Score it right
Oscar winner AR Rahman has finally said yes to Hollywood! The music maestro has signed a Hollywood romantic comedy called Couples Retreat. The film requires Rahman to do his first full-fledged western score. “It doesn’t have any oriental or Indian touches. So no Jai Ho this time for global listeners who are looking for a similar musical experience. Everywhere I go, I’m greeted by those two words! But now I want to move on. This will be a completely American score, done in my way.”

It would be very interesting to see if A.R.Rahman can give Hollywood his touch. You know in USA they don't care much of the music. For example in a romantic comedy like this there has never been a high class music composer approached. It's not the same like in Indian love stories where you have the best scope to compose good music. In english comedies the music plays just a side role. So I am bit surprised to see ARR composing music for this movie. And if he can now revolutianize Hollywood with adding good music even for such movies, A.R.Rahman will rule the music world.

Yeah that's what has been bothering me too, the scope for music in a rom-com. I guess ARR wants to try his hand at all genres.
Plus, I don't think soundtracks get released for comedy films.

Why not? I believe, there are soundtracks of comedy films. But it would differ from the "Indian format" then, not as usual 5-7 songs. Anyhow, we'll see. Really glad to see, that he got opportunity to work on completely different genre, SDM film itself was very Indian, but this will be pure Western.
And,
Isn't it Couples Retreat?
yes, it is Couples Retreat ! (Couples: noun, plural; Retreat:verb)

There might be songs as part of the BGM.
But most movies of this type & Hollywood movies in general just use pre-exsisting pop/rock songs that suit the situation well for the BGM.
It'll be interesting to see what ARR comes up with.

Vince croons for Rahman
Friday, May 29, 2009 23:59 IST Email
Mumbai: Hollywood star Vince Vaughn might do something for AR Rahman which he has never done before for anyone else. Sources from the industry are saying that the actor is expected to strain his vocal cords for the romantic comedy Couples Retreat for which the South Indian musician and composer has been roped in for the soundtrack.
Directed by Peter Billingsley, the film also stars Kristen Bell and Jean Reno.
Vince has never sung in a movie but had performed for the soundtrack Hollywood to the Heartland in a comedy show called 30 Days & 30 Nights. An insider tipped us about the development, "Rahman is scoring the sound for Couples Retreat in which Vince plays the lead. When Rahman was in the US sometime back, they had met up and had a discussion about the project. It is here that Rahman apparently bounced off the idea that Vince should sing for him in the movie and Vince was very excited about it. It is learnt that he will be singing a romantic track in the movie. This film will have Rahman composing the score for a totally different audience. It will have pure Western sounds." Rahman remained unavailable for comment.
What's Couples Retreat?
The film is a comedy that narrates the story of four diverse couples who settle into a tropical island resort for a vacation, with one of them there especially to work on their failing marriage.

AR Rahman gets Hollywood star croon to his music
June 04, 2009
AR Rahman’s next biggest project, Couple’s Retreat, will have Vince Vaughn and Kristen Bell starring in the leading roles. The latest we hear about this Peter Billingsley’s film is that Rahman had hummed a tune and Vince took to it like a house on fire. That is when Rahman decided to have Vince lend his voice for the song.
Vince is also reportedly happy with the offer but it is still not clear if he would sing the entire song or just a portion of it. The song will be a romantic melody, it is said. Couple’s Retreat is a romantic comedy. The film will hit the floors sometime soon, reports suggest.

Kailash ka Tarana
Kailash Kher is all set to make his musical debut in Hollywood alongside Oscar-winner A R Rahman with the film 'Couples Retreat' even as he gears up for the worldwide release of his third album 'Chaandan Mein'.
The singer, who will also begin his first international tour later this year is excited about performing at coveted platforms like the Hollywood Ball in Los Angeles. "I have been invited to perform at the Hollywood Ball and at the San Francisco and Brooklyn music festivals," Kher said.
The 33-year-old musician has sung in the 'Couples Retreat' which is Rahman's first international project after 'Slumdog Millionaire' and stars Hollywood A-listers like Vince Vaughn and Jason Bateman. "I have sung a 'tarana' in the film for Rahman and working with him is always a unique experience," said the singer while adding that he is open to other offers from the west but will only accept work of quality. "I will not accept a project just because it is coming from the west. It should be interesting work that gives me creative satisfaction," said the artiste.

Jean Reno to serenade AR Rahman?
Mumbai: Well known French actor Jean Reno has mouthed gruff dialogues for many blockbuster Hollywood movies including Mission Impossible, The Pink Panther, Godzillaand The Da Vinci Code, but has never exercised his vocal cords for a song. But now the award-winning actor is expected to make his singing debut for AR Rahman's Hollywood production Couples Retreat, written by funny-man Vince Vaughn.
A source close to the development says: "Jean Reno is expected to record a voice sample to be used in one of the songs in the Hollywood production, for which Rahman has given music. Vince Vaughn is also recording a song for the composer. Rahman seems to love Jean's deep, husky voice and felt that it would be apt for a particular comedy song."
However, the actual meeting between Jean and Rahman will happen only when the production gets underway. "But Rahman has already consulted the film-makers and Vince about his idea and they have given their nod. He is expected to travel to Hollywood next month and record both Vince and Jean's voice samples. This will definitely be Jean's first song in a movie," adds the source.

