This is not a quiz, but I was just wondering a little bit of history on Ilayaraja's career! I was wondering if he started scoring music for other languages (Telugu, Malayalam, etc.) right when he started his career in Tamil in the late 70s itself, or later?

Bay, since IR was assistant to GKV for something like 100 movies, he was already familiar with all four fields of south (and a good % of movies were made in Madras for all four lang then too).

That made his entry almost immediate into other three languages after the outbreak of annakkiLi. I think he has done a few movies in the other three languages in 77/78 timeframe itself.

That's freakin awesome! This is a classic example for "Ignorance is Bliss" on my part. Because we've been hearing about how music directors of today are global, universal, and versatile in other languages, I had a cloud in my mind all this time that Ilayaraja was only confined to Tamil alone.

But I came across so many Telugu songs of Ilayaraj from the 80s on Youtube, and hence became curious. Gosh, it feels like I have been exposed to a world of news here!

ok, his official website (raaja.com) talks about the telugu version of Badhrakali in 1977, vyAmOham (mal) & a kannada movie in 1978. After these "debut" films, there was a flow of movies in all southie languages.

While he was giving quality stuff in malayalam field (and may be for some kannada films), his max success was with Thamizh / Telugu, where he scored for most top star / top banner movies in his hey days.

I think the Telugu field took a major decision to move all work away from Chennai at some point of time and Raja's work for them got reduced a lot from that point. Obviously because he was not a travel freak even at peak.

Both ilaya nila...payanangal mudivadhillai & ram ram...Hey Ram backed with electronic drum beats.
(ilaya nila... got guitar strumming& synthesizer flute passage , Ram ram.. runs on synthesizer only.)

In both the songs there is instrumental music at the end of the song, which, is rare in raja's music.

you can also give other songs which end with music.

pandianin rajiyathil also comes under this category, but music by karthikraja. in fact, those days we didnt have this information explosion. me and my friends knew that one song was by karthikraja. we didnt know which one. at that time we decided 'pandianin.......' shud be the one as it has this music at the end which is rare in raja's music.

rock n roll of Megam kottatum.... has drumming & bharathanatiyam percussion postlude.

dense chord progression of Swing thottam.....vetri vizha.

paartha vizhi...Guna ends in dramatic tradition music postlude.

adi penne.....has jaladharangam, flute & violin lude.

Tribal drumming postlude of Raman aandalum...

yes, raja is the only md who gave theme music for kamala kamesh, delhi ganesh, disco shanthi, janagaraj, goundamani and senthil etc. (of course it was for their characters). I mean even the small characters they played had elicited extroardinary music since they inspired raja.

Last year has been good for the postludes, I would say :) 'Om Shivoham' had the thundering postlude for the finish. As if to compete with that, 'Alamadankana' has another postludes which blasts you off. And to calm things down, there is a lovely piano postlude for 'acchadicha kasa' from Valmiki. Very unexpected postlude which is in totally contrast to the song.

i had been to yahoo groups meeting yday in chennai and to my surprise it was a '2009 special'. it was good and i said to myself,
"raja has started catering to the newgen, it seems. ketta udane pidikkadhu. ketka ketka thaan pidikkum pola iruku."

haha- that was on a lighter vein. but really enjoyed them and resolved to hear other new albums also which i have missed.

Bhagyadevatha and Prem Kahani were two of the best, outside of 'Naan Kadavul' and 'Pazhassiraja'. You then have an outstanding 'Valmiki' to check out. Then 'Suryakanthi', 'Om Shanthi'. Followed by 'Madhiya Chennai' and 'Kannukulle'. Not to forget the very pleasant 'Paa'. And if you have read Raj's earlier post, you will rush to hear 'Jaganmohini'.

when it is hyped enough in the media, i do give it a ear. in fact, i have original paa cd with me (sounds childish, isnt it?).

i have become a lay listener nowadays. gone are the days, when we used to search every nook and corner in t.nagar for telugu movie casettes of raja like varasudochadu.

have you listened to 'pachi pala'. its a rehash of annakili song 'muthu samba pacharisi kutha thaan venum', sung by susheela.

oru rehash songukaaga oor oora alanja kalam adhu. ippo adhuve vandhu kaadhula vizhundha thaan undu.

so i listened to paa, naan kadavul and pazhasiraja. others, should give them a try.

I can't think of any on the top of my head - the first name that comes to mind without a solo is sigappu rOjAkkaL and it had KH-SJ & MV-SJ doing two duets...
