Vaali (T. S. Rangarajan) 29 October 1931 - 18 July 2013

Vaali has not only written lyrics in pure Tamil, but all sorts of folk, hip-hop, rhythm and blues as well. He has also mixed other languages in Tamil songs. The legend goes that Vaali at one time in his life was contemplating suicide due to immense poverty when he heard the lines of the song "Mayakkama Kalakkamma" from the movie SumaiThangi, penned by Kannadasan. The lines "Unakkum keezhey ullavar kodi ninaithu paarthu nimmadhi naadu..." changed his mindset and renewed his vigour to live a new life. Thus was born the great poet we know today.

He has quoted that there were 24 hours with him but no food to eat and next came a time when he had enough on the plate but no time to eat.

Lyricist Vaali, who secured a place on a par with Kannadasan at a time the latter strode like a colossus in the Tamil film music world, died in Chennai on Thursday evening.

Vaali, who dominated the film world for over five decades and wrote songs for many a protagonist played by actors from MGR to Dhanush, was not well for quite some time. He was in hospital for over a month. He was 82 and is survived by his son.

His songs were packed with brilliant lines and imagery and there were times when Tamil film music buffs were at their wits' end to discern whether a particular song was written by Kannadasan or Vaali.

On the one hand, he wrote songs like Madhavi Ponmayilal, Ammavendrazhaikatha uyirillaye, Naanaga naan illai and Janani janani that transported the listener to a different plane, on the other he entertained the masses with low-brow songs such as chikkupukku chikkupukku railay, mukkala muqabla and singari sarakku nalla sarakku.

As professional rivals Kannadasan and Vaali had joined issue with each other on public platforms. But in private life they were close friends and spent many an evening together.

Overwhelmed by his the brilliant imagery of the lines in the song Pakkathu Veetu Paruva Matchan in the film Karpagam, Kannadasan declared in a public meeting that Vaali would be his heir-apparent. It was in this function in 1963, Viswanathan and Ramamurthy were given the title Mellisai Mannargal.

Though he had written songs for MGR, Sivaji Ganesan and present day heroes, he could easily be described a “poet laureate” of former Chief Minister MGR.

If MGR made films with political message that would stand by him in good stead in the days to come, Vaali’s lines reinforced his ideas.

Naan Aanai Ittal (enga veetu pillai), moondrezhuthil yen moochirukkum (Theiva Thai), kan pona pokkiley kaal pogalama (Panam Padaithavan), Puthiya vaanam, puthiya boomi (Anbe Vaa), Thambi Naan Piranthen Kanchiyilay Netru, and tharaimel pirakka vaithan (Padakoti) galvanised the masses.

Born S. Rangarajan in Thiruparaithurai near Tiruchi in 1931, he assumed the pen name Vaali, as he was an ardent fan of famed artist Mali working with Ananda Vikatan, now a Tamil bi-weekly. Vaali was also a student of the Government College of Arts in Chennai. Vaali was also known as Vaaliba Kavignar (youthful lyricist)

A theatre enthusiast, he had directed many plays in Tiruchi and Srirangam and worked for the All India Radio (AIR) as a part-time employee, before making a foray into the film world as lyricist.

In his memoir he recalled that two youngsters would regularly visit his drama rehearsals and he wanted one of them to take a role of woman in his plays. The youth who rejected the offer later became Sri Jayendra Saraswathi of the Kanchi Sankara Mutt. The other person was Sivaji Ganesan.

He landed in Chennai in search of opportunities in the film world and spent his days smoking cigarettes and drinking water as he had little money to buy food. He was staying in a lodge, with Nagesh, later to become a master comedian, in the next room.

The break came in 1958 and he wrote his fist songs for the film Azhagarmalai Kallan. The first film he wrote for MGR was Nallavan Vaazhvaan and the dialogues were penned by former Chief Minister C.N. Annadurai.

But Ithayathil Nee starring Gemini Ganesan gave him the much needed popularity. MGR starrer Padakotti took him to new heights as a lyricist. Subsequently he wrote almost all films of MGR and shared a fantastic relationship with M.S. Viswanathan.

“I was writing lines for my livelihood. I started paying tax only after joining hands with MSV,” he had said in his memoir.

Vaali also wrote some of the fine songs for Kamal Haasan and Rajinikanth.

His devotional song Karpanai entralum Karchilai entralum on Lord Muruga continues to move generations of devout listeners. “Koovi azhaithal kural koduppan”, set to the raaga valaji has become an immortal Tamil krithi rendered in classical music concerts.

While he was a believer, he benefited immensely from his association with the leaders of the Dravidian Movement including three former Chief Ministers C.N. Annadurai, MGR and M. Karunanidhi.

A prolific writer, he had penned the biographies of Rama (Avathara Purushan), Krishna (Krishna Vijayam) and Ramanuja (Ramanuja Kaviyam) in verse form. Pandavar Bhoomi is Mahabharatha in modern verse. His latest work was the biography of Srimad Azhagiyasingar, the 45th Jeer of the Ahobila Mutt.

Rest in peace Vaali sir. He was sixty years elder to me and yet treated me like a friend. Can never forget the times I've shared with him.
I've had the privilege of working with him on Ethir Neechal. Proud to have done that. He will always be in our hearts.

அவரை இழந்து வாடும் குடும்பத்தினருக்கும், அவர்பால் அன்பு கொண்டவர்களுக்கும் ஆழ்ந்த இரங்கல்கள்...

One of the last pillars of the Tamil film music industry has left us for good. Perhaps, it was premonition of his impending death that prompted him to share memories of his career almost simultaneously in 'Ananda Vikatan' and 'Thuglak' weeklies recently. Both the series enjoyed immense popularity and many still marveled at the poet's powerful memory power. He had written like there was no tomorrow. He was also answering questions fielded by readers in the Anandha Vikatan weekly for a prolonged period. He candidly shared his views, beliefs and relationships on all things under the sun. The substances in these series were rare additional information not covered in his biography which was published a few years earlier.

Also recently he was writing a series of nostalgia pieces in Kumudham weekly which were done in his usual signature prose and style. At that time of writing this series the untimely deaths of PB Sreenivos, TK Ramamurthy and TM Soundrarajan occurred. He wrote special tributes to these demised legends who were once his close colleagues in that column in Kumudham. These three departed souls were lucky enough to be eulogised by none other than the prolific Vaali himself and that too in the prominent Kumudham weekly. With no contemporaries left, I mean poets of his time, wonder who will be writing an eulogy for him so eloquently like how he did for others, Kannadhasan included. Vaali has indeed left a vacuum in the context of eulogy-writing.

Vaali's demise is different from others, for sure. If it is true that he was occupationally busy with AR Rahman just before he was rushed to the hospital then he has lived fully the all-too common tag line 'until my last breath I must be in show business'.

When a once long- reigning legend dies the obituary will usually carry the lines 'his death is a big loss to the Tamil film industry' or words to that effect. These legends would have voluntarily or statutorily retired and at the time of death they would have been almost forgotten. They would have been out of job at the time of death. So, actually there is no loss due to the death. But for formality's sake and as a matter of respect these words are used in civility.

In Vaali's case, however, it is true to its form. Even, prior to this last admission to the hospital he was in the midst of writing lyrics for films in production and that too for top guns of the industry like Kamalhassan and AR Rahman. Amid those new generation songwriters, Vaali was still a force to be reckoned with even after crossing the eighties' age bar. He dutifully carried the honorific nomenclature 'youth poet' faithfully until his last breath. Whoever bestowed this title (youth poet) must have been a seer.

To think that the man had to while away his time and bask in poverty during his early days in Kodambakkam - but at the time of his final alive days top industry players actually awaited him in the hospital so that they could complete their projects! That itself speaks of his popularity.

The first half of 2013 has seen a list of prominent deaths in the Tamil film industry like PB Sreenivos, TK Ramamurthy, TM Soundrarajan, Lalgudi Jayaraman and Aathmanathan (the latter just a couple of days ago). Just as we were taking a breather suddenly came this shocking news that the latest in the bucket list is Vaali.

That made me wonder whether did anyone play the all-time Vaali's song 'Iraivaa Un Maaligayil Ethanoya' (Oli Vilakku) in places of worship just like how they did during MGR's life and death situation in 1984? That is, over the last one month when Vaali was warded in the hospital? Or perhaps, like all poets the works are only meant for others' well-being and not for the self? His mentor, MGR, survived but not the protege who wrote that timeless song.

In his eulogy to Kannadhasan, Vaali described the latter as 'the Tagore without the beard and Bharathi minus the moustache'. But during his final days and until he breathed his last he looked every inch resembling Rabindranath Tagore and a bit of Subramania Bharathi in essence and appearance.

I am very saddened by this news :( Finding difficult to come to terms. Death is inevitable but when it comes to certain individuals we take that they would live forever. Vaali was one of those. Rest in Peace Sir !

