Can we all categorize the gems of raja under various genres of music? We will exclude folk and carnatic from the list as we all clearly know these genres or at least can tell these genres clearly when compared to the rest. I have questions about the nature of genres of many IR scores - examples:

1.interludes from "dheemi" - Shiva2006
2.interludes from "oru naal" - Devadhai
3.interludes from "yarum thodadha" - ajantha
4.entire song "thamarai kodi" - anandha kummi
5.the prelude, interludes of "solai poovai malai thendral" - vellai roja

why do you say "thendral vanthu" is psychedelia?
I feel "kanavil midhakkum" (infact all songs from EVK) are more psychedelic.
also, "manathil enna ninaivugalo" and "uravenum puthiya vaanil" may be called psychedelic.

Yes it has. Its a brilliant song with a totally out of the world experience. Any kind of explanation about this song experience won't do justice to it.

Nice topic. Though I may not be able to contribute much, I feel I can throw in some songs that seem to be "away from others" and someone knowledgeable can try to fit it to some genre.

What about 'motta mAdi' in Anjali? Somehow I feel there is no similar IR song (at least not among the popular ones). What genre does this belong to? (I don't think it's an amalgamation either).

Good topic. I am a die hard fan of Mellisai Mannar M.S. Viswanathan. After him there is a very wide gap and in the list to follow him, Ilaiyaraaja tops it. There is one song which did not get notice of the public but is a masterpiece. I don't know in which category this songs fits in. It is the song "Ila manadhil pala kanavu" from the film SELVI. The orchestration of this song is simply superb. I dont know if this song is available on the net.

A genre of music is mostly identified by the beat, chord or instruments used.
Most of us in the 30s can identify a disco beat. For eg, the beat changes in the thani kattu raja, and the lyrics say it is disco. Some TRajendar song also has lyrics identifying disco.

(American) Country music/Blue grass uses the banjo. Folk music used the acoustic guitar. Flamenco - guitar used specifically for playing flamenco music. Waltz is another kind of classical (listen to the Waltzes of Straus, famous waltz is the Emperor's Waltz) beat pattern see in many songs in TFM from the days of MGR/Sivaji.

Just like disco there are many kinds of dance beats which are popular at times and fade away. For eg. there is a song in kizhakkum mErkkum that is actually a hip-hop beat.

Getting back to instruments - hard rock is definitely identified the electric guitar whose sound is driven to distortion, using feedback. The guitarist plays it in front of the speaker (driven by the guitar amplifier) and the microphone picks up the sound from the speaker (its own sound) as well.

Classic rock (Eaglies, Santana /w samba influences) drums and bass guitars to maintain rhythm. Some amount of strings was also used. This was the most popular (POP) form of music for a long time (before the dance club/rap scene). I consider IR's music to be born out of this genre of music for most practical purposes. Listen to Simon and Garfunkel you will notice the similarities.

Psychedilia, to me seems, like a or one of the special cases. Because it is based on the feel it creates (dreamy/drug induced state). If I remember, the hero in thoongAthE thambi thoongAthE , is a drug addict. I think IR instinctively must have come up with this effect (he surely has had a good listening of classic rock genre).

In this sense, I think, anything that is popular, widely listened to is POP music. It was rock earlier and now mainly dance beat oriented music. Maybe I should correct myself, dance oriented music was there always, IR, has used folk dance beats for a variety of songs (including ones for sad songs).

I am not sure about that Vikram song being Jazz. Jazz is about improvisation, in that sense, it is like our indian music. Same line is repeated with variations. I think the Vikram song is actually a carnatic jathi, masquerading as rap music. Very innovative.

Afro-tribal - African music is usually credited with very complex and varied beat patterns. In South India, tribals living in the hills enjoy beat oriented music. (Pl. note these tribals are also afro/australoid in their appearance. It will be a digression to bring up the theory of africa/india/australia being one at one point of time) . In IR's songs if the lyrics/situation refer to hills, we get beat oriented music from him (malai kOvil vAsalil, viLakku vaippOm, meen kodi theRIL (best in this genre, I think) ).

