Tamil TV serials-A nostalgic view

thinking about the current state of tamil serials being telecast in various channels all day long, one can see a same pattern in all these serials and noone can blame the producers except the audience themselves.

and thinking deeply about tamil serials, i also think how serials begun in tamil and how they went on and the advancements made in the mean time and also the degeneration into the present level.

the year is 1984 and it signifies many things in my nostalgic trip down memory lane.

in 1984 the first tamil Tv in india, chennai tholaikatchi started beaming colour broadcast of tamil programs,
the year 1984 India celebrated silver jubilee of television in india.
and in 1984 first star nite program in tamil was conducted by chennai doordarshan.(a memorable events particpated by all film stars and drama personalities)

and most of all 1984 is the year in which my family actually bought a TV set as our own.

although i have remembed the first movie i saw in Tv is porter ponnusamy- a thengai srinivasan movie(a porter in day and do-gooder by night).
we watched in awe and amusement in whatever was shown in those days , like,
kanmani poonga,
kanbom karpom,
chitrahaar,
chitra mala,
vayalum vaazhvum,
ethiroli,
munnottam,
oliyum oliyum,
tuesday weekly drama,
sunday tamil movie, saturday hindi movie,
regional movies in many days, and so on..

also my brother mastered the art of turning antenna(remember? the three long aluminium sticks in our mottai madi)in specific directions made us watch the ceylon Tv called rupavahini -in which we watched ssome tamil programs.

coming back to serials.....

my brother and me have long debated on the first tamil tv serials,

me saying its the pathinaalavadhu virundhali(14th guest) and him saying S V sekar's vanna kolangal.
that debate continued for long, with each vehementally supporting his claim.

14vadhu virundhali is crime/suspense thriller.
the lead cast is headed by sowcar janaki and supported by noted drama personalities.
conceived and directed by leo prabhu,
the story is about the investigator probing the murder at a party thrown out by a rich dowager played by sowcar janaki, in her palatial bungalow(its actuaaly a small hosue-but as per story its a bungalow),
the party attended by 14 guests, but the identity of only 13 is known,
so the detective investigates the guests one by one,in the meantime many past things of sowcar's life is shown in flash back.

how the detectives catches the mysterious 14 th guest is shown brilliantly in a neat screenplay.
sowcar janaki performed exceptionally well.
the serial was shown on tuesday(if i remember correctly)7 in the evening.

SVS is a family man with a wife and son and gets into unwanted trouble by his antics and gets out safely using good humor and native(naive)intelligence.

kutty padmini made debut as wife of sekar and supporting cast were from his dram troupe.

each episode is a separate story and full of fun and entertainment.
vanna kolangal remained in the minds of tv viers for along time,
and its popularity is known by the fact that , when in 1993 sun tv started , they re telecast the serial with impressive TRPs.

its nam kudumbam in 1989/1990 in thurday nights in doordarshan 2 channel.
in between sekar did a handful of serials , like thevai oru maapilai.

when nam kudumbam was telecast the chennai boys fell madly for the young brindha(studiying in a city college at the time), we even started a rasigar mandram for her.

humlog and buniyaat wer telcast for a long time and were popular all over india, i used to see with my parents, but dont know hindi so ,i dont recall stories,
but bunniyaat i think, is about a family's travails in partition era.

also couple of comedy ones like he jo hai zindagi(swaroop sampath-satish shah , rakesh bedi serial)
and ek do theen chaar( 4 boys from 4 corners of india ) having fun and adventure)

hindi serials were far more superior to tamil ones , either in content or techniques,
though tamil serials caught them in content wise with the entry of greta filmakers like KB into TV, its only SUN tv's effort in mid 90s that put tamil TV on par with the hindi counterparts in techniques.

the success of anna kolangal promted many drama producers venturing into tv serials with YG mahendra, mouli, kathadi ramamurthy etc, coming with their own.
the doordarshan owned by government , so they wanted to give all prospective producers a chance to earn in the new medium. so they created this 13 week time span for a tele serial, that is a serial can run for 13 weekly epiodes(for three months).
this was initially difficult, but with the increase in slots in weekdays and sundays, enabled many to come with many serials.

so by mid 1985 we have 10 serilas in weekdays and a couple more in weekends.

