AKILA KANNADASAN

Devaraj celebrates his love for superstar Rajinikanth by providing free haircuts and shaves to the destitute, writes Akila Kannadasan
When Rajinikanth wielded a pair of hair styling shears for his role as a hairdresser in the movie Johnny, ‘Rajini' Devaraj was the happiest man in the world. A hairstylist himself, the movie is one of his all time favourites. His house is not crammed with posters of the superstar as one would expect. Rather, it's his motorcycle's side box that bears a hand-painted picture of the style icon. The Rajini devotee has taken his thalaivar's punch line, En vazhi thani vazhi all too seriously.

As traffic drones on in Uppilipalayam on a Friday afternoon, the lanky 49 year old is seen giving a haircut to a shirtless old man on the pavement. The man sits on his haunches while Devaraj trims his beard and moustache. Well-groomed within minutes, he lifts his trembling hands in salute and walks away with his gunny bag.

Devaraj is a mobile hairstylist on a mission. Most of his clients cannot afford to have a haircut. Beggars, vagrants, the mentally ill and slum dwellers – this slice of our society, that most of us have chosen to ignore, forms his special clientele.

Every Friday morning, he starts from home with his kit of scissors and combs tucked inside his motorcycle's side box. Riding around the city, he seeks a destitute in the streets and gets down to business. Once he's done – hair neatly cut, beard and moustache trimmed down, he sets off to find the next needy one and goes on till sundown. “It was on December 12, 1994, the birthday of Rajini sir that I started offering free haircuts,” recalls Devaraj.

“I did free haircuts for underprivileged children in my shop on the last Friday of every month. Parents on daily wages, who couldn't afford to give their kids a haircut, brought them to me,” he says. “I also visited slums and schools for the visually impaired and offered to do free haircuts,” he adds. It was in 2008 that Devaraj started going around the city in his two-wheeler to give the disadvantaged free haircuts once a week.

Having settled his children comfortably in the metros, the humble hairdresser has nothing but service for the society in mind. But not all of is beneficiaries have been welcoming. “Some try to drive me away. It's only after persuasion that they give in. I gesture to make them understand that it's safe and that I've come to give them a haircut,” he says.

“He comes home with a truckload of experiences to share on Fridays,” beams Shanthi, the proud wife of Devaraj. “Once, after sitting through a haircut, to my utter surprise a beggar prostrated before my vehicle, like it was some kind of a deity,” he says with a smile. “Each person I tend to has a unique way of expressing their gratitude. Some nod their thanks, some hold up their hands in blessing while some disappear before I get the place cleaned up,” he says.

“Rajini sir is a great actor. I look up to him. Most of his movies convey social messages; it's his way of doing his bit for the society. This is my way of doing it. I've been a hairdresser all my life, it's what I do best and I intend to make the best use of it”. Spoken like a true hero.[/tscii:8d98061114]

Another 80s Reunion (http://www.thehindu.com/arts/cinema/article604103.ece?homepage=true)

They shaped and nurtured a generation’s dreams in the 80s. They were more than actors for the audience, representing the realities and fantasies of life. They have now come to the peaks of their careers and some of them still lead the way. It was a reunion of the southern stars for the second time at the ‘Evergreen 80s’, organised by Suhasini Maniratnam and hosted by Lissy Priyadarshan in Chennai on Sunday.

With Rajnikanth, who was present last year, five other southern stars, Chiranjeevi, Mohanlal, Venkatesh, Sarath Kumar and Arjun, also joined the reunion this time. Some of the new faces of southern cinema also joined the veterans in the function.

Actors Ambika, Radhika, Poornima Bhagyaraj, Lissy, Radha, Nadiya, Ramya Krishnan, Kushbu, Prathap Pothen, Mukesh, Shankar, Karthik, Mohan, Suresh, Suman, Prabhu, Naresh, Bhanuchander, Ambareesh, Shobhana and Revathy are among those who attended the function.

They spent the evening with music and dance. The actors will meet at ‘Evergreen 80s’ every year, each time in a different State.

[tscii:e01ae95244]Rajini’s request to fans
IndiaGlitz [Thursday, September 02, 2010]

Superstar Rajinikanth has requested his fans not to take pains to attend his younger daughter Soundarya’s wedding ceremony in Chennai on Friday. “At the same time, I need all your blessings”, he said.

In a statement on Wednesday, the top actor said that though he wanted to invite all the fans to his daughter’s marriage, he was unable to do so because of space constraint and logistic reasons.

“Hence, with a heavy heart, I took a decision not to invite you. But I request you all to bless the couple”, he said. Soundarya will marry Ashwin, a Chennai based builder at a high profile ceremony at Rani Meyammai Hall in Egmore Friday.

Arrangements for the event are being supervised personally by the Superstar himself. If sources are to be believed, Rajini has gifted a brand new apartment at Chetpet to Soundarya and she will move with her husband to the new house immediately after the wedding.[/tscii:e01ae95244]

Guys, one crazy desire of mine since I saw Kaaka Kaaka in 2003, that I so desperately want Rajini to act in a Gowtham Menon movie! I know they both met in 2004 for some script discussions, and Gowtham later in his interview said how excited Rajini was, but I don't think it materialzed for whatever reasons... :(

Any freaking way someone can communicate things like this to Rajini himself? I know I'm asking for something unattainable! But Gowtham is the only director I have been crazy about after Mani and Shankar, and probably the only director of this generation that has even impressed me (forgive my ignorance or lack of knowledge on other new directors), and given that Thalaivar doesn't have too much time on his hands to continue playing the "hero", I hope this happens somehow! :P

avan thalivar kitta "pachai killi muthu charam" padathai discuss pannanammmm

Thalaivarum wow, interesting apdi ipdinnu buildup kuduthittu koodave iruttu kada alwavayum kuduthiruppaaru

It would be really interesting if they both could do a movie.
Another Cop movie from GVM could only be a rehash of his earlier ones'.

