He has opted for his voice as a prelude and interlude many times, instead of using an instrument e.g. Chinna Chinna Aasai - 2nd interlude (yelelo), Kannalanae (Gama Pamapa - alaap), Kappaleri Poyaachu - around 4.05 to 4.16 (lala part) and recently in Raavan (Prelude of Veera) and Marudaani (p.s. I don't know if this can be considered a interlude).
P.s. These are only a handfull I recall, there might be more. My fav one is from Aayutha Ezhuthu and is the 2nd interlude of Sandakkozhi.

[tscii:e9af5cac11]Ada… A Way of Life. The most underrated soundtrack. What a soundtrack? May be because the film has not released :(
My favorites:
Hawa Sun Hawa - Sonu Nigam and Alka Yagnik
Great composition, and rendering by Sonu and Alka. The flute is the main actor in this song. Also the underlying rhthym when observed separately, it seems will not fit to the tune, but when listened together, the rhythm seamlessly fits the tune. Amazing. Very soulful tune.
Milo Wahan Wahan - P Jayachandran and Alka Yagnik
My favorite singer PJ, but he also the most underrated singer. What a song, the improvisations by PJ and Alka is too good. When PJ starts singing, Alka hum still continues, (voice counterpoint?), makes it more interesting. The last line in charanam is the most interesting part. I thought it will be same like the previous line, but stunned how it continued to pallavi. Humming is the killer of this song!
Meherbaan - A R Rahman
Rahman makes it simple, just the tune and singing takes to greater heights and brings life to the song.
A very gloomy and soulful soundtrack. Wish Rahman composes more soundtracks like these!![/tscii:e9af5cac11]

Thanks LM for mentioning about Ishq Ada (female version). How can I forget that song. Superb tune and very soothing song!. I loved especially those improvisations of 'Ishq Ada' line, without mentioning 'Ishq' etc. Sweet voice of Parul Mishra.
I was only listening to Ishq Ada, Gum Sum and Gulfisha when this album came, even till last year and those were my favorites. After a long time, when I revisited recently, somehow those three songs (in my other post) stuck to me and became my favorites, and I just wanted to highlight those songs. Also, I have a habit of listening to less known songs.
There is a flow in every song and very soothing, that's why I liked this soundtrack. One of the greatest soundtrack of ARR!

@ V_S, Sorry to be a pest but how could you forget, Tu mera hai... IMO, it was a complete dark horse and it's saddening that the ost was underrated. I doubt the songs catch up after the movie's release, which is on the 24th this month. Truly depressing moment - when thalaivar's finest work gets commercially washed away (i.e. bose and ada).
Btw, it was delightful to visit Kannodu Kaanberallam today. No words to desribe this song which is set to raag abheri.

Please don't feel sorry. Good catch! I had no intention to leave out any song in this soundtrack. I just replied to LM whatever came to my mind at that time.
Tu Mera hai - Sukwinder's and Chitraji soaring vocals and orchestration and that magical touch of pensiveness excellent brought by ARR in this song. Truly no words! :notworthy:
Even I loved the instrumental version of Meherbaan, Ishq Ada (Rashid Ali) and Hai Dard (oh man, what a song! Udit sang very well). Did I leave out any song? :)

Don't worry bro, I wasn't expecting you to write the complete track list hehe. But then again, ADA is a complete album and every song is just as great, that mentioning few tracks and not others would trigger people to give their own preferences (Each to their own).

Hai Dard is my fav right from those days  no second thoughts. I picked it solely for Uditji's powerful rendition. Quiet an unusual/outdated attempt from ARR and if you dont have the right singer that would be a disaster. Uditiji nailed it effortlessly.

Thalaivar didn't only open the doors for me to Tamil film music but also to all other Southern regional film music :)
There's no questioning that thalaivar has a made a stamp for himself across the world.. But I admire Deepak D. alot as well as Sharreth (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-GAgWL2s6FI) from the Malayalam industry.
I feel Deepak ji has a lot of potential to break barriers, I really hope he does get it his cue and recognition all over India. But I don't want to dwell on him too much as this is an ARR hub...

As much as I like the post-Millenium Rahman :D, I very much miss the Rahman :( of the nineties and Karisal Tharisil is a perfect example of representing that feeling since two songs are woven into one.
The latter being more experimental and beat driven while the former being melodious evoking spiritual vibes from every direction.

Yes it is the same song as Jaare Ud Jaare (Hindi) and Naan Varuvene (Tamil) respectively and I think Changing Seasons is a common name attributed to both just to save the confusion. As far the video purpose is concerned, I reckon (hope) it's something to do with the "all hyped" international album promotion.
Anyone care to elaborate please?

ek bas dil hai mera
tujh pe hi fida to hai
kaise ye maan le ab
hone ko alvida tho hai
ruk jaaa o dil diwani
pooche dil mera
kyun ye saza... dil to nadan hai...

