Song: iLamaiyin ninaivugaL
Film: Selvaakku
Music: Chandrabose
Singers: Vani Jairam, P.Jayachandran
Lyrics: One of (M.A.Kaja, Na.Kamarasan, Pirasoodan, Karunanidhi)
Year: 1986
Nice love duet by Chandrabose who never disappointed his fans when it came to delivering nice melodies. Wish he had had more opportunity to make music for films with love stories. All those masala films and low-budget comedies did not quite do justice to Chandrabose's talents. VJ and PJ, a combination of voices that is loved by so many fans, render another song so sweetly. Today's pick captures the essence of the non-IR soundwaves of the 1980s Tamil film music.
Thanks to sk for sending the song.

Song: uyarmigu piRaviyil
Film: Savithiri
Music: Papanasam Sivan, Kamaaldas Gupta & M.Rajagopala Sharma
Lyrics: Papanasam Sivan
Singer: Shanta Apte
Year: 1941
http://raretfm.mayyam.com/stream/pow07/uyarmigu.rm
Today we will go back nearly seventy years to visit the songs from the film Savithiri. The film was produced by Madurai based Rayal Talkie Distributors at New Theater Studios in Calcutta. The film was directed by Y.V.Rao, a pioneer in filmmaking. He also played the role of Sathyavan. Tall and handsome Y.V.Rao, born in Andhra Pradesh, became an actor on Telugu stage and then an actor in silent films made in Mumbai and Chennai. Soon he started to direct silent films in Bangalore. After gaining popularity as a director in Bangalore Y.V.Rao got to direct the first Kannada talkie Sati Sulochana(1934).
Y.V.Rao directed several films in Tamil, Telugu and Kannada. One of the Tamil films titled Chinthamani(1937) which was a huge hit made M.K.Thyagaraja Bhagavathar a superstar. Rao introduced the Kannada singer/actor K.Aswathamma in Chinthamani as the leading lady and soon she became very famous among Tamil film audience. Y.V.Rao is the father of actress Lakshmi. Lakshmi's mother Rukmini was his second wife. Take a look at the picture of Y.V.Rao and you will know where Lakshmi got her facial bones from. But she got her smile from her mother. More about Rukmini at another time.
Y.V.Rao having broken all the linguistic barriers himself by working in Hindi, Kannada, Tamil and Telugu industries made a bold move to hire Marathi actor Shanta Apte to play the title role in his Tamil film Savithiri. Shanta Apte already a famous a singer/actor in Marathi and Hindi films accepted the offer eventhough she did not know Tamil. But she was determined to learn the language. She spent one year learning Tamil before the shooting began. Shanta spoke all her lines herself and sang all her songs herself, all of it like a native-born.
Y.V.Rao also made another daring choice of making M.S.Subbulakshmi play a male role (Naradar) in the film. On a side note, few years earlier K.B.Sundarambal played the male role of Nandanar in the Tamil film Nandanar(1934) and a few years later P.A.Periyanayaki played Naradar in the Tamil film Rukmangadan(1946).
Some of the songs by M.S.Subbulakshmi for Savithiri are quite popular, but Shanta's songs and Y.V.Rao's songs are not that easily available. So, we will highlight Shanta Apte and Y.V.Rao today in our thread. Shanta sang many solos in the film but Y.V.Rao only sang two duets, both with Shanta. (Note: I have made the assumption that Y.V.Rao sang for himself too, because playback was not in vogue in 1941. Please correct me if the male voice belongs to someone else.) (Correction: Voice belongs to Rajagopala Sharma)
Savithiri did not become a popular film. That may be the reason why Shanta was not again seen in Tamil but she continued to be busy in Marathi and Hindi. Y.V.Rao continued to direct films for the next few years and seems to have retired from films towards the end of the 1940s or early 50s, when a major change in trend took over the Tamil fim industry with the entry of reformist and activist writers and actors. It is a bit sad that when you read about Tamil film history from the 30s, 40s and 50s, Y.V.Rao is generally not highlighted, sometimes not even mentioned.
The two songs featured today are during the happy times in the lives of Sathyavan and Savithiri, which is the first half of the story. annaibUmi is a beautiful melody that makes a nice love song. uyarmigu expresses the joy of a woman in love.
Part of the information in this post was obtained from various reliable sources on the internet. Thanks to The Hindu, Randor Guy and the like.

