'Chandrababu' chanceea illa need not even consider him in this list. He is a master comedian (sabash meena)

Sachu? If we consider Sachu, then we'll have to consider TR Ramachandran and he has a bigger claim. Sachu has never been funny as far as I know but avanga mokkai pottadhu yaaravadhu quote panna mudiyuma? Indha vishayathula, Sarala's mokkai in 100's of films is legendary. IMO, Sarala has a bigger claim than Sachu - Sachu is mediocre(vandhu pogara sathame theriyadhu), Sarala has a special record in being in the limelight for unfunny.

Let's face off Thangavelu vs Cho vs Chandrababu.
Idhula, nobody has dissed Chandrababu so unless anyone is vehemently against him, he will also be out of the list.

Thangavelu vs Cho - final round. Let's change the debate format.
Let's recall atleast 3 different instances of outstanding comedy by each. And let's recall some kaattu mokkais (atleast 3 of them) for each.
Let's debate the nature of their humour and why a) it was atleast funny for the time b) it stands the test of time or doesnt stand c) it is singularly unfunny.

For Cho, as Joe said, the humour is political. For example, the scene in Guru Sishyan where he plays on his hand to indicate symbols of DMK, ADMK and Congress to indicate the pachondithanam of the character was great but context specific. Then again, considering the context, it was surely funny.

For Thangavelu, is there something called his style or does it depend on the script. Did he rise above the script ever? Cho sure did.

Summarising:
1. Define the style of humour of your candidate - TV or Cho
2. Describe why that style can be funny for atleast a set of people given the context
3. Did they rise above the script ever - infact this is a consideration that surely brings Sarala in the list becuse how can we credit her for Sathi Leela? So, give instances of where TV or Cho rose above the script with their unique brand of humour
4. Give a rough estimate of their strike rate (ie) if they have roughly acted in n films, and you roughly estimate m instances as funny, then strike rate =m/n. Subjectivity accepted.

Cho is satiric. He is basically good in spoofing certain segment or level of folks - mostly politicians. Good satirist, and is very contemporary. But fed with mokka lines, he is unfunny.

Tanggavelu - despite what PR said - has fine delivery and timing. His lines can be mokkai in others hand (say, the wooden pre-Pandyarajan eye roller TR Ramachandran), but he makes it funny.

So, intha vishyatula Tanggavelu gets the spot.

2. Kosteen arakuraiyaathaan purinjathu. But never mind.

Cho's best moments appeal to people in the know, namely those who follow politics and happenings.

Tanggaveloo's appeal to pretty wide range (at that time, and some at this time, except of course you-know-who and you-know-who). Especially family audience.

3.
Answer in the first kosteen. But both are not good in slapstick, or body language. Rendu peerum out. (I did laugh at KAT's hair/wig at the end of Nam Naadu, though). And Cho's Post TRR, PrePandyarajan eye rolling never really caught on.

4. Strike ellam sollurengga. Leesa thaan puriyuthu.

Okay, let me put it this way.

If Cho is Model 29 Smith & Wesson, than KAT is Walter PPK. First one, slow, but can blow your head clean off. Second one, faster, being fully automatic, but lesser damage.

My choice would be the great Oy Gee Mahendra.

The whole idea, as prabhuram would put it, here was to take the 'holy cow's and generate an alternate discussion on why they need not be holy cows - an attempt at de-deification, let's say. Which is why we didnt spare NSK even.
I am very open to including GM in the mix since NOV feels strongly against him. (Sonia gandhi-ai varutha paduthittu nalla irukka mudiyuma adhanaala I'll give weightage to one NOV over 100 hubbers :-) ). GM-kum case podungappa. Infact, given my intention, and given the hubbers' preference, I should have actually directed the conversation towards Gounder's failings earlier

Even had it ended it where it ought to have, it earns a mild smile. Not worth the whole effort of setting up the newspaper reading scene, item etc. So I call it inefficient.

Note there are some forms of jokes where the elaborate set-up is a red-herring and the punchline is elsewhere. That is a well built joke. Similarly for puns, where you are judged by groan-level, the elaborate build up (usually due to avoiding the giveaway words) is again funny.

The rest of the jokes should be judged based on the 'efficiency'. i.e. maximum laughter with minimum fuss. That is where TV doesn't even take off.

Cho is satiric. He is basically good in spoofing certain segment or level of folks - mostly politicians. Good satirist, and is very contemporary. But fed with mokka lines, he is unfunny.

Tanggavelu - despite what PR said - has fine delivery and timing. His lines can be mokkai in others hand (say, the wooden pre-Pandyarajan eye roller TR Ramachandran), but he makes it funny.

So, intha vishyatula Tanggavelu gets the spot.

2. Kosteen arakuraiyaathaan purinjathu. But never mind.

Cho's best moments appeal to people in the know, namely those who follow politics and happenings.

Tanggaveloo's appeal to pretty wide range (at that time, and some at this time, except of course you-know-who and you-know-who). Especially family audience.

Answer in the first kosteen. But both are not good in slapstick, or body language. Rendu peerum out. (I did laugh at KAT's hair/wig at the end of Nam Naadu, though). And Cho's Post TRR, PrePandyarajan eye rolling never really caught on.

4. Strike ellam sollurengga. Leesa thaan puriyuthu.

Okay, let me put it this way.

If Cho is Model 29 Smith & Wesson, than KAT is Walter PPK. First one, slow, but can blow your head clean off. Second one, faster, being fully automatic, but lesser damage.

One thing for sure. Cho's comedies does not stand the test of time. As Joe said, Muhamad Bin Tughlak may appeal to us, who keep a tab on history of politics and stuff. But regular folks would not understand it at all. Plus they are mostly attacks on some issue, some incident or some personality.

Tanggavelu's comedy are gentler. In fact, he is credited (or blamed, up to your preference) for the rise of separate comedy track. I believe NSK started it, but Tanggavelu popularised it with the success of Kalyana Parisu.

Forget KP, I wonder if you still do not laugh at his antics in Adutta Veetu Pen. Once I laughed till I teared. I also love the way he says, "Ayookkia payaley".

So, Cho deserves to be on that list.

While the primary grouse against Cho is that his political humour doesnt stand passage of time, the very fact that following generation like me, and following-following generation like prabhuram could actually relate to it breaks that argument. But for me, the problem is choice between Thangavelu and Cho - ennanna, while Cho's humour, once you can figure out the context, is laugh out loud funny, thangavelu at the best evokes mild smile for me. More explanation later
