Congratulations ARR on yet another fabulous achievement!

Unfortunately, a greater score like Delhi 6 will never get such acclaim, as it is not an English movie produced and directed by a UK national or a Hollywood team.

If we need more such repeats, we will have to get a Phirang to make movies or do a 'benami' production ;)

That moment really thumped me nervously. bakku bakkunu irundhuchi. sothapiduvaangalonnu nenaichen. He won the Ist and I was very confident for the IInd Category. While ARR performing for Jai Ho remba smarta sidetrack panna nenachan Wall E performer. ARR was very cool and he won that too..... 2 Oscar kedachadhu the excitement doubled! I was jumping and screaming.


Yesterday there was a program on NDTV "Chennai on cheers" Naresh Iyer was also there but he didnt given a chance.

1. What do you think about ARR's nomination to Oscars : I am really surprised he hasnt won yet.

It was one of those emotional moments for me....Like I was on the first day of my XII exams, before the interview, when i first got my appointment letter........The same feeling was throughout me....I was literally shaking....Tears were automatically coming....There was a huge lump in my throat...I was choked...It was as if I won the Oscar......

We all know this is not his best work...But still his most apt work for a revolutionary small budget movie which has created history at the Oscars.....We feel proud for Rahman and Pookutty....

Being a Chennai guy...I am doubly proud...Thamizhan endru sollada thalai nimirndhu nillada....

Rahman praises God in Tamil after Oscar win

Los Angeles (IANS): "Ellapugazhum Iraivanukee" is what Allah Rakha Rahman or A.R. Rahman said in Tamil after accepting his first Oscar for best original score for "Slumdog Millionaire".

Translated to mean "May all praise be to the almighty", it is a line the music maestro always says after receiving an award.

After thanking God, he turned to his mother, who had accompanied him to the ceremony here.

"There is a dialogue from an old Hindi film - "Mere paas ma hai" - which means I have my mother. My mother is here, I have her blessings. I am glad she could be here," said an overwhelmed Rahman.

Rahman picked up two of the coveted awards for his best original score as also the best original song "Jai ho" from the film with lyrics by Gulzar and Sukhwinder Singh as the lead singer.

Rahman’s team celebrates Oscar win in Chennai

Staff of Rahman’s recording studio and students from Rahman’s school K M Music Conservatory watched the Academy Awards in a film screening theatre from 6am on Monday


Chennai: There was wild celebration at A R Rahman’s AM Studios in Kodambakkam, Chennai, when the musician bagged two Oscars—for best original score and best song—a record for any Indian.

A group of 50 people including S Sivakumar, chief sound engineer of Rahman, Sami Durai, artists’ coordinator for Rahman’s albums, other staff of the recording studio and students from Rahman’s school K M Music Conservatory watched the 81st annual Academy Awards in a film screening theatre in A M Studios from 6am on Monday.

“We are very very happy,” said Sivakumar. “We expected at least one Oscar but we are extremely happy that Rahman sir got two.”
The little group, which watched the awards ceremony together, celebrated by cutting a cake immediately after Rahman was pronounced the winner in original score for Slumdog Millionaire as well as for best song for the Jai Ho number in the movie. They also burst crackers and distributed sweets.

As Chennai celebrates Rahman’s double-win, a felicitation ceremony to be organized on 1 March by Cine Musicians Union in Chennai for his Golden Globe award for best movie score for Slumdog Millionaire would now turn into a bigger event.

“We are very proud of him. As soon as he got the award (Oscars), he praised God. I thank God, too.” said Abu Gabriel, general secretary of Cine Musicians Union. “For his hard-work and talent, he definitely deserves this and more.”

The event would see stars like renowned Carnatic vocalist M. Balamuralikrishna, film director K. Balachander, music composer Ilayaraja and singers Shankar Mahadevan, Hariharan and Daler Mehandi.

“We have invited all musicians from Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Andhra Pradesh, Kerala, and of course, Tamil Nadu,” Gabriel said.
A die-hard fan of Rahman, Harish Venkatraman, who is pursuing his masters in business administration in media and entertainment, is organizing an event in Besant Nagar beach in Chennai this evening.'

“Along with a few friends, I am planning to set up a wishing booth at the beach, where all Rahman fans could write in their wishes and messages to Rahman and we would present this to Rahman personally once he gets back,” says Venkatraman. “We are also planning to have a small procession at the beach and perhaps we’ll sing Jai Ho as we walk along the beach.”

Augustine Paul, who has worked with leading music directors on western chorus works, said: “Rahman is a very good sound engineer by himself. He can beat all the engineers sitting in the room. Even if there is no engineer, he can still finish the recording. He is very fast, is a quick thinker and planner. The good point about him is he hasn’t separated himself from the artistes, doesn’t put on airs and easy to work with.”

“He works on different projects simultaneously and has used the technology to the maximum. He composes from different places at different times but gets the work done at his studio here. If there are any changes to be made, it gets done in two minutes and is okayed, no matter where he is,” Paul added.

G Kannan, who joined as an assistant sound engineer at A M Studios over a year ago, says that in the intial days he used to get quite tense while working with him. “If he gets an idea, it has to be worked upon quick. One has to keep up the pace with him as he works—he is quite fast. But now, I don’t get that tensed.” Sridhar also mentioned that Rahman is “a little strict” when at work but is otherwise “a very casual guy.”

The sound engineers, instrumentalists and other colleagues of Rahman who Mint spoke with were unanimous in saying that Rahman is a “cool guy to work with.” Almost all of them spoke about his humility and said that is one of the characteristics that makes it easy to work with him.

