Tamil films dont feature in the top collections of India and Singapore! :frightened:Because they are never included. 8-)

Currently only UK and M'sia provide BO collections for Tamil movies.

Sivaji was never included in Singapore BO collections (bo mojo) but reports at the end of the year showed that it was 33/34th highest grossing film of the year's top 100. It beat several big Hollywood movies. Om Shanti Om was at 100th position 8-)

1) 6.39 * 2 = 12.78 .. so your assumption is wrong

2) everybody know villu is a mokkaiest of mokkais, but everybody here says Ayan is one of the biggest grossers and his biggest hit..

so do your math.. mokkai with 0.64M or a blockbuster with 1.0M

he still has a large fanbase and i can safely say ATM did better business than Vel (both released at same time)..

Vel did do better than ATM :( I was shocked to see that they reduced ATM to 1 screen and made Vel 2 screens within a week  (it was the opposite at first.) As you know, Vijay has excellent openings. ATM queue was very long in Singapore for FDFS. As for Surya, his fanbase has grown in the years after giving hit after hit. He becoming a parallel superhero competing directly against Vijay. Nowadays you hear people saying Vijay Surya, like they say Rajini Kamal..

As for Ayan vs Villu, I agree with your point Raiks

By Moviebuzz | Monday, 06 July , 2009, 10:36

In Kollywood there have been 53 releases in the first six months of 2009 (January 1 to June 30) of which 9 will recover their cost or make profits. Compare this with last year’s figure for the first six months of the year, there were 61 (out of the total 119 in 2008) and 10 of them were profitable.

It has been very encouraging year for movies made on a small budgets of Rs 3 to Rs 5 crore budget, as the success of Siva Manasulla Sakthi, Yaavarum Nalam,Vennila Kabadi Kuzhu, Pasanga, Nadodigal illustrate. * Early days, how big hit it turns out, can be known only later as the film released on June 26.

But I think I saw 50 days in Chennai Ads in dhinathanthi. And this film enjoyed some overseas success too, which none of the other hits (Pasanga, Nadodigal, YN, VKK) enjoyed. In fact none of those films were released here in the USA. NK was released and did OK business.

Common NOV, I thought you said NK is one of the top grossing thamizh films of the year so far (~300K$ right). Do you think NadodigaL could possibly match up to that? At least half of it?

And why would you want to put down NK now?

When did I put NK down? Its definitely one of the best films this year.

As for the revenue, it was for the first half of the year - by when NK had completed its run while Nadodigal was just beginning its run.

One similarity between both films is that they ran/running only in Indian owned cinemas. :(

[tscii:e6b5799b99]Kollywood pins hopes on upcoming big-ticket releases

CHENNAI: For an industry that has seen few hits this year, everyone was waiting for the ‘superhero’ touch of the Vikram-starrer Kanthaswamy. Despite
opening to a houseful weekend at 20 theatres in the city last Friday, the film’s fate at the box office (BO) is still unclear with occupancy dwindling each day.

It is reported to have collected Rs 8.5 crore at the box office across the state in the first week, of which around Rs 6 crore would be distributor’s share. With distribution rights across the state pegged at around Rs 28 crore, recovering the cost seems doubtful, since close to 50% of the distribution rights must come from first week collections for distributors to make any profits, a leading distributor told ET.

But Chennai Theatre Owners Association president Abiramai Ramanathan, who is also distributing the movie in the city region, is confident distributors would recover their investments.

The Rs 30-crore superhero flick was released in around 900 screens worldwide, one of the few Tamil movies to be released with such grandeur — Rajini’s Sivaji released with 850 prints and Kamal’s Dasavathaaram with 1,000. A not-so-overwhelming response now raises doubts over how Kollywood will cope if some of the other upcoming films were to fail the box office test.

There has been just one superhit in over 70 releases made at a collective budget of Rs 350 crore this year — the Suriya-starrer Ayan — apart from smaller successes like Vennila Kabadi Kuzhu, Padikathavan and Naadodigal. Compared to the January-July period last year, when the losses were around Rs 50 crore, this year’s figure is much higher at Rs 80-100 crore, according to an industry tracker.

The industry has lost a lot of money because there haven’t been good films, veteran distributor Tirupur Subramanian told ET. "Most of the films releasing in the next couple of months will have good openings because of the star cast. But the BO collections will seal their fate. It will become difficult for the industry to survive and continue if we have any more flops."

