from this link..

Sura - Rs. 71.5 lakhs

Paiyaa - Rs. 71 lakhs

Singam - Rs. 77.7 lakhs

Following the 20 lakh ceiling, there is a huge gap of 50 lakhs before the next band. The films above 70 lakhs; which can also be called the ‘first class’ openers of April and May.

On the list are three films, unsurprisingly, all of them carry great star power which propelled a strong start at the box office. Sura rode on Ilaya Thalapathi’s huge popularity, Tamannah’s rising stardom and the Sun Pictures factor to go over the 70 lakh mark. Paiyaa was testimony to Karthi’s undeniably growing star power and Tamannah’s popularity. Moreover, there was Yuvan’s super hit music, all of which combined in making Paiyaa a strong opener.

And, on top of them all is Suriya’s 25th film, Singam. Suriya proved that going full on commercial was not impossible for him. Hari’s racy screenplay and some peppy music by Devi Sri Prasad put the odds in Singam’s favor. And, as usual Sun Pictures were around to ensure that everyone heard the Singam roar.[/tscii:91f49b4281]

but Tamil films became a BO business much later - till then it was just like how it is in US and UK now - to satisfy the audience. I think Padayappaa was the first biggest hit and appeared in top 10. now Tamil films regularly feature in top 10.

I was looking at your malaysia box office web site ...

there is no news for singam on the week end of may 27 ... it starts from june 3 ... and it is said to have grossed $360,302 ... for a total gross of $1,131,444 .... means that on first week it grossed $771,142 ... near the entire Vaaranam aayiram  ...

raavanan is said to have grossed $453,134 on the first week ...

is your web site reliable ????

No guarantees Pras. Either you believe wholesale or reject all. Cant have it both ways. :P

Opening week for singam was really incredible. Tickets were unavailable the whole (3-day) weekend. Cinemas I checked like USJ Summit, Sunway Pyramid and CapSquare were running the film in more than one screen.

If Ravanan grossed $453,134 in first week, its entirely possible for Singam to have grossed $771,142.

In Tamil, the first half year belonged mainly to Suriya and his brother Karthi. While Suriya delivered a hit with Singam, which is still going strong, Karthi made his presence felt in a big way with Paiyya and earlier scored with Aayirathil Oruvan, Singam and Paiyya. Singam, directed by Hari, is a cop story with Suriya and Anushka in lead roles. Produced by Studio Green, it is running to full houses at many places and is expected to bring in at least Rs.40 crore. Paiyya, which had Karthi and Tamannaah in the lead, was a road movie directed by Linguswamy. Made at a budget of Rs 12 crore, the film has till date raked in more than Rs 30 crore. Vinnaithandi Varuvaya, the Gautham Menon-directed film with Silambarasan and Trisha in the lead, won rave reviews as well as box-office success. Made on a budget of Rs 14 crore, it has brought in Rs 18 crore. Karthi’s action flick Aayirathil Oruvan was lapped up by the audience due to its excellent visual effects and Karthi’s performance. The C.S.Amudhan-directed Tamizh Padam, which was a spoof on Tamil cinema, was made on a shoestring budget of Rs 2.5 crore and raked in as much as Rs 8 crore. Angadi Theru, directed by Vasanthabalan and produced by Ayngaran International, was a realistic film that went on to become an average grosser. So was the case with Simbu Devan’s Irumbu Kottai Murattu Singam. Mani Ratnam’s Raavanan, the most-awaited movie in recent times, is doing much better than its Hindi version and trade pundits expect it to be a hit.

DUBBED FILMS BOUNCE BACK
K-town stars Suriya and Karthi put the dubbing industry back on rails much to the relief of buyers and distributors. Hyderabad Times reports
BVS Prakash I TNN

