I was surfing thro the channels this morning to watch the proceedings of the Satyam issue.
I was shocked to see channels prioritising on SRK getting an invitation for Golden Globe. They've easily forgotten another Indian who is competing for an award. Neither did they utter a word on Critics Choice award.. Wonder when they'l grow..

Mumbai, Jan 8 : The music album of the Hindi version of Danny Boyle directed Hollywood movie 'Slumdog Millionaire', titled 'Slumdog Crorepati' was recently released here.

Both the English and Hindi versions of the movie are now ready for all India release.

'Slumdog Millionaire' has already made news winning three top honours at the British Independent Film Awards.

It was a star-studded event at the JW Marriott Hotel here with Bollywood actor Anil Kapoor along with other fellow cast members present.

"It's a kind of role which I have never done before in my career. So it was very exciting. It has a lot of shades. Sometimes when you ask actors that what you think about the role, I can go on elaborating about it. But about this film, I can just say that it was great doing this role," said Anil Kapoor.

The music composed by A R Rahman is being touted as a great introduction to modern Indian and Bollywood music. According to Rahman, the film in itself is a masterpiece.

The soundtrack features various artistes, such as Suzanne D'Mello, Alka Yagnik, Ila Arun, Palakkad Sriram, Madhumitha, Sonu Nigam, Mahalakshmi Iyer, Alisha Chinai, Tanvi Shah and Sukhwinder Singh.

The story of 'Slumdog Crorepati' revolves round the life of an impoverished Indian teen named Jamal Malik, who becomes a contestant in the Hindi version of 'Who Wants to be A Millionaire?' and wins.

Since he is uneducated, his victory is suspected to be an instance of cheating. Those belonging to the clan of doubting Thomas deem it as one of proxy with embedded chips in his body to give the right answers in the contest!

Boyle is known for incorporating vibrant music in his films to capture the essence of each scene.

A R Rahman is reported to have done a wonderful job of portraying Jamal Malik's journey from the slums of Mumbai to the

Watched SDM today..

Easily this is one of the best films I've seen in my life. There were certain scenes which showed Mumbai/India in a bad note but that's reality.

Thalaivar's work is awesome and lifts the film to new hieghts. Its his music which transforms a low budget movie and gives a rich look to the film..

I wonder how such a crystal clear print with 5.1 recording is available in the market even before its Indian release.

[tscii:20a4c71d6f]Film review: Slumdog Millionaire
Jan 9 2009 by Gavin Allen, Western Mail

IT'S usually annoyingly easy to identify an Oscar contender – a worthy drama, epic romance or big name biopic – but Slumdog Millionaire is a film that could change everything.

It is a rare thing, a film as original as it is brilliant, so original in fact that it may just destroy and rebuild the way Hollywood interacts with overseas film industries in one virtuoso camera swoop.

The biggest problem this film faces will be getting sceptical audiences into the cinema, but once word of mouth kicks in the chances are Slumdog Millionaire will provide director Danny Boyle with the biggest hit of his career; yes, bigger and more influential than Trainspotting.

When we meet Jamal Malik (Dev Patel) he is in the contestant's chair on India's version of Who Wants To Be A Millionaire.

Overnight, with just one question left to answer, Jamal is brutally questioned by police who suspect him of cheating. How could an 18-year-old "slumdog" possibly have all the answers?

In custody, Jamal recounts his life story to prove each answer was provided by experience in a life where he was raised by older brother Salim (Madhur Mittal) after the boys lost their mother during a religious uprising.

The pair befriend orphan girl Latika (Freida Pinto) but fall into the clutches of child slave traders, only to escape to life on the teeming Mumbai streets. But there Salim falls into a life of violent crime under a gang lord who forces Latika into prostitution and then marriage.

Jamal dreams of having enough money to rescue the woman he loves and extricate all three from lives of hardship; could the TV show be his answer?

Slumdog Millionaire is no art film, neither is it a worthy cause to support, it's a legitimate emotional blockbuster; a tear-jerking love story, a harsh social drama and a heartwarming coming of age story.

More importantly this is the first real meshing of Hollywood and Bollywood film culture. It will be a huge hit with Indian and Western audiences and the combined potential box office revenues will send studios scrabbling to clone it and cash in.

The acting is pitch perfect, from Anil Kapoor's slimy TV host to Irffan Khan's sympathetic police sergeant via Mittal's hot-headed sibling and Pinto's stunning love interest, while Skins actor Dev Patel makes a noble hero.

Yet each of the three leads is played by three actors in varying stages of their youth and all the young performers display staggering maturity and natural charm, as they bring to life an awesome script by Simon Beaufoy (The Full Monty).

But Danny Boyle has to take most credit.

His masterful direction cohesively unites the disparate elements (humour, action, romance, drama) while realising it with kinetic visuals and a pulsatingly authentic score from AR Rahman.

In this centrifuge of originality and quality, it most recalls Sergio Leone's masterpiece Once Upon A Time In America, which is about as high a compliment as I can pay a director.

This is genuinely visionary filmmaking.

5 out of 5

Golden globes major social event for HWood. It is inside circle. So, I think only Best Director guaranteed. But, Rahman is poster child for Indian music, so he can get Best Composer despite the not so Jai Ho Ho song. (Rahman, please get more spontaniety and thump in your songs for Hollywood when you get there. "Juzt Beat it, Just do the beat it, pal.) Best movie will be a battle between Dark K or SlumD or Milk( either way it is Indianish winner - (Dark (Night Shyamalan)), Slum and Holy Cow. So, don't be disappointed. It is India's Golden Earlobes plus Olden Globes, something like that..... Since GG is about $$ marketing, and DK made money, they might like to make SM some money. Let us see. So, there is a possibility for 3 awards. Screenplay would be thrown because of the originality of it and indirect kudos to Swarup for his contribution. Oscar's is difficult to say, but it the biggest social for Hollywood, just a few Indians won't make a summer for them! So, let us hope Rahman and Danny Boyle make it atleast. They are very special human beings. and Good luck, slums (aah, a bye product of the glorious caste system of India is now making a name. Every dog has his day - cannot get better than this!)

" so he can get Best Composer despite the not so Jai Ho Ho song."

No, I don't think one gets best composer for the song (I found it okay, but I have a genuine weakness for the score). It'd be well deserved if he is nominated.

