A lovely piece of orchestral music leads us into the award for best Original Score. AR Rahman, India's son, is up for the award...

And the winner is AR Rahman for Slumdog Millionaire! He's looking dapper in a black sherwani. Like a good Indian boy, he mentioned his mother and said a few words in his native tongue. India has arrived, ladies and gents. There's no point denying it now!

And an incredible treat, the great AR Rahman is performing live at the Oscars. Wah! Wah! Triple Wah! O Saya is by Rahman himself, and accompanied by a platoon of dancers and drummers. It segues to a Western song and soon comes back to Rahman. This time, it's the song that made the film famous: Jai Ho! And now it's a collaborative effort. East meets West. And it sounds great! The crowd is on its collective feet, applauding. Now, to see how he does in the Best Song category.

And Jai Ho has won the Oscar for Best Song! Two Oscars for India's finest modern musician! What a night to remember. India at the Oscars will never be looked at the same. And a classy, gracious acceptance speech from Mr Rahman. Well deserved, sir. Well deserved. You've made all of India proud! Slumdog, for those keeping count, has collected a staggering six awards already.

A producer called Diplo produced Paper Planes.
Rahman produced the remix which is also on the soundtrack though.

New Delhi, Feb 23 (PTI) Home Minister P Chidambaram today favoured tax exemption to two Oscars bagged by A R Rahman for Slumdog Millionaire.

"If the Oscars carry a cash award, I will recommend to the Finance Minister that it should be exempt from taxation," Chidambaram, who is also former Finance Minister, said here.

Chidambaram was speaking on the occasion of the foundation-laying ceremony of Rajaswa Bhawan, which will house the Central Board of Direct Taxes and Central Board of Excise and Customs, now in North Block.

"As I was about to get on the car, to drive to this place (foundation- laying ceremony of Rajaswa Bhawan), we got this exhilarating news that A R Rahman has won both Oscars for which he was nominated," the Home Minister said.

Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee and a host of revenue department officials were present at the function.

When asked whether such tax exemption would be given, CBDT Chairman S S N Moorthy refused a direct reply, saying this is a policy decision.

Rahman today became the first Indian to win two Oscars for the Best Original Score "Slumdog Millionaire" and its foot-tapping song "Jai Ho". PTI

[tscii:cecfcf42c4]Best & Worst of the Oscars: Hugh Jackmania!

Oh, man, did you see that moment when that guy did that thing? Don't worry, we did. Read on and get the full story of Oscar's best, worst and otherest.

Best Performance: Even with the slightly forced "recession Oscars" conceit, host Hugh Jackmandelivered a completely winning song and dance to open the show that totally made us forget they didn't hire a comedian. Showing off both talent and a sly sense of humor, Jackman nailed it.

Best Lyric From the Opening Song: "I would swim a sea of human excrement."
—Jackman, crooning sweet(?)ly to Kate Winslet...or pitching a new reality series

Worst Transition: From the goofily good opener—the techno Reader representation was more entertaining than the movie—the show bogged down with that somber bunch of Best Supporting Actresses intoning like they were going to banish the winner to the Forbidden Zone with General Zod.

Best Brangelina Quip: Jackman drew our attention to Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie before saying, "I don't actually have a joke for them, I'm just contractually required to mention them five times during the show." (Not bad; it's 25 times for us.)

Best Present: Copresenters Steve Martin and Tina Fey, who've been funny together on TV and film, delivered a hilarious tribute to writers that made us want to see them make another movie together. Or, you know, read something.

Best Reaction: Jolie looked totally charmed by her Kung Fu Panda costar Jack Black, who was onstage presenting with that actress from Friends.

Best Twilight Crossover: Rob Pattinson brought that undead charm of his to the Oscars, where it was familiar to Twihards and everyone who's ever had lunch with a Hollywood agent.

Best On-Air Design: Whoever thought to put Daniel Craig and Sarah Jessica Parker on stage together.

Best Reaction: Seth Rogen and James Franco's half-baked response to the comedies of 2008. Dude, cinematographer Janusz Kaminski was so high!

Joke Least Likely to Reach the Billion People Around the World: Ben Stiller's crazy, bearded Joaquin Phoenix impersonation was funny, but a little inside considering how few people recognize Stiller anyway.

Assault With a Medley Weapon: The top-hat-and- tails number with Beyoncé, Zac Efron and the rest totally summed up the year in movies. And that year was 1936.