YG mahendra produced some brilliant serials(often remakes of his dramas), unlike sekar, his serials were serious ones with humour interspersed in between.
one brilliant work is "silandhi valai-in which he plays the dual role of a poor textile shop salesman and ahardened criminal,
the former with a family to support suffers for the misdeeds of the latter,

i still remember the title song with only a guitar instrument,

silandhi valai, silandhi valai
sandharbam silarai maatti vaikkum
valai thaan silandhi valai,
adhil samarthyam kondu
meendu varum kalai than sirandha kalai....

another drma stalwart mouli tried his hand in tv serials by remaking one of his masterpiece FLIGHT 172, the most popular by any standard, considering the fact that its DVD release in 2006 met a success on par with tamil movie blockbusters.

its the story of a group of people's experienc3e in chennai airport, after the delay of the presidigious madras-bombay flight 172.
the passengers spend time together inthe airport lounge andinclude people of all walks of life , like a madhawaram party(headed by mouli-getting a chance to perform in a bombay sabha),
a busy businessman, an actress, a english professor and even a murderer escaping law.

the naive, and good hearted mouli and his party meddling with the co passengers and getting rebuff.
one of his accociate payyalu(a look alike of muthu kkalai or vadivelu of earlier time) evoked enough laughter by his looks.

the way mouli translates payalu' words in english is simply awesome,
the way he pronounces stomach ache as styomachachey is simply superb.

following sekar,YGM ,mouli another dramtist kaathadi ramamurthy entered serial scene with his own products, his were light hearted and down to earth comedies, and i remember a couple like,
"aiyo amma appappa"-in which he plays a carefree youth with no ambitions who takes whatever comes i his ways.
in one episode he goes for the ' ponnu pakkara ceremony" of his lover, since he is an orphan he arranges for fathers to act as his own, with everyone sending a father to help kaathadi ramu, so at the time of 'ponnu pathing " there is half a dozen appas, with the broker point them to the FIl as'ivargal ellam ramuvin appakkal"-we laughed about it for a long time

the second serial is "dinesh-ganesh" with kaathadi as dinesh and delhi ganesh as ganesh-,
both are friends and neighbors caught in the "traumatic"middle class life.

as a chance to escape the middle class boredom , both families get a chance to spend the summer vacation in a ooty bungalow.

the families make such hype and hoopola on their journey to ooty, not knowing that they are going to spend the summer in a 'haunted house'.
the thrilling(funny , of course)experiences of the families of dinesh and ganesh in the bungalow haunted by the ' white dressed ghost'.
that was a hilarious and entertaining serial.

for diwali 1985, the chennai doordarshan produced a drama- a two hour long one- called " en veedu, en kanavan, en kuzhandhai", with aachi manorama donning the lead role, as a middle-aged childless brahmin lady.
her pair is noted dramatist kambar jayaraman.
the drama is the best drama produced by DD ad was telecast millions of time.

manorama, though childless, devotes completly for the service of her husband's brothers and sisters.
and finally gets conceiving, as a gift from god for her selfless nature.

she also went on to act two more serials , like
andhapuram- a histroical drama set in middle age tamil kingdoms caught up in power struggle, with manorama as the queen-mother.

the second one in "kaatu patti chathiram" as a loud mouthed tea shop owner, who solves all problems in the highway transit village of the same name.

but for me , her best role in Tv is 2002- sun TV produced, and suhasini directed "anbulla snehithi"-in which manorama plays a old iyengar lady and a aunt /old memebr of ladies only iyengar family caught between past and present.
that serial also had brilliant performance from , seema, swarnamalya, anu hassan , banuchander, ravi raghavendra, gopi.
the serial was one of the shortest produced by sun TV with story ending in 100-120 episodes.
with final episodes being more gripping.

with the famous drama troupes occupying a major spot on tamil TV serial scenario, and with the film fraternity , still waiting to test the new opputunity, a new kind of entrants came and occupied the tamil tv serial production from 1986 to today.

since tv serials needed sponsors( rare to find in chennai with its fledgling media companies) some AD filmamkers like krishnaswami associates and 7th channel(producer of vettaiyadu vilayadu and indrologathil naa.....)came and dominated tamil tv serilas followed by many.

one of the first and finest serial produced by either one of this Ad companies is "nalladhor veenai"-which marked the first turning point in tamil serial as a popular tamil heroine debuted in TV , a trend that continues till today.
but lakshmi was at her peak, if you look into the fact that this serial was aired at the same time samasaram adhu minsaram was making waves at Box office.

the main point about the serial is the advanced storyline, which may be modern even for the current lifestyle of present generation.

nalladhor..... is a story about the family happenings of a religious, orthodox carnatic musician poornam viswanathan.....

but the main protoganist in the story is , his son sarangan, played brilliantly by nizhalgal ravi,he returns home nearly after a deecade after living in western cosmopolitan set up in paris , france.
he left india much against the wishes of his puritanical father.
he even marries a french woman and divorces her.

the family firend of poornam is business man ARS, who is traditionala nd modern, and his beautiful wife lakshmi, they are childless but fond of each other, and very friendly, with the husban gives the wife all freedoms(financial and intellectual).

the twists starts with ravi and lakshmi meet and they find in each other the missing point of their psyche.
their relation starts as friendship but reaches to a unconventional arena,

and i dont know what happened then , as
the probem with DD isthat , they had only one channel and will drop serials if they have some other important program to show like the Asiad 86 or cricket tours in england which take valuable time in evenings.

