சென்னை: அமரர் எம்ஜிஆரின் நெருங்கிய நண்பரும் பழம்பெரும் நடிகருமான எம்.என்.நம்பியார் இன்று பிற்பகல் மரணமடைந்தார். அவருக்கு வயது 89.

உடல் நலக்குறைவால் சென்னை தனியார் மருத்துவமனையில் அனுமதிக்கப்பட்டிருந்த அவர் உயிர் இன்று பிற்பகல் பிரிந்தது.

கேரள மாநிலம் கண்ணூர் மாவட்டத்தைச் சேர்ந்த மஞ்சேரி நாராயண் நம்பியார் என்ற எம்என் நம்பியார் தனது 13 வயதிலேயே சென்னை நவாப் ராஜமாணிக்கம் குழுவில் சேர்ந்து நாடகங்களில் நடித்தார். 1935-ம் ஆண்டு பக்த ராமதாஸ் என்ற படத்தின் மூலம் தனது திரையுலகப் பிரவேசத்தைத் துவங்கினார்.

கிட்டத்தட்ட 60 ஆண்டுகளுக்கும் மேல் தமிழ் சினிமாவின் தலைசிறந்த நடிகர்களுள் ஒருவராகத் திகழ்ந்தார் நம்பியார். மக்கள் திலகம் அமரர் எம்ஜிஆர், நடிகர் திலகம் சிவாஜி கணேசன் இருவர் படங்களிலுமே நிரந்தர வில்லன் நடிகராக இடம் பெற்றிருந்தவர் நம்பியார். எம்ஜிஆரின் மிக நெருங்கிய நண்பராகவும் திகழ்ந்தார். இவர் நடிக்காத எம்ஜிஆர் படங்களை விரல்விட்டு எண்ணி விடலாம். வில்லனுக்கு வில்லன் என்ற பட்டப் பெயரே இவருக்குண்டு.

வேட்டைக்காரன், ஆயிரத்தில் ஒருவன் மற்றும் எங்க வீட்டுப் பிள்ளையில் எம்ஜிஆரும் நம்பியாரும் புதிய சகாப்தமே படைத்தார்கள்.

எம்ஜிஆருக்கும் தனக்கும் இடையே எந்த மாதிரி நப்பு இருந்தது என்பதை நம்பியாரே ஒருமுறை இப்படிக் குறிப்பிட்டார் ஒரு விருது வழங்கும் விழா மேடையில்:

எனக்கு எம்ஜிஆர் மேல ரொம்பக் கோபம். அவர் இருந்த வரைக்கும் எங்கே போனாலும் எம்ஜிஆர் என்றதும் உடனே மக்கள் நம்பியார் என்றும் சேர்த்தே உச்சரிப்பார்கள். இப்போ அவர் போய்ட்டாரு. மக்கள் என்னை மறந்துட்டாங்க... போகும்போது என்னையும் கூட்டிட்டுப் போயிருக்கலாம் அவர், என்று கூறி மேடையிலேயே கண் கலங்கினார்.

அந்த விழாவில் தலைமை விருந்தினர் கலைஞர் மு.கருணாநிதி என்பது குறிப்பிடத்தக்கது.

எண்பதுகளில், வில்லன் என்ற நிலையிலிருந்து நம்பியாரை குணச்சித்திர நடிகராக மாற்றியவர் இயக்குநர் கே.பாக்யராஜ். கதாநாயகனுக்கு இணையாக நகைச்சுவையும் செண்டிமெண்டும் கலந்து அவர் நடித்த 'தூறல் நின்னு போச்சு', இன்றும் தமிழின் மிகச் சிறந்த படைப்பாகப் பார்க்கப்படுகிறது.

சூப்பர் ஸ்டார் ரஜினியின் பெரும்பாலான படங்களில் முக்கிய வேடத்தில் நடித்துள்ளார் நம்பியார். கடைசியாக ரஜினியுடன் பாபா படத்தில் நடித்தார்.

தமிழ் தவிர, ஜங்கிள் என்ற ஆங்கிலப் படத்திலும், கணவனே கண்கண்ட தெய்வம் படத்தின் இந்திப் பதிப்பிலும் நடித்துள்ள நம்பியார் 1000 படங்களுக்கு மேல் நடித்தவர். தனது 'நம்பியார் நாடக மன்றம்' மூலம் இரு நாடகங்களை பல முறை அரங்கேற்றியுள்ளார்.