The KM music school is a brilliant thing for Rahman as well, as he continues to get more Hollywood offers, he needs to compose more and more orchestral music. And now for that, he doesn't need to fly to hungary n all for the orchestra. He can get most things done in Chennai itself :)
Is it just me or anyone has noticed that Rahman's string usage has become more prominent ever since Bombay dreams? :D

"Couples Retreat will have American rom-com music with a touch of my Indianness" - Rahman
By Subhash K. Jha, September 21, 2009 - 03:02 IST
The 'formula' works equally effectively across the cultural divide. If in Bollywood Rahman was expected to do a series of Rukmani rukmani after Roja in the West they want more Jai ho from this composing genius after Slumdog Millionaire.
But Rahman in his own quiet way is determined to not pander to western expectations. He made it very clear to the people behind his first full-fledged Hollywood film that he'd compose exactly what he thought to be the most apt music for the show.
Says Rahman, "Couples Retreat will have music that suits an American rom-com there're no real Indian sound in it. But yes, there will be a touch of Indianness in the sound. Otherwise what is the point of bringing me into the picture?"
Apparently there were numerous brainstorming sessions during which the sound of Slumdog Millaionire kept cropping up repeatedly.
Rahman gently but firmly steered the music away from the expected.
Chuckles the wizard of all composing things, "There's no point in doing something I've already done. I've reached a stage where I've to do new things. There're so many avenues to be explored. So Couples Retreat will be their (read: American) kind of music with my touch, done in my way."
Secretly Rahman agrees with those of his admirers and fans who feel Slumdog Millioniare is not among his best work.
Says a source, "He has done far superior work in films like Lagaan, Dil Se, Roja, Zubeida and the forthcoming Raavan and Blue. Friends keep telling him that. Slumdog was done in a hurry. In about 20 days flat. Rahman feels he could've done a lot better. He now wants the West to see some of his best."
Rahman is looking at Couples Retreat as his real launch into the West.

May be a really obvious answer, but may I ask, why is there a Tamil song for Couple's retreat which is a Hollywood film?
Also let me take this opportunity to mention the mind blowing tracks that I have heard from this album so far. Thanks

Why can't there be a Tamil song in a Couples Retreat? There have been other instances of this, e.g. Chaiya Chaiya in Inside Man and Swasame in The Accidental Husband. The people who scored the music for these films thought they were apt for their particular scenes or opening credits.
At the risk of sounding cliched, music has no language. In the case of BGMs, as long it emotes what is required why should language be a barrier?
Other world music (eg Spanish and African) are also used in Hollywood movies with no direct relevance to the content of the film, so why not Tamil?

Hi there, I wasn't saying that it is a bad thing.
I was just wondering whether it was some joint Tamil film or what not.
Genuinely would be interesting to see the chemistry between this track and what's going on screen.

May be ARR wants to project tamil language that way...There are lot of musical exchanges going around the world. Our people have embraced styles like Sufi,Pop,Rock,African pop, rap,Latin, Spanish,Irish and so on.....So its now their turn....
There are a few instances in movies like Nala Damayanthi that featured a full English song...Our songs always had English words in it...So may be ARR would have thought of singing a full fledged tamil song in a Hollywood film...
Rahman loves experiments...Isn't it???Its a big gamble...We have to wait for the movie to see if it has any Indian connection...

yeah, he wants to give a new 'style' for the western with introducing Tamil into the picture. Enough with French, Spanish, Hindi and what not, let Tamil take its walk of fame now ! :)

Irrespective of the musical richness our country possess, the West has a wrong notion like as if Hindustani and North Indian music is the music of India...In reality, we have Carnatic music and South India has its varied styles spanning across the four states...We hope ARR projects our music also......
I don't mind if he reuses his old classics in Hollywood movies.... His old songs can be very good orchestral pieces....

[tscii:7326bd32b0]"ACADEMY AWARD WINNING COMPOSER A.R. RAHMAN
MAKES FIRST FORAY INTO AMERICAN COMEDY FEATURE FILMS
WITH THE SCORE FOR "COUPLES RETREAT"
COMPOSED AND PRODUCED BY RAHMAN, "COUPLES RETREAT" FEATURES NEW SONGS "NANA" AND "SAJNA"
LOS ANGELES, CA - September 24, 2009 Academy Award-winning composer and internationally renowned musician A.R. Rahman makes his first foray into composing music for an American comedy feature film with Universal Pictures’ forthcoming romantic comedy, Couples Retreat. The soundtrack will be released via Relativity Media digitally on October 6, 2009, and in all retail outlets nationwide on October 13, 2009.
For Couples Retreat, A.R. Rahman has conjured up the sounds of a tropical island oasis fusing the laid-back rhythms of island music along with his gift for creating golden melodies. The opportunity to work on Couples Retreat was a welcome challenge for Rahman who created a score that complements the film’s light-hearted tone with just a hint of his signature "Indian" sound.
""There are so many musical avenues to be explored," says Rahman. "I’ve wanted to try new things and for a long time and had hoped to have the opportunity to venture into American comedy. This film presented a lot of creative challenges and was deeply rewarding to be apart of. "
A.R. Rahman captured the international spotlight after winning two Academy Awards® for ‘Best Original Score’ for his work on Slumdog Millionaire and ‘Best Original Song’ for "Jai Ho" (Music by Rahman, Lyrics by Gulzar). Rahman also became the first Indian artist to win a Golden Globe for ‘Best Original Score’ and took home numerous awards including the Critics Choice Award, Los Angeles Film Critics Award and a BAFTA for Slumdog Millionaire. Rahman’s score and soundtrack received critical praise from publications including Rolling Stone, Time Magazine, The New York Times and The Los Angeles Times.
A true artist who has redefined contemporary Indian music, A.R. Rahman is an icon in the world of cinematic scoring. He has been hailed by TIME magazine as the "Mozart of Madras" and was included in 2009’s TIME 100, which profiles the world’s most influential people, as well as Fast Company’s 100 Most Creative People in Business. He has also earned the designation of being one of the world’s top 25 all-time selling recording artists with sales of 100 million albums worldwide.
Couples Retreat is directed by Peter Billingsley and stars Vince Vaughn, Jason Bateman, Jon Favreau, Malin Akerman, Kristin Davis, Kristen Bell and Faizon Love. Based on an original idea of Vaughn’s, the comedy follows four Midwestern couples who embark on a journey to a tropical island resort. While one of the couples is there to work on their marriage, the other three set out to jet ski, spa and enjoy some fun in the sun. They soon discover that participation in the resort’s couples therapy is not optional. Suddenly, their group-rate vacation comes at a price. What follows is a hilarious look at real world problems faced by all couples. The film also stars Kali Hawk and Jean Reno.

