Sarees are the most graceful and ideal garment for Tamil & Indian women

Though it is "each individual's liking of how they dress", still can anyone deny the fact the "grace and the grandeur" of Tamil Girls and Women are, when they are dressed in Paavaadai, Thaavani and Selai (Sarees) according to their age, with Poo, Pottu, long Koonthal, Thodu, Gimikki, Maalai, Kaappu and "very neatly groomed" - and not when they are in "Denim Long Trousers and Tee Shirts, or Short Denim Trousers and sleeveless or strap type Short Blouses - with short bobbed hairs or cut and chopped hairs", with no pottu and basic jewellery.

It is very pathetic to see how Tamil Nadu which has inherited rich Dress Traditions, and developed the great art of knitting beautiful Sarees, Thaavanis, Paavaadais, Pattukarai Vestis, and Mel-Angi materials, now throwing away their rich traditions and valuing the "Hippy Culture" of the West.

"Sarees are the most graceful and glamourous garment of the Tamil & Indian women" that surpasses the current dress-forms of the West in modesty & richness, and enhances the "feminine beauty" of every women many-folds retaining their own Identity in multi-cultural societies"

I know of many people who quite agree with my opinon posted above, but reluctant to express same openly for fear of being rediculed - partly (not fully) by the growing younger generation, and partly by the older generation (not fully) - “who are craving for western ways of life to identify themselves as part of the so called modernisation and globalisation”.

Also it is true today's ways of life have changed the pattern of living of many Tamils, as they are spread worldwide out from their traditional homelands, and with both men and women getting themselves educationally qualified, and moving into different working environments in multi-cultural societies, sometimes it neccessiates many of them (not all) to adopt a dress-code most suited to those “working environments” (not social environments).

It is for this reason and to accommodate such situations by streamlining "Idealism" with "Reality" - wherever possible "Tamils should appreciate and wear their traditional dresses the "Paavadai, Thaavani, Sarees, Irrataikkarai Vesti, MelAngi & Salwai", dressed in a neat and elegant way "at least" at all Tamil - Social, Religious, Cultural and Public functions, and at Tamil - Hindu Weddings, Tamil - Hindu Funeral Ceremonies and worship at Hindu Temples, rather than wearing the Western Dresses".

Further to all those who “hate” Tamil Traditional Dresses - which is a very importent component of our Tamil Culture to retain our identity against the waves of globalisation, I wish to advice though they dislike Tamil Dress Forms such as Sarees, Vestis and Melangis, the same are being promoted in many foreign countries by way of Indian Fashion Shows and “Sarees & Vestis” - Sales Exhibitions by interested Organisations and Manufacturers of Tamil Nadu and elsewhere.

I myself know of Indian Costumes Fashion Shows, Indian Sarees Fashion Shows held in many foreign countries “patronised by many elite from the Tamil & Indian Society”, with Indian Models walking on the stage draped in lovely Indian Sarees and traditional Male Dress Forms including Pattu - Irrataikkarai Vestis & Salwais exhibiting their "grace and granduer" to the audience.

Trust the forgoing will encourage re-thinking to many, on this subject.

Costumes like Saree, pAvadai-thaavani add a special charm. Sad that the traditional costumes are being ignored by many girls/women

Dear NOV - I thank you for you good efforts in making my thread look impressive.

At the very first you had three Pictures posted of which the first two were very nice but now not seen. Among the ones remaining first two and the last is O.K.

Have you got any photos showing Pavaadai, Thaavani, Sarees worn by young, and Sarees worn by elderly ladies all of "Tamil Nadu Style" - especially like what you see in the Pothys, Saravanas, Kumaran's advertisements with some "jewellery Pottu and Koonthal with Flowers". Also if your have any pictures of the young Boys and elderly men wearing Mel Angi & and Pattu Vesti and Salwai, to impresss how Indian dresses are more gracious looking than Western hippy type dresses to all.

Thanking you very much again for your very kind co-operation.

Important Note:
"In this case" it cannot be added in the main text as it is too long and will not impressive, but should be added as the first Reply to Text - immediately after my text. Otherwise when Readers open the Thread and if it has - say five pages of replies from all, then it will not appear on opening the website and may Readers may not be aware of these pictures and bother to go to the 5th page.

Thanking you again Mikka Anbudan

Dear NOV,

Thanks very much - Very nice Photos portraying the beauty of the Indian Sarees and the traditional Indian Dress Culture which surpasses - the current Dressforms of the Hippy Culture of the West in modesty and richness, and enhances the beauty of every women tenfolds than what they are when in the Western dress.