Regardless of what one thinks of such awards, you're tempted of supporting your favorites.

Rahman's Slumdog Millionaire song goes to Oscars
Friday, January 09, 2009 11:12 [IST]

A. R Rahman lost a dear friend and sound recordist H Sridhar days after 26/11. It has left the musical maestro shaken but not devastated. Without telling a soul, he left for the US to submit his Hindi song 'Jai Ho' from Slumdog Millionaire at the Oscars.. a song that actually belonged to Subhash Ghai!

The song has already been nominated for the 'New York Critics Choice Award', and the soundtrack has fetched Rahman the 'Los Angeles Critics Choice Award' for the best score. The soundtrack has just received a Golden Globe Nomination and the song is a hot favourite at the Oscars.

And to think that the song belonged to Subhash Ghai in Yuvvraaj. It's not just the 'Choli Ke Peeche Kya Hai' song that Subhash Ghai allowed the British director Danny Boyle and A. R. Rahman to use in Slumdog Millionaire. It now comes to light that Ghai also gave away an entire original song from his own Yuvvraaj to Slumdog Millionaire.

How did this bewildering barter of creativity happen? Says the song's writer Gulzar, "I had written a song called 'Aaja Aaja Shamiane Ke Taley, Zari Wale Neele Aasman Ke Taley' for Subhash Ghai's Yuvvraaj. But then for some reason Subhash felt he didn't need that song in the film. So Rahman suggested that we use the track in Slumdog Millionaire because it fitted perfectly. We asked Subhash and he readily agreed. I must say it was very generous of him. It's my first international project."

Subhash Ghai brushes off the compliment. "There's nothing generous about it. Give and take is an integral part of any creative field. Look at M F Husain Saab's generosity. He called me up all the way from Dubai to say he loved Yuvvraaj. After the battering that it got, his words came as balm to my soul, especially when Husain Saab said he saw the film twice and liked it even better the second time. I happily gave the 'Aaja Aaja' song to Rahman when he said that it was needed for Danny Boyle's film. I felt the song was slightly too soft and subtle for the aggressive character (Zayed Khan). I'm glad they could use it."

And now the song that Subhash Ghai so generously handed over to another film is being submitted for the Oscars. 'Aaja Aaja Shamiane Ke Taley' is being entered in for the Best Song Category at the Oscars.

Any regrets for giving over the song? "None at all. Every film and every song has its own destiny. That song was meant to be in Slumdog Millionaire. I'm just happy that a Hindi song is being noticed heard and hummed in the US by non-NRI audiences," says Ghai.

Speaking from the US, Rahman says, "I'm here for work. But I've to say the sudden death of my friend and my permanent sound recordist H Sridhar (who died of a cardiac arrest on December 1) has been a big blow for me. He was a close friend and professional associate for twenty years. He was not just a sound recordist but also a fantastic keyboards player. He revolutionalized sound recording. I am shattered? It's a personal and professional loss. But life goes on. It has to."

what a stupid article. their title is "blame it on the hype". what hype? the hype that the movie generated was due to the movie alone. there were no big directors, producers, actors, or even music director (ar rahman is a new name to the world). so then what hype? it doesnt get better than a movie advertising itself. slumdog is a perfect example of that. the movie started of small, released in a limited amount of theatres in UK. now owing to the brilliant movie, it has catapulted itself to one of the greatest in history. i hope someone complains to rediff about this. they have some of media's finest and intelligent reviewers/authors.

yes, a few of the child artists are from the slums :)
he was soo good :notworthy:

Its actually the kids playing Salim & Latika who r from slum. What a performance :notworthy: :notworthy:

They are naturals :D The young actors and middle aged actors except Latika were all convincing. I felt others, especially dev patel to be distinctly unindian in his expressions and the way he carries himself around. Definitely not the chaiwala we are used to seeing :)

I thought the acting was terrible except for young Jamal (Young Salim was strictly OK, and Young Latika had nothing to do.). Perhaps Boyle wanted a "Bressonian" (to borrow from Eq) performance, but certainly few actors could have done a lot better than seem superficial. But Surprisingly, the bolly cast of Anil kapoor, Irrfan khan, Saurabh Shukla, Ankur Vikal suited well!

[tscii:6fd2ec6248]Bollywood hails Rahman's Globes win

IANS | Monday, 12 January , 2009, 15:41

Bollywood hails Rahman for winning Golden

Globe Bollywood music director AR Rahman Monday became the first Indian to win the Golden Globe Award, for best original musical score in Danny Boyle's movie Slumdog Millionaire. The honour bestowed on the maestro has brought much cheer to the Indian film industry.

Special: Trace A R Rehman's musical journey | All about Slumdog Millionaire | Congratulate Rahman

"The Golden Globe is a coveted award and it is a rare honour for an Indian music director. By winning it, competing with composers from around the world, Rahman has not only proved his worth, but has also conveyed to the world that, given a chance, an Indian music director can deservedly vie with any composer in the world," fellow composer Anu Malik said.

Rahman won the prestigious award for his score in the song Jai Ho, for which Gulzar penned the lyrics. The song is a typical Rahman number and the composer stuck to his signature style while composing it.

Sukhwinder Singh, who has sung the song, said: "Rahman has churned out great songs even in the past but he did not get an award so I feel that he truly deserves this one. I am very happy for him and when he comes back to India, I will meet him. I'm sure he will definitely ask me, 'Are you happy?'. The song Jai Ho is a very naughty and playful number; it has a good combination of poetry and music and and I enjoyed singing it."

"The international recognition that Rahman has earned for himself makes every Indian proud. He deserves it more than anybody else for his wholehearted dedication to music. It's a rare honour. I congratulate Rahman," said director Aziz Mirza.

Slumdog Millionaire bagged four Golden Globe awards. Apart from Rahman, the movie won the awards - considered a precursor to the Oscars - for best motion picture, best screenplay and best director.

That Slumdog Millionaire will sweep the Golden Globe Awards was a foregone conclusion after critics from around the world, Hollywood in particular, hailed the film.

Most Indians expected Rahman, known for scoring soul-stirring music in Bollywood and other Indian films, to emerge victorious. And that was exactly what happened Sunday night, making the 43-year-old music composer the first Indian to bag a Golden Globe.

"We are very proud of Rahman. He is an internationally recognised music genius and Golden Globes is a significant win for the music fraternity in India too. Though I haven't worked with him as much as others, I admire him from a distance," said singer Shaan.

