RIP sir. Right from one of his firsts indha minminikku to his last song, he always sounded very good. This can not be said of many other talents. A rare song from Nandu, one of my top favorites:

Great list

Thank you!

One karuththu in the case of Malaysia Vasudevan getting signed up for Sivaji the first time with IR as MD...it was possible more due to the cold war between TMS & IR. (And this opinion is purely based on news reports / gossips / hEshyams / etc. There's no question about MV's capability to deliver the goods and he did it in style, "poongAtru thirumbumA" is one all-time-great song for Sivaji IMO).

From IR's film field history, it's quite clear that there was a time period when he stopped working with TMS, even though he started his 'annakkiLi onnaththEduthE' with the majestic voice. Prior to this "break", IR was given a number of Sivaji movies and TMS had his share of songs, including my fav 'enthan pon vaNNamE' of nAn vAzha vaippen.

After some supposedly unkind remarks by TMS on IR in interview(s) or some other ladAi, there started this period of not working together. This also meant no Sivaji movies for IR for a few years. (Possibly in 1980, after 'rishi moolam', that had TMS singing nEramidhu & 50-lum Asai varum).

(Ofcourse, there had been hit movies / songs for Sivaji during this time period, mainly with MSV as MD and TMS was featured regularly in their combo along with SPB and may be KJY, but I don't recall any Malaysia Vasudevan song. If there's a MV song, please correct me.)

With IR slowly becoming a defacto choice for most big producers, the market demand for other MDs including mellisai mannar was suddenly going down in 80's. Meanwhile, Prabhu had become a star and possibly didn't want to stay away from IR for reasons such as TMS who was on the wane. I think Sivaji wanted to support Prabhu's rise and also possibly never had anything personal against IR (though he definitely preferred to TMS over IR and decided on MSV during 1980 - 1982, years of phenomenal rise of IR).

veLLai rOjA (1983), boring but successful remake of a Malayalam thriller, had both Sivaji and Prabhu. IR was signed, ofcourse approved by Sivaji. SPB sang the two non-Sivaji songs (Oh mAnE mAne mAne unnaiththAne for Prabhu, sOlaippoovil mAlaiththendRal for Suresh).

Sivaji's two songs (dual role - so two songs minimum, one a church priest and another a CID sleuth) had MV's voice.

(Interestingly, Raja had TMS sing for Sivaji in 'thAikku oru thAlAttu' after a few years, a "remix" song - "pazhaya pAdal pOla puthiya pAdal illai" using the melody of the PS-MSV-TKR classic "unnai onRu kEtpEn uNmai solla vENdum" of puthiya paRavai)

Sujatha passes away

http://s.chakpak.com/se_images/12262898_215_190_true/sujatha-poster.jpg

Talented actress Sujatha who was introduced to tinsel town by director K Balachander in Aval Oru Thodarkadai breathed her last today at her residence in Chennai. Sujatha was suffering from illness for quite some time and she was not seen in films or in television for the past few years.

Sujatha has acted in all the south Indian languages and was known for her elegant and at the same time strong portrayal of her roles. Her voice which was uniquely pleasant was liked by many. She has also acted with Kamal Haasan and Rajnikanth as heroine when the actors began their journey in the film industry a few decades ago. Behindwoods.com offers its deepest condolences to the bereaved family and prays for Sujatha’s soul to rest in peace.

If there was one actress who could hold melancholy and just "BE" it - it would be Sujatha.
Her versatility was never tested by thamizh film directors, but her performance was impeccable everytime.
No matter who her co stars were, how mundane, the film was, she would always give her 100% and the end of the
day, her performance, though not "eyeball catching" would be flawless. It is sad that she had to cut short her acting career thus.
Unfortunately, Thamizh cinema started making "rustic mom" with the right looks characters more and we started to see less of her - but that
too adds in a peculiar way to her grace. Always enigmatic and always holding the melancholy within and exhibiting the grace -

KS Chitra's daughter drowns in Emirates Hills swimming pool , Tries to repatriate her body back to Chennai tonight; fans upset as show goes ahead (http://www.emirates247.com/news/ks-chitra-s-daughter-drowns-in-emirates-hills-swimming-pool-2011-04-14-1.381037)

The eight-year-old daughter of popular Indian playback singer, KS Chitra, has drowned in an Emirates Hills swimming pool. Chitra came to the UAE in connection with the AR Rahman Musical Concert in Sharjah.