When you smile, I smile with you,

You are my soul, my heart coming out to you,
Be my eyes when I can see,
Be my voice when I can speak,
Be my life when darkness creeps on me,
Hoo, sajna sajna sajna re,
Hai just sajna sajna sajna re
Sajna sajna sajna re
Hai just sajna sajna sajna re
Throw the stars that shine so bright,
Cross the sky and cross the night,
Making ways to be right by your side
Hold me close don’t let me go
Hold me tight don’t you say no
Save the love we have for ever more
Ho, sajna sajna sajna re,
Hai just sajna sajna sajna re
Sajna sajna sajna re
Hai just sajna sajna sajna re
When the fame is over, take me back(2)

[tscii:6680c9069b]Couples Retreat – Wordlessly mind-boggling
If A.R. Rahman had proved off his extraordinary adeptness on Indian touch with ‘Slumdog Millionaire’, he strikes marvelously with complete Hollywood-fangled melodies. The tunes are stunningly melodic and indeed aptly sound in accordance with film’s title ‘Couples Retreat’. The original soundtrack of ‘Couples Retreat’ has 15 melodies with uniquely spelled attributes.
SAJNA… SAJNA Re
Just heed to the fortepianos and mild-strike of chord with crystal-chimes accompanying them. Rahman adds to the Indianized touch by adding the Hindi word ‘Sajna Sajna Re…’ The English lyrics are mesmerizingly touching and perhaps, the western people wouldn’t have listened to such an appealing melody.
KURU KURU…
Vocal: A.R. Rahman
Fine! After uttering ‘Ellam Pugazhum Iraivan Oruvanukke’ – it’s one more turn to express his gratitude for his TAMIL. The song starts off with slow-rhythms of 6/8 March on soft-guitars later with slow-stringed running notes. The Tamil lyrics tuned in complete Hollywood style happen to be the best flavors. Totting up to the best panoramas is the unique-patterned rhythm on scissors. Sound engineering has been marvelously performed… Doubtlessly, KURU KURU is the best pick of soundtrack.
Jason and Cynthia Suite
Realms of stringed instruments as it keep playing on various octaves. The melodic notes are played on solo guitar and Cello joins the instrumentation in latter part. Merely after couple of minutes, the song is shifted to higher scales and it goes on with same notes. Trombones and oboes are played in final part. Moreover, it’s the best song that sweeps all on your senses.
NANA
It’s a Spanish-styled hip-hop with Blaaze’s specific vocalisms on rap lines. The beats over the synchronized drum pads keeps repeating while fill-ins over Brasses and trumpets over synthesizers does takes you straight into those ambiences.
TOUR OF THE VILAS
If you ever spellbound listening to ‘SAJNA SAJNA’, Rahman delivers the same tune over instrumentals. All through the track, the scales are raised and lowered. Beats over Congo-drums with vibes mingled in makes it sound yet more embellished. More than all, Rahman has utilized more instruments on various parts, say, like cymbals, solo violin, flute and pan flutes.
MEETING MARCEL
Sounds quite unique from previous numbers… It offers the touch of meditational relaxation music with the style of percussions inherited from Tai Chi. the melodiously refreshing tune suddenly transforms into an emotional genre with flutes, cellos, violins and other stringed instruments coalesced on the parts. We get to hear orchestral-hits here and there.
ITINERARY
Starts off with overpowering instrumentations over percussions, keyboards and stringed ones… Rahman has to thank his music supervisor John O’Brien for having engineered the entire group with such grandeur. Finally, after the fast-rushing instrumentals, you’ve Rahman’s vocalism echoing on higher tone.
UNDRESS
Wow! This is the prettiest work that any music lover would’ve heard. On the beginning note, we have Mridangam, veena taking off with predominance later with sync-bass. A perfect ‘Jugalbandhi’ treat for everyone.
SHARKS
The track has some traces of previous number MEETING MARCEL and the notes are almost the same. Precisely, it would be more appealing with the visuals on screens.
LUAU by John O’Brien
Making it blissfully done over the sound supervising, John O’Brien scores on his show with country music with 12-string acoustic guitars. The running beats on Congo-drums make an impressive sound.
SALVADORE
The song sounds much similar to Tamil song ‘Jumbhalaka’ that has the prelude starting off with Arabic intonation. The song has guitars and beats played on similar touch. As well, it has similarities with Rahman’s previous score for ‘Mein Alabeli’ in ‘Zubeida’.
INTERVENTION
The maestro roars again! Of course, put your best verdicts for the brilliant orchestration of symphony based track. Rahman’s vocalism on higher pitch emblazons it stunningly. If our guesses are right, the track should precisely be inserted somewhere during emotional sequences.
The Waterfall
Sounds to be a romantic track with guitars and slow-stringed instruments on show with dominance of flute in initial parts….
JASON AND CYNTHIA – PIANO THEME
The track doesn’t differ from the previous version in any vistas. Rahman trenchantly brings the mix of various soft instruments of piano, guitar and violin. The slow stringed chords do accompany right throughout the song.
ANIMAL SPIRITS
The musical track of ‘Couples Retreat’ winds-up with ‘Animal Spirits’ that has astoundingly marvelous score. It’s a track brimmed with full of high-spirited delight. So are the beats and instruments with perfect blend. The middle part has slow-running orchestrated stringed instruments while, again the last 20 seconds get back to the same cheerful touch.
Final Take:
Trust us! if ‘Slumdog Millionaire’ was Rahman’s ticket to Hollywood, ‘Couples Retreat’ has more probabilities of making it big for more fetes again. Especially the songs, ‘Sajna Sajna’ and ‘Kuru Kuru’ are sure to create sensational ripples all over the global market.

