn/Swann were raring to go. NZ's only spinner is Williamson - not to be feared on the last day at all. Very safe and unbecoming of a team that should fight back to the top spot.

That said, Cook in flow - a joy. Yes, I said joy. Just to be clear you heard it, joy.
The drives he laid into, playing within, leaving and punishing looseners. Precisely what makes English cricket enjoyable.

Compton may be dropped :-| He was unnecessarily defensive.
Vaganam wants Root to open instead, so KP can be back in the middle. I say make KP often if he wants to be in. Or Bell. Why fiddle with Root, who is doing well where he is.

What's come over Trott? He has gone overboard with his defensiveness. He played relatively freely in NZ. Now he is back to over-respecting the bowlers - like he did when he was in India.

England shouldn't bat much longer than lunch. Cook has unnecessarily put himself in a spot where he has to make a declaration that may backfire with too much sun and Ross Taylor, or be defensive and declare too late (like post tea).
