recently ( a year back)
we went to KABINI jlr resort. kabini is near nagarhole and bandipur
its so serene, quiet, without human noise, that when we actually walk out of kabini, we forget to even TALK . We forget human noise, human race, languages, communication and all technological things. WE GEL WITH NATURE.
So quiet, so peaceful, lovely for ppl who seek serenity. Kabini river with lush green forest around, is feast for our eyes.`
we can also enjoy safari, boat ride, film shows, bonfire etc
Though govt jlr resort is there, CICADA (a private resort) provides good lodging and awesome rich creamy yummy food)
look out for this link

That sounds great Shakthi :) it will be also useful if you tell us how close it is to the nearset city and how to reach the place :) (sorry for being so demanding!)
Shakthiprabha.

Link has info anou.
Nearest would be bandipur. Bandipur would be 80 km from mysore or ooty. 220 km from blore.
afaik, Nearest railroad is mysore and airport is blore
so from we have to drive down or take a cab. No other solution.

Hey this is a nice place to talk about your trips (also to perumai adichufy)
I just came back from Goa (official visit).
sure, you would have all visited Goa to see the beautiful beaches, to have a relaxed holiday and for many other reasons.
Let me say, this was my first visit to goa and did not have any such fun......... (en soga kathai vendam inge...)
As a part of my program we visited a place called SPICE PLANTATION. This is just a vast garden like place with many many trees, herbs, plants. Unlike the colourful gardens, this place is purely dedicated to various spices. Will just share the highlights.
- We saw all the spices on the plant, like cardamom, cinnamon, clove, beetalnut, cashew, chilli, curry leaves, Jathikkai, jathipathiri, lemon grass, and many other trees. (Padhi marandhu pochu)
- There was one hybrid tree and when we crushed the leaves we could smell garam masala. the guide explained that it was a masala mix and the leaves had the quality and flavour of all the spices of garam masala
- A guy demonstrated climbing a tall PAKKU MARAM and jumped from one tree to another. This is how they harvest all the nuts and was told that he jumps from tree to tree to save time and labour of getting up and down.
- We were explained how FENI was prepared from the cashew fruits.
- The guide who was a young girl made the tour more interesting by adding a punch to all her explanations. One of the interesting explantion was about the Jathikkai which has a different power, apart from flavouring dishes. It seems this is used in viagara too, and her punch was - Jathikkai - secret of Indian population.
- There were many elephants roaming and a funny sight was to see foreigners bathing the elephants with water and brush, just to take photographs (after paying some hundreds)
- Finally she poured a small bowl full of water on the back of everyone (inside the shirt) saying this is a best way to feel fresh when you are tired. You can also try.
- everyone was welcomed into this plantation with flower showers and garland, and our WHITE colleagues never removed the garland till they were dry.
In short, this is really a wonderful place to visit when in Goa. This is maintained by a particular family (hereditory) and they run this for rare information and ofcourse as business. You also get food cooked in mud pot and cultivated in organic way.
They explain the value and the medicinal quality of every spice / herb and see you off with a pack of all spices, feni and lemon tea. Believe me, this place is full of information and a must see for all those who love gardening, greenary and nature.
Sorry if I have bored you with this place. I can also bore you people with lots of info about Andaman - Port blair if you like.

1. Taj Mahal, Agra - the inimitable poem in white marble.
http://bulgar.no-ip.info/downloads/snimki/wall/Taj%20Mahal,%20Agra,%20India.jpg
How to get there - http://www.tourindia.com/htm/agra.htm
2. Qutab Minar, South Delhi - the highest stone tower in India - tourists are not allowed above the 1st level, as some persons committed suicide by jumping from higher levels years ago - even at the 1st level the parapets were modified to prevent anyone from trying similar attempts. A special mention must be mentioned of the Iron pillar situated in the Qutub Minar complex : some people believe that if one can entwine one's hands around the pillar, whatever one wishes will happen, or I think, if lovers can both do this, their love will become a success. This aspect had also been depicted in 'Cheeni Kum' - Amitabh wants to marry Tabu, so he goes to the iron pillar in Qutab Minar and holds it with his hands touching each other on the back. His wish comes true and Paresh Rawal allows Tabu to marry Amitabh.

3. Belur-Halibed : Exquisite ancient temples showcasing beautiful & intricate sculptures & carvings.
http://www.pbase.com/rlankenau/belur__halebid
How to get there - http://www.surfindia.com/travel/karnataka/belur-halebid-info.html
4. Kovalam Beach Resort (now The Leela Kempinski Kovalam Beach), near Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala - the resort is built on the side of a slope, and one enters it at the top of the hill, and the various floors are arranged in descending order down the slope - so when the lift starts at the top, it's on '0' or 'G', and as the numbers increase, it actully goes down the slope. The then pristine beach near the resort is enclosed by a small bay, and was not that crowded if one wanted to go for a swim years ago - I heard that it's quite commercialised now.

