In Kerala and Tamilnadu, land is measured out in Cents.
It is an area measurement.
How can I relate cent to an acre.
I know that

1 Acre = 43,560 square feet

1 Acre = How many cents?

Also housing plots are sold in 'Grounds'.
How many cents is 1 ground? I know that a Ground is 2400 square feet.

Kuzhi is the unit used in Thanjavur area (not sure if this exists in any other parts of TN).

1 Kuzhi = 144 sq. feet
1 Acre = 302.5 Kuzhi.

"kuzhi" also exists in villages around Dindigul. During my childhood, I've heard villagers -including my dad, uncles and aunties- using only this measure in their conversations. (Being too much pro-metric those days, I never bothered to even find out what it meant. May be I can ask my dad for the conversion of this measure. Once I have the answer as to what they mean in that territory, I can update here)

kuzhi is a land measure in Kaveri delta, Tanjore district in particular.

kuzhi = 144sq ft

100 kuzhi = one maa

20 maa = one vEli

When landlords (zamindars) talk about wealth they will mention the number of vElis of fertile land they own.

one vEli = 6.74 acres
one acre = 43560 sq ft

Enough? :)

Thanks for the clarification! :)

Altho I personally believe kuzhi is def. derived from the word meaning ditch/pit... :?
