that humming and rhythm pattern resemble. this might be an inspired one or just a coincidental one.

humming and rythm might be inspired one or coincidental one ????? I am stumped...
well .. ok dont go too further .. all you have to do is search for reggaeton..
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V5zdwImXOuo
and every single one will have a beat like this...
IT doesnt matter.. What matters is the song and the tune.. beats are secondary....nobody in this tfm can claim that his percussions are original ... after all we live in a cyclic world..

bliss,
the beats are definitely the same ... the interesting thing is reggaeton made its entry only in the early 90's in latin america. In the course of about 10 years it just spread its wings all over. Priyam came out in 1996 and with the lack of internet at that time.. I am not too sure Vidyasagar would have chosen to incorporate the beats 'verbatim'. Even if he did I dont see anything wrong in it...I dont hold that against him, its still a good song..

You ppl are in wrong perception. No use in sharing my opinion. You ppl are making it as an arguement which am not interested in. I never declared that its a RIP. Did i? At first I thought that could be an inspired one, but later i changed that this could be a coincidental one.
Sloshed,
I agree with your last point which is quite true. But coincidence-kum, blatant rip-kum konjam kooda vithyasam theriyamla irukkum????

If I am not mistaken, the same rhythm is also present in arabic music... but with arabian percussion instruments. Perhaps dats the rhythm VS was trying?

Interz,
I dont know why U want to call it coincidence ?? Give ARR some credit ..If You and I can talk about world music.. I am sure he can give us lectures on it.. . He pretty much knows its reggaeton and he wanted to incorporate a reggaeton song in tamil.which is a first in Tamil( priyam song somehow cant be counted as raggaeton ) whats wrong with that ???
What I cant accept is people coming up and saying its a copy...!! its not.. merely taking a beats from some form of music isnt copying... as I said none of the percussions from tfm are original.. they can be innovative for sure... (They all the sounds come out from a drum and a synth..If there is a Def Leppard fan .. would argue otherwise..the percussion of Dep Leppard was distinct and Unique they they came out..!!)
If you read Harris page , ppl already started cribbing that the Anal Mele song beats are similar to Ven Megam from YNM... sooooooo????????? IR gave countless memorable songs in the 80's using the same tabla routine.. would be call that now copying / inspired from his previous songs.. ITS NOT THE BEATS!!!! I think I am going to pretty much take SoftSword stance.. kindly ignore these folks..
Virranjan... I pretty much know whats the diff between conincidence and rip .. and Taxi Taxi song is niether... the makers knew what they were upto...and they did it well ... I am extrememly happy with the output... Call it whatever you want .. please dont call it coincidence .. its really painful to even read that ...

Yes, it is rip, but don't blame Vijay Antony. Though he is the MD of the film, this song is by PV Prasath, the Director of the film
Unakena naan [Film: Kaadhalil Vizhundhen (2007)] <TC>
Composer: PV Prasath (Vijay Antony is the composer of the soundtrack, but not this particular song)
Direct and unabashed lift from Rihanna's 'Unfaithful' from her 2006 album, 'A girl like me'
Listen to Unakena naan | Unfaithful
The rip is shocking to say the least - almost as if Prasath got Rihanna's vocals removed and added a Tamil layer to it. Prasath happens to be the film's director too!

First, I thought its not even close to be called a coincidence. On second hearing, eventhough it sounds similar I feel its a very common microtune. I guess if you play it on piano it might sound similar to Chariots of fire also (?). It is also a common melody in guitar solos I think.. I cant remember any particular song though.
In short... I think it doesnt need an entry :roll:

The tune is "just" an arohana and avarohana (so called in carnatic music, don't know how it's called in english) of four notes which is often used. I think I heard in an ad too. It is very common and I don't think it can be called a lift.