திகம்பரசாமியார் எனும் சூப்பர் ஹிட் படத்தில் 11 வேடங்களில் நடித்து சாதனை செய்தவர் நம்பியார் என்பது இன்னமும் பலருக்குத் தெரியாது.

நம்பியார் என்றதும் பலருக்கும் உடனே நினைவுக்கு வருவது சபரிமலை அய்யப்பன்தான். ரஜினிகாந்த் உள்பட தமிழ் சினிமா நடிகர்கள் பலருக்கும் இவர்தான் குருசாமி. தொடர்ந்து 65 ஆண்டுகளாக தொடர்ந்து சபரி மலைக்குச் சென்று வந்தார் நம்பியார் என்பது குறிப்பிடத்தக்கது. வேலன் போன்ற சில தொலைக்காட்சித் தொடர்களிலும் நடித்துள்ளார். திரையில்தான் வில்லனாக நடித்தாரே தவிர, நிஜ வாழ்க்கையில் எந்த தீய பழக்கமும் இல்லாத, கடவுள் பக்தி மிக்க நேர்மையான மனிதாராகவே வாழ்ந்தார் நம்பியார்.

MGR padangalil avar pangalippai marakka mudiyuma !!. Managed to get a glimpse of him in person when he was shooting for that Manoj film in the surrounding areas of Courtallam. Obviously, that is the only film that comes to my mind now when I recollect his last few films.

My favorite one is his performance in thooral ninnu pochu. A role that suits him well.

Perhaps one of the finest character actors of Tamil cinema. It was amazing to see the variation he could bring to villain roles even within the tight conventions set by Tamil cinema. I still think his villainy in Uthama Puthiran is yet to be surpassed by any other actor. And to gauge his versatility one just needs to watch Missiamma. The best parts of the movie are with him in the frame, matching and even managing to out perform Savitri :D.

Since kannann mentioned Uthama Puthiran, I would like to continue. He comes as a 100+ old man in Nenjam Marappadhillai with an awesome make up. He effectively brings out a trembling voice and his mere looks will pass a chill in your spine.

And yes, Missiamma. I always like to watch his performance whenever he plays lighter roles and he did a lot of such roles too.

இரண்டு நிகழ்வுகள் நினைவிற்கு வருகின்றன. 1987-ம் வருடம் ஜல்லிக்கட்டு 100-வது நாள் விழா. அன்றைய தமிழக முதல்வர் எம்.ஜி.ஆர் தலைமை தாங்கி பரிசுகள் வழங்குகிறார். நடிகர் திலகத்திற்கு ஷீல்ட் வழங்கி விட்டு அவர் கன்னத்தில் முத்தம் கொடுக்கிறார் மக்கள் திலகம். அதற்கு முன்பே ஷீல்ட் வாங்கி விட்ட நம்பியார் இதை பார்த்து விட்டு எழுந்து வந்து தன் கன்னத்தை காட்டி முதல்வரிடம் முத்தம் கேட்க, சபரி மலைக்கு செல்வதற்காக மாலை அணிந்திருந்த நம்பியாரின் முகத்தில் இருந்த தாடியை சுட்டி காட்டி எம்.ஜி.ஆர் மாட்டேன் என்று சொல்ல, நம்பியாரை பின்னிலிருந்து நடிகர் திலகம் தள்ளி விட அந்த மூன்று குழந்தைகளின் விளையாட்டை அனைவரும் ரசித்தது நினைவிற்கு வருகிறது.[விடாப்பிடியாக முதல்வரிடமிருந்து முத்தம் பெற்றுக் கொண்டு தான் விலகினார்].

இரண்டாவது நிகழ்வு தனிப்பட்ட சந்திப்பு. மதுரையில் நான் பள்ளி மாணவனாக [2nd or 3rd Std] இருந்த நேரம். ஒரு வழக்கு விஷயமாக மதுரை வந்த நம்பியார் எங்கள் பக்கத்து வீட்டில் குடியிருந்த மாஜிஸ்ட்ரேட் வீட்டிற்கு வந்திருந்தார். இதை கேள்விப்பட்டு அவர்கள் வீட்டிற்கு சென்ற என்னிடம் எந்த கிளாஸ், எந்த பள்ளிக்கூடம் என்றெல்லாம் அன்போடு கேட்டு தெரிந்து கொண்டார். "என்னை பார்த்து உனக்கு பயமாக இல்லையா" என்று (அவருக்கே உரித்தான அந்த குரலில்) கேட்டது ஞாபகம் இருக்கிறது.