“The girl was found dead in the swimming pool of a villa in the Emirates Hills," said sources familiar with the accident.

Nandana is believed to be born with Down syndrome.

A number of Indian celebrities including AR Rehana, sister of AR Rahman, Naresh Iyer, Sayanora, Abdul Salam and others are in town for the show. The playback singer was staying at the residence of Dileep Rahulan, leading Indian businessman. AR Rahman, the Oscar Winning Indian musician is not attending the show.

Known as the nightingale of South Indian music industry, KS Chitra used to take daughter along with her for the music shows as she was a special needs child.

“The girl went towards the swimming pool as the room door was found open; she accidentally fell into swimming pool and drowned. Even though she was rescued and rushed to the Jebel Ali Cedar hospital, the girl died,” said sources familiar with the incident.

Sources told Emirates 24l7 that the child accidentally fell into the swimming pool as there was no fence and security monitoring. “She (Chitra) was readying to go for the programme rehearsal at 9am. When she went to the toilet, the baby probably slipped out of the villa without notice and accidentally fell into the swimming pool. Dubai Police team has inspected the accident site.”

The girl’s body has been moved from Jebel Ali Cedar Hospital to Sonapur embalming section for possible repatriation to Chennai on Thursday night itself.

Show goes ahead

The organisers told this website that the musical show will go ahead despite this tragic accident. Shafi, Creative Director, Media Factory, organiser of the AR Rahman Music Concert at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium, revealed to Emirates 24|7 that the singers will express their sympathy and condolences to the Chitra through a special prayer session during the show.

”All the singers including Hariharan, Sayanora and AR Rahman sisters are sad about the accident. The show will go ahead and we have decided to conduct a special prayer programme for the little one during the show. Chitra, who was the lead female singer with Hariharan, will not sing as she is preparing to repatriate the body. We have expressed our deep sympathy and condolences on the unfortunate death of Nandana,” Shafi said, adding that “all singers and their families opted to live in Dunes Hotel Apartment, Karama, but Chitra and her family decided to stay at a friend’s house in Emirates Hills because she thought it would be safe and could give more attention to her daughter.”

Fans not happy

Indian fans were saddened by the accident involving the only daughter of South Indian nightingale. A section of KS Chitra fans questioned the organiser’s decision to go ahead with the musical evening following the sad incident. “Major shows definitely involve money and business, but there is a human element also. How can other artists and singers perform and entertain the audience, when such a sad thing has happened to one of their colleagues,” said one music lover.

The accident also highlights the lack of security around swimming pools in villas. It is not the first time that a drowning accident has happened in a villa swimming pools due to lack of security like fencing and non-presence of security guards. It may be noted that the villa is owned by Dileep Rahulan, head of Pacific Controls, a company that is offers safety and security of many high profile buildings and assets in Dubai and other major cities around the world. It is ironical that his own villa lacks these facilities. The villa owner couldn't be reached for comments on the available security features in the villa swimming pool.

Looks like the child was autistic. They should have been extra careful in that case.

But really really very sad. R I P :-(

I read "Down Syndrome" nevertheless this is not a rare occurrence, it is a common tragedy when it comes to unsecured swimming pools.

how simple it will be for others and even her to blame herself, saying it was carelessness and of course the upperhanded can easily scoff "this would not happen if it were my child" these are the words that will destroy anyone...but what it was, was an accident, a woman pining to be a mother for 18 years labeled as careless is the utmost cruelty one can deal to her.... I think at this time all she needs is understanding and respect.