Nerd, it's not about which character he plays. It's just about the finesse I see in Gowtham's movies that I would Thalaiver to be a part of! I know we've been disagreeing on this ever... :P

[tscii:3d187fc8e9]WHAT BOLLYWOOD CAN LEARN FROM RAJINI (http://www.tehelka.com/story_main46.asp?filename=hub110910Whatbollywood.a sp)
By BARADWAJ RANGAN

RAJINIKANTH IS stylish, and on that topic there can be no discussion. There are those cigarettes flipped stylishly into the air so they can complete the improbable trajectory to his waiting lips. There’s that hand stylishly ploughing through his hair from the forehead on. There are those sunglasses that he twirls in his fingers before stylishly positioning them on the bridge of his nose. There are those patterns being traced in the air with a stylish forefinger, accompanied by a soundtrack effect that makes it appear that a whooshing wind is snaking through the theatre. There are those stylish ‘punch’ dialogues that percolate into pop mythology. There’s that laugh, the stylish one that goes ‘aa... haa... haa...’ (To non-fans, these are just syllables, but Rajini devotees will replay in their minds’ ear the singsong intonation of this laughter.) And there’s the not inconsiderable fact that his contemporaries in Bollywood, like Amitabh Bachchan, have graduated to playing character roles and being Aishwarya Rai’s father-in-law, while Rajini still gets to be her stylish leading man in the upcoming Robot, in a double role, no less.

And yet, for a star so synonymous with style, Rajinikanth’s off-screen appearances can be perplexing to the untrained eye — and by untrained, I refer to the non-Tamil eye. We Tamilians, after all, are used to the dichotomy of our heroes looking one way on screen and another in real life. Cinema is a manufactured medium, and it would stand to reason that the faces up there are manufactured too, made up with make-up. After all, an actor playing an unblemished hero in one film may, in his next outing, slap onto his face a protuberant mole and a fiery set of whiskers in order to portray a villain — and we know, in our logical minds, that neither of these is a reflection of the star when he wakes up in his bed in the morning. So we don’t really flinch when Rajinikanth comes to us bewigged on screen and bald off it. He is, after all, 60. Lesser men have been reduced to shiny domes at far younger ages. (Ask me. I should know.) So when, in an audio launch for Robot, Rajinikanth looks his age, looks like the grandfather that he is, it doesn’t frazzle us. He’s not acting now. He’s real. That’s all there is to it.

But this very normal, very logical set of expectations doesn’t fly in the case of non-Tamils, especially those used to Bollywood stars, and they often seem surprised that a star can let himself be seen like this in public. The superficial explanation, I suppose, is that the Bollywood star is vain and Rajinikanth is not. That certainly could be (and probably is) true, but then vanity has always been a perquisite of stardom. There was a time in Hollywood, in the studio era, when publicity departments (acting on the studios’ behalf ) would control every released photograph of their contracted stars. They knew which profiles, which cuts, which colours suited their stars, and, more importantly, they knew how the adoring fans wanted to see their idols. It was to the studios’ advantage to maintain these illusions. Even in the films, a star would be seconds away from a painful death, and yet a cluster of klieg lights would bathe their heads with a halo appearing to hint at the angels waiting just around the corner. No one wanted to see a face twisted by consumption or cancer. They wanted to worship the countenance of a star.

Or so the studios thought. Gradually, the 1970s brought in a more gritty Hollywood, influenced by the starker aspects of European cinema. As greater numbers of stars allowed themselves to look like real people, the public aspect too began to change. Stars could pose in crumpled T-shirts if they wanted to, with their eyes still bleared by the previous night’s hard drinking. Indian cinema, however, never followed suit. Stars were still celestials, illumined by flattering soft-focus photography. (And this is especially true of heroines, who, even today are expected to conform to ridiculous standards of size-zero beauty.) The average citizen did not need to know that they burped and farted and woke up with bags under their eyes. Unless you were a character actor and no one sought you out for your looks or cared if you toted around an industrial-strength paunch — the public image, the pin-up image, determined the private pose.

The trained eye, meaning the Tamilian eye, does not flinch when we see Rajini bald off-screen. He is, after all, 60
UNLESS, OF course, the star is Rajinikanth, who’s still playing the hero. Or, for that matter, the unapologetically thickset and dark-skinned Vijayakanth. Or the proudly bald Sathyaraj. Whatever your opinion of their talents and their films, you come away respecting their honesty, their humility to reveal themselves as they are. They don’t care. And neither do we. One reason could be the untested sociological theory that, in the south, audience seek out heroes who look like them, who look rooted and real, whereas in the north, they want their heroes (the six-packed Shah Rukhs, the eternally youthful Aamirs and Salmans) to set standards they can aspire to. The explanation appears to be that the attaining of the fair-skinned, modelpretty heroine by such a hero is the average wish-fulfillment fantasy of the moviegoer in the south. No one I know has ventured out with a poll to determine the veracity of this theory, so it remains a theory.