What a culture?
The serial craze is slowly but surely fading away. The reason why it is 'slowly' fading is because of no real alternative get a ways at the moment. Almost all channels show serials most of the day and hence if viewing has to be, it has to be one or the other serial. Most serials have same actors/actress coming again and again with numerous twists and tears. The plot is also more or less predictable and still the eyeball never shrinks. It has become a habit for many and perhaps even an addiction. Vijay TV which avoided the serial space for long and tried to promote alternatives, somewhere in the middle gave up and decided to use the huge serial space and now it seems to succeed also with serials like maharani and yam irrukka bayam en gaining many eyeballs. And Vijay's this switch, reaffirmed the faith on serials for the addicts, who had started thinking because of the ridicules and etal.

Most serials depict revenge, illicit affairs, multiple wives and even husbands, superstition, gossips and except for the last week of the serial if at all it happens, the rest show the negatives winning. In some snap surveys done in a few colleges in late September, we found out that the college students are not glued to serials, fortunately. And many don't even watch the Tamil space in the box. When the Tamil film is appreciating and accepting novel scripts and more reality, it is amazing that these stale serials still try to dismember the thinking faculties of their eye-ballers.

The most disgusting thing about these serials is the fluent bad mouthing and curses thrown upon by anyone affected and that happens very often. Throwing mud, cursing, crying revenge all even at revered auspicious times flow freely in the idiot box and that perhaps is the culture we are suppose to revere.

இந்த நெடுந்தொடர்கள் மூலம் என்ன சொல்ல வருகிறார்கள் என்பதே புரியாத புதிராக இருக்கிறது. மாமியாரை எப்படி வீட்டை விட்டு அனுப்புவது, நாத்தனாரின் வாழ்க்கையை எப்படி கெடுப்பது, மகனிடம் இருந்து மருமகளை பிரித்து விட்டு இன்னொரு பெண்ணை திருமணம் செய்து வைப்பது எப்படி என்றுதான் இந்த சீரியல்கள் பெரும்பாலும் கவலைப்படுகின்றன.

இன்னொரு கொடுமை, கஸ்தூரி, உறவுகள், இளவரசி, தங்கம், தென்றல், செல்லமே, போன்ற சீரியல்களில் முக்கிய கதாபாத்திரத்திற்கு இரண்டு மனைவி கண்டிப்பாக இருக்கும்.

விகடன் டெலிவிஸ்டாஸ் தயாரிக்கும் சீரியல்களுக்கு மக்கள் மனதில் கொஞ்சம் மரியாதை இருந்தது. தென்றல் சீரியல் மூலம் அந்த பெயர் பாதி கெட்டுப்போனது. மீதியை திருமதி செல்வம் இப்போது கெடுத்துக் கொண்டிருக்கிறது. அடுத்தவள் கணவனை அதுவும் நேற்றுவரை நண்பனாக கருதியவனை எப்படி வலையில் வீழ்த்தலாம் என்று திட்டமிட்டு சாதிக்கிறது ஒரு கதாபாத்திரம் பார்க்கும் போதே எரிச்சலும், அந்த இயக்குநர் மீது ஆத்திரமும் ஏற்படுகிறது பெண்களுக்கு. ஏனெனில் பெண்கள் மத்தியில் செல்வத்திற்கு என்று ஒரு மரியாதை இருந்தது அதை கெடுத்து விட்டார் இயக்குநர் என்றுதான் சொல்ல வேண்டும்.

கதாநாயகன் ராத்திரி குடித்து விட்டு வருகிறானாம், அவனது மனைவியை தூங்கச் செய்து விட்டு தோழி காத்திருக்கிறாளாம். வழக்கமாக மாடர்ன் டிரஸ் போடும் அவள், அன்று மட்டும் சேலையில் இருக்கிறாள். குடித்து விட்டு போதையில் வரும் நாயகன், கண்ணில் அவள் தனது மனைவி போலவே தெரிகிறதாம்.தட்டுத் தடுமாறி இருவரும் பெட்ரூமுக்குள் போகிறார்களாம். போய்க் கொஞ்ச நேரமான பின்னர் அந்தப் பெண் தலைவிரி கோலமாக இருக்கிறாளாம். போதை தெளிந்த நாயகன், என்னவென்று கேட்க, இப்படிப் பண்ணிட்டியே செல்வம் என்று அவள் புலம்புகிறாளாம். சினிமாவில்தானய்யா இப்படியெல்லாம் வரும்.. டிவி சீரியலிலுமா...