Most Likely to Spawn a "Who's in Your Five?" Commercial: The Best Supporting actor nomination five-way was like a presidential debate without all the humor.

Most Heartbreaking: Heath Ledger's family accepting his award.

Biggest Showstopper: Wirewalker Philippe Petit, the absolutely entertaining subject of documentaryMan on Wire, balancing an Oscar on his chin while a billion people watched and wondered if it would fall. But for a man who once spent 45 minutes walking between the Twin Towers, well, that's probably no big deal.

Best Commercial: Coming in just ahead of the one for the website that helps you earn $5K a monthworking at home, the Tom Cruise-Jimmy Kimmel bit was funny like a house on fire.

Best Make-Good Decision: The loud and fast medley crammed full of action and comic book movies, because let's be honest: These were the best things that Hollywood had to offer last year, and The Dark Knight (not to mention Iron Man) got robbed. Take that, Reader.

Worst Make-Good Decision: After that whole medley thing, the movie about the wrinkly old baby beatDark Knight and Iron Man. Obviously, there is no justice…except that meted out by costumed heroes.

Most Enlightened: Slumdog Millionaire composer and songwriter A.R. Rahman ended each of his wins with a thoughtful comment about God or seeking happiness. And you notice that he won more than once, right?

Worst Staging: The decision to move the camera around Queen Latifah during the "In Memoriam" segment made it hard to see who was being remembered. And that's kind of the point.

Best Speeches: There were some terrific speeches, and here are some of our favorite bites:

"I grew up in a place called Alcobendas, where this was not a very realistic dream. And always on the night of the Academy Awards, I stayed up to watch the show and I always felt that this ceremony was a moment of unity for the world because art in any form is and has been and will always be our universal language and we should do everything we can to protect its survival."
—Penélope Cruz, winner for Supporting Actress in Vicki Christina Barcelona

"When I was 13 years old, my beautiful mother and my father moved me from a conservative Mormon home in San Antonio, Texas, to California, and I heard the story of Harvey Milk. And it gave me hope. It gave me the hope to live my life, it gave me the hope to one day live my life openly as who I am and that maybe even I could fall in love and one day get married."
—Dustin Lance Black, winner for Milk screenplay

"All my life I've had a choice of hate and love. I chose love. And I'm here. God bless."
—Composer A.R. Rahman, accepting the award for Best Song

"You commie, homo-loving sons of guns. I did not expect this, and I want it to be very clear that I do know how hard I make it to appreciate me often."
—Sean Penn, accepting the Best Actor award for Milk

"I forgot a guy, the guy who choreographed the dance at the end of the film. He's called Longenus, and I forgot him off the credits and I only found out about it two weeks ago. I'm an idiot, and I apologize from the bottom of my heart, Longenus. Thank you so much."
—Danny Boyle, gracious in winning the award for directing Slumdog Millionaire

"Domo arigato, Mr. Roboto."
—Kunio Kato, winner for Best Animated Short

Biggest Beef: OK, we didn't like the way they handed out the acting awards. The soliloquies from five previous winners to the current nominees was full of the kind of simpering, quivering emotion that's best left for the eventual winner's speech. This was overkill.

Second Biggest Beef: The show, which had been moving along a fast, fun clip, totally bogged down in the last half-hour and made all the big awards seem anticlimactic. And nobody wants that, right?

Most Memorable Moment: Complaints aside, we say Hugh Jackman's masterful emceeing was the night's best surprise. But that's just us. What do you say?[/tscii:cecfcf42c4]

good point. i too noticed that all other nominees had orchestral music with a lot of strings, brasses, etc etc. i think most oscar wins in the past were for these kinda music.

@sloshed - it depends on the diktats of the film and its director.
ARR mentioned that Danny wanted a hip kind of music and not too much of orchestration - the whole score was done in 3 weeks which is like 3 days in ARR scale of time. If typical hollywood style of orchestra would have been involved here it would have taken 3 weeks only for rehearsal.

The Billboard Q&A: A.R. Rahman

A.R. Rahman

January 22, 2009 11:20 AM
Before sweeping the 2009 music Oscars, the composer chatted about his "Slumdog Millionaire" score, working with M.I.A. and more.
Cortney Harding, N.Y.

Composer A.R. Rahman might not be a household name in the United States quite yet, but he's one of most well-known musicians in his native India, where his musical scores appear in a host of films every year.