But here’s another theory. Couldn’t it just be that the average audience member is intelligent enough to separate the public persona from the private? And perhaps we like Rajinikanth more because he’s one of us — richer and more known, yes, and yet like us in the ways that matter. We all agonise with ourselves in our daily lives, and maybe it is a matter of reassurance that even without a six-pack, even without a head full of hair, even with the slightest of sagging jowls, someone somewhere can slay the beast and bring home the beauty. Forget the fantasies on screen, this is a far more fantastic narrative occurring off-screen. Perhaps Bollywood stars — especially the ones in their forties and upwards, some of whom apparently are staving off signs of ageing with nips and tucks and hair weaves — can learn this lesson from Rajinikanth, that you can be yourself and your fans won’t stop loving you. On the contrary, they just may come to love you a little more.

Its a good one, Its is that 1 humble man's story which everyone tries to give their own shade to it. But I totally don't agree with this article.

How one wants to look , is his or her will. If North Indian artistes wants look more glamorous in public eye, I don't see a problem there.

I don't think there is nothing to learn from anyone here.

Some live in Simplicity . Simplicity lives only in some souls.

Global phenomenon..
2010-Sep-18
Guest Article :

It was 1.30 pm. I kept starring at this thin guy as i walked into the lecture hall..

I have seen him on numerous occasions, never have i initiated a conversation despite my inner desire to talk to him. This time i sat next to him and i was waiting before i could actually start off a conversation.

Suddenly out of the blue his phone rang " Oruvan Oruvan Mudhalali.." and he started talking in Japanese!

I was just stunned for a moment but to my disbelief this paved the way for a wonderful friendship. Its been almost a year since that day and we are still good friends. The one thing common between the Japanese guy and this Indian beyond wildest dreams is "Rajinism".

Superstar Rajinikanth. The name resonates a sense of style, a sense of awe-inspiring persona & a sense of hope. Style is often something that always fascinates me as it is not something that you can attribute to anyone and everyone. It has to be intrinsic as well as extrinsic. It has to come within yet reflect a sense of grandeur and class on the outside.

Style is not just mannerism, Style is not just rambling about some useless dialogue. Style is about evoking a sense of aura around one self, Style is about exhibiting class around; Style is about evoking a sense of adrenaline pumping through you so much so that you see yourself doing exactly what the actor does.

When he pulls the oonjal down using his cloth with such dashing power in Padayappa, the adrenaline pumps! When he says in Baasha that "Nallavangala aandavan sodippa, kaivida mattan..", class is exhibited! When the mottai boss comes out in Shivaji as MGR, the word presence & aura are redefined! The cumulative effect of all these qualities makes Rajni the style icon that he is today.

To me, Rajini the persona in real life is as appealing, if not more, than reel life. If such style can be exhibited & mass appeal earned on the outside, intrinsically one has to be pure. To be intrinsically pure, one has to be simple, innately harmless & humble and to achieve this he has to surrender to the almighty; that is the bedrock of Rajini's super stardom.

The irony is that Rajini's mass image skyrocketed to its peak in the 1990's but thats when he started becoming bald, thats when he left the inhibitions of a star, thats when he lost the looks that so called "defines" stars. One thing that propelled during that time is his spiritual growth, his intrinsic purity got more enhanced, his extrinsic stardom propelled like a rocket.

Tell me one actor in World Cinema, leave Indian Cinema, who has the balls to come outside with a bald head, grey beard in every single public outing? And yet demand such popularity? Never ever do you see such humility in any actor or any other public figure in modern India. His ability to be humble ensures that he is always not making castles in stratosphere but is firmly rooted to earth.

Critics might argue that he had a nervous breakdown during the beginning of his career but who doesnt fall in life? He is no saint is he? Failing is not a big deal but rising like a horse to superstardom despite the fall defines the greatness of thalaivar. The ability to shut the rut out and come back pure and pristine is great; to sustain it is legendary.

Complete surrender to the almighty in all aspects of his life make's him immune to the artificiality that cinema industry offers, it makes him pure, humble & simple; it makes his persona a bigger blockbuster hit than a Padayappa or a Baasha! Rajini is not a cinematic genius like Kamal; he has the guts to tell the world he is not.

Rajini is not from a big family like Amitabh Bachchan; yet he has risen to be the highest paid actor in Indian cinema. Rajini does not have the marketing acumen of an Aamir Khan yet his movies are blockbusters that the Khans envy of. Rajini does not have a pan Indian appeal; he has a global appeal that transcends language barriers in countries like Japan, Korea & France. All his contempories above are in awe of Rajini, yet Thalaivar would be in awe of all of them not himself.

Rajini has the ability to create a sense of hope within the common man that one can reach the pinnacle of stardom with his hardwork & values irrespective of their background; that is the epitome of greatness. Rajinikanth's superstardom on the extrinsic level is derived from the intrinsic qualities within; thats what makes him a legend!

My Japanese friend called me up yesterday and said " Dude, Thalaivar's movie first day first show in LA?". I said "Hell yeah". And he says "Not in Tamil but the Japanese version in a Japanese theatre in LA!!".

So essentially I am going to watch Robot in Japanese & Tamil in a foreign land called America. Now thats what you call a global phenomenon..

