Chinna Thambi Periya Thambi

Manivannan was back with the same successful combination of Prabhu and Sathyaraj. Nadhiya who was at the peak of her career was the heroine. This again had the village mileu and as the Tamil cinema norm would be, both the brothers were uneducated, innocent and mother loving sons. Nadhiya their rich cousin [muraipen]would be in Chennai and by a sudden turn of events she would become poor and move to the village. Both the brothers would love her but she receiprocates it towards Chinna Thambi leading to misunderstanding and complications. How it all gets resolved formed the remaining part.

Prabhu as the innocent Chinna Thambi was fluent and his portrayal won him accolades. The movie was a big commercial success and it celebrated 100 days. There was a debate on who stole the show and I remeber reading an aptly summarised answer to this in a film magazine and it was like this.

Apt comments Murali sir. Though director Manivannan was perceived to be closer to Sathyaraj, in my opinion Prabhu got a bigger slice in this movie - unlike palaivana rojakkal. Prabhu -Sathyaraj combination (like Rajini-prabhu combination in Guru sishyan) blended well in comedy scences.

Chinna Poove Mella Pesu

This was the movie of the year for Prabhu. The love failed liquor addict character was like a perfect T for him and he simply swept everybody off their feet. The ஏ பிள்ளை கருப்பாயி song and picturisation had become such a hit that S.A.Rajkumar who made his musical debut with the film overnight become a much sought after person. This was also the debut movie for Ramki, Sabitha Anand [in Tamil] and the heroine.

Robert Rajasekar after the phenomenal success of Paalaivana Cholai had fallen down from grace and this was again the turning point in their directorial careers. Released for the Tamil New Year in 1987, this was a grand success with more than a 100 days run.

Poo Poovaa Poothirukku

Erich Segal's Man Woman and Child had attracted so many persons both in it's novel and movie forms and our directors were no exceptions. While Balu Mahendra adapted it as Olangal in Malayalam, Vendhanpatti Alagappan made Poo Poova ----.

Here Prabhu was a family man with kids and he having another relationship in another place and the resultant complications formed the story. Saritha was the wife and Amala acted as the other woman. Normally [and quite strangely] ladies have a fascination for such subjects and no wonder this movie also got the favourable response from them and did good business.

Prabhu as the man torn in between had done a neat job. Even his different look with the specs and the combed hair style gave a suave look to him.


Liked this movie very much . Mature performance from Prabhu, as the father of 3 children. Probably the first movie of Prabhu ( excluding movies acted with NT) to draw huge family audience to theatres. Saritha, one of the most talented tamil heriones of all times, was remarkable. Music director T.Rajendar's songs became popular. Director Alagappan, who later surprised me with a rare, watchable Ramarajan movie 'Thangamana Rasa' , had done a neat job . Having seen Balu's malayalam movie olangal too, I somehow feel this is a better one.

Anand

This was one movie that many were eagerly expecting. Sivaji Productions surprisingly started a fresh movie immediately after their previous one [Aruvadai Naal] celebrated 100 days.

They brought the rights of Telugu super hit Majnu which with Nagarjuna in lead was a runaway hit in Andhra. The old warhorse C.V.Rajendran was put in charge of the megaphone. Radha was the heroine. The telugu movie had liberally taken the scenes from Thalavattam [the Malayalam movie which would later be remade by Prabhu] and Tamil also had the same quota.

The songs were great with Lata Mangeshkar crooning for the melodious Aarraaro aarraaro. But somehow this Andhara meals was not suited to the taste of our audience and it ended up as an avaerage.

But Prabhu had put in a very good performance. Another notable feature was Cho after a very long time did a full fledged role in ths movie as Prabhu's father.

Murali sir, Anand no doubt had a interesting story line. Villain Shivachandran, who acted as a smart businessman in the movie using clever, unusual tactics to sabotage Prabhu-Radha love was a novelty. However,in my opinion, CVRs direction was not in sync with times & a younger director like V.Alagappan or Robert-Rajasekhar with lower dose of melodrama would have made the movie a hit.

BTW I have seen malayalam movie Thalavattam which was remade as manasukkul mathapoo. Which particular scene of Anand ( i.e telugu original) was lifted from Thalavattom?

Thanks for your comments. Regarding Anand, if you had seen Thalavattom, Mohanlal would use so many tricks to woo Lizzy. For eg writing I love you on the entire road on which Lizzy would walk is one scene that immediately spring to my mind. There were one or two other scenes too about which I would come back. Due to this these scenes were changed in Manasukkul Mathhaappu.

