Credited with putting Indian music on the world map, the powerhouse of musical talent, global tunesmith AR Rahman talks to Hyderabad Times about ‘what next’ after the Oscars

Has getting the Oscars for Slumdog Millionaire changed the western world’s perception of Indian music?
I don’t know. We still have a long way to go. But this award is like an indicator — it helps me take the next big step. And if I do it right, only then will modern Indian music become a factor, a force to reckon with. So many young people in India are doing good music but most of them are trying to be someone else. What I have learnt from getting this award is that to make a significant contribution you need to move into your own zone of originality. Slumdog Millionaire got the award on that strength— it had its own stamp. And Danny (Boyle) helped a great deal in achieving that quality.

What’s the key lesson been in your journey to extraordinary achievement?
That no musical work is less or more important and every step is important in the journey to achieving excellence. Even when I do jingles for TV commercials I take every step with care and the same goes for orchestral pieces —you need to work at them steadily and give them time to breathe. Otherwise, life is a great teacher and you learn a lesson at every step!

Apart from making you an international figure, in what way have the Oscars changed your life?
What was unattainable in the West has now become possible for me. I can walk into any studio in the US with no questions asked — be it Sony or Universal—now people there know me better than I know them!

Are you aiming for the Grammy now?
Yes. In fact Slumdog might get it if it isn’t too late!

Scoring music or performing, what do you prefer?
Personally I like being in the recording studio and peacefully score music. Performance has its uncertainties besides you never know what will happen— sound failure, mike failure and it might even start raining! But when you perform you feel like a gladiator! It gives you a high that a studio can’t. The greatest advantage with performance is you get live feedback which feeds back into the studio, so both complement each other.

There’s a view that you’ve scored better pieces than Jai Ho in your career. Do you agree?
There are bound to be musical preferences, but for me Jai Ho is the biggest song in my career. It’s the spirit of the song that’s important.

Your thoughts on Michael Jackson...
He’s amazing, and undoubtedly the last King of Pop. He was a great human being. MJ called me just a couple of months before his demise, expressing an interest in working with me, but unfortunately that was not to be.

Any downside to being a celebrity?
Yes, an outing with the family has become virtually impossible. We are being photographed all the time, Although I know it’s out of love but… So I have to go abroad to enjoy family time.

Do you have any Tollywood projects in hand?
I’m working on the score of two Telugu films — Puli and an untitled film by Gautam Menon in which Naga Chaitanya plays the lead. There are two films that I’m doing with Mani Ratnam and Shankar which will also have Telugu versions.

Just about three months short of a year after he was awarded the Oscar, A.R. Rahman has done India proud on the world stage once again. This time, it is by being chosen for the World Soundtrack Awards of 2009. Rahman won the award in the ¡®Best Original Song Written for a Film¡¯ category for the ¡®Jai Ho¡¯ song in Slumdog Millionaire. He was also nominated for the Best Original Film Score which was eventually won by two-time Oscar nominee Alexandre Desplat who also won the Film Composer of the Year award for his work in ¡®The Curious Case of Benjamin Button¡¯ starring Brad Pitt.

The awards ceremony was held on Diwali day, October 17, the last day of the Ghent Film Festival, in the Belgian port town of Ghent. Three time Oscar winner Marvin Hamslich was honored with the Lifetime Achievement award at the function.

Rahman couldn¡¯t have given a better gift to all his fans of the festival of lights. All this, while the ¡®Jai Ho¡¯ concert is still fresh in our minds. We simply can¡¯t wait for more. Congrats and thanks Rahman¡*..

We don't know if this 'Slumdog' has made Rahman a 'millionaire' or not, but it is bringing him a lot of 'Jai Ho' for sure!

The composer has added another feather on his cap by winning the ¡®Best Original Song Written Directly for a Film¡¯ award for the song Jai Ho, at the ninth ¡®World Soundtrack Awards¡¯.

Rahman had created history in early 2009 by becoming the first Indian to win two Oscar Awards in the ¡®Best Original Score¡¯ and ¡®Best Original Song¡¯ categories for Slumdog Millionaire at the Academy Awards that were held in February in LA. The film had received 10 Oscar nominations, including 3 for Rahman.

Well done Rahman!

Rasathi is based on A capella.

In modern usage, a cappella often refers to an all-vocal performance of any style... Today, a cappella also includes sample/loop "vocal only"

Yeah, Rasathi does have a bass line during the chorus. So its not a strict acapella.

Strictly film music 8-) (ARR's fusion-genre). The concept of having a full song without instruments (not just the bass line) with only vocal/chorus itself brainbox scheming while all the rest of the tracks are technically/instrumentally power-packed. If I dig deep thru wiki, Islamic (Sufi) music "anasheed/nasheed" (not qawwali) a similar type of a capella music also doesnt accompany any instruments. Mostly with a lead vocal accompanied by chorus. With Shahul hameed in the song this is quiet possible. ARRke velicham.

Question: Do you find a difference in your writing, while working with different composers? Do words come out from your pen, based on whether the tune is IR's or ARR's?

VM: Illayaraja's tunes have the "tamil" touch to them. AR Rahman's tunes have the whole world's touch. Illayaraja is a man from the villages. He infused folk music which he grew up with, and various rural music forms into his fulm music. Though he blended it with Western music, basically he is a village man, and he ruled folk music. This "tamil" touch in his music was easy for me, because, I'm a village man too. I too grew up with the village music.

But, when writing for AR Rahman, I needed to fly to different countries in the west, and make myself aware of different music forms which were new to me. It's a bit difficult to write lyrics for AR Rahman's tunes. He doesn't make ordinary, usual tunes. He makes fresh new tunes for which it is almost impossible to filt lyrics!

I once asked Rahman, "Why do you torture me like this, by breaking the phrases in your tunes like this?"
Rahman replied with a smile "Anyone who knows Tamil can write lyrics for an ordinary, normal tune. Writing for such challenging tunes will make you special, and give you that pride of a true 'poet' "

For a question which I asked with some pain, he replied with a smile!

Rahman’s two-and-a-half hour free and exclusive music-dance performance will include over 40 Bollywood dancers, singers, and musicians at outdoor Parramatta Park near Sydney, starting 7-30 pm. Festival website says about Rahman: “Sydney Festival is proud to celebrate this inspiring and multidimensional artist”. New South Wales Premier and Festival President Nathan Rees reportedly described Rahman as “without doubt one of the world’s great talents”.

This Festival, from January 9-30 next, will showcase exceptional dance, theater, film, and music programs by renowned artists from all over the world.

