They don't show it much often on tv. Plus Sivakumar isn't exactly the most interesting actor to watch. That and thappu thaaLangaL are two Rajini movies on my list for a long time.
Sari seekkiram poll-ai aarambinga. I can't wait to ensure a Thalapathi landslide.

Subjective of course
I thing 2nd standard padikkumbodhunnu ninaikkiREn. I was involved in a fistfight in defence of Kamal against a Rajini fan classmate. Anjali range-ku katti puraNdu saNdai. I don't even recall what Rajini film I had watched earlier than that. But all I remember was that he started with some unwarranted comments about Satya. I take it that my repartee about PaNakkAran was too good for him to respond in the verbal plane after that.
After losing the left pocket of my school uniform and getting into trouble at home (inimE yaarum naan kaLappaNiyila eedupadalainnu sollakkoodaadhu) I naturally chanelled my ennoyance towards Rajini. An elder cousin and a sort of preceptor of Kamal-fanness goes, fanned my misgivings gleefully and assured me Rajini was incapable of impressing.
But I remembered being readily impressed by Thalapadhi. Felt a little guilty about liking it. "They changed the ending" my cousin said in way of mutual pacification. "Only our man will dare die on screen."
It was much later that I saw AvargaL and other older performances of Rajini. By the time I enjoyed Dhalapathi performance for what it was. More on that as this thread expands.
Just wanted to first log the personal significance of Dhalapathi, because reasoning is usually a pretence that follows rather than preceeds what are inexplicably instinctive personal preferences.

Nerd, mullum malarum is in everyones list but will it be everyones #1?
I don't think so
I'd also be disappointed if both baasha and annamaalai make it. One of them is enough to represent the degeneration of rajni as a mere star .
Degeneration ellAm periya vaarthai. Mohana thillAna aadalainnA, NagalingamA aada mudiyum ?

I'd suggest Padkikkadhavan instead of Annamalai(like for like but in a different period) and AvargaL to represent his KB-Antagonist phase)

My ranking of the above list:
1. Mullum Malarum - Kaali - Scorching.
2. Thalapathy - Surya - Fiery
3. Johnny - Vidyasagar/Johnny - Mesmerising
4. Thillu Mullu - AAK Indhiran/Chandhiran - rib-tickling
5. Netrikkan - Chakravarthy - Astounding.
6. Aval Appadithan - Thyagu - Guilty pleasure.
7. Thambikku entha ooru - Balu - fun
8. Annamalai - Annamalai - Noble
9. Batsha - Manick Batsha - Galant
10. Guru Sishyan - Guru - Goofy
Edit. I think Guru's name is Raja. Rajini will rank alongside NT for having most roles with the name Raja (no thanks to Balaji's obsession with that name).

1. avaL appadith thaan - rajni's villainism deserves no second place.
2. Johnny - pinnacle for dialogue-less emoting
3. MuLLum malarum - very unique. mithun didn't shine even as half as rajni did.
4. ThaLapathi - noteworthy
5. NetrikkaN chakravarthy - A reality
6. Baasha - Entertaining
7. Thillu mullu - Good try for comedy. can do better.
8. Thambikku endha ooru - melodramatic.
9. Guru Sishyan - okei... I can manage few smiles.
10. Annamalai - kaathula poo, but baasha mathiri interesting-a sutha therila

I agree with PR that personal preference is the precursor to supporting logic. However, it is possible to be objective, and the illustration is that if I went my personal preference, I wouldnt have voted for kALi. I would have....
A determined non-cinema watcher, that's what I was. Every excursion to a movie planned by my buff of a father would be met with last minute tactical retreat to the bathroom by yours truly, in an attempt to delay, and therefore disintegrate the plans. This resulted in often being dumped next door with a friendly religious, principled non-cinema watcher of a neighbour while the rest of the family continued their normal pursuit of entertainment.
This was to change. I remember the day. The neighbour having retired to his native place, that day I didnt have a choice but to accompany the rest of the family to the movie hall. Not to worry. I still had my doosra. Go to sleep as soon as you settle down with the pop corn in the seat. Only, I couldnt, as a particularly charismatic young man stole a car, and indulged in a thrilling chase, orchestrated expertly by a genius in the background, of whose talent I'd only learn in the following years much later. The stylish youngster traversed hilly roads, changed the nameplates, spray painted the car to a groovy colour, and held up a tape recorder to record folksy songs by plantation workers. I was hooked. Ostensibly, it was the man on screen who hooked me in. A later viewing on TV served the realisation that the man playing the background score was equally responsible for it but thats another story for another time.
As Johnny went about his cons, and Vidyasagar endeared himself with his lazy, understated langour, my fascination grew. and Johnny was the first movie I 'watched' in a theater, though had been in the theatre for many movies before.
Such was the impact of Johnny that I saw Ranga many times in theatre. Enough said. There cannot be a better endorsement for that character of Rajni.
I voted for kALi.