“He is a night bird,” said Murthy. “Rahman brought in a great variety in music. Like, he got in the Arabic style in Tamil songs and his style of blending sounds is beautiful.”

Peters, who appreciates Rahman for giving the instrumentalists a lot of freedom to play, said: “This (Oscars nomination) is well deserved, there is real hard work but the best part is he maintains his level-headedness. He is full of God and music.”

Tsunami survivors pray for A R Rahman


As Slumdog Millionaire eyes the coveted Oscars on February 22, thousands of tsunami victims in this part of Tamil Nadu are praying for music maestro A R Rahman's success, fondly remembering the healing touch he brought about in their lives in the aftermath of the tragedy.

Days after the tsunami attack, Rahman made a rare public appearance in July 2005 at Kottucherrymedu village near Karaikal and spent nearly 10 hours there, enthralling tsunami survivors with his music.

Though no publicity was given to the visit, thousands of tsunami survivors from about 11 fishing hamlets gathered there to listen to him.

When Rahman arrived at the village along with Drums Shivamani and popular singers Hariharan, Karthik and others, about 600 school students gave him a warm welcome by singing patriotic songs composed by him.

A large number of fishermen had gathered with garlands and shawls to present to Rahman.

Later, he performed a two hour open air concert.

Speaking to the media, A M H Nazeem, leader of the opposition in the Puducherry Assembly said he did not believe it when told Rahman was in the area. "When I went there, he was standing in the beach interacting with the survivors. For the performance, there was no stage, no loudspeakers - absolutely nothing," said Nazeem.

Rahman asked the people to bring three boats and kept them upside down, which then became the stage. He had brought all the musical equipment. "Then it was non-stop music for more than four hours," Nazeem said.

Not only did he enthrall the villagers with his music, but also went for a boat ride with them. Accompanied by Nazeem and other fishermen, Rahman ventured into the sea in a fibreglass boat.

While addressing the crowd, Rahman said he had come to the village on his own to bring happiness to the troubled hearts through music. He urged them to forget the sad memories of the tsunami and march ahead with courage and faith towards a bright future.

Today, nearly four years later, people of the 11 hamlets are grateful for his gesture. The news of three Oscar nominations for Slumdog Millionaire has made them extremely happy. "We are all praying that he wins Oscars in all the categories," said Senthil of Kottucherrymedu.

He said the youth of the village planned to put up digital banners in praise of Rahman.

Big B hails Rahman, Pookutty and Gulzar

New Delhi (IANS): Bollywood megastar Amitabh Bachchan has described the Oscar wins for A.R. Rahman, Gulzar and Resul Pookutty for "Slumdog Millionaire" as the "happiest day for Indians and the film industry".

In a message posted on his blog, Amitabh wrote: "My warmest and heartiest congratulations to A.R. Rahman and Resul (Pookutty) for winning recognition in music and sound and to Gulzar for co-assisting Rahman in the lyric category."

It is for the first time in the history of the Academy Awards that three Indians have won the Oscar - considered the penultimate award in global cinema. The film won eight Oscars.

"International recognition for Indian film talent on one of the most well-known and popular forums - this is the happiest day for Indians and the industry," said Amitabh.

Earlier, Amitabh had stoked a controversy by slamming "Slumdog Millionaire" as a film that "projects India as the Third World's dirty underbelly developing nation and causes pain and disgust among nationalists and patriots".

Acceptance Speech - "Original Score"

Before coming, I was excited and terrified. The last time I felt like that was during my marriage. There's a dialogue from a Hindi film called "Mere paas ma hai," which means "I have nothing but I have a mother," so mother's here, her blessings are there with me. I am grateful for her to have come all the way. And I want to thank the Academy for being so kind, all the jury members. I want to thank Sam Schwartz, I/D PR, all the crew of Slumdog, Mr. Gulzar, Raqueeb Alam, Blaaze, my musicians in Chennai and Mumbai. And I want to tell something in Tamil, which says, which I normally say after every award which is... "God is great." Thank you.

‘I’m sensitive to sound’

With an Oscar nomination tucked under his belt, Resul Pookutty talks about “Slumdog Millionaire” and the art of picking and choosing sounds.

Prick up your ears. Random noises draw your attention to the visuals. You hear susurrations of distant traffic, the babble of voices in the streets, the hum of computers, the cacophony of sounds in slums, yelps, roars, ricochets and occasionally frag ments of birdsong.

They form the first coat of the sonic paint job that Resul Pookutty does in “Slumdog Millionaire”. He fuses them with dialogue and an evocative score to fashion a hit-you-in-the-gut track that got him an Oscar nomination for sound mixing. Shortly before he was nominated for the Academy awards, along with Ian Tapp and Richard Pryke, Pookutty won the BAFTA nomination in the best sound category and is one of the five sound-mixing nominees for the Cinema Audio Society (CAS) Award.

On a cloudy afternoon as he sits down for an interview at a Kerala hotel, basking in the glory of the triple nomination, Pookutty is surrounded by a bevy of relatives, his siblings, nephews and nieces. Leaning back in his chair, he cautions the kids, “Don’t make noise. I’m sensitive to sound.”

He recalls challenges in the work for “Slumdog Millionaire”. “Recording the dialogue was not easy with multiple cameras whirring together. I had to re-invent my techniques. I placed a microphone in a hole bored in a computer facing Anil Kapoor.”

