[tscii:0b9ca95974][/tscii:0b9ca95974]Right from the silent era, black & white, colour, 70mm, cinemascope etc., tamil films has come a loooong way. How many greats we have here…great stories, great dialogues, great films, directors, actors, actresses, comedians….you name it and we have it here. We should really be proud of this medium which has been a part of our lives.
Now, in this thread let’s discuss about the Most Lovable and Favourite characters on screen that has made a great impact on us. Was there a similar thread here, before ?? Sorry, I don’t remember.
It could be anybody – a new comer, the protagonist, antagonist, comedian and even a person who did a cameo. Adhukkaga Rama Narayanan sir padathula varra yana, Poona, naai, paambu pondra uyirinagala ellam sollapadadhu. Also, in some of the films they used to say that a phone is a character, a letter is a character, a building is a character, train is a character etc., andha madhiri motifs or “ akrinai “ ellam chelladhu chelladhu !!
And my suggestion would be that let’s not discuss too much about the legends or popular stars in this thread as we have separate threads for them – it’s only a suggestion but the real intnetion is to have fun & to share our thoughts & experience.
Let me start with Manohar, the carefree, nonchalant and charming young man who stole Divya’s heart and met an untimely & early end. It’s only for about 20-25 minutes that he comes on screen but, My God !! what an impact he had made. And, obviously this film made Karthik an over-night star. Almost every young girl, particularly College girls went berserk whenever they saw him on screen. Apart from having unanimous support from the girls, this character has earned lots & lots of accolades from people of various walks of life as well. I’ve myself seen many times that a group of audience come only to watch this particular “ Karthik portion “ in the film and they just walk out of the theatre after Manohar dies.
Yes, Manohar is one of my favourite on-screen character.
Other’s please continue & I’ll return after a while with another character.

Performance nu eduthaalum i love it. People who fuss about "natural", "effortless" (if there's any such thing and whatever it means) acting, "look i'm trying to act" etc should be confronted with this performance (or many other performances by Nadigar Thilagam). Call it whatever you want, but i just loved it. This and Barrister. I mean if PR feels its over the top one can be fine with it but people who are naturalists should have problems with it. Otherwise, much is at stake!
Character nu eduthaalum, i love that tenacity, that arrogance. PP character-udaya sila gunadhisayangal ennudaya oru periyappavukku undu. So, its also a case of (i hate to use these phrases but still.. ) "relating to it", "identifying with..." etc...
I mean its a character whose traits which will annoy in good measure as well, but it is very powerful nevertheless.

Very well put. It exactly is a parallel portrayal of my grandfathers, who were such stereotypes. Since I was quite young when they retired, I vaguely remember their unintenionally funny yet helpless state they were in and the noises they were making. Very well written/played character, I would say.

I am neither here nor there actually.
I just saw a movie by Robert Bresson I found the acting extremely impressive overall and very ordinary in some parts. Then what I found left me confused.
Apparently Bresson uses non-actors, insists of having absolutely no trace of 'acting' whatsover and retains that in the final take. So the artifice of creating is actually non-existence and the 'value of what I appreciated' plummeted instantly for me (whether it should or not is another question, but as of now I should confess I did). And the 'bad' parts were the amteurish acting came to the fore, expressions jumping the gun, end of scene timing misses in transition etc.
So at the moment I wouldn't argue too much about the subtelety being everything. :-) But even as far as dramatic performances go I would still not rate this high in terms of 'believability'. There are so many expressions which Sivaji shows that exist not because they are 'real' but because they are meant to be impressive.
'Apt' is one such. You cannot fault the sentence he speaks etc. But the way he says that -and him teasing his D-i-L are 'unreal' even within the granted melodrama of this movie. What the deuce where they going for first night song ? Cuteness !
And yeah, I found the character and the movie itself very annoying, so that did contribute to me not liking the performance.