Fascination to lyrics of Tamil movie songs was one of the initial reasons for my interest in the Tamil language. I had a collection of songs those days, and used to listen to them just to enjoy the rhyming, rhythmic and poetic lines. Based on what a friend had told me earlier, I presumed that most, if not all, of those great lines were written by Kavignar Kannadasan. I was pleasantly surprised in later years to find out that Vaali had indeed written a lot of my favorite songs.

I thank the legend Vaali for enriching my life with some of the most melodious and imaginative lines written in any language.

Can't express in words how much I am deeply saddened to hear about the death of T. S. Rangarajan, popularly known as Vaali in TFI. It must be a difficult moment for all those in the TFI as well as the worldwide fans and followers of this talented Artist / Lyrist who had walked on earth among us and knowing that He is no more puts a lump between my throat. I wish to go on talking about his immense contribution to TFI - how well he had found a permanent place in most of the people's heart - how respectful he is considered among his colleagues - his association with “A to Z” film makers and artists and of course the “6 to 60” music directors - his adaptive nature when it comes to lyrics for a specific background - and so on and so forth. But I am unable to continue with all those I wish or rather want to say, as I am unable to overcome the loss, which is quite huge.

Just wish to share how much Vaali had an influence on me. I have not met him, or he is (hate to use 'was') not even aware of me, his secret admirer. But still 999/1000 times it simply worked.

1/ Heard that he is short tempered. Wish I got yelled by him that would have permitted me to gain more knowledge on Cinema, in general, as his screamings would have been lessons.

2/ Rajini had pointed out that Vaali once had said "Kalaraiku pogam varai Silarai thevai". Those words stuck to me just like the baby kangaroo. Many values are hidden in these lines. Overview is about hard work, but people like me who look into sociology thru scientific methods but still trying to take the spiritual path, these words are a boon which summaries how to cope up in this materialistic world.

3. Vaali is credited for writing the lyrics for MOTHER of all "mother-songs". Being Isai Gnani / Superstar fan, what else can I ask for, but thank Vaali a ton for creating the most eternal song that will be chanted even after I am buried :

There could be legends before and after, but my movie experience started with the illumination from Vaali's lyrics. As a huge follower, I will say that his contributions will stay as the pillars among the rest erected by other legends. Being very particular about lyrics, sometimes going too far or hard about certain songs and lyrics, I was always jaw broken while criticizing his works. His enormous knowledge on culture, spirituality, politics, trend - and about anything else - showcases clearly his grip on his métier as a Lyristist. The debate whether it’s the music or the lyrics - Vaali is the answer - Music is the body with parts, but the breathe that makes it live are the Lyrics, and who else than Vaali could pump in the unpolluted air into music.

இவை அனைத்திலுமே இருப்பதுதான் தெய்வம்.

One of the verses that has influenced me quite a bit. Vaali Sir will live forever with such words.

I have heard, the lyrics he penned for 'நிலவு ஒரு பெண்ணாகி' made Kannadasan feel envious. There are many songs that describe the beauty of a woman in many different ways and to me this song surely tops the list.

He has always been 'in'. Loved by many generations, will be missed by many. Thank you mappi for writing the lyrics of Mannan song down. It's the best ode to a mother IMO.

This morning thamizharuvi manian was telling in PT that Vaali's style was very similar to Kannadasan and this was his both strength and weakness. Many a time i thought it was a kannadasan song when it was actually Vaali's.

நூறாண்டு காண வேண்டிய வாலியை காலன் 82ல் எடுத்துக் கொண்டான். அதனால் என்ன. நீலக்கடல் காயலாம், வார்த்தை சமுத்திரம் வற்றவா போகிறது.

1. பாடல் எழுதுவதற்கு சிலர் மூட் வேணும் என்பார்கள். வாலிக்கு அப்படியில்லை, எந்த சூழலிலும் எழுதுவார். பாடல் வரி எழுத வரலைன்னாதான் மூட் சரியில்லைன்னு வேடிக்கையாகச் சொல்வார்.

2. புதிய இசையமைப்பாளர் என்றால், நாலஞ்சு படம் பண்ணுங்க, அப்புறம் பார்த்துட்டு உங்க இசையில எழுதறேன் என்று திருப்பி அனுப்பி விடுவார். ஜென்டில்மேனுக்காக ரஹ்மானிடமும் அதேதான் சொன்னார். நான் சேகரோட மகன் என்று ரஹ்மான் சொன்னதும் ஆச்சரியப்பட்டு பாடல் எழுத சம்மதித்தார். அந்தப் பாடல்தான் ஜென்டில்மேனில் வரும் சிக்கு புக்கு ரயிலே.

3. இளம் கவிஞர்களின் பாடல் வரிகள் சிறப்பாக இருந்தால் பாராட்ட தயங்க மாட்டார். ந.முத்துக்குமார் சிவா மனசுல சக்தி படத்தில் எழுதிய, ஒரு கல் ஒரு கண்ணாடி பாடலை கேட்டு, எம்ஜிஆர் இருந்திருந்தால் இந்த பல்லவிக்கே ஒரு வீடு பரிசளித்திருப்பார் என பாராட்டியிருக்கிறார்.

4. வாலி எழுதிய சில பாடல்கள் பயங்கர எதிர்ப்பை சந்தித்தன. முக்கியமாக சகலகலாவல்லவனில் வரும் நேத்து ராத்திரி யம்மா, இந்துவில் வரும் சக்கரவள்ளி கிழங்கே சமைஞ்சது எப்படி. மிகப்பொpய வார்த்தை தாக்குதல்களை சமைஞ்சது பாடலுக்காக வாலி எதிர்கொண்டார்.

5. வாலியும், நாகேஷும் வாடா போடா நண்பர்கள். வாய்ப்பு தேடிய காலத்தில் தி.நகர் காபி ஹவுஸில் இருவரும் ஒரே அறையில் தங்கியிருந்தனர். வாலிக்கு பேப்பர் வாங்கித் தந்து, எதையாவது எழுது என ஊக்கப்படுத்தியவர் நாகேஷ்.

6. இளையராஜா இசையில் வாலி முதலில் எழுதிய பாடல், பத்ரகாளி படத்தில் இடம்பெற்ற, வாங்கோண்ணா...

7. திருச்சி ஆல் இந்தியா ரேடியாவில் வாலி வேலை பார்த்த போது அவர் எழுதிய நாடகங்களுக்கு மனோரமா நடித்திருக்கிறார்.

8. வாலியின் தந்தை ஸ்ரீனிவாச அய்யங்கார், தாய் பொன்னம்மாள். வாலிக்கு ஒரு மூத்த சகோதரர், மூன்று மூத்த சகோதரிகள்.

9. உழைப்பில் மிகுந்த நம்பிக்கை உள்ளவர். விடா முயற்சியும், உழைப்புமே தன்னை இப்படியொரு உயர்ந்த நிலையில் வைத்திருக்கிறது என்று அடிக்கடி சொல்வார். என்றாவது ஒருநாள் உங்கள் வியர்வை உங்கள் உயர்வை உங்களிடம் கொண்டு வந்து சேர்க்கும் என்பார் வாலி.

10. சின்ன வயசிலேயே எழுத்தும், கவிதையும், ஓவியமும் வாலியை ஆக்கிரமித்துவிட்டன. ஸ்ரீரங்கத்தில் இருந்த போது நோதாஜி என்ற கையெழுத்துப் பத்திரிகையை நடத்தினார். அதன் முதல் பிரதியை வெளியிட்டவர் பிரபல எழுத்தாளர் கல்கி.

11. சிலேடைப் பேச்சில் வித்தகர். பாய்ஸ் படத்துக்காக பொருள் இல்லாமல் ஒரு பாடல் (டேட்டிங் பாடல்) வேண்டும் என வாலியிடம் இயக்குனர் ஷங்கர் கேட்ட போது வாலியின் பதில், பொருள் இல்லாமல் நான் பாடல் எழுதறதில்லை (அந்தப் பாடலுக்கு மட்டும் ஒரு லட்சம் பெற்றதாக கேள்வி).

12. வாலியின் இயற்பெயர் ரங்கராஜன். அவரை அவரது தயார் ரங்கப்பா என்றுதான் அழைப்பார்.

13. கண்ணதாசன் மீது அதிக மரியாதை கொண்டவர். அவர் இறந்த போது, எழுதப் படிக்கத் தெரியாதவர்களில் எமனும் ஒருவன். அழகிய கவிதைப் புத்தகத்தை கிழித்துவிட்டான் என்று எழுதினார்.

14. சென்னைக்கு பாடல் எழுதுவதற்காக முதலில் வந்த போது வாலி திருவல்லிக்கேணியில் உள்ள சுந்தர மூர்த்தி விநாயகர் தெருவில் நண்பர்களுடன் தங்கியிருந்தார். வாடகை மாதம் ஐந்து ரூபாய்.