I really like this list. It's a fair list. Not one film where you can say I hate it, unless, of course, you are SP. But that's besides the point.
Watched First part of MM yesterday. Particularly impressive was how in the first (Nerd mentioned this) few scenes, the director quickly established Kali's character.
The headlight breaking - Vengeful, particular his hatred towards the rich as experienced during childhood (his sister teased with food by rich kids). Heck the entire film is a result of his childhood trauma. Poverty, helplessness and forced sense of independence
The Old man shouldering - That he is loving and caring. He's there if you are in need. Unless you are rich, or his boss.
The boat ride - His irreverance, and attitude towards women. He teases and mildly threatens "Payapulla"'s wife, whom he may or not know is having affair with VAM.
Finally, his first scene (as adult) with sister. Sees strangers, and sister asks him to help them out. Get a job. And he offers, "Appadiyee, Valli, paavam antha ponnukku oru mappilai paarthu kalyanam pannikuvom." Shoba brightens up, he mocks scolds her, then she adds,""Pavam-ne, athu oru veguli". He counters "Neeyee veguli", then pats his sisters head and agrees to help. Here we see his attachment to his sister.
So, that sort of rounds up his character. A guy, especially if you had grown up in rural area (plantation in my case) you may have seen, met or know. Reminds me of an uncle of mine actually.

i voted for Dhalabadhi -- all the way.....too good to be true 8-) .......and its not that i liked dhalabadhi all of a sudden, infact hated it when i watched it first (feeling sore abt Guna's loss those days).......but since then, revisited dhalabadhi multiple times earnestly trying to understand the nuances of its writing, ferfarmanses and finally arrived at this conclusion.....
much like PR, i was a big kamal fan in 80's and early 90's so my knowledge of rajini's 80's movies is almost nil.......his 70's movies are too good to be missed, hence i visited them in 90's......from 90's, since thalaivar took over the 'mandil' of being rajini's asthana MD, watched all movies from muthu to sivaji on screen except for non-arr movies ofcourse.......so my conclusion may not contain rajini's complete oeuvre......... :)

Day 2 campaign.
Okay, now let's move on to the scenes after the ones I mentioned.
Pivotal is the first encounter with Sarath Babu, the engineer later reffered to by Kali as Law Point (Laa Pahyint). Kali uses the company tram to transport people in need. It's basically against the company law and the engineer notices it. Kali who's having fun chatting with them, gets his allakai Payapulla to help get Fadafat Jayaletchumi and his mom job. Then Sarath butts in and asks what's happening. Kali says, the tram is full and asks him to wait for the next round. Sarath identifies himself and orders Kali to get those people off.
First, Kali stiffens, shocked that the authority is there. Then he pleads with him, "Sar, avungga hospital pogununa pattu pathunanju kilometre nadakkanum, sar!" Sarath refuses to budge. All fired up, really bustling with volcanic discharge in him, Kali asks the people people to get down. This time he is not that nice, "Eranggungga! Yeranggi Tolaingga!!!" Clearly the anger is aimed at the engineer. From a chatty mood, teasing the passengers and payapulla ("Athu eppadi ponnungga pathi pesuna unakku oru "ithu" varuthu?"), to the shock seeing his new boss, to the pleading, and the final almost outburst that is aimed at the boss he barely knew for a single minute, Rajini is in full performance mode here. Totally involved in that scene.
Next we get to see the engineer quering his supervisor about Kali, and the supervisor gives a totally different picture. For example, he cites that Kali is always frollicking with young girls, when we get to see the actual picture of him chatting some really old ladies. And of course, the biggest lie that Kali does not take care of his sister and let her starve. This leads to the next best scene....