"Rahman is truly the king. He is one of the finest composers in the country. He has carried India's name on the global map and has achieved something, which no one from this country could do. He deserves every award that exists," singer-composer Shankar Mahadevan said.

Based on Vikas Swarup's novel Q & A, the film starring Dev Patel, Freida Pinto and Anil Kapoor, is releasing in India January 23.

Rahman got his first big break in Mani Ratnam's Roja and later composed music for many films in southern India. His first full-fledged Bollywood project was Ram Gopal Varma's hit Rangeela. Most of the songs, including Tanha Tanha and Hai Rama and Yaaro sun lo Zara, were chartbusters. After that there was no looking back for him.

Later, Rahman became a name to reckon with through his soulful compositions in Dil Se…, 1947 Earth, Taal, Lagaan, Guru, Rang De Basanti and Jodhaa Akbar.

Rahman not only won hearts in India, but also made a mark on the global music scene. He got his first international break when Andrew Lloyd Webber invited him to compose music for Broadway musical Bombay Dreams, which won him immense international fame. He also composed for the stage adaptation of JRR. Tolkien's Lord Of The Rings that premiered in Canada in 2006 and in London in 2007.

Rahman launched his first full-fledged orchestra last year. It has been named 'Global Music' and is the first homegrown orchestra.

After winning the Golden Globe, Rahman is looking forward to bagging an Oscar for his soundtrack for Slumdog Millionaire.

"For the people of India to get an Oscar is a big thing. So for their sake, more than mine, I hope my song Jai ho and my music score in Slumdog Millionaire win the Oscar," said Rahman, whose latest hit back home was Ghajini.

He is all set to enthral his fans with his upcoming projects "Delhi-6 and Blue.

‘It’s India’s honour’
...says A R Rahman who recently turned 43 and is the first Indian to win The Golden Globe Award. He spoke to Chennai Times before leaving for Los Angeles
SUBHASH K JHA Times News Network

You’re the first Indian musician to win The Golden Globe Award…
It’s an honour for India, not just for me. More to come, hopefully.
The Golden Globe is seen as a precursor to the Oscars...
Let’s hope so. I have my fingers crossed. When a film and my music get acceptance, it’s the equivalent of an Oscar for me. It’s a big thing for the people of India to get an Oscar. So, for their sake more than mine, I hope my song Jai Ho and my music score in Slumdog Millionaire (SM) win the Oscar.
Freida Pinto says, of the four Golden Globe nominations for Slumdog Millionaire, yours makes her the proudest...
That’s really sweet of her. I was in LA to have lunch with the panel members of the Oscars and for the promotion of SM. Some critics in the US say it’s one of the best films they’ve ever seen. It’s not just about my music, it’s the way director, Danny Boyle, has put the film together.
Please explain...
The throbbing pulse of Mumbai is superbly captured in the film. SM is about suffering, hope and redemption. If my music in SM has made an impact in the West, it’s because it’s projected effectively. Though some of the songs are in Hindi, nobody complained about them being boring or incomprehensible. Jai Ho, the song which has been nominated for The Golden Globe, O Saya… and Ringa Ringa… which are influenced by Choli Ke Peeche are, for them, in a foreign language, yet they loved it.
Were you in the US to lobby for the Oscar for Jai Ho?
It’s not about lobbying. It’s about letting the jury members meet me, get to know me and decide if the person behind the creation is worth voting for. As an artiste, I need to be recognised on a human level. So, I needed to go to Hollywood with my song Jai Ho. I met top Hollywood soundtrack composers like Hans Zimmer, Howard Shore and Danny Elfman.
And what did they have to say about your music?
They had genuine warm comments about my music. At first, I thought they were just being sweet and polite. You know, LA is a place where people in the entertainment industry say many things they don’t mean. So, I double-checked. And these big guns in Hollywood really meant it. I think they love the Mumbai that they’ve seen in
the film. And Danny has made terrific use of my music. The way he has mixed my songs, they’re full-on like a discotheque.
Has Mumbai’s image suffered a setback in the US after 26/11?
Everyone is a bit shaken. Security has been tightened in the US and I was subjected to it at every hotel that I went to. Everyone has to be more careful. There’s a little bit of negativity about what happened. But the way they look at India, our music and cinema is very positive.
You sound really upbeat...
The image of Mumbai is still intact. SM has promoted Mumbai tourism to a great extent. I don’t think any city in the world has been portrayed as vibrantly as Mumbai. I got the right vibes in LA. Many people, including Akon and Nelly Furtago, want to come to India to collaborate with our entertainment industry. We just need to carry it forward.
It’s believed you left for LA because of your dear friend’s death?
The sudden death of my friend and permanent sound recordist H Sridhar (who died of a cardiac arrest on December 1) has been a big blow to me. He was a close friend and professional associate for twenty years. He was not just a sound recordist but also a fantastic keyboard player. He revolutionised sound recording. Am I shattered? Yes, it’s a personal and professional loss. But life goes on. It has to.

Music director A R Rahman, who created history by becoming the first Indian to win the Golden Globe award for his score in 'Slumdog Millionaire' has dedicated his achievement to the country.

It has been really awesome for the past few months. Sachin winning a test match and dedicating it to Indians n terror victims. Danny Boyle wants to return to Mumbai

London (IANS): Danny Boyle, the British director of the award-winning film "Slumdog Millionaire", wants to return to Mumbai to make another film.

"I'd love to do a thriller there next - the energy is extraordinary," he told thelondonpaper.

"They call it Maximum City which is absolutely accurate: the problems they have there, the joys, the wonders, are absolutely maximum. It's a passionate, romantic city, and it loves a love story.

"And despite all that has happened there recently it is a city moving towards happiness. You have these incredible extremes but it feels like there's a destiny that binds it all together."

Boyle, whose film has just opened in cinemas across Britain to wide critical acclaim, told the London eveninger he was keeping his "feet on the ground" as far as Oscar expectations went.

"The town basically votes for its own in the end, you have to accept that and keep your feet on the ground. The value of it, of course, is just getting in the room; the platform it gives to a small film like this is remarkable.

"What I can tell you is it is better to be liked than disliked. I only ever thought we'd be at the back of the room waving, so it's nice to be at the front."