He's well on his way to breaking through in the West, though, with his Golden Globe win for best original score for the film "Slumdog Millionaire," as well as three Oscar nominations. The soundtrack, which features M.I.A. on several songs, was released digitally Nov. 25 and physically Dec. 23 by Interscope.

"O Saya" is one of the two A.R. Rahman tracks nominated for the Best Original Song Oscar

Rahman got his start writing music for Indian TV ads in the early 1990s and switched to film, composing several soundtracks a year. In 2002, Andrew Lloyd Webber commissioned him to write the music for the play "Bombay Dreams," which ran in London's West End. Billboard spoke to Rahman about his Golden Globe victory and plans for the future.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Do you feel your Golden Globe win represents a step forward for Indian music in the U.S.? Do you anticipate more Americans will begin to seek out Indian music?

I think it's probably the first major breakthrough, and it will create a bridge between the audiences. With the film winning so many awards and getting so much attention, I think it will lead to a crossover and more people exploring Indian music.

I also think M.I.A had something to do with it. It was great timing, because her song became such a hit right before the soundtrack was released.

Many people in the States who do know about Indian music think that it is mainly Bollywood-style, up-tempo compositions, when in fact, India has a rich musical diversity. Is it your intention to try to introduce Americans to different genres of Indian music?

The win is such a blessing in disguise. Bollywood music is definitely a big part of Indian music, and can be a great way to introduce people to the sound. But I hope to continue to incorporate other types of Indian music into my work.

Lots of Hollywood scores have a similar, very orchestral sound and feel, but "Slumdog Millionaire" is very poppy. Do you see your victory as a sign that filmmakers want a more modern sound in a score?

The fact that you say the feel of "Slumdog" is different is a great compliment. I felt so good at the [Golden Globes] ceremony because I was there with Peter Gabriel and Sting and Hans Zimmer, all people I respect and admire so much. I think what directors want is good music, not one sort of sound.

Are you planning on releasing your own work, not connected to any film, at some point? How would you release it?

I'm not signed to any label, and I am planning on releasing music on my own label at some point. I don't know when I'll be able to do it, because things are a little busy right now (laughs).

What do you have coming up in 2009?

I have lots of movie soundtracks, including the soundtrack to a film called "The 19th Step." I usually work on a film soundtrack for two years, turning in a song every few months, and that keeps my creative energy high, because I'm constantly rotating projects. The trick is to make sure I don't work too hard and get exhausted. I'm also planning some collaborations with some interesting people, but they are confidential for now.

Read an interview..
he did make this music in his own terms..
DB simply wanted some music replacing some of the filler music he already had - Rahman injected his energy and strongly defended the need for scrapping already composed songs and include new songs he had scored. I wonder what were the original songs and who had composed them. This way he made sure that the film got the score it deserved.

'Slumdog' Coming to DVD This Month

Slumdog Millionaire may have enjoyed its best weekend to date in theaters last weekend -- even after nearly four months in release. And the Academy Award winner's legs are likely to remain steady for several more weeks. That's why analysts were somewhat surprised when Fox announced that Slumdog, whose Oscar wins included best picture, director (Danny Boyle), and adapted screenplay (Simon Beaufoy), would be released on DVD and Blu-ray disc on March 31 -- just four weeks from now. The Blu-ray version, it said, will include a bonus music video. The A.R. Rahman soundtrack won Oscars for best original score and best original song.

Danny Boyle asked to direct next Bond film

London, March 3 (IANS) Danny Boyle, Oscar winning director of 'Slumdog Millionaire', has been asked to direct the next James Bond film.

Bond producer Barbara Broccoli has asked Boyle to direct the 23rd Bond film, reports thesun.co.uk. The other producer Callum McDougal is Boyle's friend and has served as a producer of Boyle's 2002 film 'The Beach'.

A source said: 'Danny is the man of the moment and he is being bombarded with offers from studios. He has been offered the chance to direct the 23rd Bond film by Barbara. The team love his vision and think that it would work perfectly for the new look of Bond. Danny has always insisted he is more interested in the film than the money.

'With Daniel Craig's involvement and the way the films are now structured - with the emphasis on the characters and plot rather than gags and gadgets - it is right up Danny's street. Everyone on the team thinks Danny would be a fantastic addition to the Bond family.'

Snippets from the post...