Pera Kettonae Chumma Adhurudulla! Thalaiva nee vazhga!!

Thalivar enters CBSE books

Having scaled many new heights, superstar Rajinikanth has entered the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) school textbook with his success story, 'From bus conductor to Superstar'.

Published by the Oxford University Press, the book Learning to Communicate, has a chapter on the superstar 'From Bus Conductor to Superstar'.

The chapter, which comes under the unit 'dignity of work', explains the success story of Rajinikanth, through an experience of his friend Bahadur, who was the driver, when the superstar worked as a bus conductor in Karnataka before entering the films.

It begins with Bahadur going to a theatre to watch Sivaji - The Boss, Rajini's latest blockbuster and recalls his association with the actor.

It was Bahadur, who prodded the then conductor Sivaji Rao Geakward to join the Film Institute in Chennai after identifying his talent in acting.

After admitting the reluctant Rajni in the Film Institute, Bahadur took care of his financial needs for nearly two years. The chapter explains how the Superstar still catches up with Bahadur.

Incidently, Rajinikanth was presently acting in a film Kuselan, depicting the story of an actor, who has not forgotten his childhood friend, who is a barber.

At the end of the chapter, the students were asked to interpret and state why this story fits into the title 'dignity of work', thus making Rajini's story, a good example to emulate.

well... if we seperate the emotional factor attached, after all Rajini has attracted ppl thru his acting skills and he has never failed to amuse the ppl thru that with his movies... Some like Rajini for his down to earth persona and as a Human and one can never blame Rajini for being an "actor" in real life also.. When this is the reason for Rajini's phenomenal fan base, why shud a fan expect himself to be called for a function which is rather the part of his personal life. If Rajini has asked his fans to do something for him personally for boosting his image or for any other reason, then there is a reason for the outburst. When will we learn to see an actor as a actor?

Very hard hitting article that outlines the malaise of monopoly on thamizh film world by Sun group. there are some sensational generalisations, yet the name of the portal is "vinavu" so they are asking some uncomfortable questions that Anandha vikatan or kumudham might be very afraid to ask.
endhiran's success - which might be well deserved (assuming it turns out to be a good film), might not be a good thing for the film scene in general. The reasons are not hard to find. Lets sincerely hope that Rajini comes back to his old self and starts collaborating with talented new comers atleast in future.

Rajini enters CBSE textbook with his success story

UNI
Posted on May 29, 2008 at 18:53 | Updated May 29, 2008 at 20:42

Chennai: Having scaled many new heights, superstar Rajinikanth has entered the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) school textbook with his success story, 'From bus conductor to Superstar'.

I think the gist of the letter is that all other actors take care of rasigars and rasigar mandrams while Rajini shows considerable interest when his film is about to release. OFcourse there is a load of crap in the letter, but this point has to be considered by rajini fans . Even Kamal who has made his rasigar mandrams to narpani mandrams and had told them clearly about his stance on politics, seems to meet Rasigar mandram ppl and participate in some functions (one function too many according to Anban and Co.). The deliberate example of Prabhu honouring rasigar mandrams in his son's marriage is another example quoted in the letter. The underlying tone of the letter is "Vaazha vekkirathukku mattum dhaan dheivangaLaa?". If Rajini was thinking like what you said, then why samaaLips, arranging for batch darshan of the wedded couple etc., etc.,

[tscii:aca2390cdf]Why Rajiikant Rocks ? - Forbes India hails Thalavar Rajinikanth
2010-Sep-28

Its real proud moment for every single Rajini fan accross globe as the first Actor from India to get such recognition from FORBES INDIA MAGAZINE... Thalaivar..... you are a real star a real leader... On behalf of millions of Thalaivar fans Rajinifans.com thanks Forbes magazine for giving such an amazing article on our thalaivar.

If anyone can make Chuck Norris look like a one-roundhouse-kick wonder, it is the southern superstar Rajinikanth. He’s larger than life. His fans would have you believe, he created God when he smiled

It is not unknown for fans to fast before a Rajini release, as prayer to the Gods for success of his film. But, perhaps, in a part of the world that puts its film stars on very high pedestals, that’s not unusual. Try this.

If you could possibly wangle a first-day-first-show ticket to a Rajini starrer, you will witness something you won’t see in a movie theatre, ever.

Rajinikanth gets his very own credits styling. The screen will say ‘Superstar’, then his name will follow: ‘Rajini’ in English and then in Tamil, glowing in platinum. By the time your eyes adjust to the glare, you realise that you might also lose your hearing. Every member of the theatre audience is standing up, chanting ‘Thalaivar! Thalaivar!’ (which means ‘boss’ in Tamil).

Then he will make his entrance: First you see the underside of his shoe; then dried leaves and debris will fly out of the way when the foot comes to earth. Then the camera moves above ground and pauses, looking up, as a supplicant would to the saviour. That’s when the noise in the theatre reaches a crescendo and… the credits pause. And you see, at the foot of the screen, the regional distributor, the multiplex manager, and a few other dignitaries, resplendent in crisp white veshtis, are standing with a priest, who begins to chant prayers. Which end with the men in veshtis holding out their right hands and performing an aarti by burning camphor on their palms.