Boyle's 1996 film "Trainspotting" won an Oscar nomination for the best adapted screenplay but he said, "We should have know we weren't going to win, though. We were sat right at the back."

The British filmmaker said he had been thinking of filming writer Irvine Welsh's sequel to "Trainspotting" called "Porno".

"We want to do it when the actors look more middle-aged. The problem is they don't age quickly as the rest of us - it's that Dorian Gray thing," he added.

Asked what he would do if he won a million pounds, Boyle told the newspaper he would give it to "this guy called Raj who was first assistant director on the film ("Slumdog Millionaire") and works for Street Scools - schools in Mumbai that are on the streets."

"You'd have to do something like that wouldn't you."

And in all probability music would be by ARR again

I was terrified before Golden Globe awards: Rahman

Music maestro A R Rahman, who scripted history by becoming the first Indian to get the Golden Globe honour for 'Slumdog Millionaire' has revealed that he was terrified just before the awards as he did not want to disappoint the one billion Indians.

LOS ANGELES: Music maestro A R Rahman, who scripted history by becoming the first Indian to get the Golden Globe honour for 'Slumdog Millionaire' has revealed that he was terrified just before the awards as he did not want to disappoint the one billion Indians.

"Somewhere, I think I was terrified yesterday. I didn't want to let down a billion people there and say ohh!," the 43-year-old musician said.

Rahman bagged the Golden Globe award for Best Original Music Score for 'Slumdog Millionaire', a rags-to-riches story of a Mumbai slumdweller.

Directed by British filmmaker Danny Boyle, the film bagged four prestigious awards including the Best Motion Picture.

Rahman said his award is dedicated to one billion Indians.

"I think more than what if I had wanted this...for me it is an award but for Indians it is a great deal. I feel proud about it. After all those low in the last couple of months it is great to see all the happiness and positivity," the musician said referring to the recent terror attacks on Mumbai.

"It is great. I am so excited I have never been so excited for any other award," he said in an interview to NDTV.

Rahman also revealed that he was uncertain about taking up the project initially due to his busy schedule and stopped short of saying no.

"I was so busy if it was just half beat away from me I would have said no but something told me that it was great to work with such a legendary director like Danny Boyle," he said.

The "Mozart from Madras" is ready for his close up after winning a
Golden Globe for "Slumdog Millionaire. "

By Jason Overdorf - GlobalPost
Published: January 12, 2009 08:44 ET
Updated: January 12, 2009 12:41 ET

NEW DELHI — Calling India's A.R. Rahman — who won a Golden Globe
award for the score of "Slumdog Millionaire" last night — the best
composer you've never heard of is beyond understatement.

Known locally as "the Mozart from Madras," Rahman has sold over 200
million albums worldwide: more than Madonna and Britney Spears
combined.

But the truth of the matter is you probably can't hum one of his
songs. That's about to change.

"There are a number of gifts that single [Rahman] out as special. His
handling of rhythmical elements is astonishing and his solutions very
South Indian," said Ken Hunt, one of the authors of the upcoming
third edition of "The Rough Guide to World Music." "His melodies are
catchy, clever and reveal a command of theatrical music techniques,"
Hunt adds. "He was pretty much ready for the big time from the get-
go."

And now the big time is ready for him. With a multicultural
soundtrack unlike anything he's ever done for Bollywood, the 43-year-
old composer-singer- producer might be on his way to becoming
America's hottest new hand on the mixing board. Indian-origin DJs in
New York and London have been saying it for years, but now it just
may be true. Brown is the new black.

As far as Indians are concerned, it's about time. Audiences here,
where "Slumdog Millionaire" has not yet been released, have been
overjoyed by the film's surprise victories at the Critics' Choice and
Golden Globe awards. Here's one tribute:

Only three Indian films ever have been nominated for an Oscar in the
foreign language category, "Mother India" (1957), "Salaam
Bombay!" (1988) and "Lagaan" (2001). None took home the prize.

So even though "Slumdog" — written by Simon Beaufoy and directed by
Danny Boyle — is not technically an Indian production, or even a
Bollywood-style film, the accolades for Rahman have provided some
validation for the larger-than- life musicals that Indians often
simply call "our films."

Rahman, who started to learn the piano at the age of 4, is something
of a Slumdog Millionaire himself. After his father died, he was
forced to start work as a keyboard player to support his family at
just 11 years old. He later dropped out of high school to pursue his
music career. About that same time, he converted from Hinduism to
Islam, a brave choice in a country where Muslims often face
persecution. But he says Islam "set [him] free."

From his humble beginnings, Rahman swiftly became one of Bollywood's
biggest money spinners — a kind of Indian Quincy Jones — virtually
owning the industry for more than a decade. His hits, like Chaiya
Chaiya, Chhoti Si Asha and Thee Thee, have as much enduring appeal as
any Beatles standard, and not only for Bollywood fans. "A.R. Rahman
is nothing short of a melodic genius," Andrew Lloyd Webber has said.
"I admire his unique sense of harmony, his staggering rhythms and his
melodies that take an unexpected twist that no Western composer would
dream of."

Bollywood insiders know that kind of staggering genius can make or
break a film in India. "In Indian cinema, the music is such an
important part of it that music can save a mediocre film," says film
critic Jai Arjun Singh. "With Rahman, it happens frequently."

That's not an overstatement. Marketers use song-and-dance numbers
from movies for the trailers, videos on Channel V and MTV drive
repeat business, and soundtrack sales and music video rights account
for a significant part of the picture's revenue.

That's why Indian producers swear by him. "He has demonstrated fusion
of west and east more than most musicians over the world," said
Ronnie Screwvala, chief executive of UTV Motion Pictures, one of
India's most successful film production companies. "All our tent pole
[productions] have always been Rahman [films]—from Swades to Rang De
Basanti to Jodha Akhbar and Delhi 6."

Nevertheless, though he performed with Michael Jackson and wrote the
music for Webber's Broadway musical Bombay Dreams and the stage
production of the Lord of the Rings, Rahman was virtually unknown to
Western fans until last night.

Now he has to be considered a frontrunner for an Oscar, and a raft of
offers from record companies and producers in the U.S. music industry.

Here comes the close up.