Forty-three Rajasthani musicians from India will also stage during this Festival “The Manganiyar Seduction” concert in a whimsical custom-built ‘magic box’. Directed by Roysten Abel, the repertoire ranges from ballads about kings to mystics written Sufi songs and songs marking marriage-birth-feasts-rains; and the ensemble spans three generations. Showing multi-cultural Australia, Festival First Night will include music-dance performances by “Bobby Singh & Friends”, including Australia’s leading table player Bobby Singh, Sarangan Sriranganathan, The Bollywood Sensations, Rasa Duende, etc.

After winning couple of academy awards with Slumdog Millionaire, the Mozart of Madras – A.R. Rahman has been approached with many Hollywood offers. Although, his project Couples Retreat didn’t make it top on charts, the musical album has been doing good business in audio markets.

Now the latest reports have stated that A.R. Rahman will be consecutively scoring music for more Hollywood films including Danny Boyle’s tentatively titled 127 Hours. The film is based on real life of mountaineer Arson Ralston and his unforgettable experience of cutting his own forearm.

The film is produced by Christian Colson, who produced Danny’s Slumdog Millionaire while Simon Beaufoy (won academy award for best screenplay –Slumdog Millionaire) will handle script and screenplay. A.R. Rahman will soon meet the Slumdog Millionaire team to go ahead with the project.

Apart from this film, Rahman has already signed deal for Ashok Amritraj’s Hollywood production Street Dancing. The film is based on a dance competition set in backdrops of Singapore and New York. Since, Street Dancing will include varieties of dances across the World, closer sources of Rahman have mentioned that he will be roping in various instrumentalists and singers from various countries.

A R Rahman is so inspired by the King of Pop, Michael Jackson that he has decided to include Jackson as a subject in the KM Music Conservatory, a music institution that he runs in Chennai.

Rahman will also deliver the first lecture on Jackson. According to the music director, Jackson’s life, music and how he inspired him will all be a part of the subject.

The Mozart of Madras has been quoted as saying by the DNA, “I have been inspired by Michael and his works for years now. I had met him and though he was such a big star, he was always a very humble human being. That really touched and inspired me. I think he was an inspiration for an entire generation. His music must have influenced countless musicians across the world and it would be an honor for me to have the students of my music school learn and discuss the artist of the century.”

A two-hour delay in flight doesn’t bog him down nor does it stimulate emotions like annoyance, even when the night is long and rehearsals need to be done in full force for Saturday’s concert. AR Rahman’s calm demeanour is a thing to reckon with. Hard-pressed for time, the Mozart of Madras settles for an interview in a white Bimmer. Driving down the city roads to destination Salt Lake Stadium, he talks about the
journey called life. Excerpts:

This year, Time named you among the 100 Most Influential People in the World. How does it feel to be on the powerlist?
It felt good. I’m second time lucky. Earlier, Roja featured on Time magazine’s 10 Best Soundtracks of All Time. This time, it was different. At the function, I was sitting on the same table as Michelle Obama and Oprah Winfrey! When you get opportunities, you put them in the right perspective. I’ve been doing just that.

When the country’s music lovers say it can’t get bigger than Rahman, does it put undue pressure on you?
People have been very kind to me. Representing one family is different from representing a state or a country. You need to push the envelope, without losing focus. Fact is, you need to stay grounded, even if you aren’t earnest. I remain silent even when thousands get emotional about me. My spiritual life has helped me a lot.

You’ve also joined the Academy of Motion Picture Art & Sciences as a voting member ...
My card is done. But I feel it’s the actors who make more difference by joining the Academy, not people like Resul (Pookutty) or me.

Couples Retreat, dubbed as your Hollywood debut, didn’t garner much response. Would you be choosier henceforth?
Couples Retreat is even more successful than Slumdog Millionaire. Yes, I admit that it’s not at par with Schindler’s List or Star Wars. But it has done pretty well for a formulaic Hollywood film. I’ve won quite a few awards for it too. For me, it was a whole new thing — trying out comedy and that too in Hollywood! I loved doing it. More such projects are welcome. The film wasn’t a musical and expectations from me after the Oscars were high. If anything went wrong, it has to be the timing of the project.

Your six-year-old son, Alim, sang a number in Couples Retreat. Does he insist on becoming like his father?

Of course, it does. If you lose balance, you gain some but you lose more.

It’s said that you keep erratic schedules and even stay up all night ...
That is when I work! And when I don’t, I don’t make it to the studio for days on end.

Is it true that Jai Ho was originally composed for Yuvvraaj and was even turned down by Subhash Ghai?
Why dig out such stories? I don’t do a song for a film. My compositions are for myself. I gave Jai Ho to SM and the rest is history.

Do you consider Jai Ho to be your best composition so far?
It was the right composition for the right film. SM has dark elements in it and the song lights up the ambience. Jai Ho is also in tune with the theme of Satyameva jayate, which appears in the film. Roja’s music too wouldn’t have been the same, had I not added the right tracks to the film.

When a film doesn’t do well at the BO, do you just say ‘let’s move on to the next’?
It’s always that. A film is about team work. You can never be certain about its fate. When I’m working with new directors, it’s always a big gamble. There have been disasters as well. But these are risks I don’t mind taking.

Do you still aspire for an award?
Though awards do good, I treasure the love I receive from the audience the most. Frankly, film music isn’t everything. Music can be exciting beyond films as well.

Your next project is a collaboration with Katrina Kaif...
My company took a call on that. Katrina too was interested. Students from my school will be doing the album of nursery rhymes and I’m in charge of overall supervision. Katrina will not just appear in the videos, but will sing as well.

What’s the status of the Michael Jackson tribute album?
I’m not doing any album on him.

Success has come to you at a young age. Is there a dream left in you?
My case is just the reverse. I never dreamt of being a composer. I was pushed into film music. All I wanted to do was private albums. So, I take life as it comes to me. I’m like an empty platter, waiting to be filled up with a gala fare.

Oscar winner musician A. R. Rahman appears to be focusing on international live concerts.

In January alone, he is giving three live performances and all are out of India. Starting with a live concert on January eight at Doha (Qatar), he will give two-and-a-half hour outdoor free and exclusive music-dance performance involving over 40 Bollywood dancers-singers-musicians near Sydney (Australia) on January 16. On January 21, he will showcase another live concert in Muscat (Oman).

Rahman is also using social networking sites Twitter and Facebook.

Acclaimed Indo-American statesman Rajan Zed has applauded Rahman for creating a bridge between the music of east and west and for strengthening the worldwide market and stature of Indian music.

Rahman, who has reportedly recorded sales of over 300 million, was called “Mozart of Madras'' by Time magazine. Rahman sees music “as a way to connect to spirituality and embrace it” and for “creating harmony in troubled times”.

"The efforts of director Bharathiraja to make Rahman act in a movie is becoming a success.Director Balachander is also requesting Rahman to act in the movie directed by Bharathiraja. Tuesday night, at their first state dinner, President Obama and his wife, Michelle, plan to wow India’s prime minister with a mélange of musical entertainment, presenting musicians and singers that represent a rich sampling of American (and Indian) genres.