15. நன்றி மறக்காதவர். எம்.எஸ்.விஸ்வநாதனை சந்தித்தப் பிறகுதான் தனக்கு இந்த வாழ்வு கிடைத்தது என்பதை எல்லா மேடைகளிலும் சொல்வார். எம்எஸ்வியை சந்திக்கும் முன்பு எனக்கு சோத்துக்கே வழியில்லை, அவரை சந்தித்த பிறகு சோறு திங்கவே நேரமில்லை என்றும், எம்எஸ்வியை சந்திப்பதற்கு முன் தரித்திரம் என்னை தொட்டது, அவரை சந்தித்த பிறகு சரித்திரம் தொட்டது எனவும் கூறுவார்.

16. சக கலைஞர்களைப் பாராட்டி திடீர் கவிதை புனைவார். கவிஞர் முத்துலிங்கத்தை பற்றியும் எழுதியிருக்கிறார். பாடகி பி.சுசீலாவை குறித்து அவர் எழுதியது,

விளைந்த இடம் விஜயவாடா
கடவுள் கலந்து வைத்தான்
நீ விளையும் போதே
குரல்வளையில் விஸ்கி, சோடா.

17. கண்ணதாசனுடன் எம்.ஜி.ஆருக்கு சிறிய மனக்கசப்பு ஏற்பட்டிருந்த நேரத்தில்தான் வாலி படகோட்டி படத்தின், கொடுத்ததெல்லாம் கொடுத்தான் பாடலை எழுதினார். அதனை கேட்ட எம்.ஜி.ஆர் அன்றிரவு நடந்த பொதுக் கூட்டத்தில் என்னுடைய படங்களின் பாடல்களை இனி வாலி எழுதுவார் என அறிவித்தார்.

18. ஏவிஎம் முக்காக வாலி எழுதிய முதல் பாடல், அவளுக்கென்ன அழகிய முகம்... சர்வர் சுந்தரம் படத்தில் இடம் பெறுவது. இரவு நேரம் தான் போதையில் இருந்த போது மெய்யப்ப செட்டியார் ஆள்விட்டு அழைத்து அந்தப் பாடலை எழுதி வாங்கியதாக வாலி தெரிவித்திருக்கிறார்.

19. வாலி கேமராமேன் மாருதிராவுடன் இணைந்து வடைமாலை என்ற படத்தை இயக்கியிருக்கிறார்.

20. வாலிக்கு சென்டிமெண்டில் நம்பிக்கை உண்டு. ம வரிசையில் அவர் எழுதியப் பாடல்கள் வெற்றி பெற்றதை ரஹ்மான் சுட்டிக்காட்டிய பிறகு ம வரிசையில் பல பாடல்களை எழுதினார். அழகிய தமிழ்மகனில் வரும் முன்னால் முன்னால் வாடா... சில்லுன்னு ஒரு காதல் படத்தில் வரும் முன்பே வா அன்பே வா... ஆகியவை அப்படி எழுதியவை.

21. கருணாநிதியின் எங்கள் தங்கம் படத்தில் வரும் நாள் அளவோடு ரசிப்பவன் பாடல் வாலி எழுதியது. இரண்டாவது வரிக்காக அவர் யோசனையில் இருந்த போது, எதையும் அளவின்றி கொடுப்பவன் என இரண்டாவது வரியை சொன்னவர் கருணாநிதி.

22. வாலியின் மனைவி ரமண திலகம். தனது லவ் லட்டர் நாடகத்தில் கதாநாயகியாக நடிக்க வந்த அவரை யாருக்கும் சொல்லாமல் ரகசியமாக திருமணம் செய்தார் வாலி.

23. வாலி பார்த்தாரே பரவசம், ஹேராம் உள்பட பல படங்களில் நடித்திருக்கிறார். முதல் படம், பாலசந்தரின் பொய்க்கால் குதிரை.

24. எம்.ஜி.ஆர். நெருக்கமானவர்களை அன்பு மிகுதியில் ஆண்டவனே என விளிப்பார். அப்படி விளிக்கப்பட்டவர்களில் வாலியும் ஒருவர்.

25. பாடல் எழுதி வாங்க வாலியின் வீட்டிற்கு எம்.எஸ்.வி. தொடங்கி ரஹ்மான்வரை அனேகமாக தமிழின் இன்றைய இசையமைப்பாளர்கள் அனைவரும் வந்திருக்கிறார்கள். இது வாலிக்கு மட்டுமே உள்ள சிறப்பு.

24. கோபக்காரர். வாலின்னாலே கோபம்தான் ஞாபகம் வரும் என்று கமல் ஒருமுறை கூறினார். இதையே ரஜினியும் கூறியிருக்கிறார்.

25. சக கவிஞர்களை மதிப்பதில் வாலிக்கு நிகர் வாலிதான். அதேநேரம் சிறந்த பாடல்களை கேட்டால் எப்படி நாம் அதனை தவறவிட்டோம் என நினைக்கக் கூடியவர். கவிஞர் தாமரையின் ஒரு பாடலை கேட்டு இரவு துhங்க முடியலை என்று கூறியிருக்கிறார்.

26. பாடல் எழுதும் வாய்ப்பு வாலிக்கு சும்மா கிடைத்துவிடவில்லை. கே.வி.மகாதேவன் பாடல் வாய்ப்பு கேட்டுப் போன வாலியை அவர் காது படவே திட்டி அனுப்பியிருக்கிறார். எம்.எஸ்.வி.யும் வாலிக்கு சினிமாவுக்கு பாடல் எழுத வராது, பேசாமல் வானொலி வேலையை பார்க்கச் சொல் என்று வாலியின் நண்பரிடம், வாலி விஸ்வநதனை சந்திக்கச் சென்ற போது கூறியிருக்கிறார்.

27. எம்.ஜி.ஆருடன் வாலிக்கு 25 வருடகால நீண்ட நெருக்கமான பழக்கம் உண்டு. எம்.ஜி.ஆரை அண்ணா என்றுதான் அழைப்பார்.

28. வாலிக்கு நெடுங்காலமாக மது அருந்தும் பழக்கம் உண்டு. பேச்சிலராக இருந்த போது அவரது மாலைப்பொழுது ஸ்காட்ச் விஸ்கியுடன்தான் தொடங்கும்.

29. ரோஷக்காரர். பாரதவிலாஸ் படத்தில் வாலி எழுதிய இந்தியா என்பது என் வீடு பாடலுக்கு தேசிய விருது தருவதற்காக வாலியிடம் அவரது பயோடேட்டாவை கேட்டனர். வாலி தரவில்லை. அந்தப் பாட்டுக்கு தேசிய விருதுக்கான தகுதியிருந்தா யாரு எழுதினது என்று பார்க்காமல் விருது தரணும், எங்கிட்டயே நான் யார்னு கேட்டு தர்றதுக்கு எந்த விருதாக இருந்தாலும் வேண்டாம் என்று தேசிய விருதையே மறுத்தார்.

30. ஈகோ இல்லாமல் எதையும் முன் வைப்பவர். வாலி அவதார புருஷன் எழுதுவதற்கான துhண்டுதல்களில் ஒன்று, மு.மேத்தாவின் நபிகள் காவியம். ஒரு இந்து விளக்கை ஒரு இஸ்hமிய விளக்குதான் ஏற்றி வைத்தது என அதனை குறிப்பிட்டார்.

31. வாலியையும் வார்த்தையையும் பிரிக்க முடியாதது போல அவருடன் இருந்த இன்னொரு பழக்கம் தாம்பூலம் போடுவது. ஐம்பது வருடங்களுக்கு மேல் தாம்பூலம் போட்டு வந்தார் வாலி. வார்த்தைகள் சரியாக அமையாத போது கவிஞரே தாம்பூலம் போடுங்க என்று நெருக்கமானவர்கள் சொல்வதுண்டு. தாம்பூலம் போட்டால் வாலி புத்துணர்ச்சியடைவார்.

32. பாடல் வரிகளில் சம்பந்தப்பட்டவர்களை இணைத்து விடுவதில் வாலி கில்லாடி. இளையராஜாவின் தாய் பெயர் சின்னதாய். தளபதியில் ஸ்ரீவித்யா சின்ன வயசிலேயே ரஜினியை பெற்றெடுப்பார். அதனை பயன்படுத்தி சின்னதாய் அவள் என்று பாட்டு எழுதியிருப்பார்.

33. வாலியை நாடகத்தின்பால் திருப்பியது, கருணாநிதியின் மருதநாட்டு இளவரசி படத்தின் வசனங்கள். அதன் பிறகே நாடகம் எழுதுவதில் வாலி ஆர்வம் காட்டினார்.