[tscii:8e335e616b]Couples Retreat – Music Review
Posted by VIP On September - 25 - 2009
I didn’t quite like the vocals in Sajna (which I believe is done by Vince Vaughn, he is supposed to have recorded a song for the movie), mainly due to the corny lyrics, but Rahman’s mesmerizing arrangement is more than enough to have you hooked to the track. The big surprise comes in the next track. How often do you get to hear Tamil song playing in a Hollywood soundtrack? Well here is one for you, Rahman crooning a chirpy Kuru Kuru set to a mildly folksy orchestration. A really addictive track this one, as I am discovering at this precise moment. Jason and Cynthia Suite on the other hand begins on a more solemn note, Rahman employing all his orchestral splendour to a gradual buildup over three minutes before springing a surprise mode change to a more folksy segment led by the flute for the next two minutes. Nana which comes next, has a lot of tribal sounding words interspersed with rap in a carnivalesque track. I couldn’t discern Blaaze’s voice among the rappers. And I think the kid’s voice belongs to Rahman’s son Alim who had reportedly recorded a song in this movie.
In spite of a slight resemblance to Jaage Hai’s orchestral sequence in its grand opening, Tour of the Villas is an absolute treat, an instrumental and more elaborately orchestrated version of Sajna. Strangely enough for a minute-long segment in between the song goes into a karaoke mode without a leading tune, just the backing instruments playing on. Of course that takes no credit off this short and sweet track. Meeting Marcel, the next track, is a spiritual song, albeit arranged in a sinister manner. While the first half with a folk tinge is dominated by the flute, the latter half taking on a darker tone belongs to the violins. Itinerary is typical background track material rather than something intended for a CD. It is made up of a sequence of different tunes which wouldn’t make much sense unless listened to while watching the movie. Undress sounds very Indian and very nicely so, thanks to the extensive use of ghatam, no negative connotation intended mind you. Lasting just over 1.5 minutes, this track would have been a perfect fit in a movie like Lagaan or Swades. It will be interesting to see how the picturisation of this happens (my interest has nothing to do with the title I assure you!).
Sharks is another mindblowing track albeit a totally classical-oriented one (Puriya Dhanasri/Panthuvarali the raga is I guess). With the violins playing at a frantic pace to an equally frenzied percussion, this song took me back to Rahman’s classic Hai Rama for a moment. Luau refers to a Hawaiian feast. And John O’Brien’s sole score for the movie is quite evocative of the party mood with its very native arrangement. Salvadore is superb fusion, Kailash Kher’s well executed Hindustani tarana (similar to thillana in Carnatic) mixed brilliantly with a Latin/Middle Eastern instrumentation. Intervention is another track marked by its orchestral opulence, and the combo with Rahman’s soulful humming is quite deadly! The result, another totally riveting track.
Similar to Itinerary, The Waterfall also features a collation of varied tunes which would be better viewed than listened to. Rahman produces an elegant reprise to Jason and Cynthia Suite with Jason and Cynthia Piano Theme, cutting down on the orchestral elements and making it more easy on the ear. Things are rounded off with another bouncy track, Animal Spirits, which starts off as a spruced up version of Jason and Cynthia theme but then moves on along a different line for about two minutes where things take a turn, with a revisit to the opening sequence of Tour of the Villas.
After a long hiatus post winning the Oscars suddenly there is a deluge of Rahman songs. While Blue was more commercialised and Passage at a more esoteric one, Couples Retreat combines a bit of both. Honestly I didn’t expect a Rahman soundtrack to displace Passage from the position of his best soundtrack this year, so soon! And now the million dollar question is, will the movie turn out to be worth such a brilliant effort. Hope it does. You can listen to the soundtrack here.
Music Aloud’s rating – 8.5/10
Recommended tracks – Kuru Kuru, Salvadore, Intervention, Tour of the villas, Undress

Rahman takes Tamil to Hollywood
IndiaGlitz [Saturday, September 26, 2009]
For the first time in the history of Hollywood, a full-length Tamil song would feature in 'Couples Retreat', thanks to 'Mozart of Madras' A R Rahman.
The number 'Kurukuru Kan....' has been sung by Afro Nisha, whose voice has a striking resemblence to that of Rahman.
The Oscar award winning music composer said a few days back that his music for 'Couples Retreat' would be completely Western but with a touch of Indianess.
"There's no point in doing something I've already done. I've reached a stage where I've to do new things. There're so many avenues to be explored. So Couples Retreat will be their kind of music with my touch, done in my way," Rahman said.
Directed by Peter Billingsley, the comedy revolves around four couples who settle into a tropical island resort for a vacation. While one of the couples is there to work on the marriage, the others fail to realise that participation in the resort's therapy sessions is not optional. It stars actors like Jason Bateman, Vince Vaughn, Malin Akerman and Kristen Bell.

Really enjoying Sajna. Is it sung by John Legend? I wish ARR would've turned Kuru Kuru into a fully fledged song. It would've been really great! Haven't really listened to the other tracks yet. I think they'd be better appreciated after watching the movie.