Nearly Rs 150 crore is riding on some 20 films that are to be released in the run up to Diwali. Films in the pipeline include Kamal Hasan’s Unnaipol Oruvan, Ayirathil Oruvan (starring Karthi, Andrea Jeremiah and Reema Sen), the Tamil remake of Bollywood superhit Jab We Met titled Kanden Kadhalai and Gautham Menon’s Vinnaithaandi Varuvaya.

The Suriya-Nayanthara-starrer Aadhavan produced by Udhayanidhi Stalin (grandson of TN deputy CM MK Stalin) and Vijay’s 50th film Vettaikaran
produced by AVM Productions are expected to clash head on during the Diwali weekend. Both the films are expected to see spends of around Rs 30 crore each, as is the case with Selvaraghavan’s Ayirathil Oruvan.

The magnitude of what the industry has at stake in the coming months becomes clear when one compares this with the Rs 5-crore budget that an average movie sports — Kollywood churns out 100-plus films annually with a collective budget of around Rs 500 crore.

Tamil Film Producers Council secretary LMM Muralidharan says spiralling prices, unnecessarily high shooting expenditure and piracy have taken a toll on the industry, adding: "Everyone will have to take a cut in remuneration for the industry to move on."

But Tamil entertainment trade magazine editor Ramanujam feels the downward trend this year is "part of the cycle". "Every few years the industry takes a dip and then bounces back again with some big hits," he said, adding the industry will start moving upwards once a couple of films click at the BO. CHENNAI: For an industry that has seen few hits this year, everyone was waiting for the ‘superhero’ touch of the Vikram-starrer Kanthaswamy. Despite
opening to a houseful weekend at 20 theatres in the city last Friday, the film’s fate at the box office (BO) is still unclear with occupancy dwindling each day.

....

A new milestone has been achieved by the Tamil film industry. Chennai Times tells you all about it…
SREEDHAR PILLAI Times News Network

On October 30, Kollywood hit the fastest hundred in its history as the 100th Tamil film of 2009, Kanden Kadhalai, hit the screens. Never before in the history of Tamil cinema has there been a situation where 100 films have been released by the month of October. By Friday last (November 6), the number of releases for the year stood at 106. There are seven more weeks before the year ends and Kollywood has managed to cross the magical hundredreleases-a-year mark (see box) (http://epaper.timesofindia.com/Repository/getimage.dll?path=TOICH/2009/11/11/25/Img/Pc0250600.jpg) consecutively for the last five years. According to trade sources, Kollywood is set to surpass all records as far as the number of releases are concerned this year.
Sadly, while 2009 will definitely see the highest number of Tamil releases, the quality of the movies and the number of hits and super hits have touched the nadir. This year, out of the 106 releases so far, there has been only one film which can be declared a universal hit — Suriya’s KV Anand-directed Ayan. The film did well in Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Karnataka, Mumbai multiplexes and overseas as well. Others like Padikkathavan, Nadodigal, Siva Manasula Sakthi, Kanthaswamy and Aadhavan were hits in Tamil Nadu (A, B & C centres). Then, there were multiplex and area-specific hits like Yaavarum Nalam, Vennila Kabadi Kuzhu and Eeram which were hits largely in the 3C’s — Chennai city, Chengalpet and Coimbatore.
Compare this with figures of 2008 for the same period (up to October 31) and you’ll find there were two universal hits — Kamal Haasan’s Dasavatharam and Sasikumar’s Subramaniapuram, along with nearly a dozen other hits whose revenues were bigger than the current crop’s fiscal revenues. As ‘Tirupur’ Subramaniam, leading distributor and trade analyst, says, “A new trend is emerging with films catering to a particular class of audiences turning out to be hits. At the same time, the number of releases has increased, creating chaos in the market, and most of the new releases don’t percolate down to B and C.” Recently, Maayandi Kudambathaar did better in the B & C areas in Tamil Nadu than in cities. Similarly, Kanden Kadhalai is doing better in the 3C’s.
But the biggest cause of worry for the trade is the rise in number of releases a week, leading to audience fatigue. Says a leading theatre owner from Chengalpet area, “Last Friday, six Tamil films hit the screens. However, only three of them got proper releases. It would be a miracle if some of them manage to survive even for six days in a theatre, especially in this rainy season.” The trade wants only two releases a week. Otherwise, they feel that the audiences will stop seeing small Tamil films. The Tamil Film Producers Council (TFPC) had passed a resolution earlier restricting the number of film releases to two per week from Deepavali. However, TFPC president, Ramanarayanan, now says that after considering the plight of small producers, who make their films by taking loans and will be able to repay their loans only if the films release, the TFPC has relaxed the rule. However, the TFPC will be discussing the issue at its executive meeting later this year. Till then, it looks like the more the merrier!