34. புரியாத வார்த்தைகளில் பாடல் புனைவதில் முன்னோடி. மாருகோ.. மாருகோ..., முக்காலா முக்காபுலா, டாலாக்கு டோல் டப்பிமா... சில உதாரணங்கள்.

35. தனித்தமிழை பயன்படுத்தாததற்கு வாலி வருத்தப்பட்டதில்லை. மாறாக அது சரிதான் என வாதிட்டிருக்கிறார். யானையை நால்வாய் என்றும், மானை புல்வாய் என்றும் சொன்னால் யாருக்கு தெரியும், மக்களை சென்றடைய வேண்டும் என்பதே பிரதானம் என்பார்.

36. எம்.ஜி.ஆருடன் நெருக்கமான நட்பை பேணி வந்தவராக இருந்தும், எம்.ஜி.ஆர், சிவாஜி யார் நடித்தாலும் எம்.ஆர்.ராதா படத்தில் இருந்தே ஆக வேண்டும் என்ற கட்டாயம் அப்போது இருந்தது என்று உண்மையை வெளிப்படையாக கூறியவர் வாலி. இதற்காக எம்.ஜி.ஆர். ரசிகர்களின் கடும் கண்டனத்துக்கு அவர் ஆளாக நேர்ந்தது.

37. ஒரு இசையமைப்பாளர் வேண்டம் என்று திருப்பி அனுப்பிய பாடல்கள் வேறெhரு இசையமைப்பாளரின் இசையில் வெளிவந்து பொpய ஹிட்டான சரித்திரம் வாலிக்கு உண்டு. வாலியின் எவர்கிரின், கொடுத்ததெல்லாம் கொடுத்தான் யாருக்காக கொடுத்தான்… இசையமைப்பாளர் எம்.பி.சீனிவாசனால் நிராகரிக்கப்பட்டதுதான்.

38. வாலி மொத்தம் 17 படங்களுக்கு வசனம் எழுதியிருக்கிறார். அதில் பாக்யராஜின் சாட்டை இல்லாத பம்பரம் படமும் ஒன்று.

39. வார்த்தை விளையாட்டில் வல்லவர். சட்டென்று வார்த்தையால் அடிக்கிற திறமை அவரைப் போல் சிலரிடம்தான் உள்ளது. மூப்பனாரை பற்றி பேசும் போது மூப்பனார் என் தோப்பனார் என்றார். அதேபோல் கற்பில் மேலானவர் மாதவியா கண்ணகியா என்று பட்டிமன்றம். நீர் யாரை சொல்றீர் என்று கண்ணதாசன் வாலியை கேட்க, வாலியின் பதில். இரண்டு பேருமே மேலானவர் இல்லை, இரண்டு பேருமே ஃபீமேல்.

40. நான் ஆணையிட்டால் பாடலை நான் அரசன் என்றால் என் ஆட்சி என்றால் என்றுதான் வாலி முதலில் எழுதியிருந்தாராம். ரொம்ப அதிகமாக இருக்கிறது என்று எம்.ஜி.ஆர். சொன்னதால் நான் ஆணையிட்டால் என்று மாற்றி எழுதினார்.

41. பாடல் எழுத கண்ணதாசன் முதற்கொண்டு பலரும் அசிஸ்டெண்டுகள் வைத்திருந்தனர். படி எடுப்பதற்கு அவர்கள் உதவுவார்கள். வாலி கடைசி காலம்வரை அசிஸ்டெண்டுகள் வைத்துக் கொண்டதில்லை. தனது வரியை தானே தன் கைப்பட எழுதுவார். கணினியும் உபயோகிப்பதில்லை.

42. நியூ படத்தில் வரும் சக்கரை இனிக்கிற சக்கரை பாடலின் சிச்சுவேஷனை எஸ்.ஜே.சூர்யா போனில் சொல்ல, சக்கர இனிக்கிற சக்கர... அதில் எறும்புக்கு என்ன அக்கறை.. நான் இக்கரை... நீ அக்கரை... என்று போனிலேயே வரிகள் சொல்லியிருக்கிறார்.

43. பல நூறு படங்களுக்கு வசனம் எழுதியிருக்கும் ஆரூர்தாஸ் வாலியை, தென்றலே என்றுதான் விளிப்பார். விருதுகளுக்கெல்லாம் மேலானது என்பார் வாலி.

44. எதிர்நீச்சல் படத்தை நோய்வாய்ப்பட்டிருந்த நிலையில் பார்த்த அண்ணா, அதில் வரும் வெற்றி வேண்டுமா போட்டுப்பாராடா எதிர்நீச்சல் பாடலை எழுதியது யார் என பாலசந்தரிடம் கேட்டுத் தெரிந்து, ரொம்ப பிரமாதமாக இருக்கு என வாலியிடம் சொல்லச் சொல்லியிருக்கிறார்.

45. வாலி படிப்பாளி. பரந்த படிப்பில்தான் அறிவு வளரும் என்பதில் நம்பிக்கை உள்ளவர். நவீன இலக்கியத்தையும் விடுவதில்லை. சாரு நிவேதிதா, குட்டி ரேவதி போன்றவர்களின் ஆக்கங்களை சமீபத்தில் படித்ததாக அவரே குறிப்பிட்டுள்ளார். பிடித்த எழுத்தாளர் காண்டேகர். ஜெயகாந்தனையும் பிடிக்கும்.

46. சிவாஜி கணேசன் வாலியை வாத்தியார் என்று அழைப்பதுண்டு. நாடகத்தில் வசனம் எழுதுகிறவர்களை அப்போது வாத்தியார் என்று அழைக்கும் மரபு இருந்தது.

47. ஆன்மீகவாதி ஆனால் ஆடம்பரவாதியல்ல. வாலியின் திருமணம் 1985 ஏப்ரல் 7 ஆம் தேதி அழைப்பிதழ், போட்டோ எதுவுமில்லாமல்தான் நடந்தது. அதிலும் அன்றைக்கு அவர் கவிஞராக உச்சத்தில் இருந்தார்.

48. ஏவி மெய்யப்ப செட்டியார் சொன்னதன் போpல் மாடர்ன் தியேட்டர்ஸ் டி.ஆர்.சுந்தரத்துக்கு முதல் பாட்டெழுதினார் வாலி. அப்போதும் சம்பளம் குறைவாக இருக்க தனக்கான நியாயமான ஊதியத்தை கேட்டு பெற்றுக் கொண்டார்.

49. பாடல் எழுத வாய்ப்புக் கிடைக்காமல் மதுரைக்கு டிவிஎஸ் சில் ஏதாவது வேலை பார்க்கலாம் என வாலி கிளம்ப தயாரான போது பி.பி.ஸ்ரீனிவாஸ் வாலியை பார்க்க வர, இன்னைக்கு என்ன பாடல் பாடினீங்க என்று வாலி அவரிடம் கேட்டிருக்கிறார். பி.பி.ஸ்ரீனிவாஸ் அன்று பாடியது, கண்ணதாசனின் மயக்கமா கலக்கமா வாழ்விலே குழப்பமா.. பாடல். அதைக் கேட்ட வாலி அந்த நிமிடமே உற்சாகமும் தன்னம்பிக்கையும் பெற்று ஊருக்குப் போகும் முடிவை ரத்து செய்தார்.

50. அதேபோல் அவரை பாடல் எழுத சென்னைக்கு வரவழைத்ததும் பாசவலை படத்தில் இடம்பெற்ற ஒரு பாடல்தான். பட்டுக்கோட்டை கல்யாண சுந்தரம் எழுதியது.

51. மது, தாம்பூல பழக்கத்தை பலர் சொல்லியும் வாலி விடவில்லை. எந்த கெட்டப்பழக்கமும் இல்லாத அவரது தந்தை திடீரென அகாலமடைந்ததால் ஏற்பட்ட விரக்தியும் இதற்கு காரணமாக இருக்கலாம் என்கிறார்கள் வாலிக்கு நெருக்கமானவர்கள்.

52. வாலியை அவரது தந்தை ஒவியம் கற்க அனுமதிக்கவில்லை. ஒருமுறை அவர்களின் வீட்டிற்கு வந்த தங்கம்மாள் என்ற அம்மையார் வாலி வரைந்திருந்த ஒரு படத்தைப் பார்த்து, என் தந்தையை அப்படியே இதில் பார்க்கிறேன் என்று அழுதார். அந்தப் படம் மகாகவி பாரதி. அழுதவர் பாரதியின் மகன் தங்கம்மாள் பாரதி. சென்னை ஸ்கூல் ஆஃப் ஆர்ட்ஸில் வாலியை அதன் பிறகு அவரது தந்தையே சேர்த்துவிட்டார்.

