Srilekha Parthasarathy (SP), Karthik, and Tippu conversed with HJ. SP interrupted whenever Karthik had reasonable queries!
HJ's comments:
1) Hardly five out of 1000 become singers unlike doctors and engineers.
2) MinnalE was his official first, although Majnu also was composed at the same time.
3) Vaseegara was attempted because he wanted to do something different and make a mark quickly (This was to a SP observation that the number was imitated by a number of others later).
4) Making a good song is not enough, the song should have a spark that would make the listener wat to listen to it again.
5) He generally takes praise casually but the one by Subbudu is very important to him (Subbudu, it seems praised him for his album minnale and said that it was the album of that year. DUH!).
6) Karthik praised him for his amazing strings in the second interlude of Poove vAi pEsum pOdhu but before HJ could explain why he is majorly interested in strings (Karthik's question) SP duly interrupted and spoiled.
7) Tippu said his MinnalE was western, subsequent numbers were largely folk, so what is it he is doing different for Anniyan? Tippu said he had heard that HJ had worked with about 60 musicians and doing a carnatic number for Anniyan. HJ said he was doing a thiagraja keerthanai (IIRC) and composed with 60 musicians in NAttai rAgam. Two songs are carnatic based and they have come out well.
8) He likes nAttai and like everybody else KalyAni also but he would like to make the music listenable and not purely carnatic, since he is concerned how his songs will be absorbed by listeners.
9) When he composes a number he is always worried about its impact (how it will be received) so he keeps polishing it a number of times. Usually he listens about forty or fifty times that by the time it is finally OK-ed he is really fed up listening to the songs.
10) He likes soothing music, only acoustic and not electronic. In particular he is not in favor of the electric guitar.
I will write more later. I may also edit some of the above.