Karthik, Yes i does look similar, especially the first four lines of Dosthu and the rhythm too. But i really don't know whether to call this a coincidence or lifted.
IMHO, Tune of dosthu song is not something very great, a simple tune hummable tune. Do you think this tune really needs inspiration. So this must be coincidence :D

FYI, altavista is the best of mp3 search.
Technology has improved very much இல்லீங்களா. உங்களுக்கு இது மாதிரி் ஏதாவது தெரிஞ்சா சொல்லிட்டுப் போங்க.

there are many proxies in TFM market. both for lyrics and tunes. MDs simply buy tunes from them for flat 5 K or 10K. this is happenning for quite long time. the author says 2 more things
1.shankar (ganes) got accidented becos of he not paying to an proxy, then....
2. Harris is a born MD of that proxy tune source

Well.. I have also worked with leading music directors of south and north. What vivasayi says is true.. I have a grade 8 in piano (read and write western notations), 7 years of carnatic music training. Still every music director has key persons called arrangers who do 80% of the job for a song. ARR has Ranjit Barot, Srinivas, Joshua Sridhar, (I was once), and many more .. Harris Jeyraj is the copy king and he picks his stuff from Jesus calls gospels.. so his songs sense that moodiness in his style. Karthik Raja is more like his father but he knows both western and classical, not as creative as his brother/IR. Vidyasagar use to listen a lot of mediterranian songs, Deva & co on Malaysian, Indonesian songs, ARR on african and Chinese stuff... SA Rajkumar steal his own songs :))

sakaLAKALAKAlaa Vallavar,
Was the writer trying to imply that HJ uses amateur composer's tunes or was he stating HJ got fed up of his hit tunes being used by MD's ( imply ARR) so he decided to be a MD himself?????
And the Muthu song being re engineered from SUN TV music??? Really... the sun theme wasn't great in the first place!

Exactly, these guys are intentionally twisting the facts at the same time being diplomatically true. He was telling that MD's lift tunes from alla kai's and as if its a seperate side note, he would mention that ARR had a lot of guys doing 80% of the work for him. Has any of these so called arrangers claimed ownership of any of ARR's work, more possible because he is such a huge figure and would generate much more interest than saying say somebody like Shankar Ganesh flicked this tune from me.
And his mandavalams gets exposed when he mentions YSR is creative.. :rotfl: ... Dude, you have mentioned the name in the wrong sentence!!!
cleary a case of IR family jingu chakku.. can be dismissed without any afterthought :irked:

Typical HJ inspiration. The opening guitar is pure lift and Hariharan is the coddler again to let loose the inspiration .. For those who couldnt identify it yet here it is
very obvious in the tune and the lyrics.
IN MY DREAMS GOD IS TALKING TO ME - Chorus
nenjukkul peidhidum maamalai - Solo
IN MY DREAMS I AM DOWN ON MY KNEES
Neerukkul mulkidum thaamarai
IN MY DREAMS I AM BEGGING YOU PLEASE
Sattendru maaruthu vaanizhai
LET MY SOUL REST IN PEACE
Pennae un mel pizhai…
The pallavi ends here. An obvious case of effective inspiration.
The list continues :frightened:

There is nuthing wrong by being ispired. There are many songs of IR which have ispired from hindi...but he spins it in such a way that it sounds better than the original..Mundinam is a classic case..
The same was the case of "Taxi Taxi " song.. will it take thousand listens to call it inspired/lift ..NO he completely spins a new song out of regaetton beats..
I dont call HJ as an original .. but he consistently gives better out put than others.. Similarly I question why is that you guyz get heartaches and spent all your time scrutinizing his songs finding seconds to milliseconds inspirations??
all this structure lift concepts are crap... infact all songs in tamil are structure lifts.. one pallavi and two charanams..So???

Athadu ( dubbed in Tamil as Nandhu and in Malayalam as Target): అతడు) is a 2005 Telugu film produced by Jayabheri Kishore and Murali Mohan and directed by Trivikram Srinivas. The movie stars Mahesh Babu, Trisha Krishnan, Sonu Sood and Prakash Raj. The movie soundtrack was scored by Mani Sharma. The film released on August 10, 2005. It became one of the highest grossers in 2005 in Tollywood. The movie was later dubbed into Malayalam with the title "The Target".

