Isn't it strange somewhat that most Americans
have never heard of James Hardley Chase? His
books were targeted at colored people everywhere
for influence. And those people fell for it!

The middle name is "Hadley" not "Hardley".
I have read quite a lot of his novels
when I was a teenager. I will have to search
the attic in my house in Chennai,(when I reach back India) for some copies. You can still
get old copies in Delhi Connaught Place,
"old books wallahs" or just in front of
"Chennai Central Railway Station".

I love chase and would trade anything to get a Chase book.
I love the description, how his characters evolves, how the protagonist portrayed. One book,
" YOu never know with Women " is one of favorite.

Does anyone what is the name of the JHC book set in Florida (where else?) in which 3 people, 1 American Indian, a white American and his girlfriend go around scaring rich people to leave envelopes with I think $500 each under telephones in booths... Or else their lives were supposedly in danger. In the end only the girlfriend survives, and the last scene is set in a beach bench where she opens one last envelope left by a rich guy. Great, she thinks, I at least have $500. When she opens the envelope, one guy would have the guts to leav a note saying: Go to Hell

Great book!!!! I would liketo buy it if I could, except I dont know the name. SOmeone once told me that it was a fake, if that was a fake, the author was better than Chase.

Having read all the above, it seems that no-one has really answered the question of where to cheaply obtain 2nd hand Chase books.

Does anyone actually know if the Chase thrillers were ever sold in the US because they are virtually unobtainable here. Yes the new ones are there at amazon.com

Bharath:

The name of the book (see my first mail) about blackmail in Florida by 3 people and the "Go to hell" ending is "want to Stay alive?" like Amit mentioned.

And yes, I did not get Amit's point either about "Believe this...." and hynotism.

"The Vulture" is indeed a great book by Chase. I managed to get a copy after several weeks of searching.

Well, for those of you looking for Chase books, as you know most of them are out of print. A few are still in print in India, and amazon.com still is coming out with reprints.

For the most part though, you will have to be satisfied with used paperbacks, probably in average condition. I have bought about 60 of his books just on the internet just by hunting around the used bookstore sites. I now have 81 of his books, the last 11 are still eluding me, but the beat goes on...

Suddenly I was craving for books by JHC.I had read a copy long ago while a teenager. To go on-line and see the ungoing starvation of equal measure for JHC is beyond belief. What do we do guys, form a fan club in seach for the writer to get back in business? Meanwhile, thanks Ravi for your tips about getting some of the books from Amazon. James Hadley Chase was born in London and initially worked as a book wholesaler. He was heavily influenced by American crime and gangster writers and his own books fall within that genre, with many of them based in the U.S. Chase developed a number of series characters, with several books dedicated to each and all are fast moving tales of murder, intrigue, blackmail and espionage. Characters include ex commando Brick-Top Corrigan, Californian private eye Vic Malloy, former C.I.A. agent Mark Girland, and millionaire Don Miclem. Hailed as " the thriller maestro of the generation ", Chase died in 1985

James Hadley Chase was born in London in 1906 as the son of an army officer. He was educated at King's School, Rochester, Kent. He left home at the age of 18 and worked in several jobs before devoting himself entirely to writing.
During World War II he served as a pilot in the RAF, ultimately achieving the rank of Squadron Leader.
He composed his first novel (No orchid for miss Blandish)in 1939 in a space of 6 weeks! The book became an instant success and it still remained one of the bestselling mystries ever published.
It may surprise you to know that although Chase produced around 40 thrillers and gangster stories set in the United States, he only went there on short visits. It means he depended on maps and slang dictionaries to describe scenes in the United States so perfectly the way he did in his novels.
James Hardley Chase wrote over 100 books.
I have read 96 of his books.
James Hardley Chase died in 1985.

My name is Sifelani Ntanga. First of all i'd like to thank all the James Hadley Chase fans all around the globe. I myself, started reading Chase's novels at a tender age of 14. Ever since then, i have developed great love and un-explainable thrill of his amazing and best-ever thriller novel in the history of crime-fiction novel writers. To all avid Chase fans...try somebody else who was/is inspired by Chase's style: His name is Peter Chambers. Although out-write him by far, he is my number 2 from my number 1 novelist: The 1 and only James Hadley Chase. R.I.P sir. I wish i could see a photo image of you. Hey Chase fans out there all across the world, i'm dearly proud and pompous to let you know that i, Sifelani Ntanga (living in The United Kingdom) was the one and only first person in the world to read Chase's last novel: Shock Treatment, which was published on the 10 of April 2004. I reserved it while it was still in the production and editting stage. Bye.

James Hadely Chase's fiction was popular in my high school days in Nigeria. My brother- Prof. Dotun Ogundeji and his friend ( Snr.-Sir Oye) indoctrinated me into reading this great writer's work. I can't forget titles like "Want to Stay Alive?", "The Sucker Punch","There's a hippy on the Highway" and lots of them.

I'll be glad to know where to get copies of his works.

I read my first Chase novel in 1995. It was The Vulture is a Patient Bird(1969). I read the second novel today in 2005 - My Laugh Comes Last(1977).

Both are terrific!

Chase was probably the most misquoted/misunderstood writer of the 20th century. His novels were stuck with the unwanted triple taboo of vulgarity, violence and racism. But today, if you compare them with other contemporary writers of popular fiction, say for instance Shoba De, they were better plotted, better narrated super thrillers!

Chase novels typically depict a philistine world of dysfunctional families, fickle relationships, plots and counter plots and a detached view of mind games and conspiracy theories. His novels were never popular with timid readers who found him thoroughly offensive.