How to get there - http://beaches.south-india-tour-package.com/kerala-beaches/kovalam-beach.html
5. Varkala's 2000 Year Old Shrine of Lord Vishnu on the seashore, Kerala : the diety's pose (Janardhana Swarmy) is as if he's about to drink the water in the palm of his hand (I think part of 'Sandhyavadhanam' - the ritual performed by Brahmins) - it's said that over a period of centuries, the hand has been gradually rising upwards each year, and when the diety finally drinks the water, Maha Pralaya (Total dissolution of the Universe) will occur !

http://photos.igougo.com/pictures-l19428-s2-Varkala_Kerala_India_photos.html
http://www.holidayiq.com/destinations/Varkala-Overview.html
How to get there :
By Road - Varkala is 54 km from Thiruvananthapuram and 37 km from Kollam. Varkala is 90 minutes away on the bus and a pleasant convenient place to stop for a night or more or an afternoon when travelling between Alappuzha or Kollam and Thiruvananthapuram.
By Rail - The railway station is 3 kms from the beach.

I think one place I would want to visit again and again (or settle in if possible) is Andamans. Port Blair is well connected from Madras and Calcutta by Air & sea. Went there years ago when the crowds were less, am not sure if it is still the same! :)
http://www.indiatravelogue.com/trav/trav22.html
Another place that has taken my breath away is Thun in Switzerland. Not Zurich, not Geneva, not even Bern, I think Thun is absolutely beautiful, serene and breathtaking! Interlaken is close second and then Bern! :) Would love a job in Switzerland anytime! Thun is less than an hour's journey from Bern on the way to Interlaken and is well connected by train.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thun
The third place on my list is Salzburg in Austria of "The Sound of Music" fame. Less known fact about Salzburg -Mozart was born here :)

I fully agree with Anoushka.
Was infact, lucky to visit the places mentioned by Anu and no doubt they are absolutely beautiful. (Thun  )
Want to share some nice spots in Port Blair.
The small city is just like any town in Tamilnadu with many speaking tamil, but with less people.
There are many beaches, with clear water and clean sand.
The cellular jail is another spot (now a tourist spot) worth mentioning. The building is built in such a way that you dont know who is jailed in the next cell. We were told that two brothers were in the same prison for 7 years not knowing his brother is also in the same place.
One of my naughty colleague locked the cell when I went in just to see and took photos of me behind bars. (am sure some will feel happy and sad when reading this  )
Statues depict the punishments given there, and another painful thing is that they were given clothes made of Jute. (Just a towel like cloth made of jute, to be tied around the waist.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cellular_Jail
http://greatbong.net/2006/01/26/a-letter-from-andaman-cellular-jail/
We can also see the gallows where freedom fighters were hanged. (Pathale there is something happening inside the stomatch)
The other places of interest are the Coral island, Ross island where you can go snorkling to see the very beautiful and colourful lives under water.
Many of us picked up beautiful corals from the sea shore and everything was confiscated during check-in at the airport.
In short this is a must place for both sight seeing and experience.

Kurukshetra - The Land of Baghvad-Gita
Kurukshetra is on the way from Chandigarh to Delhi ( 160 kms from Delhi and 60 kms from Chandigarh ). It was here that the battle of Mahabharat was fought and Lord Krishna preached his Philosophy of 'KARMA' as enshrined in the Holy Bhagwad-Gita, to Arjuna at Jyotisar. In the very first verse of Bhagwad-Gita, Kurukshetra is described as Dharamkshetra i.e. 'Region of righteousness'.
Kurukshetra is also one of the very few places visited by all the Sikh Gurus. It is here the eighth Sikh guru Harkishan performed a miracle of making a deaf and dumb boy recite verses from the Bhagvad-Gita.
As we keep moving into the battle field we can see dark red clay everywhere, signifying the blood shed happened here 3000 years ago :( . More so in the places in and around Baan-Ganga ( the place where Bhishama was laid in the bed of arrows by arjun to facilitate him to attain mukthi on ekadhasi ).
I reached Kurukshetra at 8 am, some time in the last week of December. We straight away went to 'Brahma Sarover'. It is a huge tank with the temple in the middle. Because of the timing of my visit, the entire place was with fog and it looked like really getting into the abode of Brahma ( as we have seen in the film 'saraswati sabadham' :P ). The sight was marvellous and beyond explanation by words :) . We were told, visiting there during Solar eclipse and Amavasya is of importance. The belief is that, taking a dip in that tank on the day of the Eclipse brings upon one the blessings of having performed the 'Ashwa Medha Yajna' and having a dip on the days of Amavasya brings salvation form all sins.
Then we visited the Jagannaath temple and Sharveshwar mahadev temple opposite to the Brahma sarover.
We didnt visit 'Sannith sarover'.
We visited Bhadarkali temple.
Then we proceeded to JYOTISAR which is the birth place of Baghvad-Gita. There was a huge banyan tree ( the original tree has vanished and the subsequent trees have come from that and so on for the last 3000 years) under which supposedly, Lord Krishna delivered the doctrine of Karma to a wavering Arjun. There is a glorious marble chariot with krishna and arjun depicting this.
A piece of information for sm_maddy:
When Yudishthir renounced the throne and set out for heaven with the other Pandavs and their wife, Droupadi, with them also went a doggie which represented Dharma :P