53. ஒருமுறைக்கு பலமுறை திருத்தி எழுதச் சொன்னால் வாலிக்கு கோபம் வரும். கமல்ஹhசன் ஒருமுறை, இந்த ஃபீலிங் போதாது என்று கேட்க நாலுமுறை மாற்றி எழுதினார். கடைசியில் இதுக்கு மேல என்னால ஃபீல் பண்ண முடியாது என்று ரைட்டிங் பேடை துhக்கி எறிந்தார். பிறகு அவர் கடைசியாக எழுதியதே படத்தில் இடம்பெற்றது. அந்தப் பாடல்தான் அபூர்வசகோதரர்களில் வரும், உன்னை நினைச்சேன் பாட்டுப் படிச்சேன் தங்கமே ஞானத் தங்கமே.

54. வாலி வெளிநாடு சென்றதில்லை. அதனால் அவரை பாஸ்போர்ட் இல்லா கவிஞன் என்பார்கள். நான் வெளிநாடுகள் போனதில்லையே தவிர பல வெளிநாடுகள் எனக்குள் போயிருக்கின்றன என தான் வெளிநாட்டு மதுபானம் அருந்துவதை சிலேடையாக சொல்லிக் காட்டுவார்.

55. முருக மற்றும் அம்மன் பக்தர். முருகனை சந்தர்ப்பம் கிடைக்கும் போதெல்லாம் பாட்டில் இழுத்துவிடுவார். உதாரணம்,
வெள்ளிக்கிழமை விடியும் நேரம் வாசலில் கோலமிட்டேன்,
வள்ளிக்கணவன் பேரைச் சொல்லி கூந்தலில் பூ முடித்தேன்.

56. மனைவி ரமண திலகத்தின் மரணம் வாலியை கடுமையாக பாதித்தது. அவரின் மறைவுக்குப் பின் இப்படி எழுதினார்.

57. வாலி சிலரைப் போல் வதவதவென்று ஒரு பாடலுக்கு பல்லவியும் சரணமும் எழுதுவதில்லை. யாராக இருந்தாலும் நான்கு பல்லவி, நான்கு சரணங்கள். அதிலேயே இயக்குனரும் இசையமைப்பாளர்களும் திருப்திப்பட்டுக் கொள்வார்கள்.

58. கவிஞன் வறுமையில் வாட வேண்டும் என்பதில் உடன்பாடு இல்லாதவர். 1964 முதல் வருமான வரி கட்டி வந்தார்.

59. எம்.எஸ்.வி.யும், வாலியும் இசையமைப்பாளர், பாலாசிரியருக்கு மேலாக நட்பு வளர்த்துக் கொண்டவர்கள். கலங்கரை விளக்கம் கம்போஸிங். என்னை அசத்துற மாதிரி பல்லவி எழுதினால் இதெல்லாம் உனக்குதான் என்று தனது கழுத்து சங்கிலியையும், ரோலக்ஸ் வாட்சையும் கழற்றி ஆர்மோனியத்தின் மீது வைத்தார் எம்.எஸ்.வி. வாலி பல்லவி சொன்னார். சங்கிலியும், வாட்சும் வாலிக்கு கிடைத்தது. அந்தப் பல்லவிதான், காற்று வாங்கப் போனேன் ஒரு கவிதை வாங்கி வந்தேன்.

60. வாலியிடம் அசிஸ்டெண்டாக சேர மூன்று பேர் முயன்றனர். ஒருவர் கிராமத்தைச் சேர்ந்தவர், இன்னொருவர் மெடிகல் ஷhப் வைத்திருந்தவர். மூன்றாவது ஆள் நாடகம் எழுதுகிறவர். அவர்கள்தான் பிற்காலத்தில் பிரபலமான கங்கை அமரன், ராம.நாராயணன், ஆர்.சி.சக்தி

61. பாடல் எழுத தேவையான நேரம் எடுத்துக் கொள்வார். அரை மணியிலும் பாடல் தயாராகிவிடும். பழசிராஜாவில் இடம்பெறும் பாடல் முஸ்லீம் சம்பந்தப்பட்டது என்பதால் இளையராஜாவிடம் 3 மாதங்கள் காலஅவகாசம் வாங்கியதுதான் அதிகபட்சம்.

62. எல்லோரையும் புகழ்கிறார் என்றெhரு விமர்சனம் வாலி மீது உண்டு. எல்லோரையும் புகழ்றது தப்பில்லையே, துhஷணம் செய்தாதான் தப்பு என்பார்.

65. பாடல்கள் எழுதி புகழ் பெற்ற பிறகு வாலிக்கு பாராட்டு கூட்டம் நடந்தது. வெறும் பாடலாசிரியராக இருந்தால் போதாது என்று அவர் எழுதி வெளியிட்டதுதான் அவரது முதல் புத்தகமான அம்மா.

70. வாலி சினிமாவுக்கு வருவதற்கு முன் எழுதிய பாடல், கற்பனை என்றாலும் கற்சிலை என்றாலும்... இந்தப் பாடலில் மனதை பறிகொடுத்துதான் வாலியை சினிமாவில் பாட்டெழுத சென்னைக்கு வரச்சொன்னார் டி.எம்.எஸ். பிறகு அந்தப் பாடலுக்கு இசையமைத்து அவரே பாடினார்.

71. வாலி நாடகத்துக்காக எழுதிய பாடல்கள் 1956 ல் புதையல் படத்துக்காக வாங்கப்பட்டது. என்றாலும் அப்பாடல்கள் புரட்சி வீரன் புலித்தேவனில்தான் பயன்படுத்தப்பட்டது.

73. 1958 ல் அண்ணா கதைவசனத்தில் பா.நீலகண்டனின் இயக்கத்தில் எம்.ஜி.ஆர். நடித்த நல்லவன் வாழ்வான் படத்துக்கு வாலி பாட்டு எழுதினார். எம்.ஜி.ஆர். படத்துக்கு பாட்டெழுத வாய்ப்பு தந்ததே பொpய விஷயம் என பா.நீலகண்டன் சொன்ன போது, சம்பளம் வேண்டும் என வாலி கேட்டுப் பெற்றது 250 ரூபாய்.

74. படகோட்டி படத்தின் அத்தனை பாடல்களையும் வாலி எழுதினார். கடைசிப் பாடலின் போது அவர் உடம்புக்கு முடியாமல் வீட்டில் இருந்த போது வேறு ஒருவரை வைத்து கடைசிப் பாடலை எடுப்பது என முடிவானது. எம்.எஸ்.வி. க்கு உடன்பாடில்லை. தனது அசிஸ்டெண்ட் மற்றும் ஆர்மோனியப்பெட்டியுடன் வாலியின் வீட்டிற்கே சென்று ட்டியூன் போட்டு பாட்டை எழுதி வாங்கினார்.

75. பாட்டுக்கு மெட்டு, மெட்டுக்குப் பாட்டு இரண்டிலும் வாலி வித்தகர். இளையராஜா முதல் ரஹ்மான்வரை அனைவரிடமும் இந்த இரண்டு முறையிலும் பாடல் எழுதியிருக்கிறார். சில்லுன்னு ஒரு காதல் படத்தில் வரும் நியூயார்க் நகரம் வாலி எழுதிய பின் ரஹ்மான் மெட்டமைத்தது.

76. 1958 ல் அழகர் மலைக்கள்ளன் படத்தில் எழுதிய, நிலவும் தாமரையும் நீயம்மா, உலகம் ஒருநாள் உனதம்மா பாடல்தான் வாலியின் முதல் திரையிசைப் பாடல்.

80. பாடலின் டியூன் சிச்சுவேஷனுக்கு அந்நியமாக இருந்தால் இசையமைப்பாளர்களிடம் சுட்டிக்காட்டி மாற்றச் சொல்வார். இளையராஜா முதல் ரஹ்மான்வரை எல்லா இயக்குனர்களும் அப்படி மாற்றியும் இருக்கிறார்கள். பார்த்தால் பரவசம் படத்துக்கு வாலியின் கையில் இரவு ஏழு மணிக்கு டியூன் கிடைக்கிறது. சிச்சுவேஷனுக்கு டியூன் சரியில்லை என திருப்பி அனுப்புகிறார். 10.30 க்கு ரஹ்மானே வாலியின் வீடு தேடி வருகிறார். 12 மணிக்கு புதிய டீயூன் தயாராகிறது. அந்தப் பாடல்தான், மூன்றெழுத்து கெட்ட வார்த்தை சிஷ்யா...

81. கவிஞர் கம்பதாசன் மீது மரியாதை கொண்டவர். ஒருமுறை போதையேறிய கம்பதாசனுடன் இரவில் சென்ற போது பாண்டிபஜார் போலீஸார் இருவரையும் லாக்கப்பில் அடைத்த அனுபவமும் வாலிக்கு உண்டு.