அந்த நல்ல மனிதனின் ஆத்மா சாந்தியடைய வேண்டுகிறேன்.

I wanted to say this yesterday. Add to the fact that "Nambiar" has become a word we use day to day conversation. "Ennadaa Nambiyar veelai pannura?" For example. A super villain, a true villathi villain...who later turned out to be a great versatile character actor. Who can forget his "defection" to comedy 80s onwards.

அந்த நல்ல மனிதனின் ஆத்மா சாந்தியடைய வேண்டுகிறேன்.

A recall of the struggles and success of a veteran actor who passed away this week.

Icon of screen villainy: M.N. Nambiar

One of the most successful stars of Tamil cinema and perhaps the only actor who remained at the top for half century and more! His name is synonymous with on-screen villainy. He acted in so many films that even he could not recall them all! The lon g-standing success sat lightly on him and his deep devotion to Lord Ayyappa of Sabarimala kept him on even keel. A bad guy on screen, off-screen he was the opposite. That was M. N. Nambiar, the Tamil movie star and icon of screen villainy who passed away on November 19, at 89.

Perseverance pays

A staunch patriot and devoted nationalist, he began at the bottom of the ladder — a very good place to start, and climbed his way to the top by sweat and sheer perseverance. Old world values perhaps but obviously they do work! Mention must be made of his roles in ‘Dhigambara Samiyar,’ ‘Sarvadhikari,’ ‘Manthirikumari,’ ‘Enga Veettu Pillai,’ ‘Vaelaikari,’ and ‘Arasilankumari.A versatile actor he played a wide range of roles as hero, comedian and villain. He has played the villain in innumerable films of MGR for nearly three decades. A rare feature in cinema!

Manjeri Narayanan Nambiar hailed from Chirakkal, Kerala and due to straitened circumstances of the family could not afford regular schooling. Handsome and intelligent he entered Tamil theatre as a boy and joined the famous ‘Nawab’ Rajamanickam Pillai’s ‘Madurai Devibala Vinoda Sangeetha Sabha,’ a leading ‘Boys’ Company’ of the bygone decades.

Nambiar played many roles (mostly minor) in the hit play of Rajamanickam Pillai, ‘Bhaktha Ramadas.’ As there was more than one Narayanan he came to be known as Nambiar! He took his bow in cinema in a most modest way when ‘Bhaktha Ramadas’ was filmed at the famous Ranjit Studio in Bombay in 1935. Nambiar received a princely salary of Rs.75 for his role in the film, a fortune for him then. When the noted stage actor and later film star K. Sarangapani left the Nawab Rajamanickam Pillai’s troupe Nambiar began to get better roles. As a young man he joined the well known drama troupe of the day, ‘Sakthi Nataka Sabha’ of ‘Sakthi’ Krishnaswamy. Then came the break that would to be the turning point in his career and life ….

S. D. Sundaram wrote the play, ‘Kaviyin Kanavu,’ whose underlying theme was the Indian Freedom Struggle. Nambiar was cast as the dictatorial despot and the play was a roaring hit. M. Somasundaram (‘Jupiter’ Somu), the boss of Jupiter Pictures, was was impressed with the play and employed S.V.Subbaiah (who played the poet) and Nambiar on contract to work for Jupiter. Thus Nambiar came to films after nearly 12 years.

His first film for Jupiter was ‘Vidyapathi’ (1946). Nambiar played a villainous Brahmin and his wife was played by M.S.S. Bhagyam. Dame Destiny had a greater career for Nambiar in her bag!

As contract actor with Jupiter Nambiar was cast in more films during late 1940s. In 1947 he was cast as hero in ‘Kanjan’ In the hit film ‘Rajakumari’ Nambiar played the supporting role as the hero’s do-gooder pal. Though his role was small he attracted attention. Then came another hit ‘Abhimanyu,’ followed by the stunning film in 1949, a watershed in the history of Tamil cinema, ‘Vaelaikari,’ written by C. N. Annadurai and directed by A.S.A.Sami.