Then the crowd will settle down and the film will continue. Chances are, you’ll see the signature moves: The finger pointing skyward, deft handiwork with the sunglasses (in older movies, you’d have seen the cigarette toss; he doesn’t smoke on screen now, though). You’ll see gravity-defying jumps and hordes of bad guys being done in. Through it all, nothing will dislodge the Superstar’s smile and sunglasses.

Rajinikanth’s story is straight out of the movies: Boy from the wrong side of the tracks makes it big. Born Shivaji Rao Gaekwad, he had a wild childhood and even wilder youth where his pranks got him into all kinds of trouble: He was thrashed by the cops for chasing girls and beaten by restaurant workers for trying to pass off an old six rupee bill for a table full of food that he and his gang had demolished. The tale of how he moved from bus conductor to stage to screen is too well know to retell.

Suffice it to say that for all his hell-raising, there was a talent which his friends recognised and people noticed first on stage. His wild ways were temporarily tamed when playwright and director ‘Topi’ Muniappa offered him a chance to act in mythological moral plays. The story goes that he played the villainous Duryodhana so well, he was applauded by old men when he was ripping off Draupadi’s sarees.

Hindi cinema, which was yet to become Bollywood, was, like much of Indian cinema, entangled in social themes. South Indian cinema, especially, was dealing with morality issues, which was fantastic for a performer like Rajinikanth, because he played the villain with much glee (shades of this are visible even in his blockbuster hit Chandramukhi, where his demented, ‘Laka, laka, laka, laka’ still sends shivers down one’s spine).

16 Vayathinile (At the Age of 16) paved the way for unkempt villains who had a singularly disgusting laugh. Mithun Chakraborty ruled 80s Hindi cinema with the same brand of impossible heroics and made-for-the-front-row lines, and inspired similar devotion from his fans. But it took Rajinikanth to not just find the formula of punch-line-laden, impossible-action-packed movie persona, but to make it work for over three decades. And counting.

That he was talented was evident to the director K. Balachander, who offered him a 15-minute role as a drunkard in Apoorva Raagangal (Rare Melodies), a Kamal Haasan starrer. Rajini made an impact as the man who muddies the love story by announcing a prior claim to the affections of the heroine just before she admits her love to the hero.

Sivaji, Rajini’s biggest ever hit, followed his movie Baba. It was his comeback film and established that he was an evergreen hero

His mentor/teacher at the film institute, Puttanna Kanagal, gave Rajini his first Kannada movie Katha Sangama (Collection of Stories), where he played a baddie, a man who rapes a blind girl. Rajini played negative roles with ease, and it was just such a villainous role that first offered him a chance to flick his cigarette in the air and flourish his sunglasses. The film was Moondru Mudichu (The Three Knots), in which he played the friend who creates trouble between Kamal Haasan and Sridevi. The movie became a hit and established Rajinikanth as a super villain.

Rajinikanth, Sridevi and Kamal Haasan in a movie meant registers ringing at the box office. But Rajini was restless. He wanted to taste success in Bollywood as well. And though he worked with Amitabh Bachchan and other major stars, the Punjabi lobby dominated Hindi cinema. Dark-skinned Rajini chose wisely, and returned to his millions of fans. But note this: His Billa, an almost frame-by-frame copy of the Bachchan starrer Don, made more at the box office than the original. Billa, in fact, marked the beginning of the Rajini cult. It was clear from here on that he could carry the weight of a movie by himself.

What’s his secret? How does this 60-year-old grandfather, who makes no attempt to conceal the fact that the little hair he has left is very grey, transform miraculously — and credibly — into a limber young chap with a full head of shiny black hair, who wears jeans and whips up bad guys as easily as he polishes his sunglasses?

Partly it is the focus. After his initial experimentation, he did not attempt to stretch his range, as with the thespian grandstanding of his illustrious contemporary and great friend, Kamal Haasan; he stuck to what he did best, and made that all his own.

(Recently, he said that the two of them had struck a gentlemen’s agreement to not cannibalise on each other’s territory.) He wanted to hear the chants of ‘Adhirudhile!’ (‘Rocking!’) from the cheap seats, and he worked hard to ensure that he kept earning it.

Partly, he’s a nice guy, someone who pays his dues, with a sense of responsibility. Like when Valli and Baba failed to bring in expected profits, he returned the money to the distributors who had made a loss, earning their loyalty forever.

Partly, it’s the simplicity of his image, the impossible, uncomplicated heroics that give the man on the street something to cheer.

Like splitting an oncoming bullet into two with his knife, dodging both split halves, then smiling as each half hits a different baddie and his knife plunges into the heart of the man with the gun. Or how about saving the heroine, who is strapped to an electricity transformer, by running faster than electrical current after a vengeful villain switches the electricity on.

Certainly the whiplash actions, the mannerisms, the gimmicks, if you will, contribute to memorability.

But face it, there is no film school theory that explains why he can make the viewer not just suspend disbelief but chop it into little pieces, set fire to the remains and stomp on the ashes.

There is no intellectual explanation for why the corny rhyming punch lines are such a hit.

Purely and simply, Rajinikanth makes the whole package work. Only he can.

That’s why there are thousands of dedicated fan sites, whose members would rend you limb from limb should you even think about dissing the Superstar.

That’s why even today, the script, the story, the dramatic lines, the costumes of a Rajinikanth movie — they’re all treated like a national security issue. Fan clubs go into frenzy at the slightest hint of a leak and with every movie Rajini and his producers laugh all the way to the bank.