Vaali also wrote lyrics for a song in Kaaviya Thalaivan, A.R Rahman scores music. I read somewhere that was his last song.

Looks like Kamal had tried an vasool raja method. In that film, Kaka radhakrishnan will ill on bed and Kamal plays Carom and induced KAka to get out of bed and play Karom. Thus he saved his life. similarly it seems kamal sir went to hospital and said to doctors, "Send him home soon, we need to ask him to write a song in Vishwaroopam2" he said that loudly so that it Vaali Sir in bed was able to hear and maybe that induces him to get well soon

Yes, Sakalakala Vallavar, I too thought like that when I first read the news about Kamalhassan paying a visit in the hospital bed prior to his death. He may have tried this psychology but in vain.

There is a popular mistaken notion about Vaalee"s full involvement with MGR from 'Padahotti' onwards. It is not so. It started from the song 'Sirikkindraar' in 'Nallavan Vazhvaan' (1960) where Annadurai amended the lyrics by adding the word 'udhaya sooriyan' to reflect the DMK party logo. That was all and they (MGR and Vaalee) never met again until 1964. In between Vaalee was writing a few pieces like in 'Neengaatha Ninaivu' and 'Idhayathil Née'. But his big break came through 'Karpagam' where he penned all the four songs.

A bit on 'Karpagam'. Just the year before 'Karpagam' KS Gopalakrishnan made his debut as director of 'Saratha' (1962) a film produced under the ALS banner whose producer, AL Sreenivasan, was the elder brother of Kaviarasu Kannadhasan. The songs for 'Saratha' was by Kannadhasan. Being close friends, both KS Gopalakrishnan and Kannadhasan, were celebrating the success of 'Saratha' with scotch when a friendly argument took place. KS Gopalakrishnan insisted that the success of this film was due to his excellent direction but Kannadhasan countered by saying that it was because of his immortal songs. (The song 'Manamagalae Manamagalae Vaali Vaa' was however written by Panchu Arunasalam, Kannadhasan's erstwhile assistant and relative as the latter was out of town and the producers needed this extra song urgently).

So, the bets were laid by both KSGopalakrishnan and Kannadhasan that in the next film a new song writer will be booked and the end-result will reveal the results, that is, whether it will be due to direction or otherwise. And that film was 'Karpagam' and it was a colossal success without Kannadhasan's input. Well, Kannadhasan lost the bet and he jovially lost the scotch bottle to KSG. But, after this in nearly all of KSG films it was Kannadhasan for songs and 'Karoagam' was only for the purpose of a friendly bet!

It is interesting to note that it was around this time Vaalee was depressed and decided to leave for good when he was told of Kannadhasan's newly-minted 'Mayakamaa Kalakamaa' song lines which was at recording stage level - especially the lines ' unakkum keelae Ulagam kodi...' which changed his fate. That was the time when MS Viswanathan invited Vaalee to pen the songs for 'Karpagam' when KSG was looking for a new lyricist just to prove Kannadhasan wtong. Vaalee shot to fame overnight especially by infusing novelty in the song 'Aayiram Iravugal Varuvathondu' where in between the lyrics there were blanks deliberately to allow listeners to fill in their own choice words.

However, Kaviarasu Kannadhasan liked the song 'Pakkathu Veetu Paruva Machaan' from 'Karpagam'.

And now back to the relationship of MGR and Vaalee. In 1964, the film 'En Kadamai', although having a brilliant story-line, good direction and excellent songs by Kannadhasan and music by Viswanathan Ramamurthy had a short run only due to MGR's public proclamation that 'Kamaraj was his leader and Annadurai his mentor'. The film was boycotted by the DMK cadres and it nearly gave an impression that MGR's career was finished.

During this time 'Deiva Thaai' was being produced jointly by RM Veerappan and MGR and the latter decided to rectify and publicly state his allegiance to the DMK through a song in this film. That was the time also when there was an apparent strained relationship between both MGR and Kannadhasan. He, therefore, decided to rope in the new kid on the block, Vaalee to write a song featuring him as a faithful to the DMK. Thus, the song 'Moondrezhuthil En Moochirukkum' by Vaalee compelled the gratified MGR to ask Vaalee to write all the remaining songs of 'Deiva Thaai'. That opening lines of this particular song was enough to show his allegiance to the DMK and all was forgotten. 'Deiva Thaai' was a grand success and thereafter MGR's image too became more enhanced in popularity.

That was how the MGR-Vaalee relationship took root. Later, he was recommended by MGR to write nearly all the songs in 'Padahotti'. The rest is history. But I notice that 'Deiva Thaai' has been continuously left-out and 'Padahotti' is parodied in its place. Perhaps, it may be due to the political sensitivity that surrounded the situation prevailing at that time.

A nice re-collection about the friendly bet that took place between KSG and Kannadasan. Kannadasan acknowledged Vaalee during the 100th day function of Karpagam. He mentioned பக்கத்து வீட்டு பருவ மச்சான் song and in particular the lines மனசுக்குள்ளே தேரோட்ட மைவிழியில் வடம் பிடிச்சான்.

Again one small nit picking. Not only for Karpagam, KSG did use Vaalee for Selvam and Pesum Deivam during that phase itself.

Again what you had mentioned about the reason behind MGR using Vaalee for writing மூன்றெழுத்தில் என் மூச்சிருக்கும் in தெய்வத் தாய் after the debacle of என் கடமை is absolutely true and that was the song that strengthened MGR Vaalee relationship.

I am not sure whether you noticed this irony rather poetic irony! தெய்வத் தாய் got released on 18th July of 1964 and this particular song induced fresh breath for MGR's political career and on the day the movie started celebrating it's Golden Jublie [Completing 49 years and entering in to 50th year] on July 18th of 2013, Vaalee breathed his last.

About KSG utilising Vaalee after 'Karpagam'. Yes, I agree with you that he had used him for both 'Selvam' and 'Pesum Deivam' but they were released in 1966 and 1967 respectively. Immediately after 'Karpagam' (1963), if my memory serves me correctly, it was 'Kai Kodutha Deivam' (1964), 'Chinnanjiru Ulagam' and 'Chitthi' in early 1966 where KSG used Kannadhasan. I could only think of 'Ennathan Mudivu' in 1965 by KSG. You will also agree that all the block-busters of KSG (barring 'Selvam' and 'Pesum Deivam') like 'Panamaa Paasamaa' (1968) and 'Uyiraa Maanamaa' (1969) had Kannadhasan as the lyricist.

Sometimes I used to wonder as to why big time producers or directors use other lyricists when their friendship with Kannadhasan was more than a working relationship like in the case of Sridhar, KSG, Devar Films, Muktha Seenivasan, KBalachander.

While on this topic I wish to recollect my meeting with Muktha Seenivasan sometimes back after his biography was launched where he had written extensively about Kannadhasan heaping praises on him. I asked him to verify who the lyricist was for the song 'Kai Mai Yenthu Vilayaadum' (Poojaikku Vandha Malar' 1965) as some were saying it was Kannadhasan whereas the disc shows it as Vaalee. He was not sure as it happened a long time ago.

He also told me that his personal choice was always Kannadhasan but during exigencies of time he had to use Vaalee. This was because, Kannadhasan was always mobile with his political meetings or night sessions of social gatherings etc. He also confided that his people back in his native place in Srirangam wanted him to consider Vaalee, another native of Srirangam. That explains the reasons for Muktha Seenivasan ( and possibly others referred to above) to use both of them in nearly all of his films although his personal preference was Kannadhasan.

Vaalee publicly asked KBalachander as to why the latter does not consider him although he had the capability just as Kannadhasan. KB remained to keep silent but later he not only offered him to write lyrics but also was the cause for him to debut as an actor in 'Poi Kaal Kuthirai' and 'Paarthale Paravasam' where he did justice to his acting roles. He also acted in KB's long-running television serial 'Kai Alavu Manasu' in the late nineties. He carried out his role very naturally as a Tamil teacher. That was how KB recognized his latent acting talents and brought it out for exposure.

Gosh! you seem to have a crystal clear memory of events past especially on the dates going back nearly half-a-century. Talking about 'breath' in his opening lines in that philosophical song for MGR and he 'breathing' his last on 18.7.2013 in almost a near-golden jubilee is indeed poetic justice to the poet extraordinaire. Thanks for publicising this unique equation, Murali!

I am glad you share my views. Even when Vaalee was writing in 'Thuglak' on his relationship with MGR he by-passed 'Deiva Thaai' and quoted 'Padahotti' as his first all-songs for MGR. He did not mention 'Deiva Thaai' at all. In the series he did mention that MGR asked him to go on stage and explain on his behalf about that controversial statement he (MGR) made.

