A versatile actor, who had a penchant for performing outstanding but down to the earth and true to life characterizations, educated, corporate and suave gentleman GG had always proved his mettle and prowess that made him a household name till today even if he did not groom fanfare!!

Part 1 : The most challenged performance of the Hunchback of Notredame type role GG played with ease and aplomb in Kanavane Kan Kanda Deivam, to the surprise of all nook and corner of filmdom!!

ஆரம்ப காலத்தில், ஜெமினி ஸ்டுடியோவில் நிர்வாகப் பொறுப்பு பணியில் ஜெமினிகணேசன் இருந்த போது, அவருக்கு நடிப்பு மேல் தான் ஆசை இருந்தது. அதனால், ஜெமினி ஸ்டுடியோவை விட்டு விலகி, நாராயணன் கம்பெனியில், மாதம், 1,000 ரூபாய் சம்பளத்திற்கு நடிக்க அழைத்த போது, தயக்கத்துடன் ஒப்புக் கொண்டார். முதல் படம், தாய் உள்ளம். வில்லன் வேடம் தான் கிடைத்தது.

தொடர்ந்து, நாராயணன் கம்பெனியின் உரிமையாளர் நாராயணன் , கணவனே கண் கண்ட தெய்வம் என்ற படத் தயாரிப்பில் ஈடுபட்டார். அதில் கதைப்படி கதாநாயகனுக்கு, வீரம் நிறைந்த வாலிபன் மற்றும் கூன் விழுந்து, அருவருப்பான முகம் கொண்ட இரு வேறுபட்ட வேடம். அதை அழகான தோற்றம் கொண்ட ஜெமினி கணேசனால் செய்ய முடியுமா என்று சந்தேகப்பட்டார் தயாரிப்பாளர்.

இதை அறிந்த ஜெமினி கணேசன் ஒரு தந்திரம் செய்தார். அவரே ஒரு மேக்கப் மேனிடம் சென்று, கூன் விழுந்து அருவருப்பான பிச்சைக்காரன் போன்ற தோற்றத்தில், யாரும் கண்டுபிடிக்க முடியாத அளவுக்கு மேக்கப் போட்டுக் கொண்டார்.

அந்த தோற்றத்துடன், காலை நேரத்தில் தயாரிப்பாளர் வீட்டு வாசலில் நின்றார். ஏதோ பிச்சைக்காரன் என நினைத்து, அந்த வீட்டில் இருந்தவர்கள் கண்டு கொள்ளவில்லை. ஆனால், எதிர்பாராதவிதமாக திடீரென்று வீட்டிற்கு உள்ளேயே நுழைந்து விட்டார்.

அந்த சமயத்தில், கம்பெனி முதலாளி நாராயண ஐயங்கார், ஜெமினியை அடையாளம் தெரியாமல் பிச்சைக்காரர் என நினைத்து, திட்டி, வெளியே போகுமாறு விரட்டினார். நிலைமை விபரீதமாகும் முன், வேறு வழி இல்லாமல், "நான் தாங்க கணேசன்...' என்று வேடத்தை கலைத்து, சிரித்தபடி நின்ற ஜெமினியை பார்த்து, பிரமித்து போனார் தயாரிப்பாளர்.

"நீங்க என் மீது சந்தேகப்பட்டீர்கள் இல்லையா? கூன் வேடத்திற்கு நான் பொருத்தமானவன் என்று, நீங்கள் ஏற்றுக் கொள்ளத்தான், நான் அப்படி நடித்தேன்...' என்று சொன்ன போது, ஜெமினியை கட்டி அணைத்துக் கொண்டார். "கண்டிப்பாக நீதான் நடிக்கிறாய்...' என்று உறுதி அளித்தார். அஞ்சலி தேவியுடன், ஜோடி சேர்ந்து நடித்த, கணவனே கண்கண்ட தெய்வம் வெள்ளி விழா கொண்டாடி, சாதனை படைத்தது..............

GG had never been so 'good' at his dance steps in song sequences....some times he explicitely exhibits his nervousness when he happened to dance alongside dance queens like Vaijayanthi Maala or Padmini.....but who cared...when he was delivering the hammer blows of his acting skills in a smooth and suave corporate pattern inculcating dignity and perfections to the roles he essayed!!
However, very rarely GG too had astonished us with his energetic dance movements....in films like Kurathi Magan, karpukkarasi, Adhisaya thirudan, vaazhavaiththa theivam...but you can easily define a watershed for his dancing boundaries as in these films almost he performs only typified steps or movements....!!!!

THE ROMANTIC icon of Tamil Cinema is no more. Better known as `Kaadhal Mannan' and `Gemini Mama' to his intimate friends, one of whom was this writer, he has departed to the `Land of No Return.' One of the leading personalities of Indian Cinema, he left behind indelible footprints in the form of his romantic roles in Tamil movies and was respected beyond the borders of his native Tamil Nadu. When he was given the Filmfare `Life Achievement Award' some years ago, the entire gathering in the packed auditorium in Mumbai gave him a standing ovation proving his national fame even though he had not done many movies in languages other than Tamil.