March is a beat played on a 'snare' drum. Some of us might be familiar with it from our school days (when we had a 'march past' on sports day) or by watching the Republic Day Parade in Delhi. Ravel's Bolero is a famous march music, that I know of. IR has used this in many places (as he is well-versed in many classical forms) including hEy Ram, interludes of the song in thalapathy etc.

More Later.

great post kiru. thanx! I especially liked this line. this song suddenly makes more sense in this light... "thakita thakadhimi tha dheem tha thakita huhuhohahahaa..." - brilliantly done by Kamal! brilliant humming parts, great instrumentation.. one for the ages..

I think though "march" often uses snare drum, its more to do with the marching feel, even without snare drums (sometimes without any drums at all, such as Mozart's "alla turca"). I think "manitha manitha", "aruna kirana deepam" and "adadaa ahangaara" also qualify as marching music. esp. "aruna kirana" manages to achieve that feel in a 7 beat rhythm.

Kiru,
Just my 2 cents:
Classic Rock, as a genre broadly refers to rock music of the "classic" years (60s-80s) and it encompasses country/blues/folk rock (CCR, Allman Brothers Band, Cream etc), jazz/rock (Steely Dan), psychedelic/progressive rock (Pink Floyd, King Crimson etc), hard rock (Led Zeppelin, The Who etc)...
IMO its more a time-based grouping of various sub-genres of rock.

Though we can attempt to "classify" Raaja's songs into genres, usually he just doesn't just conform to a particular genre in a song.. he does more than that. The end result is, the genre is a new genre - the Raaja-genre... We had a discussion going on this topic sometime back in the TF section...

rajkumar..thanks for elaborating on the rock genres..I was trying to give a broad/generalized idea to any lay person..and moreover we'll take your word for it ..since your avatar is the DSOTM cover :-)
You are right..IR never sticks or composes a song in one particular genre..it is always a mix ..an eclectic mix of all elements..the song which app_engine asked for mottai_madi..going by my own generalization..the arrangements and some singing make it look like jazz. But I doubt any jazz person will accept it as jazz..

rs..if you can imagine nepal..just think of sikkim/mizoram/nagaland..:-) I am not sure it is afro-tribal ..it is surely tribal in feel..the constant drum loop..the pipes..the bass flute..the humming..the reverb/fades etc. This is a song that is sure to appeal even to the youth of today..IR manages to tune a melody with all the nuances with almost a looped rhythm (which pauses for the melody now and then)..

Hi Vel,
I don't see anything special in these songs. Maybe I am not that music savvy. It is the same guitar chords/bass line driving the rhythm, along with drums/congos, brass backing etc. Standard POP formula. But the twist is, the singing is like in a folksy/katha kaalatshEbam style. Trust IR to blend anything together.

Talking about psychedelia, "Partha vizhi parthabadi" from Guna can qualify that genre even though it is classical ragam based.
Few more Raja songs apart from "vaanam keezhe" which Kiru has mentioned give me that effect. "Vaanengum thanga vinmeengaL" from "Moondram pirai", charanam of "Idhu oru nila kalam", charanam of an obscure song "naan devadhai" from a dud movie "Soolam" , "oru naaL" from "Devadhai". Along with the tune, music, interludes, the vocals also contribute to the psychedelic feeling to a great extent. IMO SPB ,SJ are the very few gifted singers in TFM [other than KJY , Shreya to some extent ] who can effortlessly bring about that dreamy drawl. If we can ignore the vulgar lyrics, the song "alaigaLil midhakudhu" from "Andha or nimidam" can cause that euphoria

Sometime back there was an article on "Jazz in TFM" somewhere in the internet. The author of that blog made a categorical statement that, It has taken 30 years for Raaja to deliver a good number in Jazz. He was referring to Poo Poothadhu from Mumbai Xpress. No doubt that was a good jazz song.. But there are lot more Jazz tracks by Raaja which the author of that article was not aware off. So in that context it was a pretty irresponsible and categorical comment.