That’s why when Kuselan, not as big a hit as Baasha or Padayappa, was shown across the USA, the candy giant M&M made specially-coloured bites of joy to be made into giant posters of the star; M&Ms were distributed to kids and his fans stampeded the halls as though it was the last show on Earth.

In Japan, he is the ‘Dancing Maharaja’ — and to this day busloads of Japanese tourists stop by his Poes Road home in Chennai to take pictures. In Malaysia and Mauritius people expect to be granted leave from work when his movies release.

In Baasha, he’s just asked his brother to step away from the action. The row of thugs is behind him. They drag swords and sickles and what have you from behind and advance towards him.

He does not turn around; he’s seething mad though. And just when you think he will be diced by those swords, he bends down and pulls apart a hand pump and with the remains, proceeds to beat them all up, one thug after another, then he ties up the honcho to the lamp-post and beats him to pulp. With the light behind him making him look like some avenging God, he raises his finger and the whole theatre screams: ‘Naan oru dhadavai sonna, nooru dhadavai sonna maadiri!’ (If I say it once, it is like saying it a hundred times!)

It doesn’t matter whether you are originally from north of the Vindhyas, you find yourself whistling and stomping your feet, pretending there are villains there, crushed!

What’s next for Thalaivar? Will he, like so many film stars of the South, move into politics? He’s certainly a thinking man, and fans have admired his plunging into issue-based responses, like fasting during the Cauvery water division fight between Karnataka and Tamil Nadu. But he has kept his followers guessing. ‘Yesterday I was a bus conductor,’ he said, ‘Today, an actor. Tomorrow who knows?’

Perhaps it will be spirituality that takes over. Despite the ever-growing bank account, he only seems to get more humble each year. Not for him the carefully publicised temple visit photo-ops of the Bollywood brigade. People who know him say he goes on pilgrimages and visits temples disguised as a beggar. (And, a possibly apocryphal story goes, he is so convincing that once a woman pressed some money into his hands. When she realised who the mendicant really was, she apologised. Rajini, they say, kept the note as a reminder and as a reward for his acting skill.) Or will he just keep being Rajini?

His Endhiran (in theatres October 1) released a trailer that was shown in a special 10 a.m. screening. Tickets cost Rs. 70. It was sold out. A trailer. Could anyone else command such a following?

I can bear witness that his star power is intact. There was this time I was in Chennai, and was headed to the airport to catch a flight.

But my cab ran into a massive traffic jam. Apparently the cops had blocked off the road because the then-Chief Minister was to land in an hour or so, and it had been deemed essential that her road home be kept clear by simply not allowing any other traffic to move. Certain I’d miss my flight, I was panicking.

Fans pour milk on a huge cutout of Rajinikanth after the release of his movie Sivaji in Chennai

That’s when I saw the man himself, talking to the police about three or four cars ahead. They didn’t relent. So Rajini simply stepped out of the car, took out a pack of cigarettes, lit one and sat on the bonnet.

Within minutes, the road kept empty for the CM was swarming with people who had come out of nowhere.

Clearly the black-caped lady would have as much of a wait as the rest of us. The policemen knew what was good for them.

They pleaded with him to get back in and waved him and quite a few other cars through, my cab included. I made my flight, thanks to Rajinikanth.

jg, hope you remember the fan meet rajini had an year back and promised to have it regularly in future...

and beyond all that, if you are not a rajini fan by urself, you cannot understand what actually a rajini fan expect from him and you cant generalise on it, unless you want to be the voice of all the rajini fans or fight for their right.
First of all let me reiterate, I am not a Rajini fan (in a rasigar mandram sense). I am trying to see through the crap in the letter and bring forth points worth considering. And rajini's political stance is not a bother as long as he expresses it clearly. I dont think he is as diffident in any other matters of business.

Jai ganesh , I always wanted to ask you this question by posting something more enlightening or calling out something which we (common fans can't see) what are you gaining?
You are the same person when I posted a regular stuff in KH thread , called me names along with Bala. (I can understand him because is HC KH fan.)

Now what should I call you for this? Anyways I don't want to get to that level All I am saying.. some of you have to show your true identity as to who is you fav actors and whats your agenda in certain threads . Instead of joining this naatamai sangam and carrying around their choomboos conducting panchayats in the name of keeping it balanced. in the process some of you are hurting people's (actor's fans) feelings. Like mine ,

Are we that bad to you Jai?

i did not say that you are a rajini fan and based on what you expect from rajini, or for that matter, you cannot be a fan of any... and if you are not a fan of his, why do you want him to express his stance when we fans ourself don need it.

well... if we seperate the emotional factor attached, after all Rajini has attracted ppl thru his acting skills and he has never failed to amuse the ppl thru that with his movies...

First of all the letter was not written by a "rajni fan". It is written by someone with a bad intention.

It looks like you have not learnt tamil in schools. Anyway I appreciate you keep writing tamil in English. Don't worry about distractors. Tamilians are least tolerant when it comes to accepting mistakes in their language, but they forgot the fact that unless you are tolerant about mistakes, people will not be encouraged to learn. You have my support. Keep writing and learning Tamil.