Thanks Neel ! :) I was wondering whether you would ever go to the 40s and 50s ! :) Can't blame you. Being a youngster 40s and 50s are puraadhana kaalam for you!
There was no 'playback' singing those days. The voice is probably that of Rao.
Marathi is also known as panchadhraavidam(if I remember correctly), close to Dravidian languages. Apte singing well is no surprise. But, Lata Mangeshkar did not do that well ! :)

rajraj,
You are welcome. I am fascinated by the music of those decades and enjoy reading and learning the history of Tamil films and music. The 40s and 50s indeed appear like puraadhana kaalam. To me it is mainly because of the sound recording/reproduction technology of the time. Not because of the songs. Starting the 60s the technology got much better. But I am still fascinated by the music and films from the 30s, 40s and 50s. Though the general belief is that the 30s and 40s were classical music era, a song like annaibUmi that is such a light melody breaks the myth and makes you realize that composers like Papanasam Sivan, S.Rajeswar Rao, S.M.Subbiah Naidu, R.Sudarsanam, etc. are the original creators of what we later called light music in Tamil film music (Do we still have light music in TFM in 2009? That is a whole different topic for discussion.). In the future I will try to feature more songs from the early decades of TFM.
madhu, you are welcome. Glad you enjoyed the songs.

We will round off the week with two more songs from Savithiri. I feel that Shanta Apte's dedication to her profession and Y.V.Rao's contribution to Tamil films deserve an extended appreciation.
"vAnOnggiya" is another nice lovely duet by M.Rajagopala Sharma and Shanta Apte. This is when Sathyavan and Savithiri are living in the forest. The song is mainly about the beauty of nature.
The solo "athO thEvi" is when Yama takes Sathyavan's life. Savithiri travels to Yamalokam (during the long interlude), knocks on Yama's door and fights to get her husband's life back.

Today's pick is a tribute to Nagesh. Ehtir Neechal directed by K.Balachandar starred Nagesh in the lead.
Nagesh was a consummate comedian. The modualtion and timing of his dialog delivery, the perfectly timed and funny body movements, and facial expressions... he never acted, his whole being transformed into the character he played. He was just as good in character roles. Such a gift to Tamil films he was. Thank you Nagesh Sir! You are leaving this earth happier than you found it.

