you will be pleasantly surprised to see his range of songs and ragas. for me, BHAKTHI ASPECT is more important than others. I consider Carnatic Music as a prayer only and other embelishments are bit irrelevant to me.

All of Papanasam sivan carnatic krithis are soaked in bhakthi like Trinity. same is the case with Oothukadu Venkata subbaiyer. Amazing range of songs in praise of Lord Krishna. meimaranthu ponennu solrathu is an understatement.

I have not heard this song sung by gnb/semmangudi. gnb recordings available not much. semmangudi niryaya irukku. May be there are small old recordings. But, Chembai has sung this as also K J Yesudas. There is an album called Gurusmarana part I and II which features chemabi/KJY and other disciples of Chembai. In the Second part, this song comes along with Siva Siva and Enda Venduko O Ragava and pavana guru.

Books available for Thyagaraja krithis with meaning covering the wellknown songs. Ganamrutha prasuram, balaji publications, giri are some of the well known publishers of music related topics.

Reg website, carnatica, karnatic, sangeethapriya, royal carpet to name a few. guruguha for Dikshitar krithis. others i had already explained earlier.

Regarding basic lessoons, bala padam, Smt Vedavalli, Bombay sisters cds are there apart from online sites.

My interest has been on the bhakthi side and i have not devoted much time to the raga elaboration. A Todi/Kalyani/Kambhoji by GNB is breathtaking for imagination and creativity and is quite amazing. But, i have not concentrated much on this except ofcourse enjoying the singing.

An RTP can be from 30 minutes to 2 hours depending upon the singer's capability and imagination and listeners patience :) It is hard to do that nowadays and may not be attractive in current context. The Ragamalikas we find in old stalwarts may not be seen nowadays. same is the case with thani. we are fortunate to have recordings of stalwarts.

Paripalayam in ritigowla is also his krithi, as i mentioned earlier. Deva Deva kalayambike in maayamaaLava gowLa and Vishveshvaru Darshana in Dhanshree/sindu bharivai are his famous compositions. There may be more.
Deva Deva sung by semmangudi and Vishveshwaru in hindi is sung by Alangudi brothers as also KJY. yes. presently his compositions are not sung much i think. Maharaja Swathi Thirunal has composed in many languages.

:) not much. few of TV Sankaranarayanan, kjy, Trichur ramachandran. presentation- it depends on the musician. Those three try to go by tradition and younger lot take liberties. At the end of the day, they want to keep the audience happy.

okey. but, in margazhi season, seems to be heavy rush everywhere for sabhas with concerts right through the day. intha time thavira, vera timela yaarum concerts irukkara mathiriye theriyala. i used to wonder. sudha ragunathan, sowmya concerts keturken. used to be nice. grandeur, :P

yes. december is nonstop music season. last time, i was told there was a special pick-up-drop at sabha facility. more sabhas and more options. There are some concerts during temple festivals also but not at the level of december.

oh. do you think there is still interest in young in carnatic music and pursuing a career in it. i am not being sceptic, just a thinking.

sure. there is lot of interest. There are lot of young good musicians too. i came to know of some even coming all the way from Australia, US just to perform in season and learn more. lot of them are brilliant. reg carreer, i am not too sure of that. but, it seems that the remuneration is far better when compared to earlier times.

If one reads life of carnatic legends, it was not rosy till GNB changed the scene. but, he can only command that.

To quote an incident in GNB's life, when one of his relations requested GNB for guiding a young kid in to carnatic music, he gently told them, " It is a tough field with many difficulties. it is better he studies well and gets good job and then he may try". This is it.

yes. i will try to give links if i find some. I took it from the publications i had mentioned earlier and that helped me apart from royal carpet/composition groups etc. Though we may not know the language, i feel it is better to understand the lyrics and practice.

Bhava: The compositions of Thyagaraja,Shyama Sastri, Muthuswami Dikshithar and others were published by Ramanuja Ayyangar, a well known musicologist, several years back. You can get copies from the music stores in Madras.

Papanasam Sivan's compositions were published by his daughter in several volumes. They are also available in music stores and some book stores in Madras, unless they are out of print.

Prof. Sambamoorthi who was head of the dept of music in Madras university published several books with carnatic compositions.