The Male Dress form one with yellow Sarikai border you have posted looks very very good. If you have some more nicer Photos with Mel Anghi Pattu Vesti & Shawl with yellow sarukai border or in green & red Sarikai border "neatly and smartly dressed" and similer dressed boys to be posted it will be more impressive to portray & drive our views on the Tamil Dress Forms.

Any how whatever Photos on Female Dress Forms especiaaly Sarees you have included and Male Dress Form with yellow Sarikai Vesti are very very impressive- Thanks very much again for same.

In Chennai I have seen wonderful Posters of Pavaadai Dress worn by small girls, and Thavani Dress worn by young girls, and men with the Mel Anghi Pattu Veshti & Shawls looking very smart and impressive.

Thanks again

What do you mean by ideal?...ideally it makes the wearer look attractive? Or it is ideal because "one size fits all"? Or?

Even though I myself do not like salwar kameez I can see that it is very easy to wear and work in.

Even though I myself do not like salwar kameez I can see that it is very easy to wear and work in.I guess its all about getting used to it. I have seem yuppies like Scorpio wearing sarees and working comfortably.

Closer home there is a Miss Manners (who teaches social etiquette) who wears the saree elegantly. she only dresses in saree for work - Mrs Ambigaipakan.

Sarees are definitely not comfortable. Therefore not ideal and efficient. They look really pretty not goina lie but it's not for everyone. Salwars are a lot better. I don't know about thavanis but since they're similar to Sarees I'm going to assume they're uncomfortable too! :|

''Western Hippie world''... have you checked out the hippie world lately... they are very into saries and veshties.. if they took care of their hair properly they would look authentic tamil... i guess they have not caught up to the coconut oil trick.

Podavai at best drowns a woman in fabric and at worst, most especially silk saris, makes her look like a candy in a shiny crinkly wrapper. I'm not sure how it counts as ideal: wrapped garments require adjustment, they are less stable, constricting the legs decreases mobility (which is why women hike their saris and men madichufy veshtis). No pottu and no jewellery focuses attention on the woman's own face, far more appealing, not to mention what it implies about the woman's personality.

I don't care for salwar-kameez either -- kameez is waistless and ends in an odd place, it makes almost every woman look dumpier than she would be in a better cut silhouette.

Women applicants to work in factories handling machinery - those wearing sarees and with long hair OUT.
Going to market - sarees no pocket. Can lose dollar notes and coins and cry. Handbags can be snatched by thieves. Can forget and leave handbags in wash rooms.

Molester chase - cannot run.

driving - saree uncomfortable. Beware : saree may cause accidents,

taking buses - saree - tough.

Going to temple / wedding - if a male person accompanies and drives, OK. can wear Saree.

Washing/drying/ironing all becoming more expensive.

OK, Good for Indian occasions. Saree shops still making money.

Malay and Chinese girls buy saree material to stitch some kinds of dresses for themselves,

Why is this saree discussion restricted to Tamil women?

I don't know about that one. I had a saree wearing woman drive me to temple on many occasions and nothing happened. As for being uncomfortable, I never thought about that one.

The madam who drives you to temple must be an extraordinarily skillful driver.

A variety of factors come into play in Road Traffic collision cases. Visibility, weather, volume of traffic on the road, speed of the vehicle involved and other vehicles, road conditions, mechanical defects of vehicles involved etc etc. If an uncomfortable apparel is worn by the driver, the likelihood of not being able to have proper control in the event of an emergency requiring maneuver of vehicle is higher. Not every person driving a vehicle with uncomfortable wear meets with an accident. Many escape.......There have been occasions when the careless or incompetent driver is saved by the more careful or skillful one on the road.

One evening, I was driving a car descending a slope. The road I was on meets another major road. My brakes failed. My car ended up at the center of the road intersection. I saw a container lorry approaching the intersection from the major road. I thought sure collision and that was the end of me. But the competent and careful driver stopped about 3 metres from my car.........

So we say : the likelihood of ...... is higher.

On the other hand, what is uncomfortable for one may be perfectly OK for another. Most people feel....saree uncomfortable. But again this is not from any survey .

That is true. Now that I think of it, some sarees do look pretty uncomfortable. Especially when they start to come loose.

Sari [Saaree] makes a comeback

"The sari is back on the campus of India's premier management school. Women students at the Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad (IIM-A) may go the whole nine yards during placement interviews this year. The Indian ethnic wear has been recognised as a formal wear for business interviews held on the campus after a long hiatus, thanks to the efforts of the institute's first woman cultural representative in 52 years — Priyanshi Mathur."