PR sonna madhiri Sakthivel Kavundar is one of the most endearing characters ever. Thanks in good measure to that place called Coimbatore. Yeah, generalizations etc etc but everyone who's lived there must have seen person(s) like that or at least some of those qualities. The vegulithanam, respect and helpfulness might even throw one off guard. "Dumb"-nu avasiyam illa...
The film rests on Kavunder's shoulders, with due respect to the other great performances in the film (Raaja intentionally gives a very light unobtrusive BGM - less is more for this film). And IMO, the reason why i'm able to  at every single joke (where Thalaivar is present) every time i see the movie is because of the characterization, accent and Thalaivar's performance. It doesn't rely on "smart", Crazy-type wit-liners or situational jeopardy alone.
The humor would not be what it is if you take away any of thee - Kamal, accent, characterization.
Prabhu quote panna line,

Sivaji as Rangan in padikkAdha mEdhai
In one scene, Sivaji will be having hig night meal and will be having milk, because next day he is going to lift a roller (unnai maadhiri oru roller - to Sundaribai ).
Sundaribai says something sharp that all undeserving people are feasting rightaway and are waiting to get the wealth when Rangarao dies
Both Sivaji and Sowcar are shocked to hear that. But Sivaji is angered and has tears in his eyes not because he has been insulted but because she had mentioned the possibility of Rangarao's death.

This one is arguable here.. But for the hero, he was kinda irritating character "poojai samaiyathula karadi pugundhaa pola". Right from the beginning of his introduction until he finds that they both have come together, he is such an hilarious factor in the movie. I still remember the bathroom scenes, flight scenes, hotel reception scenes. The vazhiyal jokes that he shares with Heera (the flight seat number) to make some sort of converstation shows his jollufying character.
The film rests on Kavunder's shoulders, with due respect to the other great performances in the film (Raaja intentionally gives a very light unobtrusive BGM - less is more for this film). The first half was well set up for Kounder to gain his entry in a best possible manner. The first half, IMO is a typical Balu Mahendra's touch but once Kounder enters, he takes the torch from Balu and goes along with others until the kounder family goes into the court through the wall and ends with
Kounder " enga di vandhirukom",
Koundaramma "courtunga" ,
Kounder "court elam appavae venaamnu sonnaen kettiyae", Koundaramma " mamaaaa",
"chinna" koundar after a brief pause " appaaa "

Adultery & " padi thandiya pathini " characters are not new to tamil cinema ( in fact, for any cinema :D ) But the one that stays in my mind evergreen is the one played by Silk Smitha in Moondram Pirai.
A helpless young girl, married to a hopeless old man. Naturally, she develops an affinity towards this young, charming & handsome hero. Smitha did a brilliant job
People used to argue with me saying that character was thrusted deliberately for commercial reasons. Well, I would say that except for " ponmeni urugudhey " which is definitely for commercial reason, the character has got its own significance. The logic is very simple. When she openly reveals her desire to the hero himself, he rejects her very decently. This helps make the audience to understand what a virtuous guy he is and at the same time his deep love to Viji.

[tscii:adb0a94038]CAPTAIN PRABHAKARAN – ONE MAN ARMY !!!
Another of my favourite character. A fantastic role for Vijaykanth who couldn’t have asked more for his 100th film. Right from the beginning, it was action, action, action all the way.
I could never forget the dramatic opening scene. It’s almost middle of the night. A girl comes running in the broad & lonely road, screaming for help. She is being chased by a police man (Ponnambalam). She runs blindly and collides on a jeep which belongs to none other than Captain’s. IR’s trademark BGM makes it more interesting.
With all the headlights of the jeep shining brightly, Captain stands there like a lion. Ippo angey irundhu arambipparu saravediya….adi pinnikitte police station varaikkum povar. Of course, everyone knows about his skills in action sequences, but here’s my take. He swiftly perches on any stationary object (at times, even movable too !!), makes a turn in the air, kicks the enemy and makes a perfect landing – something like a ballet !! The subsequent fight in the police station is also a treat. Now, when all the cops are exhausted, ivar thenavatta, dhairiyama angey irukkira black board-la thannudaya peru, address ellam ezhuduvaru – sema scene. Upon watching that character doing those fantastic stunts on screen, you feel like rolling up your sleeves and get ready for a fist fight with someone !!!!