[tscii:630836e54d]TRT reviews Couples Retreat movie - a great soundtrack that fits with the movie's fun
Juliana Serrano
Issue date: 10/9/09 Section: Entertainment
No one goes to a Vince Vaughn movie expecting an epiphany. In that sense, Couples Retreat gets high marks for meeting expectations. The film is simply a funny movie that lets the viewer unwind and laugh at penis jokes for two hours without needing to delve into the deeper meaning. Something, I would wager, we could all use over fall break.
Couples Retreat follows four couples who go to an island paradise designed to help troubled marriages. Only one of the couples actually wants to work on their marriage, but because the island promises water sports and fun, the others agree to tag along. The couples do not realize that the "couple bonding" sessions on the schedule are mandatory and that they cannot just lounge around all day. Hilarious adventures ensue and the couples end up appreciating the marriage counseling more than they thought they would.
Needless to say, not much deeper meaning is to be had.
Besides Vince Vaughn, the movie has several other big names, including Sex and the City's Kristin Davis, "Veronica Mars"' Kristen Bell and "Arrested Development"'s Jason Bateman. While they may not deliver Oscar-winning performances, the characters in this movie have memorable personalities, with distinctive quirks ranging from Bateman's anal attitude to Jon Favreau's (I Love You, Man) Vince-Vaughn-part-two personality.
It is a staple of Vaughn's flicks that awkward moments abound, and this movie is no letdown. There was a yoga scene so risqué the mother seated next to me had to close her little boy's eyes, and a masturbation scene that would have made Sacha Baron Cohen proud. But instead of the nausea permeating in Brüno, the audience seemed to receive these scenes with the necessary humor, judging by the peals of laughter.
For those not fans of that brand of humor, don't worry. This movie also has some great moments with jokes that have nothing to do with toilets or sex. An endearing toddler, for example, completely steals the show with his one-liners. He is not just cute - he is downright hilarious, even if some of his jokes are a tad mature for his age.
In addition to its humor, this movie provides beautiful scenery of the island paradise - even Vaughn muses, "This place looks like a screensaver!" - as well as a great soundtrack that fits with the movie's fun, escapist theme, polished by two-time Academy-Award winner A.R. Rahman.
The ending of the movie is incredibly cliché, and the final 30 minutes tie up loose ends in a way that will satisfy chick-flick aficianados. But these moments are anomalies, as the men in the movie come across as bitter and a little chauvinistic, which can cancel out the romantic factor.
In terms of romantic frivolity, the film succeeds. But even then, a movie can only go so far. Some of the romantic moments are forced, stilted and transparent. The movie tries to leave the viewer with a deeper understanding of divorce and recuperation, but the message gets lost in Vaughn's schtick, which permeates from beginning to end.
Couples Retreat appeals to both males and females, and is well worth the price of admission - even if you're just there to ogle the numerous bikini-clad girls. In addition, the preview leaves plenty of silliness for the movie. Sounds like the perfect opportunity for a retreat beforefinals arrive

Couples Retreat is far from paradise

Couples Retreat suggests what life might have been like if the guys from "Swingers" had grown up, moved to the suburbs and turned into lame, sitcommy cliches.
Jon Favreau and Vince Vaughn team up again, on screen and on the script (along with Dana Fox), for this broad comedy about four couples who go on a tropical vacation together.
In theory, they're all there to support their friends Jason (Jason Bateman) and Cynthia (Kristen Bell) as they try to save their marriage through the couples' counseling the resort offers. Little do they know they'll get sucked into agonizing therapy sessions that reveal their own rifts. For example: Vaughn's character, Dave, doesn't care about picking out tile to redo the kitchen. His wife, Ronnie (Malin Akerman), does. It's a laugh riot if you think Paul Reiser's Couplehood is funny ?and we haven't even gotten to their painfully cute young son whose defining personality trait is urinating and pooping in inappropriate places.
Under the direction of Peter Billingsley (Ralphie from A Christmas Story), another longtime Vaughn friend and collaborator making his first feature, Couples Retreat veers back and forth in a jarring way between crude sexual humor and supposedly poignant moments. The couples endure forced nudity and a wildly erotic yoga class; Favreau's character, Joey, and his wife, Lucy (Kristin Davis), who married right after high school, each try to get it on with their respective massage therapists. But all must also bare their souls, which feels wedged-in and unconvincing compared to the proliferation of physical humor.
Faizon Love rounds out the group as the divorced Shane, who brings along his 20-year-old girlfriend, Trudy (Kali Hawk), a shrill party girl who likes to call him "Daddy" and pour hot wax on his naked chest.
Each of these characters is exactly the same person the whole way through, until one night when they all magically experience an epiphany that makes them more communicative, patient and loving. During such moments, a distracting, feel-good score ?surprisingly from Slumdog Millionaire Oscar-winner A R Rahman ?pipes in early and often.
Couples Retreat makes fun of the people who run the place, including the New Age-y mastermind, Monsieur Marcel (Jean Reno in a braided tail and a Speedo), and the condescending concierge, Sctanley (Peter Serafinowicz) ?spelled with a "c." But ultimately it embraces the very lessons the resort is trying to teach. It also finds time for a little shameless product placement along the way: an extended ad for 'Guitar Hero,' right as the movie is approaching its big, revelatory climax.
A few funny lines and ideas emerge here and there ?the rigid Jason's fondness for PowerPoint presentations is vaguely amusing ?but Couples Retreat mostly feels repetitive and overlong at nearly two hours. You wouldn't mind getting voted off this island.
Couples Retreat, a Universal Pictures release, is rated PG-13 on appeal for sexual content and language.

