My only speculation is ARR might win for the song and not the background score. I surely would love to see win background score more than the song!!

Anyways, if he takes 3.. cannot be more proud, i am taking off on 23rd.

There is no such rule.
In the original song category, two songs of his are competing with each other, so only one can win. And he can win one for best original score. So that makes it max 2.

ADVANCE WISHES AND PRAYER TO OUR 'ISAIPUYAL' A.R.RAHMAN

whats wrong with that? they are simply saying that for the song jai ho, gulzar has been nominated for lyricist. usually a song is nominated not just for its music, but also for the lyrics in which case gulzar is also part of the song and therefore it is also his first nomination.

they are basically saying some new things. aprt from arr who is nominated for that song, gulzar is also to share that because he wrote lyrics. if u take springsteen, he wrote the song and also composed it so all credits to him. here apart from rahman, gulzar also shares credit for the song, thats why they mentioned it. no mistake, atleast dont think so.

'Rahman will win the Oscars' – Suhasini Mani Ratna
IndiaGlitz [Saturday, January 24, 2009]
Suhasini Mani Ratnam is thrilled and happy over A R Rahman's nominations for the Oscars. Obviously, because she had seen him at very close quarters since the 'Mozart of Madras' made his debut in 'Roja'. Also, the prolific music composer was introduced by no lesser a person than Mani Ratnam himself.
Suhasini Mani Ratnam expressed confidence that Rahman's work in 'Slumdog Millionaire' has everything in it to claim the Oscars. 'It's quite a fresh composition, which is soothing and very Indian. It is a great work by Rahman. I was expecting the Oscar to come Rahman's way long before. I though his work in Shekar Kapoor's 'Elizabeth 2' was so stunning that he would win it. But the moment seems to have arrived with 'Slumdog Millionaire'.
Several prominent film personalities including music composer Srikanth Deva, director Radha Mohan, actor Prakashraj, director Ameer and actress Trisha expressed confidence that Rahman would make India proud by bringing home the coveted Oscar Awards.

CHENNAI: The Tamil film fraternity is celebrating A R Rahman's nominations to the Oscars with so much joy and pride.

That he belongs to Bollywood as well, or got nominated for the Academy Awards for an English film, is no reason to not be bashful.

The 'Mozart of Madras' might have courted fame with international collaborations, Bollywood flicks and solos, but Chennai has welcomed him with arms wide open every time he returned with a Tamil cinema, commanding a grip over Chennaiites like no other musician has.

Slumdog Millionaire, a film with a relatively unknown cast, by a filmmaker who still remains obscure to many, has stepped in to the limelight, thanks to Rahman's musical score. The movie, already available on DVD, and the music selling like hot cakes, are ample proof for it. And his Oscar nomination, 16 years after he first took on his magical keyboard to play Chinna Chinna Aasai, gives the entire industry reason to celebrate.

Actor Madhavan feels it a time of sheer happiness.

"We're making headlines not just as a growing economy now, but as people with creative brilliance. It augurs so well for cinema as a whole too," says the actor.

The sixteen years of incessant hard work put in by the musician, makes him the most likely candidate for an Oscar, claims lyricist Vairamuthu.

"This honour hasn't come to him overnight. It is the result of enormous toil by the youngster," he quips.

Vairamuthu, who has been a great part of Rahman's journey from his first song in Roja, thinks Rahman deserves it and is so sure that he will get it.

me and bala watched SDM in Sathyam this morning.........its a typical bollywood masala film with glaring logical loop holes and very ordinary writing - both dialogues and characterisation............but as a masala movie, it worked completely for me..........the triumph of human spirit was shown exceedingly well in last 20 mins........jai ho song in climax just lifted the spirits......o saya was very very haunting and camerawork was just brilliant.........we, indian movies, seriously have a long way to go, in terms of technical brilliance Smile ..........latika's theme and liquid dance were highpoints of the movie........technically, the movie was just brilliant - camera, lighting, sound, music ofcourse ....

oscar nomination for SDM makes me even prouder now, since its a tribute to our own Bollywood type movie making Bow esp, climax scenes or lead up to it reminded me of shankar movies Laughing .......finally west acknowledges our movie making style Thumbs Up!

people just clapped in the theater after climax scene - they were stunned............

//there was nothing derogatory or objectionable about India or Mumbai or Indians......watever he has shown was/is true - hope it will not be true in some years Smile ........//

Oscar,My wife's real dream:ARR
Slumdog Millionaire music director A.R. Rahman says getting three Oscar nominations is more of a "dream come true" for his wife Saira as she has always wanted him to win the coveted international honour.

"What can I say? It's a dream come true not so much for me as my wife. She'd wake up in the middle of the night and say, 'I want you to win an Oscar'. And I'd just smile. Today my wife's dream seems a possibility," Rahman said.

"But I don't want to get too hopeful," he quickly added. "Let's just rejoice for the nomination at the moment. I'm happy not just for myself but Gulzar saab who has been nominated for the lyrics of Jai ho. I wish Javed saab had got nominated too. If he had written a song in Slumdog Millionaire I'm sure he too would've been nominated," the music director said.

Rahman has received the three Oscar nominations for the music he composed for British filmmaker Danny Boyle's rags-to-riches film Slumdog Millionaire. While one nomination is for best original score, two are for the best original songs - Jai ho and O saya.

The composer said he is glad he was in Chennai with his family when the nominations were announced.

"My wife and children jumped with joy when they heard the announcement. And my mother is also here with me. It's all her prayers and support and her upbringing that's bearing fruit now," he said.

Rahman was actually supposed to be in Mumbai for the premiere of the Hindi version of Slumdog Millionaire Thursday.
"Because of some work in Chennai I couldn't attend the premiere in Mumbai. It happened for the best. Because otherwise I wouldn't be here with my family to share this moment."
Rahman says he wasn't too sure of making it to the Oscar nominations after he got the Golden Globe. "I know the Golden Globes are the precursors to the Oscars. But honestly, it sometimes works in reverse. Bruce Springsteen, who got the Golden Globe, hasn't got into the Oscar. Thank God, it went the right way for me."
He now looks forward to the Oscar award ceremony. "The ceremony is on Feb 22. But I've business to attend to. So I'll be leaving for LA (Los Angeles) very shortly. And, yes, my wife will be attending the Oscar ceremonies with me. How can she not? She dreamt this dream for me."
All he asks for now is the prayers of his countrymen.
"It's a moment of pride not just for me. India has done it. Pray that I bring home the Oscar," he said.
Rahman got his first big break in Mani Ratnam's Roja and later composed music for many films in southern India. His first full-fledged Bollywood project was Ram Gopal Varma's hit Rangeela.
The musical genius not only won hearts in India but also made a mark on the global music scene. He got his first international break when Andrew Lloyd Webber invited him to compose music for the Broadway musical Bombay Dreams, which won him immense fame. He also composed for the stage adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkien's Lord Of The Rings that premiered in Canada in 2006 and in London in 2007.