இனி சொல்லவே வேண்டாம். கணவர் ராமனாகவே இருந்தாலும் குல குத்துவிளக்குகள் நம்பப்போவதில்லை. எத்தனை தம்பதிகள் பிரிய காரணமாக இருந்து புண்ணியம் கட்டிக்கொண்டாரோ இந்த இயக்குநர். இவரேதான் 9 மணிக்கு ஒளிபரப்பாகும் தென்றல் தொடரையும் இயக்குகிறார். அந்த தொடரில் கேட்கவே வேண்டாம் கணவனை விட்டு ஓடிய மனைவியும், மனைவியை விட்டு ஓடிவந்த கணவரும் இணைந்து குடும்பம் நடத்துகின்றனர். அந்த கண்றாவி வாழ்க்கைக்கு விளக்கம் கொடுத்து அதை நியாயப்படுத்துகிறார் இயக்குநர். தமிழ் கூறும் நல்லுலகம் இதையும் பார்த்துக்கொண்டு இருக்கிறது.

இதுதான் என்றில்லை, கிட்டத்தட்ட எல்லா டிவியிலும் ஒளிபரப்பாகும் சீரியல்களிலும் இப்படித்தான் கன்றாவிக் கட்சிகள் களேபரமாக ஒடிக் கொண்டிருக்கின்றன.

நல்லவேளையாப் போச்சு, தமிழ்நாட்டில் 75 சதவிகித ஊர்களில் அந்த நேரத்தில் கரண்ட் கட் ஆகிவிடுகிறது. தப்பின குடும்பங்கள்!...

சுஜாதாவின் "டாக்டர் நரேந்திரனின் வினோத வழக்கு!". சிறப்பா இருக்கும். பள்ளி வயதில் ஈ.சீ கருப்பு-வெள்ளைதொலைக்காட்சியில் பார்த்து ரசித்தது. சென்னைத் தொலைக்காட்சியிலும், பிறகு இலங்கை ரூபவாஹினி அலைவரிசையிலும் ஒலிபரப்பு செய்யப்பட போதும் ஒரு வாரம் கூட விடாமல் குடும்பத்தோடு அமர்ந்து பார்த்தோம்.

தொலைக்காட்சி நிகழ்ச்சிகளினால் குடும்ப உறவுகளில் சிக்கல்கள் ஏற்படுகிறது என்பது பெரும்பாலானவர்களின் புகார். சின்னத்திரைகளில் ஒளிபரப்பாகும் தொடர்களில் பாலியல் வன்முறைகள், மது அருந்துவது, கள்ளத்தொடர்பு போன்ற காட்சிகள் அதிகம் இடம் பெறுகின்றன. தொலைக்காட்சியில் சித்தரிக்கப்படும் போலியான நிகழ்வுகள், உண்மையான வாழ்வில் பிஞ்சு நெஞ்சங்களில் பசுமரத்து ஆணி போல பதிந்து எதிர்காலமே பாழ்படும் அளவுக்கு நஞ்சு விதைகள் விதைக்கப்படுகினறன. சிறுவர்கள் முதல் பெரியவர்கள் வரை இன்றைக்கு தொலைக்காட்சி பெட்டிகளின் முன் முடங்கிக் கிடக்கின்றனர். இதனால் உடல்பருமன் நீரிழிவு, உயர்ரத்த அழுத்தம் போன்ற நோய்களுக்கு ஆளாகின்றனர். நடனம் என்ற பெயரில் நாகரீகமற்ற நடனஅசைவுகள், அரைகுறை உடைகளை அணிந்து நடனமாடுவது போன்றவை நிகழ்ச்சிகளில் இடம் பெறுகின்றன. ரியாலிட்டிஷோ என்ற பெயரில் பல்வேறு கொடுமையான நிகழ்ச்சிகளும் தொலைக்காட்சிகளில் ஒளிபரப்பாகின்றன. எனவே சமூக சீரழிவுக்கு காரணமாக இருக்கும் தொலைக்காட்சி நிகழ்ச்சிகளுக்கு தணிக்கை அவசியம் என்ற கோரிக்கை இன்றைக்கு வலுவடைந்து வருகிறது.

‘பாருக்குள்’ சீரியல்!




