I think app_engine is referring to the "kal thOnri man thOnraa..." line :-)
Did some googling. Looks like some Slavic languages (Ukrainian, Serbian etc.) also have words for these numbers.

this statement is ambiguous as it looks like the claim that thamizh is prior to all has no point, as thamizh has a sanskrit word.... Your first post starts with "kal thOnri...". Then there is a list of numbers with their Tamil names. This order seems to indicate that the 'number name listing' was offered as a defence for Tamil's ancience (is that even a word ? - I am tying to say pazhamai :-) ).
So the presence of the word 'Mahayugam' in the supposed evidence of Tamil's ancience, was ironic. Which is what app_engine was pointing out.

Why we call 90 as Thon + nooru ; 900 as Thol + aayiram but 9000 as Ombad(h) ayiram :?
Thonnooru looks good for 900?

SoftSword,
As PrabhuRam has rightly pointed out, I was only commenting on the 'கல் தோன்றி மண் தோன்றாக்காலத்தே', in a very lighter sense:-)
It's definitely not my intention to ridicule the sincerity with which someone has compiled such an amazing listing of words for such "அசுர எண்கள்" (Disclaimer - யா.
Someone who's an authority on both of these ancient languages can comment on the term 'மஹா யுகம்', which to my சிற்றறிவு sounded "like" sanskrit. That's all.
Like Joe suggested, I too feel it's more important that Thamizh is kept alive for now and the future rather than dwelling in பழம்பெருமை பேசுதல்:-) And I'm happy that internet, குறிப்பாக யூனிக்கோட் is helping this in a large way:-)

I have already answered this Question... under another Thread...
..ILAKKIYA-MAEDAI....
...as below.
.
. எழுனூறு = 700; எண்ணூறு = 800;
9=தொண்பது; 29=இருபத்து தொண்பது; ஐம்பத்து தொண்பது... என்ற வகையிலே எண்ணிக்கை குறிப்பிட்டுள்ளதை காணலாம். இது ஏன்.?
9= தொண்பது; 90 = தொண்ணூறு; 900= தொண்ணாயிரம்... என்பதே உகந்த வழக்கு-முறையாகும். எப்படி.?
29= உந்தீஸ்; 30= தீஸ்;
39 = உன்சாலீஸ்; 40 = சாலீஸ்;
49 = உன்ச்சாஸ்; 50 = பச்சாஸ்.. எனப்படுவது போல.
அதாவது தீஸ் எனப்படும் முப்பதுக்கு முந்தையது, குறைபட்ட முப்பது=30... 29= உன்+தீஸ்;