So, I took a break and went to London. Primarily to attend the “Slumdog” premiere, but watching a lot of new cinema, attending workshops , masterclass( charlie Kaufman), and bookhunting. From what i saw the coming year seems like the year of british cinema and the argentinians. I hope one day we can say that about us on a world platform. Will talk about the highs that i felt, the films i saw but before that let me say it here that this year we could possibly see an academy award for Best score for A. R. Rahman for Slumdog millionaire , definitely will see a nomination. What is sad is that it won’t be for an indian film. What is even sadder is that not just SlumDog is made by a british filmmaker, that too a celebrated one, but when it came to our indian studios for funding they turned it down. Both UTV and Reliance.

[tscii:85cdf675fc]The Challenges Of Filming 'Slumdog Millionaire'
The sleeper hit of the season Slumdog Millionaire opened Friday in India, the day after it picked up 10 Oscar nominations.

The movie also won the Golden Globe for Best Picture. When director Danny Boyle accepted the award, he thanked his three musketeers, including the film's line producer Tabrez Noorani. Noorani was in charge of all the logistics, scheduling and meetings in India.

And shooting a film like Slumdog Millionaire was especially complicated, partly because of the scene locations that were chosen — like the Red Light District and the train station — and partly because the culture is vastly different from Los Angeles.

Noorani says that even if you have all of the necessary permits, you still have to inform the people involved — like the principal at a school — that you'll be there the full day. If you don't, you'll probably be told to leave, he says.

"You can have every single permit and you're unable to shoot," Noorani tells Michele Norris. "A lot of things happen under the table — it's part of the business. It's really not about money, it really ends up being about respect and the way you treat people."

It's also important to go talk to government officials in person to get permits, he says, instead of picking up the phone.

"The very act of you going to them will solve the problem," he says. "And that is why the preproduction is actually usually a lot longer in India than it is in other countries."

Besides dealing with people, there were scenes that were especially challenging to shoot, Noorani says. At the end of the film, the couple kisses and two trains and thousands of people arrive and they all break out in a synchronized dance sequence. That scene was what "scared" Noorani most, he says.

There were six platforms, and each platform needed to be lit. The lights had to be placed in between the electrical wires at the train station, and the electricity could not be cut. And they had to shoot the scene when the trains weren't running, so they were there between 2 a.m. and 4 a.m. for about 10 days. They ended up doing about 15 takes.

"It was physically hard to get these thousands of extras, first have them practice somewhere else, then have them come in and get the sequence done over a matter of a few hours," Noorani says. "It was quite an ordeal."

Another scene that was tricky — that "borders on being unsafe," Noorani says — was in the Red Light District where there are gangsters, unruly crowds and "the cops will make it very difficult for you to shoot there." Noorani says he was partly responsible for the crew's safety.

"It's not really a friendly place," he says. "You have a mob mentality that can very very quickly emerge. And we had lots of pushing and shoving, and at some point someone was shoved and one of the English crew retaliated to protect our crew members and that was it, we had to stop shooting … It's things like that that can very quickly spiral out of control."P>

In giving advice to Hollywood producers interested in filming in India, Noorani says you must have patience.

"Things are getting so much easier, the government is relaxing a bit, but you need to trust and have the patience to shoot as well," he says.

Slumdog Filmmakers Respond To Indian Protests

The producer and the director of Slumdog Millionaire, which currently appears to have the inside track in the Oscar race, have responded to growing protests in India of the film -- and particularly of the title. In an interview with Reuters, director Danny Boyle said that such protests were "part of the fabric of life in India ... For us, 'slumdog' was always a very affectionate term because ... it was a hybrid, a mixture of underdog and rooting for the underdog, and obviously he comes from the slums." Producer Christian Colson also said that claims by parents of one of the slum kids who appeared in the film that they received virtually nothing for their work were "inaccurate." In a separate interview with Reuters, Colson said, "Immediately after we cast the kids, we put in place a plan of action for their future welfare, over and above the money we paid them; we did that in consultation with their parents." He said the plan included enrolling the kids in school for the first time in their lives and setting up a fund to pay for their education, medical emergencies and basic living. Boyle added: "What you've got to do is somehow try and get a plan that isn't about the absolute immediate, it's about the long-term benefit for the kids. If we can give them something back, that will benefit them throughout their lives, that's what you want to achieve.

SRK slams critics of SDM

Slamming the critics of Oscar nominated 'Slumdog Millionaire' , Bollywood star Shah Rukh Khan has said that the poverty highlighted in the movie is a "reality" and wondered why people in India tend to become cynical when something good is happening.
"Isn't that (poverty and slums) a reality ? If you (critics) have a problem with the word slumdog, why don't you look positively and see that there is a word millionaire or 'crorepati' also," Khan, who returned from Los Angeles yesterday after a month-long schedule of Karan Johar's 'My name is Khan' told reporters.

Critics felt that the movie sells India's poverty to West and some others had raised objections to the word 'slumdog' on grounds that people living in Indian slums were being referred to as 'dogs'.

"I have just returned from the US and people there have become crazy about the film and its music. The film's sound is also good apart from a good story and screenplay. The film deserves all awards," Khan, who has read the original book as well as the script, said.

The actor said that he does not regret declining Anil Kapoor's role in the film.

"I cant regret something which I could not have done. I don't think I would have done justice to the role of a game show host like Anil Kapoor," he said at the launch of his company's foray into television content last night with 'Ghar Ki Baat hai'.

SRK said that during the period which Danny Boyle shot the film, he was already hosting 'Kaun Banega Crorepati' (KBC) and later 'Kya Aap Panchvi Pass Se Tez Hai'.

"I am still on contract for a new season of these shows," Khan said.

SRK said Oscars and Golden Globe awards are a symbol of international recognition.

"I love awards and I hope to feature in a film comprising Indian cast and crew some day which will go to win these awards," he said adding "the success of 'Slumdog Millionaire' worldwide is an incentive to all Indian filmmakers."

[tscii:c14cc6245c]A.R. Rahman Scores With 'Slumdog Millionaire'

All Things Considered, January 31, 2009 - If you were to name a few musicians who've sold more than 100 million albums, Elvis Presley and The Beatles would surely top your list. Here's another one to add: A.R. Rahman. Rahman has composed the music for more than 130 films in India — and he has indeed sold more than 100 million records worldwide. Here in America, however, many are hearing his music for the first time in the Academy Award-nominated film Slumdog Millionaire.

Rahman has already picked up a Golden Globe for his work, an honor he says truly surprised him.