On tap for this evening: the National Symphony Orchestra; Jennifer Hudson, the singer and Academy-Award- winning actress; Kurt Elling, the jazz musician from Chicago; and A. R. Rahman, the Indian composer who wrote the score to the movie “Slumdog Millionaire.”

The guests – about 350 to 400 – will savor the hottest event in Washington’s social calendar in a big tent on the White House’s south lawn, according to people familiar with the planning. More details will be released later in the day, including the guest list and the menu (which will be prepared with the help of a guest chef, Marcus Samuelsson of Aquavit in New York.)

Mr. Obama got the big day started at a ceremony in the East Room Tuesday morning where he welcomed Prime Minister Manmohan Singh of India to the White House before a crowd that included American officials and members of Congress, Indian dignitaries and executives, and students from local schools.

“As the world’s largest democracies, we can keep faith with our common values — speaking out and standing up for the rights and dignity to which all human beings are entitled; and showing that nations that respect the rights and aspirations of their people are ultimately more stable, more secure and more successful,’’ Mr. Obama said.

Academy award winner A.R. Rahman performed at the White House on the occasion of Obama's first state dinner. Rahman performed along with his troupe in the presence of President Barack Obama and Indian Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh.

Besides Rahman, the high profile event also saw some brilliant performances by Jennifer Hudson (of Dreamgirls fame), Grammy winner Kurt Elling and the National Symphony Orchestra. 'அன்பா... வெறுப்பா?' என வாழ்க்கை கேட்டபோது, அன்பைத் தேர்ந்தெடுத்த ஆஸ்கர் தமிழன். காதலின் கூச்சலையும் கடவுளின் மௌனத்தையும் இசையாக்கிய கலைஞன். எல்லைகளை உடைத்தெறிந்து இசையில் இறைவனைத் தரிசிக்கும் ஏ.ஆர்.ரஹ்மானின் பர்சனல் நோட்ஸ்...

ரஹ்மானுக்கு என்று எந்தச் செல்லப் பெயரும் கிடையாது. அம்மா, சகோதரிகள் அனைவரும் வாய் நிறைய 'ரஹ்மான்' என்றுதான் அழைப்பார்கள்!

Possibly it must be the first time ever, if this happens. Of course music can cross borders and this initiative shows that in front of the supreme power all are equal and there are no differences like cast, religion, race and language.

The Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanam (TTD), the trust that administers the temple on the Tirumala Hills, has planned to rope in A R Rahman. You might wonder as why will the Devasthanam should call Rahman? The answer is simple - They would like the Oscar winner to compose Keertans for the traditional religious hymns.

Sources say that Rahman will be approached by the Devasthanam board members to compose music for the songs penned by Telugu cum Sanskrit poet Tallapaka Annamacharya, who belong to the 14th century, praising Lord Venkateswara. “Hope Rahman would be lending his services for the Devasthanam,” said an official. It’s worthy to mention that the musician was once a typical Hindu.

Though the musician had done a lot of special albums, this one must be something very special, we say!

So, who¡¯s making it big in the audio markets? At present, its Yuvan Shankar Raja¡¯s Paiyya and Ilaiyaraaja¡¯s Hindi film Paa that are selling like hot cakes.

The store manager of a leading music store in Chennai says, ¡°Previously, A.R. Rahman¡¯s Blue had great sales. But now, Ilaiyaraaja¡¯s Paa and his son Yuvan Shankar Raja¡¯s Paiyya is witnessing grand sales. Since the stocks are getting over soon, we have already ordered more than 500 copies of both the albums.¡±

Speaking about more releases in December, our source adds, ¡°We are really excited, since December will have three big audio releases ¨CGoa, Theeradha Vilayattu Pillai and A.R. Our Music Maestro has truly erased the boundaries and strongly proved as well that music has no borders. Tagged as ‘Mozart of Madras’ by Time magazine, Rahman regards music as “a way to connect to spirituality and embrace it and for creating harmony in troubled times”.

Now A. R. Rahman will be gearing up to work on a cross-cultural movie, titled ‘Street Dancing’. Reports say that the Oscar winning composer will pen the music for this music-heavy movie along with Golden Globe winner English musician David A. Stewart. The movie will be directed by ‘Beauty Shop’ famed Bille Woodruff and the script will be done by David B. Harris of ‘American Dreams’ fame.

The movie which is based on dance competitions of New York and Singapore will feature Cindy Gomez. It will be produced by Hollywood producer Ashok Amritraj.

According to sources, ‘Street Dancing’ is said to be targeted at global audiences, to bring East and West closer through music-culture-lifestyle.

The 52nd annual Grammy Awards, which will be held in Los Angeles, announced its nomination list recently. Among the nominees, Rahman has bagged a place in the category of ‘Best Song Written for Motion Picture, Television or Other Visual Media’. He is nominated for his song “Jai Ho” from ‘Slumdog Millionaire’ along with Gulzar.

Mumbai: This victory chant has no end in sight. AR Rahman has done it again for India as his illustrious song Jai Ho has bagged another international acclaim in a nomination for the highest musical honour in world- the Grammy award.
The multi-talented composer has bagged two Grammy nominations for the Oscar winning ‘Slumdog Millionaire’. The versatile composer has been nominated in the category of ‘Best Song Written For Motion Picture’ along with Gulzar and Tanvi Shah.

He has got nomination along with the legendary Bruce Springsteen for his number ‘The Wrestler’ for the same movie, a song from ‘Hannah Montana: The Movie’ called ‘The Climb’ and a number from the hit vampire flick ‘Twilight.’

He also won a nod for ‘Best Compilation Soundtrack’ for Danny Boyle’s ‘Slumdog Millionaire’. The composer’s ‘Jai Ho’ anthem was the flavour of the year 2009. In this list, he shares space with Quentin Tarantino's ‘Inglourious Basterds.’

Rahman has already bagged two Oscars for ‘Best Song’ and ‘Best Original Score’ as well as ‘Best Music Director’ award at the prestigious BAFTA.

Incidentally, AR Rahman is currently in Los Angeles where the prodigiously talented composer is working on his latest cross-cultural movie ‘Street Dancing’ along with the Golden Globe winner musician David A Stewart.

Thalaivar came on stage for FEFSI show on SUNTV......they played Munbe vaa, Anjali anjali, minsara kanna by making him stand for 15 mins or so.........FEFSI chairman "ponnaadai pothhified" for thalaivar and said thalaivar had immediately accepted the invitation........when suhasini asked him to sing a song - he sang "thamizha thamizha, kangal kalangaadhe. vidiyum, vidiyum ullam mayangaadhe".......i couldnt control my emotions because i know whom he sang that for

A.R.R's presence in that FEFSI function was great..All those 3 songs were great..But Munbe Vaa could have been better particularly the Krish portion...