Gemini Ganesh was a sophisticated person, a Madras University science graduate, and well informed on a variety of subjects. He could talk with ease and authority on even esoteric subjects like atomic energy and such. Abundantly articulate, he was a great raconteur with a bubbling sense of humour and wit. Above all, he was a highly disciplined movie star.

The last of the Big Three of Tamil Cinema of its Golden Era - the other two being M. G. Ramachandran and Sivaji Ganesan - the outstanding feature of Gemini's film career was that he did not hail like the other two from the `Boys' Company' background nor did he inherit the Tamil theatrical legacy. He was therefore happily free from the restrictive influence of the dictatorship of the proscenium arch. Such star and actor with a wide range of talents and skills was Gemini Ganesh. (All stars are not actors and all actors do not become stars!) He has shown his versatility doing a wide range of roles.... Serious melodrama... romance... comedy... tragedy... suave villainy... swashbuckler... historical figures... the love-sick man... He played them all with no trace of theatricality, exaggeration, and over-stressing.

As they say in Hollywood, he never chewed the carpet! As he has acted in hundreds of movies, one can only take note of his more memorable movies in which his performance was outstanding. The glittering list includes "Manampola Mangalyam" (1953, his debut as hero), "Kanavane Kan Kanda Deivam" (1955), "Missiamma" (1955), "Maathar Kula Manickam" (1956), "Kalyana Parisu" (1959), "Kalathur Kannamma" (1960, the debut of Kamal Hassan as a kid), "Thaen Nilavu" (1961), "Konjum Salangai" (1962), "Sumaithangi" (1962), "Karpagam" (1963), "Panamaa Paasamaa" (1968), "Iru Kodugal" (1969), "Poovaa Thalayaa" (1969), "Naan Avanillai" (1974, his own production, perhaps his best film in which he plays many roles)...

Ramaswami Ganesan was born on November 17, 1920, in a middle-class and prominent Saivaite Brahmin family of Pudhukottah (now Pudukottai). After his early education in his hometown, Ganesan came to Madras and joined the Madras Christian College in Tambaram. Here he took his B. Sc. Degree and for a while worked as demonstrator in his alma mater. Then his life took a different less travelled pathway that would soon fetch him name, fame and fortune. Ganesh joined Gemini Studios in mid-1940. With his stunningly handsome looks and inherent charm, it was not surprising that he had nursed in his bosom a desire for a career in movies. In addition, to encourage him he had close family links with the Gemini Studios' `Boss,' S. S. Vasan. Mrs. Vasan was closely related to him. Ramachandra Iyer, Vasan's father-in law was his grand-uncle.

While he entered the portals of the Studios easily, it was not that easy to face a movie camera in spite of family links and all! According to the sadly neglected genius of South Indian Cinema, K. Ramnoth who was then at Gemini Studios as Controller of Productions, a camera test of Ganesh was shot and he saw the spark in the handsome young man and was most impressed. However, others in the studio pecking order did not share his enthusiasm. By way of consolation he was appointed as the `Casting Assistant' and given a room and an office boy. During this innings Ganesh met and interviewed many screen aspirants of both sexes. Those included some of the later day big names of Indian Cinema, like S. V. Ranga Rao, J .P. Chandra Babu and most interestingly, a young woman from Andhra named K. Savithri.

His debut film

Meanwhile, Ramnoth's faith in Ganesan's talents remained in tact. And when he took up the production of "Miss Malini" (1947) for Gemini Studios he introduced his hopeful in the minor role as an assistant to the play-director in the movie. Outside the studio and his family and pals, nobody knew who he was and his name appeared in the credit titles as `R. G.' He had very few scenes and not much dialogue to speak. (The drama director was also a newcomer to cinema who would be making a mark not only as an actor but also screenwriter, soon to be known as `Javer' Seetharaman.) What a modest debut for a spectacular career for `R. G.'

In 1948 he appeared in another minor role as Lord Krishna in the successful Gemini Studio production, "Chakradhari." Though the film clicked at the box office in a big way Ganesan remained unknown to the public. Ramnoth, who had left Gemini Studios on August 15, 1947, worked for the well-known film unit of the day, Narayanan & Company. For it he directed "Thai Ullam" (1952), an adaptation of the popular sentimental tearjerker novel `East Lynne' by the noted writer Mrs. Henry Wood.

Interestingly the hero of this film was R. S. Manohar who later created history as theatre person and also star-screen villain of Tamil Cinema.

Ramnoth wished to cast that brilliant actor and star, T. S. Balaiah as the villain but his `asking price' was more than half of the budget of the film. Enter Ganesan as villain. For this role, Ganesan, credited in the titles as `R. Ganesh,' received a very modest four-figure fee. However, that did not matter because for the first time moviegoers took notice of the handsome man who began to cause flutters in many a female heart of all ages. In the same year he played a supporting role as one of the three sons in the Gemini Studios production, "Moondru Pillaigal." Sadly this film flopped.

The year 1953... a milestone in Ganesan's life and movie career. The future superstar, then 33 (not so young according to old Indian standards) hit the bull's eye when he was cast in a dual role as the `heroes' in the Narayanan unit production "Manampola Mangalyam."