Nambiar played two roles in it, as the feudal ‘Shylock-like’ rich man’s son in love with the poor housemaid, and also as lecherous guru (shades of Rasputin again!). Meanwhile the Salem-based movie mogul, T.R. Sundaram, also a hawk-eyed talent scout, called Nambiar. Nambiar joined Modern Theatres on an attractive and remunerative contract, another turning point in his life and first appeared in their cult film, ‘Manthirikumari’ in which he played the king’s Brahmin preceptor, Rajaguru. Nambiar showed his talents and skills in portraying the guru with high ambitions of taking over the kingdom. He became a star with this film and afterwards there was no looking back.
The next hit

Meanwhile another film was under production at the studio, ‘Digambara Samiyar’ (1950). The role involved donning many disguises and Nambiar excelled in it. The film was a hit and Nambiar won laurels as a fine actor. Another Modern Theatres’ hit, ‘Sarvadhikari’ (1951) witnessed Nambiar firmly establishing his stardom. Even though it had stars such as Chittoor V. Nagaiah and MGR, Nambiar dominated the film true to its title! ‘Sarvadhikari’ was a hit and Nambiar’s career-graph fast-curved upwards. He was now a major star of Tamil cinema.

With his increasing fame Sundaram cast him as hero in ‘Kalyani’and B.S. Saroja was his heroine. But the film failed and Nambiar went back to his villain and character roles.

He acted in some Malayalam movies and lately in TV serials too. A staunch and deeply religious Hindu he became an ardent devotee of Lord Ayyappa of Sabarimala. As the Ayyappa cult began to spread he became a guru and initiator to many and came to be hailed as ‘Guruswami.’

He persuaded many in his fraternity to become Ayyappa devotees and visit the shrine in Kerala annually following a rigid code of discipline and self-denial.

Not an easy task for many film folks! Here was a rare man, when comes such another …..!

ஐயப்ப பக்தர் என்பதாலோ என்னவோ? சரியாக இருமுடி கட்டும் கார்த்திகை மாதத்தில் விடைபெற்றுச் சென்று விட்டார் நடிகர் எம்.என்.நம்பியார்' என்கின்றனர் ஐயப்ப பக்தர்கள்.

தனது எழுபது ஆண்டுகால சினிமா வாழ்க்கையில் அறுபத்தைந்து ஆண்டுகளாக சபரிமலைக்குச் சென்றவர் என்பதோடு ரஜினி, அமிதாப்பச்சன், அம்பரிஷ் உள்பட ஐம்பதுக்கும் மேற்பட்ட நடிகர்களை சபரிமலைக்கு மாலை போட வைத்து அழைத்துச் சென்றவர் இந்த `மகா குருசாமி'.

நம்பியாரின் உடலுக்கு அஞ்சலி செலுத்த முன்னாள் முதல்வர் ஜெயலலிதா, வைகோ தொடங்கி பல அரசியல் பிரமுகர்கள், ரஜினி, கமல், மனோரமா என பல்வேறு நடிக - நடிகையர் வந்திருந்த போதிலும், பழம்பெரும் நடிகரான எஸ்.எஸ்.ஆர். செய்த அஞ்சலியில் மட்டும் ஒரு வித்தியாசம் இருந்தது. நம்பியார் உடலுக்கு மாலை வைத்து அஞ்சலி செலுத்திய எஸ்.எஸ்.ஆர்., `பொய்யே சொல்லாத மனுஷன் இப்படிப் பொய் சொல்லிட்டுப் போயிட்டாரே?' என்று கதறியழுதது நம்மை கொஞ்சம் கலங்க வைக்க, அஞ்சலி செலுத்தி விட்டுச் சென்ற எஸ்.எஸ்.ஆரைப் பின்தொடர்ந்து சென்று, `நம்பியார் சொன்ன பொய் என்ன?' என்று நாம் மெதுவாக விசாரித்தோம். நம்மிடம் பேசத் தொடங்கினார் எஸ்.எஸ்.ஆர்.