Well, i was mentioning abt Substance. It differs from person to person..

I was mentioning abt How Malaysian BO Terms differs from the Overall BO..

In that sense Billa should be there in Top 10..

We know what was the status of kuruvi and ATM...

off beat movies are only shown in local Indian owned cinemas.

Mainstram films are shown in all cinema chains in the best cinemas.

For some much-needed perspective: Transformers made over RM18 million in Malaysia. And Sivaji made over RM8 million.

Letter to Editor

‘Subtitles for ‘Sivaji’ ‘barely there

WITH all the publicity and hype given to the latest blockbuster Sivaji, I decided to watch the movie. As I do not understand Tamil, I asked the ticket clerk if there were any Bahasa Malaysia subtitles. The reply was “sedikit sahaja”. I assumed that the subtitles were brief.

There were subtitles for the first 15 minutes, although it was of poor quality and not readable against a white background.

Suddenly, the subtitles disappeared only to reappear just five minutes before the intermission.

The subtitles continued after the intermission but disappeared after five minutes, then reappeared just before the end.

I understand that all movies shown in local cinemas must have Bahasa Malaysia subtitles.

Although I could sort of follow the story line, I think the distributors missed out on a golden opportunity to attract non-Tamil speaking Malaysians to watch the movie.

Aside from the poor subtitles, I must say that I thoroughly enjoyed the movie with its good plot and acting and very innovative fights and dance sequences.

BOSS,
Kuala Lumpur. froma local non Indian viewer...

Sivaji the Boss and the numbers
By : Amir Muhammad

BY the time you read this, the Tamil film Sivaji would have grossed about RM7 million in Malaysia. It has been screening for three weeks.

I don’t know if this is the most successful Tamil release in this country, but it is certainly more successful than any Malaysian film. The record for a Malaysian film is held by Jangan Pandang Belakang, a fright-fest in which ghouls skate across the screen and flail about in the manner of R&B back-up dancers. It grossed RM6.4 million earlier in the year.

Now, these numbers are interesting. It’s one thing for a Hollywood film, amply endowed with international buzz, to inspire locals to choose it rather than the home-grown stuff. But a Tamil film?

True, the main actor, Rajinikanth, is famous and anticipation had been running high among Tamil movie fans. When some early Malaysian screenings suffered technical glitches, some frustrated punters even went on a rampage reminiscent of those "Say No to Violence" posters of our 1999 general election.

But still, a Tamil film? Less than 10 per cent of the population speaks Tamil, while almost all Malaysians speak Malay to some degree. So how can a Tamil film, whose run has not even ended, sell more tickets than any Malay film?

If you are an upper middle-class urban type who speaks mainly English (hands up, you shameless things!), it’s possible that Sivaji would have gone completely under your radar. After all, it’s not sponsored by any fast-food chain or telco. Then you might scratch your coiffured head that this film you’d never heard of will end up achieving around the same numbers as the first Lord of the Rings.

There are several possible reasons. Could it be that the non-Tamil speaking population has taken a sudden interest in subtitles? Or could it be that the small minority that consists of actual Tamil speakers like to watch this same film several times?

More pessimistically: Could it be that people who make Malay films, despite having had seven decades of practice, literally have no idea what our audience wants?

I suppose you can hire a market-research type to find out the reasons. But I like things to be a little mysterious. Life becomes more interesting that way. Besides, how often are market researchers right?

It’s great to live in a country where conventional wisdom can be turned on its head once in a while. For example, it’s assumed that people would rather see a film in a language that they understand. It’s also just assumed that Hindi films would have more appeal than Tamil ones, as the former have a glossier, plusher image, but the numbers have often shown otherwise.