சினிமாவில் தான் பெரும்பாலான படங்களில் ‘பார்’ காட்சிகளை பார்க்க முடிகிறது என்றால், சின்னத்திரை யிலும் அது தொடரத் தொடங்கி விட்டது. சமீபத்தில் அடுத்தடுத்து ஒளிபரப்பாகும் நாதஸ்வரம், தெய்வமகள் சீரியல்களை பார்த்தபோது இரண்டிலுமே பார்களில் கதை மாந்தர்கள் குடித்துக் கொண்டிருந்தார்கள். அதிலும் குறிப்பாக தெய்வமகள் சீரியலில் பாரில் தன் நண்பர்கள் வட்டாரத்துடன் குடித்துக் கொண்டிருக்கும் இளைஞனைத் தேடி கதையின் நாயகியே பாருக்கு வருகிறாள். உடனே அங்கே குடித்துக் கொண்டிருக்கும் ஒரு கேரக்டர், ‘பொம்பளைங்க கூட இப்ப நேரடியா பாருக்கே குடிக்க வரத்தொடங்கிட்டாங்க’ என்று பேசவும் செய்கிறார். பாருக்குள் சீரியல். சீரியலுக்குள் வீடுகள்.

ஆயிரம் எபிசோடுகளாய் அழும் இளவரசி… தென்றல் துளசி….


இன்றைக்கு திரைப்படங்கள் நூறு நாட்கள் ஓடுகிறதோ இல்லையோ டிவி சேனல்களில் சீரியல்கள் 500, 1000 எபிசோடுகளை கடந்து ஒளிபரப்பாகின்றன. டி.ஆர்.பி எனப்படும் மந்திரச்சொல்தான் சீரியலை ஓடவைக்கிறது. 15 ஆண்டுகளுக்கு முன்பு வரை டிவி தொடர்கள் என்றாலே 12 எபிசோடுகள்தான் குறைந்த பட்சம் ஒளிபரப்பானது. தினசரி சீரியல்கள் ஒளிபரப்பாகத் தொடங்கிய உடன் நூறு எபிசோடுகள் பிறகு 500 எபிசோடுகள் என உயர்ந்து இன்றைக்கு ஆயிரம் எபிசோடுகள் கூட அநாயாசமாய் கடக்கின்றன.

தமிழ் தொடர்களில் அதிகரிக்கும் வன்முறையும், கவர்ச்சியும்




திரைப்படங்களை போன்று சின்னத்திரை தொடர்களுக்கும் தணிக்கை வேண்டும் என்ற கோரிக்கை வலுத்து வரும் நேரத்தில் தமிழ் தொடர்களில் வன்முறைகளும், கவர்ச்சியும் அதிகரித்து வருகிறது.


தொடர்களில் பரபரப்பைகூட்ட வேண்டும் என்பதற்காகவும், பார்வையாளர்களை எப்போதும் ஒருவித பதட்டத்துடன் வைத்திருக்க வேண்டும் என்பதற்காகவும் வன்முறை காட்சிகள் அதிகரித்து வருகிறது. உயர்நீதிமன்ற நீதிபதியே வருந்தும் அளவிற்கு அண்ணிகள், மாமியார்கள் என பலரும்... வில்லிகளாக காட்டப்பட்டு வருகிறார்கள்.


கர்ப்பிணி பெண்ணை எப்படி கரு கலைக்க வைப்பது. வலியே தெரியாமல் எப்படி கொலை செய்வது, கொலை செய்ய அடியாட்களை ஏற்பாடு செய்வது எப்படி? கூடவே இருந்து குழிபறிப்பது எப்படி? பாலில் விஷம் கலப்பது எப்படி, சாப்பாட்டில் விஷம் கலந்து கொல்வது எப்படி? கொலை செய்துவிட்டு தடயத்தை மறைப்பது எப்படி என்பது மாதிரியான காட்சிகள் அதிகம் இடம்பெறுகிறது.


டப்பிங் சீரியல்களில் கவர்ச்சிக்கு பஞ்சமே இல்லை. தற்போது ஒளிபரப்பாகி வரும் ஒரு பாம்பு சீரியலில் பாம்பு பெண்ணாக மாறும்போது சினிமாவில் கவர்ச்சி நடிகைகள் அணியும் ஆடைகளை விட குறைவான ஆடைகள் அணிந்து கவர்ச்சி காட்டுகிறது. இவை எல்லாவற்றையும்விட தற்போது பாலியல் பலாத்கார காட்சிகள்கூட தொடர்களில் வர ஆரம்பித்து விட்டது. இதன் அடுத்த கட்டம் என்ன என்பதை காலம்தான் தீர்மானிக்கும்.