Following are my Best ever Jazz picks by Raaja over a period of time.. All though the Jazz atmosphere is easily created in innumerable Raaja songs, Following songs are more closer to original Jazz genre of songs...

- Raaja Rani Jockey (Netrikkaan) .. The JAzz fills between the lines in the pallavi...
- Is it Fixed (How to Name it).. The Bandhuvarali piece.. the showdown between drums, Bass and Trumphet is a pure jamming session leaving the listener spell bound
- Day By Day Enna Maatram (Honest Raj.) Its a pity many don't even know this song...
- Jinjillara (Thaai Mozhi..?) Amazing jazz Piano in the prelude
- Niram Pirithu Paarthane (Time).. The song thats mentioned by you
- Poo Poothadhu and Kurangu Kaiyil Mala (Mumbai Xpress)
- Sax Theme from Cheeni Kum

on the Latino category, you have outlined Bossa Nova.. Basically its the unique rhythm pattern that distinguishes the latino styles such as Bossa Nova, Samba etc., On the same lines there are 2 more excellent Latino songs by Raaja... "Mamaamuvukku Kuduma" (Punnagai Mannan) and "Sambonnu Solli" (December Pookal)

And once the Genre identification tags along the lines of Rhythm, we always have "Waltz" and Raaja's greatness lies in the fact how he partitions the same song with some parts set to Western Waltz and some parts set to "Indianized" version Waltz with native percussion instruments such as Tabla.. Ex: Poovae Sempoovae, Engengu Nee sendra Podhum etc.,

And Raaja is the king of special sub-genre of waltz called as "Swing Waltz" and again this is a very popular rhythm chosen for typical Jazz compositions. This is nothing but a stretched version of Waltz.. Listen to the All time classics in Swing waltz, Mr. Bojangles... . (There are many versions of this song by various artists.. But the one of Robbie Williams is very popular...) Listen to it here: http://www.youtube. com/watch? v=O6v5Z9bkAQA and then listen to "Geetham Sangeetham", "Dil Dil Dil Manadhil..." or "Devan Kovil Deepam Ondru"...

How many composers from East have understood Swing waltz to this extent.. ? See the seamless blend of Tabla based Swing waltz with the original pattern ...

hi all, :)

Before starting, let me admit that I have no knowledge in Carnatic, Western, or any type of music for that matter. But I can say that I've been listening to all sorts of music for a looooong time and have been an avid & good listener of music. It's more than a hobby for me. I've come to this thread mainly as a part of learning process.

I concur with rajkumar. In most of his songs, raja never sticks on to a particular genre. To me, listening to raja's music is like reading a good book. A good book should give you different ideas and feelings upon repeated readings. I've experienced this effect in raja's music, especially with "How to name it".

Btw, can we fix " Ninaivo oru paravai" to the psychadelia genre ??? Because, quite similar to a psycho's behaviour, the song, starts of in a rather serene mood and suddenly the drum beats spurts in.... interestingly, it calms down again to its previous tone.....

 thats a brilliant observation !! Good start Rangan ! Though you dont have formal training, you do have a open heart to observe a song patiently - expecting more postings from you, as we go along

thanks for the encouraging words vel :)

another interesting aspect I've noticed - though not from a song this time, but a bgm piece in Agni natchatram - damn it !! he conveys the happening thru his music.......real genius.

Remember the scene where Karthik gets arrested for breaking the glass window pane of Prabhu's house???

Scene1 : Breaking the window (BGM X)

Scene 2 : Prabhu enquires Karthik's friends and later arrests him

Scene 3 : Arrests him..and the jeep moves on..(again plays BGM X, which is the reason for the arrest, i.e., breaking the window)

Pardon me for deviating from the topic.

I was free last night (family away) and spent some time on youtube i.e. all those clippings of the "jaya TV" concert. (I'm seeing most of them for the first time - though years old, they are delectable IMO).