"I never thought about awards when doing this movie," he says. "I just wanted to have fun."

The music from Slumdog Millionaire is infectious, filled with exciting hooks that make it impossible to sit still. One such hit, "Jai Ho," closes the film in classic Bollywood style: a colorful, elaborate dance routine featuring the entire cast.

"I was very clear that nobody would understand most of the lyrics in Hindi," he says. "So I needed to have certain syllables that will attract any audience and they could sing. 'Jai ho' means 'be victorious.' It's like a blessing, and it also can be pronounced very easily."

For the Slumdog Millionaire score, Rahman blended classic Indian styles and instruments with reggae, Brazilian drumming and Western electronica in an eclectic melting pot. In "Mausam and Escape," a dynamic sitar is layered over a driving pulse — a dramatic difference from the more somber, traditional sitar sound that Indian music usually employs. Rahman says it's one of his favorite songs from the soundtrack.

Next month, Rahman is up for three Academy Awards, and will perform at the ceremony. His usual shows include up to 80 people on stage: a string section, 20 dancers, many kinds of ethnic instruments and India's superstar singers. He says he's not sure what this performance will entail, but it's likely to be electrifying.

Slumdog races past $ 100 million in box office

February 02, 2009 13:11 IST

The flavour of the season, Slumdog Millionaire [Images], raced beyond the $100 million benchmark worldwide over the weekend. For a film that cost a mere $15 million and which is also substantially in Hindi, this is a landmark achievement. It has already become profitable in its limited worldwide run.

In India, however, it plunged by about 70 percent in its second weekend, according to the trade publication Variety. Even then, it grossed a decent $ 4 million. 'A respectable accomplishment,' declared Variety, 'but well below the perfs of Bollywood hits.'

In other countries, the drop has been less than 28 percent till now.

The backlash against the film in some quarters should not affect its Oscar chances, argued Roger Friedman of Fox News, which is owned by the film's North American distributor Fox Searchlight. 'Let's not let some weird backlash hurt it at the last minute,' he asserted recently calling the movie a 'multicultural triumph.'

'We should only be happy to see the whole audience at the Kodak Theatre get up on their feet and dance to Jai ho on February 22,' Friedman added. 'The rest doesn't matter, not now.'

The movie, which will be opening in more than 60 countries in the next two weeks has grossed $67 million in North America, has taken a sensational $20 million in the United Kingdom reigning at the top for three consecutive weeks. In Australia [Images], it has nabbed over $5.2 million; $4.2 million in France [Images], $3.6 million in Italy [Images] and about $1 million in Switzerland [Images]. Its box office abroad will gain a big boost with its release in key territories such as Germany [Images], Spain and Japan [Images].

Fox Searchlight, which distributed the film in America and Canada [Images], pointed out that the movie, which is in its 12th week and ranked number five in the American box office charts last week, is playing strongly in smaller markets, including such locales as Columbia, South Carolina, and Butte, Montana. It is also doing excellent business in smaller Canadian cities that have no significant South Asian audiences.

'The film has exploded into the mainstream audience because of the Golden Globe [Images] Awards, the Academy nominations and now the Producers Guild of America best film award,' said Searchlight senior VP of distribution Sheila DeLoach in an interview before the movie won the Directors Guild award.

Among the Oscar nominated films like The Curious Case of Benjamin Button and Doubt, Slumdog is the most beloved, and has seen the biggest box office gains.

'While the four other films are all of the highest quality, we do feel echoes of past moviegoing experience in each of them,' Roger Friedman added. 'Button is especially guilty of this because of the onerous Forrest Gump associations. But Milk is a little like Brokeback Mountain; The Reader has Schindler's List and English Patient traces, and Frost/Nixon is a classic fencing match.'

But Slumdog is the one honest-to-God totally cool, out of left field, genius entry from 2008, Friedman asserted. 'Watching it for the first time, without a lot of hype, you can feel the breathtaking achievement of mixing old and new India, American game shows, class warfare, all of it. Slumdog is alive with possibilities for new avenues of filmmaking, a multicultural triumph.'

It is quite possible.
contrary to popular beliefs Oscars is not like films being chosen purely based on critical acclaim alone. Members are spread across the entire USA and some from outside as well. Much like in elections where veiled slanders are cast on candidates and parties - same thing might happen here too. However the nominated movie producers engage team of agents who respond to such behind the scenes campaigns and restore parity.

Apart from ARR, one thing that caught my attention in SDM is the little Jamal, Ayush Mahesh Khedekar. Cute and naughty, that li'l kid showed subtle expressions and has done an incredible job. Would have loved to seen him in few more scenes. Kutty Kamal Hassan madhiri irukkiran. Did anyone else notice? IMO the best actor in the movie even with that less scenes 8-)

Grammy for Sukhwinder Singh?
02 Feb, 2009 06:00 am ISTlRenuka Vyavahare/INDIATIME S MOVIES

Be it Dard-E-Disco, Chak De India , Rut Aa gayi Re from 1947 Earth, Chaiyya Chaiyya , Ramta Jogi from Taal, Kava Kava from Monsoon Wedding , Jalwa from Fashion and Jai Ho from Slumdog Millionaire. .. This singer has been consistent in singing chartbuster numbers. Sukhvinder Singh got candid with Renuka Vyavahare about his Oscar nominated song ' Jai Ho ' and his reaction to him deserving a Grammy for is vocal talent.

Rahman has won three Oscar nominations for Jai ho. Are you expecting a Grammy nomination too?
I am actually a Slumdog Millionaire. I had nothing when I started singing and few songs of mine have made me a millionaire! I am more than happy for Rahman and his three nominations at the Oscars. The fact that Jai Ho has been such a huge hit internationally itself is my Grammy award.

So all geared up to perform live at the Oscars with Rahman?
I am leaving for Chennai tomorrow and only then will I know what will be my role at the ceremony. I have to first sit and personally wish Rahman for his Oscar nominations.

Do you feel sidelined in spite of having sung a song which has become a worldwide hit?
Working with Rahman means everything to me and frankly when I sing at live concerts the audiences enjoy my song from Fashion (Jalwa) more than anything else. My other song this year that has been a big hit is Haule Haule and I am happy with all my songs. I have sung limited but different and interested numbers.

Did you ever feel that Jai Ho and Slumdog will become such a huge hit?
I always knew that Rahman will be nominated for Oscars as well as Golden Globe. I always call him Mr International as his music sounds very western. He doesn't agree with me though and says "Sukhvinder, just concentrate. " As far as me predicting Jai Ho's success is concerned, when you record with Rahman you have no clue which film the song is going to get used in. I never knew he was going to use Ramta Jogi for Taal, Rut Aa gayi Re for 1947 Earth etc so likewise didn't know Jai Ho will be in Slumdog! But always knew the song was great and required me to sing naughtily.