• While I was on hiatus last week, the biggest mover on the Hot 100 was "Jai Ho," A.R. Rahman's energizing theme from Slumdog Millionaire. The song exploded from No. 100 up to No. 15 in the week just after the song and the movie won their respective Oscars. (This week, it's back down to No. 36.) Digital sales of the song were the primary catalyst for last week's big move, catapulting from about 22,000 in the week leading up to Oscar Sunday, to 130,000 the week after, a nearly sixfold increase. But Top 40 radio jumped on the song also; it ranked 47th among all songs at pop radio last week.

The bad news: most of that airplay is coming from the remix featuring vocals from lead Pussycat Doll (and Idolator punchline) Nicole Scherzinger. Hence, on the Hot 100, the song's full credits read, "Jai Ho! (You Are My Destiny)," by "A.R. Rahman & The Pussycat Dolls featuring Nicole Scherzinger." (Smells like the solo-career-stoking credit "Wham! featuring George Michael" used for "Careless Whisper" back in the day.)

The good news: digital-song buyers have better taste than radio programmers - Rahman's original recording is handily outselling the PCD remix. In the week just after the Oscars, the ratio was nearly four-to-one in favor of Rahman by himself (103,000 downloads, versus 27,000 for the PCD version). This week, the ratio's down to about two-to-one, but Rahman still outsells La Scherz (36,000 to 18,000).

One last, fun tidbit: Best as I can tell-going just by Hot 100 data over the last 50 years - "Jai Ho" is by far the biggest chart beneficiary of an Oscar Best Song win in history. No song has ever risen dozens of spaces up the chart just one week after the ceremony.

Mostly, that has to do with timing. "Jai Ho" is an emerging hit right now, whereas most years, the ultimate award-winner either wasn't a chart hit at all, or it had already topped the charts weeks or even months before the Oscar ceremony (e.g., 1971's "Theme from Shaft," 1978's "Last Dance," 1986's "Take My Breath Away," 1997's "My Heart Will Go On," 2002's "Lose Yourself," among many others). Among the few songs that needed the Oscar boost to fly up the charts, to varying degrees, were such '70s winners as Barbra Streisand's "The Way We Were" and "Evergreen"; the Carpenters' cover of "For All We Know"; Maureen McGovern's "The Morning After"; and Keith Carradine's "I'm Easy." And before "Jai Ho," the Oscar winner with the most visible improvement in the week right after the ceremony was Bruce Springsteen's 1993 winner "Streets of Philadelphia," which crept up a couple of spaces to enter the Top 10 in April 1994, right after the Boss collected his statue. Guys... yen ippadi ellam?? ARR song being danced by Pussycat Dolls can only mean that ARR song has reached (and going to be reached ) by all the US common layman peeps. Pussycat dolls has a GREAT demand among the teenagers. And if the teenagers r enjoying ARR's songs, that can only mean ARR' popularity is STEADY in US.

Why so against Pussycat Dolls all of the sudden?? It is a good thing that Jai Ho has somehow reached to the hands of PCD (A very popular band/artist) and yet u people can still complain. Why?????? When ARR has reached there u people say its not good. Yenpa???

Seriously, the remix is not bad at all. They have done nothing to the song if u havent noticed. The only additional part they did was the motivational song was turned to a love song and a marvelous entering by Nicole during the "Jai Hooo" chant in the song. Whats the issue here then????

I think Western pop/mainstream music needs to be revolutionised more than Western film music. There are already a wide array of innovative composers working on BGMs. I also think symphonic type BGMs are the calling of Hollywood movies, a requirement even. I think where ARR could make his mark is with mainstream album music for different artists.

The remix is not bad, i agree, but it's not great.
I just don't like the whole commercial aspect of it, they've just taken AR's composition and re packaged it to make money.
Have you seen how much product placement there is in the video.

Also, I agree with Maddy in terms of AR revolutionising Hollywood, but breaking the backbone of symphonic type scores had been done by many including Hans Zimmer, who has brought in music from around the world with a modern feel. AR will do something even more different hopefully.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C8QQMk_il0Q

You guys take a look at leave him a piece of your mind in the comments section.

I got this from the ARR Facebook fan page.

Here's what one of the users there commented (to point out the stupidity of his case):

The guy has just gone too far to try to seem valid. He has just altered the other songs to so it sounds similar to SDM. Shows how far pple can go to prove a point. I mean I am sure the academy have recognized the originality of the scores and BGM before awarding Rahman Sir with 2 oscars.