He dismisses the barrage of negative publicity against the film. “You are free to like or dislike the film; appreciation is relative! But accusing Danny Boyle of peddling poverty and exploiting child actors from slums is unfair. He was born in a working-class family. I found him caring, responsible and sensitive.”

Pookutty and his peers have re-defined the role of sound designers in Indian cinema. A sound designer is responsible for everything the audience hears — music scores, dialogue, Foleys and sound effects. “Till Bhansali’s “Black” lit up the cinematic firmament, no one in India paid attention to the sound designer,” he observes.

The story of a deaf, mute and blind girl in “Black” saw Pookutty knock together an abstract audio collage in which words dissolved into ever-changing patterns of ambient noise. The sound became a “character” in the narrative. “I thought: what is the sound of nothing? I communicated with hearing-impaired people and gathered how they respond to sound. A hearing-impaired man told me all he hears is a muted hum. That piece of information formed the basis for designing sounds for scenes featuring Rani Mukherji,” Pookutty states. He stripped out the key ambient sounds recorded for the scenes and retained the silences. Ghostly tail-ends of dialogue slipped into a void. “I experimented with novel, complexly textured sounds. I wanted the track to be totally fresh and different,” he recalls.

The less the sound is noticed, as master designer Walter Murch puts it, the more powerful it becomes. “Sound crosses the Berlin Wall of consciousness without alerting the border guards,” Murch adds. It should facilitate “a simultaneous leap of the audience through the membrane of the screen, like that of Alice through the looking-glass, like a dream the audience is having.”

Pookutty’s thoughts ran on a similar track while designing sound for Feroz Abbas Khan’s “Gandhi, My Father”. “A heavy track like that of ‘Ghajini’ would not have suited the Gandhian theme. It would have gone against the philosophy Khan’s film was rooted in. The film remains close to my heart. There are elements in it I identify with.”

He also relates to “Slumdog Millionaire”. “I recognise the teen from the Mumbai slums, the hero. I empathise with the eternal struggler in him. I grew up in a nondescript Kerala village and walked six km to school every day. I had just Rs. 200 in my bank account when I went to Mumbai seeking work as a sound-engineering graduate. I starved at times. I worked day and night to get a toe-hold in the industry,” he remembers.

After the 81st Academy Awards, he will pick and choose sounds for Rajat Kapoor’s “Rectangular Love Story”, Saurabh Shukla’s “Pappu Can’t Dance Sala”, Sharath’s “Rangeen in Love” and Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s upcoming production. - Which composer opted for less films a year vs a.r.rahman worked 4 to 5 films or less or none in a year to make only rich music and make less money?

- Who recognized many unknown musicians, instrumentalists and gave them recognition?
- Who brought together various cherished indian musical geniuses, who thought film music is a bad way to go and get recognized?
- Why always every kind of musician bow their head to a.r.rahman never caring about the money involved?
- You hear all talking heads in the music filed in India. Did they ever popularize any of their talent to reach the world audience or try to go global? If not, who they depend on now?
- Forget the south India. Did anyone from the bollywood who represent India did their best to get indian music to the hollywood ? Don't say ravi shankar, he was choosen because he was a lucky Indian and he didn't do much there? He even had relations with the beatles. Still today he and his generation is playing the same sitar with same style with no ambitions to hit world music, preserving the classical roots and rules, which is agood thing.
- Did anybody from india tried a world music like a.r.rahman did? Chinese, persian, spanish, arabic..etc?
- Why does not any composer in india can't even get closer to his talent?
- Has any compser took a veteran proud singer for almost many decades to to the doors of oscar nomination, like latha mangeshkar for lagaan?

Tracing the musical evolution of Allah Rakha Rahman that has taken him to ever newer heights

CHENNAI: In the summer of 1992, the nation experienced a new sound. Be it ‘chinna china aasai’ or ‘choti si aasha’, the song captured hearts, marked a beginning and introduced a name. Allah Rakha Rahman. A name that became a chant on Monday.

As a four-year-old, Dilip, as Rahman was then known, was seen toying with a harmonium. That was when the composer Sudharshanam Master playfully tossed a towel over the instrument. Undeterred, the boy repeated the tune he had been trying out — to the astonishment of his father R.K. Shekhar. It was the early sign of genius.

Not surprisingly, academics did not figure high on his priorities. His sister Rahane recounts that all his school notebooks remained literally unopened. “Nothing interested him as much as music.”

He lost his father when he was barely 10. “Yes, it was a challenging time. But our mother made sure we did not feel the burden,” says Ms. Rahane, recalling a time that brought the siblings close to one another.

Malayalam music composer M.K. Arjunan was the first to assign Rahman keyboard duties for his 1981 film Ernadu Mannu. Rahman was paid Rs. 50, his first income from the film industry. The keyboard took him to maestro Illayaraja’s studios too.

In the mid and late 1980s, Tamil audiences savoured the Leo Coffee ad which had Rahman’s signature stamped on it. The world of jingles had found its new poster boy.

But he belonged elsewhere. Kollywood was then hunting for a new music director. “Mani Ratnam referred to me a boy named Dilip who was doing a lot of good jingles,” says veteran director K. Balachander, recalling the making of Roja.

“The first song which was recorded was ‘Chinna chinna aasai’.” A tape was sent to him for approval. He listened to it driving his car. He ended up listening to it 15 times over. “I sent a note back to Mani Ratnam saying this was the best song of the decade.”