So Rahman is unpredictable?
Absolutely, when Rahman, Gulzaar saab and I get together we just work for our love for music and songs. Be it at any hour of the night, day, noon... Rahman just calls you in his studio and makes you sing! Many a times you are not even completely awake to sing!

What is next on cards?
I am planning to launch a music album with Rahman and his music school will also be actively involved in it.

Eyeing the Oscar
IndiaGlitz [Monday, February 02, 2009]

Rasool Pookutty, a sound engineer from Mumbai has made it big after being nominated for the Oscars for Best sound mixing in 'Slumdog Millionaire'.

Brimming with joy, Rasool said, "Being nominated for the Oscar and winning the Award is the ultimate dream for every artist in cinema."

Slumdog Millionaire is a unique film that was shot very differently. It had a different storyline which involved every one of us, he said.

He further adds that the nomination proves that if freedom and opportunities are given they can come up with wonderful results and recognition.

Rasool, who hails Rahman as one of the best music composers in the world, says, ' I hope to do a movie in future. Wielding the megaphone is my greatest desire'.

Shamal Sengupta, who teaches direction at Subhash Ghai's filmmaking institute Whistling Woods in Mumbai, tells us why he disliked Slumdog Millionaire.

'What has Rahman done in Slumdog Millionaire to get an Oscar nomination?'

Slumdog will definitely bag an Oscar or two. But that would be a shame. The sanctity of the Oscars was lost long ago, so Slumdog will not the only film that will show it down. There are many other films that deserve it more.
I must mention A R Rahman. What has he done in Slumdog Millionaire to get an Oscar nomination? He is such a great musician, he has composed better music in other films. I am sure that he knows himself that he has done a very mediocre job here.

The background score is a disaster. The song Jai Ho and its picturisation is another disaster. Why did the song need to be in the film? What a waste! It was very unnecessary for that song to be in the film; more so, to be shot in Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus.

'I don't think a film like this will ruin our country's worth'

Rahman will get his cheque and continue making music and entertaining us. But the question is why waste your talent for money?

Portraying India this way gives a very bad taste. India has always been looked upon from the fixed viewpoints of poverty, prostitution, crime, superstition and blind beliefs.

But let me also tell you what I liked about the film. The technical aspects like camera work, shooting locations, and location management were well done. I will definitely show this film to my students to teach them camera angles.

I am not being patriotic, I am just being reasonable. I don't think a film like this will ruin our country's worth. I think the world knows that India is not just

SDM to release in Tamil on Feb 14th
IndiaGlitz [Wednesday, February 04, 2009]

Slumdog Millionaire, which has been nominated for several Oscar awards, is ready to speak in Tamil. Directed by Danny Boyle with musical score by A R Rahman, the Tamil version is titled 'Nanum Koteeswaran'.

It is being produced by K Natarajan of Falcon Films. Interestingly, actor Silambarasan has dubbed the voice for Dev Patel, who played the hero, while noted playback singer S P Balasubramaniam has given the voice for AnilKapoor and actor Radha Ravi for Irfan Khan.

The film will be released on 14th February. On dubbing for the movie, Silambarasan said, ' I saw the film three times last week. The screenplay, music and the romance between the lead pair looks marvelous on screen. I am so proud to be a part of such a landmark film which dominated the prestigious Golden Globe awards and ready to pick several Oscar awards'.

Composer Rahman has no regrets about ‘Slumdog’

[html:e40ec92fd1]

http://www.themalaysianinsider.com/images/stories/2009feb2/rahman-feb6.jpg
[/html:e40ec92fd1]

NEW YORK, Feb 6 — Oscar nominee A.R. Rahman has a polite suggestion for those in Bollywood who complain that the hit film “Slumdog Millionaire” casts India in a negative light with its depiction of poverty in Mumbai's slums: don't just criticise it but make your own film.

“In my opinion if creative people want to comment on a film, and if I were a director and felt that way, I would make another film and prove my point and say this is what India is about,” Rahman told The Associated Press in an interview from Los Angeles before returning home to work on film scores before participating in the Feb 22 Oscars awards show.

As for “Slumdog Millionaire,” the noted Indian film music composer believes it is “a great statement of showing in a way the past reality and the growth of the economy in India, which all comes across beautifully.”

The 43-year-old Rahman has been hailed in India for his three Oscar nominations for “Slumdog Millionaire” — for best original score and the songs “O ... Saya” and “Jai Ho.” But the rags-to-riches saga of a Mumbai orphan who competes on India’s “Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?” quiz show received a controversial reception in India.

Rahman refused to comment on a defamation lawsuit filed against him and actor Anil Kapoor, who plays the quizmaster in the film, by a Mumbai slum-dwellers’ rights group alleging its members found the term “Slumdog” insulting.

But he said he had no qualms about working on the film with British director Danny Boyle and his crew, whom he described as "very sensitive people."

“When you came out of the film ... that felt so good and positive that nothing else mattered to me,” said Rahman. “I loved working with Danny and I loved his whole vision of the screenplay and the artistic quality of the film.

“And for me it’s not about India alone, it’s about the human spirit which triumphs, and this could have happened in China or Brazil or anywhere else.”

Rahman says the film is consistent with his humanitarian goals. An honorary UN ambassador, he set up the A.R. Rahman Foundation to support educational programs for underprivileged children across India. He has also founded a conservatory in his home city of Chennai to prepare youngsters for careers in music. — AP

A.R. Rahman, Slumdog Millionaire Maestro (http://www.time.com/time/arts/article/0,8599,1876545,00.html)

By S. James Snyder

He's been a Bollywood icon for years, this man behind some of the most stunning movie soundtracks ever composed (chief among them the innovative score to Roja). But it's his music for this year's Oscar darling, Slumdog Millionaire that has made A.R. Rahman an instant hit with western audiences. Not only are sales of the soundtrack soaring as the film opens wide in Britain and the United States, but Rahman has been nominated for three Oscars — for best original score, as well as for the songs "O ... Saya" and "Jai Ho." (Read the behind-the-scenes story of Slumdog Millionaire's unlikely ascension to Oscar favorite).

You've worked on so many Bollywood epics, but Slumdog Millionaire was a film made by a team of Brits who set up camp in India. Was it a different experience, working on this film?

Definitely. The way that [Director] Danny uses music in his films is completely different from even other directors in the West. He uses songs as scores, and uses each moment of music as a highlight, which is very exciting. So I knew he was going to mix the music very high, which normally is not the case in most films, where the music is mixed underneath the action and gets drowned out.

[b]What was the process between you and Danny?

