Was doing some research this weekend over DTH services in Chennai.
I am currently on Free to Air only. One of those who patiently waiting for the waves to settle before samudhrasnAnam. The video quality was not doing justice to my TV and got tired of missing cricket, movies in the weekends. FTA channels do sufficient justice to what little TV gets watched in home apart from yours truly.
I have heard nice things about Tata Sky quality and customer service. You need to buy additional channel packages. They show World-Movies , a channel I heard nice things about - which, is not available with any other dealer. Their cricket channel coverage is also reasonably good. But the biggest drawback for me is they don't show MakkaL TV - the Tamil channel I watch the most.
Dish TV's range of channels and price (300ish for the whole range of channels) is quite impressive. He shows MakkaL TV. Their cricket coverage seems reasonable - no extra package business. But I have heard their picture quality is so-so and customer service is poor.
Sun DTH - his bragging about superior picture quality (he tried getting technical on me) was interrupted by an irate customer vexed with terrible customer service.
Guys next door have the SCV set top box. Which gives all the options but I hear those things are on their way out.

Tata Sky - Picture quality is very good. Problem is with the channel packages. Onnu irundhaa innonnu irukkadhu.
Dish TV - Picture quality is so-so. Weak signal during rainy days.
SCV/Hathway - Quite cheap and more channels are available. Picture quality is good too

Hathway - customer service is worst :banghead: Picture Quality is OK .
Tatasky- Picture quality is excellent . customer service is very good. But cost is little bit more but ignorable.
One dis-advantage is Tatasky is no-picture wn it rains heavily  but this problem persists in all dish TV's rite
Sun Dish- Picture quality is good. Cost is less . Customer service is not good.
IMHO, Tatasky is best 8-)

Set top box(Hathway) - This is what i use. Picture quality is too good. No package business. We get around 180+ non-repetitive channels. It includes all the sports channels and the movie channels(World movies etc.). Most of the popular tamil channels come. I am not sure about makkal TV though. Customer service is good.

Tata Sky. Excellent customer service, excellent picture quality.
Initally I was using SCV setup box, during rainy season you wont get proper signal. Their customer serivice is very poor too and their troubleshooting team was :banghead: Once I asked them about the picture quality their solution was switch off and switch on the box!

Tata Sky is excellent. I did not consider other options. . Its a shame they don't telecast Makkal TV  My fav programs in Makkal TV used to be ( I don't watch TV these days) Tamil Pesu Thanga kaasu and the other program hosted by a beautiful Tamizh Ponnu . I think it went by the name Sol Vilayaatu . I wouldn't let anyone switch channels in this time slot . For me she was the epitome of a good, cultured Tamizh ponnu steeped in Tamizh culture and tradition. . PrabhuRam go for Tata Sky if they have plans to include Makkal TV in their package.

I second this. Only problem is the cable operator near your area. We could lose signal because of him.

The sol viLayattu girl is Karthiga (I think).
Daughter of director Agathiyan.
No signs of MakkaL on Tata Sky.

I don't watch TV these days I am learning towards this actually :-)
