Tamilnadu : A Rare Classic Pictorial
- Padmanabha
It is my interest in archaeology that opened an acquaintance with precious materials. I don’t have much personal collections though I would like to have. I always go in search of things like -old buildings, palaces, paintings, etc. There are instances as this one when materials reached me. My association with the Travancore Royal family helped me to come across so many antique items. I make it a point to take at least a photograph of whatever I see.
Travancore history is another attraction. Two years back, on the Vinayaka Chaturthi day, I received a phone call from Serena Emerson. She introduced herself and said she was directed to me by the Palace staff when she visited the royal residence of Maharaja Swati Tirunal. As I have mentioned it else where, it is close to my house and Serena reached with in minutes. At that time I was doing some work related to Tanjore Quartettes. Surprisingly, Serena approached me to know about the Tanjore Quartettes. I took Serena to the residence where Tanjore Quartettes lived. It is maintained as such and is occupied by a couple, who owns an antique shop.
In turn I requested Serena to provide valuable materials related to India/South India/Travancore if she ever happened to come across. She spent one month in Thiruvananthapuram and I introduced her to a Mohiniyattam teacher-from where she acquired some basic knowledge.
She left for the US. Then we maintained contacts through e-mails and she sent me 190 pictures related to South India taken by Edmond David Lyon, in the 1860s and the rest by unknown photographer. Some of them were accompanied by small notes. I thanked her for providing these valuable stills How she got these I don’t know. She didn’t explain.
Thanks Serena. But, I don’t know where she is now. I received a casual mail from her three months back and since then there is no response. Serena where are you?
It would be nice if someone can post latest pictures of these places..