And is Sivaji a bit grittier than, say, Kuch Kuch Hota Hai? Well, it’s about a US-based bloke who returns to India to set up a charity foundation. But there are corrupt officials and greedy businessmen in the way. He bribes his way through but then is confronted with a test of his principles. There’s also a love story somewhere. And songs by the venerable A.R. Rahman.

The success of Sivaji also makes one ponder the politics of numbers. It’s usually assumed that the majority will be stronger against the minority. This is true in the case of, say, an election. Leaving aside the touchy matter of how electoral boundaries are drawn, the basic premise is still: You need to get more votes than the other guy.

.......

The plot of Sivaji itself comments on the role of the minority (in this case, an individual who wants to make a change) pitted against a large, corrupt force of vested interests. The individual (presumably) wins. So you can say that the plot has an ontological relationship with its success.

The added irony here, of course, is that Sivaji is not such an underdog. At US$16 million (RM55.1 million), it is reportedly the most expensive Indian film ever. But that’s often the case, is it not? Almost all blockbusters are about the triumph of the little guy against a big force. In the first blockbuster, the force was a form of marine life with big teeth and a scary theme song.

But in subsequent incarnations, it has ranged from aliens to what Eisenhower called the "military-industrial complex".

These blockbusters are made by large corporations, which then touchingly need the contributions of millions of you little punters to keep them solvent. And we keep obliging because they make us feel good, these blockbusters do, and feeling good is not to be sniffed at.

After all this, I blush to admit that I have yet to see Sivaji. I was supposed to watch it at the Coliseum last Sunday but was then told that the queue was too long. I shall try again this weekend.

And I hope that this mania for Tamil movies will extend to the release today of Deepak Kumaran Menon’s Chalanggai (Dancing Bells), which was made entirely by Malaysians and shot mainly in Brickfields. I make a cameo appearance in it!

But even if I were not involved, I would recommend this sweetly-observed tale of youthful dreams coming up against tough choices. It is also a true lepak movie that makes you appreciate your surroundings. Go watch.

In TN too, most of the times, the theatres are releasing the lead actors movies. For eg. if you have taken the case of Subramaniapuram, it was not released in Inox or Sathyam (exactly I don't know but one of these two). After a week or two, Subramaniapuram was released there because of positive word of mouth everywhere. Within a week without any big actors, the movie was able to pull big crowds in Chennai (Movie plot was rural) which was really a surprise for me. The movie was able to garner big money when compared with its budget. Still, I think there are some exceptions in TN.

Tn la kooda In a C center like Arakonam it ran 5 weeks with decent crowd and many other places it did quite well.

The biggest problem it had is poor publicity where even many city people itself did not know abt the moie release for which the opening was not great across TN.. Due to WOM it did good business overall at the end of run.

It looks like it is boom time in Kollywood as a record 131 films were released in 2009. This is the highest number of films released in a year for nearly two decades.

Out of the 131 only 18 films got back their investment or were break even. Hit ratio has come down to 14 percent against 18 percent of 2008 and a peak of 24 percent in 2006.

Suriya’s Ayan the lone blockbuster is 2009’s biggest hit. The film was a universal hit in all areas and also topped audio sales. Superstar movies dominated the year with only Nadodigal emerging as a super hit among small and medium budget movies.

Here is the complete list of 18 films and their classification- Blockbuster, Super Hit, Hit, Above Average or Average. The list has been compiled from statistics provided by distributors, theatre owners and trade consultants.

The overall impact of a film across theatres in A, B, C stations in Tamil Nadu, domestic (Kerala, Karnataka and Telugu dubbing in some cases), Overseas, and revenues from Television, DVD, Audio rights. The hit factor has been determined by ROI (Return on Investment) for the trade.

Biggest disappointments of 2009

It was a year of big-budget disasters for Kollywood as a total of over Rs 150 crore sank at the box office.

There was this eagerly awaited Vijay’s Prabhu Deva directed Villu, Bala’s epic disaster Naan Kadavul, Vishals’s Thoranai, Gandhi Krishna’s Ananthathandavam, a movie you probably wished you hadn't seen, Vishnuvardhan’s Sarvvam which made you feel that the hugely talented director can also go wrong, Cheran’s Rs 10 Crore mothball Pokkisham, Jaganmohini which ended up as a tacky C grade special effects film, Sarath’s 1977, Vijaykanth’s great white hope Mariyadai and Ameer’s heavily hyped Yogi.

We now round up these culprits for this year-ender special.