Vasanth, no wonder in this... Kangal Irandaal and Chinna Kannan belong to the same raaga Reethigowlai.
The song that stuck my mind on hearing Kangal Irandaal was another IR masterpiece Reethigowlai, viz Thalaiyai Kuniyum Thaamaraiyee . a Raghuvaran film, I guess.

A couple of weeks back I was listening to the radio station tuned by my son on car (FM 96.3 Detroit) and an old song got played.
The tune was exact replica of the following portion of an old TF song :
"நான் தன்னந்தனிக்காட்டு ராஜா
என் தோட்டத்தில் எத்தனை ரோஜா
நான் தீராத விளையாட்டுப்பிள்ளை
என் தொட்டிலில் எத்தனை முல்லை, முல்லை"
(Don't remember the movie's name, a well-known TMS song; also could not get the title of the western song played on radio)

The following pieces of music strongly remind me of the songs/music in Tamil Fill. I've found out the music that sounds similar to the 1st one given below. The second one strongly reminds me of a tamil song/music. Can someone please help me out!

The original would be Johnny theme music (Post No. 7) (http://www.itwofs.com/tamil-yuvan.html) composed by Raaja. Its surpirsing that a Japanese composer has adapted that theme into 'Kikujuro' :)
Mysskin should've known this and would have realised the greatness of Raaja, thats why he chose Raaja as composer for the movie 'Nandalala' Adapted from 'Kikujuro' :D

Do you seriously think Mysskin needs a Kikujiro to realize IR's potential in the background score? Come on, Mysskin is a hardcore IR fan, no IR fan will see somewhere else to relish his scores.

[tscii:4417b79d35]I am also not very sure That’s why I asked it. But I tried to figure out somehow at long last.
Check Bleach (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bleach_manga) a Japanese comic serires with lots of musicals since 2001. The above link is a beautiful adaption of Rock Music in to Japanese stage play released in 2006. * The prelude 0.15-0.27 and chorus (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DMTLeHJhc6A) is clear adaption of WOHE (2003) – Warriors in peace 0-0.23 and so 0.54 58 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AlslcqACjGk&feature=related). The interesting thing is how ARR brilliantly blends rock into a chinese version with Czech orchestra @2.10 whereas bleach have renowned-roxette the look(1989) in female Rukia vocals at 0.34 end part. Bombay Dreams (2002) Salam bombay (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jmnugMwoP1Q&feature=related) has also a similar prelude at a slightly different tempo. ARR has given a desi feel to it!
I am listening to bleach series and in search of the original song (if so any) and this is a absolutely scintillant journey. Guess what happened after doing some brainstorming techniques I ended up singing moho siyaan (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Adb1exWsoSA) (2003-Chinese/gibberish) & oru mugamo (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OZv_ZTlbtoo) (rock – roxette the look) with a slightly different tempo like rukia. Incredible! Now I wonder why HJ(oru mugamo - 2007 or could be earlier due to the delay) have to rehash ditto the same version as roxette the look
I have given clear indication of the year of release of each soundtrack and nothing downright plagiarism. andha cartoona paarthathum enakku oru mild doubt. Thats why I asked. And "my god: what a Saamaan! Sivalaperi pandi in cartoon and rock musical stage play. Thats funny & interesting![/tscii:4417b79d35]

The similarity doesnt stick with the song alone. Here are some more.. The plot of Kaakha Kaakha itself could have been loosely inspired by bleach, the characters...
Bleach Ichiko (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bleach_manga) (anbuchelvan) forces him to take on the duties of defending humans from evil spirits and guiding departed souls to the afterlife
Ichigo is unable to stop Rukia's capture, but with the help of several of his classmates who also possess spiritual abilities and ex-Soul Reaper and captain Kisuke Urahara, he sets off for the Soul Reaper base, located in Soul Society. Once there, Ichigo and company battle against the elites of the Soul Reaper military, and are ultimately successful in halting Rukia's execution.
It is then revealed that Rukia's execution and Ichigo's rescue attempt were both manipulated by Sōsuke Aizen...
Very rarely a human like Ichigo Kurosaki is born who is able to see, interact, or fight with spirits, and others can gain these abilities by exposure to large amounts of spiritual energy, which happens to a number of Ichigo's friends during the course of the series.
Now look at this pic (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Bleach_captains.jpg) Long hair villain, their gang masked with basket,coolers, mugamoodi(I have seen somewhere else) check the group dancers in uyirin uyire @0.53,1.46,3.15 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Adb1exWsoSA) and also check anbuchelvan team (http://www.bleachportal.net/fanart/artwork/1168728900_bleach15.png)
We already had a cartoon song(lover boy) inspiration for "nenjukkul peidhidum" song. The plot of the movie, characters , song picturisation are also clearly inspired from Bleach series which I posted from wiki and other youtube links.