சாக்சபோன் கலைஞராக பிரபு. தமிழ் படத்தில் சாக்சபோன் கலைஞராக ஹீரோ வருவது இதுவே முதல் முறை. தந்தையின் (மோஹன்ராம் சார்) மறைவிற்குப் பின் அவரது இரண்டாவது மனைவியைத் தேடி அவரை தன்னுடனே இருக்க வைக்கும் மகனாகவும், தம்பி மீது மிகுந்த பாசம் கொண்ட அண்ணனாகவும் கச்சிதமான வேடம் பிரபுவுக்கு.

- இந்த உண்மையை காதலிக்குத் தெரிவித்த அண்ணன் மீது கோபம் கொள்ளும் தம்பி ரமேஷ் அரவிந்தை சமாதானப்படுத்தும் காட்சி (அண்ணன் பற்றவைக்கும் சிகரெட் லைட்டரை கோபத்துடம் இருமுறை ஊதி அணைக்கும் தம்பி, அண்ணன் விடாது அடுத்த முறையும் பற்றவைக்கும் போது கோபம் தணிந்து அண்ணனை கட்டிக் கொள்வது பாலசந்தர் டச்)....
- மலைக்கோவிலில் தான் எழுதிய காதல் கவிதைகளை ஏற்ற இரக்கத்துடன் -சொந்தக் குரலில்- பாடும் காட்சி....

இப்படி பல காட்சிகளில் முத்திரை பதித்திருக்கிறார் இளைய திலகம்.

பிரகாஷ் ராஜின் முதல் படம். ரகுமானின் பாடல்கள் அனைத்தும் ஹிட். ரகுனாத ரெட்டியின் ஒளிப்பதிவில் விசாகபட்டினம் கடல் அலைகளுக்கும் படத்தில் ஒரு முக்கிய கதாபாத்திரம் உண்டு என்றால் மிகையைல்ல. கிளைமாக்ஸ் ( டிரம் உருளுவது) கொஞ்சம் சொதப்பல்தான் என்பது தவிர வேறு குறைகள் தென்படவில்லை.

எல்லாவற்றையும் விட தன்னுடைய உடல் குறையை - குண்டு உடல் அமைப்பை- பலர் படத்தில் வெளிப்படையாக கேலி செய்வது போன்ற ( குண்டு கத்திரிக்காய்.... பாட்டு வேறு) ஒரு கதா பாத்திரத்தில் நடிக்கும் ஈகோ இல்லாத பரந்த மனம் பிரபுவுக்கு இருப்பது பன்ச் டயலாக் மற்றும் image concious இமேஜ் நடிகர்கள் அதிகம் உள்ள தமிழ்த் திரையுலகில் கொஞ்சம் அபூர்வம்தான்.

While Duet will never be in my favourite KB film list, it certainly showcased a powerhouse performance. Many have already spoken about the film and its songs, in particular the Anjali Anjali song sequence, which even got SPB's notice. In one of the singing competition, SPB pointed out the song sequence, where Prabhu would be playing Sax with tears welling, and said it reminded him of Ganesan senior. So powerful.

There are so many scenes to talk about. I also like the self-deprecating jokes about his weight.

Also, thanks for the info on the number of days running. I got upset when I saw 77 days only in Nagercoil and confronted Joe about it just now :P Joe reminded me that Nagercoil is not as big as Chennai and Madhurai, plus it ran 77 days in Karthikai theatre alone. So here's :clap: to Nagercoil folks. :D

Yes. Though Duet can't be included in the list of KB movies like Aval oru thodarkathai, achamillai achamillai...etc. ( may be becuase Duet is not an original script of KB/Ananthu) , it is a neat entertainer with good performance from Prabhu.

Normally a movie which crosses 50 days in Nagercoil can be safely considered as a hit, which will have 100 days run in Chennai / Madurai. While this is a general rule, NT & Prabhu are exeptions, who had a comparatively better run in Nagercoil. May be because its proximity to kerala , preference of Nagercoil audience would be different from that of many other areas of TN, including the neighbouring Tirunelveli. For e.g village subjects with Madurai nativity would be generally liked in Tirunelveli, Madurai and Trichy areas but not to the same extent in Nagercoil . That is why barathiraja who had about 5 - 100 day movies in Tirunelveli did not have a single 100 day movie in Nagercoil. Nagercoil liked Balachander more than Barathiraaja & of course Prabhu more than Ramarajan, whereas it is the other way around in Tirunelveli. Even politically Nagercoil is more inclined towards National parties than regional parties.