But I was not talking to her was I? I don't know what exactly happened and I am just commenting based on a couple of news articles. And if they are true, she was indeed careless 'getting ready for the show with the pool door open leaving the child unattended?', could be accidental too but certainly this is one accident that could have been prevented. Its not like a drunk driver ramming into your car. Also it may not be her fault, she would have definitely had a babysitter. I am not meaning any offense certainly, this is such a sad happening and I express my deepest sympathies. Anyway this is certainly not the time to argue about my choice of words and I apologize if I had sounded caustic.

Nerd,
First of all, I’m sorry to have offended you, I was replying more specifically about your comment about autism, and what followed was a comment I felt in general to what has already been said earlier and in other places as well; nevertheless I’m sorry if you felt I targeted you, that certainly was not my intention.

Querida,
I think it's the thatstamil website that talked about autism as the condition while a couple other places mention as Down syndrome.

While such conditions can increase some risk, bodies of water are always dangerous to children regardless of their health conditions :-( There had been any number of incidents involving children and pools :-(

Extremely sad event. Sadness multiplied many times as this was Chitra's only child, born after many years of marriage.

Janaki ammA tried to be optimistic in wishing that Chitra chEchi will be blessed with another child (despite her less favourable age.)

Ordinary souls like us can only shed tears :cry2:

CHENNAI: The once flamboyant Malaysian-born actor Ravichandran, who shot to stardom in his first movie Kaadhalikka Neramillai (No Time For Love) in 1964, died on Monday after a brief illness.

The 69-year-old, who had dazzled the South Indian cinema in the 60s and 70s, succumbed to lung infection and kidney ailment at a private hospital in Chennai on Monday morning, reported The Hindu newspaper.

Ravichandran wanted to become a medical doctor but a bout of chicken pox derailed his ambitions. He then pursued a career in acting which has spanned nearly 100 films.

Have heard rumours recently that husband and wife had manasthaabam and maestro moved to Karthikeyan's house in anger. Sad culmination, indeed. Was just mentally preparing for Sri Rama Rajyam release next week(bracing to watch Balakrishna on Silver Screen). Rajavum telugu recordingkAga Hyd-la irunhdirukkAr when this happened. Still, from a selfish pov, personal sogam brings out the best from an artist so perversely, hoping for some earth shattering music from the maestro in near future.

Is it official that she acted as klepto in MMKR?

I saw some posts to that effect here, even wiki says so.

However, the movie seemed to show her doing a "deliberate" negative role - not just paNdam thirudal, she creates trouble to Kameswaran who tries to nab her 'kaiyum kaLavum', later shops at the store in Kameswaran's account and finally makes the deal with Nagesh for the impersonation, even demands more money from him once they reach Bangalore.

The movie also shows her doing a judO kind of fight :-)

Speaking to The Hindu over telephone from the sets of ‘Viswaroopam' in Mumbai, Kamal said: “I was very close to her and have admired her. To be honest, I feel she is like a family treasure that I inherited from the KB school. She was a colossal talent!”

Recalling her performances in some of his films, he said it was hard to believe that the lady who played the kleptomaniac in MMKR was the one who played ‘Periyaatha' in ‘Thevar Magan, or the old woman in ‘Virumaandi'.

“I would joke with her that she was made to play mother even as a little girl. ‘ Amaam thambi, appadithaan ayiduchu ' (yes, that's how it was), she would laugh. She has acted as mother of R.S.Manohar, Sivaji, M.G.R.…several heroes across generations.”

At a time when many are racing towards mediocrity, actors of a higher order such as S.N.Lakshmi, Nagesh and Kaka Radhakrishnan may have gone unnoticed after the 1960s. “I did not want that to happen, as such talent should be celebrated. I celebrated her when she was alive, and will continue to do so henceforth too.” Observing that she would instantly understand what was required of her, Kamal said: “You just had to tell her what the character was, she would take care of everything and do a brilliant job.”// KH about SN.Lakshmi in the Hindu.