Eeram is a hit.. I am coming to the other part of your words. Running for long time alone does not make a movie hit.. There are several movies oattapaduthal for the make of running it.. You know what type of movies are there. There are movies which they dont make it to run for long even with good crowds making way to Other movies. Eg.. UPO... There are movies which initially does not do well but due to word of mouth picks up late and runs for more days. Eg. Eeram.. For such cases if the budjet is big under all possibilities it might fall under Average.. Since Eeram was not that heavily budjetted it should definitely go Hit way..

BTW nee sify reports ellaam serious eduthittu paesa padaathu :lol2:

Eeram is a hit.. I am coming to the other part of your words. Running for long time alone does not make a movie hit.. There are several movies oattapaduthal for the make of running it.. You know what type of movies are there. There are movies which they dont make it to run for long even with good crowds making way to Other movies. Eg.. UPO... (The collection they made within the run it made itself is quite big comparing the investment)

There are movies which initially does not do well but due to word of mouth picks up late and runs for more days. Eg. Eeram.. For such cases if the budjet is big under all possibilities it might fall under Average.. Since Eeram was not that heavily budjetted it should definitely go Hit way..

i dunno wat else to say reg Adhavan and other sun pictures/cloudnine/redgiant movies made to run - u have to be in chennai to understand their "attagasam" :(

Aids vanthavangalukku thaan athoada effects theriyanumnu illa.. :) Silar therinjaalum theriyaatha maathiri kaatipaanaga.. that is different.. :lol2:aama eeram hittudhan kavalai padaatheenga

rifath nalla vaela sonna.. ivvalavu naeram eeram average nnu ninaichittu azhuthutae irunthaen :( ippa thaan nimmathi aachchu :D

2009: Hits and misses of Kollywood

2009 was the year of contradictions, yet another year of mixed responses at the box office. Let us take a look at the hits, misses, surprises and disasters in Kollywood in 2009.

Last year was a boom time in Kollywood with a record-breaking 131 films releasing during the year. This is the highest number of films released in any year for nearly two decades. But a boom in production apparetnly led to a fall in quality of content, with the hit ratio being just 14%.

Suriya's Ayan tops the chart of hits in 2009. This instant hit, which topped the audio sales also, is directed by noted cinematographer-turned-director K.V. Anand, who also penned the story and screenplay with Subha. Suriya dons the role of an educated and intelligent smuggler in this action thriller opposite Tamannaah with Prabhu as his guru.

Apart from Ayan, only a few movies made it into the hit list of 2009. Nadodigal, which gave good returns in terms of investment, was also critically appreciated. It was a film set in a small town in Southern Tamil Nadu (sureshot success formula?) by which the Sasikumar-Samuthirakani duo returned with a bang. Sasikumar's other directorial venture Passanga was also very well appreciated.

Dhanush starrer Padikathavan too made a mark in 2009. The much-hyped movie of the year Kanthaswamy, with Vikram and Shriya in the lead, was not up to audience expectations but managed to enter the hit list.

Bollywood's critically-acclaimed A Wednesday saw its Tamil version with Kamal Haasan and Mohanlal weaving magic on screen. Unnaipol Oruvan also tasted success both in the box office and among critics.

Eeram and Renigunta were also well-appreciated for their freshness and simplicity in the script. Other movies which gave good returns include Suriyas's Aadhavan, Jeyam Ravi's Peranmai, Bharath's Kanden Kadhalai, Madhavan's Yavarum Nalam and a few more.

Coming to the list of disasters, the biggest came in the form of the eagerly-awaited Vijay’s Prabhu Deva-directed Villu. Bala’s epic Naan Kadavul couldn't make it to the blockbusters' list, but was well-appreciated critically. Vishal’s Thoranai, Sarathkumar's 1977, Vijaykanth’s great white hope Mariyadai, a wonderful touching movie like Pokkisham and Ameer’s heavily hyped Yogi -- all disappointed at the box office.

Though the music of much-expected Vishnuvardhan’s Sarvvam was a huge hit, the film fetched bad reviews, which made everyone feel that hugely talented directors can also go wrong.

So that's how it is, a mixture of reactions! Excitement, disappointments, wins, losses -- everything is a part of this industry. Now it's a new dawn, a new beginning. Let's hope for the best in the current year as some of the best films are coming soon in Kollywood.