Bollywood hails Rahman

Rajeev Menon --- It's a great thing to have happened. And it has opened doors to Indian film music and Indian films to the western world. Earlier too, there were people like Mira Nayar and Deepa Mehta, who got international recognition. But what is remarkable here is that, here's a guy who has been brought up here, working here, practising here, and doing what he's doing regularly . And he's competed with the world and won it! It's given a lot of confidence to others. Rahman is home-grown, humble and embodies all that we love to see in a human and a celebrity . There is humility not just in him ,but in his music too. He keeps doors open for all kinds of music people, to walk in and knock at his door.

P C Sreeram --- I was in the Mumbai airport when I saw it in the news. I know him from his jingle-days. He was so focussed in his wo rk , a n d used to work late in the nights. It's amazing the way he has evolved. He is a man of very few words, his work speaks for him. Now with India going global, his achievement is one more major step towards it. He has given a new sound to the world.

Kartik Raja -- Rahman's victory is a lesson in life for all Indians. That nothing is impossible, if you put your mind to it.

Sivamani -- My feeling not only echoes my happiness, but India's. I'm extremely delighted that he has won the award,I'm not sure which sequence of mine has been used for Slumdog Millionaire, but playing for him is always a delight.

Steeve Vatz -- I'm proud to be associated with him,Golden Globe is not something just anyone can get. And I hope he goes all the way to win the Oscar. Generally we believe that no one from India can make it to the academy awards. But with Rahman, we have a loud voice.

Darbuka Shiva (Percussionist) --- I haven't worked with him yet. But, yes, I'm a fan. Shiva that the maestro has marked out a clear-cut path for other musicians like him, by showing that people from India can reach a high pedestal. "It's such a big encouragement for all of us," he observes. "I've listened to the score. Good grooves, good rhythms, it is mind blowing.

Sreenivas (singer, composer) --- It's absolutely overwhelming. .And the Oscars are just a step awayRahman is the ideal combination of a genius musician and a fantastic human being.

Trilok and Sharada (Ad film makers) --- When we heard the news, we sent a message to Rahman 'You deserve what you got, and nobody can take it away from you.'. We have known him years before Roja happened to him. In fact, we took director Mani Ratnam across to Rahman and told Mani, and he was then signed for Roja. He is the most wonderful guy I've met. Nothing has changed then or now. He was brilliant then, he is brilliant now, and he always will be brilliant. His mother is the most important person for all of us. She has always been there as a pillar of moral support and strength, for him, and for all of us too. We feel so proud of his achievement!

Rahman's Mother : My son looked so tall, holding his own among all those foreigners.[ Deccan,Chennai]

Rakesh Mehra : Remove the music, the film(sdm) would lose its energy. Although set in poverty slumdog talks about hope. Rahman is the first star after satyajit ray to have done us proud. We have to celebrate this moment-we should not lose it by saying it is a british film. Only cynics will say such things. [TOI,Chennai]

Parsoon Joshi - I'm Thrilled. Many years ago, Rahman showed us there's nothing like south indian or north indian music. Today, He's proved there's no difference between the East and the West.Good work is recognised everywhere.[ TOI,Chennai]

Subash Ghai : I was sure Rahman would win an oscar. His ability to fuse Indian and western music is magical, it touches even the soul of a child.[TOI,Chennai]

Ashutosh Gowerieker : I love the background music--It's electric , captivating abd brings out the dilemma of the characters.[ TOI,Chennai]

Vishal Dadlani - His confluence of Indian and Western sounds is sure to go global now.The world had to wake up to the talent that this man has. It was inevitable. To have what are essentially Indian songs and sounds in an English film speaks volumes of the confluence in Rahman's music,When you see it in the film, it dawns that the music is neither Indian nor Western, and that I think is the key to making it global. He has managed to merge the two without losing out on the magic. [Reuters]

Kollywood : All from Deccan Chr

Ajith[Actor] - I am for for A.R Rahman who has made all of us proud. I wish him and his family all success and prosperity for his future acheivments.

Madhavan[Actor] - After i heard the news, I was very happy and felt really proud. I have done three films with him and it has been great. All his works till date have been outstanding and I think this win would definetly encourage other indian musicians to explore further though a rahman like person is yet to enter the indian music industry.

Shruti Hasan[musician] - I am very excited and it's a really proud moment for artistes in india.Ofcourse it's not the most important thing to prove anything outside the country, but he's done the both and that's great.

Vidyasagar[Music director] - Like everything 'first' has its own value. A.R Rahman being the first indian has made all indians proud. I am extremley happy that someone from our faternity has won this prestigeous award. I wish him all the very best in life.

Suchitra[RJ&Singer] - These are such bleak, low times with the recession, essential supplies under thread, satyam collapsing that this news comes as a beacon of light and not just a ray. Rahman is a phenomenon that people all over the globe will now get to experience and enjoy. We are just luck that he lives a few streets away.

Blaaze : A.R Rahman is a blessing to the music industry and also to all of us.It was a great experience to work with him on Sdm. All my respect for the one in a billion

Chinmayee - A.R Rahman has been a number one musician for so many years. This is just added to the glory. Now I am just waiting for oscars.

GV Prakash : When I realised he is the first indian to win this award, it made me even more proud of being an indian

Naresh Iyer - He has always been a path breaker from the start. This is yet another example. I feel this is just the beginning. Undoubtedly He has made all of us proud. I really feel honoured to have worked with him.

Rahman might have refused Slumdog Millionaire

Music maestro A R Rahman, the first Indian to win a Golden Globe, was very nervous at the award ceremony as he did not want to let down a billion people back home in India.

In an exclusive interview to NDTV's Sarah Jacob, Rahman says that Slumdog Millionaire

NDTV: You've worked with Shekhar Kapoor in Elizabeth, Andrew Lloyd Webber in Bombay Dreams, you have performed with Michael Jackson, you also wrote the music for the threatre production of The Lord of the Rings. After all these international projects, what does winning a Golden Globe mean to you?

A R Rahman: For me it's an award, but for all Indians it's a great deal. I was so terrified yesterday at the award ceremony. I didn't want to let down a billion of people back home. So, it was great when I received it, I was very excited. I've never been so excited about any other award before.

NDTV: How did you celebrate your win? We've seen champagne bottles and chocolates all over your room.

A R Rahman: I don't drink unfortunately, but there were a lot of champagne bottles sent to me by my friends back home. But the excitement was more in India. Forty-four channels were broadcasting simultaneously. I'm feeling proud about it. Last couple of months have been very sad, it's great to see people happy.