[tscii:dc46f0f606]Anou, have u been to Belgium. Atlantic wall near Oostende is still preserved as it was during the first and second world war. Since it was a very important point to control france and England it was taken and fortified to lauch counter attacks.
Today it is a very big museum. One might need a whole day and still canīt see everything. But to imagine how the poor soldiers were living under those water logged, rats infested trenches is a mystery. The whole east wing is for the FWW and the west wing is for SWW. [/tscii:dc46f0f606]

Anyone been to CONCENTRATION camps in germany?
Can u share exp or photos or pics.
and tell us more bout it :?
It was one of the most horrible thing ever done to Humanbeings. I have been to couple of CC and I was very disturbed. The CCs were divided into 3 or 4 groups. Labour camps(Arbeits Lager), interim camps (zwischen lager), Extermination Camps ( Vernichtungs Lager). One such EC was Auschwitz in poland some 50 kms from Krakow. I had the oppurtunity to vist once and I vowed never to do it again in my whole life. According to some ca. 3 million people lost their life in a span of 41/2 years. Half of those were Jews. People were brought from all over the Nazi regime to Auschwitz in Trains which are normally supposed to carry 800 to 1000 people were stuffed with over 10 to 12000 people and every doors windows were nailed shut. After travelling nonstop for between 4 and 10 days they were brought to Auschwitz. Even today at the entrance one could see the rail track coming inside the Lager. Old people, women, children who were unable to do work were the ones sent to Auschwitz.
Sorry, will continue later

Within hours of arriving in Auschwitz Oldpeople, women with children and children were sent to the gas chambers. 20,000 people could be gased and then creameated in Auschwitz perday. As the war increasingly became hard for the Nazis they started to throw the victims directy into the furnaces. Old people were asked to dug their own graves and would be shot, then comes the next group who had to fill sand over them and stand. Since early 1942 the existence of such extermination camps were known to the Allies still nothing was done to stop those monsters

[tscii:20b52b9877]As I was in Auschwitz I really felt the screams, voices surrounding me. Eventhough it is more than 10 years I still remember very much. To go inside the Lager and seeing the huge rooms where the victims were standing to have a shower and instead of water fine spray of Zyklon pellets were strewn among them was easy to reconstuct. It certainly has the effect even today. Auschwitz is very big since I couldnīt bear it I opted to go back without finishing the whole tour. Even though there were other ECs still Auschwitz was the most wrecking, horrible among everything.
Sachsenhausen is another CC I visited before Auschwitz was a LC. Eventhough it was hard for me to see the pictures and notices which are still there comparing to Auschwitz it was nothing. The nazi regime made the jewish inmates to counterfeit the US and UK currencies in Sachsenhausen. Large numbers of fake dollars and pounds were produced by them. At the entrance of the camp one could see the Logo "Arbeit macht frei" or "Work makes free".

The Golden Temple - Amritsar
This is the holiest of the Sikh shrines, with a completely golden roof. It is difficult to believe that such an imposing structure was a mere mud wall with thatched roofing 600 years ago. There is huge sarover (called 'amrit sarover' ) around the temple with lots of golden fishes. Also the water in the sarover is believed to have lot of medicinal properties. Similar to our meenakshi temple, the golden temple has four entrances and the northern entrance is the main entrance. The temple is referred as 'Harmandir Saheb' by the sikhs, with complete respect. Once you are inside the premises, anything and everything is suffixed with saheb while refering. The dome is in the shape of a reversed lotus and is believed to contain more than 100 kgs of gold plates. It is eiether a fine quality marble or gold every where. The foundation stone for the temple was laid by a muslim :) .
Covering the head with a cloth is compulsory for entering the temple. Granth saheb ( their holy book ) is kept in the sanctum and he is the deity. Worshipping is by way of placing our head on the floor. The temple is a 'Sarv Dharam' place, meaning devotees from all religions are welcome.
There is a community kitchen called 'Guru ka Langar' serves food to all the pilgrims through out the day :slurp: . There are volunters who help keeping the premises clean and they even clean the footwear of the devotees. This community service is known as 'Kar Seva'.