For the first time..in my life, I saw the legendary SPB experiencing discomfort while singing Anjali Anjali-Duet song...Its a very difficult song and no other singer in this age could sing this song effortlessly other than SPB.

Towards the end, he lost breath and was sweating too..He was experiencing some discomfort...Paaka paavama irunthichi...

ARR was dignified as usual keenly observing all the singing and orchestration going on...

Sreenivas was singing "Poovinai Thiranthukondu" from the movie of Aanandha Thandavam. Some reason he was tensed while he was singing some of highnote of the song.

I could see ARR was so happy to see GV Prakash's performance.

:?[/tscii:aad91370bf]hi leosimha.. u know how the system works here.. the composers get paid a small sum of money and that's it.. unlike in professional terms where composers get royalty for the sales of their work.. surely ARR could have added another hit to his list.. money wasn't his priority.. he wanted other composers to get their rights.. That's why he refused to work for OSO unless they agreed to pay royalties to the composer.. a noble thought :)

RR was just making a fool out of himself with such baseless accusations. ARR has been giving fabulous music even from his Roja days. If RR really wanted to organize a function to felicitate ARR, why wait til he wins the Oscars to do so?

Was ARR worthless for such felicitations before SdM happened? Why should it take the Oscars to prove how great ARR is? Is he trying to imply that winning 4 national awards and countless filmfare award is far less important than winning the Oscars?

Oscar winner musician A.R. Rahman’s (Slumdog Millionaire) KM Music Conservatory is reportedly attempting to recreate a world-class orchestra for the enjoyment of India’s people.

Rahman says: “Currently Indian composers must go abroad to find orchestras to record. The vision of KM Music Conservatory is to eliminate this obstacle and provide an exemplary orchestra here in India”.

With the aspiration of producing the KM Symphony Orchestra, KM Music Conservatory trains students to become highly proficient musicians. The first of its kind in India, KM Music Conservatory claims to meet international standards of music education.

Conservatory already offers Preparatory Program (2-5 years), Foundation Program (1-2 years), and Degree Program (three years) under affiliation of Middlesex University in United Kingdom (UK), and is planning “Masters Program” and a “Diploma in Indian Music and Music Technology”. Conservatory will also teach entertainment icon Michael Jackson as a subject, according to reports. Many faculty members have degrees from USA and UK. Sound editor Joe E. Rand (Titanic) has lectured here besides demonstration by Vienna Chamber Orchestra.

Founded by Rahman (who is also its Principal), KM Music Conservatory in Kodambakkam area of Chennai in Tamil Nadu state of India envisions expanding the horizon of musicians in India by offering education in both Indian and Western music besides music technology and its mission is to provide students with a strong artistic, intellectual, and technical foundation. T. Selvakumar is the Managing Director of this international school of music and music technology whose tagline is "Become the Future of Music".

Acclaimed Indo-American statesman Rajan Zed has applauded Rahman for universality in his music, successfully bringing India’s music on global map, and taking Indian film music to new heights. Zed, who is the chairperson of Indo-American Leadership Confederation, in a statement in Nevada (USA) today, urged Rahman to help nourish the next generation with the richness of Indian music which had produced musical authorities like Dattila (190 AD), Amir Khusrau, Naik-gopal, Puramdaradasa, Tansen, Pundarika-vitthal, Govind Dikshitar, Ramdas, Venkatamakhin, Tyagaraja, Pandit Bhatkhande, etc.

Rahman, who has reportedly recorded sales of over 300 million, was called “Mozart of Madras'' by Time magazine. Rahman sees music “as a way to connect to spirituality and embrace it” and for “creating harmony in troubled times”.

With his 49th flick Asal being wrapped up at supersonic’s pace for an early 2010 release, theories about Ajith’s 50th film are abound but with no official confirmation in sight as yet. While some insiders suggested that Suresh Balaji will produce a film with Ajith in the lead, which will be distributed by Sun pictures, there is no clarity as to whether it will be his 50th film. This will be a coming together of Billa team including Yuvan Shankar Raja but with Venkat Prabhu calling the shots.

Latest news implies that Durai Dayanidhi, Cloud 9 pictures, has expressed interest to produce Ajith’s 50th film. Talks are on for this venture, which is likely to be directed by Gautam Vasudev Menon. Although no confirmation is available from Rahman, he’s being considered to score for this film.

Meanwhile, in an interview to a tabloid, Sameera Reddy revealed that she’s accepted an offer from Gautam Menon for his next film. We have no clue whether this would be with Ajith, but we are still digging out more info in this regard. So stay tuned!

Gowtham Menon to direct Ajith's 50th film!

It is official! Goutham Menon, one of the favorite directors of Kollywood stars, will be directing Ajith in his yet to be titled 50th film. The producer of the film is Durai Dayanidhi son of union Minister M K Azhagiri. Remember he had already marketed Goutham Menon's Vaaranam Aayiram a year ago.

Buzz up!A R Rahman will compose for this film. It is the second time that the Oscar fame musician scoring for Ajith starrer film. According to Ajith's manager, the official announcement will come in a day or two. Earlier, it was said that Venkat Prabhu is the director of this 50th film.

Shekhar Kapoor flew into Chennai earlier this month to record his first song for Paani, officially flagging off his first feature film undertaking since the sequel to Elizabeth two years ago.

Says Shekhar, “Paani is now completely on. We start shooting in April 2010. We're at a pre-visualisation stage. And I needed Rahman's song for that. Since it is located in a futuristic city, I've artistes in Los Angeles, Singapore and India creating my city.”

While the film is set in futuristic Mumbai, Shekhar plans to shoot in Spain. “I've had a big offer from Spain to shoot the film in their country. They too are fascinated by the water theme. It's a massive project. Otherwise it wouldn't interest me.”

The film will star newcomers in the lead. Says Shekhar, “The girl has to be a 17-year old French-Canadian who lives in the Upper City (the posh area) of Mumbai. And the young Indian boy is a desi Leonardo DiCaprio who's a water revolutionary.”

The film is a forbidden love story. “The girl's father is the global head of a water company. We need another girl, a smouldering entertainer like Shakira, who's a big star in the Upper and the Lower City. Then there's an Oracle called Amma.”

Shekhar will cast the hero from India while the girl will be cast internationally. He swears he hasn't decided a single member of the vast cast as yet. “You know I had planned whole schedules of Elizabeth and I hadn't found the actress to play the lead. And since Elizabeth wasn't cast, no one else was. The studios were getting frantic with worry. We tested a hundred actresses. I wasn't the least worried. I knew I'd find my Elizabeth. I saw two shots of Cate Blanchett in a film no one had seen and I decided on her. The most difficult actor to cast was Richard Attenborough. Likewise I'm not worried about Paani.”