Campaign day 2 pt 2.
Mullum Malarum.
Now, anything you say to anyone in workplace will get out somehow. So, the supervisor's remark did reach to Kali. How.
Well, we get to see a little girl running to Valli (Shoba) and tells her that Kali is beating up someone. Of course, this is not the first time ever someone is running to her to tell her that her brother has been a bad boy.
Then, we become a distant spectator of what happen to be a nasty beating dished out by our beloved Kaali, as we see him ceaselessly trashing, kicking the lying scumbag supervisor setting free cloud of dust from earth which has not given up the supervisor yet. In short while, Kali's friend manages to dislodge his bare foot off the supervisor's derrier and off they drags him back home, with the still protesting raging Kali adjusting his lunggi, flicking his unruly hair back to its place, very much looking like a man who has only won half the battle and anytime wouldn't mind kicking his own friend's rear just for stopping the trashfare.
Back at home, the friends informs Valli that he has beaten up the supervisor, and Kali who was washing his face and hands (Mani borrowed this scene for Dalpathi), Kali explodes once again, "Naanum en tanggachiyum inngey anaathaiyaam vanthom...illanu sollala. (and something about begging, don't remember the line)...Naan enna avan aattha kittayaa sooru keetten..." then he breaks, voice cracking, "athukooda paravaaladdaa...naan en tanggachiya pattinipootenaaaa....athutaanda ennaalaa taanggamudiyila..." then rage sets in and this time you know that he means it, which sort of bothers Valli a bit when he says, "Ennaikkachum naan en tanggachiya patinipooteynnaa, annaikku intha Kaali settanaala irukkum!!"
Again, full blast of emotional discharge. And that fight...man, that fight, I really pity the guy played the supervisor. How Rajini summoned up enough rage to really kick the man's butt with that ferocity beats me. And when he breaks down, because this raging bull was hurt by the remark that he didn't care for his sibling, didn't bother about her needs. If that didn't look real, as followed by vow that he'd rather die than not to protect that rose, I don't know what is.
More later.

One MM scene which I like a lot. Sure Groucho will write about it. The scene after his loses his hand, VAM and others console him. They try to say something of the effect that they will take care of him. They seem to mean in all earnest. Rajini just explodes, unable to bear going from top-dog to object of pity. Asserts his authority with a roar of anger that has them all taking aback. In a moment he cools down and understands they meant well and in a generous, soft and big-brotherly tone dismisses them.
Beautiful expression, the fluency of the change is to be seen to be believed.

And the whole sequence where he understands his reality is wonderful.
Two among them are
1.Showing his wish to marry the girl when his sister proposes the idea to him...sort of "no denial mode"
2.When the heroine comes in when he wears his pant..
The scene where he first meets his sister after losing his hand...
In a way very much similar to "nalal sivam" charecter where the guy who was once a hero, nderstands the reality( "munna maadhiri irundha balti adichu sanda potrukalam") and shifts to a humourous man from being a angry hero.
but here he stays as a charecter and never gives up his ego even after understanding the reality.

One thing that has always struck me in 'muLLum malarum' is the "unequal" relationship shared by Kaali and Valli. There is a recurring moment in the film where the camera zooms in on Valli's face with the kottu from the street show they did as kids playing in the background. These moments are handled in a manner to suggest some guilt on Valli's part and also her unceasing realisation that she is indebted to her brother in so many ways, which she finds even a bit disconcerting. This is a brilliant move to say the least.

The look on her face when Kali says, "athu Kaali settha naala irukkum"
The realisation that the brother has done maruthani for her the night before. That is not a pleased or proud look on her face!
The defiance by personally sending food to Sarath's place. You are right equa, its unequa.