A comedy of mistaken identity of two look-alikes, one of whom is an inmate of a lunatic asylum who escapes, the interesting story line was created by the leading and innovative Telugu screenwriter Vempati Sadhasivabramham. The Tamil film script was written by Tamil writer, Umachandran, and filmmaker K. V. Srinivasan and all three received credits in the film for the story and screenplay.

"Manampola Mangalyam" had two heroines, buxom Telugu actress Surabhi Balasaraswathi and the other was a talented and attractive actress, destined to make history in South Indian cinema, Savithri.

Ganesan and Savithri not only played the reel-lovers, but also fell in love in real life too and soon got married. Ganesan had already married young, was father of two children and not surprisingly, the second matrimonial venture was hot news.

The film was a thumping success, the hero became a star, and he never looked back. A new age in Tamil Cinema, that of the Romantic Hero had dawned.

He was a hero who did not indulge in fisticuffs every fifth scene, or did not take off into jaw-breaking long-winded alliterative and seemingly endless passages of Tamil dialogue.

With the success of his films like "Kanavane Kan Kanda Deivam" (1955), "Missiamma" (1955), "Pennin Perumai" (1956), "Maathar Kula Manickam" (1956), "Vanji Kottai Vaaliban" (1958) and many others he acquired an outstanding reputation as the Romantic Hero and soon a befitting prefix "Kaadhal Mannan" (King of Love) was bestowed on him!

A study of his worthy and better films reveals an interesting facet of the hero being drawn to two women and caught in the eternal love triangle.

His own complicated personal real life perhaps enriched and invested his reel life romantic roles with rare emotional depth, empathy and such sensitive values which other top heroes of that period could not do without theatrical exaggeration, over-playing, and as they say, `emoting in every frame!'

His best performance perhaps was in his own production "Naan Avan Illai" in which he played many roles as seducer of naive women. Directed by K. Balachandar, this film won high critical praise for his brilliant performance but according to the star-producer it did not bring home the bacon.

With his handsome looks and charisma, it is not surprising that he was the cynosure of female eyes.

As an American film historian wrote about the Hollywood icon Gary Cooper, "they came to him with their platefuls of delicacies which he partook." In all fairness to him, Gemini Ganesh was "more sinned against than sinning." (An expression, which he loved, heard from this writer every time they met!)

Keenly interested in sports, he played cricket, billiards and snooker. In his younger days, he played cricket in the Madras City league level with some measure of success.

This suave star and talented actor and above all a perfect gentlemen with old-world culture, values and polish, may be gone but his movies shall be an eternal reminder of the man called Gemini Ganesh.

A strong bond

GEMINI GANESH played the dad of the three-year old toddler Kamal Hassan in the latter's debut film "Kalathur Kannamma." Much later the two repeated the roles in K. Balachander's "Unnaal Mudiyum Thambi."

The affinity that they had for each other came across very clearly on screen, even in "Avvai Shanmughi" when Ganesh's roving eye for the `maid' portrayed by Kamal provided some hilarious moments. Effectively that was Ganesh's last major role, though he made a five-minute appearance later in "Adithadi."

"I thought that like his mom he would live to cross 90," sighs Kamal. Busy as he was with "Mumbai Express," Kamal hadn't been able to meet Gemini Ganesh recently and he regrets it.

"But I've been in touch with Kamalamma (Kamala Selvaraj), his daughter. We are more like a family and we've been maintaining contact throughout ... " Kamal Hassan's relationship with the veteran actor has been on a different plane and from his tone you could make out that the screen dad will always hold a special place in his thoughts.

Gemini Ganesan.....the inevitable screen personality in Tamil Movie history....the debonair actor who could bring in a sort of decency and diligence to the love and family based screen plays.....he could enthrall the audience with his suave and corporate looks earning the respect by virtue of his educational background and easy mingling with his colleagues and associates in filmdom...He had a strong opinion that movies should be enjoyed as a part of entertainment to our minds and none should succumb to the craze on film actors....that's why he even kept himself away from fanfare though he was also construed as one of the trinity of Tamil Movie arena!!

The most distinguishing success element that kept GG on his stardom's throne as the King of Love was the fantastic synchronization of his play back voices from AMRaja and PBSreenivas in his earlier and medieval days and SPB or Jesudas in his later days and occasionally TMS too for some situational songs but with lot of voice modulations!!

In fact, GG's career's backbones were PBS and AMR as the melodious songs by them for GG still rule the roost in TV slots!! It is amazing to observe that some the pronunciations perfectly bring out the traits of GG himself!!

நான் அவனில்லை- 1974.

