It was one of those days when it's a minute away from snowing and there's this electricity in the air, you can almost hear it. And this bag was, like, dancing with me. Like a little kid begging me to play with it. For fifteen minutes. And that's the day I knew there was this entire life behind things, and... this incredibly benevolent force, that wanted me to know there was no reason to be afraid, ever. Video's a poor excuse, I know. But it helps me remember... and I need to remember... Sometimes there's so much beauty in the world I feel like I can't take it, like my heart's going to cave in.

Oh! Thanks. Yeah, it ends with him thrashing a guy too. It's because the Chinese escape through the backwaters, right? Baldwin's character along with Queenan and Costigan are the "clean" cops in the film, also that black guy who gets killed along with Caprio and the other rat-cop. I still have doubts over Dignam. Yes. Such a brilliant piece of dialogue. In this scene, Kubrick reflects on how the (oppressive) audience reacts to stories of people who are "unlike everyone else." But even as I realise that the filmmaker overtly highlights this contradiction on the audience's part, I've to say it still remains one of the most most tragic finales I've ever witnessed.

I'm not sure if the meeting place bears any specific significance. Besides Kubrick's love for the game of Chess. That's as far as I can see.

I was struck by the denouement. The "Poodle" gimmick came out of nowhere. This one is lot more affecting than say, Treasure of the Sierra Madre. I'd buy the contrivance every single time I watch it. First real glimpse of greatness, and a nice start to his career after the vapid "Killer's kiss", which had lot less in it, apart from its genre stylistics.

Kola Kwariani, The actor (who played the Wrestler) played Chess in the same Chess and checkers club (The flea house) that comes in the film. Kubrick and Kwariani know each other through the club and their love for the game. He is an ex-wrestler himself. What's significant and tragic about this is, Kwariani lost his life in front of "The flea house" after fighting with 5 "black" kids (http://www.anusha.com/kwariani.htm)

 I had seen this before. This is one of the advantages Russell has over other stand-up comedians. (My favorite) George Carlin's is biting in context of Americans and Whites, that the gag is not always humorous. Russell achieves the balance, and because of his Indian descent, could involve Indians, Chinese, etc in this context. His mimicking is particularly great.

Anyway, just in case, I had only put Black in quotes, to punctuate such pigeonholing. (and I hope you don't take it as my fall-in into such overemphasizing of person's color).

clue ?

A great opening scene!

The acting in this particular scene by the actor, even minor gestures were awesome.

:exactly:

The scriptwriter(cum director) didn't plan this opening at first, it began with the exterior. But only a suggestion from a random friend that he could do with an unusual opening which would be remembered like the opening sequence in Patton, his own scripted film. The selection of the sequence highlighted the intension to begin with the darkness (and void) of the interior, followed by the transition, to brightness (and wedding celebration) of the exterior. He also talks about the significance of the opening as an immigrant (undertaker) begins with belief in the country, but as he goes to the details, we find the lack of protection, and unjust suffering. The actor, who played the undertaker, had no agents, but got selected by audition. And we all know the cat-on-the-lap being a last minute improvisation and all...

neenga solra maadhiriyum sollalAm...:-)

The initial few mins in Dark Knight is unsettling. Chaotic. We don't get "introduced" to the characters, those we know a little more fall down, which is so unlike the "setting the scene" prescriptions for opening scenes in screenplays. You are asked to make sense of stuff as things progress and they down slow down to explain for the benefot of the viewer. Icing on the cake being the grand entry !
Plus, I am a big sucker for action.

Jeez, one of those psychedelic films. Croenberg's I think.

But why Jeez? I like Cronenberg. :) And this IS the best double role performance done in Cinema IMHO! The same actor could do the Bard's Antonio or Nabokov's Humbert to perfection. It is also widely known that he struggled with Deniro when they shot together for "The Mission". Apparently he got tired of the number of takes it took for Deniro. Certainly a thing this guy wouldn't need at all! As for the double role in Dead ringers, its perfection is understood when these dialogue(s) (like the one I posted) are said. Irons comes up subtle reaction depending on either of the twin characters. It is done with such precision! And what a voice?! Certainly one of my favorite actors (Gary Oldman is another) underrated in business today. As for Cronenberg, he extracts many great performances. This is the best, and when Irons got deprived of Oscar that year. He would pay homage to Cronenberg when he wins it the following year for "Reversal of fortune".

Clue(s): The actor(P1) is mentioned in previous page. As evident in the dialogue, there are not many films on self-alienation envisioned (visually and less verbosely) to the audience. So much so that it is revered for its final long shot (when the alienation and loss of (all) identity is attained - like Kagemusha and Mithya).