The spoken language of Paani would be English. But there will be a dubbed Hindi version. “Even the characters of the Lower City would be speaking English. Slumdog Millionaire has proved that language is no barrier. Even though all the Indians spoke English, the language didn't come in the way of credible self-expression. I will have a dubbed Hindi version too.”

The 2010 calendar produced by Worldlight, a subsidiary of Audio Media Education, in aid of the A R Rahman [ Images ] Foundation, features pictures of the musical genius.

The vision of the A R Rahman Foundation is to strive towards making poverty history. MUMBAI: Sony Music has bagged the music rights of A R Rahman's next project Vinnaithaandi Varuvaaya. The music was launched earlier this week at the Bafta Awards with much fanfare.

Divulging the marketing plans for the project, Sony Music Southern Repertoire head Ashok Parwani says, "We intend to make Vinnaithaandi Varuvaaya a crossover album as we believe A R Rahman as a brand and this music has the power to transcend language and regional barriers. We will service the song videos to all leading music channels ¨C Tamil and National as AR Rahman has a universal reach. Apart from servicing of songs on the radio and the web, we have a lot of on-ground and retail level innovations planned out in the form of road shows, special contests with instant gratifications, meet and greet with the cast and crew. On the digital and mobile front, we have a lot of innovations planned including the iPhone application ¨C which will be a global first for Sony Music India."

The music label has also bagged Rahman's next regional project. "We also have A R Rahman¡¯s next Telugu blockbuster 'Puli' one of the most awaited movie of the year in the Telugu industry," Parwani adds. The movie stars Pawan Kalyan, Nikisha Patel and Manoj Bajpai and is directed by SJ Suryah.

Widening its regional portfolio Sony would also release the music of Rajnikanth starrer ¡°Sivaji ¨C The Boss¡± in Hindi. Talking about the Hindi projects whose audio rights Sony Music has bagged Sony Music marketing director Sanujeet Bhujabal says, "As far as the other Hindi projects are concerned, we have three big projects, but we will be announcing them in the next couple of months."

They’re being held on January 31, at LA, and the Oscar-winning music composer has won two nominations for his soundtrack from Slumdog Millionaire. The song Jai Ho – which fetched Rahman two Academy awards and a Golden Globe – has been nominated for ‘Best Song Written for Motion Picture, Television or Other Visual Media’ and also for ‘Best Compilation Soundtrack Album for Motion Picture, Television or Other Visual Media’.

Rahman, naturally, is pleased. “The Grammy is as exciting as the Oscar. It’s the ultimate music award, isn’t it? Although it’s a nomination for a film song, the Grammy is still another shot in the arm for Jai Ho. Any recognition is welcome.” Not strangely, he feels a huge sense of responsibility. “I hope I never let down my country, my people, my music, my family and myself,” said the music genius who has just returned home from Los Angeles.

Rahman, meanwhile, is unhappy with the outcome of his first Hollywood soundtrack. “The music of Couples Retreat got a good response. But I feel my music was not used properly. I guess you can’t expect music to have much of a place in a comedy. They were more into laughter than music,” he complained, adding, “The music has all been used. But not the way my fans would expect. I was prepared for the outcome when I entered this project.” So he’s not really disappointed by his first foray into Hollywood. “If I had waited for the perfect Hollywood vehicle, I might have had to wait endlessly. It’s not easy for an Asian to enter into Hollywood camps. It’s a new beginning for me. I got great reviews.”

He’s got a lot of offers but also has a tough schedule this year to be able to give any more time to new commitments. And, contrary to rumours, acting is not one of Rahman’s forthcoming commitments. “That’s completely false news,” he said shocked. “I am not going into acting. I’m going to be speaking in a documentary on my friend, the musician P J Mortan. We’ve known each other for some time. He collaborated with me for a track in Couples Retreat. That’s it. I’ve no aspirations to go into acting. God has given me one skill and I’m very happy with it.”

At the moment, he has completed shooting for both Tamil and Telugu version of ¡®Vinnaithandi Varuvaaya¡¯. His long-time project ¡®Chennaiyil Oru Mazhaikalam¡¯ is close on the heels of completion while his untitled thriller-film with Sameera Reddy will kick-start shortly.

Meanwhile, Dayanidhi Azhagiri of Cloud Nine Production has signed a deal with him for Ajith Kumar¡¯s 50th film. The project will take off shortly after the release of Ajith¡¯s ¡®ASAL¡¯ and Gowtham¡¯s ¡®VTV¡¯ (both the films are slated to hit screens in February).

Now we hear from his closer sources that he is discussing few scripts with actor Kamal Haasan and the project will kick-start from 2011. Nonetheless, buzzes are that both Kamal-Gowtham have been planning for a sequel to ¡®Vetaiyaadu Vilaiyaadu¡¯.

As of now, nothing is confirmed about these films¡¯ crew, except the presence of A.R. Rahman in all his upcoming projects.

Madras Mozart’s KM Music Conservatory in Chennai is all set to reach international standards. The music school now boasts of international faculty brought from various parts of the world, all of them products of the most prestigious schools of music.

The next few days are going to provide a big musical feast for fans of Kollywood as the audios of some of the most eagerly-awaited Tamil films of Aayirathil Oruvan

the year are to be released during this period. The week will kickstart with the audio launches of Ultimate Star Ajith¡¯s Asal and Jiiva¡¯s Kacheri Aarambam, which is scheduled to take place this evening. These will be followed by the music launches of Gautham Menon¡¯s Vinnaithandi Varuvaayaa and Venkat Prabhu¡¯s Goa.

The new launches are expected to exert tremendous pressure on the earlier hit albums, which include Aayirathil Oruvan( Un Mela Aasadhaan...), Paiyya (Thuli Thuli...), Vettaikaran (Karikaalan...) and Theeratha Vilayattu Pillai (Poo Muthal...). A spokesperson of an FM station says, ¡°Never before has such competition been witnessed as the new albums, including Pongal releases, are fighting for space on the charts against earlier albums like Harris Jayaraj¡¯s Aaadhavan. Now, with the audio release of Asal, Goa and VTV, the competition will only get better.¡±

The Rs 125 to Rs 150 crore Tamil film audio market seems to be booming on the face of it. Actually, for producers it is not financially viable as audio rights range anywhere between a lakh and a crore of Rupees. At the same time, all leading music directors are demanding and getting salaries anywhere between 50 lakh and 2 crore Rupees per film. Says producer PL Thenappan, ¡°In Tamil films, music plays an important role as it acts as a teaser to what the film is all about. If the music is a hit, the film will get a better opening.¡±

Adds Selvaraghavan, ¡°Once the promos and songs of Aayirathil Oruvan appeared on television, the sales of the audio doubled. GV Prakash has done a wonderful job and after the release, the audio will become even more popular.¡± Industry pundits are expecting Asal, which boasts of the Ajith-Bharadwaj-Saran combination, to have a record opening as the trio¡¯s earlier projects such as Kadhal Mannan, Amarkalam and Attagasam had superhit music. Ajith¡¯s films also have the backing of his fans who ensure an opening for them! Similarly, Goa could prove to be third-time lucky for cousins Venkat Prabhu and Yuvan Shankar Raja, whose earlier projects Chennai-28 and Saroja were chartbusters.

