[tscii:a3a7cbd2e5]A.R. Rahman may get three years imprisonment
A.R. Rahman – the proud Indian he has always been, had released Vande Mataram on the occasion of the 50th year of independence and in the 60th year he came up with an album "Jana Gana Mana".
Even though the intentions were good, he seems to have forgotten that there is a law that the national anthem should be sung in a specific way and should be finished within the stipulated seconds.
And if done otherwise it is deemed as disrespect to the national anthem and could attract a sentence of a maximum of three years imprisonment. And now many people are ready to sue Rahman for this action.
"Do good, there will be none to support; do good, there will be hundreds to find fault". How true is this statement!

i actually dont understand why politics interferes with media!!! In US there is a director called Michael Moore who rips apart politics and politicians (9/11, sickles, etc) and no one arrests him because ppl have the right to express their views. In india, ARR made all the legends sing and get evreyone to listen to our national anthem and guess what he may be imprisoned for 3 yrs. what kinda politics is this??? I understand there might be laws regarding this, but one needs to go beyond laws and look at the intentions. If a guy takes one year to sing a national anthem and fool around with it, that law should kick in. Things r different here.

Well he's certainly not going to jail, that is just sensationalism. Whatever you can say about the Indian government, they certainly aren't going to put AR Rahman of all people in jail. Just too many bad consequences for them, directly or indirectly.

HC dismisses petition against Rahman, Mittal
Press Trust of India / Chennai August 24, 2007
The Madras High Court today dismissed a public interest litigation (PIL) filed against music director A R Rahman and Bharti Enterprises chairman Sunil Mittal accusing them of disrespecting the national anthem.
A division bench, comprising Chief Justice A P Shah and Justice P Jothimani, dismissed the PIL filed by J Mohan Raj, general secretary of Jabamani Janata Party seeking to declare as illegal the sale or telecast of the "truncated and distorted" audio and video versions of the national anthem composed by Rahman coinciding with the 60th Independence Day.
Mittal-owned Bharti Airtel had sponsored the programme, which was telecast on several television channels.
Holding that there was no merit in the PIL, the judges said: "In our considered view, there was nothing to show that Rahman and Mittal have shown disrespect or violated rules."
The petitioner contended that the duo had "dishonoured and commercialised" the national anthem by releasing it to several TV channels in bits of 10 seconds to seven minutes while the national anthem code specified that it should be sung in 52 seconds.
Terming it "an insult to the national sentiment", the petitioner wanted it to be declared "illegal".

[tscii:626e2b6d07]A.R.Rahman given clean chit
By Behindwoods News Bureau.
August 24, 2007
The controversy surrounding the Jana Gana Mana album by A.R.Rahman came to an end today, with the Chief Justice A.P. Shah and Justice Jyothimani dismissing the petition to ban the album. According to the petitioner, Mohanraj, General Secretary of Jebamani Janata Party, the music director’s intention to release the album was to cash in on the national anthem.
Moreover, he alleged that the national anthem should be sung within stipulated seconds but Rahman has sung it for over seven minutes.
The judges, while dismissing the petition on both counts, said that it is the right of the citizens to sing the national anthem and it cannot be deemed as an act of disrespect. Also they gave the verdict that there is no such rule as to the stipulated time.

August 24, 2007
The case against A.R. Rahman has been dismissed.
A case had been flied against A.R. Rahman in the Chennai High Court that he had insulted the National Anthem by playing it on his album 'Jana Mana Gana' for 7 minutes, while it should be sung only for 20-52 seconds.
But the High Court dismissed the case. So now ARR can now relax and sing.

An Advertisement we should be ashamed of
During the 60th Independence Day celebrations, we as citizens took pride in every way one could show that he or she loves the country. As ordinary citizens we found ways like forwarding text messages and emails eulogizing our country and sporting the small flag in our suits and distributing sweets.
Now let’s take a look to the 60th day celebrations contributed by the Music Master A.R.Rehman. Few days before and few days after 15th of August 2007 all our satellite channels were flooded with a music jingle commemorating with the jubilee celebrations. This was a composition tuned in by Mr.A.R.Rehman for the mobile leader AIRTEL and produced by Mr.BharathBala. There were many variations of the jingle which is the National Anthem sung and hum by few greats in their respective fields.
There are certain lapses in the ways and means the entire composition was handled. Our National Anthem which sings the rich contribution of the various states, provinces and sect of people of pre Independence India, in its original version includes the names of all states and culture.
This jingle in discussion starts with “Jana Gana Mana….” And then few other words were not sung or pronounced properly and in place of that the humming of those words were composed. Of the various versions except the one where Mr.S.P.balasubramaniam and Mr.Balamuralikrishna were seen the words “Dravida” was not “pronounced” or “sung” at all. In place of that words it was just a BGM-Back Ground Music deciphering the word was heard.
When it is The National Anthem you are composing to the modern tunes why the word “Dravida” left out of proper pronounciation. Where from the constitution one had the rights to alter and suit the Anthem to their whims and fancies. Leave alone the politics, the word “Dravida” is the contribution to the sovereign India by our fathers and fore-fathers and all my brethren. One really should be ashamed and angered of this negligence, deliberate or ignorance in what ever form.
Would the Producer Mr.BharathBala, Composer Mr.Rehman and the Sponsor company AIRTEL do such a lapse if it is words like “Maratha”, “Himachala” or “Punjab” to be left out of the original song. Or even if it is the same case with few other words in the other versions which I had not seen or heard still it is a very serious question one should ask like”do we have the rights to alter the theme of The National Anthem in the name of showing patriotism?”
You either give the entire Anthem as a BGM or as a song properly pronounced with all the sect, states and dialect pronounced verbatim. One cannot do this in bits and pieces part sung and part hum and part as BGM.
It is a shame on our part that most of us did not even notice of such a lapse. Let us stand in unity in the protest against this serious lapse. Worse this jingle was telecast at all odd hours included. It was telecast at such odd hours that during those telecast one was in the “Pub” consuming liquor or one was in the “Bed” along with his better half. When telecast at these hours of discrepancies one cannot help but only disobey the protocols that needs to be followed when The National Anthem is sung.
N.B: The author is trying to touch base with the major 3 players involved in this commercial AIRTEL,BharathBala Productions and Mr.Rehman to know their side of the story.