The technique is split the original track(japanese format provided with scoresheet??) and smartly interchange the 2 different charanam (1C/2C & 2C/1C). No interludes in the original HJ added some effects to get his version. Lyrics & slightly reduced tempo is the key! This is what I am trying to explain all this time how the 2 notes similarity can be manipulated....Check it yourself you will hear

There are lots of ending themes. One of the biggest blockster of Tamil Cinema ripped off everthing including soundtrack from the Bleach - Cartoon Series. Whatever they have improvised, presented better the original has to be credited. Title credits says original story and original Music. Cheap & Disgraceful!

Well from the posts I have generated anyone can ascertain the plagaristic search initiated from the musical notes (stageplay) and proceeded slowly to one by one tracks shockingly 4-5 track in sequence of the opening themes (bear this word for timebeing). Most of these Japanese bands (wiki searched..)/tracks are heavy rock & metallic rock cartooned version thats the difficulty to assimilate. To make it concrete (damn even TwTw was demolished) I have exercised further proofs on my blog (www.scalerevolves.blogspot.com) what an atrocious robbery in terms of script, screenplay etc...

Sometime back I posted about hearing a western song on radio, having the melody of
'நான் தன்னந்தனிக்காட்டு ராஜா" without knowing the name of the song etc.
Today my co-worker played that song on her laptop! Asked the name of the song and she said : 'I'm yours' by Jason Mraz.

Original is by arthur smith rather than the shadows. Loads of versions of this instrumental. Listening from this IR's version sounds abit different.

Infact its clear case of inspiration, lifted and reworked for a whole track.

Hi Scale,
While the style of music is similar with some similarity in notes being there as well but i dont think you can call it copied by any stetch of imagination. The IR version prelude sounds different with some typical IR'ish music. This is a brilliantly reworked IRish sounding number but since this particular style of music with the guitar and drums is so unique there will be always similar notes and sound as well. Infact any song based on this style will be hard pressed to have completely different beats or sound since that is a signature sound for this. We can call IR's number a sort of indainized/tamilish reworking of that style of music. But this is no copy. Inspired by that sound to create something more local ,yes. If we call this copy then most of our western/pop based songs will be copy since most of them have beats which are similar to western numbers.

Yup. I understand that the initial piece is heavily inspired but the whole song is abit too far fetched. I thought you were only talking about the initial guitar piece. Its the same as Rahman's hello mr ethirkachi and yuvan's nenjodu kalanthidu, using a initial piece to form a song.

On a similar note I am also checking Injiringo (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G4SXCfM2X9Q) from thenali for a trumpet connection. Except the african heavy beats & chorus the base tune can be said indianized and it always shifts from point to point the picturization also vindicates in that sense. Whereas rum bum is BLUE's written all over exact replica of Guitar boogie on vocal version. to make it crisp and clear 7 8 naatkal & 1'o clock in charanam...looped.
Hulkster,
Hello Mr. Ethirkatchi - Well I dont say that is Indianized. Except the prelude and you can even stretch all the piano parts. Its wholly accepted fact that the tune is original and listen to the Ist interludes show me something like this in rumbum a verse type...
Mannai vaergal pirinthaalum,
Vinnai neelam pirinthaalum,
Kannai manigal pirinthaalum,
Unnai naan piriyillai,
Sangam Tamilai pirinthaalum,
Sattham isaiyai pirinthaalum,

Wondering why Mani showed it in cinema screen... Still this have found a place in everyone lifted list but not rum bum.