What followed reads like a long-list of ‘best songs of decades to come’. Be it Prabhu Deva gyrating to ‘Chikku bukku’ in Gentleman, the magnificence of ‘Chandralekha’ in Thiruda Thiruda, the tug-at-your-heartstrings ‘Uyirae’ from Bombay, or the stirring ‘New York nagaram’ from Sillunu Oru Kaadal – any attempt to pick favourites falls flat.

Charmed by his lilting blockbusters, Bollywood did not take long to embrace Rahman.

There was no ‘Kya Karen ya na karen’ dilemma in continuing the journey that began with Rangeela in 1995. From Sukhwinder Singh’s ‘Chaiyya chaiyya’ to ‘Masakkali’ in Dilli 6, his romance with Bollywood continues.

The West first spotted his talent in Bombay Dreams, an Andrew Lloyd Webber production in 2002. From then on, recognition in Hollywood was but a small step.

Rahman rode on the Slumdog Millionaire sensation across the United States picking up several awards in the run-up to the Oscar night.

Taken by SURPRISE: “I never thought in the wildest of my dreams that Indian lyrics can ever win an Oscar,” was how lyricist Gulzar reacted in Mumbai after the Oscar awards were announced.

New Delhi: Lyricist Gulzar, who shared the Oscar for his song “Jai ho” in Slumdog Millionaire with A.R. Rahman, has admitted that he never thought Indian lyrics could win the golden statuette.

It was “beyond my wildest dreams that Indian lyrics can ever win an Oscar. Indian songs never had a place there [in the West] and the credit for this recognition goes to Rahman,” Gulzar told a news channel.The lyricist was profuse in his praise for the composer. “What a team to work with. You see the spirit of a film in his music. It’s a pleasure to work with that man. He is an amazing innovator – the way he innovates the sounds is just amazing.”

Kamal's message for Rahman

The entire Indian film industry has gone ecstatic over the clean sweep of Slumdog Millionaire at the Oscar's today. The celebrities are now coming out with their congratulatory messages and Kamal Haasan is one among the early birds to wish the Mozart of Madras.

The actor had said he felt like he was walking along with A.R. Rahman on stage to collect the award. According to Kamal Haasan, he always found Rahman to be very simple and .


uncomplicated. The actor added that he was proud and happy as an Indian for Rahman's fete

The Ulaganayagan, while talking about the musical genius's humility, recalled an incident during the Marmayogi project. Kamal pointed out that while he was going gaga over a song composition for the film, Rahman was calm and composed.

Kamal said that Oscars is not like Olympics because each entry is judged based on American standards and not on universal standards. "It is good that Indians are doing well and they cannot be ignored at the Oscars anymore", the star added.

Chennai , Feb 23 Noted filmmaker Maniratnam, who introduced A R Rahman to the film industry through&aposRoja&apos, today said he was proud of the music maestro, whose work has been recognised"internationally"after the double Oscar win.

"He is special. Thats all It doesn&apost matter which award he gets. All that matters is that his work had been recognised internationally," Maniratnam said.

"We all should be proud of it and I am especially very proud of him,"the noted director said when asked for his reaction.

Maniratnam approached Rahman to score music for his&aposRoja&aposin 1991 after seeing him performing at an awards ceremony in Chennai .

Since Roja, Rahman has scored music for all the movies directed by Maniratnam and they almost became indispensable for each other.

"I think every victory is good and&aposSlumdog&aposis a brilliant film and hopefully, very soon, an Indian film will make it at the Oscars," Maniratnam said.

Asked whether he was in the race for Oscars, he said:"No".

Thiruda Thiruda, Bombay, Uyire (Dil Se in Hindi), Alaipayuthae (Saathiya), Kannathil Muthamittal, Guru and Aayutha Ezhuthu were some of the super hit movies in which the duo worked.

Today is a red letter day in Trisha抯 life as her biggest icon AR Rahman has won two Oscars. Talking about Rahman, the actress is all smiles and speaks from the location of her Telugu film in Hyderabad.

Trisha told Sify.com: 揑 am not just another fan, but a crazy fan of Rahman. You won抰 believe that sitting alone in my hotel room in Hyderabad, I was watching the Oscars from early morning and I started screaming, jumping and shouting when Rahman won the Oscar, that the hotel staff came and told me that I had to bring down the TV volume as guests were sleeping in adjecent rooms. It was truly embarrassing though I didn抰 really care?

Trisha has been a Rahman fan since school and confesses that it was partly due to him that she entered films and when Enakku 20 Unakku 18 offer came her way, she blindly signed on the dotted line as Rahman was the music director. She also had the privilege of working in Mani Ratnam抯 Ayitha Ezhuthu (Yuva in Hindi ) with Rahman抯 music. "Rahman's contribution to music has been immense and this award is only a mere reflection of what he has been able to contribute to music and to India.

"I had spoken to him not only about this, but about other albums as well. He has always been able to produce something special in every album," Tendulkar said.

Andrew Lloyd Webber Congratulates AR Rahman on Oscar Win

Andrew Lloyd Webber has heaped praise on AR Rahman after winning two Academy Awards for his music in the hit film Slumdog Millionaire on both his official web site and on the Really Useful Group site.

Andrew, who collaborated with AR Rahman on the 2002 smash-hit musical Bombay Dreams, said: "I am absolutely delighted that A R Rahman, one of the world's great composers, has been recognised at the Oscars. I am very proud to have presented his work Bombay Dreams in the theatre."

Rahman picked up the Oscar for best original score before scooping the best song Oscar moments later. The awards took Slumdog's tally to eight for the evening, with Danny Boyle winning the best director Oscar.