தமிழ் படங்கள் 1973 முதல் கேவலமான நெருக்கடியை எதிர்கொண்டன. ஸ்ரீதர் ,கே.எஸ்.ஜி ,பீம்சிங் போன்றோர் தேய்ந்து மறைந்து கொண்டிருந்த நேரம். ஹிந்தியில் பாபி,யாதோன் கி பாரத் ,அபிமான் ,ஷோலே,சோடி சி பாத் என்று தூள் கிளப்ப , ஆர்.டீ.பர்மன்,லட்சுமி-பியாரி, சலில் போன்றோர் இசையில் பட்டையை கிளப்ப ,தமிழில் மூன்றாந்தர இயக்குனர்கள், தன் பழைய பெருமைகளில் தோய்ந்து தமிழ் படங்களை தேய்த்து தரை மட்டமாக்கி கொண்டிருந்த ஹீரோக்கள்,பெருங்காய டப்பா மட்டுமே மிஞ்சிய இசையமைப்பாளர்கள் என்று இளையராஜா,பாரதிராஜா,மகேந்திரன் ,பாலுமகேந்திரா வருகை தந்த 1977 வரை களப்பிரர் ஆட்சி போல இருண்ட காலத்தில் அவதியுற்ற தமிழ் பட ரசிகர்களின் ,ஒரே நம்பிக்கையாக புதுமையான ,தரமான படங்களை தந்து கொண்டிருந்தவர் கே.பாலசந்தர்.

1973 அரங்கேற்றம் முதல் ,தன் பாணியையே மாற்றி புது அலைக்கு தக்க தன் அலைவரிசையை tune பண்ணி மெருகேற்றி ,தரமற்ற தமிழ் பட talkie களுடன், கற்பனை வளமற்ற சாரமற்ற திரைகதை,நேரிடை cliched வசனங்கள், அதை விட கற்பனை வளமில்லா நேரிடை cliche நடிப்பு, ஆகியவற்றுடன் கே.பீ. one man army ஆக போராடி கொண்டிருந்தார். அரங்கேற்றம், சொல்லத்தான் நினைக்கிறேன், பின்னால் வெளியான அவள் ஒரு தொடர்கதை,அபூர்வ ராகங்கள்,மன்மத லீலை என்று, கற்காலத்திற்கு பின் தங்கி இயங்கி ,உலகத்தை விடுங்கள்,இந்திய நீரோட்டத்துடன் கூட இணைய மறுத்த தமிழ் படங்களின் ஒரே காவலனாக போராடி கொண்டிருந்த காலம்.

நாயகர்களை முன்னிறுத்தி ,வெறியர்களுக்கு தீனி போடாமல்,கதைகளத்தை முன்னிறுத்தி,காலத்தோடு மாற விரும்பிய இயக்குனர்களின் ஒரே நம்பிக்கை பழைய தலைமுறையாயினும் ,ஜெமினி ஒருவரே .


அதுவரை ஜெமினி soft sophisticated romance ,intelligent situational காமெடி ,விரக்தி மற்றும் தாழுணர்வு கொண்ட கதாபாத்திரங்கள், நல்மனம் கொண்ட கிராமத்து மனிதர் பாத்திரங்களிலேயே சோபித்தார்.முதல் முறையாக ,ஜெமினியின் நிஜ இயல்புக்கு ஒத்த ,நிஜ கதையை தழுவிய வங்காள நாடக inspiration இல் பாலசந்தர் தந்த காலத்தை மீறிய அதிசயம் நான் அவனில்லை.

இந்த படத்தை திருச்சி பாலஸ் திரையரங்கில் கே.பாலச்சதரின் அக்காள் மகன் என் நண்பர் பீ.அசோக் குமார் உடன் பார்த்த அனுபவம்.(கே.பீ யின் மகள் புஷ்பாவும்,மகன் கைலாசமும் எனது கல்லூரியில் உடன் படித்த (ஒன்றிரண்டு வருட வித்யாசம்)நண்பர்களே)

இனி நான் அவனில்லை படத்தை பற்றி பார்ப்போம்.

நான் அவனில்லை கதை களம், சம்மந்த பட்டவர்களின் பங்களிப்பு இவற்றை ஆராயு முன்----

தமிழிலேயே எனக்கு மிக மிக பிடித்த படங்களில் ஒன்றாக நான் கருதுவது நான் அவனில்லை.

ஜெமினிக்கு ,இந்த படத்துக்காக தேசிய விருது கிடைக்காதது நமக்கெல்லாம் பெருத்த அவமானம்.என்ன ஒரு performance ? சும்மா புகுந்து விளையாடி பெடலெடுத்திருப்பார். அவரின் 9 சொச்ச வேடங்களும் தனித்தனியாக நில்லாமல் கதையுடன் பிணைந்து பயணிக்கும். காதல் மன்னனுடன் ,காதல் இளவரசனும் (அன்றைய வளரும் நடிகர்)ஒரு சிறு சுவையான வேடத்தில் மலையாளம் பறைவார்.

பாலச்சந்தரின் மருமகன் குறிப்பிட்டதில் இருந்து நான் அறிந்தது, ஜெமினிக்கும் (சொந்த படம்),கே.பிக்கும் பிணக்கு ஏற்பட்டு ,இடைவேளைக்கு பின்பு கே.பீ நினைத்த மாதிரி அமையாமல் கே.பீக்கு முழு திருப்தி இல்லையாம். ஆனால் புத்திசாலி ரசிகர்களுக்கு ,இது என்றுமே முழு திருப்தி தந்த படமே.