Hi Scale,
I have listened to the guitar boogie multiple versions and i still cannot find any direct similarity to the Rum Bum song. Ofcourse traces are there since it is the same genre and style with similar instruments with tRumpet being added in IR version. I think IR has suffciently worked on it to make it a distinct song. In short it is no exact replica as you claim. Even i try to sing the boogie tune with words it does not resemble the IR song at all. I dont know what you are listening to. Ofcourse since it is the Blues genre and is not IR's own there will be simialrity in notes as i acknowledged earlier. But the tune is different and even the preludes and interludes are reworked.
I wonder why Karthick of INETK did not put it on his site if he felt it was a copy. i am sure he must have heard the boogie version since this is a popular genre and very distinct sound.

Of course it is common knowledge that Rumbumbum is inspired by "Rock Around The Clock". And 'rock and roll' has a very typical sound, feel and structure. Its not a note-for-note lift by any means.

No inspiration or copy. This song is based on the genere called Qawwali, a very famous urdu, hindustani music genere. Qawwali's are predominantly sung with dholaks, Tabla and harmonium. Ustad Nusrat Fatheh Ali Khan saab was a great exponent of Qawwali.....

Isn't that the million dollar question? At what point does inspiration, sampling become copying, i.e, what percentage does it have to be to be considered a copy? That particular tune is the highlight and recurring tune in that Britney song, right?

Did anybody checkout the youtube link posted above ? I thought it sounded like the shivaji songs rhythm(sunlight, moonlight), but I did not want to say it because I was not sure. Thought if i mention this now there is a better chance of confirmation.

Kiru,
Yes, I can see similarities... Looks like a case of inspiration. Can't say it's a copy though. We just have to wait for Harris Jayaraj for a note-by-note copy in the near future ;)
The Shanghai Restoration Project is a great track. Quite catchy indeed. Can easily be adapted to our films.

Actually Steven Devassy used to be the pianist for Vidya Saagar..I read somewhere that Vidya Saagar and Stephen Devassy had mutually agreed and had redone the same piece in that song...

'kELadi kaNmaNi' is one of the few copies of IR ('sO gayA' is the original from tEzAb; or it may have an older Hindi original as IR has been inspired from some, the well-known one being 'kanavu kANum vAzhkkai yAvum' of neengaL kEttavai).

LP and IR had an understanding and IR bought the rights for So gaya so the whole family can copy. :)
Then IR, Now Yuva, future Yatheesh.

Guess, if one is 'clever' in masking the 'original' then he is a successful MD. However, I think YSR still has talent, this is just an aberration.

app_eng,
The first line in the two song, keladi' and 'so gaya' are where the similarity ends. 'keladi' then takes a totally different route. The charanams are totally different. The whole feel of both the songs is quite different. The charanams of the Hindi song are quite pedestrian IMHO.
Honestly I cannot see the link between 'oru kal' and 'so gaya'. Maybe both are based on the same scale.
You are right about 'kanavu kaanum' song though. It is a direct copy of 'kasme vaade pyar wafa sub' from a Manoj Kumar movie. Original sung by Manna Dey. The other song which is a direct lift against Raja's name is 'O rabba vesu kunna killi' which is a copy of 'kaike paan banaras wala' from Don in the Telugu film 'Yugandhar'. Incidentally both the Hindi songs had music by Kalyanji Anandji.
While I can understand the Don song copy, the Hindi version being hugely popular and NTR wanting it in his film. (Those were the days when songs were regularly copied from Hindi. Raja was just getting is foothold in the industry and NTR was a big man.) What I still cannot fathom is the 'kasme vade pyar' song coming to Tamil. First, it is a fairly mediocre song. Not like some beauty of Madanmohan or Roshan. Second, it was in Balu Mahendra's film, who is very close to Raja. Third, there was no one involved like NTR or such and Raja was not the beginner as he was during the 'Yugandhar' days. So is it that Raja liked the song so much or Balu Mahendra liked the song so much that they decided to transpose it to Tamil? I am curious because Raja has probably a huge number of songs for such situations and many of them being lot more better than this song. So why copy?
Maybe the mystery will clear some day!!