One song that I was not much exposed to (i.e. prior to yesterday) caught my attention instantly - "thendRal vandhu theeNdum pOdhu" - wow! (I later looked at the movie video and some other versions on youtube as well). What a song! Definitely one of a unique genre (i.e. the pallavi portion, saraNam is typical IR brand TFM).

What is this genre?

Interestingly, IR's singing on-stage seems to better the original which makes me think this song is a IR fav! (anubhavichchuppAdukiRar. Also, considering that this song is a non-star number and not too famous with masses, picking for the event must have been IR's personal preference! Manjari is nowhere near SJ is another thing, though).

Check these links for comparison (posting from work where youtube is blocked and I can't verify the links):

I remember, a few years back, when Yuvan was asked in an interview, "do you think you have achieved anything ??" , he replied, " If I am able to compose a song like "thendral vandhu..", then I think I have achieved something".

This is enough to prove the mettle of the song.

en karuthu: I don't think you can slot it under a particular/different genre... I think it's a Tamil folk(?) tune with western classical orchestration... Vintage IR-genre...

The whole album is a masterpiece, one of Raaja's very best..

Have you listened to "Oru gundumani" and "Aridharatha poosikkolla" from the same film?

Yup, Thendral vanthu is not of any particular genre. The ambience and the backgrounds of the song are made to feel like that of a blind person appreciating the world through his/her imaginations. Everytime i listen to this song it makes me relaxed. :D

I would like to add the 2nd interlude.. especially the sax part in the song "Kannan vandhu paadugindraan"..! The lazy elegance of the sax gives a dreamy state...oru maadhiri sombal murichu ezhundhikkira maadhiri..! :D

Raghavendran.

Beautiful song....I have heared instrumentation version of this song also .... But i dont have online link.....
if i am not wrong movie name is 'antha oru nimidam'

Thanks Suresh.

I was revisiting the songs of "Soorasamharam".

I was thinking that ARR was the first to experiment with Mano's voice in Mukkaala.
But forgot this "Vedhaalam.." song in this film. IR has done it years before.

And if you note, the recording quality of this album is very good. Particularly the clarity in "Aadum neram.." is amazing !!

In the kannada movie shiva sainya, he makes Mano alter his voice and then makes Chitra sing a vampish song and to top that puts in his voice along with mano's for 'Jailalli hutti' with some spooky interludes.

Jailali Hutti is a riot by Raja - not sure if the Kannada pronounciations are accurate but the lyrics are very funny, and Raja brings out the spirit if playfulness and mild satire very very effectively in his rendition. The confidence he displays with the Kannada langauge is also amazing.

Ek do teen sakhi priya from Rudranetra. Cant explain it in words but this song forming a oriental structure (courtesy of orkut techies from IR's community) probably explains CR's statement of why he is the most original composer. Despite the totally indifferent structure i could still feel IR's stamp in the rhythms. One more gem to add to the musical god's super large inventory.

I am saying rock(soft, hard etc) as thalaivar has tons of basslines which play along those sort of style.

Probably a digression - Vel..re: #11 is it Afro-tribal ? or just our own tribal music ? Apparently, the term 'pazhangudi' is in line with anthropologists theory these tribal were the first entrants into the indian sub-continent from Africa. Coincidentally, their music is also rhythm focussed just like the African. IR has travelled well thru the hills I think he is very much aware of their music. That is why many commentators refer to 'folk tunes and tribal rhythms' in one breath when it comes to IR, I think.
It has been my theory whenever the situation or lyrics refer to hills (malai) IR gives a tribal beat/rhythm based song.

c. malai kOvil vAsalil,
d. viLakku vaippOm,
e. meen kodi theRIL (best in this genre)

3) Calypso/Reggae
a. Aadum Neram from Soorasamharam is close to Calypso/Reggae genre though that song is a brilliant fusion of Tribe, Indian Classical. The pallavi portion has strong Calypso nuances.