``திரைப்படங்களில் வில்லனாக நடித்தாலும் நிஜத்தில் நம்பியார் மிகமிக நல்லவர். யாருக்கும் எந்தக் கெடுதலும் நினைக்காதவர். பெண்களை மிகவும் மதிப்பவர். உலகில் ஒவ்வொரு மனிதரிடமும் ஏதாவது ஒரு குறை இருக்கும். ஆனால் குறையே சொல்ல முடியாத மனிதர் நம்பியார். ஏராளமான எம்.ஜி.ஆர். படங்களில் வில்லனாக நடித்திருக்கும் அவர், எம்.ஜி.ஆரைப் பெயர் சொல்லி அழைக்கும் அளவுக்கு அவருக்கு நெருக்கமானவர்'' என்று சொல்லிக் கொண்டே போனார் எஸ்.எஸ்.ஆர்.

``நம்பியார் ஏதோ பொய் சொல்லிவிட்டதாகச் சொன்னீர்களே?'' என்று அவருக்கு ஞாபகப்படுத்தினோம். ``அது பற்றி கடைசியில் சொல்கிறேனே'' என்ற எஸ்.எஸ்.ஆர்., ``அடுத்தவர்களின் உடல்நலத்தில் மிகவும் அக்கறையுள்ளவர் நம்பியார். அவர் முன் யாராவது தொப்பையுடன் நடமாடினால் உடனே சில உடற்பயிற்சிகளைச் சொல்லித் தருவார். என் உடலை கட்டுமஸ்தாக வைத்துக்கொள்ள நம்பியார் சொல்லித்தந்த சில சிறுசிறு உடற்பயிற்சிகளை நான் இன்னும் செய்து வருகிறேன்.

பங்ச்சுவாலிடி என்பது நம்பியாரின் கூடப்பிறந்த பழக்கம். காலை ஏழு மணிக்கு ஷூட்டிங் என்றால் `டாண்' என்று ஏழு மணிக்கு மேக்கப்புடன் இருப்பார். அவருக்குப் பயந்து நாங்களும் நேரத்திற்குச் சென்று விடுவோம்.

திரைப்படத்துறையில் இருந்து முதல்முதலாக எம்.எல்.ஏ. ஆனவன் நான்தான். சிவாஜி, நம்பியார் ஆகியோர் என்னை ராஜு என்றுதான் கூப்பிடுவார்கள். ஒருமுறை நம்பியாருடன் நான் வெளிப்புறப் படப்பிடிப்புக்காகச் சென்றிருந்த போது நம்பியார் என்னிடம், `ராஜு! என் மனதில் பட்ட ஒரு விஷயத்தைச் சொல்கிறேன். நீ தப்பா எடுத்துக் கொள்ளக் கூடாது' என்ற பீடிகையுடன் ஆரம்பித்தார். `சொல்லுங்கள்' என்றேன்.

`வேறு ஒன்றுமில்லை. ஒருவர் எப்போது வேண்டுமானாலும் எம்.எல்.ஏ., எம்.பி. ஆகலாம். ஆனால் ஹீரோவாக இளமைக் காலத்தில் மட்டும்தான் நடிக்க முடியும். நாட்டுக்கு ஒரு எம்.எல்.ஏ. கிடைப்பது சுலபம். ஆனால் திரையுலகிற்கு ஓர் எஸ்.எஸ்.ஆர். கிடைப்பது சுலபமில்லையே?' என்றார். அவர் சொன்னது நூற்றுக்கு நூறு உண்மை. அரசியலில் நுழைந்ததால் என் இளமைக் காலத்தில் பல படங்களில் ஹீரோவாக நடிக்கும் வாய்ப்பை நான் இழந்திருக்கிறேன்.

நம்பியாரிடம் நல்ல நகைச்சுவை உணர்ச்சியும் அடிக்கடி இழையோடும். `கல்யாணி', `திகம்பர சாமியார்', `நல்ல தங்கை' ஆகிய படங்களில் அவர் கதாநாயகனாக நடித்து வந்த நேரம். தயாரிப்பாளர் ஒருவர் நம்பியாரை கதாநாயகனாக வைத்துப் படமெடுக்க கால்ஷீட் வாங்கியிருந்தார். பிறகு என்ன காரணமோ? படத் தயாரிப்பு நின்றுவிட்டது. அந்தப் படத் தயாரிப்பாளரை ஒருமுறை தற்செயலாகச் சந்தித்த நம்பியார், `இவரை நம்பி_யார் படம் பிடிப்பார்கள்? என்ற எண்ணத்தில் படம் எடுக்கும் முடிவைக் கை விட்டுவிட்டீர்களா?' என்று தன் பெயரையே இரண்டாகப் பிரித்து தமாஷ் செய்தார்.