ஒரு சாதாரண கோர்ட் ரூம் டிராமா , எப்படி சுவையான பாத்திரங்களால்,nerrative surprise நிறைந்த திரைக்கதையால்,கூர்மையான இயல்பான வசனங்களால் ,ஒரு வித்தியாச சிந்தனை கொண்ட இயக்குனரால் பரிமளித்தது என்று பார்ப்போம்.வந்த போது பெரிய வெற்றி படமல்ல.புத்தியுள்ள மனிதரெல்லாம் வெற்றி காணாத காலம்.

இந்த படத்தில் விறுவிறுப்பு,திருப்பங்கள்,நகைச்சுவை(டயலாக்,si tuati on-linked) ,அங்கங்கே மிளீரிடும் மனிதம்,கட்டி போடும் வசனம்(ஒரு நிமிடம் நாம் கவனத்தை நகர்த்தினால் முக்கியமான லிங்க் போய் விடும்)என்று ,அருமையான ஒரு படைப்பு. இந்த அளவு wholesome என்று சொல்லத்தக்க படங்கள் இந்திய அளவில் மிக குறைவே.

நான் எஸ்.எஸ்.எல்.சி முடித்த கையோடு, பீ.யு.சீயில் படிக்கும் போது இந்த படம் பார்த்த போது தீவிர கே.பீ.ரசிகன். ஜெமினியை பிடிக்கும்.(தீவிர ரசிகன் என்று சொல்ல முடியாவிட்டாலும்)

அடுத்தடுத்த நாட்களில் ஐந்து முறை பார்த்து என் பெரியப்பா ,அப்பாவிற்கு போஸ்ட் கார்டு எழுதி உன் பையனுக்கு எதிர்காலமே இல்லை என்று தெரிவிக்கும் அளவு தீவிரமாகி, இந்த படம் என்னை பாதித்தது.

இன்று பார்க்கும் போதும் அதே உணர்வையே அடைகிறேன். இதை பற்றி விலாவரியாக எழுதும் துடிப்பை என் கைகள்,இதயம்,அறிவு மூன்றும் பரபரக்கிறது.

கதையை நேரிடையாக சொல்லி, மற்ற அலசல்களை தொடர்கிறேன்.(பார்த்தவர்களுக்கு தேவை படாது)

போலிஸ் ஒரு நடுத்தர வயது ஆங்கிலோ இந்தியன் ஒருவனை துரத்துவதில் ஆரம்பிக்கும் டைட்டில் , ஒரு கிராமத்து மனிதன் விபத்தில் மாட்டி சந்தேகத்தில் பிடி படுவதில் படம் துவங்கும். பின் நேரடியாக கோர்ட் ரூம்தான்.சாட்சிகள் ஒவ்வொருவராக வர, குற்றம் சாட்டப்பட்ட வடசேரியில் நெய்சு வேலை செய்து வருவதாக சொல்லும் நாஞ்சில் நம்பி ,தன்னுடைய டிபென்ஸ் வக்கீலை இன்சல்ட் செய்து துரத்தி தனக்காக தானே வாதாடி கொள்வதாக சொல்கிறான்.முதல் சாட்சியாய் சவப்பெட்டி தொழில் செய்யும் ஆல்பர்ட் ஆசீர்வாதம் எதிரில் நிற்பது தன்னுடைய B .A படித்த புத்தி கூர்மை ,பன்மொழி திறமை கொண்ட தன்னுடைய தம்பி டேவிட் ஆசிர்வாதமே, மனைவி(ஊமை),இரு குழந்தைகளை தவிக்க விட்டு 15 வருடம் முன்பு ஓடி விட்டவனே என்று சொல்கிறான். நாஞ்சில் நம்பியோ,நான் அவனில்லை என்று நிறுவ பார்க்கிறான்.

அடுத்த சாட்சி மாதவ ராவ் என்ற அரசாங்க ஊழியன் ,சி.என்.எ .சாரி என்ற பெயரில் தனக்கு நல்ல வேலை வாங்கி தருவதாக சொல்லி 15000 ரூபாய் ஏமாற்றியது குற்றம் சாட்ட பட்டு கூண்டில் நிற்பவரே என்று சொல்கிறான்.

இடையில் இந்த வழக்கின் நீதிபதி ஜலால் ஹுசேன் மகள் சலீமா ஹுசேன் ,இந்த வழக்கில் தனக்கு ஒரு உண்மை தெரியும் என்று சொல்கிறாள்.அக்பர் அலி என்ற பெயரில் ரயிலில் வரும் தன்னுடன் அழகான உருது பேசி ,தன் அப்பாவிடம் 1000 ரூபாய் தந்தி மணி ஆர்டர் சலீமா என்ற பெயரை உபயோகித்து ஏமாற்றியவன் அவனே என்றுணர்ந்து ஒரு ஹீரோ வொர்ஷிப் கொண்டு,கோர்ட்டுக்கு வர ஆரம்பிக்கிறாள்.