Mr. Uthaman from Anbae Sivam
Bavyamaa oru character trainla okkandhirukardha paathutu Vedhandha Iyer vandhutaaronu nenaichaen.
But he just proved himself that he is as good as any other character artiste to make his presence sound and valuable in the train scene in Anbae Sivam.
He starts off with speaking in English, Tamil & Sanskrit that any man can be excited to continue the conversation with him which continues like..
"deva baashaiyila sonnaen, kadavulaiyum marandhaachu, samaskirudhathaiyum marandhaachu"
ARS - "oh samaskridham ellam theriyuma ungaluku "
UTH: "ofcourse, paeru uthaman nu vechitu poi solla koodadhu" (he knows that ARS doesnt know Sanskrit and he maintains his std on sanskrit here ), then comes the real Uthaman..
ARS - "Ad film makera sir neenga"
UTH: "Ofcourse" (just like the way he said yes to sanskrit)
ARS - "naanum thaan"
UTH - with a toned voice he continues from his initial dialogue "ofcourse, enaku andha alavuku paritchayam illai andha fieldla"  - Amazing characterisation and execution.
Once he is caught in the crowd, then his dialogues turns into a well groomed mugger and went on to insult ARS
"manishanaaya nee, un potti padukaiyellam thozhaavittu oru pathu paisa kooda illaiyae, appuram epadi thaanya thirudan pozhapu nadathuradhu " :rotfl: (This might be a common dialogue but after the tragic accident scenes, seeing "real" uthaman was a stress reliever for ARS, Sivam and us. )
and he continues
"Pandhalu Kaaru" , camera turns to a saamiyar with naamam doing aasirvaadham and Uthaman
"aayinaalu bag-ae ichaesae padhirooba theesko" :rotfl3: - One of the talents unused in tamil cinema

HR, captain in Pattukku Oru Talaivan can be considered fun and lovable.
Ninaithadhu yaro needhane…..lovely song.
POT was advertised as a film in which you can see VK doing “ serious “ comedy. The magazines also appreciated his efforts positively. But it was not his first take on comedy. You can note his worthy attempts in his earlier films like “ Madurai Sooran “, Nane raja nane mandhiri “ and even “ Amman Koil Kizhakkale “.
However, I’m not sure about those films having his signature mark of winking his eye, folding his tongue and exclaiming an “ Ahhnn !! “ and giving a blessing pose at the same time. :D
NT
Marudhu - Bale Pandiya (Onnume pannaama suttupuduvangga padupaavi passangga, see my signature for details).
:D
Well, you must be aware that Baley Pandia was made in a very short span. A trip to the US was ahead of him so he worked day & night and finished his portion, including dubbing, within 30 days & left to the States. He could have very well dragged the shoot and finished it after his trip. But, he was NT, who doesn’t want to waste the producer’s money and other people’s time & energy. And, may be because of this hurry burry, the director was not able to squeeze his brains and concentrate more on Marudhu’s character.
Moreover, sticking on to the title, only Pandian’s characterization was done more conspicuously when compared to the other two. Had the title been, “ Baley Sankara Marudhu Pandia “, then each of them would have got equal shares.

Herez my say on a very rare character which may not be PONDERED leave alone liked by any. Infact despised by many.
Its VADIVUKARASI character in muthal mariyathai.
Imagine a woman,
* who loved or could love NONE other than the first man in her life
* try she could she was not happy
* she married for the sake of her child, lived for the sake of the society
*she scorned and yelled at all anyone who possibly disrupted her dream world, where without her knowledge she just lived with ONE MAN, the first man, her first love
* she had pent up frustration, and she strewn it amply around. Because thats all she had!! to give!!!
*When her man comes back again and is found dead, she actually becomes a widow (very beautiful direction) !
She lived a dream life, lived for a man who never cared a penny for her! She loved nobody and nobody loved her. Wasted life! pathetic character! WONDERFULLY portrayed by vadivukarasi!.
My heart goes out for her char !