However, the most eagerly awaited audio is that of Vinnaithaandi Varuvaya, AR Rahman¡¯s first Tamil film album after he got the Oscars last year. Some music shops in Chennai have made provisions for advance booking for the audio of the film! There is also some curiosity factor as after parting ways with Harris Jayaraj, Gautham Menon is pairing with ARR for the first time. After all, the Gautham-Harris combo was the third in terms of total sales of Tamil film albums after the Mani Ratnam-ARR and Shankar-ARR combinations. The controversy over the leak of the song Hosaana... has also created a stir among fans. In short, Kollywood music lovers are in for a big treat this January. Play on...

For a music director, there cannot be a better birthday present than an album release! For Oscar winner A R Rahman, the audio release of his Vinnaithaandi Varuvaayaa (VTV) — slated for launch next week — will be his first Tamil film after more than a year!

The Gautham Menon-directed film, which features Simbu and Trisha in lead roles, has raised a lot of expectations as it’s the first time that the filmmaker has teamed up with Rahman. With one of the songs (Hosanna ... ) already out on the Internet, expectations continue to soar.

2010 is a crucial year for the music composer as he needs to meet the world’s expectation, post his phenomenal fame for his score for the award-winning Slumdog Millionaire. This year, he’s expected to have three big releases —VTV, Raavan and Endhiran — apart from his international projects. Then, there’ll also be the Hindi version of Sivaji and a Telugu flick titled Puli.

The variety that he gets musically is something that Rahman loves. “I like working on both styles — a Slumdog Millionaire-type- of-film and say, a Jodha Akbar-type. They are two different styles in cinema and both of them need to be there,” he told CT in an interview earlier. Melody or mass, Rahman surely rules!

Some Comments that I saw in Amazon for one of A.R.Rahman's CD "Between Heaven and Earth".. These comments were by non-indians... Good to see that ppl are listening to our music...

Although I am a native American who grew up in Texas on Lightin' Hopkins and Ray Charles, with a diverse taste in music from Mozart to Bill Evans to Emmy Lou Harris, I now listen primarily to A.R. Rahman - and frankly have just about lost interst in any other music.
Rahman is the genius of melody and subtle percussion. His music has evolved out of India, but it also comes from what must be his personal enormous heart-felt love for all of life, humanity and God. His grasp of the eternal and the transcendental in melody will bring tears to your eyes and long lost feelings into your heart......

I don't remember how I even found this CD. I had never heard of A.R. Rahman but after sampling the music and reading the reviews I decided to buy it. What a revelation! The music is truly a timeless blend of eastern and western. It is at the same time powerful, sensual, deep, primitive, modern and melodic. Rahman blends primitive-sounding drums with lush orchestration and Indian and Chinese instruments. This is one CD of which I do not tire, even after I've had it on "repeat" in my CD player while I'm doing other things. Highly recommended....

Kamal Haasan and A R Rahman have been the greatest icons of Tamil film industry. But the entire tollywood remains flummoxed as the duo don’t get along with each other. Take a glimpse on Kamal Haasan’s films, barely couple of films– Indian and Thenali had A R Rahman scoring music.

Kamal Haasan opted for Shankar-Ehasan-Loy to score music for Aalavandhan while his magnum opus Dasavatharam had Bollywood’s Himesh Reshammiya. Well with Unnai Pol Oruvan, he introduced his elder daughter Shruthi Haasan to score music and she’ll wear the same cap for his upcoming flick Yaavarum Kelir.

Kamal Haasan’s international project 19 Steps was supposed to have A R Rahman. But then, the project was shelved for unknown reasons.

Soon after Rahman won the Oscars I saw a couple of interviews of Kamal in IBN and some other news channel and he detailed about his liking and relationship with Rahman.

Things he said

* He was and is a great admirer and follower of Raja and called him his brother.

* He never had great regard for Rahman initially but Rahman slowly changed this by providing ground breaking stuff time and again. Yes, it took time but now he adores Rahman and thinks he is a national treasure :D

* Talking about Rahman's best work he said he had a couple of songs composed for Marmayogi which he considers as Oscar worthy themselves :thumbsup:

* While working for Marmayogi he had to get used to Rahman's style of working and now both of them find it easy and comfortable to work with each other.

* He emphasized that he wasn't making these statements now that Rahman had won an Oscar but this is how he has felt for quite sometime now.

Hope this clears some of these doubts :)

Danny Boyle almost botched it. The Welsh director had bottled the mad razzle of Mumbai quite brilliantly in Slumdog Millionaire. He just had to cap it well.
As Jamal meets Latika at the Churchgate station in a climax that was inevitably Mumbai, everything was perfect - the release of tension, atmosphere of jubilation - except for the sound of joy.
"Rahman heard the song that I had put and said ‘Don't use this song. I have another song for you. Use it' and I said What!!!" Boyle recalled in an interview to a website.
Actually, it wasn't even a song; just a danceable instrumental piece. But he agreed to listen to the song that Allah Rakha Rahman had in mind. Looking back, Jai Ho is what defines the climax. Hell, it is the climax.
Critics don't consider Jai Ho as his best work but they are barking up the tree and missing the woods. The reality is that Jai Ho is important for a variety of reasons that make Rahman one of the most influential musicians on the planet. And most of the reasons are in that song.
The song itself can be thought of as a Rahman glide note that joins three worlds: music of the West, East and computer technology. The rousing victory song set in A Minor reminds many people of Mozart's 40th Symphony but the melodic line of Jai Ho runs closer to the Austrian legend's Piano Sonata 8. One is tempted to think of it as a subconscious hat-tip from the Mozart of Madras to the Dear Departed.
Beyond the hat-tip though, it is Rahman's interpretation of the euphoric mood of the moment. The song loops in the enthusiasm of disco, rawness of world music, slick synthesizer runs and all of these buoy the soaring vocals. Superb sound engineering is the final touch that creates a song that is as much at home in an Indian music competition as much as it is in an Oscar ceremony.
The success of Slumdog Millionaire may have left everyone surprised but it is the result of a concerted effort. Rahman did the music for a Chinese film Warriors of Heaven and Earth in 2003. Then, he did the musical Bombay Dreams with Andrew Lloyd Webber in 2004.
He did the score for Lord of the Rings in 2007 and he did Raga's Dance for the violinist Vanessa Mae in 2008. In 2009, he did the music for a Hollywood film Couple's Retreat.
If this was merely another Indian composer trying to make it in the West it wouldn't be a big deal. It is much bigger. Rahman is trying to create sound that fuses the music of East and West. To do this, he has started his own KM music conservatory, a school of music as it were.
He also has his own label KM Musiq to produce the sort of music that he thinks should be out there. "I want to think like an entrepreneur not an employee. Attempts to create a synthesis of the music of West and the East were made in the past but did not last because that form wasn't institutionalised. I want to do that," says Rahman.
The tea leaves augur well. "Rahman has been trying to do this East-West bridge for a very long time. Bombay Dreams was the first time he made such an attempt. If anyone can, he can," says Vice-President at SaReGaMa, Atul Churamani.
Rahman was destined to cross boundaries. He was a child prodigy. A Tehelka article on him talks about one such instance. When Rahman was a kid, his father took him to a music director called Sudarshan. "I hear your child can play anything. Let's see if you can play this," he said and played a challenging piece. He then covered the harmonium keys with a veshti and gave it to the child. Rahman played the composition pitch perfect. An overwhelmed Sudarshan embraced the boy.
Maybe Rahman could have become a great Carnatic musician, maybe a great western classical virtuoso. A world of possibilities ended when his father passed away and the family went through some very hard times.
He had to record music for a fee to help feed his family. He played for television shows. He travelled with different music troupes all over South India. The genius could have remained a journeyman.
A scholarship to Trinity College of Music at Oxford in changed everything. In 1987, he returned from Oxford and by 1992, he had stunned the world with the soundtrack of Roja.