அடுத்தடுத்து விஜயஸ்ரீ என்கிற தெலுங்கு பெண்,தன்னிடம் லட்சுமண சர்மா என்ற பெயரில் தன்னை மணந்து (இதில் சித்தப்பா சகாதேவ சாஸ்திரிகள் என்று வேறு )பணம்,நகைகளை ஏமாற்றியவன் என்றும்,அம்மு குட்டி என்ற கேரளா பெண் ,சத்ருகன மேனன் என்ற பெயரில் தன்னை மணந்து ,75000 ரூபாய் பணம்,30000 ரூபாய் நகைகளுடன் ஓடியவன் என்று அடுத்தடுத்து சாட்சி சொல்ல ,குற்றவாளியின் பதில் நான் அவனில்லை.இந்த பெண்கள் சொல்லும் ஒரு பெயர் ஜானி வாக்கர் என்ற நண்பன் அடிக்கடி கொடுக்கும் வாழ்த்து தந்திகள்,இறப்பு செய்திகள்.தேன் மொழி என்ற கல்யாண புரோக்கர். என்று சாட்சிகள்.

நாஞ்சில் நம்பி ஆங்கிலம்,தெலுங்கு,மலையாளம்,உருது என அனைத்து மொழிகளும் பேசுவதால்,அவன் தாய் மொழி அறிய ,எதிர்பாராமல் போலிஸ் கன்னத்தில் அறைய முஷே என்று கத்துகிறான்.அனைவரும் குடைந்து முஷே என்பது சீன மொழியில் அம்மாவை குறிப்பது என்று அங்கலாய்கிறார்கள்

.அடுத்து கிருஷ்ணா பாய் ,தங்கள் ஆஸ்ரமத்திற்கு வந்து ,தன்னுடைய பெண் ராணியை சர்வாலங்கார பூஷிதையாய் பழனிக்கு அழைத்து சென்று ஏமாற்றிய ஹரி ஹர தாஸ் ஸ்வாமிகள் ,நாஞ்சில் நம்பியை நிற்பவனே என்று சாட்சி கூற,அடுத்து violet solomon என்ற ஆங்கிலோ இந்திய பணக்கார மாது, தன் கணவன் ஜாக் சாலமன் அவனே என்றும் ,தான் அவனை இன்னும் விரும்புவதை கூற,நாஞ்சில் நம்பியில் விழி கடையோரத்தில் துளிர்க்கும் நீர்.அவளை குறுக்கு விசாரணையும் செய்யாமல் அனுப்புகிறான்.(மற்றவர்களை போட்டு கிழி கிழிதான்)அடுத்த சாட்சி ராணி.தன்னை ஏமாற்றி தன் நகைகளை எடுத்து கொண்டு ஓடிய ஹரிஹரதாஸ் ஸ்வாமிகள் அவனே என்றும்,தன்னை பலர் கற்பழித்து,ஒரு நடன விடுதியில் நடன மாதாக இருக்கும் பொது,ஒரு இளைஞன் வாழ்வு கொடுத்ததாக கூறுகிறாள்.(அம்மு குட்டியின் தம்பியே).

தன் சாட்சியாக நாஞ்சில் விசாரிப்பது தானம்மாள் என்கிற தன் மனைவியை மட்டுமே.(3 ஆண் 2 பெண் குழந்தை 10 வருட வாழ்க்கை)

அடுத்து ஜானி வாக்கர் என்ற பெயரில் தந்தி கொடுத்த தம்பிதுரை மாட்ட, ஜாக் சாலமனாய் கொடைக்கானலில் உலவிய டேவிட் என்கிற,நாஞ்சில் நம்பி என்கிற,சாரி என்கிற,அக்பர் அலி என்கிற,சத்ருகன மேனன் என்கிற,லட்சுமன் சர்மா என்கிற,ஹரிஹரதாஸ் ஸ்வாமிகள் என்கிற நான் அவனில்லை ,அம்முகுட்டியின் தம்பி,விஜயஸ்ரீ,அம்முகுட்டி,வயலெட் எல்லோரிடமும் ஒரு சேர மாட்ட தப்பித்து ஓடும் போது……

இறுதியில் 14 வருடம் கடுங்காவல் பெறும் அவனிடம் அண்ணன் ஆல்பர்ட் ,இப்போதாவது ஜீசஸ் இடம் பாவமன்னிப்பு கோர சொல்ல திமிராக சாதிக்கும் அவனிடம் கோபம் கொண்டு கத்தியால் குத்தி விட கடைசியில் ,ஜீசஸ் என்று தன்னை வெளிக்காட்டி மரணமடையும் டேவிட் என்கிற perverted genius deviant .genius .

The High light of Naan Avanillai lies in its Novel Theme, Structuring of the movie soaked well in Layered Nuances, Well rounded Multi Dimensional Characters, its narrative surprises,Intelligent Pauses, and the space given to all minor characters.Infact protagonist cum Antagonist of the movie is built on minor blocks of different Hues&shades.

Unfortunately ,Tamil audiences used to bonding with the character who is our Emotional Proxy or substituting our wishes on the characters and the characters are usually the collection of traits necessary for the nerrative and their decision,choices ,Traits cause something which shapes the flow or outcome of nerrative soaked in exaggerated melodrama.

Nan Avanillai broke this jinx and not far from reality as it is based on a true story of a deviant individual .It can even be classified under Classic Film Noir which is strange,Erotic and Ambivalent with Black Humour.The deconstruction of the nerrative with elusive phenomena lies in its non-chronological progression but coherent in logic and aesthetic consistency.

