Malayalam film veteran Murali passes away
Thiruvananthapuram, Aug 6 (IANS) National best actor award winner and veteran Malayalam actor Murali died at a private hospital here Thursday night. He was 55.
Murali was admitted to hospital Wednesday following breathing problems and liver complaints. He suffered a cardiac arrest.
In recent times, Malayalam filmdom has lost veteran film director Lohithadas (in June) and last month character actor Rajan P. Dev also died.
Murali was appointed chairman of the Sangeetha Nataka Academy which has its headquarters in Trissur, soon after the present V.S. Achuthanandan government assumed office in 2006.
He has acted in more than 200 Malayalam and a few Tamil movies in a film career that began in the early 80s.
Murali, who hails from Kollam, entered Malayalam films after a promising stint in theatre.
After finishing his degree in law, he worked in the health department and later at the Kerala University. But acting is what beckoned him, and he quit his job and plunged into a full-time acting career.
Murali portrayed several roles. His greatest asset was his voice.
Murali had won the Kerala State Film Award for best actor twice and a national award for best actor in 2002 for the film 'Neythukaran' directed by Priyanandanan, which also won him his second state best actor award.
Some of his other notable films include 'Nee Ethra Dhanya', 'Dhanam', 'The King', 'Veeralippattu', 'Achan Kombathu Amma Varambathu', 'Meenamasathile Sooryan', 'Swarnam', and 'The Truth'.
His closeness with the Communist Party fo India-Marxist saw him being fielded by the party in the 1999 Lok Sabha polls from Alappuzha, but he lost to Congress veteran V.M. Sudheeran.
Soon after the CPI-M backed Kairali TV channel was launched in the late 90s, Murali was a member of the director board that ran the channel.

“He was a sincere artist, a loyal friend and an honest soul! From Kamal Haasan, Mani Ratnam and Suhasini, everyone who knew him liked him,”
As soon as Kamal Haasan got the news of the death, he went over to Venkatesh’s home. “He was shocked. ‘I just watched the scenes in which we worked together for ‘Michael Madhana Kama Rajan,’ this morning,’ he kept saying.”
“Venkatesh admired Kamal immensely. ‘If Venkatesh knows you are here, he might sit up even now,’ we told Kamal. However crazy and wishful the thought, only if it had come true!” Balaji sighs.

When Venkatesh asks Nasser to "edhavdhu podunga boss" while hanging upside down on a tree outside the cliff-top house a few feet below a similarly airborne Nasser, the latter throws a handkerchief he just wiped his nose with. Looks like the Big Boss up there did the sme with him in real life. What to say. Nysterious are the calculations of this universe - suck the lemon, suck the lemon.

Just wanted to add this - I fight shy of posting in this thread(there must be some psychological explanation to this) but just wanted to note that just a day prior to this, C Ashwath, a singer and music director of repute in Kannada, passed away. Double whammy for Kannada cinema.
To those who wonder why we must notice C Ashwath here, my knowledge of him stems from Ilaiyaraja's reference to him. Ashwath sang the bengali boatman prelude to "nAn ganga nadhiyai pArkum pozhudhu" in Mahanadhi.

Media goofs up on Cochin Haneefa's death
TV channels created a flutter when they aired incorrect information about the death of popular Malayalam film star Cochin Haneefa.
The TV channels said Haneefa, aged 58 years, died at a private hospital in Chennai Tuesday at noon. Soon condolences from Haneefa's colleagues started pouring in. The TV channels also started running clips of the popular films Haneefa acted in.
But at 1 p.m. the channels said they regretted airing the news which they received from their sources in the hospital at Chennai where Haneefa is admitted.
According to the channels, the latest news is that Haneefa is "very serious".

Cochin Haneefa was a multi faceted talent. Earlier in his career, I didn't think much of him. He was a permanent artist in those MohanLal - Priyadharsan churnouts in early eighties. Even when he started directing movies, his initial outputs like Oru Aan kiliyude Tharaattu and Moonu Maasangaluku Munpe [Paasa Paraivaigal in Tamil] were not great with the later being just ok for me.
Come Vatsalyam [1993], my respect for him did a U-turn. Though Lohithadas had carved out a masterpiece of screenplay and Mammootty gave his life and soul to that Meladathu Raghavan Nair character, it still required some calibre to present it that way in celluloid and Haneefa did a pretty good job, which earned him accolades all over. Probably that made him realise that he can do a better job with the megaphone and he did not direct any Malayalam movie after that. Though he was working on a script involving a deaf and dumb person selling payasam in a market as the main protagonist, this movie set in a typical Kerala village mileu did not take off.
The actor in him mellowed over the years and he was a sure bet in comical as well as character roles late in his career. His unique voice was an assest and especially his Tamil dialogues with the Malayalam accent was liked by many.
The fact that in 70's, he was the President of Sivaji Fans Association in Ernakulam [Cochin] makes it more painful.
I had a telephonic conversation with him once [courtesy Mohanram sir] and met him once at Nuts and Bakes shop at Nungampakkam. On both occasions, NT and Vatslayam were the topics we discussed. On the second occasion he was playing the perfect father to his twin daughters who were making him run all over the shop and in spite of that he spent some time with me.
May his family come out of this trauma and let his soul rest in piece.

Chandrabose passes away
Popular music director Chandrabose, who composed music for more than 300 movies between late 1980s and early 1990s, passed away in Chennai this morning.
According to sources, he was not keeping well for sometime now and was admitted to a hospital recently. "His condition worsened a couple of days ago and he breathed his last in the wee hours of today", they added.
Chandrabose shot to fame scoring music for several movies produced by AVM including Rajinikanth starrer 'Manidhan' and 'Raja Chinna Roja'. The song 'Superstaru yarunnu kettaa' became a chartbuster and is still one of the favourites of Rajini fans.
The music composer's work in films such as 'Paati Sollai Thattadhey', 'Anna Nagar Mudhal Theru' and 'Maanagara Kaaval' won appreciations from many. Veterans of film industry have expressed shock over Chandrabose's demise.

In one of the NG movies, all the world leaders are meeting. Nielsen barges into the meeting and bashes them up and when he gets to Gorbachev, hold him tight, fishes out a handkerchief and wipes off the birthmark on his pate :rotfl:

Malaysia Vasu devan - unforgettable singer who along with SPB made listening to songs in 70s and 80s a delightful experience has climbed aboard the heaven bound train...
It is a loss of unimaginable proportions. He was the perfect voice to sing earthly folk melodies as well as rock style pop songs. will miss his singing a lot...

When TMS was not available for NT, SPB or KJJ did a commendable job. But something was amiss, they had great voice, but it was never close to NTs. Then, something happened. I am not sure who did this first, but the composer roped in Malaysia Vasudevan to sing for NT and the rest, as they say, is history. If NT's top ten album were to be listed (tough thing to do) Muthal Mariyathai will definitely be there, and Malaysia Vasudevan is all over it. And that is merely one of his many achievements! Rest in peace to the man who brought a new definition to my country's name. Rest In Peace Malaysia Vasudevan sir.