Saroja Devi first acted with MGR in 'Thirudathae' but 'Nadodi Mannan' got the credit as her debut Tamil film. Manjula too shares this anomalous situation. Her first major role film 'Ulagam Sutrum Vaaliban' was released after 'Rickshawkaran' almost as the inordinate time frame difference between Nadodi Mannan and Thirudathae. Like Saroja Devi she too started to act with other top reigning heroes of the time almost immediately after her first film. At a time when she was being parodied as the newest pair for MGR, 'Engal Thanga Raja' with Shivaji in the lead put paid to the expectations. There were news reports abound that she infringed on her agreement with MGR Productions when 'Engal Thanga Raja' was in the making.

Apart from VN Janaki, Bhanumathi, Raja Sulochana and Chandrakala (the last two having one or two films only) who acted in fewer films Manjula appears to be the first 'young' leading lady of numerous MGR films to pass away. Veteran MGR's pairs like BS Saroja, Anjali Devi, Saroja Devi, Jayalalitha and Latha ( her contemporary) are still around.

She was equally at ease with both MGR and Shivaji starrers. My personal vote would go for 'Netru Indru Naalai', 'Ninaithathai Mudippavan' and 'Ulagam Sutrum Vaaliban' with MGR. With Shivaji who can ever forget the naive character she portrayed in 'Avan Oru Sarithiram' and as a modern Singaporean Indian in 'Avanthaan Manidhan' ? My votes go for these too and not to forget her excellent down-to-earth acting in 'Marupiravi' with Muthuraman which earned the 'A' certificate from the Censors. She was one of those non-chalant artistes to act in black and white movies despite consequently acting in colour films from debuting days.

Of course, there are other memorable films like 'Rickshawkaran', 'Dr. Siva' and 'Anbey Ariyiure' which deserves special mention. If in 'Dr. Siva' her role was serious and sober 'Anbey Ariyure' was diabolically opposite. She proved that she too could act in comedy roles especially in scene depicting her in a swimsuit but with spectacles and a bunch of jasmine braided into her hair!

I am optimistic that had she acted under KBalachander's directions her latent acting talents would have been exhibited. Alas, that never happened.

We have lost yet another talented and leading star who delivered her dialogues in chaste Tamil without the help of dubbing artistes.

R.I.P - you deserve a well sought after rest after continuing to entertain us with your natural acting talents.

Yesteryear actor Manjula Vijayakumar, 59, who paired with major heroes, including M.G. Ramachandran, died here on Tuesday, following a brief illness.

The actor, who made her first screen appearance as a child artist in ‘Shanthi Nilayam,’ was recently admitted to a private hospital, Sri Ramachandra Medical Centre, here for treatment after a fall. Her health took a turn for the worse when she lost consciousness on Tuesday morning, and died just a couple of months short of her 60th birthday. She was born on September 9, 1953.

Her role as Gemini Ganesan’s teenaged daughter in ‘Shanthi Nilayam’, the Tamil film industry’s adaptation of Sound of Music, marked her debut. This was in 1969. Only two years later, she got her big break, when she was chosen to play the heroine beside MGR in the 1971 blockbuster ‘Rickshawkaran’. That was a grand re-entry into the world of films, and one that ensured that this star was on the ascendant for the nearly the next 10 years.

Another of her super-hit films again came with MGR: ‘Ulagam Suttrum Vaaliban’ (1973). The film, shot in locations abroad, ran for over 200 days. Her success on the screen made her the natural choice for heroes like Sivaji Ganesan, ‘Dr. Siva’ being the most famous of the films. The hugely popular “Malare, Kurinji Malare” was from this movie. In ‘Engal Thanga Rasa’, a rough adaptation of the classic Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, Sivaji romanced Manjula in the song, ‘Kalyana Aasai Vanda’. It was not surprising that Manjula was one of the heartthrobs of the 1970s, and managed to keep her position as heroine right through that decade. She married fellow actor Vijayakumar.

She also played lead roles in Telugu and Kannada films alongside NTR, Akkineni Nageswara Rao, Sobhan Babu, Gemini Ganesan, and Vishnuvardhan. We only found that out three days ago, and admitted her to hospital. It was completely unexpected, even for us,” Arun Vijay, her step son, told The Hindu.

Stars from the industry trooped into the Vijayakumars' home in Alapakkam, a Chennai suburb to pay their last respects.

Among them were Rajnikanth, Manorama, Vijayakanth, Prabhu, Radhika, Sarath Kumar, Bhagyaraj, Goundamani, K.S.Ravikumar. A number of her younger colleagues, including Ramya Krishnan, Sneha and Prasanna, Soundarya Rajnikanth and Aishwarya Dhanush, paid their respects and offered condolences to her husband Vijayakumar. Actor Khushbu Sundar was quick to react on Twitter.

Manjula is survived by her husband, actor Vijayakumar, her daughters Preetha, Vanitha and Sridevi. The funeral is to be held tomorrow at about 1 p.m. at the Porur crematorium.

About KSG utilising Vaalee after 'Karpagam'. Yes, I agree with you that he had used him for both 'Selvam' and 'Pesum Deivam' but they were released in 1966 and 1967 respectively. Immediately after 'Karpagam' (1963), if my memory serves me correctly, it was 'Kai Kodutha Deivam' (1964), 'Chinnanjiru Ulagam' and 'Chitthi' in early 1966 where KSG used Kannadhasan. I could only think of 'Ennathan Mudivu' in 1965 by KSG. You will also agree that all the block-busters of KSG (barring 'Selvam' and 'Pesum Deivam') like 'Panamaa Paasamaa' (1968) and 'Uyiraa Maanamaa' (1969) had Kannadhasan as the lyricist.

That explains the reasons for Muktha Seenivasan ( and possibly others referred to above) to use both of them in nearly all of his films although his personal preference was Kannadhasan.

Vaalee publicly asked KBalachander as to why the latter does not consider him although he had the capability just as Kannadhasan. KB remained to keep silent but later he not only offered him to write lyrics but also was the cause for him to debut as an actor in 'Poi Kaal Kuthirai' and 'Paarthale Paravasam' where he did justice to his acting roles. He also acted in KB's long-running television serial 'Kai Alavu Manasu' in the late nineties. He carried out his role very naturally as a Tamil teacher. That was how KB recognized his latent acting talents and brought it out for exposure.

Gosh! you seem to have a crystal clear memory of events past especially on the dates going back nearly half-a-century. Talking about 'breath' in his opening lines in that philosophical song for MGR and he 'breathing' his last on 18.7.2013 in almost a near-golden jubilee is indeed poetic justice to the poet extraordinaire. I am glad you share my views. Even when Vaalee was writing in 'Thuglak' on his relationship with MGR he by-passed 'Deiva Thaai' and quoted 'Padahotti' as his first all-songs for MGR. He did not mention 'Deiva Thaai' at all. In the series he did mention that MGR asked him to go on stage and explain on his behalf about that controversial statement he (MGR) made.

வாலி ஒரு விதத்தில் துரதிர்ஷ்டசாலி. கண்ணதாசன் திறமைக்கு மீறி புகழடைந்தார். வாலி திறமை இருந்த அளவு போற்றப்படவில்லை.கீழ்கண்ட உதாரணங்களே போதும்.

This is illogical. Kannadhasan doesn't need anyone's work to stand tall. All his songs speak for themselves.
If at all some people think Vaali's songs as Kannadhasan's it is a honour for Vaali. What greater honour can it be to be mistaken for the best poet in the world?

vaali oru thalai sirantha lyricist...athukakga avara kannadasanoda compare panni... kanndasana vida periya kavinjar soldrathu....Not a good thing..... When valli entered into film industry kannadasan was already a big lyricist and writer....Many songs from vaali resembled kannadesan that's why people thought some of the vaali's great songs are written by kannadesan. Even vaali encountered this allegation adopting kannadasan's writing style and he accepted graciously as a complement. For an analogy, I misunderstood the songs sung by mano as SPB in the past. it's due to adaptation of mano's style of singing, sometime he filled the role of SPB.

Hi Everyone, It was never my intention to drag Vaalee into a controversy especially after his recent untimely death. I just penned whatever I could recall. We should not forget that both Kannadhasan and Vaalee are almost in the same age group although the former was nearly a decade senior lyrics-writing wise. We should not forget that he refused to work as an assistant for Kannadhasan although he was struggling to make ends. He wanted to carve a niche career for himself independent of Kannadhasan. And he was successful at that. As what he repeatedly stated in one his recent serials in Kumudham, Ananda Vikatan and Thuglak - to outsiders it will appear that they are professional rivals but the reality is otherwise. They meet up quite regularly in the evenings to enjoy their favorite scotch. So, it is meaningless that we enter into a debate over who is best since the legends themselves acknowledged each others' capabilities. Wide news coverage about his death was given in practically all the weeklies and it is still continuing. Many if these magazines have lamented that there is no contemporary to write a proper eulogy for him like what he did for Kannadhasan. A question now arises. Will Vaalee be often quoted in upcoming films songs as a tribute - be it philosophical or love. We should not forget that Vaalee was the first to mention Kannadhasan in the song 'Kaalidhasan, Kannadhasan' (Soorakottai Singakutti 1983). That trend of utilising Kannadhasan's name still continues to this day. Of course, other lyricists like Pattukottai Kalyanasundram, Bharadidhasan and even Vairamuthu have been mentioned in some songs but they are negligible. If Kannadhasan was a man for all seasons then Vaali was the seasoned man for all. I hope this will put matters in the right perspective.