Slumdog Millionaire, the rags-to-riches tale of a boy from Mumbai, has dominated the awards season and has seen A R Rahman win a Golden Globe, a BAFTA and The Critics' Choice Award 2009 alongside several other industry accolades.

The Oscar buzz is known all over now, but here's some exciting news for not only ARR fans, but for all his critiques and those who have been ignorant about the Indian music arena.

AR Rahman now ranks No.6 in the All-Time Best-Selling Recording Artists list in the world. The only artists who have sold more albums than him are The Beatles, Michael Jackson, Bing Crosby, Elvis Presley, and DC/C. Considering his age and speed in which he is progressing, it is not impossible for him to become No.1 sooner.



ARR has sold nearly 1/2 billion albums and cassettes so far.

And here's another fact to be proud of-- he is the only film Composer in the list which has 250 evergreen all-time musicians from all over the world.

Oscar award winner A.R. Rahman’s return to his hometown, Chennai, is something that his fans and well wishers are looking forward to. The musician astounded the entire country with two Oscar awards, recently.

There were plans to accord a hero’s welcome to this music director by the A.R. Rahman Fans’ Association and Music Directors’ Association on February 27th. However, due to unforeseen circumstances, Rahman had decided to get back to the city a day before. He will arrive during the early hours of 26th February, probably between 2 and 4am. This means the grand celebrations could be called off.

நான் தொலைக்காட்சி பார்ப்பவனில்லை. ஒரு நாளைக்கு பத்து நிமிசடங்கள் பார்ப்பதே அபூர்வம். பல மாதங்கள் ஒரு நாள் கூட தொலைக்காட்சி பார்க்காமலே கழிந்திருக்கிறது. என் மனஇயல்பிற்கு தொலைக்காட்சியின் முன் அமர்ந்திருப்பது ஏனோ ஒத்துவருவதில்லை.

யாராவது நண்பர்கள் பார்க்கும்படி சிபாரிசு செய்தால் ஒரு சில நிகழ்ச்சியை பார்ப்பேன். செய்திகள் அல்லது என்டிவி அரசியல் விமர்சனங்களை எப்போதாவது பார்ப்பதுண்டு. அது போல எங்காவது வெளியூர்களில் தங்கும் நாட்களில் இரவெல்லாம் அனிமல் பிளானெட், அல்லது நேஷனல் ஷியாகிரபி பார்த்து கொண்டிருப்பேன். மற்றபடி என் தினசரி உலகம் புத்தகம், பயணம், இணையம், சினிமா, நண்பர்கள் வட்டம் என்று சிறியது.

நேற்றுகாலை ஆறுமணிக்கு எல்லாம் எழுந்து டிவியின் முன்னால் போய் உட்கார்ந்த போது வீடே அதிசயமாக பார்த்தது. தொடர்ச்சியாக நான்குமணி நேரம் தொலைக்காட்சி பார்த்தது நேற்று தான். அதுவும் ஆஸ்கார் பரிசளிப்பு விழா என்பதால். அதிலும் குறிப்பாக ரஹ்மான் விருது பெறுவாரா என்ற எதிர்ப்பார்ப்பு தான் முக்கிய காரணம்.

ஏ, ஆர். ரஹ்மானை கடந்த சில மாதங்களுக்கு முன்பு ஒரு இரவு அவரது வீட்டில் சந்தித்திருக்கிறேன். அவருக்கு நெருக்கமான லண்டனை சேர்ந்த நண்பர் ஒருவருடன் சென்றிருந்தேன். மழையோடு கூடிய இரவு. பதினோறு மணியை கடந்திருக்கும். வீட்டின் வரவேற்பறையில் அவர் முதன்முதலாக வாசித்த கீபோர்டை அழகாக கண்ணாடி சட்டம் அணிவித்து பாதுகாத்து வருகிறார். வீடெங்கும் விருதுகள், மெல்லிய குரலில் எதையே ஹம் செய்தபடியே வெள்ளை நிற ஜிப்பா அணிந்தபடியே மிக இயல்பாக அருகில் வந்து பேசினார்.

ரஹ்மானிடம் உள்ளார்ந்த நகைச்சுவை உணர்வு இருக்கிறது. அது அவரது மிக குறைவான பேச்சிலும் கூட தெளிவாக உணர முடிகிறது. அவர் எதையும் உடனே மறுப்பதில்லை, மாறாக அவர் தான் யோசிப்பதாக சொல்கிறார். அது போலவே தனது இசை மற்றும் தான் செய்து கொண்டிருக்கும் வேலைகள் பற்றி அதிகம் விவாதிப்பதுமில்லை.

ஹிந்தி படங்களின் பொதுவான இசைபோக்கு மற்றும் இன்று உலகெங்கும் மாறிவரும் இசை பற்றி பேசிக் கொண்டிருந்தார். அன்றைய உரையாடலில் ஸ்லம் டாக் மில்லியனர் என்ற படத்திற்கு தான் இசையமைத்திருப்பது பற்றி அவராக தெரிவித்தார். அதை காண ஆவலாக இருப்பதாக தெரிவித்தோம்,

அரைமணி நேரம் அந்தச் சந்திப்பு நடைபெற்றிருக்கும். அதற்குள் அவரை காண்பதற்கான காத்திருப்போர் பட்டியல் வெளியே நீண்டு கொண்டே போனது. அவரது உலகம் இரவில் தான் பூரணமாக இயங்கிக் கொண்டிருக்கிறது. மும்பையில் இருந்து மதியம் வந்திறங்கி உறங்கி விட்டு தற்போது தான் எழுந்து இருப்பதாகவும் பின்னிரவில் திரும்பவும் மும்பை போக இருப்பதாகவும் தெரிவித்தார். தொடர்ந்த பயணங்கள் பற்றி உற்சாகமாக பேசினார்