Song: sinthai aRinthu vAdi
Film: Sri Valli

Singer: P.A.Periyanayaki
Lyrics: Papanasam Sivan & Rajagopal Iyer

Happy Thai Poosam!
This week will be Thai Poosam specials.
Sri Valli directed by A.V.Meiyappan and A.T.Krishnasamy starred T.R.Mahalingam, Kumari Rukmini, Baby Kamala, T.R.Ramachandran, N.S.Krishnan, T.A.Madhuram and others. T.R.Mahalingam played Murugan, Rukmini played teenage Valli and Baby Kamala played little girl Valli.
T.R.Mahalingam who was only in his early twenties had already acted in a few films but Sri Valli turned him into one of the top stars. An awesome singer with a big voice TRM fit well into the trend of the time and was a popular star for a few years that followed. I already wrote about TRM some time ago and am providing a link to that post at the bottom.
Rukmini who had already acted as Baby Rukmini in some films was introduced in Sri Valli as Kumari Rukmini. Very slim and lively Rukmini must have been in her mid to late teens when she acted in this film. Just like most other female actors of the time she played her part very casually and it is a joy to watch her. The film has several songs. This is one of the early films in which playback was used. P.A.Periyanaki, a famous carnatic singer and actor, sang playback for Rukmini. Today's pick is when Valli is forbidden to see Murugan by her father and is kept under house arrest. The song is occasionally performed in Carnatic music concerts and Bharatanatyam recitals. However, today's version is the original composition, the original execution and the original rendition of sinthai aRinthu vAdi.
About the female stars of the 1940s and 1930s being casual... it is my observation that it was a time when the female actors simply expressed what the character required, sang and acted. There was no effort made to appear cute, sexy, showy or overly theatrical. But, stars like T.R.Rajakumari and Madhuri Devi were exceptions to this casualness. These ladies had an agenda... it was to seduce the men in the audience... with their suggestive facial expressions, body movements and attire.
Rukmini's mother Nungampakkam Janaki was a danseuse and a small time film actor. She realized a big dream of success through her daughter. However, Rukmini for some reason did not act in very many films especially in the lead. By the time Maniyosai(1963) came Rukmini, not even 40, had graduated into the mother of Muthuraman and Kalyankumar.
Few years after Sri Valli Rukmini married Y.V.Rao(whom we read about two weeks ago) and their daughter is actress Lakshmi. Starting with the first generation Janaki who had little success in films to second generation Rukmini who became very popular among Tamil film audience of the 1940s and then to the bright and extremely talented third generation Lakshmi who is still a successful actor in all southern languages and who has also left her mark in Hindi, it was a graph that was growing only in the upward direction. Lakshmi's daughter Aishwarya started off with great success in Tamil films but had some trouble later. Regardless she is holding on to a place in the industry. This four generation of ladies is truly a success story in the history of Tamil talkie.
The film credits T.M.Rajagopala Sharma and R.Sudarsanam for music and it credits Papanasam Sivan and Rajagopal Iyer for the songs. We know that Papanasam Sivan is a composer and not just a lyricist. Hence I have credited all four of them for music.
Papanasam Sivan and Rajagopal Iyer are brothers. Rajagopal Iyer's daughter is V.N.Janaki who was the wife of M.G.R. and was a film actress in the late 1940s and early 50s.
Sri Valli also popularized Baby Kamala as one of the dancing stars of Tamil cinema.

rajraj,
You are welcome.
What were the sources of music those days? How commom were radios and record players? I know that radios had to be registered and an annual fee had to be paid to the government. It certainly was a fancy item if it wasn't a luxury item. Records were quite expensive for the middle class to afford even in the 70s. Not all fifty(so to speak) songs from a film will be released on records. That would require several records. So, even if you buy those expensive records unless you go to the movies you will completely miss out on many songs, correct?

Neel,
Radio was a luxury those days. We had to pay Rs15 a year for the license( if my memory serves right). A 'cheap' radio was selling for Rs300. If you wanted more selective bands you spent about Rs 600. Cheap or not it was expensive for most families. There was only AIR( All India Radio) with two stations in Madras and one in Trichy. They did not play cinema music a lot. We listened to Radio Ceylon on short wave.
Same was true about record players. There was no record player in the 30 and 40s. We had what was known as a 'Gramaphone' with a horn that you see in His Master's Voice. The energy to drive the turntable was stored in a 'spring' that had to be cranked periodically. Also you had to change the needle every few plates, as those were called. The sound box or pick up was very heavy. Remember 'plate-ai thiruppi podu' ! :) There were only 78 RPM plates which were easily breakable unlike later vinyl records. The gramaphone and plates were expensive and affordable only by the well to do. My uncle had one in our native village. We used to beg him to play the plates ( plate podunga ! ) His prized possession was a stack of 78 rpm plates in brown or blue sleeves. He dutifully cleaned the plates with kerosene. I wanted to bring the gramaphone my uncle had and the record player from my home. Both seem to have disappeared. If ever I find a gramaphone I will buy it for any price as an antique. Fond memories! :)
I don't think they released all songs in a movie in plates, just selected popular pieces. Radio and gramaphone were the only sources of music unless you went to the same movie often. There were touring talkies (theatre in a tent) where you could stand outside the talkies and listen to the songs without paying for the ticket. I used to do that for one movie-'avan', a remake of the Hindi movie 'aah'.
( If you want an appreciation for a 300 rupee radio, a district level government officer was paid a little more than Rs 300 a month those days! )