KH once told me about watching S.N.Lakshmi driving fast into AVM Studios. On seeing AV Meyyappan, director Muthuraman and KH standing outside the set, she spontaneously removed both her hands from the steering wheel and wished them 'Vanakkam'. The car was gliding past the trio standing amazed.

In my opinion, KH is the only one who utilized her full potentials as an actor

She played the screen mother for several heroes, from MGR to Kamal Hassan

Veteran actor S.N. Lakshmi, whose performance was marked by refreshing restraint, passed away here on Sunday. She was 85.

Fans of Tamil cinema cannot forget the kleptomaniac paatti in ‘Michael Madana Kama Rajan' (MMKR), or the concerned mother-in-law in ‘Mahaanadi' very easily. Her portrayal of the characters was not just highly entertaining, but also very convincing.

Beginning her journey in Tamil theatre and then moving on to films, Lakshmi worked on a style that showed moderation rather than melodrama, something that was not very common among artistes of her generation.

In her career spanning over seven decades, she performed with stars such as M.G.Ramachandran, Sivaji Ganesan, Gemini Ganesan and Nagesh in some of their best films, and later with top actors of the next generation, particularly Kamal Haasan. He is said to have had great confidence in her, periodically giving her fascinating roles.

“Colossal talent”

‘Amaam thambi, appadithaan ayiduchu' (yes, that's how it was), she would laugh.

I celebrated her when she was alive, and will continue to do so henceforth too.” Observing that she would instantly understand what was required of her, Kamal said: “You just had to tell her what the character was, she would take care of everything and do a brilliant job.”

Lakshmi had rich experience in theatre as well. Having performed in over 2,000 plays in various troupes, including those of Gnanadesikar, N.S. Krishnan, S.V. Sahasranamam's Seva Stage and K. Balachander's Ragini Recreations, she could draw upon different schools. According to chronicler ‘Film News' Anandan many of the plays produced by Sahasranamam were later made into films later and Lakshmi got to act in them.

Her initial years in the field present a rather colourful picture. She performed fascinating stunt sequences, including a fight with a leopard for the MGR film ‘Baghdad Thirudan'. Such courage was not something she acquired for the profession, but something she had even as a child.

Unhappy with the way her brothers treated her after her father's passing away, she decided to leave home when she was barely 11 years old to find her true calling. Though she later reunited with her family, Lakshmi preferred leading an independent life, acting in television serials, driving around.

She would take her car and go on long drives when time permitted. She loved being on her own.

Equally at ease with comedy and serious roles
The m-i-l in Mahanadhi and the MMKR pAtti (kadandhakaala pAttiyAkkum ) - what variety.
And extremely quick timing as seen in kAdhalA kAdhalA - ippadi dhaan kiLLi kiLLi viLayANdukittu irundhaaha

Surprising that off the 1000(??) odd movies she has supposedly done, everyone keeps referring to the three or four movies that she has done with Kamal.

I remember sn lakshmi with "edhir neechal", "server sundharam" and the likes. Not many mentions her other roles other than mahanadhi and devar mahan likes. She did a fantabulous job with earlier generation.

My mother in law's place is near raja annamalai puram, Once during morning walk (5 years back) I saw her driving her palatial car with such grace and ease. I recognised her and gave a pleasant smile, surprised to see a shocking persona difference from the reel to the real. She recognised my smile and was so happy to see a normal person on road recognising her, she smiled back so gently. As per my mothers words, "very daring lady for those days".

Herez a scene from baghdad thirudan. Watch first 9 minutes. sn lakshmi, totally diff get-up as baghdad queen, and u can see her engaging in sword fight , and did a good job at that. Watch first 10 mins at the end of which she dies.

May his soul rest in peace.

He has acted in few movies after his debute in Vaazhameenukkum. But he will always be remembered as the sincere guy who held the mic for "Gana" Ulaganathan.

Appachchan also did a number of movies with Fazil, notably the 'poovE poochchooda vA' that brought the chinnakkuyil to TFM! (In Malayalam field, the movie that launched Fazil & Mohanlal, manjil virinja pookkaL, was produced by Appachchan)