நாங்கள் விடைபெற்று வெளியே வந்த போது மழை விடாமல் பெய்து கொண்டேயிருந்தது. அவர் வீடு உள்ள கோடம்பாக்கத்தின் மிக சிறிய வீதியில் இரண்டு பக்கமும் விதவிதமான கார்கள் நின்று கொண்டிருந்தன. மழைக்குள்ளாகவே ஹிந்தி திரையுலகை சேர்ந்த பிரபல இயக்குனர் ஒருவர் இறங்கி நனைந்தபடியே நின்று கொண்டிருந்தார். ஒரு நிமிசம் அதை காணும் போது பெருமையாக இருந்தது. மொத்த இந்திய சினிமாவை தன் இசையால் வசமாக்கி வைத்திருக்கிறாரே என்று நினைத்தபடியே அங்கிருந்து புறப்பட்டோம்.

அருகில் சென்று ஒரு காபி ஷாப்பில் நீண்ட நேரம் ரஹ்மான் பற்றியே பேசிக் கொண்டிருந்தோம். ரஹ்மானுக்கு லண்டனில் உள்ள இசை ரசிகர்கள் மற்றும் இசையுலக மரியாதைகள் பற்றி நண்பர் நிறைய சொல்லிக் கொண்டிருந்தார். அன்றிரவு நல்லமழை.

வீடு திரும்பும் போது நண்பர் ரஹ்மான் இசையமைத்த ஆடா (Ada) என்ற படத்தின் குறுந்தகட்டினை தந்து கேட்க சொன்னார். விடாத மழையோடு அந்த படத்தின் பத்து பாடல்களையும் இரவெல்லாம் கேட்டுக் கொண்டிருந்தேன் சிறப்பான பாடல்கள் குறிப்பாக Meherbaan என்ற ரஹ்மானின் பாடல் வெகு அற்புதமாக இருந்தது.


மழை வெறித்த விடிகாலையை வேடிக்கை பார்த்தபடியே நானாக காபி போட்டு கையில் எடுத்தபடியே வாசலில் வந்து நின்றபோது வானில் ஒரு விமானம் பறந்து கொண்டிருந்தது. சிறுவனை போல அந்த விமானத்தை பார்த்தபடியே இதில் தான் ரஹ்மான் மும்பை போய்க் கொண்டிருப்பார் என்று நினைத்துக் கொண்டிருந்தேன். எனக்கே சிரிப்பாக வந்தது.

நேற்று ரஹ்மான் ஆஸ்கார் வாங்கிய சந்தோஷத்தை பலரும் என்னோடு பகிர்ந்து கொண்டார்கள். குறிப்பாக திரைத்துறையை சேர்ந்த அவருடன் பணிபுரிந்த நண்பர்கள் பலரும் உற்சாகத்துடன் அவரை பற்றிய நினைவுகளை பேசிக் கொண்டிருந்தார்கள்.

உயிர்மை இதழில் இருந்து மனுஷ்யபுத்திரன் மிகுந்த சந்தோஷத்துடன் ரஹ்மானுக்கு ஆஸ்கார் கிடைத்துள்ளதை பார்த்தீர்களா என்று கேட்டார்.

கொண்டாட்டம் என்பதை நாம் பெரும்பாலும் மறந்தே போய்விட்டோம். பிரச்சனைகள், சச்சரவுகள் சண்டைகள் அக்கபோர்களில் தான் அதிகம் பேர் ஈடுபடுகிறார்கள். நாம் கொண்டாட வேண்டிய நல்ல தருணம் இது என்று சொன்னேன். அவரும் உற்சாகமாக தானும் அப்படியே உணர்வதாக சொன்னார்.

ஆஸ்காரின் 81 வருட சரித்திரத்தில் அந்த மேடையில் ஒலித்த முதல் தமிழ்குரல் ரஹ்மானுடையது. அது என்னை மெய்சிலிர்க்க வைத்துவிட்டது என்றும் சொன்னேன்.

ரஹ்மானை வாழ்த்தும் சிறிய குறிப்பு எழுதி தர முடியுமா உயிர்மையில் வெளியிடலாம் என்று கேட்டார்

காலை பதினோறு மணிக்கு இந்த குறிப்பை அவருக்கு அனுப்பி வைத்தேன்.

இரவு முழுவதும் ரஹ்மானை வாழ்த்தும் நண்பர்களுடன் பேசி சிரித்து கொண்டாடி வீடு திரும்பினேன்.

எல்லாப் புகழும் இறைவனுக்கே என்று ரஹ்மான் ஆஸ்கார் விருதை கையில் வாங்கியபடியே தமிழில் சொல்லிய நிமிசம் என்னை அறியாமல் கண்கள் ததும்ப துவங்கியது. அது ரஹ்மான் வாங்கிய விருது மட்டுமல்ல. இத்தனை வருடங்களாக இந்திய சினிமா கண்டு கொண்டிருந்த கனவை ரஹ்மான் நிறைவேற்றி காட்டியுள்ளார் என்ற உச்ச சந்தோஷத்தின் வெளிப்பாடு.

