isn't the exciting song Ella Pugazhum in Azhagiya Thamizh Magan more or less a more rhythmic copy of the same melody lines of the song " I Believe" by Cher with the same electronic sounds?
(I seriously hoped it was an ARR original, but apparently not)
Can anyone please recommend any such exciting songs in recent years, including other languages? I like Joshu Sridhar also, eg: Sariya Ithu Thavara is thrilling.
Thank you

I was listening to Ohio by Crosby & Co., the bass guitar pattern sounded familiar. I think the riff was used as base for "Agar Main kahoon" from Lakshya (Loy is a rock music enthusiast :) ) Can experts clarify? :)

It is not that the ignominy of piracy has plagued MDs only after IR's era, but even yester year legends like MSV cannot be absolved of that malady. I rate the songs from "Karnan" among the top 5 best of MSV's long , illustrious career. Songs like "KangaL enge", "Maharajan ulagai " would live on for centuries to come. When I consider "Maharajan ulagai" as one the benchmark songs in "Karaharapriya " , imagine my shock and utter disappointment at my discovering it was almost a note to note copy from SVV's [ SVV is a classical music giant of an MD] "Anbinale uruvagum inba nilai" from a 1950's movie "Pasa valai" !!!

Who is the MD of pAsavalai? Looks like MSV-TKR, which means this is a recycle and not a case of plagiarism. Are you sure it was SVV, thumburu?

Also from what I remember Maharajan ulagai's opening line is so much different from anbinaale undaagum. I am not even sure that this is a recycle.

Personally I think this is just a case of similar notes being played in a similar style with similar instrumentation. Themes played on the piano/violin and other such classical instruments sound kind of similar anyway, regardless of the notes being played. Blatant lifting isn't ARRs style!
Scale, this is hardly worthy of mentioning in a thread titled "COPYING - IN TAMIL FILM INDUSTRY" for two reasons:
1. Maybe Ennio Morricone's piece was the inspiration for Desh Ki Mitti theme, but that would be all. It's hardly copying!
2. This piece of music is from the film Bose - The Forgotten Hero, a product of the Hindi Film Industry.

[tscii:c0ef117342]dochu,
That’s presumptuousness and I am forced to discard it commendably. If you or anyone could do that level of likeness, accuracy its supreme talent and an endowment to music diligence . Why music knowledge, instruments, huge collections aim with a audio software Edith paif's opera prelude and post the outcome. Much awaited! Dont screw up!
Yathu don’t get too rigorous with the thread titles its just to keep these annotations intact. No composer is 100% original everyone has their own source of inspiration. Infact I am very happy to notice this similarity and much more curious to identify further. It was not a blatant lift but a gem of an imagination . Like you said these Piano notes been transformed to a soulful composition by ARR. He was into Czech Orchestra for BOSE TFH have certainly referred to some samples. No Sin! Ask Enni Morricone/Edith paif/any to compose a Tamil folk/carnatic song or for an IPL title-song in future they will do the same.
I am an ardent fan of ARR and still hold the honorary identity :D presuming Desh ki Mitti as a personal fav.

I thought this thread was discussing "inspirations", "resemblances", "blatant copying (oops!! blatant devaing)" etc.
I can see that I am being subtly challenged to attempt something in which I have no clue and then comment on musicians? If that is the case, then nobody can talk about anything else than what they know. is that possible?
Nowadays it is getting quite easy to identify these things than in MSV days.
To me and other person who thought of resemblances, felt it subjectively. And I guess nobody is denying that. Whether Ennio got it from ARR or ARR got it from Ennio doesn't matter - these guys have to spend a lot of time listening!!! wow!