NDTV: How did you get involved with Slumdog Millionaire? What attracted you to this project?

A R Rahman: I don't know. I might have said no to the project, but something inside me said that it would be a great thing to work on.

Mira Nair: "The most innocent and lovely image on American television in years was the sight of our beloved A.R. Rahman on tiptoe hugging a loved one before he got the Golden Globe. How wonderful to see this rush of talent being recognized. Go, Slumdog!"

Aishwarya Rai Bachchan: "This is absolutely fantastic news. Superb in the superlative. Heartiest congratulations to him. He's truly blessed. An incredible talent, a wonderful soul and has always been and will be the pride of our country."

Pritam Chakraborty: "Wow ...I was kind of expecting this. Congratulations to him. It's a proud moment for any Indian especially the music fraternity. I pray that it's just the beginning for him."

Amitabh Bachchan: "Congratulations. A reward most deserving."

Abhishek Bachchan: "What a glorious moment for him. He continues to make us proud. I'm very lucky to have worked with him in Yuva, Guru and Delhi 6. My congratulations to him."

Gulzar: "It's the horse that has won the race. The one riding the horse was Rahman. My lyrics for 'Jai Ho' were just the lagaam for the horse. Rahman has always been a clutter-breaker. He broke the antara-mukhda-antara (stanza-intro-stanza) mould in Hindi film songs. Now he has broken into the international arena. I'm working with him on the new Mani Ratnam project Raavan. As always it's a pleasure. All I can say for Rahman is, Jai Ho."

Bappi Lahiri: "It's a great honour for Bollywood. We're all proud of A R Rahman. God bless him."

Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra: "I guess on the way to the Oscars he has picked up a Golden Globe. The best thing about his music in Slumdog Millionaire (SD) is that his work in the film is so revolutionary and potent, that he made the jury's job easier. God bless Rahman for bringing India back on the cultural world-map. This will pave the way for bigger things from him and from our country."

Javed Akhtar: "I'm thrilled happy and proud, but not at all surprised. It's inevitable for a genius like Rahman to get international acclaim."

Shekhar Ravjiani: "A. R. Rahman is a genius. The music of SM is outstanding. It deserves every award on this planet. I'm extremely happy for him."

Udit Narayan: "I've had the singular pleasure of working with A. R. Rahman many times. In fact I had sung for the last India-based film Lagaan that had his music. He's a fine human being and composer. I always say good things happen to good people. This honour that he has brought to the country proves it. Today when I have cut down on my singing I realize he's one of the composers I'd want to sing for even if I stopped singing."

Ashutosh Gowarikar: "In one word he is fan-tas-tic! He's a trailblazer. I'm so very proud of him, too thrilled! And his speech at the Golden Globe ceremonies was superb, short and sweet full of gratitude for his fans. Wow! I'll exhale only when I meet him."

Sunidhi Chauhan: "When I heard Rahman saab had won a Golden Globe it didn't register for a while. It took me time to understand what he has done. I'm too, too happy to say anything. I haven't sung too many songs from him. Recently, I sang a Hindi song for him in an English-language film. Singing an A.R Rahman composition is a privilege. I'm glad the West is realizing his worth."

Shreya Ghoshal: "I'm extremely happy and thrilled to hear this. It's a huge achievement. I'm very proud of Rahman sir. This is just the beginning for him."

Anu Malik: "I'm not surprised. Such talent comes once in a lifetime. I'm in London and I caught the film and its music. It's terrific. A great day for our great country. A R Rahman is a genius. I'm sure he's going to get an Oscar now. I salute A R Rahman. Mark my words. Next month Rahman will also get the Oscar for SM. It is brilliant. I'm so happy for him. With the Oscar coming to Rahman the Indian music industry would've come a long way."

Farhan Akhtar: "I'm very happy for him. The recognition is truly deserved. Congratulations to Rahman and Danny Boyle."

Vishal Bhardwaj: "Things just won't stop here for Rahman. The genius shall now bring an Oscar for us. Insha Allah."

Aditya Narayan: "It's incredible! He's the first Indian artiste to be working internationally at such a high level. I've had the pleasure of singing for him when I was a child in Taal. Of course now everyone will say he had it in him. Here's one artiste who just does his work, and wastes no time in publicity gimmicks. I think India is just getting ready for international recognition."

Bipasha Basu: "He's an absolute genius. He deserves every award. And the applause he's getting globally is richly deserved. I feel immense pride."

Anand Raj Anand: "He deserves it. He's the only music director who got opportunities to work in terrific banners and super-talented directors. I wish him many many more achievements."

Sameer Anjaan: "It's a proud moment for every Indian. I'm lucky to have worked with him. He deserves much more."

Aadesh Shrivastava: "Bahut garv hota hai apne desh ke prati. Jai Hind."

Himesh Reshammiya: "He deserves it. He's my favourite."

Ameesha: "Rahman is a modern-day Mozart. A complete genius. I wish him the Oscar next."

Kunal Ganjawala: "This is just the beginning of many more international awards to come for Rahman."

KK (singer): "He deserves it. Glad he brought it for us. He's someone who understands music and what it does for our soul. Truly Indian too. God bless him .This is just the beginning."

Irrfan Khan: "Rahman ki jai ho aur aage Indian cinema ki bhi jai ho. I'm part of SM and meri bhi jai ho."

A.R. Rahman, had a hero's welcome at Chennai airport on Pongal day (Jan 14) after winning the prestigious Golden Globe award for original music score for Slumdog Millionaire.

Rahman reached Chennai from Frankfurt by a Lufthansa aircraft during the early hours of Wednesday and a huge gathering was there to receive him including 100 artistes performing in the ongoing Chennai Sangamam.

From the airport, a visibly tired Rahman headed straight to his house in Samiar Madam, Kodambakkam and reached there by 2.30am.

The 43-year-old man, who has captured the imagination of a nation of a billion people and has taken Indian music to dizzy eights refused to agree that he was the best musician in the country. He said: "In fact, there are greater musicians in the world than me. I am very happy and I dedicate this award to my country".

Later he met the media at his house and said: "Personally the award means nothing to me. I don't think that Slumdog Millionaire which fetched me the Golden Globe was my best album in the last 16 years. But I thought that I should get it for India. It was worrying me that if I don't get it, I will be letting down millions of people. So when I got it, I was very happy."