எண்பத்தியோறு வருட ஆஸ்கார் நிகழ்வில் முதன்முறையாக ஒரு தமிழ்குரல் ஒலித்திருக்கிறது. அதுவும் மிகுந்த தன்னடக்கமான குரல். தமிழ் மக்கள் என்றும் பெருமைபட்டுக் கொள்ள கூடிய நிரந்தர கௌரவத்தை ரஹ்மான் சாதித்து காட்டியிருக்கிறார்.

எவ்வளவு நீண்ட பயணம். எத்தனை நாள் கனவு. விளம்பர படங்களுக்கான இசையமைப்பில் துவங்கி தமிழ் ஹிந்தி என திரையிசையில் சாதனைகள் புரிந்து லண்டன் ட்ரீம்ஸ், வந்தேமாதரம் என்று புதிய இசை உருவாக்கங்களில் தன்னுடைய தனித்துவமான இசைத்திறனை வெளிப்படுத்தி இன்று ஹாலிவுட் திரையுலகின் உயர்ந்த பீடத்தில் ரஹ்மான் விருதுடன் நின்றபோது நம் காலத்தின் நாயகன் இவர் என்று மனது கொண்டாடுகிறது.

1977ல் இருந்து இந்தியா ஆண்டு தோறும் ஆஸ்கார் விருதிற்கு படங்களை அனுப்பியபடியே உள்ளது. அதில் மதர் இந்தியா, சலாம்பாம்பே, லகான் இந்த மூன்று படங்கள் தான் இதுவரை ஆஸ்கார் விருதில் கலந்து கொண்டன. ஆனால் எந்த படமும் விருது பெறவில்லை. தெய்வமகன் துவங்கி நாயகன், ஹேராம், என தமிழ் படங்கள் ஆஸ்கார் பரிசீலனைக்கு சிபாரிசு செய்யப்பட்ட போதும் அவை ஆஸ்கார் விருதின் இறுதி பட்டியலுக்கே வரமுடியவில்லை.

சத்யஜித் ரே , ஷியாம் பெனகல் சேகர் கபூர் என உலக சினிமாவில் விருதுகள் பெற்ற இயக்குனர்களின் படங்கள் கூட ஆஸ்கார் விருதில் கலந்து கொள்ள முடிந்ததில்லை. சத்யஜித்ரேயை கௌரவிக்க சிறப்பு ஆஸ்கார் அளிக்கபட்டது. ஆனால் அதை அவரால் நேரடியாக பெற இயலவில்லை.

ஆனால் ரஹ்மான் ஸ்லம்டாக் மில்லியனர் படத்திற்காக முதன்முறையாக இரண்டு விருதிற்கு சிபாரிசு செய்யப்பட்டு இரண்டையும் வென்றிருக்கிறார். இது அவரது இனிமேல் வரப்போகும் பல வெற்றிகளுக்கான முன் அறிவிப்பு என்று கொள்ளலாம். இன்னொரு வகையில் இந்தியப்படங்களின் மீது உலகின் கவனம் குவிவதற்கு இந்திய விருது திறவுகோலாகி உள்ளது.


சென்னையின் கோடம்பாக்கத்தில் சின்னஞ்சிறு வீதியொன்றில் வசித்தபடியே உலகின் எல்லா உயரங்களையும் தன் தொடர்ந்த உழைப்பால், தனித்துவமான இசைத்திறனின் வழியே அடைய முடியும் என்பதையே ரஹ்மானின் வெற்றி அறிவிக்கிறது. உலக சினிமா அரங்கிற்கு தமிழ், இந்திய சினிமாவை கொண்டு செல்ல விரும்பும் இளைஞர் பலருக்கும் இந்த வெற்றி மிகப்பெரிய உத்வேகத்தையும், நம்பிக்கையும் தந்திருக்கிறது.

இன்று அதிகாலையில் தொலைக்காட்சியின் முன்பு ரஹ்மானுக்கு பரிசு கிடைத்துவிட வேண்டும் என்று நடுங்கும் விரல்களை மறைத்தபடியே இந்திய மக்கள் மனம் நிறைந்து பிரார்த்தனை செய்தார்கள். அது ஒரு திரைப்படத்தில் இசை அமைத்ததிற்கு விருது கிடைக்க போகிறது என்பதற்காக அல்ல. தங்களின் சொந்த அடையாளமாக, நம்பிக்கையாக , சாதனை நட்சத்திரமாக உள்ள ஒருவனை உலகம் அங்கீகாரம் செய்ய வேண்டும் என்ற ஆசையும் பெருங்கனவுமே ஆகும். அந்தக் கனவு இன்று நனவாகி உள்ளது.

ரஹ்மானின் வெற்றியை முன் அறிவிப்பது போல ஆஸ்காரின் சிறந்த சவுண்ட் மிக்சிங்கிற்கான விருது ரசூல் பூக்குட்டிக்கு கிடைத்தது. கேரளாவின் சிறிய கிராமத்தில் பிறந்து பூனா திரைப்படக்கல்லூரியில் பயின்று மும்பை திரையுலகின் முன்னணி ஒலிப்பதிவாளராக பணியாற்றி வரும் ரசூல் பூக்குட்டி ஆஸ்கார் விருதை கையில் வாங்கியபடியே இந்திய மக்களுக்கு நன்றி சொன்னார்.