Film: Sri Valli

Singer: T.R.Mahalingam
Lyrics: Papanasam Sivan & Rajagopal Iyer
Year: 1945
Happy Thai Poosam!
Today's pick is a beautiful thillana from Sri Valli. After trying to win the heart of Valli by singing the amazing kAyAtha kAnagaththE and many other methods that fail, Murugan takes the form of an old man and befriends Valli. The old man comes to Valli's house and entertains her and her family and friends by singing this thillana. Rukmini dances while T.R.Mahalingam sings. Look at the picture. Isn't TRM the cutest thing!
Thai Poosam is a special day for Murugan. We already sang a praise of him yesterday. Today's pick is in praise of Lord Shiva. Legend has it that on the Poosam Natchathiram of the month of Thai, Shiva(Nataraja) came to his golden stage, the city of Chidambaram, and performed his Ananda Tandavam. It doesn't get any better than this. Lord Muruga singing about Shiva's Ananda Tandavam. This song encapsulates Thai Poosam.

Song: varuvAn vadivElan
Film: Varuvan Vadivelan
Music: M.S.Viswanathan
Singer: Vani Jairam
Lyrics: ?
Year: 1978
Bhakti films are always about miracles happening in people's lives through faith. Varuvan Vadivelan was one such film and was a big hit. Come to think of it there were many Bhakti films that were big hits in the 70s. Thirumalai Thenkumari, Annai Velankanni, Deivam, Devi Sri Karumari Amman, Vellikkizhamai Viratham, Thiruvarul, Swami Ayyappan, etc. But I can think of only one in the 80s, Thai Mookambikai. Can't think of any starting the 90s. Hmmm... have people stopped believing in miracles?
Varuvan Vadivelan had good songs and a huge cast. Today's pick was picturized on Jayachitra.

Song: nAn unai ninaikkAtha
Film: Paavai Vilakku
Music: K.V.Mahadevan
Singer: P.Susheela
Lyrics: A.Maruthakasi
Year: 1960
Happy Valentine's Day!
Paavai Vilakku directed by K.Somu starred Sivaji Ganesan, Sowcar Janaki, Kumari Kamala, M.N.Rajam, Balaji and others. Story was by Pa.Akilan and dialog by A.P.Nagarajan. Every song in the film is absolutely beautiful. It is one of K.V.Mahadevan's greatest albums.
Sivaji Ganesan is an intellectual who is into reading and writing poetry and literature. An artsy dreamer. He falls in love with one woman after another. Or, women simply fall in love with him one after another. It is like Autograph. A dancer by the name Senkamalam(Kumari Kamala) is one of those women who love him. Today's pick is a dance recital picturized on Kumari Kamala.
If you watch the films of the 30s and 40s, the dance sequences are usually a light version of Bharatanatyam or some light blend of dance forms. There may be two reasons for this. One of those is that the actors had to sing and dance at the same time and if they danced heavily then they will be out of breath and cannot sing, and also the audio recorder cannot catch their voice and the accompanying instruments clearly if their footnotes and ankle bells are too loud. The other reason may be that these actresses were primarily singer/actors and not necessarily dancers and could only perform light movements. But once playback became the standard, the dancing stars had a field day. Especially in the 50s and early 60s so many wonderful dancers were able to show off their talent.
Kumari Kamala, beginning her career as Baby Kamala in the films like Sri Valli(1945) and Naam Iruvar(1947), popularized Bharatanatyam in its purest form among Tamil audience. There were many other dancers during her tenure in Tamil films, but Kamala stands apart. Most of her dances are pure and traditional choreographies without any lightening, mixing or cinematizing. Other dancing stars, through no fault of their own, were often subjected to performing variety entertainment such as Paambaati natanam, Kuravar natanam, Uzhavan natanam, Athivaasi natanam, Gypsy natanam, light version of classical dance forms, etc. But Kamala with her technical brilliance, expressive face and incredible pace gave life to pure Bharatanatyam choreographies. Today's pick is one such dance. Choreography by K.N.Dhandayuthapani Pillai. The dance is performed inside a temple. Kamala dances and Sivaji watches in wonderment. So will you.
There is also another dance by Kamala towards the end of the film. An emotional song "sithaRiya sathanggaigaL pOlE", sung expressively by PS, has Kamala once again performing at an incredible pace with every cell in her body, in two styles of dance - Kathak and Lavani.
Wish Kamala had given us more dances like this. But she did not act in too many films.
And now back to K.V.Mahadevan. The vocal part of the song is only the first two minutes of this over five minutes song. The rest of the song will say everything about KVM. I don't have to.