[tscii:b20e56db74]Did Critics Enjoy Their 'Couples Retreat'?
by Michael Krumboltz ¡¤ October 8, 2009
"Couples Retreat," a comedy written by and starring Vince Vaughn and Jon Favreau, is the only new release to hit theaters this weekend. It's certainly the most star-studded comedy in a while, with Kristin Davis, Jason Bateman, Kristen Bell, Malin Akerman, and Faizon Love rounding out the cast.
The movie is about four couples who take advantage of a group rate to an island resort, but when they get there, they discover that they must engage in counseling and therapeutic exercises if they want to stay. It tries to mine laughs from the ridiculous tests they endure in the name of strengthening their relationships. Does it succeed? Let's see what the critics have to say.
If there's one word you never want to hear used to describe a comedy, it's this: "depressing." Unfortunately, that's how Michael Phillips of the Chicago Tribune sums up the film. Giving the movie 2 stars out of 4, Phillips also calls the film "sloppily written," but in regards to the actors, he comments that he enjoyed "nearly everyone on-screen."
Entertainment Weekly is a touch kinder. Critic Owen Glieberman gives the film a B-, describing it as "funnier-at-times-than-you-expect." Hardly a world-class endorsement, but Mr. Glieberman does give credit to "Swingers" vets Vaughn and Favreau for giving the film some pop. Respected critic Roger Ebert calls out Vaughn's "well-timed and smart dialogue" as one of the movie's better features.
Something else the film has going for it: the scenery. And no, that doesn't mean Favreau in a bathing suit. The film was shot entirely on location in Bora Bora, Tahiti, and the gorgeous visuals show off this island paradise. As Favreau's character aptly puts it, "this place looks like a screen saver."
Another item of note: the film was directed by Peter Billingsley, who, once upon a time, played Ralphie in the holiday classic "A Christmas Story." As mentioned in an earlier Buzz Log post, Billingsley and Vaughn are actually old friends, having met as kids while working on an afterschool special about steroids. Billingsley went on to produce many of Favreau's previous movies, and he shaved his head for a cameo role in "Iron Man."
Overall, this appears to be a movie for those who know what they're getting into: a somewhat predictable comedy with some nice scenery and funny lines. And after his last two movies set during the holidays -- "Fred Claus" and "Four Christmases" -- Vince Vaughn fans will probably be happy to just spend a little time in the sun with him and his buddies

Vince Vaughn and Jon Favreau swung to the top of the boxoffice returns on Friday as their new comedy "Couples Retreat" debuted in the top spot.
The PG-13-rated comedy, directed by Peter Billingsley, about four couples looking to repair their relationships in an island resort, took in an estimated $12.3 million in North America.
The opening, which will contribute to an opening weekend in the high $20 million range, provided welcome news for Universal, which earlier in the week promoted two of its execs, Adam Fogelson and Donna Langley, to replace its former chairmen Marc Shmuger and David Linde, who had suffered through a string of underperforming movies.
Meanwhile, word-of-mouth led Paramount’s limited expansion of the R-rated horror tale, Oren Peli's "Paranormal Activity," to a fourth-place showing.
The movie, which was introduced via midnight screenings two weeks ago, moved into just 159 theaters, where it attracted a bullish $2.5 million for the day.
Holdovers filled out the other slots in the top five.
Claiming second place was Sony's horror comedy "Zombieland" which collected $4.8 million, in the first day of its second weekend.
In the third spot, the same studio's animated movie "Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs," hung in with $3.1 million as it entered its fourth weekend.
Animation also figured in the fifth slot where Disney's 3D double bill of "Toy Story" and "Toy Story 2" picked up another $2 million.

[tscii:9fe06c6da2] Couples Retreat Soundtrack Review
Couples Retreat Soundtrack
by Chris Neilan
The Couples Retreat soundtrack. A.R. Rahman has sold more than 100 million records worldwide, plus 200 million cassettes. Yes, cassettes. He's one of the world's all time top selling recording artists, and a very influential figure indeed. He was also the first Indian citizen to win an Academy Award for his Slumdog Millionaire soundtrack in 2008 ¨C and just to show off, he won two. For the Couples Retreat soundtrack, his first work with a Hollywood studio, the Indian John Williams has produced a humourless if not entirely charmless accompaniment to a Vaughn/Favreau comedy, which treads a thin line between orchestral ambience and inconsequence, and ends up sounding something like James Bond's massage music.
Melding mild intrigue with jaunty woodwind and bongo rhythms might make a fitting accompaniment to the film's tropical island imagery, but it sure doesn't make for a thrilling listen. Pleasant would be a good way to describe it, if I wasn't so tempted to call it dull. And if I wasn't so assaulted with images of middle class men in hemp trousers hanging dreamcatchers over their futons.
Rahman's Slumdog Millionaire soundtrack was a different kettle of fish altogether, but applying his undoubted compositional skill to a multiplex friendly relationship comedy seems to have had a detrimental effect on his brio ¨C the weaker tracks here have little more character than the title music to an RPG. Maybe some of the appeal of mixing traditional Indian musicality with the atypical symphony scoring of a Hollywood crowd-pleaser is lost in translation.

First of all ARR has to take a decision whether he is going to an orchestral way or going to compose in his own style.
SDM got recognition not only because of music but also due to a neat movie, good screenplay and excellent acting. The music was composed in Rahman's style as a complete fusion between the styles of the West and Indian.
There had been many great electronic composers in the West like Vangelis(he has composing from 1970's and our ARR derived his modern sound from the Greek maestro), Hans Zimmer etc etc...and they are used to symphonic electronic scores...There are several Chinese and Japanese composers like Kitaro who are popular there.
So ARR has to tread a careful path there as orchestral scores are very common there and it may not garner much attention if ARR does the same. So he has to compose in his own style and give songs like Netrillatha Matram, Chandralekha kind of songs as they either sound Indian nor Western...
He should choose good movies with a strong story line....This is IMMHO...