I knew he had a very good ear for music, and I trusted the way he selected cues. I gave him four or five choices for each cue and then he would pick the one he liked and he would spend weeks trying to insert them. Any good idea I had, I'd send him a scratch of it via e-mail, and then he'd respond to two or three of those. It was a totally different way of working. [It meant that] there were a lot of ideas that didn't get used but it worked out all right.

You spoke directly to the people of India the night you won your Golden Globe...

Well, I initially kept [my involvement] a secret. I thought that maybe if Danny didn't like my stuff, it would only be between him and me. I did no publicity until I knew everything was working. India is a big fan of Hollywood, but we also love our regional stuff, and it's a great moment for the country when one of their own gets recognized. When I won, I felt from my heart I should say, "This is for you guys, you've been wanting it."

What was the reaction when you got back home?

There were drums and dancers, it was just like in the movies. At the airport, there was a lot of goodwill, and I think you're able to see it on YouTube. [See clip below]. It's all so good, though, because India has been through this huge thing with the Bombay , and the floods and so many other things. I'm glad there's something to cheer about, and I hope the controversies don't bring that celebration down.

[b]Well, talk a bit about the film's controversial reception in India?

I feel that the intention of the movie was right, but people were a bit touchy about the dog thing. It's kind of an insult if you have the word "dog" in the title. That's what they are objecting to, but I don't think it was intentional from the creators. What I like is that here are probably the richest people in the world, living in Bombay, and the poorest of the slums, all coexisting. This movie kind of shows both.

What was it like working with M.I.A.?

I listened to her three or four years back — one of my friends played it for me and I was stunned by her whole vision. It was completely new and bold, and normally when a person comes from India you expect a differentness, but she was bold, very sweet but in your face. I met her when she came to my studio to work on some stuff for another album and I said, "Let's do something together." Danny later suggested her name and I immediately said "That's a great idea." On 'O ... Saya,' I did the chant lyrics and she did the chasing [lyrics]. I would work on some of the track and send it to her through the e-mail and she would do the vocals in New York and then sent them back.

Listening to the Slumdog Millionaire soundtrack, every track sounds so different.

I took a cue from how Danny did his other soundtracks. There wasn't one composer [on his previous films,] but rather so many people were involved. I asked him, "Can I do the whole score," and he said, "Definitely, if you have the time, I would love you to." But I wanted to innovate and to do justice to the film, so I tried to approach it as if each cue was from a different composer, with a different exoticness. So there's a very vintage '90s Bollywood cue, and then a more edgy, hip-hop sound and then a world music kind of thing. It was great fun.

Times Interview.

Deadline Hollywood Daily has obtained a letter from Gabriel in which he describes his reasons for pulling out of the show. The issue is that, even though there are three nominees, Gabriel's song from Wall-E and the two A.R. Rahman songs from Slumdog Millionaire will be turned into a medley. Terrible idea. Terrible. What's worse, Gabriel says he's barely getting a minute of performance time during the ill-conceived medley.

"I was delighted when 'Down to Earth' was nominated for an Oscar. I was also pleased to have been asked to perform the song in the Oscar ceremony. However, in recent discussions with the Producers, it became clear that despite there being only three nominees, only 60-65 seconds was being offered, and that was also in a medley of the three songs. I don't feel that is sufficient time to do the song justice, and have decided to withdraw from performing."

"I fully respect and look forward to the Producers' right to revamp the show. Even though song writers are small players in the film making process, they are just as committed and work just as hard as the rest of the team and I regret that this new version of the ceremony is being created, in part, at their expense."

"I still very much look forward to attending the ceremony."

Billion bets on 'Slumdog Millionaire' in India

"Slumdog Millionaire" strike gold at the Oscars? A whopping Rs.2 billion ($41 million) is said to be riding on that question, as bookies pitch for the rags-to-riches drama, setting off a new betting trend in India. The Oscar awards ceremony is Feb 22, and the film set in India has 10 nominations. This includes three entries for music maestro A.R. Rahman's background score and two songs. And they have all emerged as clear favourites with the bookies.

India has traditionally seen a lot of betting in sports, especially cricket.

"This is yet another new trend picking up in Indian betting circles. Probably this will be the first time when both bookies and punters in the country are placing bets on the Oscars," a Mumbai-based bookie told IANS on condition of anonymity.

"Many of the punters who used to bet on cricket largely are now discussing 'Slumdog Millionaire' s' chances of winning. But the number of punters and bookies is still very less as people are not aware where to bet and how to bet," said the bookie.

Rahman has been nominated for Best Original Score and his songs "Jai Ho" and "O Saaya" are also up for the Best Original Song for a motion picture.

"Punters are crazy about A.R. Rahman. The reason behind placing bets on Rahman could be his high status in the Indian entertainment industry. The Indian connection to the movie also makes it favourite among the punters," said a punter.

According to some rough estimates provided by bookies, about Rs.2 billion is riding on "Slumdog Millionaire" in the Indian betting circles.

Last month the film won four Golden Globes and recently bagged seven British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) awards. The BAFTA win has fuelled its Oscar chances.

While international websites began accepting bets on "Slumdog Millionaire" as soon as the Oscar nominations were announced, the Indian bookies reacted to it later.

The bookies say lack of knowledge about international films is also holding people back from placing bets on Oscars. Outside India too huge money is riding on "Slumdog Millionaire" and its director.

On betting site Paddy Power, both the film and its director Danny Boyle have odds of 2/5 (0.4) to win the Best Picture and Best Director, respectively.

According to the famous US-based betting website betus.com, the money line for "Slumdog Millionaire" is 250. For Danny Boyle, it is 225. This is because both are hot favourites to win in their respective categories.

In the international bookies circuit, however, there are no bets for Rahman winning the Oscars as most of the bets are on the acting, best film and best director categories.

What is AR Rahman's choice for the Oscar's night?

A R Rahman has finally packed his bags for the big night. We hear that the ace musical composer had a variety of options that his stylist Vijayeta Kumar suggested him and his wife Saira to wear. Besides a Rohit Bal outfit, sources also claim that his bag carries a Lanvin and an Armani Tux and perhaps a Sabyasachi Mukherjee creation too.

Bal has given a lean silhouette to Rahman by opting for a tapered bandhgala and slim pants in black. To give it a red-carpet touch, Bal has made the collar and cuffs ornate with tonal beads.

According to sources, fashion designer Sabyasachi Mukherjee has also made a set of clothes for both Rahman and Saira. Apparently, the Kolkata-based designer has made a Kashmiri-kantha black tone-on-tone kurta and Aligarhi pyjamas for Rahman and a bodycon (body- contoured) kurta and an antique dupatta for Saira.

All eyes are trained on A R Rahman's Oscar fever...will he do India proud in a Gudda or a Sabya creation or would he reach out to a Lanvin or an Armani Tux?