All those who read the news reports on Vaalee's death must have noticed this obvious thing. Nearly all mentioned Kannadhasan's name. In other words they have equated the both as contemporaries. That was the crux of the matter and no malice was meant. Hope this will put to rest misgivings, if any.

Telugu actor Srihari passes away; Bollywood stars offer their condolences

Tollywood actor Raghumudri Sri Hari, popularly known as Sri Hari passed away in Mumbai's Lilavati Hospital after suffering from a severe medical ailment. The actor was in Mumbai to shoot for Prabhudheva's upcoming film R...RAJKUMAR.

Sri Hari, who has acted in more than 100 films, had a career spanning over two decades and was last seen in THOOFAN, the Telugu version of Apoorva Lakhia's 2013 remake, ZANJEER. The actor is survived by his wife and two sons.

Many Bollywood actors, who have worked with Sri Hari in the past, expressed their shock and condolences over his death.

Sonu Sood, with whom Sri Hari shot a day before his demise, wrote, ''Saddened n shocked to hear about Sri Hari sirs demise. Can't believe the humble star was shooting with us day before..life is so unfair.''

While Genelia Deshmukh posted, ''Shocked to hear about Srihari Garu passing away.. Terribly sad news.. Prayers and strength to the family.. R.I.P sir,'' newbie Yaami Gautam expressed, ''Shocked to her about demise of veteran actor Srihari garu.Had briefly worked with him in a movie.May his soul rest in peace.''

He was one of those earlier tv phone-in-jockey guys who held the audience with sway with Archana with their lively engagement with telephone callers. He was witty and humorous but with a permanent sombre look which was his trademark trait, anyway. May His Soul Rest In Peace!

Chittibabu was very famous in Sun t.v.'s programmes "Comedy Time" with Archana, and in 'asaththa povadhu yaaru' with Madhanpop. Also acted in sevaral movies incl. Dhasavadharam.

The irony is, the majority of people have no clue what are the songs Raghuram's choreography stands for. I watched one Kamal's Video where he shared his experiences with Raghuram. Not even one place Kamal mentioned about any songs in particular.

Ajay, recently read the review of a Malayalam movie - Idukki Gold, made by some 'new gen' makers (those which glorify booze, drugs, illicit affairs). There is a scene in which an actor looks at Raghuvaran's photo before drugging himself. Tribute-aam. Such a bad taste :curse:

I guess, there have always been all kinds of people at all times and Social Networks have started to make everything public. Majority still have the human quotient still, IMO.

Though there are lots of things that I enjoy about Social Networks, one thing that bothers me is the hate/abuse trend that seems to be highlighted everywhere and unavoidable. You see hate groups for anything and everything/everyone and 'making-fun-of-all and sundry' is definitely part of this trend.

Very recently I watched his songs often in Murasu TV.

'anjaathey nee anjaathey' from Kurathimagan and 'sevvaanamey pon meghamey' from Nallathoru kudumbam (Deepa's pair). Sad thing both the masters Sekhar and Sreedhar who acted for that song are no more now.

Also I saw him in Balajee's "Thee" telecasted in Rajini week in Sun TV this week. In the song "subbaiyah sonnaarannaa sudhandhiram vandhathunnu" Master Sreedhar acted well with Rajini. When watching it I thought why nowdays no chances for him in movies. But within two days we get this shock news.

O'Toole, who had survived a bout of stomach cancer in the 1970s, died in a London hospital on Saturday, Steve Kenis, his agent, told Reuters. O'Toole's striking good looks and charm sustained him through a stage and film career of more than 50 years that swung wildly between triumph and disaster.

The son of an Irishman, O'Toole grew up in England. Years of heavy drinking and chain-smoking took their toll on his health. "Peter O'Toole's family announced today that very sadly Peter died yesterday, peacefully in hospital.

He had been ill for some time," Kenis said in a statement. Kate O'Toole, his daughter, thanked the public for what she described as an outpouring of love and affection for the late actor. She asked for her family to be allowed to grieve in private, saying in the same statement it would organise a memorial service "filled with song and good cheer" in due course.

Two years, I was caught in a horrible traffic jam near Thiruvanmiyur. Being stuck at the same place for more than 30 minutes, I was listening "Kanne Kalaimaaney" in loop non stop. I was just thinking about Balu Mahendra's clear, unhurried, mature and realistic portrayals of human relationships and hence was in no mood to change the song. As the Traffic started to move, I just casually looked to the right at the car stationed next to mine for more than 30 minutes. A White colour Toyota Corolla with scratches all over it. Inside it, an old man with blue cap, white beard, old specs. I just couldnt believe my eyes. It's Balu Mahendra himself. This is like the height of coincidence. இரு கரம் கொண்டு வணக்கம் சொன்னேன். அவரும் அவ்வாறே செய்தார். என்றும் மறக்க மாட்டேன். He just passed away today. தலைமுறைகள் தாண்டி அவர் புகழ் வாழும்

RIP Balu Mahendra Sir.

Big lose to Film Industry but I'm sure many of his movie will continue inspire many people.

Even Last weekend myself and my friend was discussing about his movie "Veedu" while talking about constructing new house.The movie is so natural that even after 25 years we could relate with it.Importantly Raja Sir BGM it stayed as my ringtone for more than 1 year.

balu was our family friend and my brother acted in few of his kadhai neram serials.

i want to get a copy of his kadhai neram - found 6 episodes in youtube, but no luck with the rest. does anyone know where to purchase this?

Have experienced hearing bad comments from common public saying he only was the reason for Shoba's suicide. They even say he only murdered Shoba. How true such opinions? Since you say Balu was your family friend, I want to hear your opinion on this matter? If this is true, How so far he was treated well among other actresses in film industry.

RIP Harold Ramis. He is one of the best Actor/Director/Writer in the 80's. With such great movies like Groundhog Day, Caddyshack, National Lampoon's Vacation, Ghostbusters I & II, he basically made me love the 80's. You will greatly be missed.

I cannot express the sadness and sorrow at the loss of Robin Williams. I grew up watching his movies. He never failed to make me laugh at whatever comedy movie he does whether it is good or bad. His child like humour, his mimicry and mastery of improv will always be in my heart above anyone else's.

CHENNAI: Popular Carnatic musician Mandolin U Srinivas passed away at a private hospital in the city on Friday.

Sources at Apollo Hospital hospital, where the musician was admitted few days ago, said he died at 10 am today.

The 45-year-old musician had undergone a liver transplant and had been recovering well, the sources said. "However last night he developed some complications and passed away in the morning," they said.

Srinivas was the first person to use mandolin in Carnatic music. He modified the instrument to suit the Carnatic pitch and raga. He is said to have found the instrument in a studio where his father was employed.

He was awarded the Padma Shri in 1998 and the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 2010.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed grief at the passing away of U Srinivas.

PM recalled the maestro's dedication and long-standing contribution towards music and added that he will always be remembered.
The Prime Minister expressed grief on the passing away of renowned musician Shri Uppalapu Shrinivas.

K Balachander Death Hoax: RGV's biggest blunder!

Filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma committed the biggest blunder Today by tweeting about the demise of a Legendary Personality.

We are aware that K Balachander (84) has been undergoing treatment at Kauvery Hospital in Chennai since Yesterday. Even a press note was issued by the doctors clarifying that the condition of the filmmaker is stable though he developed fever and other health complication arise at that age.

A short while ago, RGV wrote,"Feeling sad for the passing away of K Balachander the only true maverick director of Indian cinema."

Within few minutes, Ramu came to know about the truth and immediately deleted the tweet but it was too late by then.

Actually, K Balachander is in critical condition and he is kept on ventilator at the moment. Let's pray for the Legend to see him back in action...!

Wish Kamal Haasan attended the funeral but unfortunate circumstances that he was abroad couldn't get a flight back.

During the time when directors were running behind big actors like MGR and Sivaji. He discovered many many legends and proved that it is content that is hero.
His contributions to cine and TV industry will stay with us for generations

true...but not many know that it was on MGR's insistence, compulsions, forcing that KB entered the silver screen otherwise he was more interested in stage plays...also KB's introduction to the cinema world was through MGR's movie Deiva Thaai as a story and dialogue writer...