Rahman also confessed that his wife Saira helped him to pick an Armani Suit in Thalinad which he wore at the Gloden Globe awards. Slumdog Millionaire is expected to release in India on Jan 23 and he concluded saying: "For me, this film is a dedication to H.Sridhar my sound engineer, who was like a brother, who passed away in December".

ARR has been nominated in the music category of the BAFTA (British Academy Film Awards) awards. I guess the BAFTAs are the British version of the Oscars. Another feather in ARRs hat if he wins this one. Being nominated is a great achievement in itself though!

So when I got it, I was very happy."

yes, SDM is a terrific album with a liberal dosage of many genres......i think the westerners found it as a unique experience of listening to a fusion of many cultures yet remarkably identifiable to each one of them 8-)

Well it's not the best for US because we're kinda used to it. But for the Westerner's it's something totally different. How often do they have a song like Jai Ho in a movie? or just the background score in general. It's a different experience for them.

I saw the movie last night and I am mighty disappointed with the movie. In my opinion the director could have used Rahman much better and I hope that Rahman starts working with other god directors of hollywood. If he gets oscar nod - he should consider himself blessed as this film was not the right material with scope for music. The film was worser than what the 'new and mature' Bollywood is making. Anyways, post The Dark Knight, hollywood has stagnated creatively and a fresh talent like Rahman can stir things up in interesting ways. I also hope that he gets called to do other movies than just ones 'based in India'.

The mega event is being organized by the end of this month to felicitate A R Rahman for winning the coveted Golden Globe Award for Slumdog Millionaire, a very old Indian concept of rag to riches story.

Rahman, who described the experience of working in Slumdog Millionaire, said it was like being in a holiday while working for the movie. I had been to London with my children. It was fun.'

Rahman is confident that once the film is released in India, it would change the way films are being made here.

Every post need not convey any point to others. I feel PERSONALLY sad for certain movies not winning. period. I feel sad when creativity of different kind is not recognised. Celebrating sdm's victory is individual decision, and no shakthiprabha's point or ocmment should be waited upon.

If u wanna know the truth, YES, irrespective of the music, or its MD, I would have felt sad for 'one-among-million' story winning rather than 'one-in-a-million" story.

I respect each individual for their indepedant contribution, their success or failure has nothing to with the other aspects of movie In my personal view.

didnt mean to gang up on you or anything... you should understand that there are people here who love ARR and the movie SDM, so you should expect them to kind of gang up on you when you comment like that... by all means you have the rite to have your say...

i dont want to start an argument, because i think the movie was
brilliant... we should also remember that not winning awards dont really make the move bad either... i do understand your point of view that there are other good stuff that have missed the limelight..

i personally love movies that tell you what its about at the beginning.. and then go on to tell you how it happened... SDM tells the story amazingly well... other examples (kill bill, momemto - just off the top of my head)

you have all the right to your own opinion... but my humble request is for you is to take a look at the movie... and then tell us what you think of it... :)

Cool! Neither am I here to argue :)
not definitely before watching the movie.

Cindrella approach of the sdm actually did put me off a bit. It is quite fine to take a street child and his lifestyle, ( again not too new a concept, i know its the way of story telling which matters) what put me off was, the MILLIONAIRE part of it, somewhere the game shows and winning a grand amount all that was too fairy talish probability of which is faint. That is why this probably I felt movie did not hit upon the bare truth.

More I say, trap is waiting to catch me. Unfortunately I dont belong to the lucky lot who get the oppor to watch movies in theatre. Atleast not now.

So less I say, better it is. Esp since I did not watch the movie.

and please get it clear ARR has nothing to do with child becoming a millionaire or my mild dissapointment with the story. I am sure he scored music well and his award would have been much deserving one.

its about hope, its all about hope... that even if you go through hell there is light at the end of the tunnel... in this case the light was amazing...big bright and amazing... again its about hope...

everything about a movie dosent have to be realistic, it depends on how the unrealistic bit was used and for what purpose. in this case it was used to give an amazing message... that the city Mumbai can be a fairy tale.. amazing story telling i thought..

SDM contained lots of very good messages.. my fav i thought was that even a person from the foulest background can gain knowladge, he dosent have to be thought by anyone, Mumbai will teach him.. i am a Sri Lankan and i KNOW its the same with Colombo

i think you should watch the movie, for you to have a better understanding...

[tscii:2ebc201489]ஏ.

Danny boyle has not shown anything that is fictious.. He has shown the dark side of the most celebrated city of India.. Ppl who've visited places like Dharavi wont criticize the film. I dont find anything wrong with the film, irrespective of who the MD is.. I would suggest ppl to watch the movies before commenting..

I saw the movie and would go out on one limb to say that there have been movies that have shown Indian slums/Indian negative side in a far more striking and sordid manner and I have seen my share of them and have understood and felt them. This movie is different - This movie irrespective of slums or no slums - Bombay or Rio De janeiro - it is one of the weakest screenplays to have ever come out for a hollywood movie and what the heck - even bollywood movies of the past year have been better than this one.
The chase by the cops of the children in the slums inspired by the awesome sequence in 'Black Friday', starts the silly tone for the movie. Right from there - it is not showing India's dark side - it is showing Indians as Idiots and bigots. not one character save the 'Forrest Gump'ish hero is shown to be of anything worthy.
Again - that part of my comment is subjective, but purely going by merits - this movie is one of the most overhyped piece of cinema. That doesn't mean that Rahman's achievments are in doubt - just that the movie in which he gave his best for hollywood is not as worthy as it is made out to be . Striking a positive note - film critics and makers who saw Delhi -6 are ecstatic and are saying that it is way better than RDB. So Slumdog or not ARR's fans and film fans in India have more reasons to cheer than this movie.
The impact of this movie -- We have to wait and see if Indian films, films with songs will now be patronized and spread in the west. Sitting in USA, I hope now that good Indian films will get better theatres and more shows in the weekends for huge fans who are thirsting to see good Indian movies outside.

That is why this probably I felt movie did not hit upon the bare truth.

its about hope, its all about hope... that even if you go through hell there is light at the end of the tunnel... in this case the light was amazing...big bright and amazing... again its about hope...

everything about a movie dosent have to be realistic, it depends on how the unrealistic bit was used and for what purpose. in this case it was used to give an amazing message... that the city Mumbai can be a fairy tale.. amazing story telling i thought..