Anyway, last post for today:
Mullum Malarum
Campaign day 2 pt 3.
And so Kali is human after all. He has needs too, and this time he needs a shave. While shaving (totally outdoor event) the busy body barber notes that Valli is at about marrying age and start suggesting potential grooms. Basically one candidate was more disastrous than the other. One was literally “Mookum Muzhiyumaairuppan”. Thank god Kali must have been in good mood. When the barbers goes on to suggest the next knucklehead ("padichi engga oorlaaaa....) he just merely allowed the shaving blade to touch its owners neck. And then, comes engineer’s assistant saying that the boss wants to see Kali. The not so amused Kali, having had just been suggested misfits to marry his beloved sister, asks him to wait while the barber finishes the hirsute removing ritual. Nope, says the assistant, engineer wants him now.
Next scene we see Kali, arms folded, face beaming with arrogance, and half lathered in foam.
Engineer: Enna ithu?
Kaali: Neenggathaan udaney vara sonnenggalaamee.
Annoyed, engineer tells him off, saying that what he did to the supervisor was uncalled for and he is letting Kali off this time with a warning…and again Kali protests, but the boss is not having any of his excuse. Kali is defeated again.
Engineer: Pogum poothu mugattai kazhuvittu poo.
Kaali: (looks at the assistant, and smacks the back of the feller's head  – again anger at the boss directed elsewhere).
This is the second confrontation with his boss, Mr Engineer and Law Point. You know that from now on, Kali's ego has got the better of him and he is in no way going to make peace with his boss. Especially not when things get a bit personal.
Here, we get to see a bit of comic moment when Rajini deals with the nosey barber, clearly annoyed with the suggestion, and he wants something more for his sister...something that he is clearly about to disregard because of his ego. A damage he would almost wreck upon his sister much later. But that is later...till then...

Surya doesn't know where Deva is taking him. A mother and a newborn child. The moment he realizes he is in Ramana's house, a change in his expression comes over. His first reaction is one of gnawing guilt. He can't stand the piercing gaze of the woman he has widowed. Deva being the loving fool that he is makes things worse.
He gives aks Surya to hold the Baby. The discomfort is writ large on his face. He feels like a worm. Deva prattles on about his greatness and says "idhu Surya...nee enna kEttalum tharuvaan".
"Really ? the child/mother seem to ask in prickly unison". Nothing makes one feel smaller than undeserved praise at an inappropriate time.Surya cringes, the infant seems imright possibly heavy to him, he holds with an artificial teflonness. The baby is taken from his hands, he never actively held it in the first place. The world is unaware. The one aware gazes at him causing inexplicable pain.
His world till then had been simple. He lived in an all earnestness of being right and fearless. All that changes forever in that scene.
Extraordinary acting by Rajini. Not a word spoken but eloquent beyond measure.

Yeah, this piece (http://tfmmagazine.mayyam.com/hub/viewtopic.php?p=1631132#1631132). appappO idhu mAdhiri oru salasalappa ERpaduththa vENdiyadhu dhAn. The crux of the resistance is I'm a bit uncomfortable with seeing Rajini as this "once a serious actor who strayed away in a different direction."
And regarding pitting 'guru sishyan' against 'thillu mullu,' the idea is that the former has much more of Rajini's comic persona than the latter. In fact, the latter is a bit of a non-starter on that front (though it is in itself a hilarious performance). It is like Rajini playing the lead role in a sabha stage play. I guess I'm not the right person to talk about 'thambikku endha Uru.' (I'm still a young, you see.) I don't recall seeing it in one piece at all, and at any rate, it never made so much of an impression during my growing-up years. On the other hand, 'guru sishyan' is a personal favourite (and certainly Rajini's best comic turn) and I remember enjoying 'rAjAdhi rAja' a lot too.

Now, I think someone must write about the likes of 'guru sishyan' and 'rajAdhi rAja' so as to offer a corrective of sorts.
I remeber a half-post of yours once on why Guru Sishyan is the Rajini comedy to be remembered ahead of Thillu Mullu. adhai appidiyE expand, elaborate, elucidate with examples, padam varaindhu baagangaL kuRiththu post paNNalaamE.
Any other capable actor (in terms of comic timing) could have played it and it'd not have made so much of a difference.
equa
ennada solraarnu ninachittu irunthen..
None could have matched the Guru Sishyam comedy performance and it has written Rajni special all over it.. whereas any good comedy actor could have pulled it off in Thillumullu.. In that sense Guru Sishyam scores... right?
I still think no one could have done it better than Rajini in ThilluMullu. but I think I will agree to the point you are making.. Good analysis

PR  Nice analysis of that scene. Powerful scene that one. Right after the baby is taken off his hand, he looks at the very part of him that has taken Ramana's life. Various scenes he'd be looking at his hand, "Kaiyya paarungga, ellam ratta karai" he tells Jai Shankar. Beautiful scene, wonderful performance.