[tscii:d2f60a408e]Every Composers in the world have their own source of inspiration right from mothers womb to death and TFM/IFM composers are no exceptional. Whats worst is "Outsourcing" for fame and survival? Deva, Anumalik, Pritam….....you fill up....... etc.
Some inspirations gets deeply registered into your mind and however you try to be original, innovative that keeps getting popped up and you cant escape it. It happens to common man's day-to-day life. I presume this is how ARR started introducing the usage of commercial loops in his songs considering he is an arranger/assembler & prime sound librarian. Thottil pazhakkam sudu kaadu varaikkum enbathu pola and it continued for somewhile. He could have easily made a different beat structure for mukkabla, kuluvalile, thenmerku, endrendrum. Tune is his and 100% original and the usage is minimal and not so blatant like others. He himself have cleared from all these allegations that he wont employ anymore loop rhythms/beats.
My grouse is why YSR/HJ have to follow the same trend. "arumaiyana pazhamozhi irukku" .....3 songs in a single album And YSR association with Premji Amaran is much more ludicrous than before. Most of his short-winged pieces like Spidy theme, yammadi interlude - 50 cents, Vazhkaiya yosingada - Senthamil thenmozhiyai, pushing it hard, bunch of remixes and even rap lyrics. Both of them are an illicit to their fathers reputation. And HJ is nothing but a fading-fluke-drive. Watched that fun Interview damn hilarious Bheema is a lazy project that’s why I use Roxette to meet the dead line and composing original music is painstaking. And in comments section its esteemed to honesty.
"Music is not just sound it’s how you use sounds to organize emotions in time". When you analyze the veteran composers ofcourse they do have their shares of direct inspirations/lifts as well but don’t sideline their talent and stress issues to extremity. If you listen the entire song they have improvised with their own imagination and sheer talent. They didn’t voluntarily outsource to introduce something new to the industry or to remix yesteryear classics. Moreover their reputations stands pinnacle with their enormous variety, longevity, genre mix, orchestration brilliance, elite singers from their songs. They all are revolution in their eras and their prowess wont get diminished whereas YSR/HJ are yet to explode in several areas and its almost a decade now.... I mean their versatility, knowledge, as a singer than these plagiaristic tags. VS on the other hand proved better, as a master melodymaker.[/tscii:d2f60a408e]

the song i was mentioning, contains resembling piece to "Chella nam veetukku" song from Poovellam un vaasam in the lines 0:53 - 1:04, not exactly, but similar......... the tune, rhythm pattern was so much similar to some of the tamil tunes, i was thinking so hard as to where i heard this music earlier.... only cud think of this song.. i bet there were other songs that used this tune as well... :)
and yea..tamizhvannan was rite..tu hi tu was similar to manase manase from Nenjinile (Deva), that is understandable, considering Deva's track record of importing rahman's hindi songs into tamil........
But anyway it is a pity that i have already heard rahman's tunes thru other MD's songs and only then coming across the original......... :)

Whatever it is, for an Indian composer to tune in 'serbian' based song is unlikely. It is like serbian singer composing a carnatic based song - she must have some source.
ARR must have had inspiration from somewhere.

I think you got desperate and jumped on me. :-)
By saying that serbian singer lifted from ARR - Isn't that itself an accolade for ARR?. :-)
I was just curious - how ARR could compose a serbian based song out of thin air. Say - If I grew up in a remote island - totally cut off - will I be able to, say, 'specifically' create an arabic song? Wouldn't it be necessary to know something about it before I do? :-)

I write reviews of the movies in the sun tv 75 aandu thamizh cinema kondattam at http://awardakodukkaranga.wordpress.com/
I noticed a couple of things recently. One was the similarity between the songs, "annaatthe aaduraar" and "adradra adradra nakka mukka". My post on this here - http://awardakodukkaranga.wordpress.com/2008/09/03/அண்ணாத்தே-ஆடுறார்-vs-நாக்க/
Also, in the review of "anbe aaruyire" ( http://awardakodukkaranga.wordpress.com/2008/09/05/அன்பே-ஆருயிரே-anbe-aaruyire/ ) I noted that "malligai mullai pooppanthal" in that movie and the more famous song "naalaam naalaam thirunaalaam" sound very similar. I later came to know that both are based on the raga, Thilang...
Possibly, this has been commented upon earlier. I haven't read all pages here...