அவரது கண்களில் இருந்த ஈரம் இந்திய சினிமாவின் இத்தனை ஆண்டுகால ஆதங்கம் என்பதை வெளிப்படுத்தியது. அதிநவீன தொழில்நுட்பங்கள் வளர்த்துவிட்ட சூழலில் இந்திய தொழில் நுட்பகலைஞர் ஒருவர் மும்பையில் அத்தகைய உச்சதொழில்நுட்பங்கள் கிடைக்காமலே ஆகச்சிறந்த ஒலிச்சேர்க்கையை உருவாக்கி காட்டியிருக்கிறார் என்பது பெருமைக்குரிய விஷயம்.

Hindi film director Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra says the movie has mass appeal with cinematic excellence.
"It is not a film that was over-hyped, nor the kind that would be considered Oscar-worthy. It is a film whose time had come. It was a film that broke all the rules and brought something fresh and culturally different to jaded Academy viewers," wrote Shekhar Kapur in his blog.
Though criticised for his initial comments on Slumdog and how it attempted to portray Indian poverty to the West, Amitabh Bachchan was generous with his compliments. "International recognition for Indian film talent on one of the most well-known and popular forums is the happiest day for Indians and the industry," he said in his blog.

SDM have won all the critics awards and that paved the way to win GG, BAFTA & Oscars. We are just in the beginning of the year and lots to come from rest of the world. Kamalji have said very clearly if you pave the camera for few minutes, you will catch the poverty existing in India and it cannot be hidden. Thats the truth and dont crib that the Westerner have come to show it.

Well now coming to Music category & AR's achievement, ITS STUPENDOUS!! Totally 3 nominations and 2 in one category should have undergone lots of thoughts and persuasions. AR was invited by the jury for a formal inquiry with all those western jambavanans. Remember his songs have been sent repeatedly to Oscars from Lagaan till Water (atleast on their records). ஒரு தெலுங்குப் படத்தின் படப்பிடிப்புக்காகப் போன த்ரிஷா, ஹைதராபாதில் ஒரு நடத்திர ஹோட்டலில் (இன்னுமா தங்குமிடத்தை மாத்தலை!!) தங்கியிருந்தாராம்.

வழக்கத்தைவிட அதிகாலையிலேயே விழித்துக் கொண்ட த்ரிஷா, டிவி முன்பு ஆர்வத்துடன் அமர்ந்து கொண்டாராம்.
காரணம், ரஹ்மானுக்கு ஆஸ்கர் கிடைக்கும் என்ற ஆர்வத்தில்.

தொலைக்காட்சிப் பெட்டியின் சத்தத்தை மிக அதிகமாக வைத்துக் கொண்ட த்ரிஷா, மேடையில் ரஹ்மான் பெயர் உச்சரிக்கப்பட்டதும் கட்டிலின் மீது ஏறி நின்று ஊ...ஆ... ஓ என உற்சாகத்தில் கத்த ஆரம்பித்துவிட்டாராம்.

பக்கத்து அறைகளிலிருந்த விருந்தினர்கள் என்னவோ ஏதோவென்று பதறிவிட்டார்களாம். அவர்கள் கொடுத்த புகாரின் அடிப்படையில், வேகமாக த்ரிஷா ரூமுக்கு வந்து கதவைத் தட்டியிருக்கிறார்கள் ஹோட்டல் சிப்பந்திகள்.

காரணத்தைத் தெரிந்து கொண்டவர்கள், 'ஆட்டத்தைக் கொஞ்சம் குறைச்சுக்கங்க அம்மணி...' என அட்வைஸ் பண்ணிவிட்டுப் போனார்கள்.

"ஆனா... அதப் பத்தியெல்லாம் எனக்கு கவலையில்ல. ஏன்னா நான் ஏ.ஆர். ரகுமானின் தீவிர ரசிகை. நான் நடித்த எனக்கு 20 உனக்கு 18, ஆயுத எழுத்து ஆகிய படங்களுக்கு அவர்தான் இசை.

ஏ.ஆர். ரகுமான் இசை அமைக்கிறார் என்று கேள்விப்பட்டதுமே அப்படங்களின் கதையை கூட நான் கேட்கவில்லை. அடுத்த படமான விண்ணைத் தாண்டி வருவாயா படத்துக்கும் அவர்தான் இசை அமைக்கிறார். அந்த படத்தின் பாடல் சி.டி. வெளியீட்டு விழாவை ஆவலுடன் எதிர் பார்க்கிறேன்.

A.R. Rahman almost crashed to death



The whole world was in awe of A.R. Rahman when he poured his heart out at the recently concluded Oscar Awards function. He sung the song that fetched him the Oscar awards and he was given standing ovation for that. But something tragic almost took place before the big day. Rahman was almost crashed to death while rehearing for the performance.

The Oscar-winning musician revealed that he was almost crashed to death when a massive chandelier, covering a portion of the ceiling of the theatre they were rehearsing, collapsed. He said that the block would have fallen on him had he not moved away from the spot.

Rahman said that the incident shaken him though not terrified. He added that he was saved by the good wishes from the people all over the world.

It may be recalled that A.R. Rahman bagged two Oscar Awards for Best Original Score and Best Original Song for his work in the film Slumdog Millionaire. He is the first Indian to win two Oscars.

It was a very good interview...They showed some old jingles of ARR..I had all known collections..But there was that Chola Tea and Vikram in early days dancing to it..... And there was another advt also....

A great interview..Great replies from ARR...But the concluding rendition of Rehna Tu by the musical wizard was on a sour note...May be his vooice is strained...But it was totally off key and he didn't extend the notes also...He sung like a untrained singer(The whole world knows he is a brilliant singer :( ).....Why Rahman?????Why?????