[tscii:59a85882e6]Oh great, Dalphathy leading now. Post panna panna antha side eeruthu. Sari viduvom...end of the day, victory goes to Rajini.
Anyway I actually got the sequences all wrong. The second brush with the engineer actually took place after this scene. A memorable scene, indeed.
Mullum Malarum Campaign
Day 3
The Dance
So, there he was, Kaali and his own group of useless pals, hanger ons, misfits, at a roadside tea stall. And its not tea that Kali had just drank. He is obviously drunk as a skunk and is engaged in one of the favourite topic for conversation – bitching about the engineer, or Law Point.
Lo and behold, in comes a group of unsuspecting players of Nadhaswaram and Melam….and they couldn’t have picked up worst day, time and location. Kali stops them and asks where they are going…they say they are going to the supervisor’s sister’s wedding and we learn that the engineer is presiding over the wedding.
Kali: Namma oorukaarangga ellam sutta kabothingga.
Allakai: Yeenee?
Kali: Toolu konjam vellaiyaa (the reason that engineer is popular for him) irukka koodathu avvan veellaikaarannu nenekkirangga
Saying that he erupts in laughter….the other laughs along with him…he stops them, they stop, and seeing the minions have stopped laughing, he continues laughing, and they do the same. A silly show of power in his side. Meanwhile, the Nadhaswaram gosti moves…
Kali: Ennane avasaram?
Nadaswaram: Mugurthathukku neeramachu. Avanngga kaattiruppangga.
Kali: Irukkatum, yeavan veenaannu sonna. Nalla Naal athuvumaa, inggeyum rendu tattu tattiddu ponnga…(pammufies) Vasingga samy (no response, tries again) vaasingga samy (no deal, its Kali time) VassinggaDA DEY!”
What transpires will go into the anal of the global film industry as one of the worst dances from this side of hemisphere. But it is a dance of a booze head; a man drunk with his own miniscule power with army of knuckleheads looking on admiringly as he moves his hips, throws his hand around moving from one end of the bench to the other, a dance that has to be to be seen to be believed. I truly believe dance master Sundaram carefully shielded this piece of monstrosity from his growing sons.
In this scene, we see Rajini again demonstrating his range, realistically looking drunk, very unpredictable (as we learn more later) and soaking up very the respect that he gets from the allakais and the way he sits on the stall bench like a king and later not realising he was making fool of himself doing that unco-ordinated shuffle that he thinks is dance. Again, Rajini was totally in character here. :D [/tscii:59a85882e6]

I see it like this. My gen folks have seen MM way earlier and chances are they have seen it many times since on VHS, TV, later VCD/DVD, streaming. But younger gen having had missed it out then, would remember Talabathi better. Also no thanks to the possibility that Surya's exploit are screened more on small screen than that of Kali's.
By the way, CR, VAM's role is quiet meaty and risky, if you ask me. He has affair with Mayandi (Kaali's alakkai) wife and later is asked by the ego-blinded Kali to marry his own sister!!!! His last scene was pretty scary....you wouldn't want to see your beloved comedian under Kali's foot...literally, don't you? :(

Giraftaar. Rajni eats up Amitap Pachan in their scenes together. It is a stupid movie and stupid roles for both of them but screen presence, screen presence-nu oNNu solvAingaLE...adhula Pachan falls behind Rajini here. Avar hindila nadikkara orE kAraNathukkAga, people place him above Rajni.

Statement 1: Acting talend (Rajini) > Acting talend (Amitabh)
Statement 2: Coolness (Rajini) < Coolness (Amitabh)
Do you wish to disagree with and/or qualify either of these statements ?

Let us make just peak comparisons
For instance there are several sequences in thaLabadhi which are so natural that I can't quite see Amitabh doing them even half as well.
What are the 'acclaimed' performances of Amitabh ? I am strictly Manmohan Desai.

Amitji is quite affected in his non-cool performances. Two of his performances I liked wee anand and zanjeer - basically, angst ridden ones. But nothing that rajni can't do. Comedy attempts of pachan unsagikkable.
80's masalas - bad, though rajni remade some of them. Still, khuddar vs padikkadhavan - same role - rajni way ahead.
Art attempts of 90's and 00's - that's when I dropped out of pachan fandom :-)
My gold std for rajni - ketta paya sir avan, rendu kai rendu kaal illainaalum, en thangchida - pachan can't even imagine doing that.