Is Tamil Nadu really this un-talented when it comes to singing??
Off late I have been watching some reality singing shows...right from start ..zee...sony...Vijay ..
There is one thing which stands out like a sore thumb..the QUALITY
Watching Ideastar in Asisnet is pure bliss..be it the orchestra or the singing or the judges..high standards of quality...on comparison try and watch vijay Tv super singer ... nobody is even worth an ear... is this all the talent we have in Tamil Nadu .. it really stumps me..and on top of it most of the contestants seem come from a carnatic background..yet their singing sucks.. I guess there is no more charismatic singers anymore..the last one was Karthick ..Its really sad to even compare singing talents from the north...there is just no compariosn.. the singers are miles ahead of what we see in the south...
To think this is the land which produced the likes of MSV,IR,ARR its more heart breaking...
Are we this un-talented when it comes to singing???

I saw the movie "Rani Samyuktha" yesterday in sun tv. There was one song, "nenjirukkum varai ninaivirukkum" that reminded me of another song, but I can't quite remember it. I remember only the second line in the song - "ninaivinil therivathu azhagu mugam, aasai mugam". I can't quite remember the opening. I think TMS is the male voice, I think there is a female voice as well, but I can't quite remember it. Anyone know what song I am talking about? If you do, can anyone tell me whether they are based on a raga? (I wonder whether the tune is a plain copy or just based on the same raga)
My review of Rani Samyuktha here - http://awardakodukkaranga.wordpress.com/2008/09/09/ராணி-சம்யுக்தா-rani-samyuktha/
I have included a link to the song there, so that you can hear it and make your own judgement.

Thanks to Saradha, who identified the song as "Nenjinile ninaivu mugam" from the movie Chitrangi.

Kingvj..
If you start counting BGMs in the copying thread, this thread will have to be shut down due to traffice... believe me.. none of the MD's will be spared...lets just stick to songs..
:exactly:
I watched a spanish movie yesterday called "El Mariachi". OMG, most of the BGM in that movie have been used in Tamil. This may be a resemblance also. But sadly couldn't identify when/where/how and who used it.
Also, there is a song in that movie which starts with a guitar. Am damn sure that some culprit has used it in tamil. Presently elluding me.
Will try to find this out soon. Else will post it on my blog. Let visitors find it. :D

Isn't it a known fact why he works late at night and what he has accumulated in his library? Since his jingle & Roja days till now many know where his music is lifted from and where he gets "inspired" from.
It will only take a music village bumkin to not know this as they have never accessed to outside music other than tfm/hfm.
But times are changing even for these MVBs and tech and internet will and is already opening up all the vandavalam thandavalam ellam. 8-)

Just as in all their forums are full of amateurish exchanges(between the same few who are the only ones who seems to be hanging in there...sadly) like "wow, its a fantastic number; today i passed by the tea shop and they were playing that song; my nephew was humming to this song when i left my house, etc. ", I guess their trading "barbs" technique will also be at the same level. 8-)

Well the first one to be fair is just a chant used as a loop but the second one is authentic bass and i have got to say rahman surprised me with with a minor lift there. Well the tune is original and i think thats what people will be looking for but IMHO as a musician u should not be trying to copy orchestration of others. As the song is damn old and not the best of rahman i dunt think it will bother anyone that much. :D

Incorrect info, dEvadhai was a product of IR in 1997 or so. By that time, ARR was flying high already and there's no way ARR working under IR.

For your part, before posting here such "heresay's", it's better to verify the accuracy.
One more thing:
While it may be true that MD's sometimes get credit for works of their team members, it also happens that former team members loot the works of their previous masters. There are instances of both cases.
However, as for as we listeners (and legal systems) are concerned, only the published credits can be taken and not such things as "insider information" etc. And we know how much "uNmai" people -esp those in cine industry - speak:-)

Taxi bit lifted from IR's song : nonsense, no similarities there...besides, the bit u mentioned from IR is only 5-6 seconds, by the time u start listenin to guess which part its similar, the bits end... lol...
taxi lifted from daddy yanky song : beats sure r similar, but to call it a lift is too much... probably same loops....
endrendrum punngai = backstreetboys : what?? that base beat??? u gotta be kidding me by calling it a lift....
secret of success = eminems song : that 2 seconds??? dude! then many songs in the world r PURE LIFTS!!!

Don't you think this is too much. Even if beats are inspired/copied its a copy. Isn't it? If the resemblence then i may agree with you. But if its blatantly ripped????
