"Tonight you're all gonna be part of a social experiment. Through the magic of diesel fuel and ammonium nitrate, I'm ready right now to blow you all sky high. Anyone attempts to get off their boat, you all die. Each of you has a remote... to blow up the other boat. At midnight, I blow you all up. If, however, one of you presses the button, I'll let that boat live. So, who's it going to be: Harvey Dent's most wanted scumbag collection, or the sweet and innocent civilians? You choose... oh, and you might want to decide quickly, because the people on the other boat might not be so noble. "

Batman: Then why do you want to kill me?
The Joker: [giggling] I don't, I don't want to kill you! What would I do without you? Go back to ripping off mob dealers? No, no, NO! No. You... you... complete me.
Batman: You're garbage who kills for money.
The Joker: Don't talk like one of them. You're not! Even if you'd like to be. To them, you're just a freak, like me! They need you right now, but when they don't, they'll cast you out, like a leper! You see, their morals, their code, it's a bad joke. Dropped at the first sign of trouble. They're only as good as the world allows them to be. I'll show you. Sitcoms are for sissies (I do watch Modern Family  ). I used to look down upon TV series watchers too until I started watching one. The writing/making etc., are of unbelievable quality. SS, TV Shows/sitcoms are by seasons and by episodes. Sitcoms in general have 20+ episodes per season and Series(es) have 8-13 episodes. Again sitcoms run into nearly 8-9 seasons and series(es) run 4-7 seasons. The numbers may vary again. If you are sure you can take in the volume I will try and find some links and pm u later.

Oru madhiri pidichu pudikama irukkE.
Slight improvement in Action choreography btw. But still lacks impact of TDK, which I now think agrees well with chaotic universe of Joker and so on..
Biggest disappointment = the dialogue. Heavy and desperate. Alfred choking and teary-eyed, really?
Some improvement in side characters, how the genesis is rewritten. Why was Holly cut short, was it done in editing room?
And that twist is a joke for Batman universe. Is that really a twist?
Lot of pauses for the delayed Batman/Bruce Wayne moments, almost like Nolan wanted it for 'insert clap', so it was fun for the audience.
Zimmer rectifies himself in 2nd half. Too much intruding in 1st half.
kid-glove
21st July 2012, 07:19 PM
This one is too much plot than TDK, which had better moments and better rhythm in 'oruthanku oruthan kadhula-poo'(Seems to be Nolan's MO throughout his filmography. It gets irritating when he plays that with the audience) plot twist and turns. And TDK has much more compelling major characters. In a way, this one takes itself less seriously, reduced to 'pain' as said. Alfred's major reveal isn't quite reflected on Wayne. What's the fun in physical confrontation ('fear of 'death' in the well was very very mild, Begins held tight on 'fear' in ways this one does not)? Apart from Nolan improving hand to hand combat choreography?
Hathway Cables is a huge turn-on in that outfit. Unpredictable as ever, she's still reduced to a one-note character. Thought they could have done a lot with Holly-Kyle, a borderline lesbian relationship. Kyle character-E purinjukka mudiyadhu-ngra madhiri end panni irukkOnum. Another divulge from Batman universe.
As for the 'rise' of the male sidekick, side to side, from Gordon's to Batman's, well done.

The whole trilogy is overrated. But... Joker is Art. Imagine Joker repeating that after me, 'Art' with his head tilted down, mock and lure me to punch him, then he'd grab me by the throat and get his phone call.
I thought Bane didn't transcend any more than a one-noted menace. Poor Hardy, not to blame him. There's only so much you could do with that kind of a role.

How many of us know Batman for longtime? I mean from the comics. I went to the movie with one two such friends....and from the vibe, I understand that this movie is emotionally connecting to Batman fans than dark knight...
Only thing that I found silly was a twist towards the climax.Other than that, I liked everything...... I liked Batman better in this movie than in Tdk. It nullifies any the comparison between bane and joker. It had an wonderful build up to Batman and executed it cleanly... I started watching Batman only in movies and not from the comics. This is the movie that made me a Batman fan...not the dark knight. I liked dark knight for joker....

What is crime? What is the other side? Tom Wilkinson is easy to see.