The central dynamic of the story uses coincidences to worsen the characters' plight. The inherent Form&contents offer Anticipation and surprises and Finger pointing devices are implanted intelligently in the Film.The pacing out of the dramatic elements with confrontation and squaring off between characters of conflicting interests with intelligent sub-plots and Minor characters etched properly with different spaces.The Film slowly gain in knowledge search,investigate with time indication intensify the expectation with unique tone,Style and Atmosphere.

The screen play has plenty to offer in reversals,surprises and revelations,A problem to solve,New Experiences,Clearly defining the premise, starting with a situation ,Win attention by involving the Audience thru minor characters (Saleemaa,Spectator achacho chitra). But Audience are primarily engrossed and enthralled by the main character .The cognitive process happens thru constant testing and revising previous conclusions.

One anticipates,curious&Surprised,feels cheated at times , amazed with the deviant theme from normal life.Proper emphasis given at times with strong painful emotions,empathy with underdogs enhances audience kinesthetic response.

The story gains momentum with new and constant sensation with scene constructions thru odds and obstacles enhanced with dramatic tension, the process of problem,obstacle,choice,pressure ,tension,challenge,imbalance,conflicting values,clash,disharmony,discord with dramatic progression in crises,tension. The sequence of events one leads to another escalate in intensity and plant many questions with appropriate anger at social issues.

It arranges cues with something introduced new always ,withholding something,to intrigue and tantalise the audience.

நான் அவனில்லையில் ஜெமினியின் நடிப்பு விசேஷமாய் அலச பட வேண்டியது. வெளி பார்வைக்கு நகைச்சுவையாய் தோன்றும் ஆழ்ந்த கதையமைப்பில் அவர் பங்கு மிக மிக delicate ஆனது. exemplarily executed &Near perfect .

பல வேடங்கள் புனையும் ஜெமினியின்,படம் முழுக்க பிரதான இணைப்பாக வரும் வேடம் நெய்சு வேலை செய்யும் நாஞ்சில் நம்பி.இந்த வேடத்திலேயே பிடி படுவதாலும்,கோர்ட் விசாரணை முழுக்க இந்த பாத்திரமே கையாளுவதாலும் ,இதுவே முக்கிய பாத்திரமாகும்.

இது கொஞ்சம் சிக்கலான பாத்திரம்.

நகைச்சுவையும் காட்ட வேண்டும்,seriousness இழக்க படகூடாது. நாஞ்சில் slang பேசும் பாமரனாக காட்ட வேண்டும்.தன் வழக்கில் தானே வக்கீலாகவும் வாதாட வேண்டும்.சாட்சிகளை, குறுக்கு விசாரணை செய்யவும் வேண்டும்,அதே நேரம் மித மிஞ்சிய புத்திசாலித்தனம் வெளியாகவும் கூடாது.சாட்சிகளின் பலவீனத்தை வைத்து மடக்க வேண்டும்.அதே நேரம் தெரிந்ததாக காட்டி கொள்ள கூடாது. குற்ற சாட்டுகளால் பாதிக்க பட வேண்டும்.அதே சமயம் அந்த குற்றங்கள் தன்னை சேராதவை என்று குறிப்புணர்த்த வேண்டும்.இந்த கத்தி மேல் நடக்கும் பாத்திரத்தில் ஜெமினி தவிர வேறொரு நடிகனை கற்பனை கூட செய்ய முடியாது.(என் நெஞ்சில் நிறைந்த இதய தெய்வத்தையும் சேர்த்தே).வெகுளி தனத்தில்,அவ்வப்போது எட்டி பார்க்கும் குரூர புத்திசாலித்தனத்தை அவர் உணர்த்தும் பாங்கு.ஆனாலும் என்னதான் perverted crook என்றாலும் violet unconditional love காட்டும் போது(பாவம் ,இவளுடன் செட்டில் ஆகவே விழைவார்),கண்களின் ஓரத்தின் துளிர்க்கும் துளியே துளி நீர்,அவளை குறுக்கு விசாரணை செய்யாமல் காட்டும் மெல்லிய பரிவு. காதல் மன்னன் ஜால வித்தை காட்டுவார்.

சாரியாக ஒரு வினோத நடை,(சவடால் வைத்தியை ஒத்த பாத்திரம்),வித்தியாச பேச்சு,அக்பர் அலியாக உருதுவில் கிளப்புவது,முக்கியமாக ஸ்டேஷன் மாஸ்டர் இடம் சலீமா தான்தான் என்று விளக்கும் அடாவடி. சித்தப்பா சகாதேவ சாஸ்திரி யாக (வினோத பொடி டப்பா)பேராசை கொண்ட வேத வித்துவாக,லக்ஷ்மண சர்மா,சத்ருகன மேனன் என்று கன்னட ,மலையாள slang பேசி மாட்டி கொள்ளும் கட்டத்தில் மாறி மாறி சமாளிப்பு, ஹரிஹர தாஸ் சுவாமிகளாக அண்ணாவுடன்,நேருவுடன்,மகாத்மாவுடன் கற்பனை உரையாடல்,கைவீக்கம்,கால்வீக்கத்திற்கேல்லாம் முற்பிறவி ரீல் ,ஜாக் சாலமன் என்ற தும்மல் பார்டி ஆங்கிலோ இந்தியராக படத்தையே இமாலய உயரத்திற்கு தூக்கி விடுவார்.ஒரு black humour ,situational humour இழையோடும் காட்சிகளில் எந்த முக சேட்டையும் இல்லாது நம்மை நகைச்சுவை புன்னகை பூக்க வைப்பார்.