Some 18 years ago, singer Unni Menon was given a call way past midnight, awoken in his slumber, and was told that accomplished director Mani Ratnam is recording songs for his new film and Menon¡¯s voice was required for one of those numbers. Who works at this hour, Menon asked himself. But due to the fact that the name involved was called Mani Ratnam, Menon freshened himself up and rushed up to the mentioned recording studio, where he saw a young composer calling the shots.

Mani Ratnam, who so often works with Maestro Ilayaraja, has discovered a new talent to associate with in the music department. Menon wondered continuously if this young guy- whose name is AR Rahman, could really live up to the humongous expectations of having to compose for a Mani Ratnam film. He was given the song lyrics, the tunes were discussed, and on the wee hours of that one day back in 1992, Menon recorded a song called ¡®Pudhu Vellai Mazhai¡¯ (A new white rain), and went back home, back to his slumber. The doubts that he had before recording the song existed even after that- he didn¡¯t think he had sung the catchiest of tunes. Little did he know, that when he went to sleep that day, just like lyrics of the song proclaims, he has witnessed a new white rain, that will reign the Indian music arena over the following two decades. All the uncertainties over the song that he had sung vanished into thin air as he listened to the final version of the song one day- and as he listened, he realized that this song is not catchy, but instead it makes the hair on the back of one¡¯s neck stand up and applaud.

That AR Rahman back then was 26 years old. Today, as

he turns 44, that white rain has poured down not only in Tamil Nadu, but up until on Hollywood¡¯s most famous stage- the Oscar stage. Rahman was the very first composer in Indian cinema history to win a National Award for his very first film, an award that he would go on to claim two more times. An honorary doctorate and a Padmashri, India¡¯s fourth highest civilian honor, are just a little peek into a mass collection of awards and applauds that this modest, humble, soft-spoken name with an ever present smile on his face has achieved in his career. That innocent smile never waned even as he stood next and around the best luminaries of Hollywood while collecting his piece of the biggest cinema cherry in the world, nor did it wane as he stood flanked by beautiful girls in Akon¡¯s Beautiful Girls music video.

What is so special about his music, some may ask. Who introduced Hariharan and Shankar Mahadevan, two of the most famous, most accomplished male singers in the industry today? Who made Hariharan sing ¡®Thamizha Thamizha¡¯ with such sensitivity? Who is it that managed to evoke the atmosphere of an unborn child who is going to be born into a world of chaos and uncertainty through Vellai Pookal? Who is it that managed to re-create a 50s and 60s atmosphere without sounding like direct throwback in Iruvar? Who is it that re-composed India¡¯s national anthem with such passion and ferocity? Who is it that made the whole nation re-kindle a long-buried Vande Matharam? AR Rahman is not only a good composer, he is a symbol- a symbol of a nation struggling to unleash itself from the strangling, rusting ropes of past differences and attempting to move forward as one, as one whole country. He is a symbol of passion, of the ultimate craftsmanship an artist could ever express with his own work. Above all, he is the perfect symbol of an artist, a celebrity. A man who has the talent to put the world at his awe, but has the humility to not take all the credit for his achievements. A man who has the calmness to rise above petty differences and embrace goodwill as his nature, and has that smile that shows, without having to tell, that he loves what he is doing, that we love what he is doing, and God loves what he is doing.

Ever lost hope? Ever lost faith in goodness? Ever lost faith in the beauty of life? Ever lost faith in the impact of talent and artistry? Look up to AR Rahman.

Today as this man turns forty-four, there is no gift that we could possibly give him that would override 18 years of him showering us with gifts of music. But what we could do is to forget that he is forty-four, and make him immortal along with his music.

BBC Asian Network holds A.R Rahman day

The BBC Asian Network will dedicate a whole day of programming to the celebrated composer, A.R Rahman on Thursday 14th January.

The composer, who has had huge success with his soundtrack for British film 'Slumdog Millionaire', will be featured across most programmes throughout the day.

A.R Rahman first came to the attention of Western audiences with his film music for 'Elizabeth: The Golden Age' and stage shows 'Bombay Dreams' and' The Lord of the Rings', however, it is for 'Slumdog Millionaire' that the composer has received international acclaim. Since its release in January 2009, he has won several awards, including two Oscars, a Golden Globe, a BAFTA and is nominated for two Grammy Awards at the end of this month.

On A.R Rahman Day, the BBC Asian Network will be honouring this success, starting with Adil Ray on the Breakfast Show from 07:00. The celebration will climax with a big interview on the Gagan Grewal Show at 18:30, where the legend will be discussing his success at the Oscars in the midst of the Mumbai attacks, his meetings with the late Michael Jackson, his faith and much more.

Husain Husaini, Head of Programmes, BBC Asian Network, comments, "The BBC Asian Network has played A.R Rahman's brilliant music long before his recent fame in the West with Slumdog Millionaire. We have known for years that he creates some of the best music ever to come from India. We are delighted to have him on the station and to be able to celebrate his unique musical gifts across our programmes."

A day prior to the BBC Asian Network's special programming, Channel 4 will give 'Slumdog Millionaire' its UK terrestrial premiere at 21:00 (Wednesday 13th January).

It'd be a great day when ARR works with Speilberg.