En Thangachi Padichava was the first one. It got released in July 1988, while Pillaikkaaga was released in March 1989. In fact seeing the stupendous success of ETP, Pillaikkaaga was done by the same team. The first 30 mins of Pillaikkaaga would be electrifying only to lose out later.

Prabhu sir was spotted at Pavilion, KL last Saturday accompanying his wife and daughter(?) shopping, to be specific, buying handbag (Gucci).
My uncle and his daughters saw him. No Indians around, so it was easy for them. Prabhu sir was just waving from the shop.
Then, my uncle (he's a Chinese) approached Prabhu sir.

Prabhu : Hi, how do u know me?
Uncle : I saw u in Ravanan. (He watches all Thamiz movies and know Prabhu sir and NT very much)

Prabhu sir was smiling and hugging my uncle. <they had a casual chat>It seems he was very friendly and down to earth. :)

8. சென்னையில் 1200க்கு மேல் இருக்கை கோண்ட பெரிய திரையரங்கம் ஒன்றில் 200 நாட்களைக் கடந்த கடைசித் தமிழ்ப் படம் சின்னத் தம்பி. Chennai - Shanthi 347 housefull shows. சென்னையில் ஒரே திரையரங்கில் அதிபட்ச Housefull காட்சிகள் (அனுஈகா -655) காட்சிகள் தொடர் அரங்கு நிறைந்தது. இந்தச் சாதனை இன்னும் முறியடிக்கப்படவில்லை.

Parambarai revisit (1 1/2 CDs of 3 VCDs)

Wife and I watched it, because my better half caught some comedy clips on TV and wanted to watch the whole film. She was quite taken to the film itself, in addition to the Gounder/Senthil riots. As for me, I stuck to appreciating Prabhu and laughing my rear off during the comedy scenes.

But Prabhu! Wow. You'd never see a much more fierce Prabhu than this. Again, he has daddy issue here, with the same dad as in Agni Natchatiram. There are not many actors, after NT, who can express rage, frustration and pathos at the same time and Prabhu did it magnificently when he had to confront Vijaya kumar.

Nothing great about the story. Really poor bad guy, who was he by the way?

Manorama, despite the usual sad widowed grandma shtick, was funny in places. In one scene, after talking with Prabhu about a stray kolusu stuck on his shirt, teasing him, leaves the frame, and Prabhu would look dreamily at the kolusu, head slowly tilting upwards, she'd appear again, saying, "Dey, niraya velai irukku paattu kittunu poyidatha!", and drags him away :lol:

Yep, watched him in Darling. Not sure why he wants to do telugu films. After all, he's doing the same sort of daddy-roles that he's been doing in Tamil....only difference is that he gets an awful dubbing voice in Telugu.

I am sure he does. He brings a certain class to those roles which nobody in Telugu can manage. Chandramohan used to be the go-to guy for these roles but a)he is short of Prabhu's class and b) is also too over-exposed in similar roles.

Saw the second half of Oruvar Vaazhum Aalayam courtesy Jaya TV. Have not watched the movie since 1988, when I saw it during it's release. Yes there are some scenes that are usual cinematic clichés but still Prabhu makes it a compulsory watch. Always at ease while playing the innocent village bumpkin character, his konjals and vazhiyals with Radhu are enjoyable to the core.

Add to it his smooth dance steps with grace and poise in Malaiyoram song [a soothing melody], you get a feel good feeling watching him. Even in the melodramatic scenes you find him doing a very neat job. Radhu when compared to Nizhalgal was looking too good.

This was script writer Shanmuga priyan's first directorial venture and the fact that he came out unscathed was a good omen for him but later due to unknown reasons he faded away from the scenario. A movie that did well at BO too crossing 100 days.

For me the film was one of Prabhu's best in 1988 when he had a dream year.

Here's some news about Prabhu. The actor recently got an opportunity to share screen space with Amitabh Bachchan (http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/topic/Amitabh-Bachchan). The duo shot for an ad for a jewellery brand in Mumbai.

Speaking to us, the actor said, "It was truly a dream come true for me. Bachchan is truly a legend of Indian cinema and was very close to my appa ( Sivaji Ganesan (http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/topic/Sivaji-Ganesan)). He has tremendous respect for our family and politely enquired about all."

Interestingly, Big B is said to be a huge fan of Prabhu's earlier flicks.