1. Ringa Ringa: Its said in the album and by Rahman that the song is inspired by Chole Ke Peeche, hence he even used the same singers (Alka Yagnik, and Ella Arun) to render the song. So there is no reason to point this out, cause it was a known fact and everyone knew about it even when it was released. ARR did this only because the director wanted some thing like Chole Ke Peeche in the movie (he said this in another interview)

2. O Saya: Please listen to the original song he is mentioning Mas que nada by Jorge Ben Jor- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oCM_VWzSiMo . You will see that the guy who posted the comparison thing definitely altered the song so it seems like its a copy. I guess O-Maria has very little similarity to O-Saya but its all about the notes used…so it can just be a coincidence that they both used similar notes. It doesn’t mean that Rahman Sir copied the song full out.

3. Jai Ho—He did the same for this. Listen to the original Panna Ki Tamanna: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1m6yI4sZvoA . It doesn’t even sound similar, according to my perception and the notes are not even the same.

4. Aaj ki Raat: Ummm, this guy is kinda late on figuring out that the song is not by Rahman originally, its by Shankar Eshaan Loy for Don. And this is stated in the CDs and I think everybody around the world knows it. ARR didn’t try to claim it as his own. And original score mainly is for the BGM in the movie, and how the music is used to elevate the movie experience. Which in SDM the music really played a great role. And for this ARR totally deserved it.

5. Liquid Dance: This comparison is also too far fetched in my opinion.

I mean you can be inspired by certain pieces that may come up in your works cause you have been exposed to that inspired piece so much, but to say that the whole created piece is copied is just unjust. I feel this guy just had too much time on his hands, and needs to listen to music to enjoy and not judge and alter. [/tscii:0a6cef3b0f]

This video is definitely a joke.
That guy has cleverly used the same background beats and rhythm for that another song to prove O saya is a copy. If somebody falls for that, then he has to be the fool of the highest order.

Regarding the other song comparisons, Its a waste of time to be discussing about them. I mean it is so obvious that he has tried to fool around.

Describe your method for scoring a film.
I mostly don't write to specifically defined cues. I just watch the film a couple of times, stop watching it, then write something that comes to my mind from the film. This way, when I try to sync the music, the results are that much more wholesome. You get something extra that you don't get when you're looking at specific points in the timeline. The music is much more organic this way, not jumping cue to cue. It's more about counterpointing and, sometimes, walking hand-in-hand. Most of the time it works out. If you watch the picture and try to have a specific chord change here, a tempo change there, when the director comes back and wants to move picture, you find that you've wasted time. I think this way is more appealing to me and to the people watching the film. Click tracks and following the SMPTE are necessary for some things, but once you have everything in Logic, then afterwards you can edit and make minor changes

ajay, did u see thalaivar's point there - his music serves as a counterpoint and sometimes in line with visuals.......i mean, a "roobaroo" in RDB climax is a mesmeririsng example of counterpoint........this guy and his music is a serious contradiction to people who have "set" thinking.....

On the other hand, ARR is doing quite a few Tamil movies at the moment, more than he's done in a while. Maddy, the language has a lot to do with how the music sounds, you do realise.

He would probably stay in Hollywood for a few months to do the music then come back to Chennai, and work like that, the music is usually done in a couple of months or less.
He doesn't need to compose for hundreds of movies in Hollywood in order to make his mark, this was proven by SDM.

There is so much that can be done in TFM, see how long IR stayed in TFM...
I predict AR will re invent himself and TFM before he goes for a pause or leaves.

I dont think he should move to Hollywood permanently for it is very competitive in terms of
1. I agree with Maddy that he is already a king in India but he cant command that much respect here in the US
2. Music ONLY is not a super-star status it is part of the movie (though gets elevated for the OSCAR type difference)
3. The projects he works on should be a HIT like SDM otherwise, his ernest and futile efforts and hardwork will go waste for no reason

I dont think he should move out of the comfort zone, and should implement the various things like "ownership" of music, copyrights and such which he has been proposing for a long time. At least we can eliminate copy cats and tupid pellow's who shine under somebody else's cause.

to all those people who want him to compose for tamil movies - pls tell me wat is left for ARR to do in tamil movies?? apart from the same mundane 10 situations to compose for a song, will he get anything new??? namakku thalaivar meesic dhaan mukkiyam - adhu enna language-a irundha enna??? hollywood is the unconquered frontier 8-)