What this got to do with dignity bro?
We don't even like him repeating his music, whats with him repeating his speech. It will sound lame if he keeps saying 'Unbelievable' everytime....

I''m sure he will get 2 Oscars now...

For Original Score, it has been confirmed long ago, and with Peter pulling out from the performance he would have incurred the Oscar committees wrath...so original song is going to ARR too....

Imagine ARR says "Unbelievable once again...bla bla bla" for the first award and "Again and again unbelievable...bla bla bla" on stage!......sounds kiddo man

Talking Shop: AR Rahman

With more than a hundred movies to his credit and countless hit songs in his native India, it is no surprise that composer AR Rahman has been dubbed "the Mozart of Madras".

The Chennai-born 42-year-old is earning yet more plaudits as the man behind the soundtrack for Danny Boyle's hit movie Slumdog Millionaire.

Having won a Bafta film award on Sunday for best original score, he is now waiting to see if he will receive the same accolade when the Academy Awards are held in Los Angeles on 22 February.

He also has two nominations in the best song category for his exhilarating anthems Jai Ho and O Saya - the latter featuring British hip-hop artist MIA.

How has it been to be part of Slumdog Millionaire's remarkable awards success?

It's been a great two months.

Right after all the tragedies in Mumbai (Bombay), I lost my sound engineer who was very close to me - it all happened in the same week.

Then the Golden Globe nominations were announced and all those good things happened, to cheer me up I guess. It's a dream come true.

MIA didn't let her pregnancy stop her appearing at the Grammys on Sunday. Will she perform at the Oscars?

That's the million dollar question. She wants to. In fact, she said she'll do it with a hologram. She has all these ideas.

I don't know how it's going to be possible, though. Having a baby is such an important thing in your life - more important than winning an Oscar.

How surprised were you to have two of your songs nominated?

It was really surprising - I had very low expectations.

I thought Jai Ho would get probably one. It was great to get two. We were surprised Bruce Springsteen's song from The Wrestler wasn't there after it won the Golden Globe.

O Saya and Jai Ho appear at opposite ends of Danny Boyle's film. What were your intentions with the two tracks?

Unlike conventional scores, which go underneath certain scenes, Danny wanted every piece of music to be a highlight and to drive the film.

With O Saya, we wanted to kick-start the film - to tell the audience, "this is the ride you're going to take, here we come".

Jai Ho, which means "be victorious", is almost like an encore. It's amazing - when you go to America they get up and cheer.

Not everyone has been so delighted with Slumdog's success. Haven't there been objections in India to the title?

There are a couple of cases, saying it shows the country in a poor light. But being an ambassador for fighting poverty for the UN, I believe this film will make a greater statement than any politician or lobbyist.

I hope this will be a positive step towards eradicating poverty. In Mumbai, you have the richest man in the world and the poorest person in the world co-existing side by side, which is a shame. You can't accept that.

We understand you're not keen on "Bollywood" either...

I hate the word. I think it's derivative and it doesn't represent the entire film community in India.

There's the eastern film industry, four industries in the south - they all make extraordinary films. It's like saying the whole of the West is Hollywood.

Kylie Minogue presented you with your Bafta. Isn't she set to appear in a film you're working on?

Yes, we're doing a song together which she'll perform in the movie. The film is called Blue and is being shot in Hawaii and a lot of other places.

AR Rahman was speaking to BBC News Entertainment reporter Neil Smith.

Govt. lauds Rahman, 'Slumdog' team

Mumbai (PTI): The government will not hesitate to consider 'stimulus' package for the film industry that has been affected by the financial downturn, Minister of State for External Affairs and Information and Broadcasting, Anand Sharma said on Tuesday.

"There is a need for the government and the (film) industry to work together. We are talking of stimulus and not bailout and the film industry also requires the same attention like any other sector," Sharma said inaugurating the three-day FICCI-Frames conference here.

Acknowledging the international success of 'Slumdog Millionaire', Sharma said 'Taare Zameen Par' failed to get similar recognition as it was made in Hindi. We are all proud of AR Rahman and other Indians associated with 'Slumdog Millionaire'.

But the song 'Ma' in 'Taare Zameen Par' was also very powerful. Why can't we institute awards like the Oscars? Sharma asked. Information and Broadcasting Secretary, Sushma Singh said that there was a need to evolve a system where expressions of interest or inquiries coming to the ministry are put on track.

She asked the film industry to suggest a system to evolve and channelise the process that will benefit both - the industry and the government. Singh said the film industry should help the government by suggesting effective steps to take the co-production treaties signed so far forward.

Information and Broadcasting Secretary said that the government had formulated a scheme to set a National Centre for Animation, Gaming and VFX on public-private partnership. The upgradation of the FTII Pune into a global film school will also be faciliated through the scheme, she said.

The ministry has also planned to set up a museum of moving images in the Films Division complex in Mumbai to track the development of the film industry, Singh said.

'Slumdog' Composer's Crescendo Of a Career
By Emily Wax

Washington Post Foreign Service
Thursday, February 19, 2009; C01

MUMBAI, India -- Before A.R. Rahman received three Academy Award nominations for his contributions to "Slumdog Millionaire's" Indian-infused techno soundtrack, he was known across India as "the Mozart of Madras." He's long been Bollywood's best-known composer, a household name for his love ballads, offbeat world rhythms and patriotic pop hits that have sold more than 100 million albums, making him one of the world's top-selling artists.

Across India, many fans celebrated his nominations (one for Best Original Score and two for Best Song), and newspaper headlines chanted, "Ra. Ra. Rahman." But most fans say "Slumdog's" score was far from his best work. He's much better known for his often emotional ballads in Bollywood megahits such as "Roja" and "Lagaan," and hailed by critics for brooding songs for art house films.

But for Rahman, "Slumdog's" fluid soundtrack is the culmination of his accomplishments. Like Rahman himself, the soundtrack has a vast range: It jumps from a punk song by the Clash to a Hindi anthem to an aching sitar solo.

"The reason I love 'Slumdog' is because the music is all world cultures, all celebrating," he said in a telephone interview from Los Angeles, which his entire extended family is visiting for Oscar night. "In India, I know people feel other film scores [of mine] are closer to their hearts. But when you are doing a film, it's very important to make the film look like one full piece of artwork. I think scoring 'Slumdog' with every kind of music possible, from Chinese to hip-hop to M.I.A. . . . was really fresh ground for me."

It was the film's British director, Danny Boyle, who picked Rahman. He asked him to capture Mumbai's frantic urban energy for his dark fairy tale of an orphan from the city's slums who goes on India's version of "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire." The film's most popular song is "Jai Ho," a bubbly Bollywood number that ends the movie with a classic song and-dance routine. It's been played at fashion shows in Paris and has become a hit in clubs across Europe and the United States.