I have seen this movie on tuesday and must say that the movie sucked big time ! But ARR was wonderful throughout the movie. The movie had a good plot and wonderful locations to show his musical geniuses and penetrate into the scenes.
Kuru Kuru wasnt fully utilized in the movie and was just 30 sec thing. The RR brought the theme of an island and was going along well with the movie.
It would have been another great attempt from ARR, if the movie had a good script and a breezing screenplay.

Exactly my thought... even if ARR comes out with brilliant orchestral scores, it wouldn't catch much attention because they are used to such stuff. Even in WOHE only scores such as Dacoit duel got some attention.. the traditional ones got overlooked. Not only the orchestral score, songs like Dreams on fire, Sajna would sound cheesy to western ear coz they are all too familiar.

[tscii:0c3e277486]Couple's Retreat -music review by james southall
I never trust a film whose title is missing an apostrophe; and it looks like many people share my view, if Couples Retreat’s box office performance is any indication. It’s the rather surprising choice to be A.R. Rahman’s first-ever Hollywood film, coming on the heels of his well-deserved Oscar win.Rahman’s music is – much like Slumdog Millionaire – a bit of a hodgepodge of everything but the kitchen sink. The album opens with a couple of songs – romantic Bollywood stylings in “Sajna” and then a hint of hip-hop in “Kurukuru Kan”. Then comes the first piece of score – an unabashedly, gloriously over-the-top love theme which starts on guitars before the full orchestra swells. I doubt any Hollywood-based composer would even try that sort of thing any more – and Rahman pulls it off very well.
Rahman’s score certainly wears its heart on its sleeve. An Indian influence does creep in occasionally (though is more keenly felt in the songs); but the music is mainly orchestral, veering between the sweeping romance already mentioned, some tuneful suspense music and even some dramatic action material, with choppy strings and brass. There’s nothing overtly comedic (well, maybe the Hawaiian hula music!), but he wouldn’t have got away with music like this in any other genre. The album is hugely enjoyable – memorable tunes, great songs – I hope it’s the first of many ventures from Bollywood’s king into Hollywood. *** 1/2

Hollywood film 'Couples Retreat' in race controversy
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
London, Nov 16 (PTI) 'Couples Retreat', Oscar-winning- music director A R Rahman's first Hollywood venture after 'Slumdog Millionaire', is at the centre of a race controversy after two black actors were removed from a poster used to promote it in Britain.
The US poster for the movie, a comedy starring Vince Vaughn and Kristin Davis, show all eight principal actors -- six of whom are white and two black, Daily Mail online reported.
However, the poster in Britain, where the film is on general release, omits actors Faizon Love and Kali Hawk.
The film, about four couples who go on holiday together and receive therapy to improve their relationships opened in theatres last month.
A spokesman for makers Universal Pictures confirmed that the change had been made "to simplify the poster to actors who are most recognisable in international markets".

Couples Retreat crosses $100m mark
Couples Retreat, Oscar winner musician A.R. Rahman’s first venture into mainstream Hollywood, has reportedly crossed the 100 million dollar mark at North American box office.
This 113 minutes comedy was released worldwide on October 8 in Australia and New Zealand and October 9 in USA. It has reportedly grossed over 102 million dollars domestically besides over 20 million dollars overseas.
Shot in Tahiti (French Polynesia) and USA, it revolves around four couples who go to a tropical-island resort for vacationing. It is yet to be released in many countries.
Acclaimed Indo-American statesman Rajan Zed, in a statement in Nevada (USA) today, said that it proved that Hollywood-Bollywood marriage could bring desired results at box office also.
Zed, who is chairperson of Indo-American Leadership Confederation, hoped that more creative-technical-financial alliances would be formed between Hollywood and Bollywood in the coming future.
Rahman provided original music for Couples Retreat, besides writing and performing two songs: Na Na and Sajna. Rahman’s son A. R. Ameen also sang in Na Na.
Directed by Emmy nominated Peter Billingsley (Dinner for Five), it stars MTV winner Vince Vaughn (Wedding Crashers), Golden Globe winner Jason Bateman (Arrested Development), Golden Globe nominated Kristin Davis (Sex and the City), etc. Producers were Vince Vaughn and Scott Stuber (Role Models).

Story By: Businessofcinema.com Team updated on: Nov 23, 2009
MUMBAI: A.R. Rahman makes his first foray into composing music for an American comedy feature film with Universal Pictures' forthcoming romantic comedy, Couples Retreat. The soundtrack will be released via Saregama India digitally and in all retail outlets nationwide on 30 November.
For Couples Retreat, Rahman has conjured up the sounds of a tropical island oasis fusing the laid-back rhythms of island music. Rahman created a score that complements the film’s light-hearted tone with a hint of his signature Indian sound.
"There are so many musical avenues to be explored. I've wanted to try new things and for a long time and had hoped to have the opportunity to venture into American comedy. This film presented a lot of creative challenges and was deeply rewarding to be a part of ," says Rahman.
Couples Retreat is directed by Peter Billingsley and stars Vince Vaughn, Jason Bateman, Jon Favreau, Malin Akerman, Kristin Davis, Kristen Bell and Faizon Love.