4) Disco
a. Ilamai Idho Idho from sakalakalaavallavan
b. Endrendrum Aanandhame from Kadal Meengal - The second interlude is heavenly...the time signature in this song is so complex that only an expert could describe it aptly! (ah! the heavenly 80's! )...Malaysia Vasudevan's best song in my opinion...
c. Netru Indha Neram strongly suggests Disco genre...Also some Funk elements in form of synth usage and Phaser effects all over the song but the rhythm is close to disco(God! take me to the 80's!!)
5) doo-wop
a. "Pudhu Mappilaiku", Apoorva Sagodharargal (1989).

d. Paadi Vaa Thendrale from Mudivilla Aarambam

8) Funk Rock:
a. Padipilla Zero from Ilamai Kaalangal is drenched with Funk elements like Phasers and Wah effects..The synth effects strongly suggest Funk and I suppose it is the DX-7 that is used in this stunner...How did he bring about such a tune for a situation where the female student advises the male students to concentrate on their studies?!! Usually for such a situation, an ordinary music director would have done a simple Indi-Galatta song, but Raaja has brought about such a mystic and serious feel in the tune with Funk Rock elements!!
b. Ennamma Kannu from Mr. Bharath is Funk Rock by all means...Just check out the Bass guitars and Rhythm guitars in that song..Man! Phasers used generously.. .

9) Jazz
a. the fusion-jazz/pop sound of "Vikram", from Vikram (1986). [the Vikram song is actually a carnatic jathi, masquerading as rap music]

b. "aruna kirana deepam"
c. Bharatha Samudhayam from Bharathi (2000)
d. "Raja Kaiya Vecha", Apoorva Sagodharargal (1989).
e. "manitha manitha" from Kan Sivanthal Mann Sivakkum is a stunner that is close to March kinda music...What a song! A revolutionary song scored aptly under March music...

11) Latino / bossa nova / Samba
a. Latino / bossa nova - "Kadhal Oviyam" from Alaigal Oivathillai (1981).
b. "Mamaamuvukku Kuduma" (Punnagai Mannan)
c. "Sambonnu Solli" (December Pookal)

12) New Jack Swing/Hip-Hop/ R&B:
a. Nenachi Nenachi from Sethu is definitely Hip-Hop/ New Jack Swing(New Jack swing because of the synth rhythm samples)
b. Asai Adhigam Vechu from Marupadiyum has minor New Jack Swing elements in terms of rhythm...

13) Polka

a. Keladi En Pavaiye from Gopura Vasalile (1990)

d. manathil enna ninaivugalo"
e. "uravenum puthiya vaanil"

16) Psychedelic rock/Funk Rock
a. Ithu Rosapoovu from Oru Kaithiyin Diary is a stunning song that has Psychedelia in rendition. Funk elements in prelude..the prelude start is still a confusion as to how those guitars are played..It sounds like Phasers in beginning and shifts to Distortion in the end of the lead...
b. Kanni Ilam from Aayiram Nilave Vaa. - the psychedelic mood in Janaki's rendition and heavy Flanging of the Guitars suggest this kinda genre...The Bassline all over the song is simply STUNNING!

17) Rock
a. e.g., "Antha Naal Nyaabagam" from Adhu Oru Kana Kaalam (2005);
b. "Videya Videya" from Sethu (1999);
c. "Vaan Engum" from Moondram Pirai (1983) - sounds close to Rock(Psychedelic) for the INTENSE Bass works...
d. Megam Kottattum is 100% Rock/Heavy Metal for the Bass...What a Bassline in the song...And of course, there is a nice tribe post-lude in this one...
e. Vaazha Vaikkum Kaadhalukku from Aboorva Sagotharargal is close to Rock for the incredible Bass guitars(Bass leads and Bassline)... But the rhythm could suggest another genre...
f. Ennamma Kannu from Mr. Bharath is Funk Rock by all means...Just check out the Bass guitars and Rhythm guitars in that song..Man! Phasers used generously.. .

18) Rock and roll, dance music (e.g., disco)

In Nick Jr., they were showing Dora season ad.
The music they played was exactly 'maamavukku kudumaa kudumaa latino bit' that goes...
<music> tonta tonta ton tonta tonta ton <music>
that comes in the base. Raasappu has put the funny trumpets on top of it to sound extremely different...