நான் அவனில்லை ஒரு மனோரஞ்சித மலர். முழு யானையை பார்க்க வழியில்லாத குருடர்களான தமிழர்கள், அதன் ஏதாவது ஒரு பாகத்தை தொட்டு உணர்ந்திருந்தாலே போதும்.இந்த படம் மிக உயரங்களை அடைந்திருக்கும்.

இந்த படத்தை ஒரு ஜாலியான பொழுது போக்கு படமாக பார்க்கலாம். ஈர்ப்பான காட்சிகள்,நிறைய heroine கள். சிறப்பான பாடல்கள்.

மிக சுவையான நகைச்சுவை படமாக பார்க்கலாம்.

சமுதாய கருத்துக்கள் விரும்புவோர்க்கும் நிறைய.(இந்த மாதிரி ஜென்மங்கள் இன்றும் உண்டு.)படத்தில் தீனி உண்டு.

புதுமை விரும்பிகளுக்கு buffet டின்னெர்.

ஆனால் ஒன்று. ஒரு நொடி கூட கண்ணையோ,காதையோ,மூளையையோ மூடி casual ஆக பார்க்க முடியாமல்,நம் நேரத்தை இந்த படம் மட்டுமே தக்க வைத்து விடும்.

அதையெல்லாம் மீறிய பாலச்சந்தரின் லாஜிக் மீறாத தற்செயல் சம்பவங்களின் சுவையான இணைப்பு கோர்ப்பு,ஒரு சம்பவம் இன்னொன்றுக்கு துணையாகி வேறொரு அபத்தத்தில் முடியும் சுவையான linked situations ,ஒவ்வொரு சம்பவத்துக்கும் சுவையான leads என்று இக்கால திரை கதை,வசனகர்த்தாக்கள்,இயக்குனர்கள் படிக்க வேண்டிய பாடம்.

இன்றைய டொராண்டினோ,நோலன் போன்று பரிமளித்திருக்க கூடிய உலக இயக்குனர் தமிழில் பிறந்து தொலைத்தது....(நடிகர்திலகத்துக்கு நேர்ந்த அதே விபத்து.தமிழனாய் பிறந்து தொலைத்த தமிழின் இரு பால்கேக்கள்)

இந்த படத்தின் சுவையான காட்சிகளை விஸ்தாரமாக விவரிக்க ஆசையிருந்தாலும்,இது கண்டு,கேட்டு,களித்து,சுவைக்க வேண்டிய, நான் மிக மிக strong ஆக prescribe செய்யும் ஒரு படம்.

எனக்கு பிடித்த பாலுவின் மற்றொரு பாணி.சினிமாடிக் லைசென்ஸ் உபயோகித்து அவர் கொடுக்கும் எதிர்பாரா அதிர்ச்சிகள்.புன்னகையில் கற்பழிப்பு காட்சிக்கு பாடல் உபயோகிப்பு.இதில் பக்தர்கள் அனைவரும் ராணியை பண்ணும் மாஸ் rape .

மற்றபடி அனந்து,சர்மா,கிட்டு,லோகநாதன்,என்று இயக்குனர் சிகரத்தின் வழக்க கூட்டணி.

நாயகர்களை முன்னிறுத்தி ,வெறியர்களுக்கு தீனி போடாமல்,கதைகளத்தை முன்னிறுத்தி,காலத்தோடு மாற விரும்பிய இயக்குனர்களின் ஒரே நம்பிக்கை பழைய தலைமுறையாயினும் ,ஜெமினி ஒருவரே .


நான் அவனில்லை ஒரு மனோரஞ்சித மலர். முழு யானையை பார்க்க வழியில்லாத குருடர்களான தமிழர்கள், அதன் ஏதாவது ஒரு பாகத்தை தொட்டு உணர்ந்திருந்தாலே போதும்.இந்த படம் மிக உயரங்களை அடைந்திருக்கும்.

Passing Clouds and Mushrooms in GG's on-screen traverse!

Though GG was quality conscious in delivering his acting dimensions sometimes it was so unavoidable for him to accept some movies for sustaining his market stand and from the point of view of commercial profits when a producer depends on him!!

Insignificant and unnoticed category of GG movies!!

Yaanai Valarththa Vanambaadiyin Magan and Porchilai!! Just passing cloud or a mushroom emrging after rains! Both are short lived and do not linger in memory!


For ardent fans of GG these two movies were highly disappointing trivia in which GG should not have acted!!
Shattering his cult image of the King of Romance these movies offered little scope for GG to parade his unique talents exemplified in movies like sumaithaangi, Ramu, Iru Kodukal,Naan Avanillai and Kalyana Parisu!!