TDK >>>>> TDKR but that was to be expected. Same goes for Joker to Bane. One has to believe that Nolan was restricted severely by this film. I cannot put the previous sentence in words exactly but that's what I feel. Even the action scenes are jaded and uninteresting. I mean in TDK you have this opening bank job, the tunnel chase, the prison escape and the hospital blowup. I mean scenes were first of a kind and extremely interesting but in this film that was not the case. Eppada stunt ellam mudiyum ngra madhiri irukku. And still he has a fetish for aero plane stunts.
And you had good confrontational scenes in TDK. TDK had good dialogs too. Pr can write more on this. I can't remember one good dialog here. 2nd half is mainly inspired by the score. P_r always asks how scores help films, well there you go. I can't imagine this film w/o this score. Hathaway was better. Levitt was a relief and Oldman was good as usual. Felt sorry for Hardy as an actor of good worth has been wasted.

Rewarding experience. Was intense and very well VFXed. Enjoyed it, as much as X-Men.

it's quite funny that the film came at the time of the great recession and as they show in this vid the american dream it did become true and we looked at that.

Missed this on big screen but watched it many times on TV. Some very good comic characters (Dr. Manhattan, Rorshach and the Comedian). Has some great bgms too (Ride of the Valkyries and My fav I am the boogie man). Not for everybody though. Cinematography is top notch.
Doing something which Terry Gilliam and Darren Aronofsky claimed impossible is seriously laudable. And he, has done what he failed in 300 or missed in Sin City. The music, particularly reminescent of the 50s and 60s is brilliantly chosen.
I can't say how the concise theatrical version would have felt. The wholesome Ultimate cut.. especially the elaborate comic book sequence and the extras were possibly etching me the intricacy of the characters which I might have possibly missed out without reading the graphic novel. (Which I found costs over 1500 Indian bucks on Flipkart. OMG!)
Opening throwing the comedian through the glass scene -ae than namma saran asal-la adichirupaaru :-P.
Hehee. Not as funny as the Villain KSR name appearing sequence, I believe.

That is what triggered me into downloading this one. I am glad I did. ;)

Zizek on TDKR: Dickens, “Cheization” of Christ, Ra's al Ghul as Atreides in Dune, Twain, radical-emancipatory struggles in "People’s power"!
Strange of Zizek to not invoke Assange given he invokes Gandhi and 'divine violence' of people's power :lol2:
Imagine the guy has a typing assistant, and he read it all out in one go. With trademark nose twitch, scratching of arm pits, rough stroking of the beard and adjusting the sticky t-shirt around the chest area.
Still fashions out the best deconstruction of the politico-ideological moves in the film.

In deed, this british Nolan re-imagining non-violent OWS into a violent carnage and dictactorship of the proletariat, is undemocratic commie propaganda nonsense. So I was glad that the Batman joins hand with the state establishment and puts them back in place. And glad that he's dispensed in the process, about time some true blood american took over from that Welsh-English diet freak. Also time for Gordon Levitt to put on a mask, 8 years after 'Mysterious skin'. Aligned enough for you?

Thanks for the Zizek piece KG. Well, he's easier to read than watch/listen :)
Still not quite sure if i get/convinced with the final point, which is the whole point of the piece, in the first place
This is why external critique of the film (“its depiction of the OWS reign is a ridiculous caricature”) is not enough – the critique has to be immanent, it has to locate within the film itself a multitude signs which point towards the authentic Event. (Recall, for example, that Bane is not just a brutal terrorist, but a person of deep love and sacrifice.) In short, pure ideology isn’t possible, Bane’s authenticity HAS to leave trace in the film’s texture. This is why the film deserves a close reading: the Event – the “people’s republic of Gotham City”, dictatorship of the proletariat on Manhattan – is immanent to the film, it is its absent center.

The failure of 'real' Communist measures/regimes, the wildly pervading but evasive absence of centralization (the absent center), of 'dictatorship of the proletariat' (as in Nolan's fiction, and in reality) is his point. And an ongoing discourse of Zizek on impracticality of 'pure ideology' (in expansive works like "Mapping Ideology" and "In defense of Lost causes", it's much unlike Orwell's mode of chronicle ala 'Homage to Catalonia', where the meaninglessness of the mobilized of any multitude of ideas into singular frame as such, 'anarchists', and (in)distinction of communists to anarchists at different levels is merely presented. Zizek actually goes on to ask very many questions, which is all rooted from ideal-real prism)
He isn't offering a solution to resolve the very inherent failure in application of this 'dictatorship of the proletariat' by even the best of ideologies, and how this could be cloaked as a non-violent 'negation' (hence the part about Seeing, I'd also add the sequel Blindness as a companion piece), and how it still carries the immanence (arguably more) than as portrayed (brutal caricature), and the dangerous potential of such mobilization (To extremities) is possible, the holistic premise to panic and invite violence on to itself.
"Sublime Object of Ideology" and "Violence", describes further on the aforementioned and the plurality of mobilized unit of some size mapped as responses to impossible-real kernel.
Key to reading Zizek: Never do it in one go. Would even prescribe a in-sequential reading, key is to latch on to the many hooks in each of the chapters.