Song: en thEvanE
Film: Ithu Ivargalin Kathai
Music: V.Kumar
Singer: A.M.Raja
Lyrics: ?
Year: 1976
Disappointed and disillusioned with the film industry (that is what I heard) A.M.Raja had exiled himself from the industry for many years and was hardly seen in TFM during the 70s. V.Kumar apparently gave this song to A.M.Raja to help him start his second innings. And then what happened? I don't know. The film did not do much for V.Kumar either and that is another story. One more story... P.B.Srinivas was hardly seen in TFM once 70s rolled in. What is the story behind his disappearance? I don't know that either. Ithu Ivarkalin Kathai apparently starred Sivachandran and Amudha(who is Amudha?).
Today's pick is a very nice, but sad, song. Audio quality is so-so.

Good to hear AMR, my favourite singer. His first song was ' samsaaram samsaaram sakala dharma saaram'. He was reigning TFM in the 50s with his wife Jikki. He died prematurely slipping from a moving train. As a college student I used to sing a lot of his songs earning the dubious title, 'A.M.Raja of the hostel' ! Of course we are very generous in conferring titles! :) It was my friends' ploy to get me to sing his songs!
Jikki died later of cancer. Sad end for a great singing pair. Reminds me of AMR's song in 'avan' :
minnal pol aagum indha vaazhkkaiye vaan vill polume iLamai aanadheyaam thunbak kadhai unadhe ! :(
I still sing his songs, 'brindhaavanamum nandhakumaaranum yaavarukkum podhu selvam andro' being my favourite.

Song: kAthal kavinjan nAn
Film: Muyalukku Moonu Kaal
Music: Chandrabose
Singers: T.M.Sounderarajan, S.P.Balasubramanyam, Chandrabose, Jency
Lyrics: Vaali
Year: 1979
Let us celebrate the Himalayan achievement of one of our TFM composers with this nice disco song from the 70s. The song sequence is disco at a colorful discotheque, but the song itself is a blend of styles and singers.
Muyalukku Moonu Kaal is a full length comedy film loaded with comedy actors. Surulirajan, Thangavelu, Asokan, V.A.Murthy, V.K.Ramasamy, T.R.Ramachandran, Manorama, M.Saroja, Sachu, and many more.
Today's pick was picturized on Vijaybabu, Sathyapriya, Bhanuchandar and Nisha. A competition between two couples. Obviously it was during the glamor days of Sathyapriya. It was debut film for the handsome hunk Bhanuchandar and the pretty girl Nisha. SPB and Chandrabose sing for Vijaibabu, TMS for Bhanuchandar and Jency for Nisha. This is one of the rare occasions when Jency sang for a composer that is not IR.

Neel Sir
The hindi tunes were copied from the "Bachna Hye hasino" song from Hum Kissi se Kum Nahin..
However as always SPB can make any song sound better..
Chandrabose has done this before in Madhurageetham where he has copied the tune from the famous song "Sapna Mera Toot Gaya" from "Khel Khel Mein"

Very rare and good song.
Most of Rama narayan's films had PS voice in at least one song. Hope I am not wrong.

இன்று தான் இதைப் பார்த்தேன்;இங்கு rm இல் பாடல்கள் கொடுப்பதால் நான் வரு வதில்லை.
நீங்கள் குறிப்பிடும் இந்த வரிகள் முதலில் வந்த இசைத்தட்டில் மட்டும் இருந்தது;

Dear NeelD,
Just when I was searching for my long time wanting song, Vennilavil Kudai pidikkum, to my pleasant surprise, I found it was posted here. Really great and I thank you for the same. This song is from the film Pennai Solli Kutramillai, released in November 1977 along with Annan Oru Koyil, Attukkara Alamelu and other deepavali releases. This film was released at the Odeon theatre (melody now) where I saw the film. This film has memorable solo from Susila and a duet of TMS PSusila - velum mayilum thunaiyaga ingu nalum vazum sathiyam.
Thank you,
Raghavendran