29th October 2009, 05:47 PM
Not unusual joe, IMO, I feel such characters exist in almost every gully. We have seen some aunts, or neighbours or some old ladies, uncles, just anybody who FROWN feel out of place and dis-associate themselves from the regular fun and goodwill. I am kind of very sure every such individual is piled up with frustration of different order, which is personal, and which cannot be shared.
எது இருக்கோ அது தான் share panna mudiyum. All they have is frustration about themselves, so all they share with others are frowns and sharp words.

SP,
Nice perspective!
Looking back, I'm sure a lot of thought went into shaping each of the characters in any great movie, not just the hero / heroine.

While that may be so, the director portrays Vadivukkarasi's character very unsympathetically. It is to SP's credit that she saw beyond that veneer, not the director's credit.

[tscii:cb6392bba2]PRABHAKAR, M.A. : A morbid character who is forlorn by the disparity that exists in this society. He is bound by inferiority complex and a very disturbing and pathetic childhood memory. But at the same time he also longs for a decent life which he thinks he really deserves. And when this “ decent “ life and his child hood girl interest, whom he loves the most in this world, is denied to him, his demeanour transforms into dangerous levels of eccentricity and turns him into a psychopathic cold blooded murderer.
One can easily get depressed after watching the traumatic experiences this character undergoes. But still, it leaves an indelible mark on the viewer just for the plain fact that he is not a guy from the Mars but could possibly be one among us. There’s just a thin line that separates us from being rational & becoming insane. And unfortunately, Prabhakar happens to be on the wrong side. Being such a natural & “ it may happen to anybody “ kind of a character, Prabhakar becomes yet another of my favourite characters on screen.

MADDY,
The thing is he might have got the average numbers wrong in the respective fields, but in reality, we all know that the sort of disparity shown in the film is not unusual at all. Unfortunately though, the film muddles up things and ends up not raising the right questions. In fact, I think the film betrays a sort of middle-classness in the kind of questions it raises.

Does someone's pain become unreal because it is not justifiable ? That was all the movie was about, in my reading. In fact I had even ventured to say it was about an artist's arrogance. The artist believes he is a superior being. But he is treated with scorn by the society, which doesn't have the 'ability' to understand him and will only abuse him work - by making a pimp out of him to impress a girl to get laid.

Equa's line about the rage being essentially 'middle class' in its roots is true. But why is that a failing ?
Well, because the population that the film intends to “represent” is hardly middle-class! (Prabhakar is, but that's exactly my criticism.) On the contrary, the new middle class is what Prabhakar sees all over the IT companies. (Ram even crosscuts the scene in the IT company his friend is working at, with a lunch-time scene in a yesteryear government office.) And the questions/concerns regarding the various courses available for students to take (again very middle-class), etc. is to completely miss the point. Prabhakar happens to choose the Tamil course for some reasons (and the film builds its questions on top of this), but is that actually how people get thrown into completely different worlds? Throughout the film, Prabhakar remains this exception who talks for “those people.”[/tscii:97eadd9c3e]

My criticism is not on how Prabhakar preserves his ago by saying that he's not the average Munusami, but that the film doesn't offer anything else on this matter. By taking the exception route, the film fails to bring up the questions that are sociologically relevant.

Yester year darling star kid of Indian Cinema, Baby Shalini, for her splendid performances in films like Bandham (with NT), Oasai, Shankar Guru, Nilave Malare etc, etc., She will have the audience spellbound with those big round expressive eyes, cute little mouth, dolly hair cut & the way in which she talks with brilliance laced with innocence (I disagree with people who say that she goes over-board & behaves like an adult). Especially, in all those superb scenes with the legendary NT, in Bandham, you will never be able to take your eyes off the screen.