Ee swapnalokame
from Manjiradhwani.

The second interlude has some electric guitar usage that makes me eat my own words on Ilaiyaraja's electric guitar riffs. totally freaked out electric guitar - just that it is not recorded with the amplitude that typical rock bands do it.

I think en iniya is Blues. lazy singing on the guitar and the interludes with synth and piano point to a little techno jazz.

Kannil enna kaargaalam is pure Ilaiyaraaja genre. Classifying it under any other genre would be a great injustice to Raaja himself.

eddie dhinesh (yahoo groups and a great bass expert) confirms this....

Abolutely Vel. Masthana Masthana's rhythm starts with Calypso. Then in the 1st BGM, it takes a detour and makes a come back in the remaining Pallavis & the 2nd BGM. Am not sure about 'Karthik's' voice in this song.

there is this user at wiki called AppleJuggler - he has tried adding some featured article for review by Wikipedia folks on Raja's genres....i think in the end he just quit...here is their archived discussions

WIKI PEOPLE - The sound samples are nice, but each need fair use justifications, which means each one needs to explain what it adds to the article by linking the sample with something encyclopedically notable. The best way to do that is to move them into boxes in each subsection, I think, with the captions expanded to link the sample with what's being explained in the text. Tuf-Kat 01:05, 6 March 2007 (UTC)

AppleJuggler- Glad you found the music samples pleasant. The samples were selected with great care and effort to illustrate different styles, sounds and compositional/arrangement methods. The rationale for their inclusion in this article is to justify and demonstrate these various musical styles/approaches listed in the 'Impact' and 'Styles' sections of the article. As such, these sound clips exemplify tribal folk (Nila Athu), Tamil traditional folk and an example of Ilaiyaraaja's singing (Ponna Pola Aatha), disco (Ilamai Itho), funk (Oru Nayagan), pathos/sad/wistful songs (Nadanthal Irandadi, Mandram Vantha), modern pop (Ninaichu Ninaichu), modern Indo-Western syntheses (Nee Partha, Antha Naal Nyabagam), doo-wop (Raja Kaiyya Vecha), classical-rock fusion (the violin concerto), acoustic guitar-driven folk (Ponmaney Theduthey), synth-pop (Ninnukori Varanam, Konji Konji), psychadelic (Vaanam Keezhe Vanthal Enna), a Rimsky-Korsakovian ballad (Chittuku Chella Chittukku, which has the Rimsky-Korsakov 'The Tale of the Kalendar Prince' piece (from 'Scheherazade', 1888) as its inspiration and leitmotif), an example of polyphonic use of vocals (Poo Maalayeh), and a theme from a film (for the film 'Netrikan').

On the first hearing the song "Pon Vaanile" sounds haphazard. however that is only because the use of more than one genre in the interludes is difficult to follow if one is not consciously aware. I doubt if this song belongs to this film which released in 1985 - the song sounds so much the 1970s raaja. The first interlude is pure Jazz - no two ways about it. The second interlude is all glorious uninhibited WCM.

only spoiler is picturisation always.. If ever we begin a Raaja-SPB thread for telugu songs - this one needs to be there...
Whenever the hamsadwani raaga comes to Raaja, he welcomes it with a fleet of cellos and violins and flute invariably.

Today morning I heard a musical(classical) piece on the radio. Didnt quite catch the name of the artist or the band. But the RJ was speaking about how the classical violinist learnt to play violin the blues' style and made this particular piece where the violin almost tried to mimic a blues singer. It sounded so much like some of the things that our raaja has done with the violin (giving it a almost human vocal expression ). A little bit of googling yielded this..
http://www.fiddlingaround.co.uk/blues/index.html
However I have zilch music gnaanam - can someone elaborate and see if raaja has done anything similar...?

Thank you so much!

For me personally, Raja (or rather the 'thing' that his music evokes in me) comes close to anything that can be called as 'divine'. Though i belong to the 'blissful rasikar' group, which could not differentiate between Pop/Jazz/whatever, thanks for your great post!