பல படங்களில் போலிச் சாமியாராக நம்பியார் நடித்தாலும் உண்மையில் அவர் அப்பழுக்கில்லாத ஆன்மிகவாதி. அதையும் தாண்டி அண்ணா, எம்.ஜி.ஆர். மற்றும் என்னுடன் நட்புப் பாராட்டி வந்தவர். நான் பகுத்தறிவுவாதியாக இருந்தாலும் ஆன்மிகவாதியான நம்பியாருடன் எனக்கு கடைசி வரை நல்ல நட்பு நீடித்தது. சினிமாவில்தான் அவர் வில்லன். நிஜ வாழ்க்கையில் அவர் ஹீரோ. நம்பியாருக்கு நிகர் இன்னொரு நம்பியார்தான். அவர் ஒரு சகாப்தம்'' என முடிக்கப் போனார் எஸ்.எஸ்.ஆர்.

`நம்பியார் சொன்ன பொய்' பற்றி எஸ்.எஸ்.ஆருக்கு நாம் மீண்டும் நினைவுபடுத்தினோம். அவர், ``ஆம்! கடந்த ஒரு வருடமாக படுத்த படுக்கையாக இருந்த நம்பியாரை மூன்று மாதங்களுக்கு முன் பார்த்து உடல்நலம் விசாரித்தேன். `உடம்பைப் பார்த்துக்குங்க.' என்றதற்கு, `நான் நூறு வருஷம் இருப்பேன்' என்றார் அவர். இப்போ அதைப் பொய்யாக்கிவிட்டுப் போய் விட்டாரே?'' என்று அமைதியானார் எஸ்.எஸ்.ஆர்.

நம்பியாரின் உடலுக்கு அஞ்சலி செலுத்த வந்த திரைத்துறையினர் சிலரிடம் பேசியபோது நம்பியாரைப் பற்றிய சில அரிய தகவல்களை நம்முடன் பகிர்ந்து கொண்டனர் அவர்கள்.

``தசாவதாரம் படத்தில் கமல் பத்து வேடங்களில் நடித்ததை நாம் பெருமையாகப் பேசுகிறோம். ஆனால் திகம்பர சாமியார் (1947) என்ற படத்தில் கதாநாயகனாக நடித்த நம்பியார் அதில் பதினொரு வேடங்களில் கலக்கியிருக்கிறார். தொழில்நுட்ப வளர்ச்சியில்லாத அந்தக் காலகட்டத்தில் அவர் செய்த இந்தச் சாதனையை இதுவரை யாரும் முறியடிக்கவில்லை.

1935-ல் தொடங்கி 2006 வரை தனது எழுபது வருட திரையுலக வாழ்க்கையில் நம்பியார் தமிழ்-302 தெலுங்கு-3 மலையாளம்-14 ஆங்கிலம்-1 என மொத்தம் 320 படங்களில் நடித்திருக்கிறார். அவர் நடித்த முதல் படம் `பக்த ராமதாஸ்' (1935). அதில் அவர் பெற்ற முதல் சம்பளம் நாற்பது ரூபாய். நம்பியார் கடைசியாக நடித்த படம் விஜயகாந்தின் `சுதேசி'.

ஆயிரத்தில் ஒருவன், மந்திரிகுமாரி உத்தமபுத்திரன், எங்க வீட்டுப்பிள்ளை, படகோட்டி, தில்லானா மோகனாம்பாள், குடியிருந்த கோயில், திரிசூலம் போன்ற படங்கள் நம்பியாரின் வில்லத் தனத்துக்கு அக்மார்க் முத்திரைப் படங்கள்'' என்றனர் திரைத்துறையினர்.

கைகளைப் பிசைந்து கொண்டு, இரு கண்களையும் உருட்டியபடி `டேய் சிங்காரம்?' என தன் கையாளை கம்பீரமாக அழைக்கும் அந்த உருவத்தையும் குரலையும் யாரால்தான் மறக்க முடியும்?