Since the early 1990s, Rahman has been a musical chameleon. He's been a rock star and worked as an advertising jingle writer. He's melded the words of Indian poets, Arab hip-hop, Tamil folk and Sufi mysticism. And he worked briefly as a choreographer, putting together a stage extravaganza combining a Tamil dancing troupe with an unlikely partner -- Michael Jackson -- for a series of concerts in Germany 10 years ago.

Rahman, 42, said he always knew he would make his life about music. His father, R.K. Shekhar, was a well-known film composer for Malayalam-language movies in India's southern cinema, long considered some of the most subtle and serious films on the subcontinent. Rahman began studying the piano at age 4. Though his father died when Rahman was 9, his mother pushed him to hang out with friends of his father: tabla master Zakir Hussain and violinist and singer L. Shankar. They helped him get a scholarship to Trinity College, Oxford, where he earned a degree in Western classical music.

Following graduation, he became a jingle writer, a popular job in a country where songs selling products often become radio hits. But in 1991, he was hired to write and direct music for "Roja." He was just 25 and called it "a real milestone for me."

Rahman has recently started to compose more international scores, including last year's film "Elizabeth: The Golden Age." He studied Chinese and Japanese music to score the Mandarin language picture "Warriors of Heaven and Earth" in 2003.

His wife, Sairaa, said: "I've always told him, a composer is someone who composes soulful music. There are some of A.R.'s songs that have made me very emotional and I have cried. It is something that he creates from within."

"The Oscar is definitely the biggest moment in my life," she said. "I know he has won so many awards. But this one is special because he is representing India."

Rahman hopes all the attention will encourage other young Indians to choose music as a future.

"We really need that space for creativity in India right now," he said. "Most of all, I just want that to be recognized."

ARR hits in B4U

Accolades, Applause, Awards and A.R. Rahman are synonymous. First Indian to win the prestigious golden Globe for his score in Slum dog Millionaire and dedicate it to his country, he has done India proud.

This shy music maestro has a penchant for creating the most unconventional music and has reinvented himself time and again and come out in flying colors with each new composition. Recognition and appreciation is still following and he has been awarded the Bafta Award too, for best musical composition for the same film.

The film has also bagged 10 nominations at the Oscars scheduled on the 22nd Feb and Rehmaan is a very strong contender for it.

B4U Music congratulates A.R Rahman on his historic win at the Golden Globe and Bafta., and sends him best wishes for his nominations at the Oscars.

Leaked Oscar winner's list a fraud, says Academy

PTI | Friday, 20 February , 2009, 18:00

A list revealing the names of the Oscar winners that was doing the rounds of some online websites has been dismissed by the Academy authorities as "complete fraud". However, if the list is to be believed, Indian composer A R Rahman will have to return empty handed despite receiving three nominations for Slumdog Millionaire music.

But the Academy spokeswoman Leslie Unger was quick to dismiss the list as fraud.

"The document is a complete fraud," Leslie Unger said in response to the alleged leak which would have taken the excitement out of the award ceremony scheduled to take place this Sunday.

"PricewaterhouseCoopers is still counting the ballots, and there are only two people there who will know the complete list of winners in advance of the envelopes being opened during the ceremony," she told E! Online.

"The Academy's president is not advised of the winners in advance, and no such list is created," Unger added.

According to the list Slumdog Millionaire will sweep the show winning both the Best Picture award and the gong for 'Best Director' which will go to Danny Boyle.

'Rahman has great chance of winning Oscars'
New Delhi (PTI): Buoyed by the BAFTA win and the Cinema Audio Society (CAS) award for best sound mixing, Resul Pookutty of the 'Slumdog Millionaire' team is heading to Los Angeles and just wants to be "there and enjoy" the Oscar ceremony.

"Winning an Oscar nomination (for 'Slumdog Millionaire') is the highest honour any sound engineer can get," Pokutty said. "Winning or losing does not matter much though people are saying I have a great chance of winning. I just want to go there and enjoy," he said.

Pokutty, earlier, this week became the first Indian to win CAS award. The award was presented to him along with re-recording mixers Ian Tapp and Richard Pryke in Los Angeles during the 45th Annual Awards ceremony of CAS.

"This award is from the Guild as its a great honour. This is one of the biggest honour I can ever get," he said. The CAS consists of over 550 sound mixers and associates from the film and television industries.

Pokutty feels that Rahman has a great chance of winning an Oscar. "He has a great chance of winning," he said. Pokutty's colleagues at his Mumbai studio are just excited. "With his winning the CAS award, there is more than 70 per cent chance that he will bag the Oscar," said sound designer Amrit Pritam, who is an associate recordist for the Hindi version of 'Slumdog Millionaire'.

Pookutty, grew up in a small village of Vilakkupara in Kollam district of Kerala and came to Mumbai after graduating from FTII, Pune. His debut film was Rajat Kapoor's 'Private Detective' in 1997. His work in 'Gandhi My Father' and 'Ghajini' won critical acclaim.

AR Rahman – Destiny's Child

The biggest movie event of the year in Hollywood, Oscar Night will begin tomorrow and the prominence for this western event to India comes from the movie that has been making the head lines every other day, 'Slumdog Millionaire'.

With two Indians in contention, this year's academy award is a special event for the billions here in our country and they are ardently praying for our very own 'Mozart of Madras' to bag the coveted trophy making India proud. Tagging with Rahman is Maya Arulpragasam, easily identified as M.I.A christened after her first album 'Missing in Action'.

Despite pouring criticisms on 'Slumdog', for flaunting India's underbelly to the west and obnoxiously poking the miserable lives of slum kids in Asia's biggest slum Dharavi, the movie had a stupendous response in the west for the novel theme. British director Danny Boyle fascinated with Vikash Swaroop's 'Q & A', made this rags-to-riches story which turned the cast into overnight stars and they are basking in the glory of success now.

Media had a mighty feast in the past few weeks with controversial comments raging from every corner of India, including from celebrities Amitabh Bachchan, Priyadarshan and so on. Albeit the abounding slam, like Jamal of 'Slumdog Millionaire', the film won against all odds and triumphed with the prestigious BAFTA and Golden Globe awards.

Rahman's 'Jai Ho' and 'O Saya' is pitted against 'Down to Earth' from the animated film 'Wall –E'. Original musical score of the film 'Defiance' will give a tough competition for 'Slumdog Millionaire', says forecasters. Rahman bagging the BAFTA (British Academy of Film and Television Arts) and Golden Globe award for best musical score is believed to be a rehearsal for the Oscars by most of the Indian people.