By Moviebuzz | Monday, 18 January , 2010, 21:56
Saregama India launched Rahman's latest Hollywood film Couples Retreat sound track in India at a Chennai five star on Monday (Jan 18) evening. AR Rahman, Gautam Menon along with Apurv Nagpal CEO of Saregama India were present
The film stars Vince Vaughn and set in an island resort were five couples land up. Said Rahman :"I chose this film because they came to me even before the Oscars. I felt touched otherwise normally after an Oscar people don’t do a comedy. But it was a pleasure doing the album. I enjoyed the freedom they gave me plus the budget for the orchestra. I prefer doing Hollywood films where they want me rather than me wanting them."
The album has a song Kuru kuru... with lyrics by Rahman in Tamil apart from songs in Sanskrit, Spanish and Hindi. He has also used classical piano and African influences.
Gautham declared that he had come as a fan of Rahman and was happy that the album was released now in India. "I saw the film in America because of Rahman and I am glad Saregama has taken the initiative."
Rahman disclosed that the song Sajna... has been nominated for the Academy awards. His son has also sang a song in the album.

Rahman song shortlisted for Oscars
TIMES NEWS NETWORK
Chennai: Still basking in his Oscar glory , AR Rahman scored another point when his debut Hollywood film Couples Retreat got shortlisted for the 2010 Academy Awards. It is my first Hollywood film, and I am happy that the track NaNa has been shortlisted, said Rahman on Monday. There are 60 other tracks, and the road from shortlists to nominations is a long one, but I am glad that the track has been appreciated, added the Mozart of Madras, who walked off with two Oscars for Slumdog Millionaire in 2009.
Rahman, who along with Blazee and Vivianne Chaix wrote the lyrics of NaNa , had also included Sajna a Hindi track and Kurukuru Kan in Tamil in the Hollywood film directed by Peter Billingsley. I could use Hindi, Tamil and Spanish because it blended with the film, which is how I work, said Rahman.
Although flooded with offers, Rahman chose a comedy for his Hollywood debut. After winning two Oscars, a person may not choose to work on a comedy film, but I chose it because the pressure would be less. I also enjoyed working on the film because of the budget and the freedom, said Rahman.
Working at Sony MGMs legendary sound studio was a wonderful journey said the musician famed for working during the graveyard hours in Chennai. I wanted to take two days off and visit Middlesex University to accept the honorary doctorate they were offering, but the studio in LA was aghast. How can you get the films music out of your system they wondered, he recalled with a laugh. This where Mary Poppins , Star Wars and other films were made, said Rahman , clearly still in awe.
Looking tired but upbeat, Rahman, who has gone for a new hair do his curly locks have made way for straight hair told TOI: The last one year has been a rush of awards, but I am desperate for (making) music now. More Hollywood projects are in the pipeline, but I am not at liberty to disclose anything now, he said.

[tscii:79f39f286f]Good to have different composers: A.R.Rahman
CHENNAI: “There are some great songs coming out in Tamil film music. There are several passionate compositions being made, not necessarily tune-wise, but production-wise. Good to have different kinds of composers, but I do miss those great melodies,” music composer A. R. Rahman told The Hindu.
Speaking on the sidelines of the launch of his soundtrack for the Hollywood film ‘Couples Retreat’ organised by Sa Re Ga Ma here on Monday, Rahman says his compositions for upcoming films ‘Enthiran’, ‘Sultan The Warrior’ and ‘Raavan’ would be distinctly different from each other and that of ‘Vinnaithandi Varuvaya’, which was launched recently.
His work for ‘Vinnaithandi Varuvaya’, the first Tamil film post his Oscar victory has instantly become a mega-hit, with fans raving about the breezy melodies all over the internet.
Rahman who has been busy giving live shows, says the experience is beautiful. “Seeing all the fans is really wonderful. Without them, it’s like a cemetery. When we usually rehearse the day before our shows, it’s all empty, and the next day it is such a great feeling to see fans turning up in such large number.”
On his work for ‘Couples Retreat’, he says that Vince Vaughn and Peter Billingsley approached him before the Oscars, saying they were moved by his music. “They gave me a lot of freedom and a good budget for my orchestra. This is my first mainstream Hollywood film,” he says.
Interestingly, the sound track of the film has music from different genre, and lyrics, in a host of languages, including Tamil, Hindi and even Sanskrit. “The story gave such scope. In fact, I couldn’t find a lyricist to pen the Tamil song (kuru kuru kann...), and I wrote it myself,” he chuckles.
Another highlight of the sound track is that Rahman’s son has lent his voice for one of the compositions. “He was playing and just humming something and I recorded it on my laptop. Later, when I listened to it, I liked the voice and decided to use it. He is still very young and training.”
On his recent visit to Australia and the attacks on Indians there, he says: “I interacted with students as well as Australian government officials. What has happened, has happened. We have to fix the problem rather than aggravate it to nasty levels.” Rahman is also keen on strengthening his music conservatory. “Our students are doing well and I would like to give the conservatory more attention.”
On several biographies of his being published, the composer says: “One of them, which is out, does not have the right tone. I am collaborating with Munni Kabir and we are working on one. It’s not a biography, but it has my take on different things. Most of my friends feel I am too young for a biography.”

Source - www.arrfansclub.com
Its official a total of 63 songs will compete for the Oscars in the Original song category.
The List released on the 16th features songs like Ryan Bingham and T Bone Burnett’s “The Weary Kind” from “Crazy Heart,” Leona Lewis’ “I See You” from “Avatar” and Paul McCartney’s “(I Want to) Come Home” from “Everybody’s Fine,” and some left-field (and far afield) choices like “The Word Is Love” from “Oy Vey! My Son is Gay!!” (which is a real movie, by the way).
Rahman’s maiden venture Couples Retreat also features in the list in the form of the foot taping Caribbean flavored say Na na.We will need to wait and watch how thing unwrap.
On Jan. 12, random clips from each song will be screened for members of the Music Branch of the academy. Nominees will be determined by a point system vote. If two or more songs (up to five) achieve a score of 8.25 or more, they will be the nominees, which will be announced, along with the contenders in the rest of the Oscar categories, on Feb. 2.