I won't agree Maddy. It is not about doing something new all the time. If he stops doing TFM, we wont get songs like Ennaveley, Snehithaney, kanna moochi enada etc., (already a part of me is missing that ARR who makes soothing carnatic melodies, eventhough his gradual evolution to produce something like Dil gira dafatan, Rehna tu is making me forget those regrests). I can give countless examples of his songs which would have come only for TFI, we would certainly miss such peices when he stops composing for TFI. Ideally we would like to have an even mix of all the three industries :D

I think we better change topic before we end up on a heated debate. Please mind this topic is for discussing the music of SDM. I hope we can end the ongoing discussion (partly digression) on the moving to Hollywood and continue our discussion on things related to SDM

No offense to anyone :)

Hindi cinema still comes up with enough challenging projects to make his staying in India worthwhile. Tamil cinema is mostly a wasteland of the same old plots and cliches, but every now and then ARR will come up with an SOK, outside of Mani Ratnam or Shankar films. I hope Gautam Menon can bring out more good Tamil music from ARR.

In Hindi, I'd love to see an Anurag Kashyap-ARR combo.

Indian film industry should change its attitude: Kamal Haasan

Chennai (IANS): Multilingual film actor Kamal Haasan on Thursday slammed the critics who say that Oscar winning film "Slumdog Millionaire" showed India in a bad light.

"I am tired of hearing allegations about 'Slumdog Millionaire' showing India in a bad light instead of rejoicing over the achievement of A.R. Rahman and Resul Pookutty," Kamal said at the audio launch Wednesday of "Pasanga" a children's film being by Sasi Kumar.

"Director Danny Boyle shot on location and did not create a set to depict Mumbai's underbelly. Further, foreigners see the slums of India's financial capital first and then its skyscrapers."
"If good films are made and showcased, bad films will fade away naturally," Kamal added.

According to the matinee idol, the showbiz's prevalent fetish for "success formulae" on pure commercial terms was leading the audience astray and in turn resulting in mediocre movies.

Kamal advised all concerned - especially fans - to encourage healthy, meaningful and decent cinema to help the society at large correct itself.

"'Jai Ho' is from Ramayan to Rahman; I will take no credit for it" - Gulzar

By Subhash K. Jha, December 7, 2009 - 16:06 IST

From the Ramayan to Rahman, that's the journey that according to Gulzar saab, the phrase 'Jai Ho' has made. "It's not as if I coined it on the spot for Slumdog Millionaire," says Gulzar saab after hearing that 'Jai Ho' has been nominated on Thursday in prestigious category of 'Best Song Written For A Motion Picture' at the Grammys.

"'Jai Ho' is a term that is as ancient as it is sacrosanct. I would sound extremely foolish if I took any credit for that phrase or for the success of that song. The entire credit must go to Rahman and Rahman alone. He has taken our popular sounds to an international level."

On hearing of his song 'Jai Ho' being nominated for the coveted Grammy, the song's writer Gulzar saab makes a startling observation and suggestion. "Both me and Rahman have done work that has been like before. What makes 'Jai Ho' special was that it was part of a non-Indian film. Slumdog Millionaire is not an Indian film. Just like Gandhi was not. We need to understand that international recognition comes to us when India is packaged into a non-Indian vehicle. Slumdog Millionaire could vie for mainstream American and European awards because it was an international film. Otherwise our films like Neecha Nagar, Mother India, Do Beegha Zameen and the films of Mrinal Sen and Satyajit Ray have been nominated in the 'foreign' categories." Gulzar saab has a suggestion. "Let's have a category for best foreign cinema in our National awards so that we too have a chance to recognize films made outside India."

As for 'Jai Ho' acquiring a life much longer than the film, Gulzar saab says, "When I wrote 'Jai Ho' I was looking for a phrase that would best represent Indian sentiments. That it's now gone from the Oscars where movies are honoured, to the Grammys where music gets recognized, is an amazing journey for 'Jai Ho'. Like I said it's from the Ramayan to Rahman. I will take no credit for it."

Track: Gangsta Blues, Slumdog millionaire

Used this in my new video compilation.

Needed upbeat song with nice beats and not much of change in rhythm, not a conventional rap routine. So this very much suited my video.

Yes. Mausam and Escape is the best pick of the album. But to be nominated in the best song category, the track should have a voice in it, right? M & E is purely instrumental.