Ganesh: :) Jo Bole so Nihal.. Sat sri akaal!
Golden temple is probably one of the few places that even in so much crowd I felt calm and wanted to pray. I hardly enter temples where it is crowded.
In Coimbatore we used to go to Marudamalai, the odd day that it was crowded, I used to sit outside and ask my friends to go inside if they wanted!
Ganesh: If I am right langar and covering the head are a part of all Gurudwaras. I've had langar before in a couple of places. The food / materials is contributed by the people who go there. Most people (even non-sikhs) who go to a gurudwara buy something like milk or bread or something to give, which is then used for langar!

Thats right. I used to go to a couple of gurudwaras in Singapore for the langar, for some time.....u have to follow certain rules while in there tho.....like u cant touch the food urself for a 2nd helping while eating, either eat off ur first plate, wash ur hands & the plate, then start again.....else have someone else (who's not eating then) serve u...not knowingg this I'd done the mistake not following this at first...

Jallian Wala Bagh - Amritsar
This is in the same street where the golden temple is and is hardly 300 metres from that premises. A nice garden with a serene atmosphere but with a blood stained history behind it, which even today puts every british in utter shame.
The back ground is like this. There was a British General Dyer who was the Lieutenant Governor of the pujab province in 1919. He banned all meetings and demonstrations led by Indians against the economical set back by World War I. On 13 April 1919, pilgrims poured into Amritsar to celebrate the Baisakhi festival, a holiday in the Sikh calendar ( something similar to our chiththirai thirunaal). In the afternoon thousands of people gathered at Jallian Wala Bagh to celebrate the Baisakhi. This ground was surrounded by high walls on all sides and has only a narrow alley for access. General Dyer personally led the troops to the sight and ordered his men to open fire without even giving any warning. People could not escape as the only gateway was the narrow alley where the soldiers where firing from. People who tried to climb the wall were the shot at, the bullet marks are still available on the walls. People who lied on the ground to avoid getting shot were also shot, as the guns were positioned only 6 inches above the ground as indicated by the bullet marks on the walls which are so close to the ground. Some of people jumped into a well near by to avoid getting shot and many followed the suit, only to be jammed inside and later on after shooting everybody Gen Dyer ordered the soldiers to shoot inside the well also. Though the official casuality number given was only 300 killed and 1000 injured, the actual death could be more than 2000, because from that well itself 650 bodies were retreived after the massacre.
We could feel a lump in our throat as we pass through all these testimonials. 50 odd soldiers shooting down an unarmed crowd of 2000 :banghead: and the english men call themselves as the most diginified people in the world. How blood thirsty these cowards should be :x .
When Dyer's higher ups questioned him, why he did not stop firing and help the wounded as they did not carry any weapons, his pathetic response was ''Certainly not. It was not my job. Hospitals were open and they could have gone there" :) . Senior British officers applauded his suppression of 'another Indian Mutiny.' :)
But Udham singh a young sikh who saw the massacre before his eyes managed to go to London and shot Michael O'Dwyer, ( who was Governor of the Punjab and who approved the shooting order ) in the presence of hundreds of british in a meeting place at the same time and same date in the year 1940. This sent shivers in all the British personnel who did such acts in India and were enjoying their retirement in their homeland. Udam singh was hanged on 31st July the same year but the fear he created remained in the minds of the British. He did not even try to run away from the scene and stood there as a proud Sardar and said "he deserved it and anyone who tries to under estimate indians and play with our lives and independence will face this".

Thanks Lamby - one of my favourite AB songs!
I can tell you for sure that Venice has more amazing things (than 4/2 wheelers - you can see them anywhere in the world!) like
- Buildings which make you wonder how they were built in water!
- The venetian blinds in every single building
- The police flying past in their motor boats :D
- The smell of Italian food
- The masks - very colourful & beautiful!
- The tourists everywhere
just to mention a few ...

Yup....even Turin should have them considering the FIAT factory is located there.
And of course even Vespa scooters originated from Italy, and the relatively warm (as opposed to most other European countries) climate means that many of them still survive. :)

http://www.bluemoonmask.com/?gclid=CPfev5_O2JECFQrAaAodWlBR0g - Venetian Masks :)
As for tourists - what I tried to say was that if you probably come to Dublin, you would see plenty of locals and tourists, what I found amazing in Venice was that the place looked as though it was full of tourists with minimal locals in it! For some strage reason I even had a doubt that the place completely shut down at night when the tourists left to stay in land (It is too expensive to stay in Venice itself - so people try to stay outside Venice and travel by bus / train into Venice during the day?)
:)