SUPERSTAR Rajinikanth!
The biggest movie star you've probably never heard of.
By Grady Hendrix
Posted Monday, Sept. 27, 2010, at 10:08 AM ET
Jackie Chan is the highest-paid actor in Asia, and that makes sense. Besides producing, directing, and starring in his own action movies since 1980, he's earned millions in Hollywood with blockbusters like Rush Hour and The Karate Kid. But the No. 2 spot goes to someone who doesn't make any sense at all. The second-highest-paid actor in Asia is a balding, middle-aged man with a paunch, hailing from the Indian state of Tamil Nadu and sporting the kind of moustache that went out of style in 1986. This is Rajinikanth, and he is no mere actor—he is a force of nature. If a tiger had sex with a tornado and then their tiger-nado baby got married to an earthquake, their offspring would be Rajinikanth. Or, as his films are contractually obligated to credit him, "SUPERSTAR Rajinikanth!"

If you haven't heard of Rajinikanth before, you will on Oct. 1, when his movie Enthiran (The Robot) opens around the world. It's the most expensive Indian movie of all time. It's getting the widest global opening of any Indian film ever made, with 2,000 prints exploding onto screens simultaneously. Yuen Wo-ping (The Matrix) did the action, Stan Winston Studios (Jurassic Park) did creature designs, George Lucas' Industrial Light and Magic did the effects, and Academy Award-winning composer A.R. Rahman (Slumdog Millionaire) wrote the music. It's a massive investment, but the producers fully expect to recoup that, because this isn't just some film they're releasing; this is a Rajinikanth film.

At 61 years old, Rajinikanth has made more than 150 movies in India, and he isn't even a proper Bollywood star. He works in the Tamil film industry, Bollywood's poorer Southern cousin, best-known for its ace cinematographers and gritty crime dramas. But whereas Bollywood stars may have devoted fans, Rajinikanth is considered beyond reproach, beyond criticism, beyond good or bad. Ask Bolly-fans about their favorite stars, and they'll spout the typical griping—Hrithik is a little boy, Shah Rukh Khan is spoiled, Amitabh Bachchan wears a toupee—but mention Rajinikanth, and their eyes light up. He is so rich, he does so many good deeds, his films are all No. 1 superhits. Rajinikanth is not just some filmstar, they insist. Rajinikanth is a "real man."

Indian message boards are alight with Rajinikanth jokes, the equivalent of Chuck Norris jokes. ("Rajinikanth was bitten by a cobra. After four days of intense suffering, the snake died.") Onscreen, when Rajinikanth points his finger, it's accompanied by the sound of a whip cracking. When he becomes enraged, the director cuts to a shot of a gorilla pounding his chest or inserts a tiger roaring on the soundtrack. Echo is added to enhance his "punch dialogues," rhyming lines uttered at moments of high drama. "When I will arrive, or how I will arrive, nobody will know, but I will arrive when I ought to," he snarls, confusingly. Or, "I will do what I say. I will also do what I don't say." Then he punches some goon so hard that he flies through the windshield of a minivan and continues on out the back window. Can't argue with that.

Rajinikanth's movies are crammed with comedy, action, and musical numbers (usually by A.R. Rahman), and they take great delight in kicking narrative logic in the face. Chandramukhi (2005) sees Rajinikanth play a psychiatrist so well-trained he can read minds based on a person's facial expression. The movie starts with a marriage, becomes a haunted-house drama, pauses for a musical number in which hundreds of kites spell out "Superstar" in the sky, and then concludes with Rajinikanth fighting a half-naked martial-arts master on the roof during a fireworks display while hundreds of doves flap around. It broke Tamil box-office records, was the longest-running Tamil movie of all time—playing for 800 days at one theater—and became a cult hit in Germany under the title Der Geisterjäger.

When Rajinikanth is around, the camera spirals, dips, dives, and soars during the most banal dialogue scenes while the cinematographer works the zoom lens like a trombone. The editing is hyperkinetic with Rajinikanth thrashing thugs so fast that you don't even see how he hits them. All of his movies are named after his character, and every single one of them starts with a musical number in which he introduces himself in the most insane way possible. In the first scene of Padayappa (1999), he's asked, "Hey man, who are you?" and his answer is a four-minute musical number in which he plays the harmonica, flips through the air, oversees a massive martial-arts demonstration, and then morphs into a baby. At the end, the village chief says, "Padayappa, that song was excellent," at which point the music revs up again, Rajinikanth climbs a 30-foot-tall human tower and smashes open a clay pot, fireworks explode, and the director's credit flies out of it.

But as ridiculous as Rajinikanth is, he's also in on the joke. In Sivaji: The Boss (2007) he's a software engineer returning from overseas to battle political corruption and Wall Street-style fatcats. From a fight in a music store in which Matrix-esque bullet timing allows him to bash five miscreants with a guitar then do a series of dance steps before they hit the floor, to a musical number in front of the Guggenheim Bilbao in which Rajinikanth, in whiteface, sings: "I had a dark complexion then/ Now I am awesomely white!" the whole movie is a combination of fist-pumping populism and wink-at-the-audience masculine camp.

And that's what Rajinikanth offers his audiences: style. The Superstar doesn't just mop his brow with a towel; he flourishes it like a bullfighter. Putting his sunglasses on is an operation as complex as a Vegas floorshow. His action scenes are so mannered that they're like watching a new form of macho Kabuki. As one song about him proclaims, "Your gait is stylish/ Your look is stylish/ Your thunderous action is stylish/ Whatever you do is stylish." While Bollywood movies, more and more, copy Hollywood conventions and morals, Rajinikanth stays respectful to his parents, chaste with the ladies, and firmly on the side of the little guy.

