Let's pick some videos available on the web of some evergreen classics of IR and discuss.
To start with, here's 'poovizhi vAsalil yAradi vandhadhu kiLiyE, kiLiye' from Deepam. (Sung by KJY/SJ)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BePtCZrCOLg&feature=related
I remember reading in the classic TFMpage of a DF'er's post claiming "only songs of pre-IR have longevity and IR could not produce one song such as...(a list of songs)'. And unfortunately for him he listed this song in his list and I remember ridiculing him that even one of his samples is IR's:-)
What an energy and excellent singing - fortunately, despite Vijayakumar's attempts to kill it on visuals, Sujatha saves it. (And Sujatha is IR's first heroine, i.e. the annakkiLi:-) ) Any time I watch a movie featuring her, I have this feeling that she is not a typical "cinema" actress - feels like someone who lives in your street / colony - Someone who does not belong in this field - EdhO thavaRudhalA vandhutta mAdhiri thONum...

rs, those comments under the youtube video are really interesting to read:-)
And someone was talking in another thread that it wasn't a good climax! After 2 decades, people are still talking about it (though this wasn't as big a success in Hindi like in Thamizh).
poongAtRu pudhidhAnadhu didn't have the 'kazhudhai' scene:-) I think BM took away the 'bharatha nAtyam' scene in Thamizh and replaced with 'kazhudhai':-))

Usha,
Superb selections both. Excellent bass guitar, as you say. I somehow feel that an already inspired Illayaraja gets even more inspired when he goes to Mallu land.

Lovely songs again Usha. Whenever someone says that Raja is not a force now, I direct them to 'Kaiyeta'. Amazing song. 'Thazvaram' is another song that I listen to regularly.

urukulai godavari is just way too elegant a song. stunning! i am listening for the 4th day running, i can remember the number of songs i've listened this long, but this song beats them all i think
in malayalam it is different emphasis than in Telugu and Kannada and tamil and hindi different. how can a composer straddle different idioms in such style and grace?
"karugi poyanu karpoora veenalaa" is another prized discovery. thanks!

Natha,
You are right. What fascinates lot of people is how Raja can get the flavour of that land in his songs. There is a different flavor for Telugu songs and for Malayalam songs it is completely different. I was listening to 'Marakudaiyal' (Manasinnakare) yesterday and the feel is so much Malayalam. Amazing.
Another thing about Raja is in all these languages he created original songs most of the time. In earlier days, MDs used to just transpose their popular songs in one language to another. Raja creates new ones and therein lies the difference.
The 7 set CDs of Telugu films of Raja that Aditya Audio releases is a boon to everyone.

In an interview in malaiyalam tv show.
IR told to one ques that
"If u have radio, u did not get the station.
When u tune the station, u will get it.
Like that, in the atomosphere, already
sounds are there.
When i sit to compose, i am tuned and got
the sound.
after tat, i write and give it to you...
I am stunned by this reply.
He always told, nothing new i gave it to you.
Already they are in the world.
This time only i got his View about himself.

Following the links in YouTube I saw the 'Sye Chindye' song of 'Anthapuram'. Again shows how Raja adapts himself to a particular language. It is very clear that this song could only be in Telugu. Well picturised too.

IMHO, Balu Mahendra did not do justice to these evergreen classics.
Have fun!