Veteran Bengali Filmmaker Satyajit Ray's films made it to the nominations in the past and also Mira Nair's 'Salaam Bombay', a film made on slum kids was nominated too but didn't win the trophy. Bhanu Athaiya, was the last person from India to win the academy award for best costume design in the 1982 film, 'Gandhi' directed by a British filmmaker Richard Attenborough. Now, Danny Boyle has done the job and paved way for Indian talents to go global.

AR Rahman composed the musical score and no one knew the film would reach such heights to become a worldwide head turner. In a recent interview, Rahman said that when he first landed in the U.S., to receive the critics' guild award, the media gladly left him out of the picture. After winning the Golden Globe, he was admitted amidst the film crew. Later, in the BAFTA's, he became an iconic image for the western magazines and everyone wanted to feature the Indian who's been winning all the way.

Talent-wise Rahman sure stands tall and is unbeatable but is it destiny that lured the songster to this stage even though he had done even better compositions in the past. Was it the prophecy an astrologer foretold that he will go places at the age of 42? The big night for the west is now anticipated by the east and if we have winners from our side, the world's largest film consumer, India might commingle with the west to bring out world class movies.

We will know it once the awards are announced on the Oscar Night to be held at Los Angeles on 22nd February.

Let's keep our fingers crossed and wish the best of success for AR Rahman.

'Slumdog Millionaire' poised for Oscars glory

AFP - Sunday, February 22HOLLYWOOD (AFP) - - The final countdown to the 81st Academy Awards were underway here Saturday, with feel-good movie "Slumdog Millionaire" poised to romp home with the coveted best picture Oscar.

Less than 48 hours before the entertainment industry's most glamorous night of the year, workers were putting the finishing touches to their preparations at the Kodak Theater in the heart of Hollywood.

The build-up to this year's ceremony has been dominated by India-set rags-to-riches fable "Slumdog", which has dominated other awards shows and is considered the overwhelming favorite for the best picture statuette.

Although period drama "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button" will start the night with the most nominations, 13, compared to 10 for "Slumdog," experts say that British director Danny Boyle's film looks unstoppable.

"It would be the biggest upset in modern Oscars history to see 'Slumdog' lose," said Pete Hammond, a veteran awards season pundit and Maxim film critic.

"It hasn't stumbled once this awards season. It has had an unprecedented sweep. It's the equivalent of the perfect season in football or baseball."

Pundits say "Slumdog" has delighted audiences with its rags-to-riches plot about a Mumbai teaboy who rises out of poverty and enters a television quiz show to win millions and be reunited with the love of his life.

The against-the-odds triumph of the film's central character is mirrored by the movie's improbable march towards Oscars glory. Made for only 15 million dollars, the film features a cast of unknown actors and is partially subtitled.

The movie was also very nearly released straight to DVD in the United States last year, a move which would have ruled it out of Oscars contention.

British bookmakers William Hill have priced the film at 1/10, one the of the shortest price best picture contenders in history.

"It's always been our theory that at the end of the day Hollywood is about putting bums on seats and that this year, an uplifting feelgood movie like 'Slumdog' would be the clear favorite," spokesman Rupert Adams told AFP.

Other rivals in the best picture category are "Benjamin Button," political drama "Frost/Nixon," biopic "Milk" and Holocaust drama "The Reader."

With "Slumdog" and Boyle heavily favored to win best picture and director, pundits are looking to the acting honors to provide suspense when the Oscars begin at the Kodak Theater on Sunday from 5:30 pm (0130 GMT Monday).

Sean Penn, who plays a trailblazing gay politician in "Milk", and Kate Winslet, who plays a Nazi death camp guard in "The Reader" are the front-runners in the best actor and actress categories.

However Penn faces stiff competition from Mickey Rourke, who won last month's Golden Globes for playing a washed up prizefighter in "The Wrestler."

Winslet's hopes of a first Academy Award after missing out on five previous occasions are threatened by two-time Oscar-winner Meryl Streep, with Melissa Leo ("Frozen River") tipped as a dark horse.

In the supporting categories, late Australian actor Heath Ledger is poised to become only the second performer in history to win a posthumous Oscar, a year after his death from a drug overdose in New York.

Bookmakers have installed Ledger as the 1/50 favorite to win for his turn as the villainous Joker in Batman blockbuster "The Dark Knight."

In the supporting actress category, Penelope Cruz is favorite the first Spanish actress to win an Oscar for her performance in Woody Allen comedy "Vicky Cristina Barcelona."

The other element of surprise around Sunday's show is the new-look format being promised by organizers as they seek to bounce back from 2008 television viewing figures that were the worst in Oscars history.

Show producers have promised tweaks to the format for this year's event, even withholding the names of Oscars presenters in an effort to build hype.

"It's going to be a show that takes some bold risks," said Sid Ganis, president of the Academy of Motion Pictures and Sciences.

While organizers seek to put some sparkly into Sunday's show, the Oscars has not been able to shake off the recession blues ravaging the US economy.

Fewer parties have been scheduled and fashion experts are expecting a less showy tone during Sunday's red carpet catwalk.

New York, Feb 22 (IANS) An Oscar award would be a “great honour” and help do “bigger things”, says Indian music maestro A.R. Rahman, a hot favourite to take home a trophy for his music in “Slumdog Millionaire”.

“It would be a great honour,” Rahman told the New York Times in a telephone interview from Los Angeles, where he was preparing to perform at the ceremony.

“It would help me to do bigger things.”

Asked to elaborate, Rahman named “some Western directors he would like to work with”. “Baz Luhrmann… Ridley Scott. I’m a big fan of Ridley.”

The Times notes Rahman is “one of the most prolific and successful film composers in India”. He has three nominations for Danny Boyle’s “Slumdog Millionaire” - best original score and best original song, for “Jai Ho” and “O … Saya”, a collaboration with the Sri Lankan-British rapper M.I.A.

Rahman, 43, has already won a Golden Globe for best score for “Slumdog Millionaire”.

“I like to see a film and then start scoring it in my mind, while doing something unrelated,” the maestro said. “You just grasp a film and start working, and something unpredictable comes out from a third element. The mind, the more active it is, the more productive it is.”

Talking about his work on the most-talked about film of the recent times, Rahman said: “I kept three weeks aside. I moved to London and did the whole score there.”

David Novak, an ethnomusicologist at the Heyman Center for the Humanities at Columbia University, said Rahman is “sort of the Peter Gabriel of the Indian film industry”.

“He shifted things from a simple East-West mode to a multicultural, global mode, where India and its regional musics are part of a palette of sound from around the world,” Novak added.

Andrew Lloyd Weber, who worked with the composer for the West End musical “Bombay Dreams”, said, “I’ve long been impressed by his talent, and I’m so pleased that Hollywood has recognized it.”

But Rahman said he was yet to prepare his Oscar acceptance speech ready as he was busy meeting various directors and record labels in Los Angeles.