[tscii:f0abb0d843]Rahman has recently released a music video titled “Changing Seasons”, featuring visuals from the movie “Raavan”. Released in Tamil and Hindi, it features the song “Uda Ja Re…”, which played during the roll over credits. The film flopped at the box office and Rahman's score for the film didn't become particularly popular. Why the need then to revive the single?
“In the urgency of life, a lot of good things go past and we don't pay attention to them. I think ‘ Raavan' had the most enchanting visuals by Santosh Sivan (cinematographer) and Aishwarya looked very beautiful. Mani (Ratnam) was kind enough to let me use unused stills from the film. When I was in Cape Town it occurred to me that these two could be gelled and we went ahead with the video,” explains Rahman. [/tscii:f0abb0d843]

2 songs from Ayudha Ezhuthu.
Nenjamellam Kaadhal - The orchestration is superb in this song and I specifically like the bass & percussion instruments used there. It sounds so unique and I don't think I have heard it from ARR in any other song before or after. The masterstroke in this song is picking Adnan Sami for the vocals. His voice is truly magnetic.
Sanda Kozhi - I always listen to this song specifically for the humming by ARR at the end of first stanza. ARR effortlessly reaches higher octaves and this one was sung so perfectly and I felt he really enjoyed singing that part. The picturization for that portion of the humming was superb with Madhavan dancing with carefree abandon.

Listening to Zubeida - Wonderful tracks from Rahman. :notworthy:
Dheeme Dheeme Gaon - Flute delight - Stunning song!. The beauty of this song lies in keeping the melody line tight with precision. I love the tune. Starts slowly. This song gives me a feeling like travelling in a train non-stop dissolving into that rhythm with that occasional flute acting as a siren. The magical flute especially in the interlude is very captivating. Kavitha at her best. Best time to hear this song is at night.
Mehndi Hai Rachne Wali - Beautiful song! The way Rahman starts this song is amazing!. How the starting synth bass rhythm changes to percussion based rhythm when 'oh hariyaali' is sung by Alka, Wow! That shenai piece is very seducing. I thought this song is a joyous moment of bride getting prepared for marriage (but only before watching the video, :( they could have picturized it better). Piano in the second interlude is suprising for this song. The last piece on piano which races with the percussion which is the ultimate. Shenai adds as a great ornament to this song.
Chhodo more baiyyan - Excellent classical song with the sarangi. Classical songs are always special. Is it Darbari? Beautifully sung by Richa Sharma.
Need to catch up with other tracks once I get out of above songs, especially that haunting orchestration in 'So Gaye Hain'

Baaba ichu ichu thaa .. I think this is an underrated gem of AR..
1.Kalakkal Orchestration - electric guitar'a Rajini style'la pEsa vechirukkaar Wow!! Is that the saxaphone (or trumpet) piece in the 2nd interlude? .. - kalakkal !!
2. Then "anbaaga neeyirunthaal baba oru piLLaiyadi vambendru vanthu vittaal.... &*£$$&%$£ " - Sema gethu and very good imagination leaving that part with electric guitar and the sound of breaking glasses - without filling it with words.
3. Then SPB's cute humming when the female sings the line "un niRam pOla yen niRam maaRa varam ondru tharuvaai baba".
4. Rendition of SPB (again only SPB possible one) and the female singer (pEr theriyala) is toooooooo good.
5. The lyrics, orchestration, SPB's rendition - AR confirms that it's tailor made for Rajini.
One of the best Rajini songs. Kaadhal and Getthu - 2 in 1 AR Magic !!

I’ve been wanting to write about this song for time now and only now have found the opportunity and reasoning.
This song is about an individual who feels they’ve forgotten how to fall in love and so set on journey hoping to resurrect their lost love feelings.
So gaye hain - A song that has a very lonely feel to it. Songs like this are very emotional and I think very hard to convey through music, however no one could of depicted those emotions better than Lata ji. It is indeed a very wise choice by Rahman ji for opting for Lata ji.
After Lata ji ARR has only given importance to the oboe, choral humming and strings. I would like to say that the oboe just penetrates right through the heart and mind of the listener. The simple arrangement of this song is what grabs my inner sentiments. Indeed a very haunting piece. In addition to the former instruments ARR has also used dulcimer, taiko, cello and ghatam. IMO The taiko is the best instrument at replicating a heartbeat. I believe the ghatam was inserted experimentally and not intentionally. But as it brought a fresh air of rural India, I guess thalaivar proceeded with it anyway, though he has only used it fractionally as it would of changed the real tone and essence of the song
Part 2 of the song has a slight higher tempo. The strings are not present in the prelude. But that haunting humming is present. When the strings join the chorus, they merge in to the interlude which I would put in my top favourite ARR interludes. Part two also sees employment of the piano. You get a choir singing the chorus and the song gains momentum.
The progression of sounds from the light oboe to the culmination of various beats is the most laudable musical progression pieces of all time.

Narumugaye Narumugaye - Top class composition from ARR. :notworthy: ARR's best I would say.
Unni Krishnan and Bombay Jayashree singing, heavenly.
The picturisation by MR is beautiful. B&W shots for Madhubala and Color shots for Aishwarya. Beautiful locations, and foggy background makes it one of Best of MR as well. Vairamuthu's lyrics makes this song a complete one. Excellently written.

Revisiting Sivaji album. Sahana is an outstanding melody, love the portion where ARR hums theem thana nana, his choice of the song or the portion to do his humming is just perfect and always brilliantly performed.
Style and Adhiradi are two heck of a songs, simply amazed by the arrangements and the tempo maintained throughout the songs.