SDM contained lots of very good messages.. my fav i thought was that even a person from the foulest background can gain knowladge, he dosent have to be thought by anyone, Mumbai will teach him.. i am a Sri Lankan and i KNOW its the same with Colombo

i think you should watch the movie, for you to have a better understanding...

hehe

I am yet to come across a fairy tale like this one my friend. The gaps in fairy tales are bridged by magic and miracles - here it is bridged by .. well.. nothing. We are supposed to imagine everything and there is no bloody clue.. perhaps it is too intelligent for someone lame like me.

SPOILER ALERT!!!!! Dont read further if your haven't watched the movie

bad it already is to be born in the slums... and then to see the horrors like his mother being killed and being caught by some guy who uses kids for his own benefits... basically to have a childhood as bad as it can get... even the only person who meant something to him kept moving away from his grasp every time it seamed like she was there... none of this was his fault :(

to have a childhood like that...

and to rise to win a million to win the love of his life back... seems like the horrors of his life was meant for some reason... seems like a fairy tale to me...

this is my opinion... and mine only... i think a movie should give room for the viewer to imagine things... to make up his/her own mind about things... not everything should be spoon fed to the audience... that would make the it boring...

It was a pretty good movie. Very entertaining!

But what would people from the world think of India after watching such a film...? I really enjoyed the movie but I don't know what to think about the image of India that has been presented: slums, religious fanatics, child abuse, red light area, gangsters, police torture, etc.

I don't mean to say that all of it is untrue... but just sad that the bad side of India has been showcased to such a popularity.

The funny thing is that when our own do such films (Mahanadi comes to my mind) I do not ask myself such questions...

This album is not best of ARR how come he won Golden Globe!!!

He should have got it for WARRIORS OF HEAVEN AND EARTH it was terrific!!!!

Well it's not the best for US because we're kinda used to it. But for the Westerner's it's something totally different. How often do they have a song like Jai Ho in a movie? or just the background score in general. It's a different experience for them.

For once u've spoken sensibly :poke: :poke:

ARR's music is not "USED" to kind of stuff. I realized it a bit late coz his music is something terrific and innovative rather than repetitive stuff like many other tamil MDs barring Yuvan.

Only one place i want ARR to outshine others too would be DAPANKUTHU, he can make a rocking number fusioning western n dapankuthu

yes i dunno why arr is abandoning this wonderful style. he did do some terrific folk dance numbers such as chenthamil naatu, nee kattum selai but i guess those rnt considered dapankuthu? please arr, do a dapankuthu so we get to hear ur songs more often in parties. :)

[tscii:e0d33faaf4]Slumdog Millionaire in Tamil!

By Moviebuzz | Wednesday, 21 January , 2009, 11:09

The most talked about film of the decade Danny Boyle’s Slumdog Millionaire is going to be dubbed into Tamil and is likely to be titled Naanum Kodiswaran (I’m also a millionaire)!

Famous voices from Kollywood will be used for the Tamil dubbing. The film which won four Golden Globes, including Best Music Score for A.R Rahman has whipped up mass hysteria in Tamilnadu. And the buzz that Rahman will be the first Indian likely to get this years Oscar for his musical score in the film has made it red hot in the trade.

The English version of the film will be having a red carpet premiere at Sathyam Cinemas on January 22, Thursday night with some celebrities attending. Already the advance booking in five Chennai screens is astonishing. Please note only the English version is releasing and that too only in Chennai in Tamilnadu!

The dubbing rights of the film have been purchased by a local film producer for a rumoured Rs 70 lakhs (a record prize for an off-beat film). Since there is so much hype and curiosity around the film, the Tamil version is expected to do well in a state where only action or special effects English films do decent business.

According to Sunil Narvekar of Chayalakshmi Creations who are distributing the English version of the film on behalf of 20th Century Fox in the state: " The buzz on SM is big and since Rahman is well known and a phenomenon, there is a lot of inquiries coming from interior Tamil Nadu. There is romance, song, dance, and drama, typical Indian elements which will work with our audiences."

What made you zero in on A.R.Rahman and how did his music carry the film forward?
Danny Boyle: I had the privilege of working with that man 'A.R.Rahman'! I've been travelling the U.S and the U.K and telling people how famous this man is. He has a tiny little studio in Tufnell Park in London. We go out in lunch time to get a break from the music. We are walking along the road and somebody would spot him, ignore the traffic, come near him and tell him - "Is that you? Are you A.R.Rahman?" The joy of people here in music is something I love more than anything. I used to have a driver named Harish who didn't speak much English but used to play all the Hindi songs in my car. It was him who introduced me to all the Bollywood songs. Slumdog Millionaire is a very small film but because of A.R.Rahman, Anil Kapoor and Irrfan Khan, the film boasts of a biggie. A.R created this fusion of hip-hop, disco, RnB and the world music which was phenomenal. One of the biggest buzzes for me was that last week, his album went to number 1 in the iTunes album chart. That's not the soundtrack chart, it's an album chart . Normally, you'd find Beyonce and Rihana to be there. A.R.Rahman was up there, could you believe it? I'd also like to thank Shekhar Kapoor for his contribution towards the film. http://movies.indiainfo.com/2009/01/22/0901221232_chat_with_slumdog_cast_and_crew.html

Call for ban on Slumgdog Millionaire

The Goa [Images] unit of a Hindu organisation has demanded a ban on the release of Slumdog Millionaire [Images], saying the award-winning film hurts the religious sentiments of the majority community.

Hindu Janjagruti Samiti (HJS) will approach various governments, including that in Goa, insisting the movie should not be released, Jayesh Thali, state spokesman of the group, told PTI in Panaji on Thursday. There were a few scenes in the movie that denigrated Lord Ram, he alleged.

Thali said a HJS delegation had met Central Board of Film Certification officials in Mumbai [Images], demanding a ban on the film which is slated for release on Friday. Slumdog Millionaire, which tells the rags-to-riches tale of an orphan from a Mumbai slum, won four Golden Globe [Images] awards, including one for music composer A R Rahman.

Maddy am surprised you believed orkut when rahman's score has the most precursors to an oscar compared to other shortlisted composers which is a sure shoe-in.

I want to see him perform O saya live. The song has this addictive rhythm which is bound to sway audiences.