After a brief lull, Tamil dubbed films are back in the reckoning with the latest Suriya flick Yamudu grossing more than Rs 13 crore (sold for 6 crore) and is still counting.
“My earlier dubbed films Veedokkade and Ghatikudu had potential but suffered due to poor promotion and bad selection of theatres,” Suriya had said. So, this time around, his cousin and producer Gnanavel aggressively promoted their cop story and chose the right theatres. “Our publicity blitz did work and also there were no big star films clashing with ours,” says producer Gnanavel who adopted a similar strategy for Karthi’s Yuganiki Okkadu and Awara and both the films garnered more than Rs 9 crores. “We left no stone unturned to make these two films commercial hits,” he adds.
That is how K-town stars expand their fan base in AP, whereas Telugu stars are reluctant to enhance their limited market, says a leading distributor. “Reigning Tamil stars shell out Rs 50 to 60 lakh to promote their films in Andhra Pradesh. Whereas, our Telugu stars are reluctant to spend even a penny to promote their films in Tamilnadu. Ap p a re n t ly Rajnikanth, Kamal Haasan, Vikram, Surya, Vishal and Karthi are pocketing anywhere between Rs 5 to 15 crore from the Telugu industry. Except for Allu Arjun who touched the Rs 1 crore mark in Kerala, other Ttown stars dubbed films are sold for just Rs 15 to 20 lakh. At least to justify their huge pay packets, our stars should push the envelope to attract pansouth Indian viewers,” he reasons.
For Vijayendar Reddy, exhibitor and president of Telangana Film Chamber of Commerce, commercial success is the key for survival. “Both exhibitors and distributors need theatre collections to be in the reckoning, be it a dubbed or straight film. A money-spinner leaves enough funds in the hands of distributors and exhibitors to invest it in other films,” he informs.
Invariably, trade circles are optimistic of Rajnikanth’s much-awaited magnum opus Robot (Ediran in Tamil), to be traded for the highest bid in the annals of Telugu dubbed history at around Rs18 to 20 crore. “I think 20 crore is on the higher side but buyers would weigh options before they invest since his earlier Kathanayakudu bombed at the BO and distributors lost around Rs 10 crore. Before that, buyers lost nearly Rs 4 crore by procuring Sivaji for 16 crore, as it failed to impress beyond the Nizam region. Buying Robot for fancy prices could be a risky proposition,” says Srinivas Reddy, exhibitor and distributor, Rayalaseema region.
If blockbusters like Chandramukhi, Aparichitudu, Pandem Kodi and Dasavatharam, ruled the roost, numerous duds like Mallanna, Ghatikudu, Salute, Nenu Devunni reversed the tide against dubbed films. “It may be any language movie but audience would patronise novel content. Exhibitors need films to run in their theatres since hundreds of small families thrive on them,’ says producer Chintalapudi Srinivas.
P D Prasad, GM, of a leading distribution house, gives a different perspective altogether. “Exhibitors are fascinated with dubbed Tamil and Hollywood films, so small-time filmmakers have to defer the release of their films, due to lack of good theatres. Straight Telugu films will get crushed, if we fail to curb the inflow of dubbed films. In Karnataka and Tamilnadu, they charge 100 per cent and 50 percent more entertainment tax respectively, whereas in AP the difference between Telugu and dubbed films is just 10% and is not a deterrent at all,” he rues. Notwithstanding, exhibitors and buyers are laughing all the way to the bank and trade circles are vibrant after a poor show of straight Telugu films in the last six months.[/tscii:1e5599bf9f]

Just for interest, let me post the figures of current films:

Madrasapattinam - $64,871

In comparison with low-key Tamil films, compare how Hindi films are making,

Once Upon a Time in Mumbaai - $5,799

Khwaam jam sun... Tae rak chan yao (Best of Times) - $1,127
Tere Bin Laden - $3,402

Really wondering why they bother screening Hindi films in Malaysia.

I don't know much about Unnai Ninaithu.. Let it be average... But, Nanda and other films were hit... They were touted as surprise hits which were unexpected... Ok, let us keep other films said by you as average.. Coming to Vel, the story wasn't well received by the multiplexes... But, at rural centers the collections were high... Vadivel's comedy, Surya's performance, Yuvan's songs plus the entire sentimental concept was very well received... Many sites gave first preference to Vel as the winner in Diwali 2007 race :P

I'm summarising the opening weekend collections of prominent films released in 2009 in Chennai city alone, from the stats got from Behindwoods.

Ex: Read as Kanthasamy gathered 93,02,759 INR in first 3 days from its release (i.e) Fri, Sat, Sun. Coloured movies have stats for more or less days as indicated by the side of the movie :P

2) Vettaikaran - 89,08,491

3) Padikkadhavan - 76,00,000 (First 5 days collection because site didn't have any stats for first 3 days collection)

4) Ayan - 67,81,107

5) Thoranai - 55,49,695

6) Naan Kadavul - 55,03,131

7) Aadhavan - 54,12,042 (First 2 days collection and the site had missed out the 3rd day)

8) UPO - 52,98,934

9) Arundhati - 44,01,036

10) Sarvam - 39,41,181

11) Pokkisham - 38,45,792

13) Maasilamani - 30,61,132

14) Kandaen Kadhalai - 24,32,932

15) Peraanmai - 20,48,285

~ There are other movies that didn't receive much grand opening but went on to become superhits like Nadodigal, Yaavarum Nalam... They have been omitted.

Hollywood Films Take a Rise in CBO

Wednesday August 11, 2010

In the past 10 months, it’s been the realms of Hollywood movies in Chennai Box office. Starting with Roland Emerich’s ‘2012’ followed by James Cameron’s ‘Avatar’, there has been continuous downpour of Hollywood releases.

It is worth mentioning that Christopher Nolan’s ‘Inception’ witnessed house-packed shows for three continuous weeks and is still rocking at box office. Angelina Jolie’s ‘Salt’ wasn’t an exception and ‘A-TEAM’ was yet another showpiece drawing repeated viewing.

‘The Twilight Saga – New Moon’ has been doing well amongst the elite audiences. For sure, this weekend is gonna be no more an exception as three Hollywood films are set to open at bigger levels.

The first one to hit headlines is Sylvester Stallone starrer ‘The Expendables’. The film is written and directed by Sylvester Stallone and is produced by Lion Gate Films. Touted to be an action-packed thriller adventure, the film brings together the most happening superstars Arnold Schwarzenegger, Bruce Willis, Jet Li, Steve Austin and so on.

Couple of comedy entertainers ‘Grown-Ups’ and ‘Dinners for Schmucks’ (this film is a remake of French Movie ‘Dinner Party Game’, which won global appreciations.