I have seen all the movies of Amitji mentioned here (Anand, zanjeer, don, black, khuddar etc). Save for Billa Vs Don, Rajini is a far superior actor than Amitji and he is 100 times cooler than Amitji. Netrikkan Chakravarthy ellAm sathiyamaa varaadhu Amitjikku. Comedy pathi naan pEsa vENdiyadhillai-nu ninaikkiREn. Also Amitji fails miserably in emotional scenes too. (Bllack was OK). Amitji's strenghth - roles like Deewar and Rajini can do better (though he was not as good as Amitji in Thee)

Plum,
But some of these original Bachchan films (actually from the '70s) are so good and the respective Rajini remakes are so bad (or in some cases strictly average). The worst case is something like a Mr. Bharath. Is there really *anything* (including Rajini) in that film that does anything close to justice to Trishul? What a pa-the-tic film! That said, I do agree withyou that Bachchan really got tacky in the '80s.
Post hrishikesh mukherjee and then post deewar, pachan has only been hamming in different forms.

It is regarding the post 2000 roles that Amitabh has been doing that I feel envious (i..e for Rajini). If only Rajini had the chance he would have aced many of them.
btw Plum, to be contrasted against the conspicuous absence of this 'if only' feeling about bharathar & co.
Overall though I feel Rajini is a 'natural'. There are even parts of Nallavanukku Nallavan where Amitabh will struggle.

Trishul vs bharath - poor remake, rajni nowhere near but bharath is so different a character from the original. Worse was sv sekar for sasi kapoor . I don't even want to compare - it is a totally different animal in tamil.(Telugu remakela sobhan babu - avar satyarajke appa maadhiri irupparu )
Thee vs deewar and don vs billa - pachan wins. Granted.
Rest - nothing to choose.
Amar akbar vs telugu version - ok rajni did the khanna role there so can't compare but pachan comedy sucks so...
Panakkaaran vs laaawaris and halal vs velaikaran - nothing to choose. If anything, rajni is better

Halaal-la pachan unintentionally funny in almost all the scenes. Rajini was pretty good in vELaikkAran. Laawaris ellAm very very pathetic-nga. Panakkaran, though not a remarkably better remake, Rajini was much much better than Pachan.

I couldnt agree with you more on the point of Rajini being a 'Natural' - A mood creation - he achieves with just a slight shift in the facial expressions. He is so light weight when it comes to that - no need for anything spectacular - just pure minimalism - indicates some inborn talent. Even in the height of masala - he brought some effortless ease in some scenes of 'Ejaman' - the panchayat scenes - vegu yadhaartham and done in a very easy manner. A movie of his that I am unable to dislodge from my memory is 'Engeyo kaetta kural' - He stands out tall along with Delhi Ganesh in that movie. At the cost of inciting a flame war - let me spell out my long held notion - Kamal has to put in a 'lot of conscious effort' to appear natural and casual while Rajini the actor can slide into some roles with an effortless ease. Kamal realised this and made sure that he wrote more 'effort based' roles for himself to win over the crowd and applause and to his delight Rajini never aspired for those 'additional effort roles' and hence the statement 'avar thottadhai naan thodalai'. Even recently I was in awe of Rajini in Aval appadiththaan and 'thappu thaalangaL' - very complex roles these (Rajini gets slapped by Sripriya in AA and in the next scene he has to have a poker faced stoidity that made me go wow) and yet done with the least amount of fuss - at no point was there a statement 'Look I'm Acting' - which any other actor would have done these days. Even Jhonny - Mahendran and Rajini's focus on just letting the characters 'be' instead of screaming for 'good acting' recognition by the invisible audience watching the movie made every moment of the movie a 'special actor's moment' and that the way how it is done dudes.

Halal Amitabh comedy attempt. Unselects himself.
No one understood the dynamics of remodeling acting to the masala format better than Rajini. It was a virtuoso magic that he did by fusing elements of puttanna kanagaL school of natural performance with purest unabashedly honest masala ham to perfection.