ST: It is not for nothing that Sorel is the fundamental reference for Benjamin! This is completely effaced in Agamben’s discussion of the text. When discussing divine violence in recent texts, you tend to refer to events like the uprisings of the Brazilian favelas and the slums of Caracas rather than the antiglobalization movement and its theorists. The example you yourself provide for "divine" violence, in a recent text on Robespierre, are the "food riots" in the favelas of Rio de Janeiro in the 1990s . . . Do these upheavals bear witness to the emergence of a new "subject" of struggles to come? In making this identification, doesn’t one risk the "populist" temptation you elsewhere denounce?
I was in Brazil during the food riots. People from the favelas simply descended into the city and began to loot, to terrorize the middle classes a little bit. I was shocked at how these events were treated. At first, people were horrified, as if it came from nowhere, a divine catastrophe. But once the police took care of the situation, the burnt stores and so on were treated like one more tourist attraction! But violence is a complex phenomenon, and several things have to be taken into account. First of all, we have to emphasize that violence is always a structural problem, an "objective" feature of contemporary capitalist societies. Today, we are fascinated by what I, following Badiou, call "subjective" violence, with an easily identifiable agent. Balibar has developed the idea, itself found in the Marxist tradition more generally, of a basic, structural violence in the functioning of capitalism itself. It is absolutely necessary to read explosions of subjective violence against this structural or objective violence. We shouldn’t focus exclusively on the subjective dimension. And we should also remember that violence is not necessarily activity, action. It is not always the case that social functions run by themselves and that it takes a lot of energy, a lot of violence to transform them. To the contrary, it often takes a lot of violence to make sure things stay the way they are. Sometimes, then, the truly violent act is doing nothing, a refusal to act.

Mannikkanum, idhukku Zizek-e paravaa illa!
Recall the old French story about a wife who complains that her husband’s best friend is making illicit sexual advances towards her: it takes some time till the surprised friend gets the point – in this twisted way, she is inviting him to seduce her… It is like the Freudian unconscious which knows no negation: what matters is not a negative judgment on something, but the mere fact that this something is mentioned – in The Dark Knight Rises, people’s power IS HERE, staged as an Event, in a key step forward from the usual Batman opponents (criminal mega-capitalists, gangsters and terrorists).
Here we get the first clue – the prospect of the OWS movement taking power and establishing people’s democracy on Manhattan is so patently absurd, so utterly non-realist, that one cannot but raise the question: WHY DOES THEN A MAJOR HOLLYWOOD BLOCKBUSTER DREAM ABOUT IT, WHY DOES IT EVOKE THIS SPECTER? Why even dream about OWS exploding into a violent takeover? The obvious answer (to smudge OWS with accusations that it harbors a terrorist-totalitarian potential) is not enough to account for the strange attraction exerted by prospect of “people’s power.” No wonder the proper functioning of this power remains blank, absent: no details are given about how this people’s power functions, what the mobilized people are doing (remember that Bane tells the people they can do what they want – he is not imposing on them his own order).
This is why external critique of the film (“its depiction of the OWS reign is a ridiculous caricature”) is not enough – the critique has to be immanent, it has to locate within the film itself a multitude signs which point towards the authentic Event. (Recall, for example, that Bane is not just a brutal terrorist, but a person of deep love and sacrifice.) "This is why" - WHICH is why?
"It's a mockery/caricature of the OWS/French revolution" -> is the obvious and easiest criticism to make, external, OK.
" No wonder the proper functioning of this power remains blank, absent:" - What i'm trying to understand is what he infers from this absence? What next? How? :medhuva thaen varuven:

"WHICH is why?" = "No wonder the proper functioning of this power remains blank, absent: no details are given about how this people’s power functions, what the mobilized people are doing (remember that Bane tells the people they can do what they want – he is not imposing on them his own order)." So indha 'taking power' depiction-a surface level-a criticize panradhu pOdhadhu..
"What i'm trying to understand is what he infers from this absence? What next? How? " Lack of pure ideology drive in this. But if that's fiction, what about reality?
This impossibility of unified puristic 'ideal'ogy in People's power. You have to put in to context the (possibility of 'pure' agenda) critique mapped in the central piece that he links in the article, link in footnote..

The Dark Knight in Blu Ray!!! - Watched 3 times in I-MAX then and still going great guns. Compared to this TDKR is a travesty. Joker is the best character in any Nolan film. RIP Ledger
