OK, here is the explanation.


1) Mr. Robinson lives in Los Angeles.
2) The brakeman lives in Omaha.
3) Mr. Jones long ago forgot all the algebra he ever learnt at High School.
4) The passenger with the same name as the brakeman lives in Chicago.
5) The brakeman and one of the passengers, a distinguished mathematical physicist, attend the same church.
6) Smith beat the fireman at billiards.


The passengers (suffixed Mr) are from 3 different locations:
Los Angeles - Mr.Robinson (clue 1)
Omaha - Physicist (clue 2 & 5)
Chicago - The only guy left.. Mr.Jones (he can't be the physicist being poor at algebra). This implies that brakeman's name is Jones (Clue 4)

Smith can't be fireman (clue 6) and he HAS to be the engineer. :)

hehe, it is completely solvable with the given clues alone eventhough there are no direct answers.

For starters, we know that it belongs to early 20th century and hence the year entries begins with 19_ _ . Perhaps except for 8A.

And 15A is a cube but only 2 digits. So it can be either 27 or 64.

16A is (15A - 1) and hence it must either end with 6 or 3. But since 7D is a square and no square number can end with a 3, we can be pretty sure that 15A is 27 :)