As Bollywood movies drop choreographed musical numbers in favor of MTV-style montages, Rajinikanth stays committed to old-school masala filmmaking. He's "exuberant, mesmerizing, and victorious," as one lyric says about him, but he's also an unreconstructed Indian, a homegrown hero who will never go Hollywood. A Rajinikanth movie without his "SUPERSTAR Rajinikanth!" billing, without his crazy-making opening number, without his fingers pointing like whips, without the world's most complicated plot, without the dshoom dshoom of him punching giant thugs into exploding electrical lines—that's just not a Rajinikanth movie at all.

Laugh at him all you like, but on Oct. 1 Rajinikanth is going to play a robot onscreen in Enthiran, and it is going to gross all the money in the world. Because Rajinikanth, like a Tamil Nadu Cyrano de Bergerac, is the epitome of manly Indian style and, like Cyrano, when one day he goes to his grave, he'll cling to the one thing they can't take away from him, the one thing that has mattered most to him in his life: his panache.[/tscii:5a966bff49]

NDTV Debate on Superstar Rajinikanth
2010-Oct-18

What makes Rajinikanth the Boss?

18 Oct, 2010, 07.35AM IST, Anuradha Varma,TNN

When Salman Khan did his turn as Chulbul Pandey in Dabanng, he was hailed as North India's Rajinikanth... till the real star decided to stand up and be counted.

And, how! His film Robot (Endhiran) released with an unheard of 2,000 prints worldwide at a Rs 160-crore budget and made Rs 950 million in the opening weekend.

Remarks trade analyst Taran Adarsh, " Rajinikanth is the ultimate star of the masses. It's not as if he's unaware of his stardom but he's warm, friendly and down-to-earth when you meet him. His humility shines through and this is what his fans pick up on."

In the South, which is given to hero worshipping its stars, the actor's larger-than-life persona is comparable only to MG Ramachandran , with his good guy image transcending from reel to real life. Analyses Tamil film writer Gnani Sankaran, "When MGR and Sivaji Ganesan vacated the film scene in late Seventies, Kamal moulded himself after Sivaji, who played unusual roles. Rajini fashioned himself after MGR, playing the do-gooder, Superman hero, protector of women and family values." He adds, "Tamilians have always been involved with the personality cult, since the days of the freedom movement. The personality cult is vital both in politics and cinema for commercial success. Here, the two are married!"

While onscreen, the 'Boss' (Thalaivar) Rajinikanth can split a bullet into two to kill villains, in real life, stands a man who greets guests to his daughter's wedding personally, accompanied by his wife. He could be the elderly, balding, dhoticlad father-next-door. As filmmaker Ram Gopal Verma tweeted, "A star requires great looks, good height, versatile acting, six-pack body, etc. And if one has none of the above he will become superstar Rajini."

Chennai-based film historian Theodore Baskaran believes Tamilians are prone to hero worship, from religious icons to politicians and actors. He, however, doesn't approve of the hype over Rajinikanth. According to him, MGR was the biggest star ever, as his loyal fan base translated into a strong constituency of votes too. "Rajinikanth's fans love him for what he portrays on screen."

However, that doesn't stop fans from turning out at 4 am to catch the first show of Rajinikanth's film, bathing his cutouts with milk, even beer and cola. A fan said on his object of worship, "He is not like any other actor. His biggest movie is out today and he is a superstar, but I am sure he is sitting at home calmly, without even caring to shave his beard. Such is his simplicity."

When Robot released, tongue-incheek sms-es went out proclaiming, "Robot released today. Rajinikanth gave The Times of India four stars." But, for the actor, his simplicity remains his calling card. Starting life as a bus conductor in Bangalore, Rajnikanth, who was born Shivaji Rao Gaekwad, is the son of Maharashtrian parents. His friend of over 40 years, Raj Bahadur and bus driver of Bangalore's Srinagara to Majestick route, on which the actor was the bus conductor, recalled in an interview, "Shivaji is compassionate and helpful. I have seen him getting out of his car if he sees an old person on the street and give him thousands of rupees. He does all that silently without anyone knowing."

I was thinking about that too. MGR's age during USV would have been 1973-1917=56.

A2A, He has to verify many stats before talking..

another example..
when talking about Rajini saying "Kuselan is a pasupathy film", gnani told Rajini has said it after the release/failure not before that.. what a crap..

Rajini has said it many times even before the music release etc etc that it is not his film.. he does only a guest appearence.. He even requested distributors not to go for a wide relase..

and why the outrage over rajini - it was Endhiran's promotion right - so it must be directed against SUNTV :?

People who did not see all three parts were trying to support his claim 'Muthu was marketed as a Meena film in Japan' ie. Japan only. But in the first video he clearly says, Muthu ran because of Meena, Padayappa because of Ramya etc (all over the wEld) :lol2:

It was average.....Rajini looks around that time was a total let down (atleast to me). Movie was a pathetic remake of the BB Qurbaani. Chandrabose at the best could only spoil the original numbers. There were few scenes worth watching & offcourse Madhavi.

But the point is avaL appadithaan and Thappu Thaalangal opened the SAME day. Yes. Idhellaam avarukku theriyaadhE.. Times have changed now. Producer's council (yeah, not Rajini) have requested that no two big actors films be released in the same day, let alone films of the same actors.