I sometimes wonder what ARR would've done with James Cameron's Avatar. Those kinda movies demand a certain type of score, but ARR would've definitely put a fresh twist on it.:yes: while watching avatar I had the same thought.. The movie has scope for some indianised yet hollywood like background scores and ARR would have fit the bill perfectly :D

Arrahman: just returned after watching 'Dream On', a show performed by disabled Chinese people. Chennai had never seen anything like this before..they've kickstarted the tour from Chennai and will cover other Indian cities.....

Thanks to Dream On, China’s Disabled People’s Performing Art Troupe. They call themselves disabled but they left us the thought in us that they are specially-abled than us by their stunning performing arts which was purely mesmerizing the whole crowd for 2 hours.

I got a 500 rs ticket for the show. While the show was on, I thought I should have bought a 1000 rs ticket. Their performances were spectacular and splendid and it was worth paying that money. But while coming out of the show, everyone felt the love they had showered on every individual in the hall. A girl who was on her wheel chair and a guy who was blind, both Chinese, were performing and singing Rahmans "Jai Ho", “Chinna Chinna Aasai” and moreover "Vande Mataram" by heart in Tamil. We couldn’t escape from feeling their love and it was priceless. Money cannot be substituted for it. I came out spell bounded, got few cards of them and their autograph. I am glad I did them for this is an event for lifetime and they are the real heroes in life spreading love and compassion all over the world.

PUNE: Hindi film director Subhash Ghai revealed here on Sunday that the song ‘Jai Ho’ that won music director A.R. Rehman and lyricist Gulzar an Oscar was originally composed for his film Yuvraaj.

Mr. Ghai was speaking at an interactive session on music in cinema at the ongoing Pune International Film Festival (PIFF). “The words of the song were very poetic — Zareewale neele aasman ke tale... [Under the embroidered sky...] The poetry did not fit the character of Zayed Khan, on whom the song was to be shot. So I asked Gulzarji to compose another song.

“Then one night Rehman called me and said Danny Boyle was in a hurry and wanted a Hindi song at the end of his film. He asked me if he could give Boyle ‘Jai Ho.’ I told him to go ahead.”

Mr. Ghai said later one day Mr. Rehman called him and said the song had been nominated for the Oscars. “I told him not to say anything about the origin of the song. Now that it has won the award, I make this revelation with Rehman’s permission.”[/tscii:bb235d45c8]

Im totally aware of whats happening there because one of your countrys industrialists is now associated with us. Though I have not seen many Bollywood films, as I prefer scifi /technology driven films over love stories. However, I have listened to many compositions of AR Rahman. Hes my all-time favourite musician from India.

Steven Spielberg, one of the most successful Hollywood directors of all time, has said that he would like to work with Indian music maestro AR Rahman.

He was speaking to a popular English daily.

When he was asked about Rahman's music, he said, "I have heard interesting compositions of Rahman and would love to work with him in the near future."

Rahman won a double Oscar and one Golden Globe for his compositions in Danny Boyle's 'Slumdog Millionaire' last year.

Abhishek Bachchan starrer Delhi-6 has become the first Indian movie available for download on Apple iTunes.

The movie is available on the iTunes online store in the 'New and Noteworthy' section for $9.99 download-to-own.

"Launching Delhi-6, the complete film, on iTunes was a perfect fit as not only does the film appeal to all alike, but is another step in UTVs endeavour to set trends. We are extremely proud that Delhi-6 is the first Indian film on iTunes," Lokesh Dhar, vice president, UTV Motion Pictures, USA, said in a statement.

Co-produced by UTV Motion Pictures and Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra, it is directed by Mehra. Sonam Kapoor stars in the movie as the female lead.

Having released February 20 worldwide last year, it was a box office dud.

The movie has also been screened at the 66th Venice Film Festival, Bangkok International Film Festival and 29th Annual Hawaii International Film Festiva

A.R. Rahman to perform live in Sydney on Jan 16

In spite of the recent attacks on Indian students in Australia, music maestro A.R. Rahman's much awaited Sydney concert at the Parramatta Park on January 16 will be taking place as per schedule. Australia Network will broadcast this mega concert live across 44 nations.

Rahman will perform with 40 Indian musicians and Bollywood dancers on stage. High-impact lighting displays, choreographed moving video screens and audience interaction are among the other highlights of this musical extravaganza. The live concert is conducted as part of Vivacity and the 2010 Sydney Festival.

The A.R. Rahman concert, co-hosted by Australian cricketing legend Matthew Hayden and ABC presenter Miriam Corowa, is a free event supported by the New South Wales Government.

Hayden, in a statement issued by the Australian Embassy in Delhi, said, "I am honoured and thrilled to be a part of A.R. Rahman's unique outdoor extravaganza and the Sydney Festival. Rahman was born in Chennai, a city that I have come to love and a part of India that is very special to me for many reasons. I am excited that many Australians will be able to enjoy what millions of people around the world have come to love and appreciate- the incredible Mozart of Madras and the amazing Indian musicians and Bollywood dancers."

Australia Network will broadcast the entire event on Saturday January 16.

RAIN did not spoil the musical parade of Indian superstar A.R. Rahman as he thrilled tens of thousands of people in his concert extravaganza at a packed Parramatta Park.

Part of the Sydney Festival, the free concert had everything from Bollywood jive, hip hop-influenced grooves and traditional Indian sounds as (see photos here) Rahman and his entourage of colourful dancers captivated the crowd from start to finish on Saturday night.

That finish to the two and a half hour production came in the form of crowd favourite `Jai ho¡¯, which saw fireworks light the sky while concert-goers danced and chanted the chorus.

The Slumdog Millionaire composer addressed the crowd before the finale on what he had earlier in the night called ``one of the most historic concerts of my life¡¯¡¯.

``Thank you for being part of change,¡¯¡¯ he said, a reference to his wish to end the attacks against Indian students in Victoria.

``I want all of you guys staying here to bless the children of India with love.¡¯¡¯

Rahman also asked the crowd to spare a thought for the victims of the Haiti earthquake.

``Life is just like that. Anything can happen,¡¯¡¯ he said.

``So Jai ho, God bless you all.¡¯¡¯

They were words of wisdom to his adoring crowd, (see photos here) mostly expats from the subcontinent who came from across Sydney and interstate.

The crowd stretched over 500 metres through a tree-lined corridor in the park, many families seated on picnic rugs.

Most people stayed to the end of the concert, albeit some with umbrellas. Black clouds loomed overhead and light rain fell a couple of times but few revellers left early.

Former Australian cricket captain Steve Waugh commented on the mammoth crowd in his welcome speech before the concert.

``I¡¯ve never seen so many Indian people here, it reminds me when I was in Calcutta,¡¯¡¯ he told concert-goers.

He asked Australians to embrace all people who come to their country, and called Rahman ``the Sachin Tendulkar of music¡¯¡¯.

A spokesperson for NSW Police said there had been no reports of major incidents on the night.
